It is an election year and yard signs are beginning to appear. The one I see most along my route around town says LET US VOTE AT FHSU.

My first impression was that the folks at FHSU could not vote. A Google search informed me that was not it at all.

It was not about whether you could vote at FHSU. It was about where you could vote.

 If you are a registered voter in Ellis County, you vote in the precinct assigned to your permanent address. There are five precincts within the city of Hays.

They are located strategically to give all voters equal access to vote. There is no precinct location that requires a voter to travel more than 2 miles to vote in Hays.

Each voting location needs to have plenty of parking and is ADA accessible.  Finding locations that meet those requirements is not easy. 

Our community steps forward when asked. Precinct polls are in Sternberg Museum, Hays Recreation Center, the VFW Hall, Messiah Lutheran Church and the Smokey Hill Country Club.

All provide convenient and accessible places to cast a ballot. It seems to me that the question about where to vote is not one of need but one of convenience.

We live in a country where voting is a right and a privilege. We are a country where the people decide how and by whom we are governed. If we do not vote, we give up our voice.  

The yard signs and the energy behind them would be better used if they said. 

GET OUT AND VOTE, our Democracy depends on it.

Two miles to the pols is not an inconvenience.

LETTER: Words matter in FHSU polling place debate

I want to address the issue of misinformation, particularly in response to recent statements from Ellis County Clerk, Bobbi Dreiling, via her official candidate Facebook page. She criticized my remarks regarding a recent event where I mentioned misprinted ballots sent out by the clerk's office in a past election.

Ms. Dreiling pointed out that I said "in the last election," referring to the 2024 Presidential Primary when no misprinted ballots were reported.

Let's clarify: in 2020, when Ms. Dreiling was Deputy Clerk, 3,800 misprinted ballots were indeed sent out. This included a Kansas Legislative race mistakenly labeled as a U.S. Senate Race, prompting a three-day halt to absentee voting and necessitating ballot reprinting. 

Additionally, a recent incident during the Hays USD 489 school bond election saw two voters receiving incorrect ballots due to human error in the Ellis County Clerk's office.

The accuracy of the words used doesn't change the fact that these incidents occurred. 

Moving to the 2024 Presidential Primary, voter turnout in Ellis County was shockingly low at just 6.42%, with less than 1,300 ballots cast.

Regardless of differing reports on voter turnout percentages between 2018 and 2022—whether it's an 8% decrease reported by the ACLU or the 4.5% decrease cited by Ms. Dreiling's office—any decline is unacceptable to me.

Polling place closures, removal of ballot boxes and the decision not to allow voting on FHSU's campus further compound accessibility issues. As someone who votes in the district affected by these changes, I'm disappointed that such decisions were made without consulting actual residents, particularly young adults whose voting rights deserve encouragement and support.

Discussing the removal of ballot boxes in Ellis and Victoria, cost concerns were raised, emphasizing the expense of transportation. While fiscal responsibility is important, prioritizing cost savings over voting accessibility shouldn't be the primary consideration. Similarly, staff convenience in checking ballot boxes should not outweigh the need for accessible voting options.

Regarding misinformation, I've corrected misleading guidance from the Deputy Clerk who wrongly advised people with felonies that they couldn't vote.

This wasn't just a semantic issue—it directly impacted voters' rights and required correction. In the last election, I ran as a write-in candidate despite the odds, driven by my belief that every election should provide a genuine choice.

Disappointed by the turnout and representation, I'm running again because I see little improvement in our electoral process.Every registered voter deserves a voice.

As an Elections Officer, I'm committed to hearing and supporting all voices, regardless of political affiliation or background.

Let's ensure the electoral process remains accessible and fair for everyone—Republicans, Democrats, Independents, students, and lifelong residents alike.

LETTER: Democratic Ellis County clerk candidate critical of current clerk

If W.B. Yeats words, “Education is not the filling of a pot but the lighting of the fire,” then a score of house finches lit the match that led me to discover fascinating facts about our corn patch. Nature offers intriguing lessons when we inquire.

Instruction began as our corn tasseled a few weeks ago. Scores of house finches descended on fresh tassels, nibbling and tugging at serrated edges that distribute pollen. Flocks returned morning and evening to gorge on their tasty treat. Their behavior triggered me to research why wild finches crave corn pollen.

While I didn’t find an answer to that question, the search led to a world of discovery for me. Every day, I watch pollinators zip from one blossom to another in our garden, delivering essential DNA info to pumpkins, tomatoes, cantaloupe, zucchinis, cucumbers, potatoes, and flowers. Amazingly I never wondered how corn fertilized. Those feisty finches and their stellar teaching technique remedied that lack of curiosity.

Thank goodness we live in an age where an inquisitive mind can retrieve info with the click of a computer key. After several days of wondering why tiny birds kept returning to nibble our corn tassels, I googled answers.

The first hour led down multiple bunny trails, none of which addressed my question. However, it did direct me to sites that explain corn pollination and how it differs from other plants. Of course, I now have more questions, but cold weather arrives soon with time to explore when outside weather isn’t calling my name.

Unfortunately, I found no satisfaction regarding finches eating pollen other than they eat seeds. Dangly parts on corn tassels resemble seeds. What I did learn was that corn’s widely separated male and female reproductive parts that typically depend on wind transfer of pollen to ovule differ from most other plants.

