The Hays High Indians girls look to punch their ticket to the 5A state tournament in a 5A West sub-state championship game against Bishop Carroll in Wichita Saturday.

The Lady Indians advanced to the championship game with an overtime win over Goddard Wednesday.

The Golden Eagles got a win over Andover Central Wednesday in the opening round of sub-state.

The game will tipoff at 5:00 p.m. from Bishop Carroll High School.

WACO, Texas (AP) — RayJ Dennis had 19 points and 10 assists, Jayden Nunn scored 18 points with consecutive fastbreak layups in a key run for No. 15 Baylor and the Bears beat seventh-ranked Kansas 82-74 on Saturday, handing the Jayhawks consecutive losses for the first time this season.

Yves Missi added 17 points and fellow freshman Ja'Kobe Walter had 11 for the Bears (21-8, 10-6 Big 12).

Nunn first drove the length of the court with 13:49 left after grabbing a defensive rebound. Then after 7-foot freshman Missi blocked a Kansas shot, Dennis passed ahead to a breaking Nunn for another layup. Those baskets 25 seconds apart ignited a 13-2 run that pushed Baylor's lead from one to 12 with 10 minutes left.

Big 12 scoring leader Kevin McCullar Jr., in his return to the lineup after missing four of the previous five games with a bone bruise in his knee, and Hunter Dickinson had 20 points each for Kansas (21-8, 9-7), which was coming off a&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/kansas-byu-score-40b8e4f3cac4171a55f4a1df95452c20">76-68 loss at home to Big 12 newcomer BYU</a>. Dajuan Harris had 12 points and nine assists.

The Bears had their largest lead before halftime at 31-24 after Dennis made a 3-pointer with 3 1/2 minutes left, but they needed his jumper with 28 seconds left to lead 35-34 at the break.

Kansas went on a 10-2 spurt in between those baskets by Dennis. The Jayhawks' streak started with two nifty assists by Harris, including a give-and-go break with McCullar, who had a steal. Harris' floater put the Jayhawks up 34-33.

Kansas: This is the first time the Jayhawks have had seven conference losses during coach Bill Self's 21 seasons. They have to win one of their next two games (vs. Kansas State and at No. 1 Houston) to extend their record streak of winning conference records to 35 seasons in a row.

Baylor: The Bears are a national-best 32-15 against AP Top 25 opponents the past five seasons, and have won 13 of their last 18 against top 10 teams.

The Jayhawks scored 46 points in the paint, with 22 of those before halftime. The opening stretch included an emphatic two-handed dunk by Dickinson with just under six minutes left that gave him the last of his 10 points before the break. He scored Kansas’ first six points, including consecutive passes from Adams for a dunk and a layup.

Missi opened the scoring with a powerful dunk even with Adams’ hands in his face, and then did a spin move around Dickinson for a layup for their second basket.

Kansas' streak of 55 consecutive AP poll appearances in the top 10 will come to an end Monday, though the Jayhawks still will be ranked. That will leave top-ranked Houston with the longest active streak of top-10 appearances at 36 in a row.

Kansas is back home at Allen Fieldhouse to play Sunflower State rival Kansas State on Tuesday night. That comes after a week after the Jayhawks’ only home loss, to BYU.

Baylor has two games in a three-day stretch, in its home finale Monday night against Texas.

🎧 Eagle Radio, Hull sports broadcast schedule

OAKLEY – The TMP-Marian Monarchs connected on 11 three-pointers
and shot their way back to an eighth straight sub-state championship game Friday
as they defeated the Hill City Ringnecks 62-56 in Oakley.

Both offenses came out on fire in the first quarter with the
two teams combiinng to score 41 points.

TMP connected on five of their first six three-point attempts,
two each by Will Eck and Caden Dinkel while Hill City’s Jaden Nuss scored 12 of
his game-high 27 points in the first quarter as TMP built a 21-20 lead.

The two teams cooled a bit in the second quarter, Hill City
outscored TMP 13-11. 

TMP freshman Ty Schmeidler scored all seven of his points in
that second frame and capped off the quarter with three pointers with a minute
and a half left helping TMP secure a 34-31 halftime lead.

