RILEY COUNTY —A man listed on the Kansas Public Offender registry for two drug crimes including heroin distribution has been arrested for an alleged child sex crime in Manhattan.&nbsp;

Police arrested Miles Loren Martin, 60, Manhattan, on requested charges of aggravated indecent liberties with a child and Sexual exploitation of child, according to a report from the Riley County Police Department. He is being held on a $500,000 bond.

He was in custody Monday for an alleged burglary and theft.  The sex crime is alleged to have occurred Monday, according to the RCPD.

Due to the nature of the crime that involves a minor, police are not releasing additional details.

Registered offender jailed for alleged child sex crime in Manhattan

TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) — Several dozen protesters chanted, laid down on the floor and blocked the Kansas Senate's main entrance Tuesday, hoping to pressure it into taking a vote on a bipartisan plan to expand Medicaid.

About 50 people protested at the Statehouse for almost three hours. Capitol police removed 23 protesters from in front of the Senate chamber in an attempt to clear the area. Their cases will be forwarded to the local district attorney for potential prosecution on criminal trespassing or disturbing the peace charges, according to the Kansas Highway Patrol, which oversees the police.

The protesters began by gathering around the rail of the third-floor rotunda and chanting “What do we want? Healthcare! When do want it? Now!” Some of them banged big inflatable sticks together to make a drumming sound that could be heard throughout the building.

“It's frustration with a broken process,” said Rabbi Moti Rieber, executive director of the pro-expansion Kansas Interfaith Alliance. “When the process doesn't work, sometimes you have to go outside the process a little bit.”

Outside the Senate, protesters chanted, “People are dying! Shame on you!” The people on the floor wore sashes with the names of diseases on them, such as “COVID-19." Protesters included disabled rights advocates and members of the liberal populist Poor People's Campaign.

“I don't think it helps their cause,” said Sen. Richard Hilderbrand, a Galena Republican. "It's not the way to get people to change their opinion.”

Abortion opponents are blocking consideration of the expansion plan until lawmakers put a proposed anti-abortion amendment to the state constitution on the ballot. The amendment would overturn a Kansas Supreme Court decision last year protecting abortion rights, and they contend expanding Medicaid would lead otherwise to taxpayer-funded abortions.

“This is the people's house, where every opinion is heard, and the opinion I have heard loud and clear is that Kansans do not want their tax dollars to pay for abortion,” said Senate President Susan Wagle, a Wichita Republican, who is leading the anti-abortion effort.

Mike Oxford, an disabled-rights activist, dismissed the argument as a purely political one, calling it “grossly unfair.”

Police remove Medicaid expansion protesters from Kan. Statehouse

WASHINGTON (AP) — Joe Biden decisively won Michigan’s Democratic presidential primary, seizing a key battleground state that helped propel Bernie Sanders’ insurgent candidacy four years ago. The former vice president’s victory there, as well as in Missouri, Mississippi and Idaho, dealt a serious blow to Sanders and substantially widened Biden’s path to the nomination.

Biden again showed strength Tuesday with working-class voters and African Americans, who are vital to winning the Democratic nomination. Sanders’ narrow hopes for good news rested on North Dakota and Washington state. Washington’s primary was too early to call, and because all votes there are cast by mail or by dropping them off in a ballot box, many ballots were marked for candidates who have since dropped out of the race.

The six-state contest Tuesday marked the first time voters weighed in on the primary since it effectively&nbsp;<a href="http://interactives.ap.org/2020-candidates/" target="_blank">narrowed to a two-person race</a>&nbsp;between Sanders and Biden. And the first four states on Tuesday went to Biden, a dramatic reversal for a campaign that&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/9dc340b2d7ce0e6be4958dd5ab90c6b2">appeared on the brink of collapse</a>&nbsp;just two weeks ago. Now it is Sanders, whose candidacy was ascendant so recently, who must contemplate a path forward.

Addressing supporters in Philadelphia, Biden noted that many had “declared that this candidacy was dead” only days ago, but “now we’re very much alive.” He also asked Sanders supporters to back him going forward.

“We need you, we want you, and there’s a place in our campaign for each of you. I want to thank Bernie Sanders and his supporters for their tireless energy and their passion,” Biden said. “We share a common goal, and together we’ll beat Donald Trump.”

