He was born September 5, 1936, in Hays to Edwin J. and Emma (Kneiling) Staab. Leroy graduated in 1954 from St. Joseph Military Academy in Hays. Shortly after graduation, he enlisted in the United States Army, serving his country honorably.

A lifelong learner with a deep passion for education, Leroy attended Fort Hays State University before earning his Master of Business Administration from the University of Kansas. His professional career led him to Travenol Laboratories, where he played an integral role in the company’s international expansion. As part of the operations team, he helped establish and grow facilities in Ireland, Puerto Rico, Israel, and Japan.

Family was always at the heart of Leroy’s life. His grandchildren brought him immense pride and joy, and he cherished the time spent with them. Never one to sit idle, Leroy was also a dedicated steward of the land, maintaining the family farm and ranch north of Hays — a place that kept him active and fulfilled for many years.

A man of strong faith, Leroy was a member of Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church in Hays. After a long and successful career, he returned to Hays in 2005 to be closer to his family.