As you check your own corn or drive about the countryside examining cornfields, consider a plant that humans began manipulating thousands of years ago. What is now a tall plant with a thick stalk originated much smaller with fewer seeds to either eat or plant.

Now, hybridized tall, thick stems commonly produce one to two ears containing up to 1000 ovules. Corn kernels result from the 400 to 700 that successfully fertilize, leading me to wonder how many ears does the Green Giant require to fill a 16 oz. can? The real miracle involves transferring pollen from those tassels rising feet above ovules enclosed in a husk.

I always wondered why corn has inedible silks. Think back to grade school science and plant pollination. Silks sprout out of each ovary on each ear and serve as stigma and style of female blossoms. That frothy eruption of fine strands delivers pollen that blows, falls, or gets shaken off by hungry finches onto an individual silk which then transports it to an ovary where it turns into a corn kernel. Interestingly, I learned that once pollen delivery takes place, silks detach. In theory, humans can test nature’s success by gently tugging those fibers days before they harvest corn.

Before this investigation, growing and processing corn offered enjoyable means to produce a favorite food. As a bonus, we liked watching it grow and attract birds to the garden. Now that I know more, I’m impressed with one more of the many ways the Good Lord has of making sure His creatures eat well.

Each year the United States Breastfeeding Committee (USBC) requests a Congressional Proclamation to declare August as National Breastfeeding Month in the United States. In 2021, the USBC piloted a toolkit that individuals could use to urge their governor to proclaim August as "Breastfeeding Month" in their state or territory. Kansas has joined the list! Governor Kelly signed the proclamation for Kansas on July 29, 2024. The theme this year is “Nourish, Sustain, Thrive”

Most of us have heard about how breastfeeding positively affects the health of infants and toddlers. Breastfeeding also positively impacts families financially as well as the environment. However, many have not heard about the positive impacts on a mother’s health. Women who breastfeed their children lower their risk of breast cancer. According to an epidemiological study published in the The Lancet, breastfeeding is dose specific. For every 12 months of breastfeeding, the risk of breast cancer goes down by 4.3%. This can be for one child or a combination of children. Breastfeeding also reduces the risk of ovarian cancer, high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes as reported by the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality. Finally, studies also show that breastfeeding can help lower the risk of osteoporosis and stroke. That is a lot of health benefits that make for healthier women and society. And those are only the physical health benefits. There are also social-emotional benefits as well that help with bonding and parenting.

Just because a woman wants to breastfeed though doesn’t mean that she has the support to do so. While breastfeeding is natural, it isn’t always easy. The World Breastfeeding Week campaign this year focuses on survival, health and wellbeing. It will showcase the need to improve breastfeeding support to reduce inequalities that exist in our society with a special focus on breastfeeding in times of emergencies and crisis. A mother who is breastfeeding can continue to feed her baby without the need for clean water, formula or a way to boil water. Feeding her baby is one less thing to think about during an emergency or crisis.

Join us to celebrate mothers and to protect, promote, and support breastfeeding and human milk feeding for the 14th annual National Breastfeeding Month. In Hays and Ellis County, La Leche League of the Western Plains and the Ellis County Breastfeeding Coalition will hold a celebration on August 14th, 2024 at 10 am during our regularly scheduled La Leche League meeting. KOERNER: World breastfeeding week, month

Making healthy choices is something we have the opportunity to do every day. For example, the foods and exercise we choose make a difference in our health and quality of life. However, it can be challenging to achieve a healthy balance because these choices can be difficult to make among all the other commitments in life.

The good news is that not all health-related decisions have to be challenging. For example, simply walking for 30 minutes throughout the day provides promising results. In fact, walking can improve heart health, strengthen the lungs, improve quality of sleep, and fight osteoporosis! Walking is shown to improve mood by the release of endorphins, and it lowers the risk of Alzheimer’s Disease. If walking is something you are interested in, a Walk with Ease class may be for you.

Walk with Ease (WWE) is here to help people with arthritis or other related conditions reduce pain, increase balance, strength, walking pace, and improve overall health. Walk with Ease is not only an evidence-based program, but it’s also fun! Participants have the opportunity to walk, stretch, and socialize during each session. WWE is a class created by the National Arthritis Foundation, and it is offered through Kansas State Research &amp; Extension.

Walk with Ease provides pain management and physical activity education to individuals and families. The class includes an educational book that covers various topics about walking and arthritis management, and the $20 registration fee covers the price of the book. Walk with Ease classes aim to help each participant implement realistic goals, maintain a long-term physical activity routine, and help Kansans find resources to stay active.

