The Conference Board, a business research group, said Tuesday that its consumer confidence index — which takes into account consumers’ assessment of current conditions and their outlook for the future — rose to 107.2 in March from 105.7 in February. 

However, the expectations index, based on consumers’ six-month outlook for income, business and labor market conditions, declined to 76.6 from 80.8 in February.

Reconnection after March 31 may require past due balances be paid in full, depending on the utility's policy. That is why it is important to call now – while regulated utilities are still required to offer the&nbsp;Cold&nbsp;Weather&nbsp;Rule 12-month payment plan.

The&nbsp;Cold&nbsp;Weather&nbsp;Rule 12-month payment plans require an initial payment of 1/12 of the overdue amount, 1/12 of the bill for current service, the full amount of any disconnection or reconnection fees, plus any applicable deposit owed to the utility. The balance is billed in equal payments over the next 11 months in addition to the regular monthly bill.

KCC: Cold Weather Rule ends Thursday

GRAND ISLAND, NEB.&nbsp; — Troopers with the Nebraska State Patrol have arrested one person after locating more than 100 pounds of marijuana during a traffic stop on Interstate 80.

At approximately 11:10 a.m. Saturday, a trooper observed an eastbound Chevy Tahoe with a license plate violation traveling near Giltner, at mile marker 324. During the traffic stop the trooper detected criminal activity.

A search of the vehicle revealed 102 pounds of marijuana. The driver, Armando Hernandez-Cruz, 36, of Stockton, California, was arrested for possession of marijuana – more than one pound, possession with intent to deliver, and no drug tax stamp. He was lodged in Hamilton County Jail.

MARION COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities are investigating the death of a man in Marion County.

On Sunday, the Marion County sheriff's deputies responded to an address in Lehigh reference a person unresponsive, according to a media release.

Through their investigation, it was determined an altercation occurred in McPherson County around in the 1000 block of 21st Avenue.

The McPherson County Sheriff’s Office was notified of the altercation that occurred in McPherson County. The Marion County Sheriff’s Office informed the sheriff's office a 32-year-old man was found deceased.

TOPEKA — While publicly available
 data may lag, medical experts at a Kansas hospital system say the 
prevalence of the BA.2 variant of COVID-19 is slowly rising and is 
already affecting pandemic response.

The variant has yet to become the 
most prevalent strain in Kansas, but as cases become more common in some
 areas of the country, especially in the northeast, public health 
leaders are having to make quick changes in response. On Friday, the<a target="_blank" href="https://abcnews.go.com/Health/feds-pause-covid-monoclonal-antibody-treatment-states-potential/story?id=83678930">&nbsp;Food and Drug Administration limited the use of sotrovimab</a>, a COVID-19 monoclonal antibody therapy, because it does not work against BA.2.

States where the variant is prevalent no longer have FDA authorization to use the treatment.

In addition,&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://www.nytimes.com/2022/03/25/us/politics/biden-second-booster-shot-older-americans.html">reports suggest President Joe Biden is planning</a>&nbsp;an additional round of booster shots for older adults in the coming weeks.

“We have not been using sotrovimab
 now for a week and a half or two weeks,” said Dana Hawkinson, director 
of infection prevention at the University of Kansas Health System, 
adding that, “we do know the prevalence of BA.2 is increasing (in 
Kansas) but overall, we still are not seeing a large increase in cases.”

Sotrovimab was the last monoclonal
 antibody unaffected by new coronavirus strains after the FDA revoked 
authorizations for several other antibody therapies that did not work 
against the Omicron variant.&nbsp;

According to U.S. Centers for 
Disease Control and Prevention data, about 35% of COVID-19 cases in the 
U.S. were caused by BA.2. In monitoring by the CDC, the region including
 Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts, Rhode Island and 
Connecticut saw more than half of the cases linked to the variant.

Since the onset of the pandemic, 
the Kansas Department of Health and Environment has recorded more than 
750,000 COVID-19 cases and more than 8,000 deaths.&nbsp;

While case numbers appear to be 
leveling off in Kansas, Stephen Stites, chief medical officer at the 
University of Kansas Health System, said doctors are still treating 
patients. Currently, half of those patients are at KU Health System for 
COVID-19-related issues, and the other half are there with COVID-19.

