HAYS - Great Bend raced out to an early 8-0 lead then held off a late Hays High comeback bid and beat the Indians softball team 13-7 Monday at the Bickle-Schmidt Sports Complex, handing Hays their sixth-straight loss. The game was the conclusion of a doubleheader which started on Thursday but was postponed due to weather.
The Panthers scored three in the first and five in the second and built an early 8-0 lead. The Indians (9-7) answered with two in the bottom the second on an Avery Solida home run and Brynlee Rupp groundout, but the Panthers struck for two more in the top of the third then added another run in the fourth to go up 11-2.
Down 13-2, the Indians rallied with five in the bottom of the seventh. With one out, Lauren Klein singled to center which scored Brooklynn Dinkel. Brynlee Brous drove in a run with a bases loaded, Solida added a sac fly and Katie Klein an RBI single. Two more walks loaded the bases with two outs but Rupp grounded out to end the game.
Lauren Klein and Avery Solida both had two of Hays High’s six hits with Solida driving in two.
Riley Dreher allowed eight runs (six earned) on eight hits with one walk and one strikeout over two innings and took the loss. Lanie Becker gave up five runs on seven hits with one strikeout and no walks over the final five innings of relief.
