The calendar may have showed spring, but Mother Nature had a different idea.

An inch of snow fell in Hays Monday, March 25, following a springtime temperature of 64 degrees on Sunday, according to the K-State Agricultural Research Center.

The overnight low dropped to 19 degrees.

Blowing snow and gusty winds contributed to a winter weather advisory for the area issued by the National Weather Service in Dodge City. Northwesterly wind gusts up to 43 mph were recorded at the Hays Regional Airport. A blizzard warning covered extreme northwest Kansas.

Interstate 70 was closed between WaKeeney and the Colorado border for several hours yesterday due to road conditions and vehicle slide offs.

Most area schools had a two-hour delay Tuesday for the start of classes.

Rain preceded the snow in Hays before the temperature began falling. Hays received a total 0.17 inch of the combined moisture.

Hays is 1.19 inches behind average moisture for the month.