“If you’ve been vaccinated, you’re
 more likely to be asymptomatic, so you may come in positive, but you 
may be coming in for your hip surgery or your back surgery, and we still
 register you as positive because that’s what we’re required to do,” 
Stites said.

He reiterated that the best way to
 avoid being part of the group in the hospital specifically for COVID-19
 related complications was to get not just vaccinated but boosted. He 
noted a study published in the New England Journal of Medicine showing 
the importance of the additional shot.

“It was people who had two doses 
of the Pfizer vaccine could either get a placebo for their booster or a 
real dose of vaccination to test the real-world effectiveness of vaccine
 booster vaccinations,” Stites said. “What they found was a 95% 98% 
reduction in serious hospitalization and death if you’ve had the booster
 vaccination, against if you had not had the booster vaccination.”

SHAWNEE COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities are investigating a suspect on drug charges after a traffic stop.

Just after 4:30 a.m. Friday, a deputy with the Shawnee County Sheriff’s Office conducted a traffic stop on a 1997 Dodge Ram pickup truck near SW 10th Street and SW Cambridge Avenue, according to Deputy Abigail Christian.

The driver, Colton B. Magnuson, 31, of Saint George, had a revoked driver’s license. During the investigation, deputies found heroin.

Magnuson was booked into the Shawnee County Department of Corrections on requested charges of&nbsp; possession of heroin, possession of drug paraphernalia and driving without a valid license.

Kansas deputy finds heroin during traffic stop

CHEROKEE COUNTY –&nbsp;The Kansas Bureau of Investigation (KBI) is investigating an officer-involved shooting that occurred during a barricade and hostage incident in Baxter Springs, according to a media release.

Just after 7p.m.&nbsp; Saturday, officers from the Baxter Springs Police Department responded after a woman called 911 requesting help at 340 Wyandotte Ave. in Baxter Springs due to an ongoing domestic disturbance.

When responding officers arrived, they knocked on the door of the residence, which was a pull behind camping trailer. Eli Crawford, 37, of Baxter Springs, answered the door but after seeing it was police, slammed it back shut. The subjects’ daughter, 2-year-old Clesslynn J. Crawford, then reopened the door and Taylor D. Shutte, 27, of Webb City, Missouri, ran outside. Crawford then stepped out and shot and killed Shutte. He also began shooting at the four responding officers.

The officers retreated to a safe distance without returning fire. Gunfire from Crawford continued. Additional law enforcement support arrived from the Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office, and the Joplin Police Department’s S.W.A.T. Team. The KBI and the Kansas Highway Patrol also responded.

During the incident Crawford is believed to have used several guns to fire over 90 rounds from the trailer at responding law enforcement officers. At approximately 9:25 p.m., a law enforcement officer fired one round into the camping trailer.

Officers approached the residence and located Eli Crawford deceased inside from a gunshot wound. Shutte and Clesslynn Crawford were also discovered deceased from fatal gunshot wounds. No law enforcement officers were injured during the incident.

The KBI will conduct a thorough and independent investigation into this shooting. Once completed the findings will be turned over to the Cherokee County Attorney for review. Autopsies are scheduled.&nbsp;

CHEROKEE COUNTY –&nbsp;The Kansas Bureau of Investigation (KBI) is investigating an officer-involved shooting that occurred during a barricade and hostage incident in Baxter Springs, according to a media release.Just after 7p.m.&nbsp; Saturday, officers from the Baxter Springs Police Department responded after a woman called 911 requesting help at 340 Wyandotte Ave. in Baxter Springs due to an ongoing domestic disturbance.When responding officers arrived, they knocked on the door of the residence, which was a pull behind camping trailer. Eli Crawford, 37, of Baxter Springs, answered the door but after seeing it was police, slammed it back shut. The subjects’ daughter, 2-year-old Clesslynn J. Crawford, then reopened the door and Taylor D. Shutte, 27, of Webb City, Missouri, ran outside. Crawford then stepped out and shot and killed Shutte. He also began shooting at the four responding officers.The officers retreated to a safe distance without returning fire. Gunfire from Crawford continued. Additional law enforcement support arrived from the Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office, and the Joplin Police Department’s S.W.A.T. Team. The KBI and the Kansas Highway Patrol also responded.During the incident Crawford is believed to have used several guns to fire over 90 rounds from the trailer at responding law enforcement officers. At approximately 9:25 p.m., a law enforcement officer fired one round into the camping trailer.Officers approached the residence and located Eli Crawford deceased inside from a gunshot wound. Shutte and Clesslynn Crawford were also discovered deceased from fatal gunshot wounds. No law enforcement officers were injured during the incident.The KBI will conduct a thorough and independent investigation into this shooting. Once completed the findings will be turned over to the Cherokee County Attorney for review. Autopsies are scheduled.&nbsp;

