KINGMAN COUNTY — Authorities are working to determine the cause of an apartment complex fire in Kingman.

Just before 8:30 a.m. Saturday, fire crews responded to the Eagle Acres apartment complex, 501 N. Thompson Street in Kingman, according to a media release.

EMS transported one person to a local hospital for treatment.

The American Red Cross and other local organizations are on hand to assist displaced residents.

The Kingman Fire Department, Kingman Police Department, Kingman County Sheriff’s Office, Kingman EMS, Norwich Fire Department, Cheney Fire Department, Cunningham Fire Department, Kingman Health Department, Kingman Emergency Management, Pratt Emergency Management, and Rice County Emergency Management all responded to the fire to assist.

Simply&nbsp;giving&nbsp;kids money is a sure way to plant the seeds of entitlement in a young mind. You don’t want your kids growing up with the idea they deserve money simply because they’re alive. Of course, there are things kids should be expected to do without pay, too. When you’re part of a family, everyone needs to understand they have a responsibility to pitch in and help out sometimes!

HUTCHINSON — The Kansas State Fair Board heard a presentation from Tom Thebault with North American Midway Entertainment Saturday morning.&nbsp;

"We were like $9000 off from last year's Friday, but certainly up from 2019," Thebault said. "We hit the million dollar mark and we've got two days to go."

Thebault always supplements his traveling crew with local people, but said he probably didn't hire enough. He also said the traveling crew is really top notch this year.

"They do a great job representing us on the rides," Thebault said. "They also do a great job getting us moved. Some years, that doesn't happen so well."

There are two income thresholds where the company gives money back to the board for improvements in that area of the fairgrounds. They are at $1 million and $1.5 million in sales. The carnival set a record in 2021 at $1.7 million.&nbsp;

"I like what you are doing with the new blacktop surface," Thebault said. "It looks great, you know?"

He'd like to see work continue on that, if possible. The board also said earlier this week that they'd like to work on getting additional shade available on the midway in future years.

SEDGWICK COUNY—One person died in an accident just after 3:30a.m. Friday in Sedgwick County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2011 Chevy Malibu driven by&nbsp; Shanlie Tatyana&nbsp;Smiley, 28, Wichita, was northbound on Interstate 135 at 45th Street.

 The vehicle left the roadway on the right, bounced off the guardrail, traveled back across the interstate, left the roadway on the left and struck a cement bridge pillar in the center median. 

The vehicle came to rest in the center median. The driver was not wearing a seatbelt. Airbags deployed and the driver was trapped in the vehicle.&nbsp;

Smiley was pronounced dead at the scene and transported to Sedgwick County Forensics Science Center.&nbsp;

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported the vehicle was&nbsp;northbound on Interstate 135 at 45th Street.

The vehicle came to rest in the center median. The driver was not wearing a seatbelt. Airbags deployed and the driver was trapped in the vehicle. The accident remains under investigation. 

Early Saturday the KHP still had not released the name of the driver or additional details.

KANSAS CITY (AP) —The ride-hailing service Uber said Friday that all its services were operational following what security professionals are calling a major data breach, claiming there was no evidence the hacker got access to sensitive user data.

But the breach, apparently by a lone hacker, put the spotlight on an increasingly effective break-in routine involving social engineering: The hacker apparently gained access posing as a colleague, tricking an Uber employee into surrendering their credentials.

They were then able to locate passwords on the network that got them the level of privileged access reserved for system administrators.

The potential damage was serious: Screenshots the hacker shared with security researchers indicate they obtained full access to the cloud-based systems where Uber stores sensitive customer and financial data.

It is not known how much data the hacker stole or how long they were inside Uber's network. Two researchers who communicated directly with the person — who self-identified as an 18-year-old to one of them — said they appeared interested in publicity. There was no indication they destroyed data.

But files shared with the researchers and posted widely on Twitter and other social media indicated the hacker was able to access Uber's most crucial internal systems.

“It was really bad the access he had. It's awful,” said Corben Leo, one of the researchers who chatted with the hacker online.

The cybersecurity community's online reaction — Uber also suffered a serious 2016 breach — was harsh.

The hack “wasn’t sophisticated or complicated and clearly hinged on multiple big systemic security culture and engineering failures,”&nbsp;<a href="https://twitter.com/hacks4pancakes/status/1570811890305236992?s=21&amp;t=CJgVgBWK99Zry08kKvWKNg">tweeted Lesley Carhart,</a>&nbsp;incident response director of Dragos Inc., which specializes in an industrial-control systems.

