John Edwin Grummon, 80, passed away Nov. 21, 2023 at his home in Great Bend, Kan. He was born Apr. 2, 1943 in Omaha, Neb., the son of American Baptist Missionaries Daniel and Elda (Goff) Grummon. 

&nbsp;After graduating in 1965 from Ottawa University, he married DeeAnne Baldwin. &nbsp;

John graduated from Central Baptist Theological Seminary in 1969, then served as a pastor at First Baptist Church, Marysville, Kan. for five years, and at the Beloit-Simpson Baptist Parish for 22 years. &nbsp;In 1996, he began a new career as a hospital and hospice chaplain. &nbsp;John and DeeAnne moved to Great Bend, Kan., where he served as chaplain for CKMC and Golden Belt Home and Hospice until retiring in 2014. &nbsp;John was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather. &nbsp;

&nbsp;January 9, 1941 - November 18, 2023

Donna Mae (Kraft) Haffner, surrounded by her loving family, peacefully joined her Lord and Savior on Saturday, November 18, 2023.Donna was born to John and Leoba (Mense) Kraft on January 9, 1941, at the family’s farm north of Park, Kansas. 

She was the third of five children. Donna attended school in Park and following graduation, attended and graduated from Parks Business College in Denver, Colorado. 

During her time in college, she began dating a young farmer from just up the road of her childhood home. George Haffner won her heart, they married and settled into farm life north of Park, Kansas. She took pride in their farm's homeplace and worked hard to keep it nearly immaculate.

Soon, two children, Charles (Chuck) and Kathleen (Kathy), joined the union. Next in the pack were Gerald (Jerry), Eugene, and Mary. A “late-comer” named Julie arrived receiving the title of "baby of the family." Much to everyone’s surprise, Ryan later stole that title, as the youngest of seven, and was the tiebreaker in the count battle of girls versus boys. It was some of these same blessings from heaven, who shall remain nameless, that contributed to Donna's gray hairs.

Donna was a devoted mother and poured her life into not just her biological children but many nieces, nephews, and friends of her kids. She was known to pack up the children in the family car and take day trips across Kansas exploring and learning together. Sometimes friends and cousins were included in the travel, and it was fortunate that these adventures occurred before the days of seatbelt laws. Donna encouraged her children and others to be their best and reach for goals that some may have deemed too difficult. She was often seen at events cheering for her kids and the home team. 

Donna's love was unconditional, she continually prayed for her children, who eventually grew up and had families of their own. The resulting grandchildren were her pride and joy.

If raising a large family wasn't enough, Donna would use her time and talents to serve the community, and her car's odometer reflected that. Some of her many activities included membership of the Sacred Heart parish's altar society, lectoring and singing at church. Donna served multiple terms on the Wheatland school board. She assisted local elderly, for many years, through FHSU's Senior Companion program. She became a CNA at the Hoxie hospital. Donna was even an entrepreneur and owned "Donna's Noodles," supplying local businesses and families with homemade egg noodles. Her social and volunteer calendar was full. Later in life she took it upon herself to coordinate social activities at the Grinnell senior center and her retirement home in Salina. 

She was an independent woman who wasn't afraid to defy societal norms, was a lifelong learner, enjoyed traveling, and spending time with friends and family. Donna was innovative, even in later years, like when she fabricated and executed an escape from her retirement home at the start of Covid, much to her family's dismay, which in the end proved to be a brilliant plan for her sanity and well-being.

While she lived a beautiful life, it wasn't always easy. She experienced deaths of beloved family and friends, challenges of weather and markets out of her control on the farm, and other issues that life threw her way. She never lost hope or her positive attitude. She expected nothing less from her family. In later years, she continued to be a shining example of honoring one's marriage vows as she faithfully served her husband George, of forty-eight years, as he suffered dementia. She stayed true until the end.

Time is a thief and recently stole some of her independence and health she once knew. She spent the last six years of her life at the Presbyterian Manor in Salina. “The Manor” proved to be the perfect place for her and she quickly became acquainted with her fellow residents, caring staff, and participated in a variety of engaging activities. With the help of her family, friends, and transportation of Presbyterian Manor, she was able to remain active outside the home as her health would allow. 

Cards became a favorite pastime, and she was highly competitive in games like "pitch" and "kings in the corner." "Booyah!" was her battle cry when she smoked someone after a lively card game. She played to win!

To know Donna was to love her. To be known by Donna was to be loved by her. She truly knew no strangers and the world is a better place because of her. We will miss the twinkle in her eye, contagious laugh, wisdom, and love.

Most important to Donna, besides her family and friends, was her Catholic faith. She was a devoted follower of Christ and ensured these eternal values were instilled in her children. It's because of this faith, we are assured this goodbye is temporary and we look forward to being reunited with her one day.

She was preceded in death by husband George Haffner, her parents John Kraft and Leoba Mense Kraft, brothers Donald, Robert, and Ronald Kraft, and sister Kathy Boxler-Denning.