For example, the foods and exercise we choose make a difference in our health and quality of life. However, it can be challenging to achieve a healthy balance because these choices can be difficult to make among all the other commitments in life.The good news is that not all health-related decisions have to be challenging. For example, simply walking for 30 minutes throughout the day provides promising results. In fact, walking can improve heart health, strengthen the lungs, improve quality of sleep, and fight osteoporosis! Walking is shown to improve mood by the release of endorphins, and it lowers the risk of Alzheimer’s Disease. If walking is something you are interested in, a Walk with Ease class may be for you.Walk with Ease (WWE) is here to help people with arthritis or other related conditions reduce pain, increase balance, strength, walking pace, and improve overall health. Walk with Ease is not only an evidence-based program, but it’s also fun! Participants have the opportunity to walk, stretch, and socialize during each session. WWE is a class created by the National Arthritis Foundation, and it is offered through Kansas State Research &amp; Extension.Walk with Ease provides pain management and physical activity education to individuals and families. The class includes an educational book that covers various topics about walking and arthritis management, and the $20 registration fee covers the price of the book. Walk with Ease classes aim to help each participant implement realistic goals, maintain a long-term physical activity routine, and help Kansans find resources to stay active.Are you ready to make the healthy choice the easy choice? WINKEL: Keep it simple, walk for wellness

I’m sure you all have seen Hay Post story on your decision to renew Eddie's position. If any of you haven't, I would encourage you to go to Hays Post to learn about what people are saying about your&nbsp;leadership&nbsp;at Hays Medical Center.

Unfortunately, the readers of this Post extend to the entire western part of our state. All of my referrals and all of the referrals to Hays Medical Center are in the zone.

The whole reason I started writing letters, taking time to address issues to the board, was to make sure all you board members were&nbsp;aware&nbsp;of what was happening. It was my sincere hope and prayer that this would not become a public event.

Despite repeated urgings to go public with my concerns, I never did so, as this reflects negatively on our hospital, the administration and most importantly you board members. Don't blame Dr. Curry for his post that went viral. He is not the one who&nbsp;voted. 

Just read the numbers of people who agree with and supported everything he was saying. Like it or not, you board members have been charged with overseeing the administration and making sure that the hospital is moving in the right direction.

Hays will be a much different place with a hospital that soon will have to lay off even more people due to the enormous loss of several of your most productive departments.

I can’t imagine any physician wanting to come to a place that has such unaddressed&nbsp;turmoil. The only physicians, nurses or staff members who would work in such a chaotic, oppressive and hostile environment are those who come only for the&nbsp;Money!

These are not the physicians I would choose to go to, nor is it the reflection of high-quality care that we have so long been accustomed to.&nbsp;Your&nbsp;decision to let the OB department crumble with no one held accountable will cost tens of millions of dollars in revenue and take decades to rebuild.

You have been warned that other departments are also fragmented and crumbling, and still voted to maintain the&nbsp;status quo. I expect moving forward with his poor leadership will result in even more departments crumbling.

Hays will be a much different place. The decision was&nbsp;yours. Rumors and perceptions would've been much different had you elected to fire Eddie Herrman, HaysMed CEO, instead of renewing his contract.

Clearly financial struggles would have continued to exist. New problems would arise, but you would have had the respect and support of those staff members who have given their heart and soul to Hays Medical Center.

I can assure you, they would've worked diligently to try to rebuild Hays Medical Center under new leadership.&nbsp;People in Hays, would be willing to make concessions if they saw leaderships doing the same.

A leader that would value people and not announce EVERYONE is REPLACEABLE.&nbsp; What in the world did you see in Eddie that would blind you to such a&nbsp;catastrophic&nbsp;decision? Was it your fear of having to work as a board choosing a new administrator? How in the world do you think the morale and the support of those lifers will be regained after turning your back on them in favor of Eddie?

No, I don't have all the facts, so I hope you have Great reasons and a Solid plan in effect to rebuild departments, staff members and others who will be affected in the short term….next 5 to 10 years.

In the last six weeks, I have personally witnessed the incredible struggles with health care. Losing any physician, experienced staff member or other members of our hospital WILL be very difficult to replace.

The decisions were yours. The consequences will also be yours and Will affect everyone in Hays. I hope I'm incredibly wrong in my assessment of this current debacle. This is the first time in 30 years that I have been practicing in Hays that I have been so disappointed in the leadership of Hays Medical Center.

Letter: Local doctor shares concern on HaysMed

If you’re the average American, you spend most of the day at work, and finding time to achieve any personal goals can seem daunting. In your “free time,” you may have kids to take care of, dinner to put on the table, or countless chores to get done. At the end of the day, you might not have much energy left to work on yourself.

One of your personal goals may be related to improving health and getting active, and as you already know, this is difficult to achieve amid a busy life. So, what if you took a different approach?

What if you could fit physical activity into your workday without sacrificing hours of your free time?

Here are a few nontraditional tips to sneak in physical activity throughout the workday:

· One simple approach is to adjust your commute. Instead of driving, try bicycling. Those who regularly bicycle to work have a substantially lower risk of heart disease and obesity.

· Take advantage of webinars and virtual meetings. Since your office door is likely closed in such meetings, you won’t look goofy marching in place, stretching, or using a pair of dumbbells.

· Invest in a walking pad that the whole office can utilize. A walking pad is a small treadmill that is suitable for a standing desk. Slowly walk while you work instead of sitting. This can make a tremendous difference in your activity level!

· Get moving over your lunch break. One of my favorite ways to move more throughout the day is to walk for 20- 30 minutes at noon. This little brain break gets blood flowing and energizes me throughout the afternoon. To save time over my lunch, I prep leftovers or a simple meal the evening before. If walking isn’t for you, a short resistance workout with bands, dumbbells, or body weight is another option!

· Walking meetings are an alternative way to brainstorm topics. In fact, studies show that walking engages parts of the brain that allow you to be innovative! So, next time you meet with a coworker, try walking and talking out the details.