Leo said screenshots the hacker shared showed the intruder got access to systems stored on Amazon and Google cloud-based servers where Uber keeps source code, financial data and customer data such as driver's licenses.

“If he had keys to the kingdom he could start stopping services. He could delete stuff. He could download customer data, change people’s passwords,” said Leo, a researcher and head of business development at the security company Zellic.

Screenshots the hacker shared — many of which found their way online — showed sensitive financial data and internal databases accessed. Also widely circulating online: The hacker announcing the breach Thursday on Uber's internal Slack collaboration system.

Leo, along with Sam Curry, an engineer with Yuga Labs who also communicated with the hacker, said there was no indication that the hacker had done any damage or was interested in anything more than publicity.

“It’s pretty clear he’s a young hacker because he wants what 99% of what young hackers want, which is fame,” Leo said.

Curry said he spoke to several Uber employees Thursday who said they were “working to lock down everything internally” to restrict the hacker’s access. That included the San Francisco company’s Slack network, he said.

<a href="https://www.uber.com/newsroom/security-update/">In a statement posted online Friday,</a>&nbsp;Uber said “internal software tools that we took down as a precaution yesterday are coming back online.”

It said all its services — including Uber Eats and Uber Freight — were operational and that it had notified law enforcement. The FBI said via email that it is "aware of the cyber incident involving Uber, and our assistance to the company is ongoing.”

Uber said there was no evidence that the intruder accessed “sensitive user data” such as trip history but did not respond to questions from The Associated Press including about whether data was stored encrypted.

Curry and Leo said the hacker did not indicate how much data was copied. Uber did not recommend any specific actions for its users, such as changing passwords.

The hacker alerted the researchers to the intrusion Thursday by using an internal Uber account on the company’s network&nbsp;<a href="https://twitter.com/samwcyo/status/1570577801790783493?">used to post vulnerabilities identified through its bug-bounty program,</a>&nbsp;which pays ethical hackers to ferret out network weaknesses.

After commenting on those posts, the hacker provided a Telegram account address. Curry and other researchers then engaged them in a separate conversation, where the intruder provided the screenshots as proof.

The AP attempted to contact the hacker at the Telegram account, but received no response.

Screenshots posted online appeared to confirm what the researchers said the hacker claimed: That they obtained privileged access to Uber’s most critical systems through social engineering.

The hacker first obtained the password of an Uber employee, likely through phishing. The hacker then bombarded the employee with push notifications asking they confirm a remote log-in to their account. When the employee did not respond, the hacker reached out via WhatsApp, posing as a fellow worker from the IT department and expressing urgency. Ultimately, the employee caved and confirmed with a mouse click.

Social engineering is a popular hacking strategy, as humans tend to be the weakest link in any network. Teenagers used it in 2020 to hack Twitter and it has more recently been used in hacks of the tech companies Twilio and Cloudflare, said Rachel Tobac, CEO of SocialProof Security, which specializes in training workers not to fall victim to social engineering.

“The hard truth is that most orgs in the world could be hacked in the exact way Uber was just hacked,” Tobac tweeted. In an interview, she said “even super tech savvy people fall for social engineering methods every day.”

“Attackers are getting better at by-passing or hi-jacking MFA (multi-factor authentication),” said Ryan Sherstobitoff, a senior threat analyst at SecurityScorecard.

That's why many security professionals advocate the use of so-called FIDO physical security keys for user authentication. Adoption of such hardware has been spotty among tech companies, however.

The hack also highlighted the need for real-time monitoring in cloud-based systems to better detect intruders, said Tom Kellermann of Contrast Security. “Much more attention must be paid to protecting clouds from within” because a single master key can typically unlock all their doors.

Some experts questioned how much cybersecurity has improved at Uber&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/north-america-hacking-ap-top-news-dara-khosrowshahi-ca-state-wire-7da55d8ee5b04db8835d9abd71976349">since it was hacked in 2016.</a>

Its former chief security officer, Joseph Sullivan, is currently on trial for allegedly arranging to pay hackers $100,000 to cover up that high-tech heist, when the personal information of about 57 million customers and drivers was stolen.

Our two smallest debts, a credit card and a truck we financed, are both $4,500 right now, and we have a combined income of about $95,000 a year. GRANT COUNTY– A Kansas man has been sentenced to 16 years in prison on five charges for crimes committed in 2018 with a deadly weapon, according to Kansas Attorney General Derek Schmidt.

Francisco Beltran, 30, of Ulysses, was sentenced this week in Grant County District Court by Judge Clinton Peterson on one count each of robbery, aggravated assault, criminal possession of a firearm, conspiracy to commit aggravated robbery and contributing to a child’s misconduct. 

