Korean War veteran Orville Pfortmiller, 93, rang the North Immanuel Lutheran Church bell three distinct tolls on Memorial Day concluding the annual service in rural Osborne County.

The tolls honor the deceased and represent the veteran's willingness to sacrifice their life for their country.

The 1800-era church no longer stands but the bell was mounted into a structure as a "sentinel" for the cemetery.

The services are presented by the Natoma American Legion Post 109 and the American Legion Auxiliary Unit 109.