Kan. man who killed woman found dead with couple's toddler

More than $600,000 worth of property was destroyed in a Friday evening fire west of Salina.

Saline County Undersheriff Brent Melander said this morning that a 38-year-old Saline County man was working on a 2012 Volkswagen Jetta in a building on his property in the 2500 block of Cottonwood Lane when the car caught fire.

A deputy, who was first on the scene, attempted to put the fire out with an extinguisher, Melander said. The fire, however, quickly spread and engulfed the large metal building. Firefighters from Rural Fire District No. 7 arrived and extinguished the blaze.

The Jetta, which belonged to a 64-year-old Salina woman, was destroyed. It was valued at $7,000, Melander said.

The 38-year-old man also lost property in the fire including the large metal building in which he was working, valued at $550,000, a 2009 Kawasaki motorcycle, valued at $3,500, an 85cc Kawasaki dirt bike, valued at $1,800 and various tools, valued at $75,000, according to Melander.

The Brown County Sheriff’s Office reported that Tia Howard was located Monday afternoon in Rulo, Nebraska and is being returned home.

Tia is believed to have left in an unknown vehicle near 260th&nbsp;Rd. and Linden in Hiawatha. The Brown County Sheriff’s Office is concerned for her welfare.

Tia is a white female, approximately 5-foot-6 in. tall and weighs approximately 120 pounds She has reddish brown hair and blue eyes. Tia was last seen wearing black yoga pants, a black Under Armour hoodie with pink lettering, and white Crocs shoes.

KBI: 16-year-old Kansas teen found safe in Nebraska 

MARION COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities are investigating&nbsp; the death of a man in Marion County.

  Through their investigation, it was determined an altercation occurred in McPherson County around in the 1000 of 21st Avene.

 The McPherson County Sheriff’s Office was notified of the altercation that occurred in McPherson County.  The Marion County Sheriff’s Office informed the sheriff's office a 32-year-old man was found deceased.

WASHINGTON (AP) — A federal judge on Monday asserted it is “more likely than not” that former President Donald Trump committed crimes in his attempt to stop the certification of the 2020 election, ruling to order&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/capitol-siege-crime-donald-trump-united-states-presidential-elections-d6f316446682ea36e85e2fc4e0581a87">the release of more than 100 emails from Trump adviser John Eastman&nbsp;</a>to the committee investigating the insurrection at the U.S. Capitol.

The ruling by U.S. District Court Judge David Carter marked a major legal win for the House panel as it looks to correspondence from Eastman, the lawyer who was consulting with Trump as he attempted to overturn the presidential election.

“Based on the evidence, the Court finds it more likely than not that President Trump corruptly attempted to obstruct the Joint Session of Congress on January 6, 2021,” Carter, who was nominated by former President Bill Clinton, wrote in the ruling submitted in the federal Central District of California.

Eastman was trying to withhold documents from the committee on the basis of an attorney-client privilege claim between him and the former president. The committee responded earlier this month, arguing that there is a legal exception allowing the disclosure of communications regarding ongoing or future crimes.

An attorney representing Eastman did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

The March 3 filing from the committee was their most formal effort to link the former president to a federal crime. Lawmakers do not have the power to bring criminal charges on their own and can only make a referral to the Justice Department. The department has been investigating last year’s riot, but it has not given any indication that it is considering seeking charges against Trump.

The committee argued in the court documents that Trump and his associates engaged in a “criminal conspiracy” to prevent Congress from certifying Democrat Joe Biden’s victory in the Electoral College. Trump and those working with him then spread false information about the outcome of the presidential election and pressured state officials to overturn the results, potentially violating multiple federal laws, the panel said.

