Fort Hays State is celebrating the 50th anniversary season of basketball inside Gross Memorial Coliseum this weekend. The women are 566-140 at home over the last 50-plus seasons, good for a winning percentage better than 80 percent. The Tigers have won at least 10 home games in 35 of the last 50 seasons inside the Coliseum. FHSU has only two losing records in a season at home during the GMC era.

The Tigers will celebrate the building of the Coliseum during halftime of the women's game before welcoming back nearly 150 former players for a celebration of 50 years of basketball inside Gross Memorial Coliseum during men's halftime.

Olivia Hollenbeck&nbsp;has made it a habit of scoring early and often of late, with the post player averaging 16.5 points per game over the last three weeks. The Lincoln, Neb. native scored the first 10 points in Thursday's win over Pittsburg State after scoring FHSU's first 12 points before putting up a career-high 30 against Newman two weeks ago.

Now with 1,310 career points, Hollenbeck needs 11 points to tie Chris Biser for 12th all-time in scoring at Fort Hays State.

Katie Wagner&nbsp;is closing in on a pair of milestones, sitting four points away from 1,600 points and one rebound shy of 900. She would be the fifth Tiger to score 1,600 points, the fourth Tiger to grab 900 rebounds, and just the third player in school history to accomplish both feats.

Sydney Golladay&nbsp;distributed four assists in Thursday's win, moving her within one of climbing to eighth all-time at Fort Hays State (Shauna Porter, 331 career assists).

Fort Hays State holds a comfortable lead in the all-time series, 38-21. Fort Hays State has won 25 out of the 30 matchups in Hays, including 10 of the last 11 dating back to 2012. Missouri Southern holds a two-game winning streak over the Tigers. The Lions have won three of the last five meetings after FHSU won seven in a row between 2017 and 2021.

Missouri Southern bounced back with a win at Nebraska-Kearney on Thursday (86-75) after dropping its two previous games. The Lions are 9-3 in true road games this season. MSSU ranks fifth in the conference in both scoring offense (73.3 ppg) and scoring defense (61.5 ppg allowed). They have the second-best field-goal percentage defense, allowing teams to shoot just .365. The Lions lead the conference in both 3-point percentage (.362) and free-throw percentage (.786). Four Lions are scoring in double figures, including Kryslyn Jones (12.2 ppg), Ryan Franklin (11.8 ppg), Kaitlin Hunnicutt (11.2 ppg) and Brandi Hudson (10.8 ppg).&nbsp;&nbsp;

(AP) — The bronze Jackie Robinson cleats that were left behind when a statue of the first player to break Major League Baseball’s color barrier was stolen from a Kansas park are being donated to the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum.

Thieves cut the statue off at its ankles&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/jackie-robinson-baseball-statue-stolen-beea370b17079ad30092affe6aaea3c1" target="_blank">last month,</a>&nbsp;leaving only the feet behind at McAdams Park in Wichita. About 600 children play there in a youth baseball league called League 42. It is named after&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/hub/jackie-robinson" target="_blank">Robinson’</a>&nbsp;s uniform number with the Brooklyn Dodgers, with whom he broke the major leagues’ color barrier in 1947.

Bob Lutz, executive director of the Little League nonprofit that commissioned the sculpture, said the museum in Kansas City, Missouri, was “enthusiastic” about incorporating the cleats into its display on Robinson. 

The display also includes a damaged&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/mlb-sports-travel-georgia-baseball-29523970d7e8dfeedd87aa468b614c49" target="_blank">plaque</a>&nbsp;honoring Robinson. The sign was erected in 2001 outside the birthplace of Robinson near Cairo, Georgia. Community members there discovered last year that someone had shot the plaque multiple times.&nbsp;&nbsp;

“It’s kind of sad in its own way, that we’re building this little shrine of Jackie Robinson stuff that has been defaced or damaged,” said Bob Kendrick, the president of the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum. “But it gives us an opportunity to speak to who he was, the characteristics and value of what he represented, even in the face of adversity. And that message really never goes out of style.”

Robinson played for the Kansas City Monarchs of the Negro Leagues before joining the Brooklyn Dodgers, paving the way for generations of Black American ballplayers. He’s considered not only a sports legend but also&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/mlb-entertainment-sports-los-angeles-baseball-d73b75a6965310bfd087c165e93dc0c6" target="_blank">a civil rights icon</a>. Robinson died in 1972.

