SEDGWICK COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities are investigating a burglary and have two suspects in custody.

Just after 11:00 a.m. Friday, police were contacted by a 27-year-old man who reported unknown suspects stealing tools and other property from his pick-up truck on in the 12100 block of East Killenwood Court in Wichita, according to officer Kevin Wheeler.

The victim also reported that the stolen property was being sold on Facebook Marketplace.

Officers worked with the victim and located the suspects who were attempting to sell the property at a business near Pawnee and Meridian. 

Police arrested 37-year-old Todd Webber of Wichita on requested charges of burglary, theft, and possession of paraphernalia. They also arrested 31-year-old Richard Crouch of Wichita on requested charges of burglary, theft, and possession of methamphetamine.

Police were able to return the property to the owner.

The case will be presented to the Sedgwick County District Attorney’s Office.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Activists who were outraged when a white Kansas City police officer knelt on the back of a Black pregnant woman during an arrest last week have set up camp outside City Hall and say they plan to stay until the officer and police chief are fired.

They also want the city redirect 50% of the police department’s budget to social services aimed at the city’s Black community.

The unusual protest entered its fifth day Tuesday, with about 20 tents on the lawn and a well-organized “people’s city” that includes food, sanitation products, an arts area, a library of racial injustice-related books and private security.

Anyone who enters the area is required to undergo coronavirus-related health checks and wear a mask, and organizers are watching closely so no alcohol, drugs, sexual indiscretions or even littering occurs.

A statue of Abraham Lincoln is covered with pictures and names of Black people who have died in confrontations with police and demands that police Chief Rick Smith be fired.

Several civil rights organizations have long demanded Smith’s firing or resignation and those calls intensified after clashes between police and protesters during social justice demonstrations this summer sparked by the death of George Floyd in Minneapolis.

Smith has said he has no intention of resigning and the police department has declined to say whether the officer involved in the arrest is facing discipline or being investigated.

Jackson County Prosecutor Jean Peters-Baker’s office is reviewing the arrest to determine if any charges against the officer are warranted, and has asked the police department to investigate it, a spokesman for her office said Tuesday.

An average of 75 to 100 people participate in the protest every day, said attorney Stacy Shaw, one of the primary organizers. Only 100 people are allowed on the site at once.

“We’re at the seat of government and we’re having a social justice occupation that hasn’t been seen in Kansas City,” Shaw said. “People are excited that we are taking such drastic action and sticking to it. So we’re not just here for 15 minutes or a couple hours, that we are actually sticking to this and demanding justice.”

The city currently has no plans to evict the campers, a spokeswoman for Mayor Quinton Lucas said. The city council will discuss the situation at a meeting Thursday.

Shaw said some council members have visited the site and expressed support for the action. Other than a confrontation when police tried to evict them early Saturday when the tents were first set up, the protesters have not had any conflicts with police or city officials.

The occupation was sparked by the arrest of Deja Stallings, 25, on Wednesday during a memorial event at an east Kansas City intersection that has been the scene of protests and civil rights actions for years. It drew attention after videos of the arrest circulated on social media.

Police said officers were called to the scene by a business owner who reported a fight. They said Stallings, who is nine months pregnant, interfered when officers tried to arrest a man who refused to leave and she was put on the ground when she resisted arrest. She was issued a municipal summons for hindering an arrest.

Ryan Sorrell, of Black Rainbow, said Stallings remains the central focus of the protests but activists also are tired of city officials not responding to complaints about how police treat the city’s Black community.

“We’re not going to go anywhere,” Sorrell said. “They don’t want to arrest us. They don’t have the moral authority right now. They’re going to look bad if they do. This is an organized, peaceful, friendly community and they have no legal reason to remove us.”

Just after 1:30p.m. Monday, police responded to an assault report at an apartment complex in the 2300 Block of North Summerset in Wichita, according to Police Lt. Christian Cory.

At the scene, officers located a visibly shaken 22-year-old woman who had a head injury. She told police police an unknown suspect attacked her in the complex laundry room.&nbsp; He struck her multiple times with a hammer and removed her pants. The suspect heard someone approaching and ran.