Beltran was sentenced to 192 months in a Kansas Department of Corrections facility and will be required to register as a violent as a violent offender for 15 years upon his release.

The case was investigated by the Kansas Bureau of Investigation and the Ulysses Police Department. The crimes occurred on or about August 18, 2018.

In August of 2021, Beltran escaped from the Grant County Jail. He was captured a few days later.

Beltran has three previous convictions for burglary, for theft and aggravated battery, according to the Kansas Department of Corrections.&nbsp;

 </figure>GRANT COUNTY– A Kansas man has been sentenced to 16 years in prison on five charges for crimes committed in 2018 with a deadly weapon, according to Kansas Attorney General Derek Schmidt.Francisco Beltran, 30, of Ulysses, was sentenced this week in Grant County District Court by Judge Clinton Peterson on one count each of robbery, aggravated assault, criminal possession of a firearm, conspiracy to commit aggravated robbery and contributing to a child’s misconduct. Beltran was sentenced to 192 months in a Kansas Department of Corrections facility and will be required to register as a violent as a violent offender for 15 years upon his release.The case was investigated by the Kansas Bureau of Investigation and the Ulysses Police Department. The crimes occurred on or about August 18, 2018.In August of 2021, Beltran escaped from the Grant County Jail. TOPEKA&nbsp;–&nbsp;During a state visit from a Taiwanese delegation, officials from the east Asian country agreed to purchase 66 million bushels of wheat from U.S. farmers over the next two years. The grain deal, which is worth approximately $576 million, will be fulfilled significantly by Kansas wheat farms.&nbsp;

The Kansas Departments of Agriculture and Commerce jointly hosted a Taiwanese Wheat Procurement Signing Ceremony at the Kansas Capitol today as part of the current Taiwan Agricultural Trade Goodwill Mission. Representatives from the&nbsp;Taiwan Flour Mills Association (TFMA) and Taipei Economic &amp; Cultural Office (TECO) were included in the event.&nbsp;

“Through strong partners like Taiwan, Kansas is indeed feeding the world,”&nbsp;Governor Laura Kelly said.&nbsp;“Last year, Kansas’ agriculture exports surpassed $5 billion for the first time in history. Our farmers, ranchers and producers are contributing mightily to the state economy – and solidifying our status as a global powerhouse in agriculture.”&nbsp;

Since 1998, Taiwan has dispatched a total of 13 agricultural trade missions to the U.S. in an effort to strengthen trade relations. This year’s mission included a to visit Washington, D.C. and select agricultural states, including Kansas, to demonstrate Taiwan’s intention to continue purchasing quality wheat from the United States.&nbsp;&nbsp;

“We are sincerely grateful for our continued partnership with the Taiwanese people and their commitment to purchase wheat from Kansas,”&nbsp;Lieutenant Governor and Secretary of Commerce David Toland said. “Taiwan continues to be a significant partner in many of our export markets, including wheat, soybeans, aircraft and aerospace components, to name a few. We value our relationship and will continue to pursue even more mutually beneficial opportunities moving forward.”&nbsp;

The TFMA and the Kansas Wheat Commission signed a joint letter of intent this morning related to Taiwan’s purchase of 66 million bushels of wheat in 2023 and 2024. While a significant portion of this commitment will be from Kansas farmers, the terms, quantities, prices and conditions for the purchase and sale of wheat will be negotiated privately between the individual importers and suppliers.&nbsp;

In 2021, Taiwan was the fifth largest export market for Kansas agricultural commodities – with the procurement of more than $224 million of Kansas agricultural goods including beef, oilseeds, cereal grains and wheat flour.&nbsp;&nbsp;

“Kansas values its economic and agricultural trade relations with Taiwan. This goodwill mission showcases the close relationship that has developed between Kansas and Taiwan over decades of agricultural trade,”&nbsp;Secretary of Agriculture Mike Beam said. “We give heartfelt thanks to the representatives from TECO and the Taiwan Agricultural Trade Goodwill Mission for spending time in Kansas. WASHINGTON (AP) — A grocery store in Buffalo. A nightclub in Orlando. A Walmart in El Paso: All sites of hate-fueled violence against Black, Hispanic or LGBTQ Americans over the past five years. And all somber symbols of a “through line” of hate that must be rooted out, President Joe Biden said Thursday.

The administration gathered educators, faith leaders and others who have experienced violence firsthand for a discussion on how stop the violence, and promised action.