Donna is survived by her four sons, Charles Haffner (Lisa), Wichita, Gerald Haffner (Joan), Hutchinson, Eugene Haffner (Melissa), Overland Park, and Ryan Haffner (Laura), Hays; three daughters, Kathleen Schmidtberger (Arnold), Salina, Mary Rossman (Jason), Hoisington, and Julie Carroll (Brian), Great Bend; nineteen grandchildren, one great-grandchild on the way, and many nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends from 3-4:00 p.m. with a vigil at 4:00 p.m., Sunday, November 26, 2023, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Park, KS. A Memorial Mass will take place at 10:00 a.m., with a rosary at 9:30 a.m., Monday, November 27, 2023, at Sacred Heart Church, with burial in the church cemetery. 

Memorials may be made to Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Park or the Salina Presbyterian Manor and sent in care of Baalmann Mortuary, PO Box 391, Colby, KS 67701.

Donna Mae Haffner (Kraft)

On the afternoon of November 19, 2023, Betty Louise Toot passed away at the age of 98, in Amarillo, TX. Born on July 16, 1925, in Belpre, KS, Betty was the ninth child of Maurice and Mabel Montgomery. With 11 sisters and three brothers, there was always someone to play with and Betty remained close to her siblings throughout their lives. 

She graduated from Belpre High School and sometime after met Calvin L. Toot at a Hug and Stomp Dance held at the community center. 

Calvin enlisted and Betty followed him to San Francisco where they married on August 2, 1945. A young war bride, Betty worked as both a waitress and a telephone operator while Calvin was a gunner on the USS Fair in the Pacific Fleet. Deployment also took them to Seattle, WA until Calvin’s release from the Navy when they returned to Larned, KS to work the family farm. The Toots also resided in Hill City, KS and then Liberal, KS where Betty lived for more than 56 years. She worked in the cafeteria at West Junior High which allowed her to be home when her children were not in school. After they were grown, she went to work at Southwest Medical Center as a cook and was promoted to supervisor. She worked early mornings and delighted in the days when her visiting grandchildren would stop by to eat breakfast or lunch at the hospital cafeteria with her. She was then free to spend the afternoon and evenings with her family, cooking for them, taking an evening walk, and hearing about their lives. 

After retirement, Betty enjoyed traveling to visit her family, her daily walks, and volunteering at the hospital gift shop. A lifelong gardener, Betty cared for her flower beds and continued to mow the lawn herself until her move to Amarillo, TX.&nbsp;

Betty is preceded in death by her husband, Calvin L Toot. They had been married for 55 years. 

She is survived by her daughters Linda (Bill) Morlan of Overland Park, KS; Judy (Mike) Connelly of Amarillo, TX; David Toot of Granbury, TX; and Colin (Cindy) Toot of Kingsland, TX and her sister Marietta Snodgrass of Pinole, CA. Betty was proud of her 16 grandchildren, 24 great-grandchildren and six great-great-grandchildren.&nbsp;

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in her honor to further macular degeneration research through the Brightfocus Foundation (brightfocus.org/macular). 

Betty will be laid to rest at a graveside service in Belpre Cemetery (KS) on Saturday, November 25, 2023, at 1 p.m. Honorary pallbearers are her grandsons: Brian Mitchell, Joshua Connelly, Shawn Toot, Jeremy Berry, Toby Lohman Fuller, Daniel Connelly, Cameron Toot, Zachary Toot, and Adam Brown. 

A woman of strength, love, humor and enduring grace, Betty’s memory will forever live on in the hearts of those who knew her. We find solace knowing that she is now in the comforting embrace of Jesus.

Benjamin R. Blood, aged 28, passed away on Saturday, November 18, 2023, in Barton County. Born on December 15, 1994, in Garden City, Kansas, Ben was a proud graduate of Garden City High School in 2012.

Growing up in Garden City, Ben was deeply involved in local sports, excelling in football during high school and briefly at Garden City Community College. His entrepreneurial spirit shone through his work at Big L Rental &amp; Sales, where he began his employment at the age of 14. Beyond his professional pursuits, Ben found joy in hunting and crafting custom firearms during his leisure time. 

During his time at Big L, Ben grew the business and became a prominent figure in the community. His remarkable generosity and kindness were as towering as his stature – a true friend always ready to lend a helping hand. "Give it to the big guy" became a phrase associated with Ben.

Ben is survived by his mother, Julie, and stepfather Darrell Grubbs; his father, Calvin, and stepmother Tessa Blood; and a loving extended family, including siblings Sam Blood, Matthew Blood, Caitlynn Elisabeth, Tyler Stutzman, Emily Stutzman, Skycha Klassen, Shelbi and Devin Nolde, and Bryce Grubbs and Alicia Schoonover, along with numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, and a host of friends.

Funeral services to celebrate Ben's life will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Monday, November 27, 2023, at Cornerstone Church in Garden City, Kansas. Following the service, burial will take place promptly in Valley View Cemetery.

Benjamin R. Blood

&nbsp;James E. Lorimor, Sr., 83, died Monday November 20, 2023 at Lane County Hospital in Dighton, Kansas. He was born February 25, 1940 in Norton, Kansas, the oldest son of Cecil Earl and Betty Jean (Allen) Lorimor.

After high school, Jim worked at his dad’s sheet metal business in Norton before beginning his career as a mechanic at Kansas Department of Transportation Norton. He transferred to KDOT Ulysses in 1963 and then to KDOT Dighton in 1964, before retiring as equipment shop superintendent in 1995. After retirement, Jim worked part-time at several local auto parts stores before creating Lorimor Enterprises. He specialized in radiator repair but was a skilled welder of everything metal.

