Join the Kansas Historical Society for an evening of history, music, and community as Fort Hays State Historic Site commemorates the nation’s 250th anniversary with a Fourth of July celebration.

Visitors will experience the sights and sounds of the frontier while celebrating 250 years of American history at one of Kansas’ most significant military posts. The evening’s activities include a reenactment of the arrival of the news of Lieutenant Colonel George Custer’s defeat at the Battle of Little Bighorn, offering visitors a glimpse into how one of the most consequential events of the American Indian Wars would have been received at Fort Hays in 1876. Guests can also enjoy an old-fashioned baseball game, performances by the Hays City Band, Sweet Remedy, Dave Zerfas, and more!

“This year marks the 250th year from the signing of the Declaration of Independence of the 13 Colonies from the Kingdom of Great Britain,” said Site Administrator Adam Conkey.

“It also marks the 159th year of Historic Fort Hays and the first raising of the flag at this post in 1876, a flag of 37 stars. On June 25, 1876, Lt. Col. Custer and his command were destroyed at Little Bighorn 150 years ago. News reached Fort Hays officially two days later. After that telegram was received, companies of the 5th Cavalry prepared to move out and take part in the war on the northern plains. Historic Fort Hays has long been a cornerstone for history in the American West and we’re happy to celebrate its position and the nation’s on this July 4th.”

Fort Hays State Historic Site was established in 1865 to protect railroad workers and travelers on the Smoky Hill Trail. Today, the site preserves the stories of soldiers, settlers, and native peoples while interpreting the history of the American frontier through exhibits, living history, and education programs.

The event is free and open to the public. Fort Hays State Historic Site is located at 1472 U.S. Highway 183 Alternate, Hays, Kansas 67601. For more information, contact the site administrator at 785-625-6812 or by email at kshs.forthays@ks.gov
