#1 Hays opens Colby tourney with a 41 point win

The Hays High Indians played their first game as the number one ranked team in 5A as they opened the Colby Orange and Black Classic with Ulysses on Thursday afternoon. 

Hays High scored the first seven points of the game and then went on a 16-1 run following a Ulysses three pointer. The Indians led 23-7 after the first quarter. They bettered the first frame by a point when they outscored the Tigers 24-7 in the second quarter for a 47-14 halftime lead.

Hays was never threatened in the second half as they outscore Ulysses 29-21 which included a continuous clock fourth quarter. 

With the win Hays moves to the semifinals of the 36th Annual Orange and Black Classic. The Indians are 14-4 all-time in the first round of the tournament.

Hays improves to 9-0 on the year. Ulysses falls to 3-6.

Dalyn Schwarz scored 19, one shy of a career high. Jace Linenberger added 15 and Wesley Oakley scored a career high 12 on four of four shooting behind the three point arc. Ulysses was led by Lance Walker's 23 points.

The Hays boys will take on Garden City for a second week in a row as the Buffaloes beat Goodland to advance to the championship semifinals.

The Hays High girls fell to #8-3A Goodland 54-41. The Lady Indians are 2-7 on the year while Goodland improves to 8-1. The Hays girls will play Osborne in the consolation semifinals at 3:00 in the Colby High School gymnasium.