The trove of documents the nine-member panel has publicly released so far, which include some emails already retrieved from Eastman, offers an early look at some of the panel’s likely conclusions, which are expected to be submitted in the coming months. The committee says it has interviewed more than 650 witnesses as it investigates the violent siege by Trump supporters, the worst attack on the Capitol in more than two centuries.

Judge: Trump likely committed crimes related to election

Having traveled the world leading medical mission trips, I have never seen a larger, more efficient and impactful humanitarian rescue than what myself and nine fellow U.S. Senators witnessed at the Ukraine-Poland border. These efforts are driven by the outpouring of love and compassion from the entire nation of Poland.

First and foremost, the basics of human dignity and the base of Maslow’s Pyramid: shelter, warmth, food, water, and a place for the weary to rest their heads were respectfully provided. Additionally, by opening up their homes, delivering healthcare, and arranging transportation to their next destination the Poles were giving hope and guidance to those so desperate for help. In fact, over half of the Poles have welcomed fleeing Ukrainians into their homes.

Just miles away, these refugees experienced the worst of humanity. All of the refugees&nbsp;we met, mostly moms and young children, told stories&nbsp;of war-torn homes and communities. They shared accounts of the deafening sounds of bombing,&nbsp;the never-ending ring of air raid sirens, and cries of their frightened children. Tears ran down their faces as they wondered about their brave husbands who vowed to fight for freedom and to defend what was left of their homeland. Their voices cracked and became faint as they mourned for parents and grandparents too feeble to make the dangerous trek. It was clear, they longed to go back to their home but mostly, they longed for peace.&nbsp;

One in four Ukrainians had their home destroyed by a war criminal – Vladimir Putin. Nearly 10 million Ukrainians are now refugees – roughly six and a half million still nomads in their own country while the rest have completely fled to neighboring nations. At the Polish refugee camp we visited – about 2.5 miles from the Ukrainian border – over 800,000 people have been processed, fed, and assisted in reaching another location. Thanks to the orchestrated efforts of the Poles,&nbsp;most refugees only stay for a few days until transportation is arranged for their next destination, often times heading to relatives or fellow countrymen in nearby countries.&nbsp;&nbsp;

In addition to the Poles’ heroic efforts, we saw the ground shaking actions of the Germans who with a $100 billion addition to their military budget this year will now meet their NATO pledge of committing more than two percent of their GDP towards defense. As&nbsp;the economic leader of the EU, and fourth largest economy in the world, this was a shot heard around the world.&nbsp;We met with leaders from the German parliament – their commitment&nbsp;to help Ukrainians was evident. This staunch commitment will create a renaissance&nbsp;of transatlantic relationships and inspire freedom-loving nations&nbsp;to follow in their footsteps in making the world a safer place.&nbsp;

My trust and confidence in Ukraine’s neighboring nations was not the only thing confirmed and bolstered on this trip. Our own military’s strength and presence in Europe is evident. With over 100,000 American troops in the European theatre, and having spent decades of training with our NATO partners, I’m confident in NATO’s ability to contain the madman that is Vladimir Putin.&nbsp;

America should be proud of our military – they are doing incredible work to assure allies and deter Russian aggression against NATO. The U.S. military’s previous efforts to help train the Ukrainian military has been instrumental in their ability to hold off Russia’s advances. No doubt, this training increased Ukraine’s odds of success in having shot down Russian planes. Like American soldiers tell us over and over, we are grateful for what our allies have taught us and for the opportunity to train with their soldiers, as well as within these NATO nations’ borders.&nbsp;

Many have asked about Putin’s willingness to use nuclear or other weapons of mass destruction.&nbsp;While it’s impossible to predict the&nbsp;actions of a paranoid, over-confident war monger, we cannot hesitate to do the right thing. And the right thing is to assist the brave Ukrainians in every way we can short of a direct American-Russian conflict. Putin will not respond to rhetoric. He knows only actions. We must lead by encouraging the free world to isolate Russia, and encouraging our NATO Allies to step up.&nbsp;

But, there is more we can do: all businesses around the world must immediately halt all business with Russia;&nbsp;President Biden&nbsp;must put an end to Russian imports and enforce all sanctions now; an international tribunal must immediately be formed, and war crime charges be drawn up against Putin and leaders of his military; Russian assets must be seized to rebuild Ukraine; all weapons requests from Ukraine must be honored immediately; and we must find a way to mass communicate to the people&nbsp;of Russia to expose Putin’s demonic actions.

