NEW ORLEANS (AP) — Chiefs running back Kareem Hunt has understood the value of second chances since fumbling on the first carry of his NFL debut in 2017.

“I thought my career was done and I was like, 'Man, I’m a bust. It’s over with,” Hunt recalled on Tuesday as he fielded questions about playing in his first Super Bowl against the Philadelphia Eagles this Sunday.

As Hunt remembers it, Chiefs coach Andy Reid wasted little time seeking him out on the sideline at New England after his early turnover.

“He was like, ‘Relax, man. Calm down. When we get this ball back, we’re giving it right back to you,'” Hunt said. “So that was another second chance right there. And I’m like, ’Wow, I got to make the most of it.'”

Similarly, Hunt has made the most of his latest stint with the team that drafted him.

Following offseason sports hernia surgery, Hunt entered the 2024 season unsigned and working out on his own at his old high school and recovering from his training sessions in a sauna at the YMCA, unsure whether he'd played his final game in the NFL.

“I didn’t know if the opportunity was going to come or not,” said Hunt, who’d spent his previous five seasons with the Cleveland Browns.

When Isiah Pacheco fractured his fibula in Week 2,&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/chiefs-kansas-city-kareem-hunt-e02c86492982355676e0be2548b95914">Hunt got the call he'd longed to receive</a>&nbsp;— not only from the team that drafted him, but during what has become the Chiefs' bid to become&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/super-bowl-kansas-city-chiefs-philadelphia-eagles-9ebd52bc331d95e3966d2874d3a94467">the first NFL franchise to win three straight Super Bowls</a>.

“When I got that call, I was excited and I told them, ’You won’t regret it,'” Hunt said.

Hunt led the Chiefs in rushing this season with 728 yards and his seven touchdowns also were a team high.

Even after Pacheco returned to the lineup, Hunt remained the Chiefs' primary running back and has since added touchdowns in each of Kansas City's two playoff victories.

"Being able to play football in February is amazing,” Hunt said. “I got to make the most of it now.”

Hunt was one of the NFL’s premier players by his second pro season in 2018, and was helping then first-year starter Patrick Mahomes lead the Chiefs to the playoffs. But in late November of that season, video surfaced that showed Hunt kicking a woman in the hall of a Cleveland hotel.

While no charges were filed after the woman stopped cooperating with authorities, the Chiefs released their young star running back.

Hunt joined the Browns in 2019 and served an eight-game suspension for violating the NFL’s personal-conduct policy. But most of his five seasons in Cleveland — during which he rushed for 2,285 yards and five touchdowns — were far less productive than his first two in Kansas City.

The Chiefs, meanwhile, went to four Super Bowls — winning three — after Hunt was gone.

While he's missed out on those championships, he's back in time to try to help this Chiefs dynasty make history.

“I almost should have never left,” Hunt said. “So, I’m just grateful to be able to come back where it all started and hopefully finish it out and do the unthinkable. And three-peat."

On Wednesday, TMP-Marian senior Austin Gilbert signed an institutional letter of commitment to play baseball at Thomas College in Waterville, Maine. 

Gilbert always dreamed of playing baseball at the collegiate level, but it wasn’t until his sophomore year that it became a reality.

“I always wanted to and always told myself I was going
dedicate myself to getting there, but until about sophomore (or) junior year,
It had never really been real.”

He considered other opportunities but said Thomas
College “just clicked.”

“I will get my master's degree in the four years of
schooling instead of six years,” Gilbert said, “So I won't have to go back for
two extra years after college baseball if I decide to attempt to pursue further
in my athletic career.”

NEW ORLEANS (AP) — The head of the union representing NFL officials called allegations that officiating crews are biased in favor of the Kansas City Chiefs or any other team “insulting and preposterous.”

NFL Referees Association executive director Scott Green&nbsp;<a href="https://www.nflra.com/_files/ugd/c2b7be_7e86fdaf0cb84c1aa58f4ebb3e2a6052.pdf">released a statement</a>&nbsp;on Tuesday thanking&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/super-bowl-2025-goodell-opening-night-46e0272df9f293bb7614c6dbb8affbe4">Commissioner Roger Goodell</a>&nbsp;for dismissing the allegations and responding to “conspiracy theories” on social media about favoritism to the Chiefs.