EMS transported the victim to a local hospital with serious injuries, according to Cory.

The suspect is described as a tall, bald black male who wore a brown shirt.&nbsp;

NEW YORK (AP) — Eddie Van Halen, the guitar virtuoso whose blinding speed, control and innovation propelled his band Van Halen into one of hard rock’s biggest groups, fueled the unmistakable fiery solo in Michael Jackson’s hit “Beat It” and became elevated to the status of rock god, has died. He was 65

A person close to Van Halen’s family confirmed the rocker died Tuesday due to cancer. The person was not authorized to publicly release details in advance of an official announcement.

With his distinct solos, Eddie Van Halen fueled the ultimate California party band and helped knock disco off the charts starting in the late 1970s with his band’s self-titled debut album and then with the blockbuster record “1984,” which contains the classics “Jump,” “Panama” and “Hot for Teacher.”

Van Halen is among the top 20 best-selling artists of all time, and the band was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2007. Rolling Stone magazine put Eddie Van Halen at No. 8 in its list of the 100 greatest guitarists.

Eddie Van Halen was something of a musical contradiction. He was an autodidact who could play almost any instrument, but he couldn’t read music. He was a classically trained pianist who also created some of the most distinctive guitar riffs in rock history. He was a Dutch immigrant who was considered one of the greatest American guitarists of his generation.

The members of Van Halen — the two Van Halen brothers, Eddie and Alex; vocalist David Lee Roth; and bassist Michael Anthony — formed in 1974 in Pasadena, California. They were members of rival high school bands and then attended Pasadena City College together. They combined to form the band Mammoth, but then changed to Van Halen after discovering there was another band called Mammoth.

Their 1978 release “Van Halen” opened with a blistering “Runnin’ With the Devil” and then Eddie Van Halen showed off his astonishing skills in the next song, “Eruption,” a furious 1:42 minute guitar solo that swoops and soars like a deranged bird. The album also contained a cover of the Kinks’ “You Really Got Me” and “Ain’t Talkin’ ’Bout Love.”

Mike McCready of Pearl Jam told Rolling Stone magazine that listening to Van Halen’s “Eruption” was like hearing Mozart for the first time. “He gets sounds that aren’t necessarily guitar sounds — a lot of harmonics, textures that happen just because of how he picks.”

Van Halen released albums on a yearly timetable — “Van Halen II” (1979), “Women and Children First” (1980), “Fair Warning” (1981) and “Diver Down” (1982) — until the monumental “1984,” which hit No. 2 on the Billboard 200 album charts (only behind Michael Jackson’s “Thriller”). Rolling Stone ranked “1984” No. 81 on its list of the 100 Greatest Albums of the 1980s.

“Eddie put the smile back in rock guitar, at a time when it was all getting a bit brooding. He also scared the hell out of a million guitarists around the world, because he was so damn good. And original,” Joe Satriani, a fellow virtuoso, told Billboard in 2015.

Van Halen also played guitar on one of the biggest singles of the 1980s: Jackson’s “Beat It.” His solo lasted all of 20 seconds and took only a half an hour to record. He did it for free, as a favor to producer Quincy Jones, while the rest of his Van Halen bandmates were out of town.

Van Halen received no compensation or credit for the work, even though he rearranged the section he played on. “It was 20 minutes of my life. I didn’t want anything for doing that,” he told Billboard in 2015. “I literally thought to myself, ‘Who is possibly going to know if I play on this kid’s record?’” Rolling Stone ranked “Beat It” No. 344 on its list of the 500 Greatest Songs of All Time. But strains between Roth and the band erupted after their 1984 world tour and Roth left. The group then recruited Sammy Hagar as lead singer —some critics called the new formulation “Van Hagar” — and the band went on to score its first No. 1 album with “5150,” More studio albums followed, including “OU812,” “For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge” and “Balance.” Hit singles included “Why Can’t This Be Love” and “When It’s Love.”

