James Russel Cairns

James Russel Cairns, age 75, of Hays, Kansas, died July 27, 2020, at Hays Medical Center Hays, Kansas.

He was born on November 7, 1944, in Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania, to Rev. J. Russell and Grace (Woolridge) Cairns.

In 1965, Reverend Cairns moved his family to Hays, Kansas, to minister The Assembly of God Church. Jim married Gloria (Stremel) on July 19,1969, in Hays, Kansas and later they divorced in 1982. 

Jim and Gloria had two children, Amy and Michael.  After his second year of ministry college, Jim was drafted and served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam Conflict. 

He was an office supply repair man for 20 years with Northwestern Office Suppliers in Hays.  He later went on to drive a tour bus for All American Tours covering much of the United States and later drove the bus for Thomas More Prep-Marian High School in Hays.  He was a youth baseball coach in Kansas and Colorado, an avid reader/historian, photographer, sports fan, movie fan, decent golfer, and all around ornery rascal.  He marched to the beat of his own drum, and he will be dearly missed. 

Survivors include his son, Michael James Cairns, Hays, KS; one grandson, Dylan Jacobs, Omaha, NE; four sisters, Gracie Preston and husband, Tom, Detroit MI; Beverly 

Bourquin and husband, Achille, Utica, KS; Sarah Stephens and husband, Wayne, Sacramento, CA; Thomasena Cairns, Winchester, VA; many nieces and nephews; and his companion and special friend, Gloria Herrman and family, LaCrosse, KS.  

He was preceded in death by his parents, his daughter, Amy Russell; one brother, Joseph Cairns; one sister, Mary Jean Lichlieghter.  

A private family memorial service and inurnment will be held at a later date.