It marked a high point for the former vice president’s staff. They sipped beer and broke into an impromptu dance party after his speech, which was held close to his Philadelphia headquarters.

Even as the contours of the race came into shape, however, new uncertainty was sparked by fears of&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/VirusOutbreak">the spreading coronavirus</a>. Both candidates abruptly canceled rallies in Ohio that were scheduled for Tuesday night. That set the stage for Biden’s remarks in Philadelphia, while Sanders flew home to Vermont and didn’t plan to address the public.

Sanders’ campaign also said all future events would be decided on a case-by-case basis given public health concerns, while Biden called off a scheduled upcoming Florida stop. Still, the former vice president said Tuesday night that he’d be announcing plans to combat the coronavirus later this week.

The Democratic National Committee also said that Sunday’s debate between Sanders and Biden would be conducted&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/179ecd9019b259ce800707389a127a96">without an audience</a>.

Among former White House hopefuls and leaders of powerful liberal groups, however, Biden’s momentum is now undeniable.

Bradley Beychok, president and co-founder of American Bridge 21st Century, a liberal super PAC, said his group “will be ALL IN to elect @JoeBiden as our next president.” The organization is spending millions of dollars trying to win over people who backed President Donald Trump in key states in 2016.

Guy Cecil, chairman of the flagship Democratic outside political organization Priorities USA, tweeted: “The math is now clear. Joe Biden is going to be the Democratic nominee for President and @prioritiesUSA is going to do everything we can to help him defeat Donald Trump in November.”

There were other major warning signs for Sanders on Tuesday. He again struggled to win support from black voters. About 70% of Mississippi’s Democratic primary voters were African American, and 86% of them supported Biden, according to an AP VoteCast survey of the electorate.

After Sanders upset Hillary Clinton in Michigan four years ago, his loss there Tuesday was particularly sobering. It undermined his argument that he could appeal to working-class voters and that he could expand the electorate with new young voters.

One of the few bright notes for Sanders was his strength among young voters, but even that has a downside because they didn’t turn out enough to keep him competitive. Sanders won 72% of those under 30 in Missouri and 65% in Michigan, according to AP VoteCast. The senator was also about even with Biden among voters ages 30 to 44.

“There’s no sugarcoating it. Tonight’s a tough night,” New York Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, one of Sanders’ highest-profile supporters, said on Instagram. “Tonight’s a tough night for the movement overall. Tonight’s a tough night electorally.”

Another top Sanders backer, Minnesota Rep. Ilhan Omar, tweeted: “Yes we are a family, united in restoring our democracy and committed to defeating Trump, but that doesn’t mean we should stop fighting for the candidate that best represents our policy priorities in this Primary.”

According to&nbsp;<a href="https://interactives.ap.org/delegate-tracker/" target="_blank">an Associated Press analysis</a>, Biden had picked up at least 153 new delegates: 53 in Michigan, 40 in Missouri, 29 in Mississippi, five in North Dakota, 17 in Washington and nine in Idaho on Tuesday. Sanders got 89: 35 in Michigan, 23 in Missouri, two in Mississippi, seven in Idaho, five in North Dakota and 17 in Washington.

Although six states voted, Michigan, with its 125 delegates, got most of the attention. Trump won the state by only 10,704 votes during the general election, his closest margin of victory among Michigan, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin. Those states gave Trump the narrow edge in the 2016 Electoral College after Clinton won the popular vote.

Sanders has vowed not to drop out regardless of Tuesday’s results and frequently railed against the “Democratic establishment” that he says has aligned against him.

In addition to the powerful groups now siding with Biden, the former vice president has picked up the endorsements of many of his former presidential rivals, including Sen. Kamala Harris, Sen. Cory Booker and, as of Tuesday, entrepreneur Andrew Yang. Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, sometimes mentioned as a possible vice presidential choice, also endorsed Biden and campaigned with him ahead of Tuesday’s primary.

Biden also gave a nod to all his former competitors, saying, “We’re bringing this party together.”

“That’s what we have to do,” he said.

Not every Democrat was lining up behind Biden, though. Michigan Rep. Debbie Dingell, who represents a sprawling district from the college town of Ann Arbor to the Detroit suburbs, said Tuesday that she’s staying neutral.

