MANHATTAN, Kan.&nbsp;– Kansas State senior cornerback&nbsp;<a href="https://www.kstatesports.com/sports/football/roster/julius-brents/8508">Julius Brents</a>&nbsp;is the second Wildcat in as many days to be drafted by his hometown team as he was selected with the 13th&nbsp;pick of the second round – No. 44 overall – by the Indianapolis Colts on Friday during the 2023 NFL Draft outside Union Station in Kansas City, Missouri.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The pick came one night after Kansas City native&nbsp;<a href="https://www.kstatesports.com/sports/football/roster/felix-anudike-uzomah/8503">Felix Anudike-Uzomah</a>&nbsp;was taken in the first round by the Chiefs. It is the first time in school history two Wildcats were selected within the first 44 picks of an NFL Draft. Additionally, it is the third time in school history that two Wildcats were selected within the first two rounds of a draft. The other two times were 2003 when Terence Newman (first round – Dallas) and Terry Pierce (second round – Denver) were taken, and 1997 when Chris Canty (first round – New England) and Kevin Lockett (second round – Kansas City) came off the board. Brents became the fifth K-State player ever selected by the Colts and the first since tight end Eddy Whitley was selected in the 11th&nbsp;round in 1980 when the organization was located in Baltimore. A product of Warren Central High School in Indianapolis, Brents began his career at Iowa before transferring to K-State prior to the 2021 season. He played in 46 collegiate games with 32 starts between the Hawkeyes and Wildcats, which included starts in all 27 games over his two-year stint in Manhattan. 🏈 K-State's Brents selected by Colts on day two of NFL draft

The Kansas City Chiefs addressed the offensive line by selecting Oklahoma offensive lineman Wanya Morris in the third round of the NFL Draft Friday night. Morris was the 92nd overall pick.

The Chiefs traded up with Cincinnati for the pick, giving away the 95th pick to the Bengals.

Morris was a five-star recruit and made the SEC All-Freshman Team as a 12-game starter at left tackle for Tennessee in 2019. He started seven of nine games played in 2020, five at left tackle, two as a blocking tight end.

Morris was a college teammate of Trey Smith - a former Volunteer who's now the Chiefs' starting right guard. Smith was drafted in the sixth round by Kansas City in 2021.

THE 6'5" 307 pound Morris transferred to Oklahoma for the 2021 season, and played in six games as a reserve. He then started eight of nine contests at right tackle in 2022 while missing time with a shoulder injury. He opted out of the team's bowl game to prepare for the draft.

The Chiefs have six picks remaining in the 2023 draft. Rounds 4-7 come up Saturday. The final day of the draft gets started at 11 a.m. central.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Kansas City Chiefs traded up in the second round of the NFL draft&nbsp;to select SMU wide receiver Rashee Rice on Friday night, giving MVP quarterback Patrick Mahomes another target in a rebuilt pass-catching corps.

The Chiefs acquired the 55th pick along with a sixth-round selection from Detroit to move up from the No. 63 pick while kicking in fourth-round and seventh-round choices. That allowed the Super Bowl champions to leap other teams looking for a wide receiver and address one of their biggest holes on the offensive side of the ball.

Rice caught 96 passes for 1,335 yards and 10 touchdowns last season.

The Chiefs lost JuJu Smith-Schuster and fellow wide receiver Mecole Hardman in free agency, and their only notable addition had been Richie James. That means Rice will be counted upon right away to help last year's second-round pick, Skyy Moore, and Kadarius Toney.

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Max Kepler, Jorge Polanco and Jose Miranda homered as the Minnesota Twins stayed hot at the plate with an 8-6 win over the Kansas City Royals on Friday.

Kansas City loaded the bases with two outs in the ninth inning, but Jorge López struck out Nick Pratto on a full-count pitch for his second save.

Salvador Perez had three hits, including a home run, and two RBIs for the Royals. Pratto added three singles and two RBIs, and Edward Olivares doubled twice, tripled and scored three runs.

The Twins have scored 33 runs in their last five games after starting the season in an offensive slump. The three homers gave Minnesota 36 on the season, second-most in the American League behind the Rays.

After the first pitch was delayed two hours by rain, Royals starter Jordan Lyles (0-5) gave up seven runs in four innings.

Minnesota right-hander Pablo López (2-2) struggled for the second straight outing but still pitched into the seventh for the third time in six starts this year. He allowed six earned runs while striking out seven.

