The Kansas Department of Health and Environment on Friday reported 19 new COVID-19 cases in Ellis County had been identified since Wednesday. 

There have been 191 new COVID-19 cases identified in Ellis County in the month of August after a lull in cases dwindled to near zero in June.

As of Friday morning, the University of Kansas Health System reported 11 COVID-19 inpatients at HaysMed.

Since reporting began, there have been 3,995 cases of COVID-19 identified in Ellis County, including 74 coronavirus-related deaths.

The Hays Arts Council's Fall Art Walk is scheduled from 6:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. Friday, kicking off a flurry of activity this weekend in downtown Hays.

But while the annual event is sure to provide ample opportunities to explore and enjoy downtown, the anchor exhibition will showcase the works of Gordon Sherman in a retrospective of the well-known, award-winning artist who taught at Fort Hays State University for 23 years.

Last December, Sherman retired from FHSU and worked with Hays Arts Council Executive Director Brenda Meder on the exhibition until his death earlier this summer.

"We are really very proud and honored to be presenting this," Meder said. "It's a little bit bittersweet."

During his tenure at the university and beyond, his work was frequently recognized, she said.

"His work was exhibited nationally and internationally," Meder said. "If Gordon entered a show, it didn't matter if people knew who he was, or if it was in another country, he not only got in, he often got an award.

"There is just something unique about his work."

She said his pieces often challenge the audience to explore his pieces and his process, hence the show's name, "Mysterious Iconography."

"Gordon would use a lot of iconic images, or just icons," Meder said. "He wasn't always forthcoming about on it was, but at least you could have the conversation."

While Meder said Sherman worked with her on the exhibition until his death afterward his children stepped up and helped facilitate the show.

"We were expecting him to be part of this and being there," she said. "Fortunately, with the support of his two children who live — one in Texas, one in Oregon — and colleagues and friends, we are still able to carry this out."

While the exhibition will anchor the Fall Art Walk, it will also be available for viewing in the gallery until Oct. 8.

"If the art walk doesn't fit into your schedule, please come by and see that exhibition," Meder said.

While the core Art Walk will be in the regular hours and include many downtown businesses, Meder said there are several exhibitions outside of the core times for this event that allow participants to experience the full gamut of offerings that reach across Hays without sacrificing the downtown experience.

"When things are off of the beaten path a little bit, I encourage them to start with earlier hours, so people can go to those places before they settle into downtown," Meder said.

With exhibitions in downtown as well as around Hays, and with other community events scheduled for the weekend, she said it will be a good weekend for area residents to enjoy art as well as downtown Hays.

"We're really excited about it," Meder said. "We have a lot of amazing things lined up and just want to invite everyone out."

🎙Fall Art Walk to kick off busy weekend in downtown Hays

After skipping 2020, Rockalooa will return to Municipal Park in Hays from 5 p.m. to 11 p.m. Saturday, capping off a busy weekend for downtown.

This year's free and family-friendly event will be the seventh Rockalooa, but somewhat abbreviated than previous years, said organizer Matt Isley.

"It's a smaller event this year," he said. "In 2018 and 2019, we had two stages running all day with lots of vendors through Municipal Park. This year, (we're) kind of just easing back into it."

"It's right after Brews on the Bricks, so check out Brews on the Bricks, and right after that, walk on down to the park."

While this year's event might be shorter than previous iterations, it will still feature a mix of local and regional bands performing an eclectic mix of musical styles.

"We want to have a free, accessible event, and hopefully, a lot of people can make it out," he said.

Kicking off the night will be Hays local Jordan Rome, performing alternative county, he said.

Headlight Rivals, a rock group from Manhattan, will perform next.

Another local band, Company 11, will then take the stage to perform alternative rock.

Isley's band Dangerously Biased is also slated to perform, followed by Lincoln, Neb.-based The Fey.

"That's going to be our sort of change-it-up band," Isley said. "It's kind of a fusion, R&amp;B, blues, rock kind of band."

Wrapping up the evening, another local band — Miles On End — is set to perform.