The Monarchs offense struggled in the third quarter, scoring
on just a pair of Dinkel free throws and an Ian Nehls driving layup. Nehls
finished in double-figures for the seventh time this year with 13 points. 

Hill City outscored TMP 11-4 in the quarter and led 42-38
heading into the final quarter.

TMP opened the fourth quarter on a 15-7 run taking a 53-49
lead. Eck connect on two more three pointer field goals in the fourth quarter
and finished with four threes. 

Hill City managed to cut the lead by two points with two minutes
left in the game back the Monarchs made 5-of-7 free throws in the final two
minutes and secured the 62-56 victory.

Caden Dinkel and Will Eck had four three pointers each for
TMP. Dinkel led the Monarchs with 16 points. Eck added 12 points and Ian Nehls
finished with 13 points and six rebounds.

The Monarchs will take on Plainville in the sub-state
championship game at 6:30 p.m. Saturday at Oakley High School.

finished in double-figures for the seventh time this year with 13 points. Hill City outscored TMP 11-4 in the quarter and led 42-38
heading into the final quarter.TMP opened the fourth quarter on a 15-7 run taking a 53-49
lead. Eck connect on two more three pointer field goals in the fourth quarter
and finished with four threes. Hill City managed to cut the lead by two points with two minutes
left in the game back the Monarchs made 5-of-7 free throws in the final two

🏀Monarchs headed back to sub-state title game with win over Hill City

HAYS, Kan. – Fort Hays State closed out its regular season Friday night with an 80-67 win over Nebraska-Kearney at Gross Memorial Coliseum. The Tigers are now 22-6 overall and matched their record for wins in MIAA play at 17-5, the same conference record they posted in 2021-22. The Tigers finished alone in second place in the MIAA standings and will be the No. 2 seed at next week's MIAA Tournament in Kansas City. Nebraska-Kearney closed its season at 5-22 overall and 2-20 in the MIAA.

The Lopers put up a fight early on by hitting a lot of tough shots. The Tigers, however, were finally able to get past them with a late first-half run. The Tigers held the Lopers scoreless for the final three minutes of the opening half and went on an 8-0 burst to hold a nine-point halftime lead.

The Tigers were able to stretch their lead in the second half to as large as 24 with 12:21 to play in the game. UNK had little bursts at times to keep the game from being a runaway. They were able to cut the lead back down to 12 with 5:40 to play, then got the final margin down to 13 by scoring the final 10 points of the game.

Elijah Nnanabu&nbsp;turned in a big performance on Senior Night with 23 points and 10 rebounds for his second double-double of the season. Kaleb Hammeke&nbsp;neared a double-double with 12 points and a team-high eight assists. Hammeke passed Kyler Kinnnamon for fourth on the all-time assists list at FHSU, now with 432. Jahiem Holden&nbsp;also had a big senior night, tying his season high in points with 19. Holden hit a team-high three 3-point field goals.

Nebraska-Kearney had four players reach double figures in scoring, led by Sean Murphy with 17. Taden King had 15, Sean Evans had 13, and D'Aundre Samuels added 10.The 80 points scored by the Tigers was their most in a home game this season. It was only their second time this season reaching 80 in a game.

This is the seventh time in Mark Johnson's coaching tenure that the Tigers have won at least 22 games in a season, while already hitting the 20-win threshold for a 12th&nbsp;time on his watch.

Fort Hays State will play the winner of the No. 7 vs. No. 10 seed matchup in the MIAA Tournament. That game takes place on Wednesday before the winner faces FHSU on Thursday night in the quarterfinals at 8:15 p.m. inside Municipal Auditorium in Kansas City.

HAYS, Kan. - The Fort Hays State women's basketball team wrapped up the regular season with another overtime victory Friday evening (March 1), completing the season sweep of Nebraska-Kearney with a 74-64 win. The Lopers (18-10, 12-10 MIAA) hit a 3-pointer at the buzzer to send things into overtime, but the Tigers (22-6, 16-6 MIAA) outscored the visitors 13-3 in the extra period to earn their second-consecutive overtime win.

It was the first time the Tigers played back-to-back overtime games since January 2011 (1/22 64-60 win at Lincoln, 1/26 75-70 win at Nebraska-Omaha).

