Hays girls fall to top seed Bishop Carroll

Hays High appeared in a Sub-State Championship game on Friday in Wichita as they played the #1 seed in 5A West, the Bishop Carroll Golden Eagles.

Bishop Carroll used a 22-6 second quarter to create a large gap in the scoring by halftime and head to the 5A State Tournament with a 67-32 win over Hays.

Hays led early at 6-3 and 8-6 before the Golden Eagles went on a 9-2 run to grab the lead for good. The Indians stayed within one possession for most of the first quarter and then trailed 23-18 at the end of the first.

The Golden Eagles sped up the Hays offense in the second quarter resulting in steals and layups for the home team. Bishop Carroll started the second quarter on a 11-0 run. Hays scored their first points of the quarter on two free throws with 2:52 left remaining before halftime.

Bishop Carroll ended the first two quarters with a half court shot that put the Golden Eagles up 45-24.

Highlights

Hays High scored the first two points of the third quarter but didn't score again while the Golden Eagles scored the next 17 points.

A running clock fourth quarter ended the game at 67-32 in favor of Bishop Carroll. It was the most points allowed in a game by Hays this year coupled with the fewest they scored in a game all year.

The Hays High season ends at 14-8. It marks the first time the Indians finish with back-to-back winning season since 2019. Bishop Carroll goes to the 5A State Tournament at 20-2.

Carly Lang played in her 85th career game, tied for second all-time and one off the school record. She finishes fourth in career free throws made and attempted at 202-321. She finished third all-time in assists at 151.

Claire Humphrey played in her 72 career game tied 11th in a career and Aspen Melvin appeared in her 55th game.