"I like to stagger them, local, regional, local regional," Isley said.

🎙Rockalooa returns to Hays with 'lite' event Saturday

On Monday, Fort Hays State University welcomed students for the first day of classes and a little bit of fun, with the annual Back to School picnic.

Hundreds crowded the FHSU quad to visit with over 40 area businesses and student organizations during the afternoon event.

"The Back to School Picnic is iconic," said Fort Hays State University President Tisa Mason.

That event welcomed NCK Tech and Hays Hair Academy students to campus, along with the community, to introduce students to Hays.

In previous years, Downtown Hays Development Corp. has hosted the March 2 Main, but this year those activities were included in the picnic.

"Re-evaluating it in 2021, we got all of the major key players together and said, 'Why have two fantastic events that are going to compete against each other? Why not join forces and have one big blowout?' " said Allie Glidewell, DHDC director of events and operations.

The university also hosted vaccination events during the first week to make it easy for anyone to be vaccinated to receive one, including an event during the Back to School Picnic.

While the university began the semester with no face masks or vaccination mandates, Mason said FHSU would monitor the situation closely and encourage safe behaviors.

"We will continue, just like we did with our phaseout plan, to encourage face coverings," Mason said.

But she said some specific courses, situations or gatherings on campus might implement masking requirements as needed.

"Unlike many of the other universities, it is not an all-class mandate. It is by decision of the faculty member or a specific organization," Mason said.

Even without the requirement in place, she said some have taken to wearing masks.

"We want to make sure the people who are wearing masks are feeling comfortable, not bullied, and that we are respecting them and thanking them for doing that," Mason said.

The university will also encourage COVID-19 vaccinations for those students and staff.

"We have a robust vaccination incentive program," Mason said. "That includes direct payment of $400 to eligible Fort Hays State University students and employees."

Other Kansas schools have offered drawings and scholarship dollars, but she said the direct financial payment made more sense for FHSU.

"First of all, it is a direct payment of cash," Mason said. "It applies to every student and our faculty and staff. ... We think cash is a good incentive. We think our students will spend a lot of that money locally, which will pump into the community as well, and it's the right thing to do. It's to encourage people to take that step if there are people willing and able to, to protect our community."

And those previously vaccinated are also eligible.

"All you have to do is show your card, voluntarily, and you will get your $400," Mason said.

She said with this program, they are respecting individual rights while incentivizing community members to move forward with the vaccination.

Through the FHSU gateway program, students at NCK Tech and the Hays Academy of Hair Design are also eligible for the incentive.

Eligible students and staff can provide their vaccination cards until Oct. 8 to be eligible.

While FHSU students will being classes without COVID-19 precautions mandated, as case counts continue to rise, Mason said they will continue to monitor and make changes as needed.

"The one thing that we don't want to do, is to go back to remote learning," she said.&nbsp;"We know that that is a challenge for students so we are doing everything possible to prevent that. We have the flexibility and we will do what we need to do, but we want to keep students face-to-face."

🎙Post Podcast: Potatoes can provide a variety of delicious and nutritious meal options

Following a year of delays due to the pandemic, two phases of the Hays Accessible Recreation Complex, located at 33rd and Hillcrest, are nearing completion — just in time for the kids of all ages to enjoy the splash pad and new playground equipment during the waning days of summer.&nbsp;

"Way back in the beginning, they told me construction would only be six to nine weeks," said Sarah Meitner, Arc of the Central Plains board president. "Which now I just laugh at, because we have been building for months. ... But that's OK. Every good thing is worth the wait."

<a href="https://www.facebook.com/HAYSARCPARK">Updates have been posted to the ARC Park Facebook page</a>, announcing the pending completion, with numerous messages of support from the community.

The project was broken into three parts — the playground, the splash pad and baseball fields.

When construction began, the playground was anticipated to be completed first, with the splash pad opening later, but with construction delays, the timeline changed.

"Both are two different construction teams," Meitner said. But as they worked on the different sections she said the splash pad is now just as likely to open first.