“I remember what it was like four years ago and the vitriol and the anger, the people mad at each other the whole election cycle. We can’t afford that,” Dingell said. “It’s about getting out and voting in November.”

Like Sanders, Biden has no public events scheduled for Wednesday. And though he’s celebrating a growing delegate lead, he’s still confronting voters who question his positions, which include a gun control plan that reinstates an assault weapons ban and includes a voluntary buyback program for assault weapons.

That issue was at the center of a testy exchange with a worker while Biden was rallying earlier Tuesday in Detroit. The man accused him of “actively trying to end our Second Amendment right.” Biden shot back, “You’re full of shit,” but went on to say that while he supports the Second Amendment, “Do you need 100 rounds?”

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (AP) — If presidential candidate Joe Biden is going to continue the momentum he gained by winning 10 states on Super Tuesday, Missouri figures to play an important role.

Missouri is among the more conservative of the six states holding Democratic primaries on Tuesday, a potential advantage for the former vice president in what has become essentially a head-to-head battle with Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders — a self-proclaimed Democratic socialist.

Whoever wins the Missouri primary faces an uphill battle to carry the state in November against Republican President Donald Trump. The last Democrat to carry Missouri was President Bill Clinton in 1996. Barack Obama narrowly lost in Missouri in 2008, but since then the state has turned decidedly Republican. Mitt Romney carried Missouri by 9 percentage points in 2012. and Trump won the state by 19 percentage points on the way to victory in 2016.

Idaho, Michigan, Mississippi, North Dakota and Washington also will hold primaries Tuesday.

Missouri was long considered a bellwether state until the recent trend. Missouri voted for the winning presidential candidate every time but once in the 1900s, missing only in 1956 when it picked Democrat Adlai Stevenson instead of Republican President Dwight Eisenhower.

Biden started as the early front-runner but was declared all but finished before rebounding with a much stronger than expected showing during last week's elections.

Biden and Sanders have been largely cordial. Biden, without naming Sanders, has taken aim at Sanders’ frequent contention that Biden is beholden to the party establishment.

Sanders, at a rally in St. Louis on Monday, shot back at those who say Biden is more electable, saying it’s the enthusiasm and excitement of his campaign that will bring out more voters in November to defeat Trump.

University of Missouri-St. Louis political scientist Dave Robertson said the surge toward Biden in the Midwest could indicate good things for the Democrats in November “because we might get a pattern with white working-class voters coming back to the Democrats to some extent."

“If Biden has a pretty big margin and it’s a big-time vote, it could indicate that white working-class voters are coming back to a moderate in the Democratic Party," he said.

As of Tuesday (3/10) evening, the state&nbsp; had 13 people under investigation for the virus and waiting for test results, according to a media release from the KDHE. Twenty-five have tested negative and only one person confirmed.

On Saturday, the state's first presumptive positive case of COVID-19 in a was confirmed in a Johnson County woman under the age of 50.&nbsp; As of Monday, the patient is at KU Med being monitored and doing well.

There are currently 21 patients Under Investigation and may need testing.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2015 Jeep Cherokee driven by 57-year old Valerie L. Harper of Burrton was southbound on&nbsp;Worthington Road just north of Stroud Road when the&nbsp;Jeep left the roadway, struck the bridge rail, rolled and came to rest on its side in the creek.

EMS transported Harper to Hutchinson Regional Medical Center. She was properly restrained at the time of the accident, according to the KHP.

KANSAS CITY, KAN. –&nbsp;John Sebestyen, 51, Mission Viejo, Calif., was sentenced Monday to 37 months in prison for "washing" $1 bills to produce counterfeit $100 bills, according to U.S. Attorney Stephen McAllister. In addition, the defendant was ordered to pay $19,900 in restitution.

Sebestyen was the third of three defendants sentenced in the case. Two co-defendants already were sentenced:&nbsp;Courtney Campbell,&nbsp;38, Bouse, Ariz. (37 months, $18,100 restitution) and&nbsp;Steven Shane Escamilla, 31, Laguna Hills, Calif.&nbsp;(27 months, $19,900 restitution).