The Tigers conclude the regular season with 16 conference wins, enough for FHSU to finish in either a tie for second or a tie for third in the league standings pending results from Saturday. Official seeds for the MIAA Championship Tournament, presented by Southern Bank, will be released Saturday evening after the conclusion of all regular season action.

The Tigers struggled offensively in the first half, hitting just 25.6 from the floor over the first 20 minutes (10-of-39). Thankfully for the fans in black and gold, the Tiger defense took the reins to keep the home team in the game. Fort Hays State forced 11 turnovers in the first half while blocking one shot, limiting the Lopers to a 30-26 lead at halftime. Katie Wagner&nbsp;did the bulk of the work for the Tigers offensively in the first half, scoring 14 points including a pair of 3-pointers.

Fort Hays State figured things out after intermission, hitting nearly 55 percent from the floor over the rest of the contest (17-of-31). The Tiger defense continued to dominate, finishing the game with 11 steals and forcing 22 Loper turnovers. FHSU held its rival to just one field goal over the first eight minutes of the second half, giving the Tigers the opportunity to take control.

Emma Ruddle&nbsp;drilled a 3-pointer midway through the third to pull the Tigers within one, 32-31, before Wagner put the team on top with a jumper one minute later. Jessie Sallach&nbsp;then added back-to-back buckets to push the lead to six, 38-32. Sallach later hit a 3-pointer to push the lead to seven at the end of the third quarter, 43-36.

Nebraska-Kearney scored six-straight points early in the fourth quarter before Sallach responded with another 3-pointer to push the lead back to four, 48-44. UNK answered with another 3-pointer of its own, again trimming the lead to one. The teams traded buckets for the remainder of the contest, with FHSU never leading by more than six but never falling behind as the Tigers always had an answer.

A traditional 3-point play from Wagner and back-to-back buckets from Olivia Hollenbeck&nbsp;helped the Tigers push their lead back to six, 57-51, with three minutes to play. The Lopers followed with consecutive buckets, including a 3-pointer from Meg Burns to close within one.

Hollenbeck hit another layup with 25 seconds to go to put the Tigers back up three, 59-56, before UNK scored a quick two with 12 seconds remaining. Sydney Golladay&nbsp;was then fouled and calmly hit both free throws with six seconds to go, pushing the lead back to three. Burns then threw up a heave from the top of the arc with a hand in her face as time was expiring that managed to find the bottom of the net, leveling the score at 61 after 40 minutes of action.

Both teams missed on their first attempt in overtime before Golladay drilled a 3-pointer to give the Tigers the lead. FHSU got another stop before Hollenbeck scored again in the paint, stretching the lead to five. The Lopers followed with another Burns 3-pointer, but Wagner answered right back with a jumper of her own. The Maize, Kan. native then hit a pair of free throws, pushing the lead to six with two minutes to play, 70-64.

The Tiger defense finished strong, forcing the Lopers to miss their final five shots while forcing a pair of turnovers over the final two minutes of the overtime period. The Tigers were a perfect 9-for-9 from the free-throw line in the fourth quarter and overtime to seal the win.

Fort Hays State scored 21 points off the 22 UNK turnovers, while the Lopers managed just 10 points off eight Tiger turnovers. The Tigers shot a combined 38.6 percent from the floor for the game (27-of-70) while UNK hit 40.3 percent (27-of-67). The Lopers took care of business on the boards as they have all season, outrebounding the Tigers 50-35.

Wagner led all scorers with 26 points, adding six rebounds, three assists and one steal. Hollenbeck scored 18 points and added two steals and one block on defense. Golladay distributed eight assists for the second game in a row, adding seven points and one steal. Sallach contributed 12 points, 10 of which came after halftime, while Brooke Loewe&nbsp;distributed five assists and poked away a career-high four steals.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Rogers State struck first in the bottom of the second by scoring two runs with two outs, taking advantage of two singles and three walks. Tiger starter Cade Flaherty&nbsp;retired the side in order in the second before the Hillcats manufactured another run in the third, going up 3-0. Flaherty then faced the minimum over the next three innings, keeping FHSU within striking distance.