In previous outing last Saturday, López gave up five earned runs over four innings in a loss to Washington. It was his first start after the Twins signed him to a $73.5 million, four-year contract.

Polanco's second homer of the year, a three-run shot to right field, put the Twins on top 7-2 in the fourth. He started the season on the injured list with knee soreness, but is hitting .367 (11 for 30) with nine RBIs since making his 2023 debut last Friday.

Kepler led off the bottom of the first with his third homer of the season. Miranda hit his third in three games leading off the fifth.

Miranda's drive gave the Twins an 8-2 lead, but the Royals wouldn't go down quietly. In the sixth, Perez hit a long homer into the bullpen. Olivares then hit a two-out triple and scored on a single by Pratto.

Kansas City added two more runs in the seventh, keyed by Perez's RBI single.

Royals manager Matt Quatraro was ejected for arguing balls and strikes in the eighth. He objected to a called third strike by umpire Jerry Layne with Michael Massey at the plate as the potential go-ahead run.

Michael A. Taylor brought home a run in the fourth for Minnesota with one of the shortest extra-base hits in baseball history. With Joey Gallo on third base and one out, Taylor laid down a perfect squeeze bunt in front of home plate. Perez, the catcher, fielded the bunt, but second baseman Massey was late covering first, forcing Perez to hold the ball.

Taylor then alertly sprinted to second base when he saw it had been left uncovered. The play was scored an RBI double for Taylor on a ball that didn't reach the infield grass.

Twins: RHP Kenta Maeda (triceps strain) will be shut down until his symptoms subside, according to trainer Nick Paparesta. Maeda is expected to be replaced in the roation by RHP Bailey Ober, who was recalled from Triple-A St. Paul and will be activated to face the Royals on Saturday. … RHP Tyler Mahle was diagnosed with a posterior impingement of his right elbow and also won’t resume throwing until the soreness is gone. Minnesota manager Rocco Baldelli said Mahle’s status is day-to-day, while no timetable was given for Maeda’s return.

Royals: RHP Brad Keller (2-2, 3.96 ERA) will face Minnesota on Saturday afternoon. Keller took the loss against the Twins on April 2 in Kansas City but is 2-0 in three road starts this season.

⚾ Tigers bats silenced in series opener at No. 4 Central Missouri

TOPEKA - The Kansas State High School Activities Association has announced that the 2024 state wrestling tournament will be held in Salina.

In a news release, KSHSAA wrestling administrator Mark Lentz said that due to scheduling issues, the 2024 tournament that is normally held at Gross Memorial Coliseum is being moved to the Tony's Pizza Events Center in Salina.

"The KSHSAA completely understands the scheduling situation with Fort Hays State University, as they and the city of Hays have been and continue to be a great partner with the KSHSAA and our member schools."

With the venue change for 2024, the format for the 3-2-1A Boys, 4A Boys and 4-1A Girls will be altered into a three-day tournament format. The tournament will be held on Thursday, February 22 - Saturday, February 24, 2024.

Changes include: - 3 days of competition weigh-in for each division. - 8 mats will be used for the competition on Thursday and Friday. - 4 mats will be used on Saturday for all consolation semifinals and medal matches. - The schedule will be released later. - All wrestlers will wrestle two matches on Thursday. - The number of rounds on Friday will be determined later. - On Saturday, all medal winners will wrestle, leading into 3 mats of championship finals congruently.

🤼‍♂️ 3-2-1A wrestling leaving Hays in 2024

The Fort Hays State men's basketball team announced the signing of a third player this spring.&nbsp;

Kobe Greene is a 6'2" sophomore guard who played the last two seasons at Northeastern Junior College in Sterling, Colorado.

Greene played in 29 games and made 18 starts this past season for former FHSU assistant coach Eddie Trenkle at NJC and averaged 10.1 points and 3.2 rebounds per game. He shot 44.1-percent (71-161) from 3-point range.

Greene joins big man Petar Asceric and guard RJ Crawford who also committed this spring.

KANSAS CITY, Kan. - Cooper Sanders and Jack Weimer both drove in four runs and Greg Hughes pitched a complete game to lead the Hays High baseball to a 14-4 run-rule win over St. Mary's Academy in Friday's seventh place game of the  Butch Foster Memorial Baseball Tournament at Legends Field.

The win snapped the Indians (8-6) five-game losing streak. They finished 1-2 in the tournament hosted by Bonner Springs High School.