"So we will have to see who crosses the finish line first," Meitner said. "Because they are both very close."

With the splash pad, the above-ground equipment was being finished last week.

"They saved that for the very end because they have so much attention from people wanting to come over and get on."

While the equipment for the pad is in place, Meitner said the fencing is not yet ready.

"But we don't need fencing to open, so as soon as the equipment is all in and we fire it up and it's going it's going to open," she said. "We hope that we can get people on it for the warmest days to come of summer, and it does not need to close when the pool closes. That's the other really cool thing about a splash pad is that there is no lifeguards on duty, no staff needs to be there all the time, so it can stay open through Sept., possibly into Oct. if the weather holds out."

She said they will announce the opening on facebook, but no big celebration is planned at this time.

"We are just going to open when it opens and circle back later and do a ceremonial grand opening, ribbon cutting after the fact."

The last piece of the playground to be installed was the donated turf, with crews recently starting installation.

"That's the last bit there," Meitner said, with fencing slated to be installed immediately after.

"And then signage and that's about it," Meitner said.

"We will open as soon as it is safe," she said. "As soon as all of the components are in place and it's safe for the kids, everything is cleaned up. We have had a couple of things that have needed to be fixed because just different things have happened, but once it is all ready to go the gate will open for it as well."

🎙ARC Park nears completion

Hays Catholic Schools, TMP-Marian and Holy Family Elementary are excited to kick off the 2021-22 school year with the Back 2 School Bash on Friday on the campus of Thomas More Prep-Marian. 

All in the Hays community are invited to attend this fun family event.

Following the opening prayer and blessing at 4:45 p.m., enjoy a hot dog provided and grilled by Astra Bank of Hays and a cold beverage donated by the Kiwanis Club of Hays and served to you by the TMP-M Key Club. 

This will be a cool treat, thanks to ice donated by Buff's Car Wash. The Knights of Columbus, Council #6984 will also be serving complimentary watermelon. Auto World of Hays will provide water throughout the event.&nbsp;

Ice cream, Sno-Cones, Monarch Football Madness tickets and Hays Catholic Schools yard signs will all be available for purchase.&nbsp;

Southwind Crossfit will be hosting a fun run for all ages beginning at 6 p.m. In addition, there will be several sports scrimmages throughout the evening ending with the Blue and White Football Scrimmage on Cripplegate Field at 7 p.m.&nbsp;

The TMP-M Cheerleaders will be painting faces as well as performing at 6:45 p.m. Also included is the TMP-M Chess Club, which will show off their skills, and the Garden Club featuring amazing homegrown produce.&nbsp;

At the conclusion of the activities at 9 p.m., a street dance will continue and prizes donated by the TMP-M High School StuCo will be drawn. You must be present to win.&nbsp;

At 10 p.m., the evening will end with a literal “bang” as a firework show will be presented by The Golden Q Bar &amp; Grill and Brick's Rockin’ BBQ. &nbsp;

Non-perishable food items to benefit the St. Joseph’s Food Pantry, will be collected at the welcome table upon entering. 

Parking on campus will be limited to the east and south of Al Billinger Fieldhouse. 

Registration for all events and prizes will be available at the welcome table.

🎙Post Podcast:  Grow Hays' housing rehab program seeking applicants

The Kansas Department of Health and Environment on Friday reported 12 new COVID-19 cases in Ellis County had been identified since Wednesday.&nbsp;

As of Friday, the University of Kansas Health System reported 10 COVID-19 inpatients at HaysMed.

Since reporting began, there have been 3,860 cases of COVID-19 identified in Ellis County, including 73 coronavirus-related deaths.

🎙Post Podcast: Preparations underway for chamber Business Showcase

Big Brothers Big Sisters Ellis County's annual Duck Derby fundraiser is set to return this year on Wednesday, once again filling the Hays Aquatic Park, 300 Main, with plastic ducks for a good cause.

Festivities are set to begin at 5:30 p.m.

