WASHINGTON (AP) — It’s something that goes along with being a member of Congress, no matter your party or your status: constant threats to your life, and the unshakeable feeling that they’re only getting worse.

In the almost two years since the&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/hub/capitol-siege">Capitol insurrection,</a>&nbsp;in which supporters of former President Donald Trump broke into the Capitol and hunted House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and members of Congress, threats to lawmakers and their families have increased sharply. Early Friday, an&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/paul-pelosi-assaulted-156ece77186eb11b97260af3c5122f67">assailant looking for Pelosi</a>&nbsp;broke into her San Francisco home and used a hammer to attack her husband Paul, who suffered blunt-force injuries and was hospitalized.

It is, in fact, getting worse: The U.S. Capitol Police investigated almost 10,000 threats to members last year, more than twice the number from four years earlier.

“We are 100%, completely vulnerable and the risks are increasing,” says Illinois Rep. Mike Quigley, a Chicago-area Democrat. “If someone wants to harm you, they know where you live, they know where you work.”

Lawmakers have pressured congressional leaders and the Capitol Police for better security, especially for their families and their homes outside of Washington. They have made some progress, with security officials promising to pay for upgrades to certain security systems and an increased Capitol Police presence outside Washington. But the vast majority of members are mostly on their own as they figure out how to keep themselves and their families safe in a country where political violence has become alarmingly frequent.

The attack on Paul Pelosi happened when Nancy Pelosi was out of town, which meant there was less of a security presence in their home.

“It’s attacks like this that make all of us stand back and wonder what we can do better,” says Rep. Rodney Davis, R-Ill., who was at a baseball practice four years ago in Alexandria, Virginia, when a gunman wounded Rep. Steve Scalise, R-La., and four other people.

Davis, who was defeated for reelection in his Republican primary earlier this year, says security needs to be improved for members and their families, and “we also have to work to tone down some of the violent rhetoric that inspires some of these individuals to do what they do.”

As have many of their colleagues, Davis and Quigley both say they have improved security at their homes in recent years. Two years after the baseball shooting, an Illinois man was arrested for threatening to shoot Davis in the head. Randall Tarr pleaded guilty to federal charges and was sentenced to probation.

Davis has since urged his colleagues to report all threats to the police and work with local prosecutors to make sure people are charged. “You’ve got to take that threat seriously,” he says.

Incidents like that are disturbingly common. On Friday, just hours after the assault on Pelosi, the Justice Department announced that a man pleaded guilty to making threatening telephone calls to an unidentified California congressman’s office and saying he had “a lot of AR-15s” and wanted to kill the congressman and members of his staff.

In July, a man accosted New York&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/lee-zeldin-ny-governor-nominee-attacked-2189bf9c19b1d52f9a824f770e400399">Rep. Lee Zeldin,</a>&nbsp;a Republican who is running for governor of New York, as he spoke at a campaign event and told Zeldin, “You’re done.” Zeldin wrestled the man to the ground and escaped with only a minor scrape.

Rep. Pramila Jayapal, D-Wash., revealed earlier this year that a man came to her house with a gun, screaming obscenities. After the incident, she wrote congressional leaders a letter and asked them to do more to keep members safe.

Lawmakers have received some upgraded security since the Jan. 6 insurrection. In July, the House Sergeant at Arms sent a letter to all House offices saying that members could have up to $10,000 reimbursed for security upgrades in their homes, including intrusion detection systems, cameras, locks and lighting. But in reality, sophisticated security can cost much more.

And some members do get added security, if there are serious threats. Nancy Pelosi and other congressional leaders have Capitol Police security with them at all times, as do members who are deemed to be most vulnerable at any given time. That security apparatus doesn’t always extend to families when the member isn’t at home, however, making spouses like Paul Pelosi more vulnerable.

Members of the House committee investigating the Jan. 6 insurrection also have round-the-clock protection. Rep. Bennie Thompson, D-Miss., the chair of the committee, issued a statement Friday urging “federal agencies and law enforcement to redouble their efforts to protect officials, our elections, and our democracy in the days ahead.”

Illinois Rep. Adam Kinzinger, one of two Republicans on that committee, recently released menacing voicemails he had received threatening his wife and baby. Kinzinger tweeted Friday after Paul Pelosi’s assault that “every GOP candidate and elected official must speak out, and now.”