Jim married Nelda Kay McKie in Norton on June 18, 1961. They divorced in 1976 and on December 30, 1979, he married Deborah Lee Back. 

Jim was a member of the American Motorcycle Association and raced motorcycles competitively across the state with a tight-knit group of friends. He raced with various number plates through the years, achieving as high as 2nd place in points for the 1968 AMA Kansas Open Class and as high as 3rd in the nation in 1969. His stepmom hand-painted his full-face helmet that made him easily recognized at the track. He built many motorcycle frames for other racers through the years and has a frame on display at the Kansas Motorcycle Museum in Marquette, Kansas. The frame he built was used as the oil tank.

 After giving up racing motorcycles, he built and raced a Mopar hobby stock car. One of his highlights was winning the trophy dash at Lane County Speedway and got his photo taken with the Budweiser girls. 

Jim enjoyed hunting and fishing, playing on a league pool team, and playing golf; however, Jim saw no need to purchase golf balls when he could just as well collect them from around the local golf course and lay claim to them with his infamous JEL. 

Above all, Jim loved his family and cherished time spent with each of them.

Survivors include his children- Christine and Erin Carter of Dighton, Kalene Yakel of Lakin, James Jr. and Annita Lorimor of Dighton, Brandon Lorimor of Garden City, and Michael and Stephanie Lorimor of Maize; companion- Patti Wagner of Dighton; 12 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren, one great-great-grandchild; brother- John and Iva Lorimor of Wichita, sister-in-law- Debbie Lorimor of Norton, along with numerous nieces and nephews.

 </figure>February 25, 1940 - November 20, 2023&nbsp;James E. Lorimor, Sr., 83, died Monday November 20, 2023 at Lane County Hospital in Dighton, Kansas. He was born February 25, 1940 in Norton, Kansas, the oldest son of Cecil Earl and Betty Jean (Allen) Lorimor.After high school, Jim worked at his dad’s sheet metal business in Norton before beginning his career as a mechanic at Kansas Department of Transportation Norton. He transferred to KDOT Ulysses in 1963 and then to KDOT Dighton in 1964, before retiring as equipment shop superintendent in 1995. After retirement, Jim worked part-time at several local auto parts stores before creating Lorimor Enterprises. He specialized in radiator repair but was a skilled welder of everything metal.Jim married Nelda Kay McKie in Norton on June 18, 1961. They divorced in 1976 and on December 30, 1979, he married Deborah Lee Back. Jim was a member of the American Motorcycle Association and raced motorcycles competitively across the state with a tight-knit group of friends. He raced with various number plates through the years, achieving as high as 2nd place in points for the 1968 AMA Kansas Open Class and as high as 3rd in the nation in 1969. His stepmom hand-painted his full-face helmet that made him easily recognized at the track. He built many motorcycle frames for other racers through the years and has a frame on display at the Kansas Motorcycle Museum in Marquette, Kansas. The frame he built was used as the oil tank. After giving up racing motorcycles, he built and raced a Mopar hobby stock car. One of his highlights was winning the trophy dash at Lane County Speedway and got his photo taken with the Budweiser girls. Jim enjoyed hunting and fishing, playing on a league pool team, and playing golf; however, Jim saw no need to purchase golf balls when he could just as well collect them from around the local golf course and lay claim to them with his infamous JEL. Darlene M. Walters, age 85 of Hays, Kansas passed away on Wednesday, November 8, 2023, at Wesley Medical Center in Wichita, Kansas.

She was born April 30, 1938, in Hays, Kansas to Albert and Wilhemena (Graf) Walters. 

Darlene was a CNA at the Eddy Clinic in Hays for over 50 years and retired in 2005. 

She grew up in Hays and was a 1956 graduate of Girls Catholic High School. She was a member of Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church. She enjoyed physical fitness workouts, reading, and cooking.

Darlene is survived by her sister, Becky Morris and husband, Roger, Plainville, KS; her brother-in-law, Jack McGivern, Topeka, KS; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Albert and Wilhelmena; her brother, Tom Walters and his wife, Mary; and her sister, Margie McGivern.

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:00 a.m. Monday, November 27, 2023, at Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church, 18th and Vine, Hays, Kansas with Father Nick Parker officiating.

The burial will be in Saint Joseph Cemetery, Hays Kansas.

ELLINWOOD — Patrick (Pat) Dean Streck, born April 27th, 1950 to Leonard and Joan (Powers) Streck, departed this life in true outdoorsman fashion and of natural causes, on a final pheasant hunt with friends, Nov. 18th, 2023. He is preceded in death by the pheasant he had just harvested.

Pat proudly served in both the Nebraska and Kansas National Guard, obtaining the rank of staff sergeant, carrying on a family tradition of military service that extends back to the Spanish-American War.

A Great Bend High School alumnus and former FHSU student, Pat pursued a successful career in sales. Starting as a traveling salesman for Brown &amp; Williamson Tobacco Co., he retired a very successful figure within the Kansas Aagribusiness community. Even after retirement, Pat remained dedicated to the farming community, often working for some of the same people he once called on as customers, but now calls friends. 