After both teams scored a run in the first, Hays blew ip open with an 11 run second. The Indians sent 15 batters to plate and had five singles, a double, four walks, a hit batter along with an error.

Sanders went 3-for-4 from the leadoff spot and Weimer 2-for-2 with a double batting ninth. Will Cadoret also had two hits and like Weimer scored three runs.

Hughes allowed only three hits in the game game called after five innings by run-rule with two of the four runs unearned. He struck out three while walking four.

Hays High will host their own Western Plains Diamond Classic beginning Thursday at HHS.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Kansas City Chiefs picked a hometown boy with the last selection in the first round of the&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/nfl-draft-football-2023-d45256e5f5eb6f6de7b24b65a2996e9c">hometown NFL draft</a>.

The Super Bowl champions bolstered their pass rush Thursday night when they chose Kansas State's Felix Anudike-Uzomah with the 31st overall pick. He was born in Kansas City and became a prep star in the suburb of Lee's Summit, Missouri, before helping the Wildcats to a Big 12 title last season, when he was voted&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/college-football-sports-texas-christian-horned-frogs-sonny-dykes-felix-anudike-0f094630441f8c5e8f752cb5dae1a45c">the league's defensive player of the year</a>.

“I got drafted by literally my favorite team growing up,” Anudike-Uzomah said. “It's definitly a dream come true.”

Anudike-Uzomah fills a big need for the Chiefs, who&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/chiefs-frank-clark-orlando-brown-super-bowl-02ba7e989e9d38be31afed964f1fda48">released Frank Clark</a>&nbsp;not long ago to create some salary cap space.

The Chiefs also used a first-round pick last year on&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/kansas-city-chiefs-nfl-sports-athens-st-joseph-a92f5ef25723916b5644e4e9379f7265">defensive end George Karlaftis</a>, and now they have two young players to anchor their pass rush for years to come. Karlaftis had six sacks while helping the Chiefs win the Super Bowl as a rookie.

“Felix is a heck of a player. He’s also a KC native, so we appreciate that part of it, too,” coach Andy Reid said. “When you’re picking right there at 31, you take the best player available. He was that guy.”

“It’s one thing to get drafted in the NFL," Chiefs general manager Brett Veach added. "To have a local kid get that call on draft night, while the draft is being held in Kansas City, needless to say he was pretty excited.”

Kansas City had been in the spotlight all night before the Chiefs made their pick. The draft was being held for the first time at historic Union Station, where the largest stage complex in its history was erected near the National World War I Museum.

Thousands of fans began arriving nearly 12 hours before Carolina went on the clock with the first pick, and 125,000 packed the area by the time the Chiefs made their pick. And while jerseys representing almost every NFL team were in the crowd, the vast majority were Chiefs jereys that formed a rollicking sea of red as fans awaited their selection.

Earlier in the night, Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes and tight end Travis Kelce had greeted fans by bringing out their latest Lombardi Trophy. But for their selection, two finely dressed gentleman brought out their other two Lombardi trophies before Chiefs owner Clark Hunt carried out the third one and the champions finally made their pick.

At that point, it was anyone’s guess what Veach might do.

The Chiefs were long linked to wide receivers in the first round after losing JuJu Smith-Schuster and Mecole Hardman in free agency, and signing Richie James as the only noteworthy replacement. But beginning with Jaxon Smith-Njigba to the Seahawks at No. 20, four wide receivers were selected in a row, and that left the Chiefs without one with a first-round grade.

Then there was the offensive line, where the Chiefs declined to use the franchise tag on left tackle Orlando Brown Jr. for a second consecutive year and allowed Andrew Wylie to leave as well. The Chiefs signed Jawaan Taylor with the intention of moving him from right tackle to left tackle, but they are still searching for help at the other end of the line.

Oklahoma’s Anton Harrison was a potential fit but he went four spots earlier to Jacksonville.

The other big hole was at defensive end, where the Chiefs signed Charles Omenihu to play alongside Karlaftis but still needed a long-term solution. Nolan Smith would have been an option, but the Georgia standout’s long slide ended when the Eagles — who lost to Kansas City in the Super Bowl — selected him one pick before the Chiefs went on the clock.

So, they pivoted to another pass-rushing option.

Anudike-Uzomah was considered a fringe first-round pick, but the Chiefs saw enough value in him to make the selection, rather than trade out of Round 1 altogether. Anudike-Uzomah joins a group of pass rushers that also includes Mike Danna and Malik Herring, but where there will be ample opportunity to make an immediate impact.