The Ukrainian people don’t need speeches, they don’t need words, and they don’t need resolutions. They need action. They can win this war. But, the world has to step up. To whom much is given, much will be required. The U.S. has been given so much. We are still the leader of the free world. We need to start acting like it.

Marshall: Ukrainians can win this war but the world has to step up

MANHATTAN—Law enforcement authorities are investigating a shooting in Manhattan and have made an arrest.

Just before 11a.m. Sunday, police responded to the report of a gunshot victim in the 3000 block of Kimball Ave. in Manhattan, according to a media release from the RCPD.

When officers arrived on scene, they found a 23-year-old man with a gunshot wound to the leg and a 21-year-old woman who had been grazed by a bullet following a domestic altercation within an apartment.

Ryan Powell, 37, of Manhattan was immediately identified on scene as the shooter and placed into custody.

EMS transported both victims to Via Christi for treatment of their injuries. The woman was later released from the hospital.&nbsp; The male victim was later transported to Stormont Vail in Topeka for further treatment and is expected to recover.

Powell was arrested on requested charges that include two counts each of aggravated battery and aggravated assault, and three counts aggravated endangering a child. He is currently being held in the Riley County Jail in lieu of bond. He has two previous burglary or attempted burglary convictions, according to the Kansas Department of Corrections.

Police: 2 injured, Kan. felon jailed for shooting in Manhattan

HUTCHINSON—Authorities are working to determine the cause of a fire that destroyed a home in Hutchinson on Monday.

Just after 5a.m., crews responded to 315 Walker Street where they found approximately 1000 square feet of a home on fire, according to Fire Chief Steven Beer.

Firefighters initially had to attack the fire from outside. Once the fire was knocked down, as they put out the fire inside they found a large amount of debris and material in the structure that hampered their search.

One dog was rescued from the fire and turned over to animal control in good condition, according to Beer.&nbsp; There were no other injuries.&nbsp; Beer did not release an estimated damage loss.

WASHINGTON (AP) — The FBI is warning that it has seen increased interest by Russian hackers in energy companies since the start of Russia’s war against Ukraine, though it is offering no indication that a specific cyberattack is planned.

KDHE: Latest COVID-19 numbers in Kansas

MANHATTAN —When one-quarter of all U.S. college students have seriously considered suicide and the global pandemic approaches its third year, Kansas State University alumni, faculty, students, staff and friends gave $600,389 in one day last week to increase access to mental health services for K-State students and reduce the stigma of asking for help, according to a state from the university Foundation.

Donors give $600K to increase mental health services for KSU students

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Joe Biden intends to propose a minimum tax of 20% on households worth more than $100 million and cut projected budget deficits by more than $1 trillion over the next decade, according to a fact sheets released Saturday by the White House budget office.

The introduction of the minimum tax on the wealthiest Americans would represent a significant reorienting of the tax code. It would apply to the top 0.01% of households with half of the expected revenue coming from households worth $1 billion or more. The minimum tax would effectively prevent the wealthiest sliver of America from paying lower rates than families who think of themselves as middle class, while helping to generate revenues to fuel Biden’s domestic ambitions and keep the deficit in check relative to the U.S. economy.

In his proposal expected Monday, the lower deficits also reflect the economy’s resurgence as the United States emerges from the pandemic. It’s a sign that the government’s balance sheet will improve after a historic burst of spending to combat the coronavirus.

The fading of the pandemic and the growth has enabled the deficit to fall from $3.1 trillion in fiscal 2020 to $2.8 trillion last year and a projected $1.4 trillion this year. That deficit spending paid off in the form of the economy expanding at a 5.7% pace last year, the strongest growth since 1984. But inflation at a 40-year high also accompanied those robust gains as high prices have weighed on Biden’s popularity.

For the Biden administration, the proposal for the budget year that begins Oct. 1 shows that the burst of spending helped to fuel growth and put government finances in a more stable place for years to come as a result. One White House official, insisting on anonymity because the budget has yet to be released, said the proposal shows that Democrats can deliver on what Republicans have promised before without much success: faster growth and falling deficits.