Republican Rep. Davis also urged his colleagues, Democrat and Republican, to condemn the attack.

“The attack on Paul Pelosi is not only an attack on Nancy Pelosi and her family,” Davis said. “It’s an attack on all of us.”

Attack on Pelosi home highlights rising threats to lawmakers

RENO COUNTY —A&nbsp; Kansas man accused of child sex crimes has been charged in Reno County.

According to court filings, 30-year-old Anthony Oskar Krause of Hutchinson is alleged to have had sex with a child under the age of 14 on May 11, and to have committed aggravated indecent liberties with that same child on May 17.

Krause is also accused of soliciting the same child for the unlawful act on May 8, and to attempt to persuade the child to commit such an act on that same date.&nbsp;

The rape and indecent liberties counts as charged are off-grid felonies, potentially punishable by a hard 50 sentence, which would be a mandatory 50 years in prison.&nbsp;

Krause's next court appearance is November 30 and he is jailed on&nbsp;$325,000 bond

Kan. man charged with sex crimes involving child under age 14

 — Joseph Earl Brueggemann had green eyes, sandy brown hair and loved 
fishing. He left behind a 15-year-old daughter and beloved elderly cat 
when he died on the floor of the Sedgwick County Jail at age 38, alone 
and with an untreated skull fracture.

“He didn’t deserve this,” his mother, Pat Brueggemann said. “He did not deserve what happened to him.”

Preliminary autopsy results 
determined that Joseph Brueggemann’s cause of death on Aug. 24 was from a
 heart attack caused by a blood clot. Pat Brueggemann said she had a lot
 of concerns about the way he died and how he was treated in the jail, 
especially about the medication given to him and the jail’s treatment of
 his mental health issues.

Col. Jared Schechter, jail administrator, said the facility prioritized medical care, but with a
 staffing shortage of almost 100 people and limited mental health 
resources, the jail struggles to provide everyone with needed treatment.

Schechter said he couldn’t speak to the specifics of the Brueggemann case but gave an overview of the struggles the jail faces.&nbsp;

“We’re not a mental health treatment 
facility and our resources do become stretched thin with the amount of 
inmates that we do have,” Schechter said. “We try to prioritize 
everybody we can see and get them the access they need and help they 
need but they are still stretched thin with mental health needs in the 
jail.”

Pat Brueggemann said her son was 
taken to jail after an altercation with his father. After three days 
without hearing from him, his family searched the jail database and the 
nearby hospitals, without luck. Pat Brueggemann eventually found him 
listed under a misspelled name in the Sedgwick County Jail system.

Pat Brueggemann said jail officials 
told her that her son spent six days in a detox pod without incident, 
before becoming erratic and aggressive on Aug. 17. He was moved to a 
temporary disciplinary cell where he dove head first into the ground, 
causing a skull fracture. Pat Brueggemann said his cell window was 
covered with paper, so he couldn’t see out and guards couldn’t see in.

She and her daughter obtained the 
footage of Joseph Brueggemann’s skull fracture from the Kansas Bureau of
 Investigation. Jail officials told them they weren’t aware of the 
incident.

“Employees there are not trained to 
recognize when someone’s having a mental health issue,” Pat Brueggemann 
said. “Because if you saw that video, you would clearly see that his 
behavior was manic after six days of normalcy. I mean, he did things 
like jumping over a desk and trying to get out of the area he was in. 
And of course the skull fracture, how he just threw himself right on the
 floor.”

He spent the next seven days alone in
 a disciplinary pod. On Aug. 24, he told the detention officer that he 
didn’t feel well, and was left alone for the next five hours. He was 
found motionless a little after noon and confirmed dead shortly after.

Schechter said the jail policy is to 
check in on inmates every one to two hours, but the worker shortages 
made it difficult to fulfill this policy.

“With staffing shortages, it does make it hard sometimes to hit every mark with the rounds,” Schechter said.

Pat Brueggemann said she didn’t 
believe her son was getting the right treatment, or any mental health 
help. She said she was given conflicting reports of which medication he 
was taking while in jail, especially since he had a seizure within the 
first three days of incarceration. She said that hadn’t happened since 
he started anti-seizure medication years ago.

The first report she received from 
the KBI had all of his medications listed, which included Xanax, Zoloft,
 anti-seizure medication, pain relievers and blood clot medication. She 
then received a second report saying he was only taking three 
medications, generic Depakote, magnesium sulfate and acetaminophen.

