SEDGWICK COUNTY, Kan. –&nbsp;The Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Office is actively investigating a fatal shooting that occurred early Sunday morning&nbsp; in the 7700 block of South Broadway near Haysville, according to Sheriff's Department spokesman Branden Stitt.

At 2:58 a.m., Sedgwick County Emergency Communications received an automated crash detection alert from a mobile device in the area. Haysville police officers, along with Sedgwick County EMS and Fire District 1, responded and found an SUV that had crashed into a tree.

When first responders entered the vehicle, they found a 43-year-old Haysville man with gunshot wounds. Sedgwick County EMS took him to a local hospital in critical condition, where he later died. A female passenger suffered minor injuries in the crash.

This remains an active investigation, and our detectives and deputies are actively following up on leads.&nbsp;

VATICAN CITY (AP) — Pope Leo XIV declared a 15-year-old computer whiz the Catholic Church’s first millennial saint Sunday, giving the next generation of Catholics a relatable role model who used technology to spread the faith and earn the nickname “God’s influencer.”

Leo canonized Carlo Acutis, who died in 2006, during an open-air Mass in St. Peter’s Square before an estimated 80,000 people, many of them millennials and couples with young children. During the first saint-making Mass of his pontificate, Leo also canonized another popular Italian figure who died young, Pier Giorgio Frassati.

Leo said both men created “masterpieces” out of their lives by dedicating them to God.

“The greatest risk in life is to waste it outside of God’s plan,” Leo said in his homily. The new saints “are an invitation to all of us, especially young people, not to squander our lives, but to direct them upwards and make them masterpieces.”

An ordinary life that became extraordinary

Acutis was born on May 3, 1991, in London to a wealthy but not particularly observant Catholic family. They moved back to Milan soon after he was born and he enjoyed a typical, happy childhood, albeit marked by increasingly intense religious devotion.

Acutis was particularly interested in computer science and devoured college-level books on programming even as a youngster. He earned the nickname “God’s Influencer,” thanks to his main tech legacy: a multilingual website documenting so-called Eucharistic miracles recognized by the church, a project he completed at a time when the development of such sites was the domain of professionals.

He was known to spend hours in prayer before the Eucharist each day. The Catholic hierarchy has been trying to promote the practice of Eucharistic adoration because, according to polls, most Catholics don’t believe Christ is physically present in the Eucharistic hosts.

But Acutis limited himself to an hour of video games a week, apparently deciding long before TikTok that human relationships were far more important than virtual ones. That discipline and restraint has proved appealing to the Catholic hierarchy, which has sounded the alarm about the dangers of today's tech-driven society.

In October 2006, at age 15, Acutis fell ill with what was quickly diagnosed as acute leukemia. Within days, he was dead. He was entombed in Assisi, which known for its association with another popular saint, St. Francis.

In the years since his death, young Catholics have flocked by the millions to Assisi, where they can see the young Acutis through a glass-sided tomb, dressed in jeans, Nike sneakers and a sweatshirt. He seems as if he's sleeping, and questions have swirled about how his body was so well preserved, especially since parts of his heart have even toured the world as relics.

Both saint-making ceremonies had been scheduled for earlier this year, but were&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/vatican-saint-acutis-posponed-9fdb99acaf0296974dc6216851c9167a">postponed following Pope Francis’ death</a>&nbsp;in April. Francis had fervently pushed the Acutis sainthood case forward, convinced that the church needed someone like him to attract young Catholics to the faith while addressing the promises and perils of the digital age.

“It’s like I can maybe not be as great as Carlo may be, but I can be looking after him and be like, ‘What would Carlo do?’” said Leo Kowalsky, an 8th grader at a Chicago school attached to the Blessed Carlo Acutis Parish.

Kowalsky said he was particularly excited that his own namesake — Pope Leo — would be canonizing the patron of his school. “It’s kind of all mashed up into one thing, so it is a joy to be a part of,” Kowalsky said in an interview last week.