Fire crews found burned remnants of his statue five days&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/jackie-robinson-baseball-statue-stolen-45c08bbbd29322c05e6136a67f687459" target="_blank">after the theft</a>&nbsp;while responding to a trash can fire at another park about 7 miles (11.27 kilometers) away. One man was charged this month in the theft. Police said there was no evidence it was a hate-motivated crime, but rather the intent was to sell the metal for scrap.

Donations poured in after the theft, totaling around $300,000, Lutz said. The amount includes a $100,000 gift from Major League Baseball.

Lutz, whose friend, the artist John Parsons, made the statue before his death, said the mold is still viable and anticipated that a replacement can be erected within a matter of months. He estimated it would cost around $45,000 to replace the statue itself. While there also will be security and lighting expenses, that leaves lots of extra money that can be used to enhance some of the league’s programming and facilities, Lutz said.

One man was charged this month in the theft. Police said there was no evidence it was a hate-motivated crime, but rather the intent was to sell the metal for scrap.Donations poured in after the theft, totaling around $300,000, Lutz said. The amount includes a $100,000 gift from Major League Baseball.Lutz, whose friend, the artist John Parsons, made the statue before his death, said the mold is still viable and anticipated that a replacement can be erected within a matter of months. Hays High never trailed in the second half as they pulled away in the fourth quarter for a 42-36 win over Great Bend to finish the WAC schedule undefeated.

Hays scored seven straight points after Great Bend went up 3-0. The Panthers then went on a 7-0 run to take the lead back at 10-7. The Indians knocked in a field goal in the final minute of the first to pull within one point at 10-9.

The game was tied at 12 and 14 in the second quarter. The Panthers were the ones to tie the game at 14 which started another 7-0 run. Hays trailed 19-14 into the final minute before half. Like they have done so many times during their winning streak Hays closed out the quarter strong. A three point play with 40 seconds left and a three pointer as the quarter expired gave the Indians a 20-19 lead.

Hays ends the regular season 13-7, 7-1. Great Bend is 15-5, 6-2.

Jack Weimer scored a game high 18. Trey Oakley added 13. Maddox Spray led four Panthers in double figures with 15.

Both the girls and boys will play Goddard in the first round of 5A sub-state. Hays will host both games on Wednesday with the girls beginning at 6:00.

TOPEKA, Kan. - The Fort Hays State track and field teams opened competition at the 2024 MIAA Indoor Championships on Friday with the women's pentathlon and the first half of the men's heptathlon. Taylor Savolt&nbsp;leads the Tigers In the pentathlon, finishing fourth, achieving a personal best and improving her provisional.

Savolt exhibited her versatility and strength across the board, posting impressive stats in each event. From the 60m hurdles to the long jump and the 800m run, Savolt's consistency and dedication were evident, earning her a total of 3769 points. Following closely behind, Maggie Remsberg&nbsp;secured an exceptional sixth place finish, demonstrating her grit and determination throughout the competition. Remsberg's solid performance in events such as the high jump and 800m run contributed to her total of 3424 points, improving her provisional and achieving a personal best. This mark in the pentathlon climbs her to fifth in school history.

Hadley Williams&nbsp;battled fiercely, securing the 11th spot with a display of tenacity and determination. Despite facing tough competition, Williams showcased her strength in events like the 60m hurdles and long jump, finishing with a total of 2959 points. Ellie Dusselier and Kylin Rudzik&nbsp;also put forth commendable efforts, finishing 12th and 14th. Dusselier's performance in the high jump and 800m run, along with Rudzik's marks in the shot put and hurdles, contributed to the Tigers' overall strong showing.

Strong pitching continued for the Tigers with no earned runs allowed on the day. The Tigers defeated Minnesota Crookston 2-1 and then Maryville 3-1. UMC moved to 2-3 on the season, while MU moved to 2-9 overall.

Fort Hays State 2, Minnesota Crookston 1 Bailey Carlson&nbsp;made her first start of the season in the pitching circle and tossed a complete-game, three-hit gem to turn away Minnesota Crookston. Her only run of the game allowed was unearned due to a Tiger error in the sixth inning. She worked around three walks in the game and struck out one, moving to 1-0 on the season.

Shepard finished the game with two hits to lead the Tigers. The team had six knocks in the game.

The Tigers return to action on Saturday with games against Wayne State (Neb.) and Sioux Falls. Both games will be on Field 1 at the Lake Shawnee complex, beginning at 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.

HAYS, Kan. - The Fort Hays State baseball team dropped Friday's series opener against No. 14 Missouri Southern, 14-10. The Tigers (10-3, 0-1 MIAA) led early in the contest, but five Lion (13-2, 1-0) home runs over the final five innings powered the visitors to victory.

