Mary L. Torson, age 80, passed away on Friday, November 3, 2023, at the Park Lane Nursing Home in Scott City, Kansas.&nbsp; She was born on February 15, 1943, in Scott City, Kansas, the daughter of Richard Wayne and Elsie Mae Smith McEachern.&nbsp; 

A lifetime resident of Scott City, Kansas, she was a waitress at Kelly’s Cafe in Scott City for many years where she met her husband, and later was a retail clerk, and a home healthcare provider.

She was a member of the First Christian Church, Pink Ladies, was an avid bowler bowling in several leagues and was a past Girl Scout leader, all in Scott City, Kansas.

On September 15, 1959, she married Martin L. Torson in Juarez, Chihuahua, Mexico.&nbsp; He passed away on December 19, 2010, in Scott City, Kansas.

Survivors include her son Martin, Jr. and Debbie Torson of Alba, Texas, daughters Doreena and Randy Marshall of Garden City, Kansas, Rebecca Tresner of Pratt, Kansas, Joletta and Jack Mize of Basehor, Kansas, Shelly and Darrel Berry of Scott City, Kansas, brothers John and Kay McEachern of Ulysses, Kansas, Richard and Jamie McEachern of Scott City, Kansas, sister Twila McLean of Garden City, Kansas, 11 grandchildren, and 12 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, two grandchildren, and four sisters.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Monday, November 20, 2023, at the First Baptist Church in Scott City, Kansas with Rev. Kyle Evans presiding.

Timothy Mark Parret, 63, passed away November 4, 2023 at his home, Pawnee Rock.

He was born June 3, 1960 the son of Jack and Betty Schell Parret. &nbsp;A lifetime area resident,&nbsp; he was owner and operator of Tim Parret Pipe Company, where he was a truck driver hauling used oilfield structural pipe.

He was a member of the Pawnee Rock Christian Church and a past mayor for the city of Pawnee Rock. &nbsp;He lived in Sedan, Kansas for 13 years where he owned Parret Pipe Company, until moving back to Pawnee Rock in 1999 to continue operating the family business. &nbsp;

One of Tim’s favorite things to do was to go 4-wheeling with his family and his “Pup” dog. &nbsp;He enjoyed going camping and was always known for telling a great story.

On May 11, 1983 he married Rebecca Sue Smith in Louisiana; she survives.

Other survivors include two sons, Travis (Erin) Parret, Kansas City and Nicholas Parret, Pawnee Rock; two daughters, Chasity Parret, Salina and Georgia Parret, Pawnee Rock; two sisters, Marie Johns, Oklahoma and Judy Wheeler, Texas; a sister-in-law, Sandy Parret, Larned; eight grandchildren, Drew Southern, Tanner Parret, Makenzie Frisbie, Hallee Tower, Alexander Parret, Elizabeth Parret, Matthew Parret and Christian Parret; two great-grandchildren; two uncles, David Schell and Curt Schell, one aunt, Debbie Bowman, and nine first cousins and numerous extended family and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Jack and Betty Parret; his step-dad Joseph Billus, two brothers, Robert Parret and Jack Parret, Jr., a granddaughter, Kayla Parret; and two aunts, Sara Mostrom and Kathy Hinkel.

Graveside service will be 10:00 a.m. Thursday at Pawnee Rock Cemetery with Pastor Wade Russell presiding. &nbsp;Visitation will be 9:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Wednesday with family present from 5-7 p.m. at Beckwith Mortuary, Larned. &nbsp;

Iris I. Devine Davis passed away peacefully on Wednesday, October 25, 2023, in&nbsp;Austin, Texas, enveloped by the warmth and love of her family.

Iris was born on June 8, 1937, to Warren and Opal Devine in Glencoe, Oklahoma.&nbsp;

She married Gerald “Dale” Davis on May 11, 1956. Together, they had three&nbsp;beautiful children. Deborah Davis Groves (Randall), Gerald Dale Davis II&nbsp;(Jacqueline “Jackie”) and Michael Dale Davis.

Iris and Dale’s journey together was nothing short of remarkable. They&nbsp;established Great Guns Logging, Digital Logging, Davis Ranch, Davis Feedlot, and&nbsp;other ventures that thrived under their leadership. Iris served as vice president&nbsp;until she and her son, Gary, decided to sell the companies after Dale’s death so&nbsp;she could enjoy the retirement they had looked forward to. 

Iris’ greatest&nbsp;achievement lay in her role as a mother, one she cherished deeply and later as&nbsp;“Mimi.” 