In 2020, hate crimes in the U.S. were the highest in more than a decade, and the Justice Department has pledged to increase efforts to counter it. Now, political violence fueled by lies about the 2020 election is overlapping with hate crimes: A growing number of ardent Donald Trump supporters seem ready to strike back against the FBI or others whom they believe are going too far in investigating the former president.

Biden spoke of a hate “through-line” that, along with racism, bigotry and violence, has long plagued the nation. Hate never goes away, he said, it only hides. And it is up to everyday Americans to stop giving it any air and to stamp it out.

“All forms of hate fueled by violence have no place in America,” he said.

The president's somber, reflective tone on America's long history of hate crime was in stark contrast to his sharp-tongued speech a few weeks ago, when he rebuked Trump-supporting Republicans for proliferating falsehoods about the 2020 election that have taken root and fueled violence.

On Thursday, Biden briefly mentioned the Jan. 6, 2021 insurrection at the U.S. Capitol as a moment that didn't reflect “who we are” as a nation. And he said that hate had been given too much oxygen in politics, media and on the internet lately.

“The violence and the haters are in a minority. … Unless we speak out, it’s going to continue," he said.

Biden pointed to new federal efforts to help schools, local law enforcement agencies and cultural institutions prevent and respond to such violence. He also called on Congress to impose stronger transparency requirements on social media companies, whose platforms allow anonymous hate to proliferate hate.

Among the attendees Thursday was Susan Bro, whose daughter Heather Heyer was killed at a white nationalist rally in Charlottesville, Virginia in 2017. In remarks introducing Biden, Bro spoke about how losing her daughter was part of a bigger story.

“Her murder resonated around the world. But the hate did not begin nor end there," Bro said. "While my daughter's death received so much national and international attention, all too often these hateful attacks are committed against people of color with unacceptably little public attention.”

Other attendees included Sarah Collins Rudolph, who lost an eye and still has pieces of glass inside her body from a Ku Klux Klan bombing that killed her sister and three other Black girls at a Birmingham, Alabama, church 59 years ago. And the family of Balbir Singh Sodhi, a Sikh man from Arizona who was killed in a hate crime four days after the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks in 2001.

Law enforcement officials across the country are warning and being warned about an increase in threats and the potential for violent attacks on federal agents or buildings in the wake of the FBI’s search of Trump’s Mar-a-Lago home.

“We must stand together and we must clearly say that a harm against any one of us is a harm against all of us,” Vice President Kamala Harris said in her opening remarks Thursday. “We are at an inflection point in our history, and indeed, our democracy. Years from now, our children and our grandchildren, they're going to ask us, ‘What did you do in that moment?’”

Brandon Wolf, an LGBTQ activist, recounted from the lectern at the “United We Stand Summit” his experience being inside Pulse nightclub in 2016 in Florida when a shooter opened fire. He was in the bathroom at the time the shooting started.

“I remember panic, a sprint for the emergency exit,” he said. “I remember willing myself to put one foot in front of other, eyes locked on a sliver of light from a door left ajar.”

Wolf survived, but the shooter killed 49 people who were mostly LGBTQ and people of color. He told the crowd he knows firsthand how important it is to counter hate.

Civil rights groups in attendance said the summit was not just lip service, and they were planning for action.

“There was simply not talk and reflection today, but a commitment to action, by the government,” said Marc Morial of the National Urban League.

LONDON (AP) — Two minutes of silence will be observed Monday across the United Kingdom at the end of Queen Elizabeth II’s state funeral at Westminster Abbey, giving British public across the nation a chance to pay their respects to&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/queen-elizabeth-ii-health-update-b2578aa91c3fef9c5d6ad4a557bf63e4">the late monarch</a>.

Buckingham Palace released more details Thursday about the state funeral of&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/hub/queen-elizabeth-ii">the queen</a>&nbsp;who died Sept. 8 at 96 and her private interment later Monday. Her death at her beloved Balmoral Castle summer retreat ended the monarch’s 70-year reign.

Edward William Fitzalan-Howard, the official in charge of arrangements, said the funeral and events over coming days are intended to “unite people across the globe and resonate with people of all faiths, whilst fulfilling her majesty and her family’s wishes to pay a fitting tribute to an extraordinary reign.”

Tens of thousands were standing in a line Thursday that snaked for more than four miles along the River Thames in London, waiting to file in silence past her coffin.

“The queen held a unique and timeless position in all our lives. This has been felt more keenly over the past few days, as the world comes to terms with her demise,” Fitzalan-Howard said.