Much of Acutis’ popularity is thanks to a concerted campaign by the Vatican to give the next generation of faithful a “saint next door” who was ordinary but did extraordinary things in life. In Acutis, they found a relatable tech-savvy millennial — the term used to describe a person born roughly between 1981 and 1996 who was the first generation to reach adulthood in the new&nbsp;<a href="https://www.britannica.com/science/millennium-time-period">millennium</a>.

The Vatican said 36 cardinals, 270 bishops and hundreds of priests had signed up to celebrate the Mass along with Leo in a sign of the saints’ enormous appeal to the hierarchy and ordinary faithful alike.

An hour before the Mass, St. Peter’s Square was already full with pilgrims, many of them young millennial Italians, many with toddlers in strollers.

“I learned from different people what his professors, his teachers said about his joy and the light he carried around him,” said Leopoldo Antimi, a 27-year-old Roman who got to the square early to secure a spot. “So for me personally as an Italian, even on social networks that are used so much, it is important to have him as an influencer.”

Matthew Schmalz, professor of religious studies at Holy Cross college in Worcester, Massachusetts, said Acutis' canonization extends the church tradition of popular piety to the digital age.

“He becomes an emblem or model of how Catholics should approach and use the digital world--with discipline and with a focus on traditional Catholic spirituality that defies the passage of time,” he said in statement. “He is a new saint of simplicity for the ever complex digital landscape of contemporary Catholicism.”

Frassati, the other saint being canonized Sunday, lived from 1901-1925, when he died at age 24 of polio. He was born into a prominent Turin family but is known for his devotion to serving the poor and carrying out acts of charity while spreading his faith to his friends.

🎥 Millions flock to tomb of teen computer whiz, first millennial saint

KANSAS CITY —Law enforcement are investigating two suspects on multiple allegations after a chase near Kansas City.

Just after 8:30 a.m. September 5, sheriff's deputies attempted to stop a vehicle for expired tags traveling northbound on Interstate 49 from Archie, Missouri, according to the Cass County Sheriff's office.

Deputies pursued the car into rural Peculiar, where the vehicle traveled off road and the driver got out of the vehicle. The driver then ran from the vehicle for a short time before deputies caught up with him. He’s been identified as 34-year-old Shannon Barwick of Exeter, Missouri.

The vehicle and trailer attached to it were confirmed to be stolen. Barwick has been charged with Aggravated Fleeing a Stop/Detention and Tampering with a Motor Vehicle - 1st Degree&nbsp; He’s being held at the Cass County Jail with no bond allowed. 

The passenger has been identified as 39-year-old John Gray of Goodman, Missouri. Gray had four active felony warrants from two separate counties at the time of his arrest. Gray had two from McDonald County, Missouri (Stealing/$750 or more and Domestic Assault - 3rd Degree)  and two from Newton County, Missouri (Burglary - 1st Degree/Domestic Assault 3rd- Degree and Tampering with a Motor Vehicle - 1st Degree/Motor Vehicle Stealing/Watercraft/Aircraft). He’s currently being held at the Cass County Jail.&nbsp;

Suspects wanted for multiple felonies captured near KC

NEW YORK (AP) — President Donald Trump was loudly booed at the men's final of the&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/hub/tennis">U.S. Open</a>&nbsp;on Sunday, where extra security caused by his visit led to lines&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/us-open-fans-delay-7e9c68318c868b01cb49fa2862b6a37c">long enough</a>&nbsp;that many people missed the start of play, even after organizers delayed it.

Wearing a suit and long, red tie, Trump briefly emerged from his suite about 45 minutes before the match started and heard a mix of boos and cheers from an Arthur Ashe Stadium that was still mostly empty. No announcement proceeded his appearance, and it was brief enough that some in the crowd missed it.

Trump appeared again to more boos before the National Anthem. Standing in salute, the president was shown briefly on the arena's big screens during the anthem, and offered a smirk that briefly made the boos louder.

When the anthem was over, the Republican pointed to a small group of supporters seated nearby, then sat on the suite's balcony to watch the match intently. He mostly didn't applaud, even following major points that energized the rest of the crowd as Spain's Carlos Alcaraz bested&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/sinner-australian-open-djokovic-zverev-5bac6dd5b82549ba4577cddc0c3c9e8a">Jannik Sinner</a>&nbsp;of Italy.