Fort Hays State starting pitcher Cade Flaherty&nbsp;worked around a two-on, one-out jam thanks to a foul pop up and a called third strike, giving the Tigers a chance to strike first in the home half of the inning. Brady Kreutzer&nbsp;reached on an error before Trey DeGarmo smashed his first home run of the season soaring over the wall in left center, putting the home team in front 2-0.

The Tigers allowed a pair of unearned runs in the second before Flaherty again stranded a pair of runners in the third inning. DeGarmo led off the home half of the third with a single before sprinting home on an RBI double from Isaiah Ural, giving the Tigers a 3-2 lead. That lead quickly doubled when Elliott Herrmann&nbsp;followed with an RBI single to left, plating Ural. The Tigers later loaded the bases with one out, but were unable to do any more damage in the inning.

The Lions closed within one with a solo home run in the fourth, but the Tigers managed to grab the run right back in the bottom of the inning when Kreutzer and DeGarmo led off with back-to-back singles. Kreutzer later scored on an RBI groundout from Herrmann.

MSSU's bats came to life in the fifth inning when a two-run home run tied the score at five. The home run kicked off a five-run inning, including another two-run home run that gave the visitors an 8-5 lead. The Tigers went to the bullpen to get out of the inning, with Tanner Vaughn&nbsp;striking out the next two batters to prevent any further damage.

The Tigers manufactured a pair of runs in the bottom of the inning, closing within 8-7. Kyle Morrell&nbsp;worked a leadoff walk before coming in to score on a double down the right-field line from Shaun Gomez. DeGarmo later drove in a run with a bases-loaded groundout before the Lions got out of the inning with a strikeout.

Missouri Southern strung together three weakly-hit singles to score a run in the sixth before adding two more on a bloop single in the seventh. Fort Hays State cut the gap to three, 11-8, when Kreutzer crushed his third home run of the season soaring to left center, but the Lions responded with three solo home runs of their own in the eighth to push the lead to six, 14-8.

Brandon Chavez&nbsp;came on to pitch in the top of the ninth for FHSU, working around a double to keep the Lions off the scoreboard. Fort Hays State got a rally going in the bottom of the ninth when Gomez reached on a dropped third strike. Zane Knox&nbsp;followed with a pinch-hit double before the pair came around to score on a double from DeGarmo. The rally was cut short, however, with MSSU finishing things out with their 14th strikeout of the game.

DeGarmo batted 4-for-6 on the day, driving in five runs and scoring two while finishing a triple shy of the cycle. Kreutzer scored three times, with Gomez adding a pair of runs. Herrmann added two RBI.

Flaherty (2-1) worked 4.1 innings, striking out five while allowing eight runs (six earned) on eight hits and two walks. Vaughn struck out four batters in 3.2 innings of relief, surrendering six runs on eight hits without walking a batter. Chavez worked the final scoreless inning, striking out one and allowing one hit.

The Tigers and Lions will continue their MIAA series Saturday with first pitch set for 1 p.m. from Larks Park.

HAYS, Kan. – Fort Hays State took its first home loss of the season on Thursday night by a score of 67-63 to Pittsburg State. The No. 14/25 ranked Tigers moved to 20-6 overall and 15-5 in the MIAA with the loss, while the Gorillas improved to 16-9 overall and 12-7 in the MIAA.

On a tough night offensively, the Tigers fought an uphill battle all game and inched their way into the lead briefly in the second half before having to chip away again late to have a chance. FHSU had a possession to potentially tie or take the lead in the final seconds, but missed and Pitt State secured its win with a pair of free throws.

The Tigers led only one time in the first half when Bjarni Jonsson&nbsp;hit a 3-point shot, making the score 5-4. The Gorillas followed that with a 9-0 run to take an eight-point lead and the uphill battle had begun. The Gorillas led by as many as 14 in the first half before taking a nine-point lead into the locker room. Pitt State was hot from the field in the first half, hitting 56 percent from the field, while FHSU struggled to just 31.3 percent.

Out of halftime, Pitt State's lead reached 10 twice before the Tigers made their first surge of the second half. The Tigers turned up the defensive pressure and went on a 12-0 run to take a 44-42 lead with 13 minutes to play. However, the Gorillas turned out lucky when the Tigers poked the ball free once more and what looked like the run possibly continuing turned into a scrambling 3-point field goal that the Gorillas hit to take the lead once more. That started a 9-0 run for the Gorillas to put them back up seven with just over 10 minutes to play.