Fort Hays State had runners on base in all but two innings, but the Tigers were unable to get things going until the top of the sixth when Brady Kreutzer&nbsp;started a rally with a leadoff single to left center. Fort Hays State won the first meeting with UNK this season by a score of 57-49. Kaleb Hammeke&nbsp;led the Tigers with 15 points in that contest. The Tigers now have a six-game win streak against the Lopers. UNK's last win in the series was in 2020-21 by four points in Kearney. FHSU has won the last six meetings between the teams in Hays with UNK's last win at Gross Memorial Coliseum occurring back in 2016-17.

Fort Hays State is coming off a 67-65 overtime win over Missouri Southern in Hays last Saturday. The Tigers battled to get the game tied in regulation, then outlasted the Lions in a physical game in overtime.

Nebraska-Kearney enters this game on a 16-game losing streak. UNK's last win was back on December 19 over Bethany College, but the Lopers have dropped 18-straight MIAA games since defeating Missouri Western back on December 7. UNK started conference play 2-1 before dropping 18 straight conference games since. UNK's closest loss since last playing the Tigers on January 20 was a 90-85 loss to Newman in Kearney back on February 10.

Fort Hays State is No. 5 in the latest NCAA Central Region rankings, released on Wednesday (Feb. 28). The Tigers rank fifth in win percentage both in-region and overall against Division II competition this year, and also rank fifth in RPI and performance indicator formulas used in the region rankings. Minnesota State is the frontrunner in the region rankings, followed by Northwest Missouri State, MSU Moorhead, Minnesota Duluth, and Fort Hays State. Minnesota State has just two losses on the season, while NWMSU and MSU Moorhead each have four, and Minnesota Duluth has five. The top four teams in the region rankings all have at least 20 wins against Division II competition this season. FHSU is 18-6 against Division II competition so far this season.

Hammeke continues to lead the Tigers in scoring and assists. He is averaging 13.8 points and 4.1 assists per contest. In the win over Missouri Southern last week, he became just the third player in program history to have at least 1,500 points and 400 assists in their career, joining Raymond Lee and Mark Wilson. Elijah Nnanabu&nbsp;is the team-leader in rebounding at 5.2 per game, followed closely by Hammeke at 5.1 per game.

Nnanabu, Bjarni Jonsson and Jahiem Holden&nbsp;are the three senior that will be recognized immediately following the conclusion of the women's game. Nnanabu and Jonsson were both All-MIAA selections last year and Jonsson is a two-time MIAA All-Defensive Team selection.

Fort Hays State is already a lock for the No. 2 seed in the MIAA Tournament next week. The Tigers will potentially match up against either the No. 7 or No. 10 seed in the quarterfinals on Thursday. It doesn't take much time on the internet to find motivational quotes for athletes. Some of those quotes emphasize that each athlete's journey is their own and not to be compared to others.

Hays High senior Dylan Haselhorst has had a different journey that ultimately landed him an opportunity to play baseball at Barton County Community College next season. It is unlike most.

Haselhorst has played baseball since he was little. Some of the summer time was spent playing baseball with a team from Hays. At the time Haselhort went to school in Kinsley. His freshman year of high school the sport was not offered at Kinsley. The Coyotes added the program his sophomore season.

Prior to starting his junior year the Haselhorst family moved to Hays where Dylan's dad is originally from.&nbsp;

The only problem was that he transferred into a program that had a large senior class and there wasn't an everyday opportunity to play varsity baseball. Haselhorst stayed with it. He played everyday as the junior varsity catcher while learning how to call the game from behind the plate.

So how did Haselhorst end up with an opportunity to play collegiate baseball? Back when he played his only season of baseball at Kinsley, they had a game at Ellinwood. There the Ellinwood coach liked what he saw and gave Haselhorst's name to the Barton coach. The communication started there.

Then during the 2023 summer Dylan made a more concerted effort in his contact with the Cougars. Among other things he sent video of his play during the summer. Eventually the offer came and was accepted.

Haselhorst has yet to play an inning of varsity baseball at Hays High. A decision that Indian head coach Dustin Dreher said was not easy in 2023. As a program they felt like Haselhorst had a better opportunity to develop by being behind the plate every day on junior varsity instead of playing occasionally on the varsity level.

Dreher says that Haselhorst has improved on every aspect of the game and has been a great leader in the first week of practice. This year's baseball team has ten seniors on it. Behind the plate sending signals to the pitcher will be the Barton County Community College baseball signee Dylan Haselhorst.