Trump was shown on the big screen again after the first set ended, and elicited a roar of louder boos and some piercing whistles. He raised his left fist in salute as the noise continued in the stadium, which with a capacity of 24,000 is one of the largest in tennis.

The president later moved back inside the suite, where he was seen seated at a table with family members and appeared to be eating, but he was back in his seat shortly before match point. Cameras briefly flashed on Trump as Alcaraz celebrated, but his reaction to the conclusion was as muted as it had been throughout most of the match. This time, there was little crowd reaction, too.

Organizers pushed the start of the match back half an hour to give people more time to pass through enhanced screening checkpoints reminiscent of security at airports. Still, thousands of increasingly frustrated fans remained in line outside as the match got underway. Many seats, especially those in upper rows, stayed empty for nearly an hour.

The Secret Service issued a statement saying that protecting Trump “required a comprehensive effort” and noting that it “may have contributed to delays for attendees.”

“We sincerely thank every fan for their patience and understanding,” it said.

Trump attended the final as a guest of Rolex, despite imposing steep tariffs on the Swiss watchmaker's home country. The U.S. Tennis Association also tried to limit negative reaction to Trump's attendance being shown on ABC’s national telecast, saying in a statement before play began: "We regularly ask our broadcasters to refrain from showcasing off-court disruptions.”

The reactions to Trump didn't ultimately constitute big disruptions, though.

Going to the U.S. Open was the latest example of Trump having built&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/trump-presidential-travel-biden-first-six-months-c619e9e39f2f57081ce7d29c3f986acc">the bulk of his second term’s domestic travel</a>&nbsp;around attending major sports events rather than hitting the road to make policy announcements or address the kind of large rallies he so relished as a candidate.

Since returning to the White House in January and prior to Sunday’s U.S Open swing, Trump has gone to&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/trump-nfl-super-bowl-first-president-766c628f4ea3faf38d100e4f33f2ac8c">the Super Bowl</a>&nbsp;in New Orleans and the&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/trump-nascar-daytona-500-sports-20a1f0a75207ec57dfa4c58aa3934875">Daytona 500</a>, as well as UFC fights&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/trump-ufc-miami-fight-sports-6461901bb3d5f2eec477674d02333a7f">in Miami</a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/mma-ufc-trump-tyson-c0d9279b626e69cc0ca62474c7dafa2f">Newark, New Jersey</a>, the&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/trump-ncaa-wrestling-championships-sports-trips-8f68a03e4c6926ef2e159e67d70a8466">NCAA wrestling championships in Philadelphia</a>&nbsp;and the FIFA Club&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/trump-fifa-club-world-cup-92a5e1cf1e723bafed86cbf72e289646">World Cup final</a>&nbsp;in East Rutherford, New Jersey. Some of those crowds cheered him, but&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/trump-fifa-club-world-cup-92a5e1cf1e723bafed86cbf72e289646">people booed</a>&nbsp;him at other events.

The president accepted Rolex’s invitation despite his administration imposing a whopping 39% tariff on Swiss products. That's more than 2 1/2 times higher than levies on&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/hub/european-union">European Union</a>&nbsp;goods exported to the U.S. and nearly four times higher than on British exports to the U.S.

The White House declined to comment on Trump accepting a corporate client's invitation at the tournament, but the president has had few qualms about&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/trump-scotland-golf-course-opening-legal-issues-92aa09043e036d6aa87ad99e5fd755bb">blurring lines</a>&nbsp;between political and foreign policy decisions and efforts to boost the profits of his family business. He's&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/trump-crypto-projects-industry-scam-memecoin-0e2d7ca5170bf594d44a391884ec52b3">tirelessly promoted</a>&nbsp;his cryptocurrency interests and&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/trump-golf-new-scottish-course-family-profits-207ec2a182508f46325653952869052e">luxury golf properties</a>, and even announced that the U.S. will host the&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/what-is-the-g-20-summit-11bb24d5d7c09ca951020b127498a6e6">Group of 20</a>&nbsp;summit in December 2026 at his Doral golf resort in Florida.