On Friday evening, King Charles III and his siblings stood vigil at their mother’s coffin for 15 minutes as it&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/queen-elizabeth-ii-king-charles-iii-england-river-thames-d5ed1f082ad90f65712658928d1f24dc">lies in state</a>&nbsp;at the 900-year-old Westminster Hall at the Houses of Parliament. Charles, Princess Anne, Prince Andrew and Prince Edward also stood vigil with the coffin when it lay in St. Giles’ Cathedral in Edinburgh earlier this week.

After the state funeral on Monday, attended by 2,000 guests, including U.S. President Joe Biden and other visiting heads of state, Elizabeth’s coffin will be carried through the historic heart of London, from Westminster Abbey to Wellington Arch near Buckingham Palace on a horse-drawn gun carriage with Charles and other royals walking behind.

Also among the funeral guests will be nearly 200 people honored by the late queen for their work responding to the COVID-19 pandemic and in sectors including charities, healthcare and education.

Amid pomp and pageantry, the coffin will travel along virtually the same route, including down the flag-lined Mall to the one it passed Wednesday in front of hushed throngs of mourners when it was taken from the palace to the Houses of Parliament.

London’s Heathrow Airport announced it will halt all flights for 15 minutes before the two-minute national silence on Monday, until 15 minutes after it has finished “to avoid noise disruption.”

From London, the queen’s coffin will then be driven in the state hearse to Windsor for a committal service at St. George’s Chapel near Windsor Castle, attended by 800 people, including members of the queen’s household and Windsor estate staff.

At the end of the service, the coffin will be lowered into the Royal Vault and the sovereign’s piper will play a lament. The Archbishop of Canterbury, Justin Welby, will pronounce the blessing and the congregation will sing “God Save The King.”

Members of the royal family will then hold a private burial service at the King George VI Memorial Chapel, where the queen will be interred with her late husband, Prince Philip, who&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/prince-philip-dead-at-99-0143185dc6ad526d4bb6357034972bb3">died last year at 99</a>.

JACKSON COUNTY, Kan. – Law enforcement authorities are investigating a woman on drug allegations after a traffic stop.

Just after 3:30a.m. Sept. 14, a sheriff's deputy conducted a traffic stop on a 2011 Chevrolet sedan for a traffic infraction near 110th Road and U.S. Highway 75, according to Sheriff Tim Morse.

 A Jackson County K-9 alerted to the presence of narcotics in the car. A search of the vehicle led to the discovery of cocaine, an additional controlled substance and drug paraphernalia. 

The front seat passenger, Semaja L. Willform, 20, of Merriam, had an outstanding felony warrant from Johnson County for burglary. Willform was arrested and transported to the Jackson County Jail and was booked on requested charges of possession of cocaine, possession of a controlled substance, possession of drug paraphernalia and trafficking contraband into a correctional facility, according to Morse.

SALINE COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities investigating a series of license plate and vehicle thefts in Salina have made an arrest.

On Thursday, police arrested Anthony Bernal, 39, of Salina, in connection to the stolen license plate case, two stolen vehicle cases, and a case in which a loaf of bread and a package of Oscar Meyer hotdogs were stolen from a south Salina store, according to Salina Police Captain Paul Forrester.

On Tuesday afternoon, a&nbsp;reported Hispanic man driving a black Dodge Caravan pulled into a parking stall next to a 2013 Dodge Grand Caravan in the parking lot of Dollar Tree, 1201 W. Crawford Street. The man was seen walking to the back of the Grand Caravan and removing the license plate. He then got back into the Caravan and drove to nearby Club Carwash.

The man then came back to the Grand Caravan with a different license plate, which he handed to the owner of the Grand Caravan and asked whether it was hers. When she confronted him about stealing her license plate, he fled.

This incident was captured on surveillance video from Club Carwash, according to Forrester.

On Wednesday, police respond to a report of suspicious activity in the 100 block of S. 12th Street. During that encounter, an officer took from one of the people involved a Dodge vehicle key. The key would later help police develop a suspect.

Just after 12:30 a.m. Thursday, officers responded to the report of people snooping in the 100 block of S. Baker Street. When police arrived, they found a charcoal gray Dodge Caravan parked in a nearby alley with its hazard lights on, the hood propped open, and the driver's door open. The tag on the vehicle was the one reported stolen from a 2013 Dodge Grand Caravan Tuesday afternoon.

Police also discovered that the Caravan had been reported stolen out of Garden City. When officers searched the Caravan, they found narcotics and drug paraphernalia, according to Forrester.

