Larena O'Brien

Larena Jane O’Brien of Dighton, Kansas passed away February 14, 2022, at Scott County Hospital. She was born August 13, 1963, in Garden City, Kansas the daughter of Delmer and Marie (Shaffer) Speer. She attended Dighton Grade School and Dighton High School.

On September 6, 1980, Larena married Eugene O’Brien. To this union three sons were born, Damion, Bailey, and Jesse. She companioned with Danny James for 15 years until his passing on December 28, 2016.

Larena was a hard worker, she ran her own lawn and tree service for many years. She also helped her Dad and Uncle Roger during wheat harvest, operating a combine. She served as a meter maid for Lane Scott Electric, served on the Lane County Election Board, and served as a scout leader. Larena was currently employed at the Kwik Shop of Dighton, you could always plan to have her famous deviled eggs at the holiday family dinners.
Larena in her younger years played women’s slow pitch softball and bowled on Monday Nite Mixed League with Danny. She loved being a grandma to her grandkids.

She is survived by her Mother- Marie Speer of Dighton, Sister- Kathy Speer of Dighton, Three Sons- Damion O’Brien of Lawrence, Kansas, Bailey O’Brien (Sandi) of Mountain Home, Arkansas, and Jesse O’Brien (Brandi) of Colorado Springs, Colorado, Stepdaughters- Bridgett James of Dighton, Abby James, and Dale James both of Hays, Kansas, Grandchildren- Taylor O’Brien, Kellen O’Brien, Kendall O’Brien, and Tanner Stacy, her Companion- Dave McKinney, as well as many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

She is preceded in death by her Grandparents, Father- Delmer Speer, Companion- Danny James, and Stepdaughter- Hope James.

A visitation will be held Saturday February 19, 2022, from 12:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Boomhower Funeral Home of Dighton with family present from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. Memorial contributions on suggested to the Larena O’Brien memorial fund in care of Boomhower Funeral Home.