Schechter said he couldn’t release confidential medical information on Joseph’s medication or head injury.

“He had been on Xanax and Seroquel 
for many years to help control his mental health issues and he was not 
given those in jail. And there’s no way that he would not tell them that
 he needed those meds because he did,” Pat Brueggemann said.

She said she never got an explanation
 of why the reports had conflicting data. She is trying to get an 
attorney in order to obtain her son’s medical records.

“There’s obviously lack of care, lack
 of education, lack of training, and somebody needs to look into it,” 
Pat Brueggemann said. “Inmates are people too. One of them was my son.”

Schechter said mental health 
treatment is difficult to address, with limited resources and an 
estimated 30-35% of inmates having serious mental health problems.

“We
 struggle with mental health care in the jail for a lot of reasons,” 
Schechter said. “The first reason is we’re not a treatment facility. 
We’re not built to be a treatment facility. We do the best we can to 
provide resources and help and programming for mental health inmates. 
The next problem we run into is that we can’t force inmates to take 
medication.”

Schechter said around 70 to 80 people
 are booked into the jail daily, with each person given a full medical 
assessment or mental health assessment, detox assessment and suicide 
risk assessment within four hours. The jail currently has around 1,400 
inmates. The jail’s capacity is 1,500 inmates.&nbsp;

He said there were sometimes issues 
with getting incarcerated people their medication because the jail 
needed medical records, doctors or pharmacy information to confirm which
 medications an inmate should receive.

“It makes it difficult that the 
inmate can’t tell us which pharmacy to fax a release to or which 
doctor’s office to contact or confirm things. It just makes things 
difficult, which can cause delays in that,” Schechter said.

Pat Brueggemann said the system needed to be changed.

“I’ll never get over this,” she said.
 “There will never be a totally happy day in my life ever again. I just 
want somebody to do something before they have another jail death. It’s 
not right. Something’s not right.”

Mother of Sedgwick Co. inmate calls for change after son’s death

NEW YORK (AP) — With time running out before the election, President Joe Biden highlighted his administration's push to crack down on so-called junk fees that banks and other companies charge their customers. The announcement comes after months of high inflation have eaten away at Americans' savings and made the economy the top issue for voters.

Biden was joined by Rohit Chopra, the director of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, the nation's financial watchdog agency created after the Great Recession. The bureau is targeting overdraft fees charged by banks as well as bad check fees, which are levied against a bank customer when a check isn't valid.

The bureau's guidance would make it illegal for banks to charge an overdraft fee on a transaction when a customer's account shows a positive balance at the time of a purchase, or when they withdraw money from their account.

Prior to the pandemic, banks collectively charged their customers roughly $15 billion in overdraft and bounced check fees, according to a bureau estimate. The bureau estimates that its new enforcement push on junk fees will save Americans roughly $3 billion in fees annually.

“These steps will immediately start saving Americans collectively billions of dollars in fees,” Biden said.

Just days away from the midterm elections, Biden is using public events to show how his administration is trying to reduce costs for families. That push comes as high inflation -- averaging 8.2% over the past year -- has been a drag on the president’s approval rating and put Democrats at a disadvantage with voters.

Back in 2021 as the economy emerged from the pandemic, Biden tried to minimize the risks of lasting inflation. But continued pandemic shutdowns and Russia’s invasion of Ukraine have pushed up prices globally, a challenge that the U.S. is primarily trying to address by having the Federal Reserve raise interest rates.

Banks have long been criticized for the high fees they charge customers when their accounts go temporarily negative. Relenting after years of public pressure, banks have reined in their overdraft fee practices. Most notably, Bank of America reduced its overdraft fee from $35 to $10. The banking industry responded that it was taking steps to reduce fees on customers before the White House stepped in.

“These changes were made without regulatory or legislative intervention," said Lindsey Johnson, president and CEO of the Consumer Bankers Association, the trade and lobby group for the nation's biggest retail banks like Wells Fargo and Bank of America.

The CFPB is also targeting bounced check fees, which occur less frequently nowadays because Americans have largely moved away from writing paper checks and largely use peer-to-peer payment platforms like Zelle, Venmo, PayPal and CashApp. These fees are typically between $10 and $19, according to the bureau, and are charged to the customer depositing the check.

“Charging a fee to the depositor penalizes the person who could not anticipate the check would bounce, while doing nothing to deter the originator from writing bad checks,” the bureau said in a statement.