Yet the Biden budget would pledge to do so through a kind of wealth tax that many Republicans say would hurt the economy by diminishing private investment in companies that create jobs and cause the wealthy to put their fortunes to work abroad.

Republican lawmakers have said that the Biden administration’s spending over the past year has led to greater economic pain in the form of higher prices. The inflation that came with reopening the U.S. economy as the closures from the pandemic began to end has been amplified by supply chain issues, low interest rates and, now, disruptions in the oil and natural gas markets because of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky pinned the blame solely on Biden’s coronavirus relief as well as his push to move away from fossil fuels.

“Washington Democrats’ response to these hardships has been as misguided as the war on American energy and runaway spending that helped create them,” McConnell said last week. “The Biden administration seems to be willing to try anything but walking back their own disastrous economic policies.”

Biden inherited from the Trump administration a budget deficit that was equal in size to 14.9% of the entire U.S. economy. But the deficit starting in the upcoming budget year will be below 5% of the economy, putting the country on a more sustainable path, according to people familiar with the budget proposal who insisted on anonymity to discuss forthcoming details.

The lower deficit totals will also be easier to manage even if interest rates rise.

The expected deficit decrease for fiscal 2022 reflects the solid recovery in hiring that occurred in large part because of Biden’s $1.9 trillion coronavirus relief package. The added jobs mean additional tax revenue, with the government likely collecting $300 billion more in revenues compared to fiscal 2021, a 10% increase.

Still, the country will face several uncertainties that could reshape Biden’s proposed budget, which will have figures that don’t include the spending omnibus recently signed into law. Biden budget seeks minimum tax on the wealthiest Americans

PAWNEE COUNTY, Nebraska —The Nebraska State Patrol has completed a three-day search operation as part of the ongoing investigation into the disappearance of Linda Dillard. Although the search effort did not locate Dillard’s remains, significant ground was covered that will assist in the investigation, according to a media release from the patrol.

“What our investigators learned this week directs the case into the next phase,” said Lt. Eric Jones, of NSP Investigative Services. “We are now confident that Linda is not in this large area. Our investigators continue to believe Linda may have been the victim of a crime. We urge anyone with information or anyone who was involved in her disappearance to come forward.”

No remains found after 3-day search for missing Neb. woman

LAWRENCE, Kan., Plastikon Healthcare, LLC is voluntarily recalling three (3) lots of Milk of Magnesia 2400 mg/30 mL Oral Suspension, one (1) lot of Acetaminophen 650mg/ 20.3mL, and six (6) lots of Magnesium Hydroxide 1200mg/Aluminum Hydroxide 1200mg/Simethicone 120mg per 30 mL to the hospital, clinic and patient level, according to a statement from the USDA. The products are being recalled due to microbial contamination and failure to properly investigate failed microbial testing.

Risk Statement: This product potentially could result in illness due to intestinal distress, such as diarrhea or abdominal pain.&nbsp; Individuals with a compromised immune system have a higher probability of developing a wide-spread, potentially life-threatening infection when ingesting or otherwise orally exposed to products contaminated by micro-organisms. To date, Plastikon has not received any customer complaints related to microbial concerns or reports of adverse events related to this recall.

FDA: Milk of Magnesia recalled due to bacterial contamination

BROWN COUNTY —A Kansas man died from injuries an accident just before 11:30am. Saturday in Brown County.

A 2007 RAV 4 driven by Catherine Martinez was northbound on U.S. 73 near 140th Road, according to Sheriff John Merchant.

The SUV traveled to the shoulder of the road. The driver overcorrected and the vehicle rolled. Martinez and a passenger identified as Lincoln Brown of Horton were ejected.&nbsp;

Lifestar transported Martinez and Brown to KU Medical Center where he died, according to Merchant.&nbsp;

EMS transported a child in the SUV to Amberwell for treatment of minor injuries. She was properly restrained according to Merchant. The accident remains under investigation.

LVIV, Ukraine (AP) — Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy accused the West of cowardice Sunday while another top official said Russia was trying to split the nation in two, like North and South Korea.

Zelenskyy made an exasperated plea for fighter jets and tanks to sustain a defense as his country continues battling Russia’s invading troops. Russia now says its main focus is on taking control of the eastern Donbas region, an apparent pullback from its earlier, more expansive goals, but one which is raising fears of a divided Ukraine.