Her legacy continues through her seven beloved grandchildren: Aubrey&nbsp;Groves (Thomas Sitch), RaeChelle R. Davis (Ryan), Jordan Groves, Jerod Davis&nbsp;(Alexis), Everly Groves Petruzzelli (Michael), Austin Davis (fiancé Haley Sieben),&nbsp;and Bryce Davis. She would proudly tell you about her great-grands as well. Ariella&nbsp;Davis (9), Michael Ryan Davis (6), Kai Sitch (3), Aidan Petruzzelli (3 months) and&nbsp;Olivia Davis (2 months).

Iris has been reunited in heaven with her husband Dale Davis, her beloved son&nbsp;Michael Dale Davis, and a host of other loved ones, including her parents and her&nbsp;siblings Edith Flaming, Margie Blair, Irma Glover, John Devine, and Gene Devine.

If there is one word to describe Iris, it would be survivor. After enduring the tragic&nbsp;loss of her youngest son at just 16 and later her husband, both in devastating&nbsp;accidents, she penned a book titled ‘Chasing the Wind’ to offer solace and&nbsp;guidance to those coping with their grief.

She also found healing through music. Her resounding singing voice, often&nbsp;compared to the legendary Patsy Cline, was reaffirmed during a chance encounter&nbsp;with Patsy’s friend on the Queen Mary II in 2010. Despite numerous offers to&nbsp;enter show business, Iris chose to put her family first and instead recorded CDs&nbsp;with her close friend Tim Burleson.

Every interaction with Iris was a lesson in tenacity. From ruling the basketball&nbsp;court in her youth to her indomitable presence on the tennis court, where she&nbsp;earned the nickname “Killer” at the net, and her unforgettable drive on the golf&nbsp;course, Iris embodied the spirit of competition. Her zest for life shone through&nbsp;everything she did – even relishing a game of gin rummy or Farkle. Her&nbsp;grandchildren all knew better than even to attempt to cheat!

Iris brought this same spirit both times she battled and survived breast cancer.&nbsp;She became a beacon of hope for others and a major donor to the Susan G.&nbsp;Komen Foundation.

Iris’ family would like to thank her incredible caretakers, Mary Lou Lugo, Daiana&nbsp;Galvez, and Myrna Berrios of Cella Bella, the Halcyon Hospice team- especially&nbsp;Michelle- and the whole Querencia first-floor staff.

To our Mother and Mimi: We’ll never see a flower without thinking of you. Every&nbsp;ray of sunshine will remind us of your radiant smile, and every melodious tune&nbsp;will bring memories of your enchanting voice. Jerry Keith Dietz – age 85, of Hays, Kansas passed away on Thursday, November 2, 2023, at his home.

He was born May 21, 1938, at WaKeeney, Kansas to Benjamin and Leah (Dietz) Dietz. 

He married Betty (Reitmeyer) on June 6, 1960, in Denver, Colorado.

He was a retired Lieutenant Highway Patrol officer with the state of Kansas for 32 years and retired in 1996. After his retirement he worked five years with the state Inspection of Vehicles Department. 

Jerry grew up in WaKeeney and was a 1956 graduate of Trego Community High School. 

He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, a member of the American Legion, a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, and has lived in Hays since 1980.

Jerry is remembered by his friends and family as having many interests and skills. Golfing was a love for Jerry regardless of his frustration with the game. He loved working with wood, metals, and tinkering with his ’34 Ford Coupe. Jerry’s favorite of all was having his whole family home and sharing memories, playing games, and toasting with cold bottles of beer on the back deck. His family knows he’s wearing his KC Chiefs jersey right now, grumbling about the play calling.

Jerry had several recent years of challenging health issues. His family appreciates all the friends, family and healthcare providers that graciously helped us through this time.

Jerry is survived by his wife, Betty, of the home; his children, Shara Brown and husband, Don, Sedona, AZ; Dora Dietz and Kini Spence, Castle Pines, CO; Connie Applegate and husband, Troy, Celina, TX; LeAnn Adams and husband, Steve, Wichita, KS; Gregory Dietz, Hays, KS; his grandchildren, Taylor Hashenberger; Alex Applegate; Ashley Applegate; Jared Dietz; Jacob Dietz, Ariel Lepard; his sister-in-law, Elda Dietz, WaKeeney, KS.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Ben and Leah Dietz; and his brother, Vernon Dietz.

Funeral Services will be at 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, November 7, 2023, at Trinity Lutheran Church, 2703 Fort Street, Hays, Kansas with Reverend Brenda Rodgers officiating. Military honors will be conducted at the church by the Hays V.F.W. Post No. 9076. The burial will take place at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, at the Kansas Veterans Cemetery at WaKeeney, Kansas.

