UPDATE: Armed individual in Hays located; community is safe

4:55 p.m. update

The scene has been secured and the community is safe. The suspect has been located.

2:50 p.m. update

The suspect remains barricaded near 24th and Fort Streets as the shelter-in-place order continues.

2 p.m. update

According to Hays Police Chief Don Scheibler, a man allegedly stole a firearm from a local business earlier today and is inside his residence while law enforcement attempts to make contact. High Plains Mental Health Center’s mobile crisis team is also at the scene as the incident involves a possible mental health crisis.

Scheibler encourages nearby residents to shelter in place. Officers with the Kansas Highway Patrol and Ellis County Sheriff's Office are at the scene.

An emergency alert has been issued by law enforcement authorities that an armed individual is in the area of 24th Street and Fort Street.

Residents are advised to shelter in place.