The Chiefs still have nine more draft picks, including second- and third-rounders on Friday night.

“We did have some calls (on trading down),” Veach acknowledged. “You know, it’s a situation where you have a guy that’s clearly the top guy left, and the calls we had, you’re talking mid-40s, that’s a long ways away. So we thought, ‘Let’s not get cute here. There’s a guy we like. Let’s go ahead and make the pick.’ And we're glad we did.”

🏈 Chiefs pick hometown star Felix Anudike-Uzomah of K-State

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Byron Buxton and Carlos Correa homered back-to-back for the Minnesota Twins, who routed the Kansas City Royals 7-1 on Thursday.

Buxton and Correa teed off on Royals veteran right-hander Zack Greinke in the fourth inning. Buxton’s opposite-field shot was a three-run blast over the high wall in right-center field to make it 6-1. Correa followed that up with a line-drive homer into the bullpens in left-center.

Twins starter Tyler Mahle allowed one run — a solo homer by Vinnie Pasquantino in the top of the fourth — but exited after four innings and 66 pitches with right posterior elbow soreness.

Mahle didn't sound too worried after the game, calling it “just inflammation,” but said he didn't know yet whether he'd make his next start.

"No one's really concerned about it," he said. “So just sit back for a few days and let it calm down and it should be fine.”

Reliever Brock Stewart (1-0), who was recalled from Triple-A Rochester on Tuesday, made his Twins debut in replacing Mahle. He pitched two scoreless innings and struck out three batters.

“The guys that have watched him throw at the Triple-A level have been very, very pleased,” manager Rocco Baldelli said. “He's been pretty dominant. He's throwing the ball great.”

Minnesota has now homered in 10 straight games, with a total of 17 during that stretch.

The 39-year-old Greinke fell to 0-4 on the season and his ERA jumped to 6.10 after allowing seven runs on eight hits over 3 2/3 innings. Greinke hasn’t beaten the Twins since April 30, 2014, a span of nine starts. He also is now 1-8 in 11 career starts at Target Field.

“It was unusual. It seemed like a little bit of a lack of command,” Royals manager Matt Quatraro said of Greinke. “The pitch count was elevated. It just didn't seem like he was commanding it as well as he normally does.”

Minnesota scored a run in the first when Trevor Larnach singled to drive in Correa. The Twins plated two more runs in the second off Greinke.

Pasquantino's home run extended his on-base streak to 21 games, tying his career high.

“He seems to do a really good job of compartmentalizing," Quatraro said of Pasquantino. “He leaves the last at-bat behind him, whether it was good or bad, and goes up there and competes on every pitch.”

Minnesota's bullpen combined for five scoreless innings, allowing just one hit. Then Twins closer Jhoan Duran pitched the ninth inning despite a six-run lead.

Baldelli said Duran has an early-morning flight Friday to take care of immigration-related documents, so Minnesota opted to pitch him Thursday to save other relievers for Friday's game.

Before Thursday’s game, the Twins reinstated left-hander Josh Winder from the 15-day injured list and optioned left-hander Brent Headrick to Triple-A St. Paul to make room for Winder on the roster.

Winder has not yet appeared for the Twins this season after missing time with a right shoulder strain. He made five rehab appearances before being reinstated, striking out 11 and walking four in nine innings.

Headrick appeared in three games for the Twins and posted a 3.24 ERA.

Royals: Catcher Salvador Perez remained out of the lineup after getting hit by a pitch Tuesday. Quatraro said Perez has a “bad bruise” but underwent pregame activities.

Twins: Right-hander Kenta Maeda had an MRI on his right elbow, which showed a muscle strain and inflammation. Maeda, who exited Wednesday’s game with an elbow injury after allowing 10 runs in three innings, did not have any structural damage to his elbow. He’ll likely land on the injured list.

RHP Jordan Lyles (0-4, 4.88 ERA) gets the start Friday for Kansas City, while RHP Pablo López (1-2, 3.00) starts for Minnesota. Lyles faced the Twins in his first start of the season, allowing two runs in 5 1/3 innings in a 2-0 loss. Lopez was on the other side of Lyles in that game against the Royals and allowed just two hits in 5 1/3 shutout innings to earn the win.

HAYS – The Hays High softball
team snapped TMP-Marian’s eight-game winning streak with a doubleheader sweep Thursday
at the Bickle-Schmidt Sports Complex. The Indians held on to win game one 11-10
then took game two 10-0.