Visitation will be from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Monday, at Cline’s-Keithley Mortuary of Hays and from 9:00 to 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, at Trinity Lutheran Church.

Frances (Untereiner) Quakenbush, of Hoxie, KS, passed away on October 29, 2023, at the Sheridan County Health Complex in Hoxie, at the age of 96. She was born on November 11, 1926, in Rural Sheridan County to Joseph and Elizabeth (Munsch) Untereiner. 

She married Floyd Quakenbush on February 24, 1955, in Colby, KS. They were blessed with one son, Edward.

Frances grew up in Sheridan County through 8th grade. Her family moved to Arkansas, and she helped her parents. 

She met and married Floyd and moved to Colby, KS where she was a homemaker and raised their son. They moved to Missouri in 1958. Floyd died in 1979 and she moved to Louisiana in 1988, and back to Hoxie in 2006. 

Frances enjoyed cooking, doing crossword puzzles, and loved being around her family.

She is survived by her son, Edward Quakenbush of Hoxie.

Preceding her in death is her husband, Floyd; parents, Joseph and Elizabeth; brother, Paul Untereiner; sisters, Clara Tubbs, Cicelia Ottley, Rose Barr, Josephine Jordon, Edna Camden, and infant sister, Anna.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Friday, November 3, 2023, at 10:30 a.m. at St. Frances Cabrini Catholic Church in Hoxie. Burial will be in the Sacred Heart Cemetery in Park, KS. Betty L. Schroeder, 89, of Colby, died Monday, October 23, 2023. She was born June 16, 1934, in Thomas County, KS to Ira and Lorraine (Tubbs) Stickel. 

Betty was a 1952 graduate of Levant High School. 

On May 23, 1952, she was united in marriage with John Schroeder. Betty was a homemaker and enjoyed living on the farm. The couple retired to Brewster in 2005 and then moved to Colby in 2017. 

The couple loved to travel and spend their winters in Texas. They also enjoyed going to casinos and attending Shriners activities together. Betty was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star. She spent her free time reading, doing puzzles and quilting.

Betty was preceded in death by her parents; husband John; son John Richard “Rick” Schroeder; brother Lloyd Stickel; brother-in-law Robert Schroeder; sister-in-law Mary Garrett; niece Gloria Ribordy and nephew Leon Schroeder.

She is survived by her daughters, Diana (John) Presley, Dodge City, KS and Debra (Bob) Aday, Waxahachie, TX; sisters-in-law, Marcellia Stickel, Lois Anne Frodin and Helen Schroeder; six grandchildren, Jeremy (Janie) Presley, Courtney (Matt) Howard, Ashley (Brock) Seidl, Benjamin (Jeannie) Schroeder, Nicolas (Kelly) Schroeder and Von Aday; twelve great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

Cremation was chosen. The family will receive friends from 5-7:00 p.m. Friday, November 24, 2023, at Baalmann Mortuary, Colby. A memorial service will take place at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, November 25, 2023, at Baalmann Mortuary, Colby.

Agra resident, Carla Orpha Cochrun, passed away on November 1, 2023, at the Good Samaritan Hospital, in Kearney, Nebraska, at the age of 62.

Carla was born on July, 29, 1961, in Norton, Kansas, to her parents Johnie Moss and Nadine (Shoemaker) Moss.

She married Kendal Gary Cochrun on October 10, 1991.

Rosalie Flora Langley, 85, of Colby, died Tuesday, October 31, 2023. She was born February 4, 1938, in Los Angeles, CA, to Jack and Flora (Munoz) Shockley. 

Rose graduated from Whittier High School and attended junior college at Los Angeles City College.

 She moved to Colby in the 1980s where she worked as a para at the Colby Public Schools, receptionist at the NWKS Education Center and as a sales associate at Walmart. 

Rose would do anything for anyone. She enjoyed being around people, attending church and participating in Bible studies. Rose also enjoyed crafts and putting together floral arrangements.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Marion Langley; brother-in-law Michael Sheen and nephew Bill Sheen.

She is survived by her daughter Marlie (Charles) Hamilton; sister Jeannie Sheen; brother Jack (Dana) Shockley; great-grandson Kyrie Hamilton and many nieces and nephews.

Larry Cyril Bliss passed away on October 26, 2023, to Heaven. He was born on October 10, 1940, to parents Cyril and Mary (Makings) Bliss, in Atwood, KS. Larry was the oldest of eight siblings. He descended from a long line of Blisses sailing from England in 1638.

Larry was united in marriage to Sheryl K. Reh on September 13, 1969, in Manhattan, KS. To this union were born three children, Brandon, Brenna and Brook. He was a dearly loved father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend.

