RUSSELL —The TMP-Marian Monarchs baseball team extended its unbeaten streak with a doubleheader sweep of MCL rival Russell on Friday in Russell.
Game 1: TMP 11, Russell 0
TMP starter Ty Schmeidler threw five perfect innings, and Caden Dinkel drove in three runs as the Monarchs earned an 11-0 victory.
TMP scored in all five innings of the run-rule win.
The Monarchs opened the scoring on a Grant Nehls RBI double. Schmeidler doubled to lead off the second inning and later scored on a wild pitch for a 2-0 lead.
Dinkel added an RBI to start the third, and Schmeidler followed with an RBI single to make it 4-0.
Leading 4-0, the Monarchs broke the game open with four runs in the fourth inning. Nash Dreiling drove in a run on a groundout. Three batters later, with the bases loaded, Logan Baalmann singled home a run to make it 6-0.
TMP added a Dinkel sacrifice fly and a run on a wild pitch to extend the lead to 8-0.
The Monarchs scored three more runs in the fifth. Ian Nehls doubled in a run and later scored on a groundout. Dinkel added his third RBI with a single two batters later.
Schmeidler struck out the side in the bottom of the inning to secure the win and complete the five-inning perfect game. He struck out 11 for the second straight game and improved to 3-0.
Game 2: TMP 9, Russell 2
Logan Baalmann drove in a career-high four runs, and Carson Liles struck out seven to lead TMP to a 9-2 win.
The Monarchs scored two runs in the first inning, highlighted by Baalmann’s two-run double.
Liles struck out the side in the second. Grant Nehls led off the third with a solo home run to make it 3-0.
Russell answered with a two-run home run in the fourth to cut the lead to 3-2.
Dinkel pushed the lead to 4-2 with an RBI groundout in the fifth.
TMP broke the game open in the sixth, scoring five runs. Baalmann drove in a run on a groundout, and Jacob Seib followed with an RBI single two batters later to make it 8-2. The ninth run scored on an error.
Schmeidler went 2 for 4 with a triple. Liles doubled and went 2 for 5. Nehls homered and walked a career-high four times.
Liles allowed two runs on two hits with seven strikeouts in 4 2/3 innings.
The Monarchs improved to 18-0 and will host Sacred Heart on Monday.