The bureau did not have an estimate of how much Americans pay in bad check fees, because banks do not publicly disclose those figures in regulatory filings.

Biden also highlighted a number of other fees the administration plans to go after, which include resort fees, processing fees for concert tickets, and various fees charged by airlines.

“We’re just getting started,” Biden said.

The White House's push is also a public display of support for the CFPB days after the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals ruled that the way the bureau is funded is unconstitutional. The conservative-leaning court ruled that because the CFPB receives its funding from the Federal Reserve and not through Congressional appropriations, the way the bureau writes its rules and regulations is unconstitutional.

The court case, which could wind up in the Supreme Court, is the latest in a long list of conservative and Republican challenges to the bureau's structure. Within hours, Republicans attacked the bureau's announcement.

“It’s no surprise that an out-of-control and unaccountable agency — which the Fifth Circuit recently ruled is unconstitutional — has chosen to sidestep the congressionally mandated rulemaking process to change the rules of the road,” said Sen. Pat Toomey, R-Pennsylvania and the top Republican on the Senate Banking Committee, in a statement.

With Americans feeling pinched, Biden targets 'junk fees'

KANSAS CITY – A man was sentenced in federal court Tuesday for robbing a bank within a month of being released from federal prison for another bank robbery, according to the United State's Attorney.

Charles Edgar King Jr., 58, was sentenced by U.S. District Judge Brian C. Wimes to five years and 11 months in federal prison without parole.

On May 31, 2022, King pleaded guilty to one count of bank robbery. King admitted that he used a note to steal $8,815 from Guaranty Bank, 2109 N. Glenstone Ave., in Springfield, on July 10, 2021. King entered the bank at about 10:30 a.m. and went straight to a teller counter, where he handed the teller a handwritten note that read, “I have a gun this is a robbery.” The teller handed over cash and King left the bank and walked away through a parking lot.

Surveillance cameras in the bank captured good quality video, which show King, who was not wearing a mask, and images of his bare hands that show a tattoo of a cross on the back of his right middle finger. On the same day as the robbery, July 10, 2021, the FBI released one of the surveillance images to the media and requested assistance from the public in identifying the bank robber. King’s former probation officer saw the media coverage and contacted the FBI the same day and identified King.

King had been released from federal prison 30 days prior to robbing Guaranty Bank. King was convicted of robbing Citizen’s Bank in Rogersville, Mo., in 2012 and sentenced to seven years in federal prison without parole. He served an additional 14 months for repeatedly violating the terms of his supervised release following incarceration, according to court documents, for a total prison term of nine years and two months. King, who was released with no further supervision, had been out of custody for 30 days when he committed the Guaranty Bank robbery.

On July 19, 2021, an anonymous source contacted law enforcement with a tip that King was staying at the Springfield Inn near Kearney and North Glenstone in Springfield. Springfield police detectives and FBI agents conducted surveillance on the hotel and saw King leave the hotel driving a purple Scion Cube with no license plate. Springfield police officers conducted a car stop and detained King on an investigative arrest for robbery.

King told an FBI agent that he used the stolen money to buy the used Scion Cube for $2,400, and that he gave some of the money away and spent the rest.

Man sentenced for bank robbery days after release from prison for bank robbery

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — An intruder attacked and severely beat House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's husband with a hammer in the couple's San Francisco home early Friday while searching for the Democratic leader and chillingly shouting: “Where is Nancy, where is Nancy?”&nbsp;

Members of the Kansas and Missouri congressional delegation and others are sharing their thoughts on the attack.

Police were called to the home to check on&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/hub/paul-pelosi">Paul Pelosi</a>&nbsp;at about 2:30 a.m. when they discovered the 82-year-old and the suspect, 42-year-old David Depape, both grabbing onto the hammer, said Police Chief William Scott. The intruder yanked it from Pelosi and began beating him before being subdued and arrested by officers.

The speaker was in Washington, where she had been scheduled to appear with Vice President Kamala Harris at a fundraising event Saturday night for the LGBTQ group Human Rights Campaign, 11 days before congressional elections that have been filled with harsh, sometimes violent rhetoric. Pelosi canceled her appearance.