Larry had a servant’s heart. He was always willing to help those in need. He would carry heavy items to a picnic. At one church he was on the concrete committee to pave the parking lot. His brother Ron Bliss did call on Larry for home repair advice.

After graduating from Atwood High School in 1958, Larry farmed for eight years. He also enlisted in the Army Reserves during that time. Larry then decided to attend college at Kansas State University for two years. He and Sheryl moved to Stillwater, OK, where Larry attended Oklahoma State University, graduating in 1973 with a degree in mechanized agriculture. Larry was excellent at calculus and statistics.His main work was with cattle feed manufacturing companies. 

He was a feed mill supervisor for Purina cattle feed division and Land of Lakes, in Colorado.

Larry liked to travel when time allowed. He went with Sheryl, the children, and parents. He and Sheryl traveled to all 50 states in the US. They also traveled to England, Germany, France, and Brussels. Like cousin Clark Bliss, he always wondered “What is on the other side of that mountain?"

Larry also enjoyed playing and watching baseball, as did his dad. Larry always hoped the Colorado Rockies would win.

Larry also survived some sad times. He was faithful to visit friends and relatives in the hospital, especially when his younger brother Roger passed away in Kansas. We also remember when full-term, stillborn baby Brook was born- Larry told Sheryl “I’m happy with what I’ve got”, meaning family. They were married 54 years.

God be with you till we meet again. ‘Til we meet at Jesus' feet. Thank you to everyone for all the prayers.

Larry Cyril Bliss

Evans Lawerence Cooley, 82, of Alton, Kansas, passed away Thursday, November 2, 2023, at the Salina Medical Center from complications associated with MDS. He passed away peacefully with his family by his side.

Evans was born on Christmas Day in 1940 on the family farm south of Alton. He was the only child of Everett and Verla (Byfield) Cooley. He often jokingly would say that he had not made it far in life, because he still slept in the bedroom he was born in. 

He graduated from Alton High School in 1959, where he excelled as a running back on the football team. 

He met his wife, Sharon Newton in the summer of 1957 at the Osborne County Fair. They were married on September 11, 1960, and started their family that consisted of a daughter and two sons.

Throughout most of Evans’ life, he worked two sometimes three jobs and he instilled that work ethic in his children. He was a farmer, rancher, farrier, and heavy equipment operator building roads, ponds and terraces. 

After graduating high school, he worked the family farm and later started working for Seaman Construction. In 1980, he bought out the partners and continued as Cooley Construction until reaching his late sixties at which time he retired from the construction business and continued farming and ranching until his death. In 1970, Evans attended and graduated from Lincoln Farrier School and shoed horses during the 70s.

Evans enjoyed hunting, riding horses, watching old westerns, having a whisky with friends or family, and watching football (he was a Dallas Cowboys fan for decades). One of his favorite activities while raising his family in the 70s was participating in the Kansas Western Horseman’s Association (KWHA). He and the family raced horses at KWHA horse shows almost every weekend in the summer. He also served on the KWHA Board of Directors several years and as Past President of the association.

Evans was proceeded in death by his mother and father, Verla and Everett Cooley; son-in-law, Leon Kuhn; and great-grandson, Abrham Kuhn. 

He leaves behind his wife of 63 years, Sharon Cooley; his daughter Tonya Kuhn of Downs, Kansas; sons, Tracy Cooley (Kathy) of Overland Park, Kansas and Troy Cooley (Michelle Mathews) of Alton, Kansas; five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Celebration of Evans’ Life will be held at 10:30 a.m., Monday, November 6, 2023 at Peace Lutheran Church of Natoma. Burial will follow at the Lutheran Cemetery in Natoma, Kansas. Visitation and family greeting friends from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m., Sunday at Peace Lutheran Church. Memorials have been established with Peace Lutheran Church or Rooks County Health Center.