Pat’s love of the outdoors is only surpassed by his love of family. On Jan. 4, 1986, Pat married Cindie Moran and raised four (4) sons, Stuart, Timothy, Kelly and Scott. Together Pat and Cindie dedicated their lives to seeing their boys grow and prosper into men with love of God, family and country. Pat served as an elder of St. John’s Lutheran Church, was a competitor in the local trap shooting league, he volunteered with 4-H youth shooting sports and taught many years as a Kansas Hunters Education instructor for the state of Kansas.

He is survived by his wife of 37 years, Cindie; his sons Stuart (Jen) of Johns Creek, Ga., Timothy (Tyra) of Newton, Kelly (Katie) of Lansing and Scott (Amy) of Spring Hill. Pat leaves behind seven (7) grandchildren, his pride and pure joy: Kristian (Johns Creek, Ga.), Alexandria and Vaughn (Newton), James and Ella (Lansing) and Claire and Natalie (Spring Hill); his brother Kevin Brown (Tucson, Ariz.); brother-in-law and sister-in-law Grant and Rhonda Gaede. 

He is preceded in death by his parents, Leonard and Joan (Powers) Streck; and his special “adoptive” parents, Lyman and Esther Kruckenberg.

John “Jay” Joseph Walsh, Jr., 70, of Almena, KS passed away November 20, 2023 at his home. He was born July 9, 1952 in Chelsea, MA to John Joseph, Sr. and Maria Ida (Eibelhauser) Walsh.

Jay grew up in Darien, CT and graduated from Darien High School in 1970. 

 married Gayle Tripp on September 4, 1993 in Darien, 

CT. While in Connecticut he worked for Reliable Heating and Air in Norwalk and as a travel agent. While they lived in Mountain View, WY he was a real estate agent, owned Big Jays Heating and Air Conditioning and was a maintenance supervisor at Western Wyoming Community College. Jay and Gayle moved to Almena in 2006. He worked at the Norton Correctional Facility as a maintenance supervisor until his retirement.

Jay loved helping people and was a volunteer in the 1980s for the Connecticut Special Olympics and more recently the Relay for Life. He enjoyed being outdoors fishing, deer hunting, or camping and loved taking photographs of the outdoors. Jay was a very talented skier and met Gayle while both were members of the Ski Bears of Connecticut. Whether camping or at home he loved smoking meat, he even made his own marinades and rubs. Jay was “Jack of all trades.” While HVAC, electrical and plumbing work were his main talents, he could fix and work on anything that needed fixed. 

Jay loved sharing laughs with his friends, adventures with Gayle, and taking their dog Calli anywhere he could.

Jay is survived by his wife, Gayle of the home; son, Sam (Pam) Walsh of West Norwalk, CT and grandchildren: Joshua and Alison. 

He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Maria Walsh.

Marjorie Diane Rodriquez, 66, passed away on November 21, 2023, surrounded by loved ones at her home in Great Bend, Kansas. She was born on August 6, 1957, in Wichita, Kansas, to Harold and Sue (Smith) Fortney. 

In 2002, she married Dave Rodriquez in Rocky Ford, Colorado.&nbsp;

A resident of Great Bend, coming from Rose Hill, Kansas, Marjorie formerly worked in catering and as a secretary. She enjoyed crafts, specifically making door wreaths, and spending time with her family.

Survivors include her husband of the home; three daughters, Jennifer (David) Borowski of Henderson, Nevada, Kristina (Jesse) Staab of Auburn, Kansas; and Diana (Marci) Devera of Fairfield, California; twelve grandchildren; one great-grandchild; four brothers-in-law, Mike, Fred, Paul and Gary Rodriquez; and numerous extended family members.

She was preceded in death by her parents and a sister, Deborah Fortney.

There will be no visitation as cremation has taken place. A celebration of life will be planned at a later date.&nbsp;

WALLACE — Raymond T. Bussen was born on February 26, 1929, in a sod house in Wallace County about one mile south of Fort Wallace Cemetery. He passed away peacefully on November 20, 2023 at Logan County Hospital in Oakley, Ks.&nbsp; He was the son of Barbara (Fueser) and Theodore J. Bussen.

At the age of three, his family moved to what would become known as the Bussen homestead.&nbsp; It was there that he would spend the rest of his life helping his parents, working the land, and eventually raising a family of his own.

He attended Gill Elementary School about three miles from the homestead and completed 1st&nbsp;through 8th&nbsp;grade, but never pursued high school. Like many families during that time, the harshness of life made poverty the theme and all family members needed to work to sustain life’s basic needs.

In 1952, he was drafted into the United States Army in which he proudly served his country.&nbsp; He was stationed in Long Island, New York and in 1954, he returned to Wallace County.

On August 31, 1954, Raymond T. Bussen married Shirley Rose Leiker and together, for the next 67 years of their married life, they would farm the land, raise a family, and share their gifts, talents and treasures with family, friends, neighbors, and community.

There were three things he treasured most-- his Catholic faith, his family, and his work. Though he was not a man of a great deal of words,&nbsp; one could see who he was and the gifts and talents he possessed.&nbsp; Born with an uncanny mathematical/engineering mindset, he could look at a structure whether it was a building or a corral, or some other object, purchase or find the needed materials “out back” and build it himself.&nbsp; This was and is very evident when one walks around his farm and sees the machine shed, circle corral, additions to the house, a water tank truck--which he converted into a sprayer with a 60’ boom, along with hoses, hydraulics, levers-- and a shop where he would do his own mechanical work on his tractors, combines, cars…etc. Furthermore, he was the epitome of stewardship in how he cared for the farmland, the crops, and the livestock.

