A small fire at the top of a pole on the U.S. 183 Bypass caused a brief power outage in downtown Hays early Wednesday morning.
Midwest Energy spokesman Mike Morley said the fire was reported at approximately 7:30 a.m. Minutes later, Midwest remotely opened the circuit, causing an outage for about 900 customers downtown.
The Hays Fire Department responded to the scene, and a Midwest linemen crew arrived with a bucket truck and extinguished the fire just before 8 a.m. Power was rerouted was restored to customers by 8:15 a.m.
Morley expressed the utility's gratitude to the fire department for its quick response.