A workplace that encourages healthy behaviors will help you achieve your wellness goals. Plus, it also has the potential to boost the prosperity of the business you work for. Studies show that health-oriented workplaces see increased productivity rates, lower healthcare costs, and reduced staff turnover.

Simple habits like sharing healthy foods or regular walking meetings can tremendously impact physical fitness and overall health. I encourage you to build a culture of wellness in the workplace by making a few small changes to your day. You might just be surprised by the results you see.

WINKEL: Multitasking to mindfulness

With all the political upheaval right now, and with candidates’ policies from both sides being tossed around like so much manure from the spreader, I just can’t seem to get past some of the more liberal ideas. One that particularly vexes me is the substitution of “politically correct” pronouns in place of words and phrases that have been used for generations, like “mom and dad,” many of which are even Biblical.

I’ve decided I better brush up on my “gender neutral” writing skills, and look at me, I couldn’t make it through the first paragraph without possibly offending someone. I really should have used the pronouns “human who carried and birthed me” and “human who provided the other half of the equation” in place of “mom and dad.” I’m concerned a restaurant “MENu” will soon become “a list of possible dishes for purchase,” Men at Work” signs will have to read “Male of the Human Species attempting to earn a living while leaning on a shovel.” And if you’re looking for an investment or to open a small business, my money would go into a sign company, as there are probably countless bathroom doors across this land in need of new signage.

And the great outdoors will not be immune to the new gender-neutral verbiage either, as every species on this earth comes with both sexes, if that’s still a thing. Some species won’t be affected much, as we usually don’t categorize them as one particular sex or the other when referring to them. For instance, fish are usually just fish, coyotes are usually just coyotes, bears are usually just bears, etc. References to some wildlife though will have to become gender-neutral. When referring to deer, elk and moose, bucks and bulls will have to be called “representatives of the species that grow antlers in the summer, lose them in winter and are tasty when made into summer sausage, jerky and tenderloins.” Does and cows will need to be referred to as “representatives of the species that grow no antlers, and often taste even better than the representatives that grow and lose antlers.” Neither will the terms “hen” and “rooster” be allowed when referring to pheasants. Roosters will possibly be known as “brightly-colored representative of the species that grow long tail feathers and taste yummy with a side of ranch.” Hens might be “dingy-colored representatives of the species that raise the young and are never spoken of when shot by mistake.” Although peacocks are rarely spoken of by gender, they are in fact peacocks and peahens. That won’t work for sure, so male peacocks will become known as “representatives of the species that grow big beautiful tailfeathers and roost above your car at night, making the expected mess.” Peahens will become “drab colored representatives of the species that raise the young and roost at night where they will also make the same mess on your car below.”

Now, I know these new gender-neutral animal and wildlife descriptions can get quite wordy, but anything to be politically correct and stay abreast of the new “woke “generation, and all you who know me know I’m all about political correctness. Exploring Kansas Outdoors: Gender neutrality in the great outdoors

The 2024 Ellis County fair was my third fair with the Cottonwood Extension District as either the 4-H program assistant or agent, however growing up in 4-H gives me a background of knowledge of what it takes to put on a county fair.

I’m always in awe at the work that is put into getting ready for the fair. First, we have the 4-H kids who are perfecting recipes, working with animals, or putting the finishing touches on a project. Parents who put in extra time on the weekends and evening helping their children and coaching them with projects. There is extra time and energy spent in the barns the month before prepping animals. The Extension agents and the office staff gather everything together to take to the fairgrounds. The fair board is putting in endless hours getting the grounds ready for the big week. Actually, they spend all 12 months getting ready and they are all volunteers who have to take vacation from their jobs to put on this big event. Some of them have kids that have aged out of 4-H but sill continue to volunteer, as it is a labor of love. The number of hours put in by everyone are hard to count.

A big thank you goes to our volunteer superintendents for stepping up and helping to display projects as well as assisting the judges. They are so good at what they do! Some volunteers don’t even have a background with 4-H but have a great eye for helping. The time and effort they put in behind the scenes makes the fair run so smoothly and is greatly appreciated.

I love to see the kids and all the excitement they bring. I love hearing the inspiration the 1st year members get that haven’t yet been through a fair and doing just one project helps find the spark to keep them going. So many possibilities are opened up for kids when they try new things.

I also enjoy the family aspect of 4-H. The kids are constantly learning from parents, siblings, volunteers and other 4-H members. Unlike other activities, 4-H is something the whole family can do together with siblings helping siblings.

It is amazing to see how everyone comes together when something doesn’t go as planned also. If an animal gets lose, people come out of no where to help the animal get where it is supposed to be. The 4-H clubs come together whether it is to make sure the food stand is staffed, trash is dumped or manure is removed. Members and parents spend hours cleaning before and after the fair to make sure the fairgrounds look good. Even when the jobs get dirty, at the end of the day the kids learn that the work has to be done.

Exhaustion at the end of the week is worth it for the joy that is seen in the kids based on their accomplishments, whether it’s learning how to control an animal, make a better cake or a ribbon placing. We have built a great community in Ellis County with a lot of pitching in and relationship building. Thanks to everyone for an amazing 2024 Fair. I look forward too many more in the future!