&nbsp; According to documents filed in court, an employee at a hotel in Overland Park contacted police to report that the defendants, who were staying at the hotel, were acting suspiciously. They deposited trash in containers away from their rooms that contained evidence of criminal activity.

&nbsp;The defendants washed the ink off $1 bills and reprinted them to look like $100 bills. They used the counterfeit bills to purchase items from retailers in the Kansas City metro area including Target and Ulta Beauty. In some cases, they returned items and received refunds in genuine currency.

Man caught trying to make $1 bills into $100 bills at Kan. hotel

JACKSON COUNTY—Law enforcement authorities are investigating two suspects on multiple charges after a weekend traffic stop.

Just after 11p.m. Saturday, a sheriff’s deputy  stopped a 2005 Infiniti for an alleged equipment violation near 134th and U.S. Highway 75, according to Sheriff Tim Morse.

Deputies arrested the driver, Ryan Michael Fidler, 36, of Topeka for driving while revoked and driving while a habitual violator. He has previous convictions for arson, forgery and theft, according to the Kansas Department of Corrections.

The passenger, Samantha Louise Townsend, 36, of Topeka was arrested for possession of methamphetamine, marijuana and drug paraphernalia. Both subjects were booked into the Jackson County Jail.

MANHATTAN, KAN. (AP) —&nbsp;A first-degree murder charge has been dismissed against a Manhattan man in the death of his former girlfriend's 2-month-old son.

The dismissal comes after two previous trials against D'Khari Lyons, 25, ended in mistrials. He was accused of killing Michael Calvert Jr. in November 2018.

Prosecutors contend the boy suffered blunt force trauma while Lyons was caring for him after his mother briefly left the boy in Lyons care to take her other children to school.

Lyons has insisted he is innocent. His attorneys argued he didn't know what happened to the baby.

Riley County Attorney Barry Wilkerson filed the motion to dismiss Friday but the charges could be refiled.

A September 2019 trial was declared a mistrial because the jury could not reach a unanimous verdict. The second mistrial was declared in January because prosecutors believed the defense asked inadmissible and prejudicial questions.

After mistrials, charges dropped in Kansas infant's death

SALINA – A Kansas man has been convicted of two counts of insurance fraud and a related charge, according to Kansas Attorney General Derek Schmidt.

On Monday, Daniel Carl D’Albini, 59, Marion, pleaded no contest in Saline County District Court to two felony counts of insurance fraud and one felony count of interference with law enforcement.

Chief Judge Rene Young accepted the plea and scheduled sentencing for June 1, at 11 a.m.

An investigation by the Saline County Sheriff’s Office found that sometime between October 2017 and December 2017, in order to ensure the continuation of his homeowner’s insurance policy, D’Albini submitted false documentation to his insurance provider alleging the roof on his home had been inspected and required no repairs when in fact no such inspection had occurred.

In addition, in December 2017, D’Albini falsely reported his truck as stolen and made a claim against his automobile insurance for theft.

As part of a plea agreement with the attorney general’s office, D’Albini has agreed to pay $460,083.51 in restitution and serve 30 days in the Saline County Jail.

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump pitched his proposed payroll tax break Tuesday on Capitol Hill as pressure mounts on the administration and Congress to work more vigorously to contain the coronavirus outbreak and respond to the financial fallout.

Trump’s economic team joined in presenting the economic stimulus package privately to wary Senate Republicans, who have been cool to additional spending at this stage. Democrats are preparing their own package of low-cost virus testing, unemployment insurance and sick pay for workers struggling to keep paychecks coming as the outbreak disrupts workplaces.

“We’re taking this unbelievably seriously,” Trump said after his meeting at the Capitol. “It will go away, just stay calm.”

Asked why he has not yet been tested for the virus, after having been in close contact with several advisers and members of Congress who are now self-quarantined after exposure, Trump said: “I don’t think it’s a big deal” and “I feel very good.”

White House officials have been blindsided by the president’s sudden moves. As Trump headed to Capitol Hill, two administration officials said the proposals he was putting in play had not been completed. They were unauthorized to discuss the planning and requested anonymity.

In addition to payroll tax relief, Trump has said he wants help for hourly-wage workers to ensure they’re “not going to miss a paycheck” and “don’t get penalized for something that’s not their fault.” He’s also mentioned small-business loans.