He passed away peacefully with his family by his side.Evans was born on Christmas Day in 1940 on the family farm south of Alton. He was the only child of Everett and Verla (Byfield) Cooley. He often jokingly would say that he had not made it far in life, because he still slept in the bedroom he was born in. He graduated from Alton High School in 1959, where he excelled as a running back on the football team. He met his wife, Sharon Newton in the summer of 1957 at the Osborne County Fair. They were married on September 11, 1960, and started their family that consisted of a daughter and two sons.Throughout most of Evans’ life, he worked two sometimes three jobs and he instilled that work ethic in his children. He was a farmer, rancher, farrier, and heavy equipment operator building roads, ponds and terraces. After graduating high school, he worked the family farm and later started working for Seaman Construction. In 1980, he bought out the partners and continued as Cooley Construction until reaching his late sixties at which time he retired from the construction business and continued farming and ranching until his death. In 1970, Evans attended and graduated from Lincoln Farrier School and shoed horses during the 70s.Evans enjoyed hunting, riding horses, watching old westerns, having a whisky with friends or family, and watching football (he was a Dallas Cowboys fan for decades). One of his favorite activities while raising his family in the 70s was participating in the Kansas Western Horseman’s Association (KWHA). He and the family raced horses at KWHA horse shows almost every weekend in the summer. He also served on the KWHA Board of Directors several years and as Past President of the association.Evans was proceeded in death by his mother and father, Verla and Everett Cooley; son-in-law, Leon Kuhn; and great-grandson, Abrham Kuhn. He leaves behind his wife of 63 years, Sharon Cooley; his daughter Tonya Kuhn of Downs, Kansas; sons, Tracy Cooley (Kathy) of Overland Park, Kansas and Troy Cooley (Michelle Mathews) of Alton, Kansas; five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.Celebration of Evans’ Life will be held at 10:30 a.m., Monday, November 6, 2023 at Peace Lutheran Church of Natoma. Burial will follow at the Lutheran Cemetery in Natoma, Kansas. Visitation and family greeting friends from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m., Sunday at Peace Lutheran Church. Memorials have been established with Peace Lutheran Church or Rooks County Health Center. Evans Lawerence Cooley

Lawrence Jerome “Larry” “L.J.” Krestine, 80, passed away October 31, 2023, at Wheatland Nursing Center of Russell. He was born August 8, 1943, at Great Bend, the son of William J. Krestine, Sr. and Clara M. (Zirnich) Krestine. 

He had been married to Anita (Gibson) and Ann (Hetzel), and later married LaWanna (Slocum) Clark on June 12, 1999, at Holton.&nbsp;

A current Otis resident, Larry was a graduate of Otis High School and Emporia State University, with degrees in mathematics education and business. 

Larry served the community of Holton and the surrounding area as an insurance agent for many years, as well as operating an antique mall. Previous to his move to Holton, he managed the Grand Hotel in Horton, worked as an upper level math teacher, and raised chickens and hogs in rural Huron. Never having idle hands, he always managed to find time to help with wheat harvest on the family farm. 

He was a member of the Horton Jaycees, Holton/Jackson County Chamber of Commerce and the Otis Happy Age Senior Group and served as various officer positions, including president of the Jaycees and Happy Age Group. 

Larry enjoyed fishing, hunting, bowling, refinishing antique furniture, playing cards and games, telling jokes and stories, KU basketball and Kansas City Chiefs football.&nbsp;

Survivors include his wife, LaWanna of the home; three daughters, Marsha Krestine of Kansas City, Mo., Michelle “Shelly” May of Bonner Springs and Marie Gardner of Palmer, Alaska; four stepchildren, Kathy Groth (Les) of Cloquet, Minn., Julie Kincaid of Claremore, Okla., Lonnie Morris (Lynne) of Topeka and Ryan Clark of Easton; a sister, Evelyn “Sally” Medlock of Great Bend; four grandchildren, Trey May, Olivia May, Coyd Gardner and Cyla Gardner; 11 stepgrandchildren; and 27 stepgreat-grandchildren.&nbsp;

He was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Anita; a stepdaughter, Sheila Carpenter; a brother, William “Bill” Krestine; two sisters, Ramona Torrez and Evangeline “Sherry” Jobes; three stepgrandchildren, David Groth, Christopher Clark and Brianna M. Clark. &nbsp;

Visitation will be held from 9:00 to service time, Wednesday, November 8, 2023, at Nicholson-Ricke Funeral Home, 415 N. Main St., Hoisington, with family to receive friends from 1:00 to service time, and memorial service to be held at 2:00 p.m., with Stan Ewy, SAM presiding. Lawrence Jerome Krestine

Joseph “Joe” Allen Murphy, 85, passed away October 31, 2023, at Via Christi Village-Ridge, Wichita, Kansas after battling prostate cancer for a year and a half. He was born on September 20, 1938, in Great Bend, Kansas, to James and Alma (Riney) Murphy. 

On September 11, 1965, he married Roma Lee Riner in Great Bend, Kansas.

Joe was a hard worker who led by example. After his father passed away from a tragic accident when he was 12 years old, Joe assumed many responsibilities not normally required of a boy of such a young age. He worked on the family farm, went to school, played sports, and helped support his large family, including his invalid older brother and his two baby sisters. 