Hagar was ousted in 1996 and former Extreme singer Gary Cherone stepped in for the album “Van Halen III,” a stumble that didn’t lead to another album and the quick departure of Cherone. Roth would eventually return in 2007 and team up with the Van Halen brothers and Wolfgang Van Halen, Eddie’s son, on bass for a tour, the album “A Different Kind of Truth” and the 2015 album “Tokyo Dome Live in Concert.”

Van Halen’s music has appeared in films as varied as “Superbad,” “Minions” and “Sing” as well as TV shows like “Glee” and “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia.” Video games such as “Gran Turismo 4” and “Guitar Hero” have used his riffs. Their song “Jamie’s Cryin” was sampled by rapper Tone Loc in his hit “Wild Thing.”

For much of his career, Eddie Van Halen wrote and experimented with sounds while drunk or high or both. He revealed that he would stay in his hotel room drinking vodka and snorting cocaine while playing into a tape recorder. (Hagar’s 2011 autobiography “Red: My Uncensored Life in Rock” portrays Eddie as a violent, booze-addled vampire, living inside a garbage-strewn house.)

“I didn’t drink to party,” Van Halen told Billboard. “Alcohol and cocaine were private things to me. I would use them for work. The blow keeps you awake and the alcohol lowers your inhibitions. I’m sure there were musical things I would not have attempted were I not in that mental state.”

Eddie Van Halen was born in Amsterdam and his family immigrated to California in 1962 when he was 7. His father was a big band clarinetist who rarely found work after coming to the U.S., and their mother was a maid who had dreams of her sons being classical pianists. Guitar rock god Eddie Van Halen dies of cancer at 65

WICHITA, KAN. –&nbsp;Corrine N. Bowman, 41, Medicine Lodge, Kan., is charged with one count of bank fraud, according to the United State's Attorney.

The crime is alleged to have occurred from 2017 to 2019 in Medicine Lodge.

The indictment alleges Bowman, who was working for Bowe Chevrolet, used company funds to pay expenses for her and her family.

If convicted, she could faces up to 30 years in federal prison and a fine up to $1 million. The Kansas Bureau of Investigation investigated.

The President's doctor reported Tuesday Trump now had 'no symptoms' of COVID-19. However, Navy Cmdr. Sean Conley, said Monday afternoon that the president would not be fully “out of the woods” for another week.

Trump returned to the White House Monday night aboard Marine One, gingerly climbing the South Portico steps before removing his mask and giving a double thumbs-up from the terrace, where aides had arranged American flags for the sunset occasion. He entered the White House, where aides were visible milling about the Blue Room, without wearing a face covering.

In a video released later, Trump offered a nonchalant take on the virus, contravening the public health warnings of his own administration that Americans take the threat seriously and to take precautions to avoid contracting and spreading the disease as cases continue to spike across the country

“Don’t be afraid of it,” Trump said. “You’re going to beat it. We have the best medical equipment, we have the best medicines.” His remarks were strong, but he was taking deeper breaths than usual as he delivered them.

Left unsaid was that the president’s experience with the disease has been far from typical, as his doctors rushed him onto experimental antiviral drugs and prescribed an aggressive course of steroids that would be unavailable to the average patient. While most must cope with their symptoms — and fear of whether they’ll take a turn for the worse — at home and alone, Trump had been staying in the presidential suite of one of the nation’s best hospitals, and he’s now at the White House, where there is a team of doctors on call with 24-hour monitoring.

On Tuesday, Trump also returned to his previous comparisons of COVID-19 to the seasonal flu.

“Many people every year, sometimes over 100,000, and despite the Vaccine, die from the Flu,” he tweeted. “Are we going to close down our Country? No, we have learned to live with it, just like we are learning to live with Covid, in most populations far less lethal!!!”

In fact, COVID-19 has already proven to be a more potent killer, particularly among older populations, than seasonal flu, and has shown indications of having long-term impacts on the health of younger people it infects.

Just days before, Trump suggested he had finally grasped the true nature of the virus, saying in a video, “I get it,” moments before he ventured out of the hospital while contagious to salute cheering supporters by motorcade — an outing that disregarded precautions meant to contain the virus.