But so far, the president’s approach, based on tax breaks, is receiving a cool response from Democrats as well as Republicans from his own party who say it’s too soon to consider fresh spending from Capitol Hill. Trump also said Tuesday he planned to help the beleaguered cruise-ship and airline industries.

Earlier, Speaker Nancy Pelosi told House Democrats that Congress should keep working this week despite concerns about infection spreading there.

“We are the captains of the ship,” Pelosi said during a closed-door meeting, according to a person in the room unauthorized to discuss the private caucus and granted anonymity. “We are the last to leave.” But time is short as Congress heads toward its scheduled break next week.

For most people, the new coronavirus causes only mild or moderate symptoms, such as fever and cough. For some, especially older adults and people with existing health problems, it can cause more severe illness, including pneumonia.

The vast majority of people recover from the new virus. According to the World Health Organization, people with mild illness recover in about two weeks, while those with more severe illness may take three to six weeks to recover. In mainland China, where the virus first exploded, more than 80,000 people have been diagnosed and more than 58,000 have so far recovered.

At the U.S. Capitol, lawmakers were given new instructions on how to protect themselves, with the House’s attending physician asking them to stop shaking hands or touching people during greetings. He recommended the split-fingers Star Trek greeting instead.

Crowds are the norm in the Capitol and handshakes are coin of the realm there, even between political foes. But about a half dozen lawmakers have placed themselves in quarantine after being exposed to someone who had the virus, and the norm has been upended.

During House Democrats’ closed session, one lawmaker, Rep. Raul Ruiz, D-Ca., who is a doctor, noted that the average age in Congress is 57, some lawmakers have underlying health conditions and their work requires them to fly back and forth between home and the capital.

Still, Pelosi implored lawmakers to keep working to strengthen the country’s defenses. Rather than picking up their own coffee and snacks for the breakfast meeting, lawmakers were served by staff from the buffet and warned off touching the serving utensils.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell opened the chamber saying only that Republicans “look forward to discussing” the ideas “so we can all consider the best ways to move forward.” Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin and adviser Larry Kudlow are expected at the weekly GOP lunch.

The Senate Democratic leader, Chuck Schumer, said the virus outbreak demands a “health care” solution. Democrats are proposing affordable testing, more unemployment benefits and paid leave for working families affected by the virus.

“The administration seems to believe that the answer to any problem is another tax cut,” Schumer said. “The best way to ensure economic security for the American people is to deal directly with the coronavirus itself.

It was not immediately clear how Trump was aiming to provide assistance to employees weighing whether to stay home because of illness — a crucial aim of public health officials seeking to curtail the spread of the virus.

One mechanism, backed by the Trump-allied National Association of Manufacturers, involves a proposed tax credit for employers who pay employees who are quarantined.

It’s a question that’s been problematic for the NCAA for years; in 2016, the <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2016/10/04/us/politics/supreme-court-declconsider-ncaa-rules-on-paying-athletes.html" target="_blank">U.S. Supreme Court declined</a> to take up an antitrust suit filed by a former UCLA basketball player. California took matters into its own hands last year <a href="https://leginfo.legislature.ca.gov/faces/billTextClient.xhtml?bill_id=201920200SB206" target="_blank">with a law</a> to let students profit off their likeness, though it doesn't take effect until 2023.

Currently,
 student-athletes are ruled ineligible if they make money on 
endorsements. Missouri U.S. Rep. Emanuel Cleaver has proposed <a href="https://www.kshb.com/news/local-news/rep-cleaver-to-propose-law-requiring-colleges-to-pay-student-athletes" target="_blank">a national rule</a>
 that would have colleges directly pay athletes. The Kansas plan doesn’t
 go as far, instead allowing money from outside endorsement contracts.

Emporia
 State University President Allison Garrett urged Kansas lawmakers to 
approve the bill, but ultimately hopes it never has to take effect.

“This
 legislation in Kansas makes sense at this time,” Garrett said, “but the
 hope would be that there is that federal legislation.”

It’s a 
sort of begrudging endorsement from the schools. Kansas State University
 Athletic Director Gene Taylor wants to keep up the current system, in 
which student-athletes aren’t allowed outside endorsements deals.