The Fort Hays State women's basketball team will wrap up the regular season Friday evening when the Tigers host rival Nebraska-Kearney beginning at 5:30 p.m. inside Gross Memorial Coliseum.

The Tigers will recognize five seniors before the contest, including Clary Donica, Sydney Golladay, Olivia Hollenbeck, Emma Ruddle&nbsp;and Jessie Sallach.

Fort Hays State (21-6, 15-6 MIAA) is ranked third in the latest NCAA DII Central Region rankings, released Wednesday. Five other MIAA programs are in the top 10. The Tigers have six wins against regionally ranked teams, while all six of FHSU's losses also came against regionally ranked opponents.

The Tigers have secured a trip to Kansas City, Mo. for the 2024 MIAA Women's Basketball Championship Tournament, presented by Southern Bank. With just one week remaining in the regular season, the Tigers can finish anywhere from second to sixth in the jam-packed MIAA standings.

Fort Hays State has reached the semifinals of the MIAA Tournament six-straight times, the longest active streak in the MIAA. Additionally, the Tigers have played in the semifinals in 10 of the last 11 tournaments, three more than any other women's team during that span (ESU 7, UCM 7).

Fort Hays State won its 10th home game of the season Saturday against Missouri Southern, reaching double figures in home wins for a 36th time during the Gross Memorial Coliseum era.

The balanced offensive attack of the Tigers saw seven players score at least nine points in the 85-81 win over Missouri Southern, with an eighth Tiger adding seven points. Fort Hays State scored a season-high 26 points in transition in the win while limiting the Lions to just two fast-break points.

Now with 905 rebounds in a Tiger uniform, Katie Wagner&nbsp;moved to third on the all-time rebounds list at Fort Hays State over the weekend. The junior is fifth on the all-time points list with 1,609 over the last four years.

In addition, Wagner needs just six steals to move into the top 10 all-time at Fort Hays State, where she would tie Jamie Heiman with 179 steals. The Maize, Kan. native is closing in on the single-season top 10 list in numerous categories, needing 41 points, 57 rebounds or eight rebounds to tie for 10th in each respective category.

Sydney Golladay&nbsp;passed a pair of former Tigers on the all-time assists chart this weekend, climbing to seventh with 338 assists in her time at Fort Hays State.

Olivia Hollenbeck&nbsp;(1,324 points) is now 12th all-time in scoring, needing 19 points to match Kacey Kennett for 11th. She is just five blocks away from moving into second all-time, where she would tie Ashlee Gustin with 166 blocks.

Fort Hays State leads the all-time series, 61-42. The Tigers have played UNK more than any other school in program history and also have more wins against the Lopers than any other team. FHSU snapped a two-game losing streak with a 70-68 road win over the Lopers earlier this season. The teams have alternated two-game winning streaks over the last five years. Nebraska-Kearney has won three in a row in Hays and five of the last seven dating back to 2018.

Nebraska-Kearney is 18-9 on the year after dropping each of its last two contests. The Lopers were listed as under consideration for regional selection last week but were replaced by Northwestern Oklahoma State in the regional ranks this week. The Lopers own the best rebound margin in the MIAA, ranking seventh nationally by outrebounding opponents by an average of 10.0 boards per contest.

Shiloh McCool leads the team in rebounding, ranking first in the MIAA and 36th in the country with 9.3 rebounds per game. Jillian Aschoff leads the conference in assists, averaging 5.9 per night to rank eighth in Division II. UNK has four players that average in double figures in scoring, led by McCool's 13.8 points per game.&nbsp;&nbsp;

OAKLEY – The Smith Center Lady Red closed the fourth quarter
on a 16-4 run as they defeated the TMP Lady Monarchs 46-33 Thursday night in
Oakley, ending TMP’s season in the sub-state semifinals.

Both teams struggled to get their offense going as Smith
Center built a 6-4 first quarter lead.

In the second quarter TMP’s Claire Schippers scored a
driving layup with six minutes left tying the game at 6.

Her sister Gracyn Schippers added five straight with a
three-pointer putting TMP up 11-6. Then on the next TMP possession Claire
connected on her first of three three-pointers putting TMP up 14-6.