Ellis County Fair: Community and relationships

“Are you better off than you were four years ago?”

It is no secret that President Biden is unpopular.&nbsp; In the 2023&nbsp;Kansas Speaks&nbsp;poll, a whopping 62.8% of respondents were dissatisfied with Biden’s performance, versus 32.9% who were dissatisfied with fellow Democrat, Governor Laura Kelly.&nbsp; Widespread approval of Biden’s withdrawal is one of the few issues these days that bring Democrats, Republicans and independents together.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

The focus on Biden’s withdrawal centered on his age and his poor performance in the first Presidential debate–both legitimate concerns.&nbsp; Yet another issue lurks.&nbsp; By many measures, Biden’s presidency has been highly successful, characterized by a recovery from the COVID pandemic, a strong economy, falling violent crime rates, decreased poverty, and policies that have advanced the transition to domestically-produced clean energy and begun rebuilding the country’s decrepit infrastructure.&nbsp; One Biden policy even accomplished something no other President ever has–<a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/2023/09/12/biden-child-tax-credit-poverty-doubled/">cutting the child poverty rate in half</a>, to an all-time low.&nbsp; Congress did not renew the program.

Even issues important to&nbsp;Republicans&nbsp;look good for Biden.&nbsp; For example, recently, unauthorized crossings at the U.S.-Mexico border have&nbsp;<a href="https://www.texastribune.org/2024/07/16/texas-border-migrant-apprehensions-decrease/">declined steeply</a>, and there haven’t been any violent antifa or Black Lives Matter protests in years.

Despite all the good news,&nbsp;<a href="https://www.cnn.com/2022/03/08/politics/biden-polling-independents/index.html">independent voters</a>&nbsp;perceive the country to be in trouble under Biden. &nbsp; One possible culprit is our long break from high inflation between the early 1980s and 2021.&nbsp; Older Americans have forgotten–and younger Americans never knew–that controlling inflation means slowing down the&nbsp;increase&nbsp;in prices, not reversing costs to those of previous years.&nbsp; The latter would require nothing less than deliberately sending the country into economic decline.&nbsp; Price increases are under control, but costs are not going back to pre-2021 levels. The economic toll of doing so would be far too high.

The nation also continues to struggle with major social challenges, including homelessness, exorbitant housing costs, and fentanyl addiction, all of which we see and feel here in Kansas. They need ongoing, thoughtful attention from policymakers. Blaming them on immigrants is neither accurate nor helpful.

Whatever the causes of today’s public opinion, Biden’s legacy and Vice President Harris’ candidacy both depend in large part on how Americans perceive the current state of the nation.&nbsp;&nbsp;

INSIGHT: Back to 2020?

During this past season, we have seen widespread wheat streak mosaic virus across the state. Because of this, abundant curl mites will be active in the state. Producers should be vigilant about volunteer management between now and planting. Recent moisture may lead to higher levels of volunteer wheat emergence in the coming weeks.

Volunteer wheat control is one of the most important preventative measures for wheat streak mosaic virus. If volunteer wheat is allowed to stand, it creates a “green bridge,” allowing wheat streak mosaic and wheat curl mites to survive locally. Volunteer wheat should be terminated at least two weeks before planting to allow sufficient time for mites to die off. Growers should be mindful of volunteer wheat that may “hide” in double-cropped soybeans or cover crops and may be difficult to control.&nbsp;

Breaking the “green bridge”&nbsp;- wheat curl mites will move off growing wheat as the green tissue dries down and dies. After moving off the existing wheat at or near harvest time, the mites need to find green tissue of a suitable host soon, or they will die (death of the whole population will take approximately 2 weeks).

Producers often like to wait several weeks after harvest before making their first herbicide application to control volunteer wheat. This allows as much volunteer wheat as possible to emerge before spraying it or tilling it the first time. Glyphosate and atrazine are two herbicides that are often used for this purpose. Additional information about controlling volunteer wheat can be found in a recent eUpdate article: “<a href="https://eupdate.agronomy.ksu.edu/article/controlling-weeds-after-wheat-harvest-597-1">Controlling weeds after wheat harvest</a>.” Often, a second application or tillage operation will be needed later in the summer to eliminate the green bridge to fall-planted wheat by ensuring all volunteer wheat is dead within ½ mile of wheat being planted in the fall. Wet weather through late summer often favors multiple flushes of volunteer wheat. Also, it favors the growth of other grassy weeds that can support moderate populations of the curl mites and virus.

Management with genetic resistance: One tool in the toolbox&nbsp;- other than timely control of volunteer wheat, genetic resistance is also an important tool for WSMV control. Genetic resistance to wheat streak mosaic can also reduce the risk of severe disease problems. There are currently several wheat varieties adapted to Kansas that have wheat streak mosaic resistance. Other hosts for the wheat curl mite&nbsp;- volunteer wheat is not the only host of the wheat curl mite. Over the years, multiple research studies have evaluated the suitability of wild grasses as hosts for both the curl mite and the wheat streak virus. There is considerable range in the ability of a grassy weed species to host the mite and the virus. Barnyardgrass is among the more suitable hosts for both the virus and mites, but fortunately, it is not that common in wheat fields. In contrast, although relatively poor hosts, various foxtails could be important disease reservoirs simply because of their abundance. These grasses may play an important role in allowing the mites and the virus to survive during the summer months, particularly in the absence of volunteer wheat.