“Commissioner Goodell’s comments that it is ‘ridiculous’ to presume that NFL officials are not doing everything possible to make the right call on every play is spot on,” Green said. “Officiating crews do not work the same team more than twice each regular season. It is insulting and preposterous to hear conspiracy theories that somehow 17 officiating crews consisting of 138 officials are colluding to assist one team.”

A handful of high-profile calls in the playoffs that have gone in Kansas City's favor have fueled the theories of favoritism, with Houston getting penalized for two illegal hits on Patrick Mahomes in the divisional round and Josh Allen being ruled just short of converting a fourth-and-1 sneak in Kansas City’s 32-29 victory over Buffalo in the AFC championship game.

But a deeper look at all penalties shows no signs of systematic bias. The Chiefs have been penalized for 120 more yards than their opponents in the regular season and playoffs since the start of the 2022 playoffs.

Kansas City has also benefited from 10 fewer first downs by penalty on third or fourth down in that span and has had only a small edge in penalty-yard differential in the fourth quarter or overtime of close games.

“There are many things that fans can worry about over a 17-game season, such as coaching decisions, player injuries, the weather and, yes, even close calls on incredible plays made by incredible athletes,” Green said. “But you can rest assured that on every single down, NFL officials, both on the field and in the replay booth, are doing everything humanly possible to officiate every play correctly."

<a href="https://newsroom.ap.org/home/search/?query=byline:%22JOSH%20DUBOW%22&amp;mediaType=text&amp;st=keyword&amp;sortOrder=newest"></a>NEW ORLEANS (AP) — Coach Andy Reid doesn't plan to leave the Kansas City sideline any time soon.

As Reid prepares the Chiefs for their fifth Super Bowl appearance in six seasons, the 66-year-old put to rest any talk that he was ready to hang it up if Kansas City wins a third straight title.

“Yes, I’ll be back,” Reid said Tuesday.

Chiefs owner Clark Hunt hopes Reid has many years left on the sideline.

“I don't have a sense that he’s remotely close to wanting to be done,” he told Kansas City-area reporters. “I think he’s always said he’ll know when the time is right and I’m sure he’ll share with me before he shares with everyone else — at least, I hope so. I don't sense he’s anywhere close to being done.”

Reid has a chance to become one of the NFL's most accomplished coaches. A win on Sunday would make him the third coach with at least four Super Bowl titles along with Bill Belichick (six) and Chuck Noll (four).

Reid also ranks fourth all time with 301 wins in the regular season and playoffs and has a chance to break Don Shula's record of 347 wins. Reid said none of that is what motivates him to keep coaching.

“That’s not part of it,” he said. “I just enjoy teaching. I don’t get caught up much in the stats or the records. I enjoy being around the guys. I enjoy football, the game. You can’t put in the hours we do and not enjoy it. I love the game.”

After N’Guessan's free throws, Alston Mason made two at the stripe to get Arizona State within 71-70 with 41.7 left. Dug McDaniel missed a 3-pointer for Kansas State and Arizona State guard BJ Freeman grabbed the defensive rebound before racing the other way.

Freeman had it poked away but it ended up in the hands of Jayden Quaintance, who was fouled on a dunk attempt with 4.1 left. Quaintance, the youngest player in Division I, hit the back iron on both free throws and McDaniel secured the rebound and passed it ahead to run out the clock.

Kansas State (11-11, 5-6 Big 12 Conference) has won four straight games for the first time this season.

Max Jones scored 10 of his 15 points in the first half for Kansas State. Brendan Hausen added 12 points, and Coleman Hawkins had 11 points, six rebounds, and seven assists.

Mason led Arizona State (12-10, 3-8) with 20 points. Basheer Jihad added 15, Freeman had 14 and Quaintance finished with 10 rebounds to go with three points. Adam Miller received a Flagrant 2 foul with 7:54 left in the second half after an interaction with McDaniel.

Arizona State started the game on a 15-0 run before Kansas State closed the half on a 22-6 run to take a 35-32 lead on a 3-pointer by Jones. The Wildcats also stated the second half on a 13-3 run to extend it to 48-35 lead as Arizona State was just 1 of 12 from the field spanning the halftime break.

Kansas State returns home to play No. 16 Kansas on Saturday. Arizona State plays at Oklahoma State on Sunday.

HAYS - Hays High played their first home games since December 13, 2024 as they hosted Sunrise Christian Academy on Tuesday.