During the investigation into this incident, police made contact with Bernal. Also on Thursday, an officer took the Dodge vehicle key from the Wednesday incident to the impound lot where the Caravan was kept and discovered that the key belonged to that particular minivan.

At approximately 3 p.m. Thursday, officers responded to a report of a stolen vehicle in the 1000 block of Park Street. A 62-year-old Salina man told police that he had loaned his 2008 Pontiac G6, valued at $2,000, to another person.

While that person and Bernal were at the residence on Park Street, Bernal left in the vehicle without permission, Forrester said.

At 6 p.m. Thursday, Bernal was found asleep in the G6 in the parking lot of Walmart, 2900 S. Ninth Street. While officers were talking with Bernal, Walmart personnel approached and told police that Bernal had allegedly stolen a loaf of Sara Lee bread and a package of Oscar Meyer hotdogs, which were valued at $5, Forrester said.

Bernal also allegedly was found to be in possession of 10 Klonopin pills for which he had no prescription or tax stamp.

Bernal is being held on requested charges of Felony theft,&nbsp;Felony possession of stolen property, Possession of a stimulant, No tax stamp, Two counts of misdemeanor theft, Two counts of driving while suspended and Two counts of misdemeanor possession of stolen property.

Bernal has previous convictions for theft, aggravated battery, DUI and drugs in Finney and Lyon County, according to the Kansas Dept. of Corrections&nbsp;

Police arrest Kansas felon for license plate, vehicle thefts

SEDGWICK COUNTY—Law enforcement authorities investigating&nbsp; a fatal shooting that left 21-year-old Devin Bills of Wichita deceased have arrested&nbsp;19-year-old Laquavion Bentley.

Just after 1:30 a.m. Thursday, police were dispatched to a shooting in the 4500 block of South Hydraulic. Upon arrival, Officers located Bills unconscious and not breathing with two gunshot wounds to his upper body, according to Officer Juan&nbsp;Rebolledo.

Officers began life-saving measures. EMS pronounced Bills deceased on the scene.

The investigation revealed that Bills and several other people were outside the residence hanging out when a verbal argument ensued, and shots were fired. The suspect later identified as Bentley fled the scene in a vehicle. 

He is being<a href="https://ssc.sedgwickcounty.org/sheriffinmates/SheriffInmateDetail.aspx?nameId=20075063"> held on $600,000 bonds</a> on requested charges of 2nd degree intentional murder, failure to comply and criminal possession of a firearm, according to online jail records.

Kan. teen accused of murder after shooting while 'hanging out' 

SUMNER COUNTY — One person was injured in an accident just before 4:30p.m. Thursday involving a school bus transporting the Winfield middle school football team and an SUV that collided on U.S.160 at Oliver.

A 2007 Chevy Tahoe was southbound on Oliver and failed to stop at the intersection, according to the Sumner County Sheriff's office. The SUV and the westbound school bus collided.

A 9-year-old boy in the Tahoe was ejected from the SUV. EMS transported him to an area hospital for treatment of critical injuries.

No children or staff on the school bus were hurt, according to USD 465.&nbsp; Students and staff were transferred to another Winfield bus and transported back to Winfield Middle School. Coaches, staff and administration were on site and coordinated with the sheriff and other authorities. 

The team was traveling to Wellington for a game that was postponed and will be rescheduled.

SUMNER COUNTY —The Wellington middle school football game against Winfield was postponed Thursday after the Winfield bus was involved in a car accident on the way Wellington, according to USD 465.

The crash occurred at the corner of Highway 160 and Oliver.

At this point, it appears that everyone is okay, but the bus was damaged and unable to travel. The game will be rescheduled for a later date.

Gov. encourages Kansans to visit State Fair before it ends 

WASHINGTON (AP) — A federal judge on Thursday appointed a veteran New York jurist to serve as an independent arbiter in the criminal investigation into the presence of&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/mar-a-lago-government-and-politics-1fef158c3a66bfc0ba6224570753ba47">classified documents at former President Donald Trump’s Florida home</a>, and refused to permit the Justice Department to resume its use of the highly sensitive records seized in an FBI search last month.

U.S. District Judge Aileen Cannon empowered the newly named special master, Raymond Dearie, to review the entire tranche of records taken in the&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/donald-trump-mar-a-lago-government-and-politics-9e8d683afe87389407950af7ccfdbdd6">Aug. 8 search of Mar-a-Lago</a>&nbsp;and set a November deadline for his work. In the meantime, she continued to block the department from using for its investigation roughly 100 documents marked as classified that were seized.