No large street protests against Trump could be seen from the tournament's main stadium on Sunday. But attendees also steered clear of wearing any of the the Republican's signature “Make America Great Again” caps.

A 58-year-old tennis fan originally from Turin, Italy, came from her home in the Boston area to watch the final and said that when she bought a U.S. Open cap, she went with a fuchsia-hued one so it wouldn’t be mistaken for the signature darker color of MAGA hats.

“I was careful not to get the red one,” said the fan, who declined to give her name because of her employer's rules about being publicly quoted.

Among those attending with Trump were White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt, Attorney General Pam Bondi, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, special envoy Steve Witkoff and Susie Wiles, the White House chief of staff. Trump spent various portions of the match engaged in conversation with many of those around him.

Elsewhere in the crowd were a slew of celebrities — some of whom publicly backed then-Vice President Kamala Harris during last year's election. Among them were Pink, Bruce Springsteen and Shonda Rhimes. In pre-match interviews shown on large stadium screens with the likes of Martha Stewart and Jon Hamm, the questions asked stuck to tennis and pop culture — not Trump and politics.

The president nonetheless was excited enough about his trip to tell reporters on Air Force One during the flight to New York when the plane flew over Ashe stadium — though the covered roof kept those inside from reacting.

Trump was once a U.S. Open mainstay, but hadn't attended since he was booed at a quarterfinals match in September 2015, months after launching his first presidential campaign.

The Trump Organization once controlled its own U.S. Open suite, which was adjacent to the stadium's television broadcasting booth, but&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/7dd4f9b8a36a4569b5168a8186bb0731">suspended it in 2017</a>, during the first year of Trump’s first term. The family business is now&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/trump-business-interests-family-middle-east-cryptocurrency-cbb7d2354304ce0308800819944cf3f8">being run by Trump’s sons</a>&nbsp;with their father back in the White House.

Trump was born in Queens, home of the U.S. Open, and for decades was a New York-area real estate mogul and, later, a reality TV star. Attending the tournament before he was a politician, he usually sat in his company's suite’s balcony during night matches and was frequently shown on the arena’s video screens.

SEDGWICK COUNTY –Law enforcement investigating a fatal gunfight at a liquor store in on Labor Day in Wichita announced an arrest on Tuesday.

Just after 2p.m. Monday, officers were called to a liquor store on North Broadway in Wichita, according to a media release. First responders found three men with gunshot wounds including&nbsp;19-year-old Mario Gustavo. He was pronounced dead at the scene. The suspect identified from Sedgwick County booking records as 23-year-old Jaime Medina and another man were taken to a hospital for treatment of critical injuries.

Investigators learned that&nbsp;a disturbance in the parking lot led to gunfire.

A retired Wichita police lieutenant saw a vehicle flee the scene and followed it. Officers stopped the car, driven by a woman, near the 800 block of North Main Street. A male passenger, identified as an associate of Gustavo, had a gunshot wound to the hand and was taken to a hospital in critical but stable condition. Investigators believe he was shot at the exact location as the other three men.&nbsp; Medina remains jailed on a&nbsp;$1,000,000 bond on requested charges of first degree murder and battery, according to online jail records.

Kennedy Jr. as he faced&nbsp;<a href="https://kansasreflector.com/2025/09/04/repub/rfk-jr-battles-with-members-of-us-senate-panel-over-vaccines-removal-of-cdc-director/">a grueling group of senators</a>&nbsp;Thursday, U.S. Sen. Roger Marshall of Kansas gave him the opportunity to explain his views on vaccines and leadership.

Democrats and Republicans alike expressed their distaste and concern for Kennedy’s decisions as leader of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services during a roughly three-hour hearing before the U.S. Senate Finance Committee. Kennedy defended staff turnover, the erosion of vaccine investment and funding stalls.

But Marshall spent his allotted five minutes leveling with the secretary.

“One of your themes for the CDC is transparency,” Marshall said.