More importantly, he knew his success as a farmer, was not of his own doings, but rather of his creator --God and His son, our Savior and Lord, Jesus Christ.&nbsp; Raymond was aware that he was God’s instrument and servant blessed with gifts, talents, and abilities all used to glorify and thank the Almighty from on High as well as to serve others as he lived out his earthly life. &nbsp;&nbsp;

Raymond’s children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren were his greatest joys and blessings.&nbsp; He built a swimming pool, small tractors, go-carts, all for them to enjoy as well as his numerous nieces, nephews and others who came to visit. &nbsp;He loved to see them having fun on the Bussen farm.

Centered to his life, farming, and family was his unwavering faith.&nbsp; He was an active member of St. Peter’s Catholic Church in Wallace and later of Holy Ghost Catholic Church in Sharon Springs.&nbsp; He served devoutly as a member of his parish as well as the Knights of Columbus of Wallace and Sharon Springs.

Immediate family preceding him in death are his wife, Shirley, and his oldest son, Tom.&nbsp; Raymond was the last member of his nine brothers and sisters.

Raymond and Shirley Bussen are the parents of Tom Bussen (wife Deanna), Brian Bussen, Rhonda Winkler (husband Greg), Julie Bussen, Joe Bussen (wife Suzanne), and Celeste Rains (husband Mike). They are the grandparents of 20 grandchildren, 33 great-children and have over 120 nieces/ nephews, grand-nieces/nephews, and great-grand nieces/nephews. &nbsp;

One of Raymond’s final sentences as he was transitioning from this life to the next were Jesus remember me; Jesus have mercy on me when I stand before You to give an account of my life… Holy Mother of God lead me to your Son, My Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

 </figure><h2>Raymond T. Bussen</h2>February 26, 1929 - November 20, 2023WALLACE — Raymond T. Bussen was born on February 26, 1929, in a sod house in Wallace County about one mile south of Fort Wallace Cemetery. He passed away peacefully on November 20, 2023 at Logan County Hospital in Oakley, Ks.&nbsp; He was the son of Barbara (Fueser) and Theodore J. Bussen.At the age of three, his family moved to what would become known as the Bussen homestead.&nbsp; It was there that he would spend the rest of his life helping his parents, working the land, and eventually raising a family of his own.He attended Gill Elementary School about three miles from the homestead and completed 1st&nbsp;through 8th&nbsp;grade, but never pursued high school. Like many families during that time, the harshness of life made poverty the theme and all family members needed to work to sustain life’s basic needs.In 1952, he was drafted into the United States Army in which he proudly served his country.&nbsp; He was stationed in Long Island, New York and in 1954, he returned to Wallace County.On August 31, 1954, Raymond T. Bussen married Shirley Rose Leiker and together, for the next 67 years of their married life, they would farm the land, raise a family, and share their gifts, talents and treasures with family, friends, neighbors, and community.There were three things he treasured most-- his Catholic faith, his family, and his work. Though he was not a man of a great deal of words,&nbsp; one could see who he was and the gifts and talents he possessed.&nbsp; Born with an uncanny mathematical/engineering mindset, he could look at a structure whether it was a building or a corral, or some other object, purchase or find the needed materials “out back” and build it himself.&nbsp; This was and is very evident when one walks around his farm and sees the machine shed, circle corral, additions to the house, a water tank truck--which he converted into a sprayer with a 60’ boom, along with hoses, hydraulics, levers-- and a shop where he would do his own mechanical work on his tractors, combines, cars…etc. Furthermore, he was the epitome of stewardship in how he cared for the farmland, the crops, and the livestock.More importantly, he knew his success as a farmer, was not of his own doings, but rather of his creator --God and His son, our Savior and Lord, Jesus Christ.&nbsp; Raymond was aware that he was God’s instrument and servant blessed with gifts, talents, and abilities all used to glorify and thank the Almighty from on High as well as to serve others as he lived out his earthly life. &nbsp;&nbsp;Raymond’s children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren were his greatest joys and blessings.&nbsp; He built a swimming pool, small tractors, go-carts, all for them to enjoy as well as his numerous nieces, nephews and others who came to visit. &nbsp;He loved to see them having fun on the Bussen farm.Centered to his life, farming, and family was his unwavering faith.&nbsp; He was an active member of St. Peter’s Catholic Church in Wallace and later of Holy Ghost Catholic Church in Sharon Springs.&nbsp; He served devoutly as a member of his parish as well as the Knights of Columbus of Wallace and Sharon Springs.Immediate family preceding him in death are his wife, Shirley, and his oldest son, Tom.&nbsp; Raymond was the last member of his nine brothers and sisters.Raymond and Shirley Bussen are the parents of Tom Bussen (wife Deanna), Brian Bussen, Rhonda Winkler (husband Greg), Julie Bussen, Joe Bussen (wife Suzanne), and Celeste Rains (husband Mike). Mitchel A. 'Mitch' Sommers, Victoria&nbsp;

Mitchel A. “Mitch” Sommers, age 64 of Victoria, Kansas,&nbsp;passed away on Sunday, November 19, 2023, at the Catholic Care Center in Bel Aire, Kansas.