The K-State Research and Extension publication, MF3383 -&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bookstore.ksre.ksu.edu/pubs/MF3383.pdf">Wheat Streak Mosaic</a>, includes information about grassy weed hosts of the mite and the virus and the contribution of these hosts to the risk of severe wheat streak mosaic infections. Take note of significant stands of these grasses in marginal areas and control them as you would volunteer wheat.

CAMPBELL: Wheat streak mosaic virus: control of volunteer wheat is crucial

As Fort Hays State University (FHSU) gears up to launch its new strategic plan for the years 2024-2027, let’s reflect upon and celebrate the accomplishments of the 2019-2024 plan. Titled “Unlocking Untapped Potential,” the previous plan served as a comprehensive roadmap developed with the insight and contributions of the entire university community. Centered around five key goals—Academic Excellence, Student Success, Strategic Growth, Resources and Infrastructure, and Community and Global Engagement—each initiative was designed with specific, measurable outcomes in mind.

This column highlights the key accomplishments and challenges in achieving Goal 1: Academic Excellence, focused on fostering evidence-based best practices in teaching, supported by scholarly activities and professional development. Led by Dr. Jeffrey Briggs and Dr. Bradley Will, the initiatives under this goal made significant strides.

One of our major achievements was the early success in increasing the percentage of academic programs engaged in learning outcome assessments. These assessments, which ensure our academic programs’ integrity, effectiveness, and relevance, were a key focus area. Starting from 57 percent engagement in 2019, we surpassed our goal early, reaching an impressive 81 percent by 2023. These assessments now permeate every academic program, emphasizing continuous improvement and relevance.

The general education program’s success lies in its robust learning outcomes assessment. By 2021, the university had defined a unified set of desired outcomes tested and adopted for all general education courses. An initial pilot saw a third of the courses assessed, but by 2022, they had achieved a remarkable 100 percent assessment across all outcome sets. This early success allowed FHSU to refine its focus further, shifting towards collecting data on individual course sections. By the end of 2023, we gathered data from 72 percent of university course sections, and assessed 773 course sections.

Professional development for faculty is another crucial aspect of our pursuit of academic excellence. By 2024, we aimed for 75 percent of eligible faculty to receive and utilize funding for professional development through conferences and other external activities. We initially met this target in 2019. However, the COVID-19 pandemic presented significant challenges, causing a drop in conference attendance to 22 percent in 2022 when many activities moved online. In 2024, we saw a recovery to 66 percent, a testament to our resilience and adaptability.

In addition to external development opportunities, the Teaching Innovation and Learning Technologies (TILT) department significantly enhances on-campus professional development activities. The goal was for at least 55 percent of all teaching faculty to engage in on-campus professional development by 2024. This participation increased from 37 percent in 2019 to 58 percent in 2024.

Recognizing the importance of faculty research, a new outcome was adopted in 2021, focusing on funding for faculty research projects. This initiative aimed to foster an environment where innovative research could flourish, contributing to academic and professional growth.

Implementing goal one was not without its challenges. According to our goal chairs, ensuring that efforts impacted all academic programs and students required a focus on programmatic buy-in and sustained prioritization. Town hall sessions with constituents helped to pinpoint critical areas, leading to a strong emphasis on learning outcome assessments and faculty professional development.

The past five years have seen a cultural shift at FHSU, with program assessment becoming a universal practice. More than 80 percent of all programs now engage in annual assessments, contributing to continual program improvement and enhanced student success. Faculty and staff development opportunities have expanded, with significant participation increases thanks to the efforts of the TILT department and other institutional units.

Looking forward, the focus will be on "closing the loop"—using assessment data to drive meaningful changes and improve student achievements.

Drs. Jeffrey Briggs and Bradley Will have acknowledged the critical contributions of key individuals and departments to successfully implementing these initiatives. Andy Cutright, the University Director of Assessment, and the University Assessment Committee played pivotal roles in evolving the academic program assessment process. Similarly, the leadership of Dr. Andrew Feldstein, Nicole Frank, and the TILT staff was instrumental in advancing faculty and staff development opportunities, often leveraging technology to enhance the learning environment.

The progress made under this goal has led to tangible benefits for both students and faculty. As program assessment and professional development become more ingrained in the university's culture, the impact on teaching, learning, community engagement, and scholarly endeavors has been profound.

As we move forward, several new challenges and opportunities will emerge.

“Understanding evolving faculty and staff development needs and staying current with technological advances that impact instructional approaches will be critical,” Dr. Briggs said. “Furthermore, using assessment data to drive tangible changes remains a significant challenge that the university is now better equipped to tackle.”

“Coordinating and prioritizing academic excellence initiatives within the university strategic plan has directly benefited students and faculty, leading to improved outcomes in teaching, learning, community engagement, and scholarly endeavors,” Dr. Will said. “Knowing that the work of all involved in the strategic plan process has had a tangible positive impact is very gratifying.”

Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs Jill Arensdorf eloquently encapsulated the essence of the strategic plan achievement by stating, “The University Strategic Plan focused on an outcomes-based approach that led to thoughtful, strategic decisions each year. I am proud of the work that FHSU faculty, staff, and students contributed to the creation of the plan over five years ago and the implementation of numerous unique strategies and action steps. Reaching our participation goal in program learning outcome assessment ahead of schedule is a testament to the dedication and perseverance inherent in our academic community.”

As FHSU prepares for the next chapter in its strategic journey, the groundwork laid by the 2019-2024 plan positions the university well to continue unlocking untapped potential and driving forward into a future filled with promise and opportunity. More than 80 percent of all programs now engage in annual assessments, contributing to continual program improvement and enhanced student success. Faculty and staff development opportunities have expanded, with significant participation increases thanks to the efforts of the TILT department and other institutional units.Looking forward, the focus will be on "closing the loop"—using assessment data to drive meaningful changes and improve student achievements.Drs. Jeffrey Briggs and Bradley Will have acknowledged the critical contributions of key individuals and departments to successfully implementing these initiatives. Andy Cutright, the University Director of Assessment, and the University Assessment Committee played pivotal roles in evolving the academic program assessment process. Similarly, the leadership of Dr. Andrew Feldstein, Nicole Frank, and the TILT staff was instrumental in advancing faculty and staff development opportunities, often leveraging technology to enhance the learning environment.The progress made under this goal has led to tangible benefits for both students and faculty. As program assessment and professional development become more ingrained in the university's culture, the impact on teaching, learning, community engagement, and scholarly endeavors has been profound.As we move forward, several new challenges and opportunities will emerge.“Understanding evolving faculty and staff development needs and staying current with technological advances that impact instructional approaches will be critical,” Dr. Briggs said. “Furthermore, using assessment data to drive tangible changes remains a significant challenge that the university is now better equipped to tackle.”“Coordinating and prioritizing academic excellence initiatives within the university strategic plan has directly benefited students and faculty, leading to improved outcomes in teaching, learning, community engagement, and scholarly endeavors,” Dr. Will said. “Knowing that the work of all involved in the strategic plan process has had a tangible positive impact is very gratifying.”Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs Jill Arensdorf eloquently encapsulated the essence of the strategic plan achievement by stating, “The University Strategic Plan focused on an outcomes-based approach that led to thoughtful, strategic decisions each year. I am proud of the work that FHSU faculty, staff, and students contributed to the creation of the plan over five years ago and the implementation of numerous unique strategies and action steps. Reaching our participation goal in program learning outcome assessment ahead of schedule is a testament to the dedication and perseverance inherent in our academic community.”As FHSU prepares for the next chapter in its strategic journey, the groundwork laid by the 2019-2024 plan positions the university well to continue unlocking untapped potential and driving forward into a future filled with promise and opportunity. Heart of a Tiger: Celebrating Success: Fort Hays State University’s Strategic Plan 2019-2024

Years ago, when we lived in the country, we and local critters survived an extended 100 degree+ heat wave one droughty July. Because the creek had gone dry, we filled a kiddie pool a couple times a day so wildlife could slake their thirst. Does brought fawns, coyotes and bobcats crept in under cover of darkness while birds, rabbits, and squirrels turned the round tub into a three-ring circus. After filling their tanks, visiting rodents sought cool places to collapse and wait til dusk dropped temperatures. Recent thermometer readings triggered memories as current bunnies and squirrels compete for water at our birdbaths and then zero in to find the coolest crash pads in the yard.

Anyone who’s lived through more than one summer in Western Kansas hopes to complete outdoor chores and watering in the early morning cool. We soak garden, flower beds, and pots to discourage roasting under hot prairie skies. We fill bird baths early, again at noon, at four o’clock, and at dusk. This practice suits our feathered friends, bunnies, and squirrels. During intense heat, especially when it’s windy, they drain six water containers in short time.

The four o’clock filling is our favorite. We make a point, despite pouring sweat, to rock on our shady deck and watch critters savor fresh, cool water. It’s pure entertainment from our seats. Lately, our mother rabbit introduced her 2 juveniles. Energetically, they whip in for a drink, nibble grass or clover, snarf corn and sunflower seeds and then seek the coolest spot to beat the heat.

Their behavior reminded me of those country squirrels who’d gobble a late lunch, slurp a refill, and scamper onto a shaded patio where they flattened themselves on low growing cedar branches or cool bricks. This current yard has no low branches or cool bricks, so present rodents improvise.

One afternoon, those teenager bunnies spent ten minutes juking and jigging about the yard like practicing football players before they settled into their high tea and eventually a flowerbed snooze. I don’t know how rabbits communicate, but somehow mom let her young know they can safely eat and nap close to the deck where green grasses grow, soil is damp and cool, and humans laugh at their antics.

Once they finish snacking, they scout beneath the big ash tree for the best camp site. Because I water in the morning, evaporation has performed its cooling magic. The cottontails each claim a spot, gently pawing out a soft-landing. Once they settle, they remain alert til nature takes its course. Full tummies and soft earth work like a sleeping tonic, forcing bunny eyes to close and heads to nod. Like resistant toddlers, they jerk to attention a time or two but sleep eventually wins.

Who knew sitting outside watching wildlife at 95 degrees in the shade could engage a body so thoroughly. Keep in mind, while bunnies nap, crazy birds zoom in and out of bird baths like they’re at Dulles Airport. Somehow watching them while fluffy butts snooze keeps a gal awake on a scorching afternoon.