GIRLS:&nbsp;#4 Hays 64, Sunrise 43 Hays High outscored Sunrise by ten in the fourth quarter helping the Indians win 64-43.

A 9-0 first quarter run by Hays turned a two point deficit into the Indians first lead of the game at 11-4. A lead they would never give back. Hays led by as many as eight in the first frame before the Buffaloes knocked in a basket to beat the buzzer at 19-13.

The Indians lead grew to double digits in the second quarter and was at a high of 12 at halftime 32-20.

Sunrise got as close as five points in the third quarter at 34-29. The Indians went on an 11-3 run to secure a 13 point lead. The lead in double figures 45-34 heading to the fourth quarter.

The Indians outscored the Buffaloes 19-9 in the fourth quarter for the 64-43 victory. Hays knocked down 12 of 13 free throws in the contest.

Hays(14-0) resumes Western Athletic Conference play on Friday by hosting Dodge City. Sunrise Christian(16-2) loses for just the second time.

BOYS:&nbsp;Sunrise 59, Hays 55 Hays couldn't overcome a 16-point third quarter deficit as they fall to Sunrise 59-55.

The Indians led 9-5 in the first quarter and had the ball twice but couldn't extend the lead. Instead, Hays went without a field goal for the 4:30. The basket that broke the drought for the Indians gave them the lead at 12-10 early in the second quarter.

Sunrise made their first run of the game scoring the next nine points and grabbing the lead at 19-12. The Buffaloes outscored Hays 17-7 in the second for a 27-17 lead at halftime.

Sunrise pushed their edge to a sixteen point margin midway through the third quarter with a 12-6 run. Hays trailed 39-23 when they started to chip away at the lead. The Indians closed the third quarter on a 10-3 run and extended it to a 17-3 run with the first seven points of the fourth quarter. That run brought Hays within two points at 42-40. Sunrise answered right back with one of their eleven three pointers.&nbsp;

The Indians again pulled within two points at 45-43 but had a breakaway layup blocked that would have tied the game.

Hays again got within two points at 51-49 on a pair of free throws with 2:39 remaining. The Buffaloes again had the answer as they scored back to back field goals and led 55-49. The final two point deficit came at 57-55 with twenty second remaining but Sunrise hit a pair of free throws for the final of 59-55.

Sunrise Christian (18-3) came into the game shooting 26-percent on three but made 11 of their 25 attempts for 44-percent in the game.

🏀 Hays High splits with Sunrise; girls remain undefeated

HAYS – The TMP-Marian Monarchs returned to Mid-Continent
League play Tuesday night with a sweep of the Trego Golden Eagles at Al
Billinger Fieldhouse in Hays.

GIRLS: TMP 55, Trego 28 The TMP-M Lady Monarchs (8-6, 3-1 MCL) outscored the Trego
Golden Eagles (7-7, 2-3 MCL) 25-10 in the first half and never trailed on their
way to a 55-28 victory.

The Monarchs jumped out to an early 10-5 lead through the
first quarter. Gracyn Schippers scored six points, and Brooke Koenigsman added
four more.

Claire Schippers connected on four three-pointers in the
second quarter as the Monarchs extended their lead to 25-10 lead at halftime.

After leading 38-21 at the end of three quarters, the
Monarchs opened the fourth quarter on a 13-0 run to go up by 30 points and with
the running clock TMP claimed the 55-28 victory.

Brooke Koenigsman led all scorers with 19 points, and Claire
Schippers added 12 points.

BOYS: TMP 67, Trego 51 The TMP boys used a 24-7 second-half run and rallied from
down 10 in the first half to beat the Trego Golden Eagles 67-51 on Tuesday.

After falling behind 3-0, TMP (7-7, 3-1 MCL) answered with a
10-2 and led 10-5 with less than four minutes left in the opening quarter, but
Trego finished the first quarter on an 11-0 run for a 16-10 lead through
one-quarter of play.

The Golden Eagles (7-7, 3-2) built their largest game lead,
31-21, with just seconds to play in the first half.

TMP’s Jacob Seib scored a driving layup to close out the
first half for a 31-23 halftime lead for the Golden Eagles.

Seib scored the first field goal of the second half and
sparked the Monarchs 24-7 run over the first six minutes of the third quarter as
TMP took a 47-38 lead.

Ty Schmeidler and Jacob Seib each scored six points during
the run.

