Hays Police Department
The Hays Police Department in conjunction with USD 489 are happy to announce that Officer Austin Spencer has been selected to be our School Resource Officer.
Prior to coming to Hays and working for the Hays Police Department, Officer Austin Spencer had worked at the Lawrence Police Department as a patrol officer.
He has also worked for the Douglas County Youth Services as a truancy intern where he worked directly with juveniles who were chronically truant.
Officer Spencer has taught an 8-week course covering social skills to youth at the Douglas County Juvenile Detention Center.
Officer Spencer has also participated in the Hays Police Department’s Adopt-A-Cop program with our local schools.
Officer Spencer has dual bachelor’s degrees from the University of Kansas in psychology and applied behavioral science emphasizing in juvenile justice.
Officer Austin Spencer will be assigned to work at Hays High School and support the Hays Middle School.
Officer Spencer will be attending basic SRO training in October, and he is excited to start his new role as a School Resource Officer.

His first day at Hays High School will be August 28, 2023.