HHS has now won
six-straight and nine of their last 10 and improved to 10-3. The Monarchs are
now 11-5.

Game 1: Hays
11, TMP-Marian 10 
TMP-Marian scored four runs in the top of the first inning, the Indians
answered with five in the bottom of the first. They then added two in the
second along with single runs in the third and fourth. The Monarchs got a run
in the sixth then five in the top of the sixth but were retired in order in the
seventh.

Dezarae Schmidt and
Ellie Dreiling both had three of the Indians 13 hits. Schmidt had two doubles.
Morgen Berry also had a double and drove in two runs. Riley Dreher had two RBIs
and picked up the complete game victory in the circle. The sophomore allowed five
earned runs on 12 hits with three strikeouts and one walk.

Brooke Koeningsman led
the Monarchs with two home runs, a double and four RBIs. She hit a solo homer
in the fifth and three-run blast in the sixth.

Teagan Gottschalk went
the distance in the circle and took the loss allowing 11 runs (eight earned) on
12 hits with one strikeout and four walks.

Aubree Thomas pitched a five-inning no-hitter and the Indians hit three home
runs in the run-rule victory.

Morgen Berry, Ellie

second. Berry and Riley Dreher both went 3-for-3 and both drove in two runs. Ashlyn

Clark missed a top-10
finish by one stroke. Blake Buckles and Ashton Bickle both had rounds of 88 and
finished 14th and 15th respectively. Trey Oakley shot a 91 and finished 19th.

Shook won the individual title with 4-under-par 68. Dodge City’s Aiden Robinson

Rader was a model of consistency for the Tigers all season, posting a stroke average of 75.21 in intercollegiate competition, the lowest for a Tiger since 2018-19. ⛳ FHSU's Rader earns spot on All-MIAA team

KANSAS CITY, Mo.&nbsp;– The Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association announced its postseason awards and All-MIAA team for the 2022-23 men’s golf season on Thursday. Missouri Southern State’s Tradgon McCrae was named the MIAA Golfer of the Year.

McCrae&nbsp;finished at the top of the 2022-23 MIAA Designated Standings to be crowned the Golfer of the Year. The senior from Plainville, Kan. who golfed at Hays High School competed in three of the Association’s four designated events and placed in the top-five in each of them. McCrae captured the individual title at the 24th Annual NSU Golf Classic, tied for fifth at the Broncho Invitational and was the runner-up at the 2023 MIAA Championship. He led the Lions to a MIAA regular season, a MIAA tournament title and leads all MIAA golfers with a season average of 71.7.

33rd McGuire Scholarship Scramble postponed to Sept. 1

JOPLIN, Mo. - MIAA Women's Golfer of the Year and Fort Hays State junior Morgan Brasser&nbsp;added another trophy to the shelf this week, placing third at the 2023 MIAA Championships to earn her first All-Tournament honor. As a team, the Tigers finished 11th at Eagle Creek Golf Club, a par-72, 5,800-yard layout. Brasser opened the week with an 8-over 80 on Monday in a round that featured the only eagle of the day. She sat in a tie for 13th after the opening 18 holes, seven back of first place. The Andale, Kan. native turned things around and fired a 2-over 74 in round two, good for the second-best round of the day. She entered the final round in a tie for fifth place, still seven back of the leader. The three-time All-MIAA selection then finished the week with the low round of the tournament, carding three birdies and three bogeys to turn in an even-par 72. The result vaulted her into third place at 10-over 226, two shots back of the ultimate champion. Brasser played nine of the 54 holes in under par, tied for second-most in the field. She carded eight birdies to go along with her first-round eagle. She had finished inside the top 10 at each of the last two MIAA Championships, but this is her first top-five finish at the league meet.

Shauna Lee was also in a tie for 13th following the opening round, with the sophomore firing a round of 8-over 80 on Monday. She followed that up with rounds of 81 and 84 in rounds two and three, finishing in 27th place at 29-over 245.