MADORIN: Looking for a cool spot

The question “Shall Ellis County, Kansas establish and maintain a county library?” is on the Aug. 6 primary ballot.

On March 19, 2024, the Ellis County Commission approved Resolution No. R-2024-05. This resolution placed the question on the ballot for consideration by voters of Ellis County.

The question will be voted on by registered voters in the city of Victoria and unincorporated areas of Ellis County. The two existing public libraries, Ellis Public Library and Hays Public Library will continue to be supported by their respective municipalities. 

If approved, a County Library Board of five members, appointed by the Ellis County Commission, will be established to maintain and govern the newly created Ellis County Library.

An Ellis County Library Board may contract with existing libraries in Ellis County, including the Hays Public Library and Ellis Public Library, to provide library services to county and area residents. There are no plans to build a new physical library in the county. However, extending services to Victoria, potentially to St. John’s Place, is a real possibility. 

The five-member board must be residents of the taxing district, meaning residents in the city of Victoria and unincorporated areas of Ellis County.

Currently, Ellis County property outside the city limits of Ellis and Hays is assessed a tax funding the Central Kansas Library System (CKLS) with administrative offices at the Great Bend Public Library. In 2023, $292,853.51 was collected from Ellis County for CKLS. It’s estimated that by 2027 less than 25% of the taxes paid by Ellis County taxpayers to CKLS will be returned to Ellis County libraries. 

After establishing the new library taxing district and regularly levying a tax for the Ellis County Library, a petition to withdraw the taxing district from the regional library system may be submitted to the State Library of Kansas Board. If Ellis County’s withdrawal is granted, the taxes assessed in support of CKLS would no longer be paid to CKLS but would, instead, be used locally in support of the Ellis County Library. 

Instead of being controlled by CKLS, the level of taxation and use of funds would be controlled by the Ellis County Library Board.

All registered voters in the city of Victoria and unincorporated areas of Ellis County are eligible to vote on this question regardless of party affiliation. Advanced voting is available now at the Ellis County Administrative Center (718 Main St., Hays, KS) through noon Monday, Aug. 5. Primary Election Day is Tuesday, Aug. 6.

LETTER: Ellis County clarifies county library vote

It’s hard to believe that another year of being an extension agent has flown by! July 25 marks my 2nd anniversary as an extension agent. I just finished up my second year at the Ellis County Fair as well. Thank goodness for wonderful weather as it was another enjoyable week at the fairgrounds.

This year I got to help judge a couple of classes, which was quite an honor. I got to help Neil Younger, Ellis County Commissioner, judge the Special Class which was “Anything Noodles”. We had several entries but the winner went to, Dustin Rajewski, who made a tasty cold pasta salad based off of a Philly cheesesteak sandwich. I also assisted Seamus Holmes, Eagle Scout, who judged the open class scouting division. With a small number of entries, it was a difficult decision! I encourage more scouts to enter their merit badge projects, pinewood derby cars, or collections in the fair.

I also want to send a big thank you to all adults and youth who entered our King Arthur muffin class. We had a nice number of entries. Next year the King Arthur class will be “Yeast Breads”.

My favorite part of the 2024 fair was getting to watch the 4-H Champion Fitting and Showing Contest. I had never seen this competition before but WOW! These kids are amazing. I can’t believe the confidence and joy they have in working with the animals. I was brought to tears when the winners were announced. The junior winners were brothers so they hugged each other. Then two of their sisters won intermediate and finally one of their older sisters won the senior division. Almost the whole family was out there hugging and congratulating each other. It was heartwarming to see the support and love for each other.

One of the highlights of my second year was the Stay Strong, Stay Healthy Level 2 class held at the beginning of 2024. Stay Strong, Stay Healthy is a strength training class for older adults that helps them with balance, strength and flexibility. I had ten women enroll who were also previous Level 1 participants. They all finished! Now that is perseverance! Yes, life happens and throws us curveballs. Some participants had to miss a few classes, but they all finished. Not only did they all finish, but they continued to meet and do the exercises on their own! We had so much fun during the class and I’m so thankful for these ladies that have enriched my life and taught me so much. Another class will begin in early August.

I also brought two other K-State Research and Extension signature programs to the Cottonwood District this year. I have to say Walk with Ease has been my favorite program to offer. Walk with Ease is a program designed to help people with arthritis develop a walking routine. We partnered with Hays Rec to offer this program. Dining with Diabetes was the other new program offered this year. Thanks again to Hays Rec for partnering with us to provide an education and demonstration class to people with diabetes. We plan to continue these programs as time and need allow.

Since my background is in early childhood, I really enjoy supporting child cares in our community as well as programming in libraries and schools. Glo-germ handwashing, blender bike, story walks and organwise are a few of the programs I have to offer for the youth.

Goals for next year include offering Hypertension Awareness Prevention Program (look for that in February 2025) and to increase Maternal Child Health services in Ellis County. Several community partners plan on offering Becoming a Mom prenatal education classes in 2025 to create a circle of support for all families expecting a baby within their peers and with the services available to them in Ellis County. Mental health programs continue to be important in our community. I recently became certified in QPR (Question, Persuade and Refer) which is a suicide prevention program and plan to offer those trainings as well.