Part of that transparency, he said, is sharing what Kennedy and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention know about vaccines so parents can be better equipped to make decisions. An aide standing behind Marshall held a large sign containing a graphic depicting the current CDC recommendations for vaccinations for children.

“By the time they’re 18 months, they’ve had 18 jabs,” Marshall said. “By the time they get to be old enough to vote, they have 76 jabs.”

An aide moved the sign with the graphic to the side to reveal another sign, which read in bright red type, “76 JABS!”

Marshall, a former OB-GYN who said he’s delivered 5,000 babies, also said he doesn’t understand why newborns are given a hepatitis vaccine if a mother has no risk factors. The hepatitis vaccine is typically the first vaccine a newborn receives.

Hepatitis B is most commonly transmitted from mother to child at birth, and an estimated 1.1 million people died from hepatitis B infections in 2022, according to the World Health Organization.

Marshall said vaccines should be treated like medication and asked how Kennedy uses transparency to do just that.

Kennedy agreed with Marshall, confronting accusations that he is anti-vaccine.

“Saying I’m anti-vaccine is like saying I’m anti-medicine,” Kennedy said. “I’m pro-medicine, but I understand some medicines harm people. Some of them have risks. Some of them have benefits that outweigh those risks for some populations.”

Marshall said he and Kennedy are fighting to empower parents to make their own decisions surrounding vaccines.

“I guess before the press labels me wrong, I’m not anti-vaccine either,” Marshall said, expressing support for the MMR, DPT, polio and smallpox vaccines.

Marshall also gave Kennedy time to clear up any confusion about his stance on the morbidity and mortality of COVID-19 vaccines.

According to the National Center for Health Statistics, which Kennedy oversees, more than 1.2 million deaths have been attributed to COVID-19 as of Aug. 30. In an estimated 87% of those deaths, COVID-19 was the underlying cause of death, and it was listed as a contributing cause in the remaining deaths.

Earlier in the hearing, Kennedy said he didn’t know the total COVID-19 death toll in the U.S., refuting existing estimates of both the death toll and vaccine efficacy rates. He blamed “data chaos” at the CDC, which he also oversees.

Marshall agreed with Kennedy, articulating the difference between the number of people dying from COVID and the number of those who died with COVID.

“The calculus is different and it’s complicated,” Kennedy said, “and, you know, if you want to just turn everything into a sound bite, it makes it — you can’t have a grown-up conversation.”

RFK Jr., Kan. U.S. senator find common ground on vaccines at contentious hearing

KANSAS CITY (AP) —Lawmakers in Missouri are the&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/redistricting-gerrymander-missouri-trump-620f1fbd9bccb4dfa2f3840e03fbb4c6">latest to try to draw</a>&nbsp;a new U.S. House map for the 2026 election that could improve the Republican Party's numbers in Congress.

It's a trend that&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/texas-governor-redistricting-trump-33bfdc8790cdf8201d80c8c89258df3d">began in Texas</a>, at the behest of President Donald Trump, to try to keep GOP control of the House next year. California Democrats responded with their own map to help their party, though&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/california-texas-redistricting-congressional-map-4c22e21d5d4022d33a257045693b6fd4">it still requires voter approval.</a>

The U.S. Supreme Court also has said there is no federal prohibition on&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/gerrymandering-texas-congress-redistricting-0c751f48a7757fc11214472944670413">political gerrymandering</a>, in which districts are intentionally drawn to one party’s advantage.

Nationally, Democrats need to gain three seats next year to take control of the House. The party of the president typically loses seats in the midterm congressional elections.

But after that session ended, Republican Gov. Greg Abbott quickly called another one — and Democrats returned, satisfied that they had made their point and that California was proceeding with a counter plan.

Indiana Republicans meet with Trump about redistricting

Indiana’s Republican legislative leaders met privately with Trump to discuss&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/hub/redistricting">redistricting</a>&nbsp;while in Washington, D.C., on Aug. 26. Some also met with Vice President JD Vance.

Several Indiana legislators came out in support of a mid-cycle map change following the meetings. But others have expressed hesitation. It remains unclear if Indiana lawmakers will hold a special session on redistricting.