“We
 would prefer no rules, honestly,” Taylor said. “Just let us continue 
that this scholarship is valuable enough. But that’s not the direction 
this is going, so we have to move forward.”

The colleges don’t 
want to be on the cutting edge, where they might run afoul of NCAA rules
 and trigger punishments from the league. But they also don’t want to be
 left behind if other states allow endorsement deals.

To walk that tightrope, <a href="http://www.kslegislature.org/li/b2019_20/measures/sb474/" target="_blank">Kansas’ bill</a>
 includes a trigger: It would only legalize outside endorsement deals 
for student-athletes after 15 other states have similar laws.

For schools in Kansas, the concern is that recruiting won’t be easy 
if other states allow athletes to make money but Kansas doesn’t.

“I
 think it gets very tough,” University of Kansas Director of Athletics 
Jeff Long said. “Without this bill passing, we would be placed at a 
disadvantage.”

The discussion comes at a time when KU <a href="https://www.kcur.org/post/ku-denies-wrongdoing-response-ncaas-charges-recruiting-violations" target="_blank">is being investigated</a>
 for potential NCAA recruiting violations. It’s based on federal court 
testimony in which Adidas representatives said they made payments to 
recruits. The school didn’t address the allegations during a legislative
 hearing in Topeka, but <a href="https://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/ncaab/2020/03/05/kansas-objects-to-ncaa-charges-in-response-to-allegations/111397794/" target="_blank">told the NCAA</a> that the agents weren’t working on behalf of KU.

Garrett wants to see enough controls in a Kansas law so the endorsement deals aren’t used as part of recruiting.

Lawmakers
 could take action on the bill later this session or continue work next 
year, according to Republican Sen. Julia Lynn, who chairs the Senate 
Commerce Committee.

Lynn said there are still a variety of details to work out, including how the endorsement deals would be taxed.

“Collegiate athletics is very complex. There are multiple layers there,” she said. “The money is really big in this issue.”

Republican
 Sen. Molly Baumgarnder wants to make sure there are enough protections 
in the bill, so athletes and their families know what they’re getting 
into with endorsement deals, especially when it comes to high school 
recruits.

“Agents are going to be flocking to high schools to try
 and enter into that contract,” Baumgarnder said. “How do the high 
school counselors, how do the high school coaches help that student that
 might be embarking on that next step?”

Smaller private schools, 
who aren’t major players in the recruiting game like KU, K-State and 
Wichita State are, are concerned about the types of endorsements that 
might be made available.

Some of the 20 schools in the Kansas 
Independent College Association have faith traditions that disapprove of
 alcohol and don’t allow it on campus.

But under the bill, the schools wouldn’t have any say in outside endorsement deals.

“A
 student-athlete could share his or her likeness with a beer company and
 the institution would have no power to limit such a contract,” KICA 
President Matt Lindsey told lawmakers.

the next five-star KU or K-State basketball recruits selling cars, shoes
 or soda.<a href="http://www.sfltimes.com/sports/ncaa-presses-senate-for-guardrails-on-athlete-pay" target="_blank">Dozens of states</a>, including <a href="http://www.kslegislature.org/li/b2019_20/measures/sb474/" target="_blank">Kansas</a>, <a href="https://www.ozarksfirst.com/local-news/local-news-local-news/both-parties-support-paying-college-athletes-in-missouri/" target="_blank">Missouri </a>and <a href="https://oklahoman.com/article/5651462/oklahoma-legislator-files-bill-to-pay-college-athletes" target="_blank">Oklahoma</a>, are thinking about changing the rules since the <a href="https://www.npr.org/2019/10/29/774439078/ncaa-starts-process-to-allow-compensation-for-college-athletes" target="_blank">NCAA said</a>
 in October that it will eventually allow student-athletes to be paid 
for their name, image and likeness. These bills are stopgaps, aimed at 
putting rules in place should there be a period of time before national

Kan. might let college athletes make money off their fame 

KANSAS CITY (AP) — The mayor of Kansas City struggled to vote Tuesday in the Missouri presidential primary after a worker mistakenly entered his name in the system.