In the fourth quarter, Grant Nehls scored eight of his
game-high 21 points, helping the Monarchs to the 67-51 victory. Ty Schmeidler added
14 points and Jacob Seib added points.

TMP will travel to Salina Thursday to take on the Sacred
Heart Knights.

🏀 Monarchs split MCL doubleheader with Trego

For the
second week-in-a-row, the Hays High girls wrestling team dropped a spot in the Kansas
Wrestling Coaches Association 5A rankings. The Indians are fifth in this week’s
poll released late Tuesday afternoon.

Shawnee
Heights remains No. 1 with Basehor-Linwood second, Kapaun Mt. Carmel third and
Newton fourth.

The Indians
continue to have six wrestlers ranked with no change from last week. Sophomore
Eleanor Stoffel remains second at 190, senior Tionna Napue second at 135, sophomore
Timber Lovewell third at 145, junior Lexie Barnett third at 155, sophomore Kenlee
Vehige fourth at 120 and sophomore Emersyn Copper sixth at 100.

Dalton
Meyers remains third at 175 and Johnny Rigler fourth at 190 for the Hays High boys.

🏀🎥 Hays High hosts Sunrise Christian

KANSAS CITY, Mo. - The Fort Hays State men's track and field team had a student-athlete earn the MIAA Field Athlete of the Week honor for a fourth time this season, with Nolan Churchman&nbsp;picking up the most recent honor announced Tuesday.

Churchman moved to third on the NCAA Division II national performance list with a total of 5,324 points in the heptathlon at the Washburn Open last weekend (Jan. 31-Feb. 1), placing first at the event. The senior collected over 800 points in three disciplines, including 868 points in the 60m dash with a time of 7.04, 813 points with a personal-best clearance of 15-4.25 in the pole vault and 804 points in the 60m hurdles with a time of 8.74. His total is the best performance in the heptathlon by an MIAA competitor this season.

This is the second time Churchman has been named MIAA Field Athlete of the Week, with the Saint George, Kan. native also earning the distinction in December of 2021.Fort Hays State is the only school to receive a field weekly honor from the conference office after pole vaulter Jacob Clark&nbsp;received the first three recognitions of the season.

The Tigers will send a small number of pole vaulters to the Steve Miller Invitational in Manhattan, Kan. this Friday before the rest of the team returns to action next weekend at the 10th Annual Russ Jewett Indoor Gorilla Classic in Pittsburg, Kan.&nbsp;&nbsp;

HAYS, Kan. - The Fort Hays State baseball team has shifted its schedule for the weekend due to forecasted low temperatures, announced Tuesday .

The Tigers and East Central will now battle in a pair of doubleheaders beginning Friday at 1 p.m. before concluding the series on Saturday beginning at noon.

Fort Hays State is 2-2 on the year, while East Central is 0-3 so far this season with a game against Rogers State scheduled for this afternoon. FHSU is 4-4 all-time against ECU, with all eight of those games being played in Oklahoma. This is East Central's first trip to Hays in program history.&nbsp;&nbsp;

⚾ Tigers alter weekend schedule

The Fort Hays State women's basketball team held steady at No. 8 in this week's WBCA Division II Coaches Poll while moving up five spots to No. 17 in the latest release of the D2CSC Media Poll, both released Tuesday.

Now 18-2 on the year, Fort Hays State accumulated 393 points in the voting process, 40 points behind eighth-ranked Texas-Tyler. The top eight spots in the poll remained unchanged from last week.

This is the fifth time in program history that the Tigers have been ranked No. 8 in the coaches poll. The Tigers are now 6-0 when ranked eighth in the country, including a 4-0 record in home games.

Fort Hays State is 175-45 all-time when ranked in the coaches poll, including a 122-26 mark when ranked inside the top 10. The Tigers have now been listed in the poll 115 times, including 75 appearances in the top 10.

The Tigers climbed five spots in the media poll after moving from fourth to third in the D2CSC Central Region Rankings. FHSU is one of four teams in the region with only two losses on the year, joined by Pittsburg State, Concordia-St. Paul and Southwest Minnesota State.

Pittsburg State remains the only other MIAA program recognized in the national polls, with the Gorillas holding steady at No. 6 in the coaches poll and No. 5 in the media ranks.

The Tigers will return to Gross Memorial Coliseum for the first time in nearly three weeks on Thursday when FHSU hosts Northeastern State beginning at 5:30 p.m.