Trump’s efforts to play down the threat of the virus in hopes of propping up the economy ahead of the election have drawn bipartisan criticism.

Republican Sen. John Cornyn of Texas told the Houston Chronicle editorial board that Trump had “let his guard down” in his effort to show that the country was moving beyond the virus and had created “confusion” about how to stay safe.

“We have to be realistic in this: COVID is a complete threat to the American population,” Dr. David Nace of the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, said of Trump’s comment.

“Most of the people aren’t so lucky as the president,” with an in-house medical unit and access to experimental treatments, added Nace, an expert on infections in older adults.

“It’s an unconscionable message,” agreed Dr. Sadiya Khan of Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine. “I would go so far as to say that it may precipitate or worsen spread.”

Likewise, Biden, who spent more than 90 minutes on the debate stage with Trump last week, said during an NBC town hall Monday night that he was glad Trump seemed to be recovering well, “but there’s a lot to be concerned about -- 210,000 people have died. I hope no one walks away with the message that it’s not a problem.” Biden tested negative for the virus on Sunday.

Biden said he’d “listen to the science” ahead of the upcoming debates, adding that the campaigns and the debate commission should be “very cautious” in making plans. “If scientists say that it’s safe, that distances are safe, then I think that’s fine,” he said. “I’ll do whatever the experts say.”

Conley said that because of Trump’s unusual level of treatment so early after discovery of his illness he was in “uncharted territory.” But the doctor also was upbeat at an afternoon briefing and said the president could resume his normal schedule once “there is no evidence of live virus still present.”

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, those with mild to moderate symptoms of COVID-19 can be contagious for as many as — and should isolate for at least — 10 days.

Trump’s arrival back at the White House raised new questions about how the administration was going to protect other officials from a disease that remains rampant in the president’s body. Press secretary Kayleigh McEnany announced she had tested positive for the virus Monday morning and was entering quarantine.

There were also lingering questions about potential long-term effects to the president — and even when he first came down with the virus.

Conley repeatedly declined to share results of medical scans of Trump’s lungs, saying he was not at liberty to discuss the information because Trump did not waive doctor-patient confidentiality on the subject. COVID-19 has been known to cause significant damage to the lungs of some patients. Conley also declined to share the date of Trump’s most recent negative test for the virus — a critical point for contact tracing and understanding where Trump was in the course of the disease.

At the hospital, doctors revealed that his blood oxygen level had dropped suddenly twice in recent days and that they gave him a steroid typically only recommended for the very sick.

Trump left the hospital after receiving a fourth dose of the antiviral drug remdesivir Monday evening, Conley said. He will receive the fifth and final dose Tuesday at the White House.

Vice President Mike Pence returned to the campaign trail moments after Trump announced he would soon leave the hospital. The vice president boarded Air Force Two to fly to Salt Lake City, where he is to face off against Democratic vice presidential nominee Sen. Kamala Harris on Wednesday.

President continues recovery, compares COVID to flu

SALINA —Law enforcement authorities are investigating a Kansas man for alleged DUI after a crash into a home in Salina.

Just before 4:30p.m. Monday, a 2003 Ford Escape driven by Juan Galvan, 35, Salina, was westbound in the 800 Block of Merrily Drive in Salina, according to Salina Police Captain Paul Forrester.&nbsp; The car struck the curb and then crashed into a home.

EMS transported Galvan to Salina Regional Health Center for treatment of minor head and neck injuries from the airbag deployment. Nobody inside the home was injured. However, the home sustained major damage and the city building inspector was called to the scene, according to Forrester.

Following his trip the hospital, police booked Galvan on requested charges that include,&nbsp;Driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol; 2nd conviction;(evidence of blood/breath .08+) Possession of marijuana, Possession of drug paraphernalia and Improper driving on laned roadway, according to Forrester.&nbsp; Police did release a damage estimate on the home.

Just after 11:30a.m. Saturday, police responded to a call for service at a home in the 300 Block of SW Polk for a check welfare, according to&nbsp;LT Jerry Monasmith.