The&nbsp;<a href="https://storage.courtlistener.com/recap/gov.uscourts.flsd.618763/gov.uscourts.flsd.618763.89.0_1.pdf">sharply worded order from Cannon</a>, a Trump appointee, will almost certainly slow the pace of the investigation and set the stage for a challenge to a federal appeals court. The department had given Cannon until Thursday to put on hold her order pausing investigators' review of classified records while the special master completes his work. The department said it would ask the Atlanta-based 11th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals to intervene if she did not do so by then.

The Justice Department did not immediately comment on Thursday's ruling.

Cannon,&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/donald-trump-mar-a-lago-government-and-politics-bc980316f80f88620b92e5666f96251c">who last week granted the Trump team's request</a>&nbsp;for a special master over the objections of the Justice Department, made clear in her Thursday order that she was not prepared to blindly accept the government's characterizations of the documents, saying “evenhanded procedure does not demand unquestioning trust in the determinations of the Department of Justice.”

She turned aside the department's position that Trump could not have any ownership interests in the documents, and said she was receptive to the possibility that the former president could raise valid claims of privilege over at least some of the records. She noted ongoing disagreements between the two sides about the “proper designation of the seized materials” and the “legal implications flowing from those designations.”

“The Court does not find it appropriate to accept the Government’s conclusions on these important and disputed issues without further review by a neutral third party in an expedited and orderly fashion,” she wrote.

The&nbsp;<a href="https://storage.courtlistener.com/recap/gov.uscourts.flsd.618763/gov.uscourts.flsd.618763.91.0.pdf">selection of Dearie</a>, a former federal prosecutor who for years served as the chief judge of the federal court based in Brooklyn, came after both the&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/donald-trump-mar-a-lago-criminal-investigations-government-and-politics-4400379ff118bdaf16ffd7a51bb2c4e9">Justice Department and Trump’s lawyers made clear</a>&nbsp;they would be satisfied with his appointment as a so-called special master.

As special master, Dearie will be responsible for reviewing the entire inventory of documents taken during the search of Mar-a-Lago —&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/donald-trump-mar-a-lago-government-and-politics-6bd103a8e418166b17a34d77e8d9102d">the FBI says it recovered about 11,000 documents</a>&nbsp;from the home during its search, including roughly 100 with classification markings — and segregating out any that may be covered by claims of executive privilege or attorney-client privilege. He is also tasked with identifying any personal materials of Trump's that should possibly be returned to him.

The Justice Department said last week that it did not believe that the special master should inspect records with classified markings or evaluate the former president's claims of privilege. Cannon rejected both positions Thursday, directing the special master to prioritize in his review the documents marked as classified, “and thereafter consider prompt adjustments to the Court’s Orders as necessary." She set a deadline of Nov. 30 for the special master to complete the work.

The Justice Department has been investigating for months the hoarding of top-secret materials and other classified documents at the Florida property after&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/hub/donald-trump">Trump</a>&nbsp;left office. Citing national security concerns, it has said its investigation would be harmed if the judge did not quickly lift her block on the department from continuing to make use of the classified records in its probe.

Cannon rejected that idea Thursday, saying “there has been no actual suggestion by the Government of any identifiable emergency or imminent disclosure of classified information arising from Plaintiff’s allegedly unlawful retention of the seized property.”

She added, “Instead, and unfortunately, the unwarranted disclosures that float in the background have been leaks to the media after the underlying seizure.”

She also said nothing in her order barred the department from “conducting investigations or bringing charges based on anything other than the actual content of the seized materials,” saying investigators were welcome to interview witnesses and collect information about the “movement and storage of seized materials.”

