TOPEKA - Hays High boys' soccer saw its season come to an end Tuesday with a 6-2 loss to Topeka West in the first round of the Class 5A playoffs.
Topeka West (14-2-2) advances to Thursday's Regional 3 championship game vs. Salina South (13-5) in a rematch of the title game of the Salina South Invitational earlier this season. Topeka West won that game 3-2.
Juniors Brecken Otto and Ivan Maldonado scored goals Tuesday for Hays High, which finished the season with a 7-9 overall record while playing in the always-tough Western Athletic Conference.
Six of the Indians' losses this season (three by one goal each) were to Class 6A WAC teams, which all won first-round playoff games Tuesday.
The Western Athletic Conference will be assured of at least one regional champion this season.
WAC teams Dodge City and Liberal will square off for a third time this season Thursday, this time for a regional championship.
That game, to be played in Dodge City, will be a rubber match as the two teams split games this season.
Also in 6A, Garden City - this year's WAC champion - will play Maize High in Thursday's 6A Regional 3 title game at Garden City.
Regional champions in all classes advance to next week's state quarterfinal action.