He was born February 5, 1959, in Topeka, Kansas to Donald A. and Irene (Peck) Sommers.

Mitch grew up in Delia and Victoria. He graduated from Victoria High School and Fort Hays State University. 

He taught school for a few years in Liberal then moved back to Ellis County. He was a guide at Sternberg Museum in Hays, taught classes, painted murals and back drops for exhibits, and volunteered a lot of time at the museum. He held stained glass classes and was a volunteer for the Hays Arts Council. He enjoyed his flower gardening, the arts, cooking, animals and his dogs.

He is survived by his brother, Michael Sommers, Ellis, KS; his sister, Donna Funk, Otis, KS; his stepsister, Cheryl Frederick and husband, Tom, Topeka, KS; his former sister-in-law, Sharon Sommers, Victoria, KS; his nieces and nephews, Richard Frederick (Mia); Robert Frederick; Brian Frederick; Donald Sommers (Sandra); Jamie Buehler; Phillip Funk (Jessica); Shane Sommers; Dawn Wasinger (Danny); his 14 great-nieces and great-nephews; one great-great-nephew; and a large extended group of friends.

Mitch was preceded in death by his parents, Donald and Irene Sommers; his stepmother, Henrietta Sommers; his brother, Donald Sommers; and his brother-in-law, James Funk.

A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Monday, November 27, 2023, at Cline’s-Keithley Mortuary, 412 Main, Victoria, Kansas 67671 with Stan Ewy S.A.M. officiating.

David R. “Dave” Whitman, 82, Hays, passed away peacefully, Friday, November 17, 2023, at Ellis Good Samaritan Society after a short stay in hospice.

He was born July 9, 1941, in LaRue, Ohio, the son of Carl and Lenora (McWade) Whitman. 

He graduated from LaRue High School in 1959 then attended The Ohio State University. 

In 1963, Dave enlisted in the U.S. Navy and was stationed in Morocco and Guam, then from 1966-1969, he was in the U.S. Navy Reserves. 

For 17 years, he was a realtor in Denver then became a real estate appraiser until his retirement. 

On September 2, 1967, he married Jeanne Lindow in Reese, Michigan, they later divorced. On August 16, 2003, he married Kathy Gearhart in Grand Lake, Colorado. Dave and Kathy lived in Colorado until moving to Hays in March of 2023. 

He was a member of the Glenwood Springs, Colorado Elks BPOE #2086, and the Hays VFW Post #9076. 

He enjoyed snowmobiling, rafting, crossword puzzles, Budweiser beer, and trips with friends and family. Dave never knew a stranger, had a unique sense of humor and wit, and liked to have fun.

Survivors include his wife Kathy of the home in Hays, two sons, Mark Whitman and wife Joyce of Parker, CO and Michael Whitman and wife Eurie of Aurora, CO, five grandchildren, Karl, Liam, Romaro, Sophie, and Liliana Whitman, two stepdaughters, Alisha Parkhurst and husband Kent of Blackhawk, CO and Christine Stewart of Aurora, CO, two brothers, Robert Whitman and wife Carol of Marysville, OH and Charles Whitman of Hesperia, MI, and two half-brothers, Steve and John Whitman of Columbus, OH.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, Kenneth “Pete” Whitman, a sister, Mary Jane Burton, a brother-in-law, Howard Burton, and two sisters-in-law, Marilee and Ruth Whitman.

Graveside services with military honors by the Hays VFW Post #9076 Honor Guard will be at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, December 15, 2023, at Fort Hays Memorial Gardens, with Pastor Brenda Rodger officiating.

Ruth Mae (Waudby) Moyer was born October 14 1924; she had just turned 99, when she passed away at Wheatland Nursing Center on November 12. 

Ruth graduated from Russell High School in 1943, and from business school at Brown Mackie Business School in Salina. 

She was married to Ernie Reissig, and they have a daughter, Mervis Reissig, who lives in Redondo Beach, CA. Later, she married Bill Moyer, and they have a son, Bill Moyer Jr., who lives in Lorraine, KS with his wife Donna. 

Ruth is also survived by six grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren, and 12 great-great-grandchildren. 

She worked at various businesses in Russell, including the Russell Lumberyard, Jim’s Hamburger Stand, and the Russell Daily News.

 She was also a long-time volunteer for the Foster Grandparent program through Fort Hays State; and for the Methodist Thrift Shop in Russell. She was well known for her feistiness, helping others, and her honesty.

Norma Jean Buller, age 92, passed away on Sunday, November 19, 2023, at the Scott County Hospital in Scott City, Kansas. She was born on February 7, 1931, in Verden, Oklahoma, the daughter of Leslie and Irene Nightengale Unruh.

 In 1976 she moved to Malin, Oregon, and lived there until 2000 when they moved to Fountain, Colorado.&nbsp; In 2013 she moved to Scott City, Kansas. 

She was a loving homemaker, bookkeeper, and seamstress.&nbsp;

On September 17, 1950, she married John L. Buller in Montezuma, Kansas. He passed away on December 3, 2021, in Scott City, Kansas.