A lifetime resident of Great Bend prior to moving to Goddard in 2022, Joe served the country overseas in the United States Air Force from 1958-1962. After his honorable discharge, he obtained his bachelor’s degree in business administration from Fort Hays State University, where he met his future wife of 58 years, Roma. 

For 30 years, he worked as a technical systems coordinator for Midwest Energy, before “retiring,” only to spend the next 20 years as a custodian at Eisenhower Elementary School doing two of his favorite things: encouraging and building up kids and working hard. &nbsp;When asked by his children when he was going to finally retire, his response was always “in another two years.” He kept “two-yearing it” until he turned 77.&nbsp;

Joe was always a champion for the little guy and had a huge and generous heart. He was a devoted husband to Roma as they constantly spent time with their kids and grandkids. &nbsp;He was a lifetime blood donor, contributing well over eight gallons of blood to help others. He was a member of the Prince of Peace Parish and the American Legion. 

He never took himself too seriously, and liked to spread his hard-earned knowledge through multiple “Joe Murphyisms”: “Just hold your head high and walk fast.” “Keep your ears open and your mouth shut.” “Doing that can cause your kids to be born naked.” “It’ll put hair on your chest.” “It’s good to have some sweat run down the crack of your hind end.” “Now stay out of jail…” Those are but a sample of the wisdom he liked to share and smiles he liked to create. If you ever had the opportunity to take his order at a restaurant, you probably had the chance to tease him back when he said his favorite one, “I’d like an iced-tea, in a clean glass.” 

He loved his dogs, but above all, he loved his wife and kids, &nbsp;helping his kids with their lawn mowing business, watching their sports competitions and debate tournaments, and spending time with them and the grandkids.

Survivors include his wife, of the home. &nbsp;His children are a daughter, Kelly Sue (Mark) Disque of Wylie, Texas; son Patrick (Theresa) Murphy of Wichita, Kansas; son Sean (Alicia) Murphy of Papillion, Nebraska; and son Mark (Kimberly) of Olathe, Kansas. &nbsp;His thirteen grandchildren are Adam (Bethany), Brendan, and Kaitlyn Disque; Chelsea (Jordan) Mellinger, Conor, Ryan, and Shauna Murphy; Benjamin and Zane Murphy; and McKay, Gunner, Josie, and Taggart Murphy. &nbsp;His two step grandchildren are Cooper and Carli Dunham. &nbsp;He has six great-grandchildren. &nbsp;His sisters are Janice Sis of Bryan, Texas, and Rita (Joe) Buchanan of Council Grove, Kansas. &nbsp;His brothers-in-law are George Tooley of Greeley, Colorado, and Dan Bernard of Omaha, Nebraska. &nbsp;His sister-in-law is Rose Murphy of Great Bend, Kansas. &nbsp;He has numerous nieces and nephews.&nbsp;

He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Richard “Dick” Murphy and Michael Murphy; two sisters, Joyce Tooley and Barbara Bernard; a brother-in-law, Ray Sis; a niece, Katie Gant; and a nephew, Chris Tooley.

Visitation will be held from noon to 8:00 p.m., Tuesday, November 7, 2023, with family to receive friends from 5:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., and vigil at 7:00 p.m., all at Bryant Funeral Home. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, November 8, 2023, at St. Patrick Catholic Church with Father Aneesh Parappanattu presiding. Interment will be at Great Bend Cemetery North with military honors presented by McConnell Air Force Base.

Joseph Allen Murphy

Born in the early morning hours of December 1, 1954, and raised on the great plains of Hays, Kansas, Sherrie Roth Cronin peacefully exhaled her last breath on the night of October 23, 2023. She was surrounded by love, in the mountains of North Carolina, after a hard fought battle with cancer.

She was an engaging child, curious about our planet and the limitless mysteries of space. She also had a vivid imagination and used it, from an early age, to create expansive new worlds, twisting plots and intriguing characters, through her gift of storytelling. That set the stage. 

Before graduating from&nbsp;Hays High School in 1972, she was a permanent fixture on the Honor Roll,&nbsp;editor of the school newspaper, star on the debate team, and won the state championship for extemporaneous speaking.

She published a short story in Isaac Asimov's science fiction magazine at the age of 21, received a degree in journalism from Northwestern University and a degree in geology from The Colorado School of Mines, then canoed 500 miles down the Coppermine River in 1978.