Louisiana Republicans looking at times for a special session

Louisiana lawmakers are being told to keep their calendars open between Oct. 23 and Nov. 13. The U.S. Supreme Court is scheduled to hear arguments Oct. 15 over a challenge to the state’s congressional map.

Republican state Rep. Gerald “Beau” Beaullieu, who chairs a House committee that oversees redistricting, said the idea is to have lawmakers available to come back to work in case the Supreme Court issues a ruling quickly.

Republicans now hold four of Louisiana’s six congressional seats.

Ohio must redraw its maps before the 2026 midterms

Because of the way its current districts were enacted, the state constitution requires Republican-led Ohio&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/politics-ohio-state-government-01117758be7ece7ce12ebc04baa0ce05">to adopt new House maps before the 2026</a>&nbsp;elections. Ohio Democrats are bracing for Republicans to try to expand their 10-5 congressional majority.

Democrats don’t have much power to stop it. But “we will fight, we will organize, we will make noise at every step of the process,” Ohio Democratic Party Chair Kathleen Clyde said.

New York Democrats try to change state law

New York, similar to California, has an independent commission that redraws districts after every census.

State Democrats have introduced legislation to allow mid-decade redistricting, but the soonest new maps could be in place would be for the 2028 elections. That is because the proposal would require an amendment to the state constitution, a change that would have to pass the Legislature twice and be approved by voters.

Maryland Democrats planning a response to Texas

Democratic state Sen. Clarence Lam has announced he is filing redistricting legislation for consideration during the 2026 session. Democratic House Majority Leader David Moon also said he would sponsor legislation triggering redistricting in Maryland if any state conducted mid-decade redistricting. Democrats control seven of Maryland’s eight congressional seats.

Florida’s governor pledges support for redistricting

Florida Republican state House Speaker Daniel Perez said his chamber&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/jd-vance-indiana-redistricting-donald-trump-fafc5bd34f741b3886913e792ab33048">will take up redistricting</a>&nbsp;through a special committee. Republican Gov. A court orders Utah to redraw its districts

Utah Republicans hold all four of the state’s U.S. House seats under a map the GOP-led Legislature approved after the 2020 census. But a judge ruled Aug. 25 that&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/utah-congressional-map-redistricting-trump-midterms-100656aa263866946e0fd83f0319894a">the map was unlawful</a>&nbsp;because the Legislature had circumvented an independent redistricting commission that was established by voters to ensure districts don’t deliberately favor one party.

The judge gave lawmakers until Sept. 24 to adopt a map, which could increase Democrats’ chances of winning a seat.

Where Kan. and other states stand in the battle over US House redistricting maps

KANSAS CITY—Law enforcement are investigating another homicide in Kansas City.

Just before 11:30p.m. Saturday, police were dispatched to the 8200 block of Bannister Road in Kansas City, Missouri. on a shooting call, according to KCPD Captain Jake Becchina.

On arrival officers were directed inside the business there where they located an adult male shooting victim unresponsive on the ground. Officers rendered aid to the victim and summoned EMS to the scene who declared the victim deceased.

Homicide detectives are investigating and canvassing for witnesses. Preliminary investigation indicates that the victim entered the business shortly before the shooting and had an interaction with one or more additional patrons that were also inside the business. That interaction escalated to gunfire and the victim was struck. There is no known suspect information at this time and no one is in custody.

NEW YORK (AP) — Federal officials have agreed to restore&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/health">health-</a>&nbsp;and science-related webpages and data under to a lawsuit settlement with doctors groups and other organizations who sued.

The settlement was announced this week by the lead plaintiffs in the case, the Washington State Medical Association.

Soon after President Donald Trump’s inauguration, federal health officials&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/trump-gender-ideology-sex-pronouns-order-transgender-2d7e54837f5d0651ed0cefa5ea0d6301">deleted or removed information</a>&nbsp;on a range of topics including pregnancy risks, opioid-use disorder and the AIDS epidemic. The move was made in reaction to a Trump executive order that told agencies to stop using the term “gender” in&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/trump-dei-businesses-diversity-05fb71a91cab7e3bbe8729f6bdeb4983">federal policies and documents</a>.