"We have over 5,000 ducks that we have numbered, and when people adopt ducks, they are assigned numbers, and then we take these ducks to the Hays Aquatic Park...and we will dump them down the slide," said Jennie Bates, Big Brothers Big Sisters Northwest Kansas executive director.

From there, the ducks will race around the lazy river, she said.

Two heats of the ducks with a championship race to determine the winners.

"The first ten ducks that come around into our catcher that we have, are our winners," Bates said.

The grand prize has been a vehicle in previous years, but with the shortage of supply, this year, $10,000 has been substituted, provided by event sponsors.

Ducks can be purchased online, the Big Brothers Big Sisters office located in the Chesnut Building, 1200 Main, or at Bank of Hays,&nbsp;1000 West 27th, Eagle Radio, 2300 Hall, Hays Hobby Shop,&nbsp;1905 General Custer and the Chelsy Proehl Farmers Insurance Agency,&nbsp;1012 Main.

Ducks are $5 each individually, 6 for $25, 12 for $50 and 25 for $100.<br>

Along with the Duck Derby, a separate event for children the Duck Dash features youth-themed prizes.

"We give away about 30 prizes for the Duck Dash," Bates said, including the grand prize of a six-hour inflatable rental.

Ducks for the Dash are $2 each and children will be able to take a duck with them.

"It's pretty amazing to see it all go on," Bates said.

And about 10 boats will also be participating in the Sink of Sail Cardboard Regatta, she said, named after last year's winner, the High Plains Baptist Church.

During that event, groups will race boats for one or two people made from cardboard and duck tape.

"It's a lot of fun to watch those," Bates said. "And it's a race. It's to see who is going to be the fastest and win the naming rights for next year's race."

While the event itself is a fun way for the community to gather together, the Duck Derby is a primary way Big Brothers Big Sisters receives operating funds for the year, sustaining the organization's work to connect children with adults in a positive way.

"Big Brothers Big Sisters is a mentoring organization," Bates said.&nbsp;

As a non-profit, the groups work to connect children with adult mentors.

"We match children in our community who are needing some extra support, who are facing different kinds of adversities in their lives, and we pair them with an adult mentor that meets with them one-on-one two to four times a month," Bates said.

In Ellis County, there are currently 135 matches, she said.

"We have to do events and fundraisers to help support the program," Bates said. "The Duck Derby helps do that."

"We always have a need for volunteers," Bates said. "Right now, we have about 30 kids who are needing a volunteer here in Ellis County, most of them being little brothers. So, we definitely have a need for male volunteers."

She said children could also be matched with a couple or a family.

But she said without events like the Duck Derby and the support from the community, the organization would not be able to make those connections.

"It's amazing how much Big Brothers Big Sisters is supported through this," she said.

                    </figure><p><b>By JAMES BELL</b><br><i>Hays Post</i></p><p>Big Brothers Big Sisters Ellis County's annual Duck Derby fundraiser is set to return this year on Wednesday, once again filling the Hays Aquatic Park, 300 Main, with plastic ducks for a good cause.</p><p>Festivities are set to begin at 5:30 p.m.</p><p>"We have over 5,000 ducks that we have numbered, and when people adopt ducks, they are assigned numbers, and then we take these ducks to the Hays Aquatic Park...and we will dump them down the slide," said Jennie Bates, Big Brothers Big Sisters Northwest Kansas executive director.</p><p>From there, the ducks will race around the lazy river, she said.</p><p>Two heats of the ducks with a championship race to determine the winners.</p><p>"The first ten ducks that come around into our catcher that we have, are our winners," Bates said.</p><p>The grand prize has been a vehicle in previous years, but with the shortage of supply, this year, $10,000 has been substituted, provided by event sponsors.</p><p>Ducks can be purchased online, the Big Brothers Big Sisters office located in the Chesnut Building, 1200 Main, or at Bank of Hays,&nbsp;1000 West 27th, Eagle Radio, 2300 Hall, Hays Hobby Shop,&nbsp;1905 General Custer and the Chelsy Proehl Farmers Insurance Agency,&nbsp;1012 Main.</p><p>Ducks are $5 each individually, 6 for $25, 12 for $50 and 25 for $100.<br></p><p>Along with the Duck Derby, a separate event for children the Duck Dash features youth-themed prizes.</p><p>"We give away about 30 prizes for the Duck Dash," Bates said, including the grand prize of a six-hour inflatable rental.</p><p>Ducks for the Dash are $2 each and children will be able to take a duck with them.</p><p>"It's pretty amazing to see it all go on," Bates said.</p><p>And about 10 boats will also be participating in the Sink of Sail Cardboard Regatta, she said, named after last year's winner, the High Plains Baptist Church.</p><p>During that event, groups will race boats for one or two people made from cardboard and duck tape.</p><p>"It's a lot of fun to watch those," Bates said. "And it's a race. Since reporting began, there have been 3,796 cases of COVID-19 identified in Ellis County.