This was t1e launch pad for a decades long career as a geophysicist, interpreting seismic data, and spending time out on the rigs, all while showing up tirelessly for her husband, three children and parents. Her career took her from Chicago, Illinois to Golden, Colorado to Baton Rouge, Louisiana to Fort Worth and Houston, Texas, before retiring in Black Mountain, North Carolina.&nbsp;

To round out this remarkable life, Sherrie traveled extensively to 46 countries, earned her private pilot's license, achieved the status of solo skydiver, drove cross-country to Burning Man, volunteered for a trio of meaningful causes; the local library, a domestic violence hotline, and the Science Fiction &amp; Fantasy Writers Association. And she still managed to find the time, energy, and inspiration to fulfill one of her greatest, lifelong passions ...  storytelling,&nbsp;as she proudly self-published 12 full-length novels.

Sherrie is loved and survived by her husband of 42 years, Kevin Cronin of Black Mountain, NC, her sister, June Roth Hanson (Gary) of Galena, Illinois, her three children, Francis-Casey Cronin of San Francisco, CA, Shenandoah Cronin Reyna (John) of Dallas, Texas and Emerald Cronin of Chicago, Illinois. 

She is preceded in death by her mom and dad, Mary Jane Von Feldt Roth and Francis Joseph Roth, both of Hays, Kansas.

Sherrie was a wonderful mom, sister, wife, daughter, and friend. She was fierce, interesting, kind, curious, driven, brilliant, creative and generous. She will be missed more than words can express. An inquisitive scientist, eloquent storyteller and avid adventurer, she gave of her time and her talents to help make this a better world.

Sherrie Roth Cronin

Harold Robert Burnett passed away peacefully in his sleep on November 1, 2023. He was born on April 22, 1932, the only child of James Robert and Bryonia Adelia Pearce Burnett in Utica, Kansas. By 1937, the young family moved to Scott City, Kansas.

At age five he had a paper route. As a young boy, he also raised chickens and a milk cow. He later began tenant farming in Scott County at age 15 to work his way through college. He earned Eagle Scout.

At Scott Community High School, he quarterbacked the varsity football team and played state-caliber tennis. He later attended Fort Hays State University where he earned an ag science degree, played championship tennis, and served as student body president.

Harold married Jacquelyn Jean Patton of Scott City in 1952. They raised their four children together in Scott County. 

Harold taught and coached at Shallow Water High School and Scott Community High School. He taught shop, vocational agriculture and all else except for art and English. 

In his 21-year coaching career, his basketball teams averaged better than an 85% win rate. At Shallow Water, with an average of 21 boys combined in all four grades of high school, his cross country program produced four state champions, one national champion, and one national record holder. An entire generation of his athletes to this day simply refer to him as “coach.”

In 1972 to further pursue his lifelong love of agriculture, Harold departed from the teaching and coaching ranks to build and operate feed yards full-time and farm. An outdoorsman at heart, he was a passionate fly fisherman and hunter. While hunting in the Yukon Territory, a grizzly bear charged him and his guide at close range. With seconds to spare, he dropped the bear.

In 2000, he married Bonnie Ledbetter in Scott City, Kansas. In August of 2023, they moved to Great Bend, Kansas. Through his last days with her by his side, he affectionately referred to her as “Bonnie girl.” Their constant devotion and love are an inspiration to us. &nbsp;

Harold has four children and two stepchildren: Dak Burnett (Pat), M.D., of Kansas City, Missouri; Bradley Burnett (Kim), attorney, of Wichita, Kansas; Greg Burnett (Dolly), CPA of Phoenix, Arizona; and Dion Burnett Harmon, a national sales manager, of Erie, Pennsylvania; Steve Wiles (Marcie), a manager for Dillons, of Hutchinson, Kansas; and Sandi Oberle (Raymond), purveyor of sand and gravel in Claflin, Kansas. Harold and Bonnie share 21 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren. 

He is preceded in death by his parents and one grandchild.

Harold was a master storyteller of biblical proportions. Once he had an audience, he was oft heard to say “Just one more quick story.” He loved to explain his basketball offense to anyone who would listen, often rewinding a basketball play on the TV and playing it over and over pointing out nuances that most everyone else could not see. Harold was a lifetime learner.&nbsp; Once he dug into a new topic, he drilled in deeply until he exhausted it. Born into a family of teachers, he raised his children to be the same.

In his final days, Harold continued to reveal his deep personal character. He remained positive and continued to practice his one-of-a-kind sense of humor and build up those around him. He said, “You may not know this about me, but I have as much faith as anyone.” We all love him and miss hearing his stories already. The man who is larger than life has passed on. Those of us who remain now move forward to carry on. He has prepared us well.

Harold Burnett’s funeral will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, November 6, 2023, at the Community Christian Church in Scott City, Kansas with Rev. Scott Wagner and Rev. Tyler Ball presiding.