Survivors include two sons - Sheldon &amp; Kim Buller of Scott City, Kansas, Jay and Cheryl Buller of Malin, Oregon, daughter - Leslie and Stan Koehn of Scott City, Kansas, 12 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren, and eight great-great-grandchildren.&nbsp;

She is preceded in death by her parents, husband, brother, and stepbrother.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, November 25, 2023, at Price &amp; Sons Funeral Home in Scott City, Kansas, with Pastor Don Williams presiding.&nbsp;

Norma Jean Buller

Myrna May (Covert) Porsch was born January 8, 1932, in Wenatchee, WA, to Harry Langford and Mable Violet (Warren) Covert. Her family lived there until she was four, when they moved to Wilbur, WA. When she was in third grade, the family moved to Harrington, WA. 

She graduated from Harrington High School in 1951 and put herself through Kelsey Baird Business School in Spokane, WA.

After graduation, Myrna worked as an administrator for Southwestern Bell Telephone in Spokane, WA, where she met her future husband Norbert Anthony Porsch, a U.S.A. Marine sergeant who was serving as an instructor at Fairchild Airforce Base. 

They were married on Oct. 15, 1955, in Harrington, WA. Their honeymoon was the adventure of their drive to Kansas in their old pickup. They settled into their home on a small farm they purchased south of Selden, KS, Norb's hometown, where they raised their four children, Kathy, Ruth, Joan, and Michael.

Myrna worked as a nurse’s aide at Sheridan Country Hospital starting in September 1963 for 34 years, and as a housekeeper for a final year before her retirement in October 1998. She moved to Colby, KS in 1995, where she lived until August 2021 when she moved to Hoxie where she remained until her death on Nov. 19, 2023.

An active volunteer in Thomas County's Retired Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) for many years, she also regularly participated in activities at the Senior Progress Center, leading exercises, playing cards, and working on puzzles, as well as helping serve the lunches. She enjoyed her gardens, hosting card parties with friends, and family gatherings at her Colby home. After her mobility became limited, she continued to keep up with family and friends via social media and frequent telephone calls. She avidly followed her grandchildren’s sports, and her “greats” were her special treasures.

She was preceded in death by her husband Norb, brother Jim Covert, sisters Patty Covert and Harriet (Covert) Hayden, brother-in-law Doc Porsch, brother- and sister-in-law Francis and Leone Porsch, and brothers-in-law Alfred (Dink) Dinkel and Stanley Shaw.