On arrival, officers found 38-year-old Christopher McMillon with what appeared to be a gunshot wound. He was pronounced deceased at the scene.&nbsp;

As a result of the investigation, police arrested Moran on Monday, according to police spokesperson Gretchen Spiker.&nbsp; Moran is being held on requested charges of first-degree murder and aggravated robbery. The crime is Topeka's 22nd homicide of 2020, according to Spiker.

Kansas woman accused of murder during weekend robbery

NEW YORK (AP) —The top U.S. public health agency said Monday that the coronavirus can spread more than 6 feet through the air, especially in poorly ventilated and enclosed spaces. But agency officials maintained that such spread is uncommon and current social distancing guidelines still make sense.

However, several experts faulted the updated Centers for Disease Control and Prevention guidance. They said the virus can spread more easily than the CDC seems to be indicating, and suggested that the public should wear masks even in prolonged outdoor gatherings when they are more than 6 feet apart.

The virus “is traveling through the air and there is no bright line. You’re not safe beyond 6 feet. You can’t take your mask off at 6 feet,” said Dr. Donald Milton of the University of Maryland School of Public Health.

For months, the CDC has said that the virus spreads mainly through small airborne droplets when an infected person coughs or sneezes. Most CDC guidance about social distancing is built around that idea, saying that 6 feet is a safe buffer between people who are not wearing masks.

In interviews, CDC officials have also acknowledged growing evidence that the virus can sometimes spread on even smaller particles called aerosols that spread over a wider area.

In the update posted on its website, the agency again acknowledged recent research showing people with COVID-19 infected others who were more than 6 feet away or shortly after an infected person left an area. CDC officials called those ”limited, uncommon circumstances.”

In those cases, spread occurred in poorly ventilated and enclosed spaces where people were doing activities that caused heavier breathing, like singing or exercise, CDC officials said.

1 dead, 1 arrested following stabbing, KHP chase

TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) — Kansas expects to receive 870,000 rapid COVID-19 tests from the federal government over the next three months to boost testing in potential hot spots, Gov. Laura Kelly said Monday.

Kelly made the announcement as the state saw a record increase in coronavirus-related hospitalizations. She said the new tests are crucial for a new statewide policy of more testing of people without virus symptoms in areas with high infection rates and increasing routine testing in schools, nursing homes and prisons.

The state already has received its first 57,000 tests, Kelly said.

Kansas saw an average of more than 523.56 new confirmed and probable coronavirus cases a day in August and September, and the total now approaches 63,000 for the pandemic. The state Department of Health and Environment also reported Monday that Kansas has had 3,036 people hospitalized because of the virus, including 53 since Friday. The state averaged 26.29 new hospitalizations a day for the seven days ending Monday, 10% more than the previous record of 23.86 for the seven days ending Friday.

“I think it makes even more important — makes clear the importance of — everyone doing their part to stop the spread,” Kelly said during a Statehouse news conference. “We’ve been on a plateau now for quite a while, where, you know, we’re averaging over 500 cases, new cases, per day. You know, that’s not sustainable.”

President Donald Trump&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/election-2020-virus-outbreak-donald-trump-archive-elections-7ad94115ac126ce1eb7a38bee6c5eedf">announced last week</a>&nbsp;that 100 million rapid COVID-19 tests from Abbott Laboratories would be shipped to states and urged them to use them to reopen schools. The company’s rapid test delivers results in about 15 minutes.

Trump’s announcement came only days before he tested positive for the coronavirus himself. After several days of treatment at a military hospital,&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/virus-outbreak-donald-trump-archive-d39bd670e8a280b6283abcdfc91d4794">the president tweeted&nbsp;</a>Monday, “Feeling really good! Don’t be afraid of Covid. Don’t let it dominate your life. ... I feel better than I did 20 years ago!”

Kelly has spent months warning Kansas residents that the coronavirus is potentially dangerous and far more serious than the flu. The Democratic governor has been forced by the Republican-controlled Legislature to accept local officials’ control over mandating mask wearing, restricting businesses and public gatherings and deciding when K-12 schools would reopen.