The administration saw it as a move to end the promotion of “gender ideology.” Doctors, scientists and public health advocates saw it as an “egregious example of government overreach,” says Dr. John Bramhall, the organization’s president, said in a statement.

“This was trusted health information that vanished in a blink of an eye — resources that, among other things, physicians rely on to manage patients’ health conditions and overall care,” Bramhall said.

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services has agreed to restore more than 100 websites and resources to the state they were in, said Graham Short, a spokesperson for the Washington State doctors’ group.

“We expect the sites will be restored in the coming weeks,” Short said in an email.

The case was filed in federal court in Seattle. The plaintiffs include, among others, the Vermont Medical Society, the Washington State Nurses Association and the International Association of Providers of AIDS Care.

The defendants included U.S. Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. and federal health agencies and officials who work under him.

Federal officials responded to questions about the settlement with this statement: “HHS remains committed to its mission of removing radical gender and DEI ideology from federal programs, subject to applicable law, to ensure taxpayer dollars deliver meaningful results for the American people.”

The case is similar to one filed in Washington, D.C., by Doctors for America and others against the government. That lawsuit also sought to force the government to restore health information to the public, and the two cases overlapped somewhat in the websites they targeted, Short said.

In July, a judge in the Doctors for America case ordered restoration of websites. As of last week, 167 of the websites at issue had been restored and 33 were still under review, according to a court filing.

Trump administration agrees to restore health websites and data

JOHNSON COUNTY —A Kansas police K9 returned to work last week after being stabbed while assisting during an arrest last month.

 After a full recovery and medical clearance, K9 Dagger returned to full duty, according to a social media report from the Shawnee Police Department.&nbsp;

Just before 4a.m. August 5, the Kansas City, Kansas, Police Department was dispatched to disturbance at a home in the 900 block of Riverview, according to a media release.

At the home, officers spoke with the caller who said a family member had returned to the. home after an earlier assault involving a knife. When officers approached the home to talk to the man, he barricaded himself inside.

The Shawnee Police Department assisted and brought K9 Dagger, a Belgian Malinois, to the scene. When officers went inside the home to take make an arrest, the suspect stabbed the K9 officer.

Dagger was transported to a local veterinarian and was expected to make a full recovery. Dagger has been with the Shawnee Police Department since 2023.

At 7:30 a.m., the suspect surrendered and was arrested.&nbsp;

In 2024 the Kansas legislature passed&nbsp; “Bane’s Law,” that increases penalties for inflicting harm on law enforcement animals, including horses. The felony crime is now punishable by a minimum of 90 days in jail and a minimum fine of $10,000.

HUTCHINSON —The Cottonwood Building at the Kansas State Fair was evacuated due to a gas leak on Saturday, according to a media release from the Kansas Fire Marshal's office.&nbsp; 

Staff from the Fire Marshal's office responded to a report of a smell of gas in the building and detected a dangerous buildup of gas in the building, which contains a food court.

The Hutchinson Fire Department was at the scene and pushed fresh air into the building to dissipate the gas. They were working to determine the source of the gas and that it was safe to reopen the building.

WASHINGTON (AP) — President&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/hub/donald-trump">Donald Trump</a>&nbsp;on Saturday amplified his promises to send National Guard&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/trump-chicago-baltimore-law-enforcement-6d7c80258f17c3d679358467531f7e9d">troops and immigration agents</a>&nbsp;to Chicago by posting a parody image from “Apocalypse Now” featuring a ball of flames as helicopters zoom over the nation’s third-largest city.

“‘I love the smell of deportations in the morning,’” Trump wrote on his social media site. “Chicago about to find out why it’s called the Department of WAR.”

The president offered no details beyond the label “Chipocalypse Now,” a play on the title of Francis Ford Coppola’s dystopian 1979 film set in the Vietnam war, in which a character says: “I love the smell of napalm in the morning.”

In response to the post, Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker, a Democrat, called Trump a “wannabe dictator.”