 </figure>April 22, 1932 - November 1, 2023Harold Robert Burnett passed away peacefully in his sleep on November 1, 2023. He was born on April 22, 1932, the only child of James Robert and Bryonia Adelia Pearce Burnett in Utica, Kansas. By 1937, the young family moved to Scott City, Kansas.At age five he had a paper route. As a young boy, he also raised chickens and a milk cow. He later began tenant farming in Scott County at age 15 to work his way through college. He earned Eagle Scout.At Scott Community High School, he quarterbacked the varsity football team and played state-caliber tennis. He later attended Fort Hays State University where he earned an ag science degree, played championship tennis, and served as student body president.Harold married Jacquelyn Jean Patton of Scott City in 1952. They raised their four children together in Scott County. Harold taught and coached at Shallow Water High School and Scott Community High School. He taught shop, vocational agriculture and all else except for art and English. In his 21-year coaching career, his basketball teams averaged better than an 85% win rate. At Shallow Water, with an average of 21 boys combined in all four grades of high school, his cross country program produced four state champions, one national champion, and one national record holder. Timothy W. Hendrich, 93, passed away Friday, October 13, 2023, at his home in Harlan, Kansas.

Timothy Winslow Hendrich was born June 18, 1930 in a rural home in Sylvan Grove, Kansas, the 6th child of Louis John and Marie Kejr Hendrich. 

At a young age, with the instruction of his parents and Sunday school teacher, Tim realized he was a sinner who needed forgiveness and asked Jesus Christ, who died on the cross as a payment for his sins, to be his Lord and Savior.

In 1946, his parents moved to the Portis, Kansas area where they continued farming. Tim graduated from Portis High School in 1949. He served in the U.S. Army in 1952-53, stationed in Austria during the Korean War. After receiving an honorable discharge from the army, he enrolled in Omaha Baptist Bible College and graduated in 1959 with a three-year Bible degree.

On October 14, 1960, Tim was united in marriage to Naomi Jean Olson of Douds, Iowa.&nbsp; 

They actively farmed in the Portis area with the help of their sons Tim and Terrel until well after retirement. He immensely enjoyed studying and using the latest technology in farm equipment. His favorite activity was anything involving his sons and having "fun times," such as go-cart design and dirt biking.

His favorite activity was anything involving his sons and having "fun times," such as go-cart design and dirt biking.Tim’s love for God’s Word was evidenced by being a faithful member and serving in Grace Baptist Church of Smith Center, Kansas.&nbsp; He enjoyed investing in the youth by teaching God’s Word to the junior high and high school boys on Sunday mornings for several years.&nbsp; He also led the youth group on Sunday evenings which included exciting youth activities.&nbsp; Listening to AWANA Sparks (K-2nd graders) quoting Bible verses on Wednesday nights was a highlight. His skill for design was especially showcased in the AWANA Club floats for the annual Old Settlers’ Day Parade in Smith Center. A desire to be involved in other Christian ministries, led to the opportunity for him to be a founding board member of Red Cliff Bible Camp in Pinedale, Wyoming.In their home, with his wife, Naomi, and his sons Tim and Terrel nearby, Tim W. Hendrich was called home into the presence of His Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on October 13, 2023. The following day, he and Naomi would have celebrated their 63rd wedding anniversary.&nbsp; He was laid to rest, with immediate family attending, on October 15, 2023 at the Hammond Cemetery, Harlan. The local VFW chapter presented military funeral honors, including the presentation of the American flag to his widow, Naomi.&nbsp;He was preceded in death by his parents, Marie and Louis Hendrich as well as his brothers, Samuel (Portis), Theophil, (Portis), Daniel (California), Joseph (Colorado), and Paul (Portis); sister, Lydia, Portis; and granddaughter, Ava Jean, Portis. He is survived by his wife Naomi and sons, Tim (Marthalyn), Harlan; Terrel (Melodie), Texas; siblings, Clarence (Willa Jodeman), Portis; and Harry (Marjorie Bursell), Smith Center.Tim rejoiced that all eleven of his grandchildren have trusted Jesus Christ as their Savior:&nbsp; Abigayel (Joshua) Crompton, Pennsylvania; Timbrely (Daniel) Anderson, Massachusetts; Cherith, Brooke, SaraLyn, Christal, Jordan, Jared, Kailyn, Trenton and Kylie Hendrich, Texas. He was blessed with a great-granddaughter, Madelyn, of Pennsylvania.Memorial services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, December 2, 2023, at Grace Brethren Church, Portis, Kansas.&nbsp; Memorial donations can be made to Red Cliff Bible Camp, P.O.