The Tigers trimmed the lead back to three twice before the Gorillas got their lead back to nine with 1:10 to play. A frantic defensive scramble in the final minute allowed the Tigers to have a chance. R.J. Crawford made a layup just inside a minute to trim the lead to seven, the Tigers got a steal and Elijah Nnanabu&nbsp;hit a 3-pointer to make it four with 47 seconds to play. The Tigers created another steal and eventually Kaleb Hammeke&nbsp;got fouled with 17 seconds and hit two free throws to make it a two-point game. Pitt State fumbled the ball away once again on a fast-break opportunity, giving the Tigers a chance with 10 seconds to go. Unfortunately, the Tigers struggled to get a play ran correctly out of a timeout and missed a frantic shot with a second remaining. The Gorillas sealed the game with a pair of free throws.

FHSU had three players reach double figures in scoring, led by Elijah Nnanabu&nbsp;with 15. Jonsson and Traejon Davis&nbsp;each had 10. Nnanabu led the Tigers in rebounds with eight, followed by Jonsson with seven. Kaleb Hammeke dished out a team-high five assists. FHSU finished at just 33.9 percent shooting from the field, it's lowest percentage of the season.

R.J. Forney led four Gorillas in double figures with 17 points. Max Alexander had 16, Jeramy Shaw had 13, and Deshaun English II had a double-double of 11 points and 10 rebounds. Pitt State hit 11 3-point field goals in the game. In all four games the Tigers have surrendered 10 or more 3-point field goals this season, the have lost.

Fort Hays State looks to rebound on Saturday when it plays host to Missouri Southern at 4 p.m.

🏀 Gorillas hand No. 14/25 Tiger men first home loss of the season

HAYS, Kan. - A ferocious defensive effort helped the Fort Hays State women's basketball team defeat Pittsburg State by double figures for a second time this season Thursday evening, 61-49. The Tigers (20-6, 14-6 MIAA) collected their 20th win of the season in the process, extending their NCAA Division II-best active streak of 20-win seasons to 13. In comparison, the next-best active streak in the MIAA is four.

While Pittsburg State (19-6, 13-6 MIAA) is averaging more than 75 points per game this season, the Tigers have now held their in-state rival to its two lowest-scoring outputs of the season (49 points and 53 points).

Olivia Hollenbeck&nbsp;dominated the first five minutes, knocking down her first five shots from the floor and adding a block on defense to help the Tigers to an early 10-9 lead. Jessie Sallach and Megan Earney&nbsp;added 3-pointers later in the quarter, helping FHSU to a season-high 24 points in the first quarter. The Tigers led by double figures late in the quarter before Pittsburg State knocked down a pair of free throws, closing within 24-15 at the end of the frame.

The solid defensive effort continued into the second quarter, with the Tigers holding PSU scoreless for more than five minutes to start the frame. The Gorillas turned the ball over four times while missing their first four shots from the floor. Back-to-back 3-pointers from Emma Ruddle and Kate Dilsaver&nbsp;helped balloon the lead to 15, 30-15.

Brooke Loewe&nbsp;added a layup later in the frame to give the Tigers their biggest lead of the day at 17, 32-15. Pittsburg State bounced back over the final five minutes of the first half, closing within 34-23 at the break.

The Gorillas continued to crawl back early in the third quarter, closing within six with two minutes to go in the quarter before a Sallach jumper pushed the lead back to eight. Earney followed with her second triple of the game, extending the lead back to double figures at the end of the frame, 48-37.The Tigers forced six more turnovers in the final quarter, helping the home team stay in front by 10 or more points the remainder of the contest.

Fort Hays State had only one player score in double figures for just the second time this season, with Hollenbeck leading the way with 17 points. The forward was also dominant on defense, adding three steals and two blocks. Katie Wagner&nbsp;added eight points, nine rebounds, three assists and two steals, while Loewe chipped in nine points, a career-high seven rebounds and team highs in assists (five) and steals (three).

All 10 Tigers to see the floor hit at least one basket in the win.

Fort Hays State shot 40.0 percent from the floor (26-of-65) while forcing 18 PSU turnovers thanks to 11 steals. The Tigers turned the ball over just 12 times and won the rebound battle by four, 36-32.The Tiger bench combined for 29 points in the contest, while Pittsburg State did not have a single substitute record a point.

The Tigers, currently fourth in the MIAA standings with two games to play, will host Missouri Southern Saturday afternoon inside Gross Memorial Coliseum. The Lions sit in second in the conference standings after defeating Nebraska-Kearney on Thursday, one-and-a-half games clear of FHSU. First tip is slated for 2 p.m&nbsp;&nbsp;