Trump on Friday signed an executive order seeking to rename the Defense Department the Department of War, after months of campaigning to be considered for the Nobel Peace Prize. The renaming requires congressional approval.

The illustration in Trump’s post shows him against a backdrop of the Chicago skyline, wearing a hat matching that of the movie’s war-loving and amoral Lt. Col. Kilgore, played by Robert Duvall.

Trump’s weekend post follows his repeated threats to add Chicago to the list of other Democratic-led cities he’s targeted for expanded federal enforcement. His administration is set to step up immigration enforcement in Chicago, as it did in&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/bovino-border-patrol-immigration-los-angeles-chicago-03b908a84106fae80a80b2837625eef7">Los Angeles</a>, and&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/trump-chicago-baltimore-law-enforcement-6d7c80258f17c3d679358467531f7e9d">deploy National Guard troops</a>.

In addition to sending troops to&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/trump-newsom-los-angeles-national-guard-d6c8450a3ac2de34e669ef0836d22cbc">Los Angeles</a>&nbsp;in June, Trump has deployed them since last month in Washington, as part of his unprecedented&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/trump-washington-dc-national-guard-democrats-politics-03e3f73a6d0eacd9754618e555349b27">law enforcement takeover</a>&nbsp;of the nation’s capital.

He’s also suggested that&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/trump-chicago-baltimore-law-enforcement-6d7c80258f17c3d679358467531f7e9d">Baltimore</a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/trump-national-guard-new-orleans-chicago-baltimore-c9df92974b9fbb2f3be0bb015a512eff">New Orleans</a>&nbsp;could get the same treatment, and on Friday even mentioned federal authorities possibly heading for Portland, Oregon, to “wipe ’em out,” meaning protesters. He could have been mistakenly describing video from demonstrations in that city years ago.

Details about Trump’s promised Chicago operation have been sparse, but there’s&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/chicago-trump-national-guard-crime-illinois-ef8f6e337e0a120634a350db84d60f46">already widespread opposition</a>. City and state leaders have said they plan to sue the Trump administration. Pritzker, a possible 2028 presidential candidate, is also fiercely opposed to it.

The president “is threatening to go to war with an American city,” Pritzker wrote on X over an image of Trump’s post. “This is not a joke. This is not normal.”

He added: “Donald Trump isn’t a strongman, he’s a scared man. Illinois won’t be intimidated by a wannabe dictator.”

Trump has suggested that he has nearly limitless powers when it comes to deploying the National Guard. At times he’s even touched on questions about his being a dictator.

“Most people are saying, ‘If you call him a dictator, if he stops crime, he can be whatever he wants’ — I am not a dictator, by the way,” Trump said last month. He added, “Not that I don’t have — I would — the right to do anything I want to do.”

KANSAS CITY —Authorities are investigating the cause of an apartment fire and a later a house fire in Kansas City, Missouri.

Just after 6:30p.m. Saturday, crews&nbsp;responded to a reported apartment fire in the area of 18th Street and Brooklyn Avenue, according to Battalion Chief Riley Nolan.&nbsp;

 </figure>KANSAS CITY —Authorities are investigating the cause of an apartment fire and a later a house fire in Kansas City, Missouri.Just after 6:30p.m. Saturday, crews&nbsp;responded to a reported apartment fire in the area of 18th Street and Brooklyn Avenue, according to Battalion Chief Riley Nolan.&nbsp; On arrival, crews reported heavy fire and smoke from a two-story structure off of 18th Street and Euclid. An offensive fire attack was ordered, and interior operations were initiated using multiple handlines. Two separate apartments were involved in the fire, which was brought "under control" by companies on scene at 7:02 p.m. Searches of the structure came back all clear. There were no injuries reported.Just before 8p.m. Saturday, crews&nbsp;responded to a reported fire in the 5900 block of Bellefontaine Avenue, according to Nolan.Crews reported smoke and fire showing from a 1-story home on arrival. Offensive operations were ordered, and two handlines were advanced into the structure to extinguish the fire. &nbsp;The fire was brought under control at 8:09 p.m. Companies on scene continued with salvage and overhaul operations while extinguishing hot spots. There were no injuries reported.