The governor declined Monday to respond to Trump’s remarks after discussing how the state would use its new tests.

“We know that we’re going to target our high-risk areas,” Kelly said. “We’ll start with schools.”

The state health department reported that Kansas saw 1,597 new confirmed and probable coronavirus cases since Friday, an increase of 2.5%, bringing the total cases to 62,708. The number of coronavirus cases is thought to be higher because people can be infected without feeling ill and because of limited testing early in the pandemic.

The department also reported eight new COVID-19-related deaths since Friday, bringing the total to 706. Deaths have continued to represent about 1.1% of the total number of reported cases.

About 40 educators, parents and others on Monday protested the decision by the Lawrence School Board last week to shift to a hybrid learning model. The school had begun the year with remote learning.

Lawrence teachers and paraeducators held a “remote teach-in” in front of the district’s administration offices while also online with their students.

Hannah Allison, chair of the Paraeducators Union of Lawrence, said the group wants to extend and improve remote learning and not go to a hybrid model because the workload is “so much that we wouldn’t be able to do it and we wouldn’t be able to care for our own children at home.”

The group is asking to extend and improve remote learning so they have time to go back to school safely, she said.

“We — as paraeducators and teachers and students and parents — we believe that the people closest to the problem are closest to the solution and so we should be a part of crafting a plan for what it looks like to return to in-person,” Allison said.

🎥 Kansas to get 870K COVID-19 tests, sets hospitalization mark

SEDGWICK COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities are investigating an alleged sexual assault and have made an arrest.

Just after 12:30 a.m. Sunday, police responded to a rape report at a residence in the 700 block of South Everett in Wichita, according to officer Kevin Wheeler.

At the home, a 45-year-old woman reported that while walking near Lincoln and Main, a suspect identified as 59-year-old Raul Lopez-Garcia contacted her, forced her into a residence and sexually assaulted her. 

The victim left the residence after the assault and called 911 for help.

Through the investigation, officers determined Lopez-Garcia to be the suspect and learned that the assault occurred in a home in the 100 block of East Lincoln Street, according to Wheeler.

Police arrested Lopez-Garcia and he is being held on requested charges of rape and aggravated kidnapping.

KANSAS CITY, Kan. (AP) — Two people from Kansas City, Kansas, are facing charges in a fatal shooting that happened last week. Lolester Mitchell of Kansas City, Kansas, was found dead inside a home on Tuesday. 

Authorities said Monday that 22-year-old Cooper Allan Beck was charged with intentional murder in the second degree and other crimes. He is jailed on $250,000 bond. 

Meanwhile, 38-year-old Billy Joe Blood is charged with conspiracy interference with a law enforcement officer, intimidation of a witness or victim, and other crimes. She is jailed on $50,000 bond. Police have not disclosed a motive in the killing.

WICHITA, Kan. (AP) — No charges will be filed in the death of a 56-year-old Wichita man who was killed by police last year during an apparent psychotic episode in which he fired 83 rounds from his apartment, the county’s top prosecutor said Monday.

Sedgwick County District Attorney Marc Bennett told reporters via a Zoom news conference that under the circumstances he could not charge the two officers who fired at Fred Burton. The hours-long standoff that began shortly before 2 a.m. on May 23, 2019, when a neighbor in the apartment complex reported hearing what sounded like explosions and found bullet holes in his wall.

Bennett recounted how officers used an armored vehicle to evacuate other occupants of the apartment complex to safety. The SWAT team used a public address system to contact Burton using a “safe word” that Burton had once given the apartment manager so he could distinguish reality from the voices in his head, he said.

During the standoff, Burton came to a sliding door in his apartment, extended a middle finger and exposed himself to officers, according to the report released by the district attorney’s office. Smoke rounds were fired in an attempt to get him out. Burton fired at officers, and two of them returned fire.

Burton was found dead inside the apartment along with a Remington .22 rifle and 83 spent shell casings. More than 30 bullet holes were in the wall. A toxicology report later determined he had methamphetamine in his blood.