The intruder's shouts in Pelosi's California home were an unsettling echo of the chants during&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/hub/capitol-siege">the Jan. 6, 2021, insurrection at the Capitol</a>, when rioters trying to stop Joe Biden’s election searched menacingly through the halls for the speaker. Police said a motive for Friday's intrusion was still being determined, but three people with knowledge of the investigation told The Associated Press that Depape targeted Pelosi's home. Those people were not authorized to talk publicly about an ongoing probe and spoke on condition of anonymity.

Police gave few details on the suspect or his motives. But the attack raised questions about the safety of members of Congress and their families. Threats to lawmakers are at an all-time high almost two years after the Capitol insurrection. In the current midterm election campaigns, crime and public safety have emerged as top concerns among Americans.

Paul Pelosi was severely beaten, suffering blunt force trauma after he was struck several times in the head. He was admitted to Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital for his injuries, the hospital confirmed. His condition was not immediately available, but Pelosi's spokesman has said he would recover.

Lawmakers from both parties reacted with shock and expressed their well wishes to the Pelosi family.

“What happened to Paul Pelosi was a dastardly act,” said Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y. “I spoke with Speaker Pelosi earlier this morning and conveyed my deepest concern and heartfelt wishes to her husband and their family, and I wish him a speedy recovery.”

Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell said on Twitter, “Horrified and disgusted by the reports that Paul Pelosi was assaulted in his and Speaker Pelosi’s home last night. Grateful to hear that Paul is on track to make a full recovery and that law enforcement including our stellar Capitol Police are on the case.”

In 2021, Capitol Police investigated around 9,600 threats made against members of Congress, and several members have been physically attacked in recent years. Former Rep. Gabrielle Giffords, D-Ariz., was shot in the head at an event outside a Tucson grocery store in 2011, and Rep. Steve Scalise, R-La., was severely injured when a gunman opened fire on a Republican congressional baseball team practice in 2017.

Members of Congress have received additional dollars for security at their homes, but some have pushed for yet more protection as people have shown up at their homes and as members have received an increasing number of threatening communications. Nancy Pelosi, who is second in line of succession to the president, has a protective detail that was in Washington with her. She’d just returned this week from a security conference in Europe.

Often at Nancy Pelosi’s side during formal events in Washington, Paul Pelosi is a wealthy investor who largely remains on the West Coast. The couple have five adult children and many grandchildren. They have been married 59 years.

Earlier this year, Paul Pelosi pleaded guilty to misdemeanor driving under the influence charges related to a May crash in California’s wine country and was&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/california-san-francisco-nancy-pelosi-sentencing-napa-e98c47d5c47fa273cf2d65bf5c85124f">sentenced to five days in jail and three years of probation</a>.

The Pelosi home in the wealthy Pacific Heights neighborhood has been the scene of several protests in the past few years. After Nancy Pelosi was seen on video getting her hair done at a salon while many were shut down during the coronavirus pandemic, stylists protested outside with curling irons. Members of the Chinese community protested outside recently before Pelosi’s trip to Taiwan.

And during debates over the federal stimulus package protesters scrawled anarchy signs in black paint across the garage door, along with “cancel rent,” and “we want everything.” They left a pig’s head on the driveway.

Meanwhile, wishes of support and concern poured in.

“We have been to many events with the Pelosis over the last 2 decades and we’ve had lots of occasions to talk about both of our families and the challenges of being part of a political family. Thinking about the Pelosi family today," tweeted Sen. Roy Blunt, R-Mo.

White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said that President Biden had also been in contact with Nancy Pelosi.

“The president is praying for Paul Pelosi and for Speaker Pelosi’s whole family,” Jean-Pierre said. “This morning he called Speaker Pelosi to express his support after this horrible attack. He is also very glad that a full recovery is expected. The president continues to condemn all violence, and asks that the family’s desire for privacy be respected.”

At the Capitol, Democratic Sen. Pat Leahy of Vermont, the Senate president who is third in the presidential line of succession, said he had known Paul Pelosi “forever.” He said, “It’s just horrible.”

TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) — A northeastern Kansas man is facing a felony charge of threatening to kill one of the state's congressmen. But his trial has been postponed indefinitely so that a federal judge can decide whether he is too mentally ill to help his lawyers or follow what's going on in court.

Federal prosecutors contend in court documents that Chase Neill, 31, from Lawrence, developed a fixation on Republican Rep. Jake LaTurner, who represents an eastern Kansas district. A hearing is scheduled in the case for Nov. 8, Election Day. Neill's trial initially was set to start in September, but U.S. District Judge Holly Teeter granted a request from both sides to have Neill's mental health examined.