 </figure>WASHINGTON (AP) — A federal judge on Thursday appointed a veteran New York jurist to serve as an independent arbiter in the criminal investigation into the presence of&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/mar-a-lago-government-and-politics-1fef158c3a66bfc0ba6224570753ba47">classified documents at former President Donald Trump’s Florida home</a>, and refused to permit the Justice Department to resume its use of the highly sensitive records seized in an FBI search last month.U.S. District Judge Aileen Cannon empowered the newly named special master, Raymond Dearie, to review the entire tranche of records taken in the&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/donald-trump-mar-a-lago-government-and-politics-9e8d683afe87389407950af7ccfdbdd6">Aug. 8 search of Mar-a-Lago</a>&nbsp;and set a November deadline for his work. In the meantime, she continued to block the department from using for its investigation roughly 100 documents marked as classified that were seized.The&nbsp;<a href="https://storage.courtlistener.com/recap/gov.uscourts.flsd.618763/gov.uscourts.flsd.618763.89.0_1.pdf">sharply worded order from Cannon</a>, a Trump appointee, will almost certainly slow the pace of the investigation and set the stage for a challenge to a federal appeals court. The department had given Cannon until Thursday to put on hold her order pausing investigators' review of classified records while the special master completes his work. The department said it would ask the Atlanta-based 11th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals to intervene if she did not do so by then.The Justice Department did not immediately comment on Thursday's ruling.Cannon,&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/donald-trump-mar-a-lago-government-and-politics-bc980316f80f88620b92e5666f96251c">who last week granted the Trump team's request</a>&nbsp;for a special master over the objections of the Justice Department, made clear in her Thursday order that she was not prepared to blindly accept the government's characterizations of the documents, saying “evenhanded procedure does not demand unquestioning trust in the determinations of the Department of Justice.”She turned aside the department's position that Trump could not have any ownership interests in the documents, and said she was receptive to the possibility that the former president could raise valid claims of privilege over at least some of the records. She noted ongoing disagreements between the two sides about the “proper designation of the seized materials” and the “legal implications flowing from those designations.”“The Court does not find it appropriate to accept the Government’s conclusions on these important and disputed issues without further review by a neutral third party in an expedited and orderly fashion,” she wrote.The&nbsp;<a href="https://storage.courtlistener.com/recap/gov.uscourts.flsd.618763/gov.uscourts.flsd.618763.91.0.pdf">selection of Dearie</a>, a former federal prosecutor who for years served as the chief judge of the federal court based in Brooklyn, came after both the&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/donald-trump-mar-a-lago-criminal-investigations-government-and-politics-4400379ff118bdaf16ffd7a51bb2c4e9">Justice Department and Trump’s lawyers made clear</a>&nbsp;they would be satisfied with his appointment as a so-called special master.As special master, Dearie will be responsible for reviewing the entire inventory of documents taken during the search of Mar-a-Lago —&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/donald-trump-mar-a-lago-government-and-politics-6bd103a8e418166b17a34d77e8d9102d">the FBI says it recovered about 11,000 documents</a>&nbsp;from the home during its search, including roughly 100 with classification markings — and segregating out any that may be covered by claims of executive privilege or attorney-client privilege. He is also tasked with identifying any personal materials of Trump's that should possibly be returned to him.The Justice Department said last week that it did not believe that the special master should inspect records with classified markings or evaluate the former president's claims of privilege. Cannon rejected both positions Thursday, directing the special master to prioritize in his review the documents marked as classified, “and thereafter consider prompt adjustments to the Court’s Orders as necessary." She set a deadline of Nov. 30 for the special master to complete the work.The Justice Department has been investigating for months the hoarding of top-secret materials and other classified documents at the Florida property after&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/hub/donald-trump">Trump</a>&nbsp;left office. Citing national security concerns, it has said its investigation would be harmed if the judge did not quickly lift her block on the department from continuing to make use of the classified records in its probe.Cannon rejected that idea Thursday, saying “there has been no actual suggestion by the Government of any identifiable emergency or imminent disclosure of classified information arising from Plaintiff’s allegedly unlawful retention of the seized property.”She added, “Instead, and unfortunately, the unwarranted disclosures that float in the background have been leaks to the media after the underlying seizure.”She also said nothing in her order barred the department from “conducting investigations or bringing charges based on anything other than the actual content of the seized materials,” saying investigators were welcome to interview witnesses and collect information about the “movement and storage of seized materials.”Trump’s lawyers had asked last month for a judge to name a&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/florida-government-and-politics-1cc6c63010da10a19fb8cfc8595ffe38">special master</a>&nbsp;to do an independent review of the records and filter out any that may be covered by claims of privilege. The Justice Department argued the appointment was unnecessary, saying it had already done its own review and Trump had no right to raise executive privilege claims that ordinarily permit the president to withhold certain information from the public and Congress.Cannon disagreed and directed both sides to name potential candidates for the role.The Trump team recommended either Dearie or a Florida lawyer for the job. The Justice Department said Monday that, in addition to the two retired judges whose names it submitted, it would also be satisfied with a Dearie appointment.Dearie served as the top federal prosecutor for the Eastern District of New York from 1982 to 1986, at which point he was appointed to the federal bench by then-President Ronald Reagan. He has also served on the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court, which authorizes Justice Department wiretap applications in investigations involving suspected agents of a foreign power.Dearie was chief judge of the district from 2007 to 2011, when he took senior status. But the Justice Department has said he remains active and had indicated to officials that he was available for the position and could work expeditiously if appointed to it.
