Isabell F. 'Issie' Bonebrake

Isabell F. “Issie” Bonebrake, 94, died Friday, February 4, 2022, at her home in Garden City, Kansas. She was born February 14, 1927, in Garden City, Kansas the eighth child of Frank Fredrick & Matilda (Kunz) Schmale.

Issie grew up in Garden City where she attended Garden City schools and graduated from Garden City High School in 1945. On March 30, 1947, she married Carl Bonebrake in Garden City, Kansas. They lived in Elgin, Illinois, from 1948 to 1949. They moved to Colby, Kansas, for a couple of years before moving to Dighton, Kansas, in 1951. After 10 years in Dighton, they moved to Garden City in 1961 where they have lived since. Isabell was a member of St. James Lutheran Church in Garden City where she sang for years in the choir. She was a charter member of the Sweet Adeline’s where she and her sister-in-law sang in the quartet the Highs and Lows. Isabell and Carl were also charter members of Christ the King Lutheran Church in Dighton.

Isabell was an excellent seamstress and custom make drapery for 38 years for sister Pia’s interior design business. The altar clothes were some of her hand work. Isabell was also a huge help to her sister Dorothy when she needed assistance at her restaurant the Luau Inn.

Survivors include a son Dr. Alan Bonebrake and wife Donna of Dallas, Texas; a daughter Karen and husband Dr. Dee Rupp of Garden City, Kansas; 9 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and a sister-in-law Marilyn Schmale of Garden City. Isabell is preceded In death by her husband Carl who died on February 28, 2016. She is also preceded in death by her parents; 6 sisters Helen Schmale, Roberta Schmale, Lydia Schmale, Edna Lanam, Ruth “Pia” Maupin, & Dorothy Schmale; 2 brothers Albert Schmale and Frank Schmale; and a grandson Jordan Daniel.

Funeral Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, February 14, 2022, at St. James Lutheran Church in Garden City, Kansas with Rev. Teri Sutherlin officiating. Burial will follow at Valley View Cemetery in Garden City. Friends may call from 2:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. on Saturday at Garnand Funeral Home in Garden City. Additional calling hours will be held from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Sunday at 1109 N. 9th St. in Garden City. The family suggests memorials given to St. James Lutheran Church in care of the funeral home.