“This is another in a long line of situations where people with mental illness and methamphetamine onboard, engage in behavior, engage with the police and it turns out in a very unfortunate manner,” Bennett said.

Under Kansas law, prosecutors would have to establish without a reasonable doubt that the shooting was not in self-defense or in the defense of others — something he could not do under the circumstances of this case, he said.

Prosecutor: No charges in death of mentally ill Kansas man

HUTCHINSON —&nbsp;A political science professor at the University of Kansas says it appears right now that the U.S. Senate race in Kansas is too close to call.

"We have four polls," Patrick Miller said. "The way you interpret polls is, you take the estimates, you stick that margin of error in and in all four polls, there is no clear leader in the poll in the sense that either candidate could actually be ahead, if we factor in the margin of error. At least in three of the four polls, one of the candidates, in one case, Bollier and in two cases Marshall is ahead by a little bit more. Polls are always going to vary."

Just because polls are different doesn't mean they aren't good.

"Good polls of the same race are not going to tell you the same exact thing, even if they are taken on the same day," Miller said. "I would just urge people to look at the body of polling and what that's telling you. That is that, among voters who are decided in the race, you seem to have no clear leader, but there is a chunk who are undecided."

The path to victory may seem theoretically easier for Roger Marshall, due to the Presidential race at the top of the ticket, but there is a path for Barbara Bollier, as well.

"Those individuals who are undecided in the Senate race, there is a chunk of them who are also undecided in the Presidential race," Miller said. "Whether those people are going to vote at all, who knows, whether they are just going to decide at the last minute, who knows, but there are a chunk who are undecided there, up for grabs. Among the undecided voters in the Senate race who know who they are voting for, for President, they do lean about two to one towards Trump."

The key to the race may be how many Trump voters Bollier can pick up or not.

WICHITA – A woman from Los Angeles was sentenced Monday to 18 months in federal prison for transporting 60 pounds of methamphetamine to Kansas, according to U.S. Attorney Stephen McAllister.

Maria Alvarez-Buenrostro, 47, Los Angeles, pleaded guilty to one count of possession with intent to distribute methamphetamine. 

In her plea, she admitted that the Kansas Highway Patrol stopped her car Feb. 12, 2019, in Ellis County. A trooper found the methamphetamine in heat-sealed bags hidden in a real quarter panel and in both rear doors.

WICHITA, Kan. (AP) — The downturn in airline travel amid the coronavirus pandemic could lead to years of decreased flights to fewer destinations and a dramatic drop in building improvements, particularly at smaller airports like the ones in Kansas.

The number of passengers who boarded flights in Wichita this year has dropped 57% compared to 2019, the Kansas News Service&nbsp;<a href="https://www.kmuw.org/post/kansas-airports-face-years-recovery-after-coronavirus-slowdown" target="_blank">reported</a>.

At its lowest point in April — when monthly traffic was down 95% compared to the year before — there was a day when only 63 people flew out of Dwight D. Eisenhower Airport in Wichita. Normally, the airport sees about 2,300 passengers a day, and a lot more during peak travel seasons.

“When no one is traveling, we’re not generating revenue,” said Valerie Wise, air service and business development manager.

Decreased revenue has led to slashed budgets and layoffs. The airport let go its customer courtesy staff. The parking lot operator closed the park-and-ride lot and laid off some drivers. And the Aviator Cafe is still closed.

Before the pandemic, the Wichita airport had seen seven straight years of growth. It added several new destinations and planned to add seven more in the next five years.

But now, the airport hopes just to keep the routes it has. There are currently only 22 daily departures, down from about 35 at the beginning of the year.

For smaller airports losing service is an even bigger existential concern.

Manhattan Regional Airport had three departing and three arriving flights from both Chicago and Dallas-Ft. Worth before the pandemic. It’s now down to two each way from Dallas. Boardings are down 56%.

A $2.1 million grant from the federal CARES Act, intended to offset the economic pain of the pandemic, is keeping the airport afloat for this year.
