⚾ HBC Hammer HS teams open season this weekend

The Hays Hammer High School division opened their summer season at tournaments this weekend. The 17U Hammer were in Denver and went 1-3-1, the 16U and 15U teams played in McPherson. The 16U finished 3-1 and the 15U went 1-3.

All three Hammer teams will play in the USSSA 4th Annual Midwest Slamfest at the Bickle-Schmidt Sports Complex this Saturday and Sunday.

In their first game vs. Pueblo, Tanner Boxberger pitched a complete-game five-hitter with two strikeouts and one walk. He and Lex Lummus both drove in two runs.

Arec Mendoza allowed three runs on eight hits with four strikeouts and two walks in the complete game effort in their finale Sunday.

In their opener vs. 316 Jones, the Hammer scored five runs in the bottom third after 316 plated four runs in the top of the inning. Trace Jacobs drove in two runs. Ian McGuire allowed on earned run over four innings and picked up the win.

Trace Jacobs picked up a four inning complete game shutout win in the 16-0 victory over the Drive, scattering two hits with two strikeouts and two walks. Brock Homeier drove in two runs and Cooper Johnson knocked in two.

In Saturday’s win over 316 Jones, C Graham allowed two runs on five hits over four innings of relief for the win. He also had three hits including a triple and an RBI. Ian McGuire doubled and drove in three runs.

McPherson scored five runs in the bottom of the fourth to take a 7-2 lead in Saturday’s finale. The Hammer plated three in the top of the seventh but couldn’t get any closer. T Jacobs had three hits and drove in a run.

The Hammer scored all eight or their runs in their opener vs. Newton in the final two innings. They walked it off on Chase Drennon’s bases-loaded walk. Jake Hoopingarner, Bennett Smith and Jesse Taggart all had two hits. Ian Nehls pitched 2 2/3 scoreless innings of relief and picked up the win.

In their second game vs. Buhler, the Nationals scored all five of their runs in the first two innings. Jake Hoopingarner  suffered the loss on the mound. Karson Flaska had two of the Hammer’s six hits.

The Hammer had a 5-1 lead going to the bottom of the fourth vs. Marysville, but Post 163 rallied with three runs in the fourth and four in the fifth.

Sam Thielen and Issac Purinton both had two hits in the loss to Council Grove.
