🥎 Tigers sweep Marauders with pair of run-rule wins

HAYS, Kan. – Fort Hays State moved to 16-6 overall on the season with a doubleheader sweep of the University of Mary on Sunday afternoon (Mar. 16). The Tigers won by scores of 12-4 and 13-2, both in five innings. The Marauders fell to 7-16 overall for the season.

Game 1: Fort Hays State 12, Mary 4
Fort Hays State jumped out to a big lead with a five-run first inning. Lilly Mohr drew a bases loaded walk for the first run, Regan Curry singled home a pair of runs, and then Lexi Mohr and Paige Thexton each had RBI doubles.

Mary picked up its only run on a solo home run in the second. In the third, Jules Bosco singled home a pair of runs to make it 7-1. In the fourth, Abbey Duarte singled home a run, Curry doubled home a run, and Avery Gossett had an RBI groundout to make it 10-1.

Mary cut the score to 10-4 with three runs in the fifth, but the Tigers countered with a Lilly Mohr RBI double and a fielding error allowed the run-rule run to cross the plate off the bat of Curry. Both Lilly Mohr and Duarte had three hits in the game, while Curry and Madison Pierce each had two. The Tigers had a total of 16 hits and everyone in the starting lineup recorded a hit.

Savanah Egger dominated in the circle with 12 strikeouts and just three hits allowed. Her only run allowed was the solo homer. Myah Wolfe relieved for five batters to start the fifth and allowed three runs (two earned) before Egger returned to stop any further damage. Egger moved to 7-4 on the season with the win.

Game 2: Fort Hays State 13, Mary 2
Mary took a 1-0 lead in the second contest with an RBI single in the first inning, but the Tigers finally broke through in the third with an RBI double by Jules Bosco to tie the game. Lilliana Ramirez-Johnson and Madison Pierce followed with RBI singles to put the Tigers on top 3-1.

The Tigers pulled away quickly with a 10-run fourth to take the lead to 13-1. FHSU had eight hits and three walks in the inning. Audrey Gillespie knocked in a run with a sacrifice fly. Kaydawn Haag followed with an RBI double. The Tigers scored a run on a fielding error to make it 6-1 and then Lilly Mohr drove in two more with an RBI single. Regan Curry added an RBI double, Marisela Landa recorded a 2-RBI pinch hit double, and Gillespie added another RBI double. Avery Gossett capped the scoring with a pinch-hit sacrifice fly RBI.

Mary capped the scoring for the game with a sacrifice fly RBI in the fifth, but it was not enough to avoid the run rule. Korryn Johnson threw the first 4.0 innings for the Tigers and struck out five. She scattered five hits and the one run she allowed was not earned. Kylie Caspersen threw the final inning and allowed a run on two hits. Johnson moved to 2-0 on the season with the win.

The Tigers recorded 13 hits in the game, led by three from Lilliana Ramirez-Johnson.Fort Hays State returns to action on Tuesday (Mar. 18) when it plays host to Northwestern Oklahoma State in a non-conference doubleheader at 1 p.m.