As of Friday, the University of Kansas Health System reported eight COVID-19 inpatients at HaysMed.

Due to an ongoing system upgrade at the KDHE, the latest number of deaths in Ellis County were unavailable.

🎙Post Podcast: Hays Fire Department warns of the danger of fires from cigarettes

The first full performance by the Hays Community Theatre since before the COVID-19 shutdown stymied production for the group is set for this weekend with "Little Shop of Horrors: The Musical."

Performances are set for 7 p.m. Thursday through Saturday at the Thomas More Prep- Marian Dreiling Theatre, 1701 Hall.

While the movie version of "Little Shop of Horrors," released in 1960 and remade in 1986, is the most well-known version of the story, director Jenni Rajewski said the musical has a long history.

"It began back in the beginning of the 20th century," Rajewski said. "It's been a short story, it's been a black-and-white movie, then the musical came out, then the (1986) movie with Rick Moranis. Now it is a cult classic."

Through the productions, however, the story remains similar.

"It's about this shy little florist, who discovers this very rare breed of what he thinks is a Venus flytrap, but it turns out that it is a carnivore," Rajewski said. "And in a very Faustian trip, he has to make a deal with the devil and decide if he is going to sell his soul for the money, the girl, all the fame and fortune, or if he is going to hold to his principals and let the plant go."

She said despite the heavy themes, the musical is lighthearted and family-friendly.

"It's so fun," Rajewski said. "It's very upbeat, there is this very weird connection between all of these different cast members and the music is really high energy.

"It's got some R&amp;B, it's got some almost bluesy stuff, there's rock-n-roll, there's a couple of songs, sweetie-cutie songs. It's just this very wide variety of singing. There's no rap, but other than that, I think I can accommodate just about anybody's taste."</p><p>While Rajewski is a theater veteran, this is her first show with the Hays group.</p><figure>

                    </figure><p>"I'm just super excited that they asked me to come and do this and be a part of the Hays Community Theatre team," she said. "It has been an enlightening and exciting experience.</p><p>"They work so hard to make sure this community has a theater program available to anybody."</p><p>Rajewski said the all-volunteer group was focused on helping as much as possible through the preparations for the production.</p><p>"Every single one of these people — every actor, every technician, every stagehand, every pit member — is just there because they want to do this, they want to help out, and they want to be part of this.</p><p>"They are just fabulous. I could not believe how well everything just pieced itself together and how willing people were to give up their time and all this energy and work to make this thing happen."</p><p>And some of the cast members will be familiar faces, but others are new.</p><p>"We've got 11 people in the cast, and they are about as true of a mix as you can get,"&nbsp;Rajewski said.&nbsp;</p><p>That cast list includes five high schoolers from the area, college students and community members.</p><p>The cast is also a mix of veterans and first timers.</p><figure>

"It's just amazing how much they vary and then they come together like this and form this little community of actors."</p><p>And with the group coming together for the first production since before the pandemic she said the excitement for the audience and the performers reflects a pent-up desire for artist expression.</p><p>"We lost our artistic outlet and for some of us, we lost that thing that levels us, ground us," Rajewski said.