After leading by eight, they again matched their largest
lead of the game when Teagan Gottschalk capped off the 12-2 run putting TMP up
16-8 with a field goal in the paint, with just over two minutes left in the first
half.

But it was a lead that TMP could not hang out to.

Smith Center closed out the first half and opened the second
on a 13-0 run to take a 21-16 lead with three and a half minutes left in the
third quarter.

The Lady Red led by four, at 30-26 at the end of the third
quarter.

In the final frame, TMP’s Brooke Koenigsman pulled the
Monarchs within one at a three-point play, at 30-29 with 5:45 left in the game
but that was a close as TMP would get.

Smith Center outscored TMP 16-4 as the secured a 46-33
victory to advance back to the sub-state championship game.

Claire Schippers led TMP with 13 points. Gracyn Schippers
scored all seven of her points in the first half and did not play in the second
half because of illness.

TMP finishes the season 11-12. Smith Center is 18-4.

🏀 Lady Monarchs season ends in sub-state semifinals loss to Smith Center

&nbsp; HAYS, Kan. – Fort Hays State Women's Soccer announced the signing of nine individuals for the 2024 season. Head coach Tyson John&nbsp;has added five transfers and four true freshmen.

Below is information on each of the commitments. All five transfers are already enrolled at FHSU for the spring semester, while one freshman is already on campus as well. Three of the four freshmen will join the team prior to the 2024 fall season.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Chelsea Bowen, Jr., 5-4, Defender, Alta Loma, Calif. / Alta Loma HS / Chaffey College Chaffey College: As a sophomore in 2023, earned all-conference first team honors as a center back…Helped her team to the CCCAA Final Four in 2023 and the CCCAA championship game in 2022…As a freshman, started as a midfielder and earned all-conference first team and all-region honors.

Alta Loma HS: Served as a team captain her senior year, earning all-conference first team honors…As a junior earned all-conference honors and helped her team to the state finals.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Sydney Cotter, Jr., 5-4, Forward/Midfielder, West Covina, Calif. / South Hills HS / Chaffey College Chaffey College: As a sophomore in 2023, earned All-America honors from United Soccer Coaches by recording 13 goals and three assists, helping her team to the CCCAA Final Four…Two-time all-conference selection, while also earned all-region and all-state honors.

Butler CC: All-KJCCC and All-Region First Team selection in 2022 for the Grizzlies, finishing the year with a team-best 19 goals to go with eight assists…Led the Grizzlies in points in 2022 with 46…As a freshman in 2021, recorded 10 goals and eight assists for 28 points.

The TMP-Marian Lady Monarchs take on the Smith Center Lady Red Thursday in the semifinals of the 2A Oakley sub-state in Oakley.

The Monarchs advanced to the second round with a win over the host Oakley while Smith Center defeated Hill City in the opening round.

Tipoff is set for 6:00 p.m. from Oakley High School on the Monarchs Sports Network.

KANSAS - Several area senior wrestlers have accepted their invitation to participate in the first Kansas Wrestling Coaches Association Shrine Duals. The wrestlers who were selected, and accepted
their invitation, will compete during the KWCA Kansas Shrine Duals on Sunday,
March 17th, 2024 at Fugate Gymnasium on the campus of Newman University in
Wichita, Kansas.

Gates open at 2:30 pm and the opening
ceremonies will begin at 3:15 pm.

The area wrestlers who will participate include Hays High's Harley Zimmerman (149) and Alexis Burton (136). Zimmerman won a second consecutive state title at 144 last weekend in Park City while Burton finished second.

Also competing will be Kaydawn Haag (143) of Ellis, Adrian Wynn (123) and Myah Mattheyer (155) of Trego and Phillipsburg's&nbsp;Isabella Keesee (136).

dedicated to improving
the lives of children by
providing pediatric specialty care, innovative research, and outstanding

All selections were made by the KWCA after review of
applications submitted by wrestlers and following an acceptance of an
invitation to participate. Wrestlers who chose not to apply or who were invited
but declined their invitation are not included in the final selections. The
general divide of the Kansas Shrine Bowl is used to assign wrestlers to the
East or West team. However, some exceptions
are made to ensure
fulfillment of all weight classes with wrestlers who applied