 </figure>Myrna May (Covert) Porsch was born January 8, 1932, in Wenatchee, WA, to Harry Langford and Mable Violet (Warren) Covert. Her family lived there until she was four, when they moved to Wilbur, WA. When she was in third grade, the family moved to Harrington, WA. She graduated from Harrington High School in 1951 and put herself through Kelsey Baird Business School in Spokane, WA.After graduation, Myrna worked as an administrator for Southwestern Bell Telephone in Spokane, WA, where she met her future husband Norbert Anthony Porsch, a U.S.A. Marine sergeant who was serving as an instructor at Fairchild Airforce Base. They were married on Oct. 15, 1955, in Harrington, WA. Their honeymoon was the adventure of their drive to Kansas in their old pickup. They settled into their home on a small farm they purchased south of Selden, KS, Norb's hometown, where they raised their four children, Kathy, Ruth, Joan, and Michael.Myrna worked as a nurse’s aide at Sheridan Country Hospital starting in September 1963 for 34 years, and as a housekeeper for a final year before her retirement in October 1998. She moved to Colby, KS in 1995, where she lived until August 2021 when she moved to Hoxie where she remained until her death on Nov. 19, 2023.An active volunteer in Thomas County's Retired Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) for many years, she also regularly participated in activities at the Senior Progress Center, leading exercises, playing cards, and working on puzzles, as well as helping serve the lunches. She enjoyed her gardens, hosting card parties with friends, and family gatherings at her Colby home. After her mobility became limited, she continued to keep up with family and friends via social media and frequent telephone calls.  </figure>June 25, 1941 - November 17, 2023, Burlington, CO and GoodlandKaren Sue (Williams) Weber, 82, a resident of Burlington, Colorado and Goodland, Kansas, passed away on November 17, 2023 in Lakewood, Colorado.&nbsp; Karen was born to Ralph Waldo and Catherine Elizabeth (Reding) Williams in Shawnee, Oklahoma on June 25, 1941 (the perfect birthday).&nbsp; Karen grew up in Shawnee with her older brother Robert (Bob) Eugene and graduated from Shawnee High school in 1959.&nbsp; She then attended East Central State College in Ada, Oklahoma where she obtained her bachelor's and master's degrees in 1963 and 1964.&nbsp; It was during this time that she met Ronald Leslie Weber, to whom she was married on June 28th, 1964.&nbsp; Karen and Ron raised two children, Susan Kayleen (Weber) Fields (Tom) and Dwight Scott Weber to be the successful adults they are.&nbsp; She was also an aunt to three nephews Steve, Doug, and Scott and four nieces Debra, Beth, Kati, and Dena.&nbsp; After Ron died in 1988, Karen continued raising Susan and Scott.&nbsp; She was honored to be a Granny to three grandsons, Ronald James, David William, and Peter Michael Fields.&nbsp; She was also an honorary Granny to Susan’s niece Alex and three nephews Calvin, Ethan, and Robby.&nbsp; She was always invited to Fields family gatherings and included in family portraits.&nbsp; She said that Tom’s mom, Jean, was like the sister she never had.Karen was raised in the Disciples of Christ Church in Shawnee, Oklahoma.&nbsp; While in Shawnee, she was a member of the youth group and a Chi Ro Camp Counselor.&nbsp; Ultimately, she transferred her membership to the First Christian Church in Burlington – which is also a Disciples of Christ congregation.&nbsp; She served on the board for over 20 years and was the treasurer for part of that time.&nbsp; She remained a member there until her death.As a young girl, Karen was active in Blue Birds, Camp Fire Girls, Horizon Club, and Camp leadership for these programs.&nbsp; She also enjoyed fishing, hunting, and camping with her family.During her time at East Central State College, Karen received many honors, including a School Spirit Award while she was the president of the Pep Club.&nbsp; This award usually went to a cheer leader.&nbsp; She was also a member of the Calendar Court and a campus religious leader.Karen was a lifelong member of the National Education association (NEA), beginning with its student branch during her sophomore year of high school.&nbsp; She was elected multiple times to represent the Colorado Education Association at the NEA conventions.&nbsp; She served on a Blue-Ribbon Committee at the state level and was a member of the Resolutions committee at both the state and national levels.Karen began her teaching career at an elementary school in Jefferson County, Colorado in the fall of 1963.&nbsp; After teaching there for one year, she moved to Walsh, Colorado where Ron was already teaching.&nbsp; She taught junior high and high school math there.&nbsp; In 1967, they moved to Burlington, where Karen continued teaching junior high and high school math.&nbsp; She moved to the middle school where she taught 5th&nbsp;and 6th&nbsp;grade math, 6th&nbsp;grade math/science, middle school Chapter 1 math and English, and 7th&nbsp;and 8th&nbsp;grade computer science.&nbsp; While teaching full-time at Burlington Middle School, she also taught literature, English, math, and sociology for Morgan Community College, Regis Community College, and Denver University remote campuses in Burlington.Karen was certified to teach almost anything in Colorado, including library science.&nbsp; She received a computer grant from Denver University which she used to help the students in Burlington.&nbsp; She brought robots to the classroom in their early days, starting with the LEGO/LOGO robots.&nbsp; Karen was also a member of the Colorado Council of Mathematics Teachers and the East Central UniServ.&nbsp; She retired from teaching in May of 1999 after a 36-year career.While living in Burlington, she was a member and local president of the Quo Vadis Club.&nbsp; She and Ron were also active members of the Wagon Wheelers Square Dancing Club.&nbsp; Karen was quite the entrepreneur with Ron.&nbsp; While in Burlington, they became pioneers in the self-storage business when they built “The Attic.”&nbsp; Several years later, they were approached and asked to build another Attic in Goodland.&nbsp; When asked where the name came from, she often replied that that was where everyone stored the stuff they wanted to keep, but didn’t need in their living space.&nbsp; Several years after that, they also built K&amp;R Wash, a four-bay Car Wash in Burlington.&nbsp; When asked how she got top billing on this name, she replied that RaK didn’t spell car.&nbsp; These businesses led to a membership in both the Burlington and Goodland Chambers of Commerce.Throughout her years in Burlington and Goodland, Karen was very active, behind the scenes, in politics.&nbsp; Karen and Ron hosted caucuses at their home.&nbsp; She was a precinct committee lady in both Kit Carson and Sherman counties.&nbsp; In the 1990s, Karen was part of the planning and development committee for the Outback Playground in Burlington.In 1982, Karen and Ron purchased Mid America Camp Inn in Goodland, Kansas and Karen continued teaching while working at the campground.&nbsp; For many years there was also an ice business associated with the campground.&nbsp; Karen continued to own and operate the campground until her death.&nbsp; As a leader in the tourism industry, Karen became the president of the Kansas Campground Owners Association Board.&nbsp; She also held national positions at various points in time.&nbsp; She was an active member in the Northwest Kansas Travel Council, playing a key role in the creation of the Land &amp; Sky Byway that runs through Goodland and Sherman County.&nbsp; This is the only byway in the state that focuses on agriculture.Karen also enjoyed traveling, as a child with her parents to many parts of the U.S.; with her husband to Europe three times; with her husband and children throughout the U.S.; by herself in her travel trailer to multiple corners of the U.S.; with Susan and her family on several Bahamian and Caribbean cruises, and countless trips to visit family.Karen enjoyed researching her genealogy, tracing several lines back to the Mayflower.&nbsp; She was able to compile these records in a database she designed and shared with her family.Karen was a nationally recognized GeoCacher.&nbsp; She logged over 3,100 finds and had 14 hides to her name.&nbsp; She introduced many to the sport and received over 600 “Favorite” points.&nbsp; As a result of her many finds and Favorites received, she was allowed to place a rare virtual cache.Karen was proceeded in death by her parents, husband, brother, and one nephew.Karen is survived by her daughter, Susan Fields (Tom) of Creve Coeur, Missouri; grandsons Ronny of Madison, Wisconsin and David and Peter of Creve Coeur, Missouri; and son Scott Weber of Kremmling, Colorado.Memorial contributions may be designated to The Kit Carson County Carousel in Burlington, Colorado;