“There is reasonable cause to believe that Mr. Neill has a mental disease and that the mental disease renders him unable to assist properly in his defense,” Teeter wrote in her two-page order.

LaTurner was a Kansas state senator and state treasurer before winning his U.S. House seat in 2020.

"Rep. LaTurner’s office will continue to cooperate with local and federal law enforcement on this matter,” spokesperson Mike Howard said in an email.

One pretrial report on Neill said he believes he is “the Messiah,” and prosecutors have said in court documents that he believes he was “obligated by God” to warn “certain public figures” and detail the results of not heeding his warnings.

U.S. Magistrate Rachel Schwartz cited the pretrial report in refusing a request from Neill in August to be released from custody. She said in her order that he had $150,000 in student loan debt but no income.

Schwartz said in her order that Neill suffered a head injury four or five years ago, “characterized as a head fracture.”

The pretrial report said that in March 2018, Lawrence police had reports that Neill, who was living with his mother there, was delusional and paranoid and accused one officer of trying to steal his “unicorn business idea.” Neill was sentenced to six months in jail in February 2019 on a domestic battery charge, the report said.

Man prosecuted for death threat against Kansas Rep. LaTurner

SEDGWICK COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities investigating a fatal shooting and have arrested a suspect a second time in connection with the crime.

On April 24, sheriff's deputies were sent to a check shots call at the Englewood mobile home park located at 3201 E MacArthur in Wichita, according to Sheriff's Lt. Benjamin Blick.

While responding, deputies received information that a man and woman were inside the residence with apparent gunshot wounds.

When deputies arrived, they had to force entry to the home. Inside the home, they located 42-year-old Nathan Brock and 41-year-old Trisha Benjamin deceased, according to Blick.

On April 26,&nbsp;Sedgwick County Sheriff’s detectives arrested and booked 32-year-old Steven L. Fessenden of Wichita for the murder. He was not charged in the crime.

On Thursday, sheriff’s deputies arrested Fessenden a second time in connection to the deaths He is being held on requested charges of Murder in the First Degree, One count of Murder in the Second Degree and&nbsp;One count of Criminal use of Weapons. Kansas man arrested a 2nd time for double murder

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Former Kansas City Chiefs assistant coach Britt Reid sentencing scheduled for Friday was delayed to Tuesday afternoon November 1, according to Jackson County officials.

He pleaded guilty in September to&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/nfl-kansas-football-kansas-city-kansas-city-chiefs-d43b085c56ac1d0ec8445f30faa6a4d0">felony driving while intoxicated</a>&nbsp;resulting in serious physical injury stemming from a 2021 crash, which occurred when his pickup truck struck two stopped cars on an interstate entrance ramp and seriously injured a 5-year-old girl.

Reid, the 37-year-old son of Chiefs coach Andy Reid, had been scheduled to go to trial on Sept. 26. He had faced up to seven years in prison, but the plea deal means he now faces a possible sentence ranging from probation to four years in prison.&nbsp;

Investigators said Reid was intoxicated and driving about 84 mph&nbsp; when his Dodge truck hit the cars on an entrance ramp to Interstate 435 near Arrowhead Stadium on Feb. 4, 2021.

A girl inside one of the cars, Ariel Young, suffered a traumatic brain injury. Six people, including Reid, were injured in the crash.

In court, Reid acknowledged he was drinking on the night of the crash.

“I really regret what I did,” Reid said. “I made a huge mistake. I apologize to the family. I didn't mean to hurt anyone.”

Tom Pardo, an attorney representing Ariel's family, said they opposed the plea deal.

“The five victims of this crime are outraged,” Pardo said. “The prosecuting attorney is not seeking maximum sentence allowable by law. The defendant is a prior offender whose actions caused a 5-year-old girl to be in a coma and seriously injured three others.”

A Kansas City police officer who arrived at the scene of the crash reported he could smell alcohol and that Reid’s eyes were bloodshot, according to court documents. Reid had a blood-alcohol level of 0.113 two hours after the crash, police said. The legal limit is 0.08.

One of the vehicles he hit had stalled because of a dead battery and the second was owned by Ariel’s mother, who had arrived to help.