Mayor Quinton Lucas, a Democrat,&nbsp;<a href="https://twitter.com/QuintonLucasKC/status/1237352164403617792">made a video&nbsp;</a>about the importance of voting before he headed into his normal polling location, Mount Pleasant Baptist Church, to cast his ballot. But he said a worker couldn't find his name in the system, even though he had cast ballots for himself at the site several times during 11 years of voting there.

Several other workers were called in to help. He said he was offered the chance to cast a provisional ballot but decided to try to sort out the situation and return later in the day. He later learned that the worker had entered his name into the system as “Lucas Quinton."

“I think frankly this is a sign that we need to do much better," Lucas said in a phone interview with The Associated Press.

He said elected officials spend a lot of time talking about election security, but his situation highlights another situation.

“I think the biggest threat to America's elections is not letting people vote, and I think we saw a little of that challenge today," he said.

Lucas initially thought the problem was that he was using his utility bill for identification instead of his driver's licence, which has expired. He said most people wouldn't have had the pull to figure out what happened.

“A regular person would just say, ‘I guess I'm not on the voter rolls,'" he said.

Shawn Kieffer, director of elections for the Kansas City election board, confirmed that an election judge entered Lucas' name incorrectly and then didn't realize the mistake. He said the worker should have called the election board to sort out the mixup.

He described the situation with Lucas as an “anomaly," noting he hadn't heard of any other issues.

“It has been going smooth," he said. “Today is a good day."

Kansas City mayor turned away from voting in presidential primary

CAMBRIDGE, MASS. (AP) —&nbsp;The Ivy League is canceling its men's and women's basketball tournaments because of concerns about the spread of coronavirus.

The four-team tournaments were scheduled to be played Friday through Sunday at Lavietes Pavilion in Cambridge. The Ivy League says it will award its automatic NCAA Tournament bids to regular-season champions Princeton women and Yale men.

The Big 12 men's and women's basketball tournament opens Wednesday in Kansas City.

The Ivy league also announced that it will limit spectators at all other sporting events for the rest of the spring season.

Ivy League first to cancel hoops tournaments due to virus concerns

WICHITA – A woman convicted of stealing $54,000 from an ailing resident of a Kansas nursing home was sentenced Monday to 32 months in prison, according to the Sedgwick County District Attorney's office.

Shelby Frias, 53&nbsp; Wichita, was found guilty in January of mistreatment of an elder person for taking the money from her stepmother's bank account from 2015-2017. 

At the time, Frias' 72-year-old stepmother was suffering from failing health and dementia.

The victim died about five months after the theft was discovered.

Frias testified at trial that her stepmother wanted her to take the money and keep it safe in case the stepmother was ever able to go home. 

Evidence at trial showed that Frias spent much of the money on shopping, hotels, trips and rental cars from 2015-2017.

Frias asked for probation at her sentencing hearing on Friday. District Judge Eric Williams denied the request and ordered Frias to pay restitution to the victim's estate after she is released from serving her sentence.

The case came to light when staff at the nursing home noticed the resident's housing bill was not being paid. The nursing home referred the case to the Kansas Department of Children and Families.

Kan. woman sentenced for theft from step-mother with dementia

SALINE COUNTY — One person died in an accident just before noon Monday in Saline County.

A golf car driven by Frederick Meyer, 84, was traveling in the 8900 Block of South Gypsum Valley Road south of Gypsum to check his mail, according to&nbsp;Saline County Sheriff's Lieutenant Jeremiah Hayes.

The golf cart traveled into the ditch and rolled. Meyer was ejected and the golf cart landed on him.

Meyer was pronounced dead at the scene, according to Hayes.

A passerby noticed the golf cart in the ditch and called Meyer's family, who found him and notified authorities, Hayes added.

RILEY COUNTY — Law enforcement authorities are investigating a stabbing and have a suspect in custody.

Just before 5p.m. Monday. officers filed a report for aggravated battery, aggravated domestic battery, aggravated assault, aggravated child endangerment, criminal damage to property and criminal restraint in East Manhattan, according the Riley County Police Department activity report.

Police arrested Arayah Perez, 21, of Manhattan in connection with the alleged crime on requested charges of aggravated battery, criminal damage to property, aggravated endangering a child and criminal restraint. Perez is being held on a bond of $20,000.00.