Aliyah North&nbsp;turned in rounds of 87, 78 and 89 to finish at 38-over 254, good for 35th place, while Lexi Rider finished 51st (63-over 279) after rounds of 90, 92 and 92. The Tigers were in ninth after round one and in eighth place following round two, but slipped two spots to finish the week in 10th place. Central Missouri (72-over 936) held on down the stretch to take the team title, defeating Rogers State (75-over 939) by three shots. Northwest Missouri State's Paige Hoffman took the individual title at 8-over 224 after rounds of 73, 74 and 77. The Tigers will see if any of their players are selected for competition in the Central Super Regional when the full field is released on Monday.&nbsp;&nbsp;

As a team, the Tigers finished 11th at Eagle Creek Golf Club, a par-72, 5,800-yard layout. Brasser opened the week with an 8-over 80 on Monday in a round that featured the only eagle of the day. She sat in a tie for 13th after the opening 18 holes, seven back of first place. The Andale, Kan. native turned things around and fired a 2-over 74 in round two, good for the second-best round of the day. She entered the final round in a tie for fifth place, still seven back of the leader. The three-time All-MIAA selection then finished the week with the low round of the tournament, carding three birdies and three bogeys to turn in an even-par 72. The result vaulted her into third place at 10-over 226, two shots back of the ultimate champion. Brasser played nine of the 54 holes in under par, tied for second-most in the field. She carded eight birdies to go along with her first-round eagle. She had finished inside the top 10 at each of the last two MIAA Championships, but this is her first top-five finish at the league meet.Shauna Lee was also in a tie for 13th following the opening round, with the sophomore firing a round of 8-over 80 on Monday. She followed that up with rounds of 81 and 84 in rounds two and three, finishing in 27th place at 29-over 245.Aliyah North&nbsp;turned in rounds of 87, 78 and 89 to finish at 38-over 254, good for 35th place, while Lexi Rider finished 51st (63-over 279) after rounds of 90, 92 and 92. The Tigers were in ninth after round one and in eighth place following round two, but slipped two spots to finish the week in 10th place. Central Missouri (72-over 936) held on down the stretch to take the team title, defeating Rogers State (75-over 939) by three shots. Northwest Missouri State's Paige Hoffman took the individual title at 8-over 224 after rounds of 73, 74 and 77. The Tigers will see if any of their players are selected for competition in the Central Super Regional when the full field is released on Monday.&nbsp;&nbsp;

PHOENIX (AP) — Manager Torey Lovullo admitted the Arizona Diamondbacks might have had a little hangover on Wednesday following a frustrating one-run loss.

Sending Zac Gallen to the mound cleared those bad feelings up in a hurry.

Gallen struck out 12 over 6 1/3 innings and stretched his scoreless streak to 28 innings, leading the Diamondbacks over the Kansas City Royals 2-0.

“It's always nice knowing Zac is stepping on the mound for us,” Lovullo said. “He sets an unbelieveable tone for us, goes 6 1/3, no runs, allows us to get ahead and stay ahead.”

Arizona took two of three games from the Royals and finished a 3-4 homestand.

Gallen (4-1) gave up four hits and walked none. He struck out six straight batters in the fourth and fifth innings, one shy of the franchise record accomplished by Randy Johnson and Curt Schilling, both in 2001.

The right-hander — who finished fifth in the NL Cy Young Award voting last season — hasn't given up a run since April 4 against San Diego. He's no stranger to long scoreless streaks as the D-backs just celebrated his 44 1/3 inning scoreless streak from 2022 with a bobblehead giveaway last weekend.

“Would you believe me if I said I didn't feel great?” Gallen said. “You know the cliché saying — you have your best stuff maybe five times (in a season), so the other 20 times, you've got to make it up.”

Even without his best stuff, Gallen's only minor trouble came in the first inning when Vinnie Pasquantino and MJ Melendez singled with one out. Gallen struck out Edward Olivares and Michael Massey to end the threat.

Miguel Castro handled the eighth and Andrew Chafin threw the ninth for his fourth save in five chances. The first two Royals batters reached base on Chafin, but the lefty retired the next three, including Freddy Fermin on a strikeout to end the game.

Arizona has pitched four shutouts. Kansas City has been blanked six times.

Royals manager Matt Quatraro said Gallen's ability to throw four pitches for strikes in any count makes him a tough matchup. Pasquantino said Gallen “does what a lot of people try to do and he does it really well.”

“He's playing chess and he's really good at it,” Pasquantino said. “He's setting you up, not just for the next pitch, but for the following pitch after that. He's moving your eyes around and he did a really nice job today.”

The D-backs didn't do much on offense, but with Gallen on the mound, didn't need much. Evan Longoria put Arizona ahead in the fourth on a broken-bat single into left field that scored Emmanuel Rivera.

Rivera, recalled Tuesday from Triple-A, had an RBI single in the fifth.

Ryan Yarbrough (0-3) gave up one run over four innings as Kansas City fell to 6-19.