The Chiefs reached a&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/nfl-sports-health-business-football-b79b53869eb2a017e1e41623ac5abb58">confidential agreement</a>&nbsp;with Ariel's family in November to pay for her ongoing medical treatment and other expenses.

Reid underwent emergency surgery for a groin injury after the crash. The Chiefs placed Reid on administrative leave and his job with the team ended after his contract was allowed to expire.

This is not the first legal issue for Reid, who graduated from a drug treatment program in Pennsylvania in 2009 after a series of run-ins with law enforcement. His father was coach of the Philadelphia Eagles at the time.

Britt Reid's older brother, Garrett, served a two-year sentence in a Pennsylvania state drug program after he was arrested on drug-related charges. Prison or probation: Sentencing for ex-Chiefs assistant delayed 

WASHINGTON (AP) — The intruder who attacked House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's husband in their San Francisco home was searching for the Democratic leader, shouting "Where is Nancy, where is Nancy?" before assaulting Paul Pelosi with a hammer.

Those shouts were a chilling echo of the chants during the Jan. 6, 2021, insurrection at the Capitol, when rioters trying to stop Joe Biden's election searched menacingly through the halls for the speaker.<a href="https://apnews.com/hub/paul-pelosi"> Paul Pelosi</a>&nbsp;was attacked and severely beaten by an assailant who broke into the Pelosi home early Friday, police said. The intruder confronted him shouting for the speaker's whereabouts, according to another person briefed on the situation.

“The motive for this attack is still being determined,” said San Francisco Police Chief William Scott at a press briefing.

The suspect was identified as David Depape, Scott said. He was in custody.

“Our officers observed Mr. Pelosi and the suspect both holding a hammer," Scott said. "The suspect pulled the hammer away from Mr. Pelosi and violently assaulted him with it. Our officers immediately tackled the suspect, disarmed him, took him into custody, requested emergency backup and rendered medical aid.”

Scott said Depape was being charged with attempted homicide, assault with a deadly weapon, elder abuse aand other charges.

The 42-year-old man broke into House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s San Francisco home early Thursday, attacking the speaker’s husband with a hammer just as police officials responded to the home.

Police responded to the 2:27 a.m. call. Both men were holding the hammer, he said.

The 82 year-old suffered blunt force injuries to his head and body, according to two people who spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity to discuss the ongoing probe. He was admitted to Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital for his injuries, the hospital confirmed. His condition was not immediately available.

Paul Pelosi was being treated by doctors for bruising, severe swelling and other injuries.

While the circumstances of the attack were unclear, the attack raised questions about the safety of members of Congress and their families. Threats to lawmakers are at an all-time high almost two years after&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/hub/capitol-siege">the Capitol insurrection</a>. The attack also came just 11 days ahead of midterm elections in which crime and public safety have emerged as top concerns among Americans.

In 2021, Capitol Police investigated around 9,600 threats made against members of Congress, and members have been physically attacked in recent years. Former Rep. Gabrielle Giffords, D-Ariz., was shot in the head at an event outside a Tucson grocery store in 2011, and Rep. Steve Scalise, R-La., was severely injured when a gunman opened fire on a Republican congressional baseball team practice in 2017.

Members of Congress have received additional dollars for security at their homes, but some have pushed for yet more protection as people have shown up at their homes and as members have received an increasing number of threatening communications.

Capitol Police, tasked with protecting congressional leaders, said Nancy Pelosi was with her protective detail in Washington at the time her husband was attacked.

Speaker Pelosi, who is second in the line of succession to the president, had just returned this week from a security conference in Europe and is due to keynote an advocacy event Saturday evening in Washington with Vice President Kamala Harris.

Capitol Police said the FBI and San Francisco police were also investigating. The suspect was in the custody of the San Francisco police.

Often at Nancy Pelosi’s side during formal events in Washington, Paul Pelosi is a wealthy investor who largely remains on the West Coast. They have five adult children and many grandchildren. The two have been married 59 years.

President Joe Biden and lawmakers from both parties reacted to the assault with shock and expressed their well wishes to the Pelosi family.

“What happened to Paul Pelosi was a dastardly act," said Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y. “I spoke with Speaker Pelosi earlier this morning and conveyed my deepest concern and heartfelt wishes to her husband and their family, and I wish him a speedy recovery.”

