PITTSBURG, Kan. - The Fort Hays State track and field teams saw three more school records go down Saturday (Feb. 11) on day two of the eighth annual Indoor Gorilla Classic. The Tigers tacked on 10 NCAA Division II national qualifying performances on Saturday, giving the teams 17-such marks on the weekend in addition to five school records.
Emily Salmans broke the first record of the day in the 800m run, surpassing her own mark by 1.8 seconds. The senior completed the race in 2:12.80, good for eighth place and a national qualifying mark.
The women's 4x400m relay team of Lyric Holman, Reba Mader, Taylor Savolt and Mattie Rossi followed Salmans' lead a few hours later, finishing second out of 33 teams with a national-qualifying time of 3:46.93. The time is more than 1.5 seconds faster than the previous record set last year and currently ranks 10th nationally amongst all reported marks this season.
The men's 4x400m relay capped off the eventful weekend by running the second-fastest time in Division II so far this season. The squad of Hayden Albright, Philip Landrum, Ethan Lang and Nolan Churchman shattered the previous record by more than 3.5 seconds, finishing second on the day with a national-qualifying time of 3:11.10.
Holman added a pair of national qualifying times in the 60m dash, running the prelims in 7.63 before placing fourth in the finals with a time of 7.57. Rossi did the same in the 60m hurdles, securing times of 8.70 in the prelims and 8.71 in the finals to place sixth.
A pair of Tigers surpassed the national qualifying time in the 800m run on the men's side, with Aaron Mangan placing sixth in 1:51.09 and Trever Medina close behind in seventh with a time of 1:51.21. Mangan now sits in fourth on the FHSU DII era performance chart, with Medina right behind in fifth.
The Tiger men added three national qualifying marks in the field, including two in the pole vault and one in the triple jump. Jacob Clark finished fourth in the pole vault after clearing the 16-9.5 bar, while Ryan Stanley was sixth after safely surpassing the bar at 16-5.75. Xavier Robinson covered a season-best 47-5.25 in the triple jump, good for seventh place.
Chloe Stanley ran the 400m dash in 58.75, ranking her seventh on the FHSU DII era performance list.
Fort Hays State is slated to wrap up the regular season at the Nebraska Tune-Up next Friday (Feb. 17) before returning to Pittsburg for the MIAA Championships at the end of the month (Feb. 24-26).