WASHINGTON (AP) —&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/hub/paul-pelosi">Paul Pelosi</a>, the husband of&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/hub/nancy-pelosi">House Speaker Nancy Pelosi</a>, was attacked and severely beaten by an assailant with a hammer who broke into their San Francisco home early Friday, according to people familiar with the investigation.

Pelosi, 82, suffered blunt force injuries to his head and body, according to two people who spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity to discuss the ongoing probe.

The attack was not random; the assailant specifically targeted the home, the people said. The assailant was in custody.

While the circumstances of the attack are unclear, the attack raises questions about the safety of members of Congress and their families as threats to lawmakers are at an all-time high almost two years after&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/hub/capitol-siege">the deadly Capitol insurrection</a>. The attack also comes just 11 days ahead of midterm elections in which crime and public safety have emerged as top concerns among Americans.

Capitol Police, tasked with protecting congressional leaders, said Nancy Pelosi was with her protective detail in Washington at the time her husband was attacked. She'd just returned this week from a security conference in Europe and is due to keynote an advocacy event Saturday evening with Vice President Kamala Harris.

The Pelosi home in the wealthy Pacific Heights neighborhood has been the scene of several protests in the past few years. After Nancy Pelosi was seen on video getting her hair done at a salon while many were shut down during the coronavirus pandemic, stylists protested outside with curling irons. Members of the Chinese community protested outside recently before Pelosi’s trip to Taiwan. And during during debates over the federal stimulus package protesters scrawled anarchy signs in black paint across the garage door, along with “cancel rent,” and “we want everything.”

WASHINGTON (AP) — House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s husband, Paul, was “violently assaulted” by an assailant who broke into their San Francisco home early Friday, and he is now in the hospital and expected to make a full recovery, said her spokesman, Drew Hammill.

Pelosi was not in the residence at the time. Hammill said the assailant is in custody and the motivation for the attack is under investigation.

Pelosi just returned to Washington this week from a security conference in Europe and is due to keynote an advocacy event Saturday evening with Vice President Kamala Harris.

While the circumstances of the attack are unclear, the incident raises additional questions about the safety of members of Congress and their families as threats to lawmakers are at an all-time high almost two years after the violent Capitol insurrection.

Members of Congress have received additional dollars for security at their homes, but some have pushed for more protection as people have showed up at their homes and as members have received an increasing amount of threatening communications.

LOUIS (AP) — The 19-year-old gunman who forced his way into a St. Louis school and killed two people purchased the&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/crime-shootings-school-st-louis-00bda97835851e40fd9654a80987b36d">AR-15-style rifle</a>&nbsp;from a private seller after an FBI background check stopped him from buying a weapon from a licensed dealer, police said Thursday.

Orlando Harris tried to buy a firearm from a licensed dealer in nearby St. Charles, Missouri, on Oct. 8, St. Louis police said in a news release Thursday evening. An FBI background check “successfully blocked this sale,” police said, though they didn't say why the sale was blocked. A message seeking comment wasn't immediately returned.

Harris then bought the rifle used in the&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/st-louis-shootings-crime-5aa844c9d070bb4e6fc64151da76d6a4">school shooting on Monday at Central Visual and Performing Arts High School</a>&nbsp;from a private seller who had purchased it legally in 2020, police said.

They also monitored his mail and often checked his room to make sure he did not have a weapon.In a note left behind, Harris lamented that he had no friends, no family, no girlfriend and a life of isolation. His note called it the “perfect storm for a mass shooter.”“Mental health is a difficult thing,” Sack said. “It’s hard to tell when somebody is going to be violent and act out, or if they’re just struggling, they’re depressed, and they might self-harm.”Central Visual and Performing Arts shares a building with another magnet school, Collegiate School of Medicine and Bioscience, which also was evacuated as the shooting unfolded. Central has 383 students, Collegiate 336.The building was locked Monday morning and an unarmed security guard saw Harris trying to get in. Sack has declined to say how Harris forced his way inside.Officers, some of whom were off-duty, arrived four minutes after the 911 call. Amid the chaos of students, teachers and staff fleeing, officers asked some of them where the gunman was. Eight minutes after arriving, officers located Harris on the third floor, barricaded in a classroom. Police said that when Harris shot at officers, they shot back and broke through the door.The St. Louis shooting was the first school shooting to involve multiple deaths since a&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/hub/uvalde-school-shooting">gunman killed 19 children and two teachers at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas</a>, in May, according to a list of shootings compiled by Education Week.
