Marion Tien was born December 9, 1937 to John and Pauline (Van Kooten) Tien on the family farm near Prairie View, KS. &nbsp;He went to be with his Lord and Savior on March 26, 2024, at the age of 86. &nbsp;

Marion first attended Luctor country school through the eighth grade, and then attended Long Island High School, graduating in 1955. &nbsp;After briefly working on the construction of the Luctor/Long Island road, he joined the family farm and continued farming into his 80’s. &nbsp;While farming he raised cattle, hogs, sheep and horses, including his teams of draft horses that he used both in parades with his carefully restored wagon and preparing the Phillipsburg rodeo arena. &nbsp;He was an active leader for the Lone Prairie 4H Club helping with leathercraft and various livestock projects. &nbsp;He also was a Farm Bureau member and was proud to be recognized as having a Century Farm.

On November 12, 1965, Marion married his sweetheart, Joyce Mae Bayens at Luctor Christian Reformed Church. To this union were born 4 children; Larry, Sandra, Lisa, and Loren. &nbsp;He was a kind and dedicated father raising his children in a loving, Christ-centered home while instilling in them a strong work ethic and appreciation for the life of a farmer and rancher. &nbsp;Marion also loved his role as a grandfather to 7 grandchildren and 2 great-granddaughters. &nbsp;

The church played a very important role in Marion’s life, beginning with his baptism on January 9, 1938. &nbsp;Over the years Marion served in a variety of roles at the Luctor Christian Reformed Church as a deacon, elder, building committee member and cemetery board member.

He was preceded in death by his parents John and Pauline Tien, his sister Thelma Vaandrager, and his brother Henry Tien.

He is survived by his wife Joyce of Prairie View; his children; Larry (Nancy) of Prairie View, Sandra (Dan Zylstra) of Mishawaka, IN, Lisa (Scott Yantes) of Hutchison, KS, and Loren (Wendy) Benton, KS; grandchildren: Allison (Timon Nimtz), Amanda (Jon Buehler), Nathan (Liz) Zylstra, John Zylstra, Madilyn Yantes, Ivalea Tien, and Andrew Tien; and 2 great-granddaughters: Noa Nimtz and Elsie Zylstra.&nbsp;

A funeral service for Marion will be held at 2:00 p.m., Saturday, March 30, 2024, at the Luctor Christian Reformed Church, with Pastor Shawn Richardson officiating. Burial will follow at the Luctor Cemetery.

Marion will lie in-state on Thursday from 2 p.m. to 9 p.m., and Friday from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., with a visitation from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. on Friday afternoon at the Olliff-Boeve Memorial Chapel in Phillipsburg.

Memorial contributions may be made to Luctor Christian Reformed Church or Phillips County 4-H.

Timothy Scott Marcotte (Big Tim), of Palco, Kansas passed away on March 24, 2024, at the Rooks County Health Center in Plainville, Kansas, at the age of 67. He was born on February 25, 1957, to Orren Henry and Marjorie (Purkey) Marcotte in WaKeeney, KS. He was married on June 24, 1979, to Brenda K. Robison in Littleton, CO (one of the very few years harvest was later than usual).

Timothy grew up in rural Rooks County. He graduated from Palco High School in 1975. He loved running track, wrestling, and basketball. He held the long jump record for many years. He graduated with an associate degree from Union College in Lincoln Nebraska in auto-mechanics. After college Tim and Brenda returned to pursue his love of ranching and farming. Tim made time for other things that he loved too, cars, hunting, and fishing. One of the highlights of his years was “the hunters from Arkansas” coming out every year. He loved spending time with his family and friends, especially his daughter and son-in-law. Big Tim (as most knew him) never met a stranger. He was a loving husband, father, brother, and friend.

Timothy is survived by his wife, Brenda of Palco; daughter, Katelyn Marcotte-Crawford (Connor Crawford) of Aurora, Colorado; siblings, Rita Spears, of Dora Missouri, Terry (Annette) Marcotte of Belleville, Kansas, and Julie Mattson of Palco, Kansas.

A graveside service will be held on Wednesday, April 3, 2024, at 11:00 AM, at the Pleasantview Cemetery in Palco. Visitation will be held on Tuesday, April 2, from 5 PM until 7 PM at the funeral home in Plainville.

Terence Anthony “Terry” Foster, 70, of Russell, Kansas, passed away Thursday, March 21, 2024 at the Russell Regional Hospital in Russell.

Terry was born April 1, 1953, in San Diego, California. He was the son of Orville Wayne and Margaret Rita (Murphy) Foster. Terry grew up in Minneapolis, Kansas and graduated from Minneapolis High School in the Class of 1972. During his high school years, he was a member of FFA, the chess club, and played intramural tennis, basketball, and softball. He became an avid tennis player. He may not have looked athletic, but he had skills and quick feet which often surprised his opponents! After graduating from high school, Terry, like his father before him, worked at El Dorado, an RV manufacturing plant in Minneapolis. He decided he did not want to do this for the rest of his life, so he decided to go to Fort Hays University with some of his friends. In the spring of 1974, Terry did one semester at K-State before returning to Fort Hays and graduating in December, 1977 with a B.S. in Education. In the fall of 1975, Terry sat out a semester to go with his mother to visit her home in County Cork, Ireland, which was an education in itself!

While at Fort Hays, Terry met Maribeth Schwarzkopf. They were united in marriage on July 28, 1978, at St. John’s in Beloit, Kansas. They made their home in Glen Elder, Kansas, until 1979, when they moved to Russell. While at Russell, Terry graduated from Fort Hays in 1982 with a Master’s degree in Administration. After getting their Master’s degrees, this union was blessed with two children, Megan and James. They were the pinnacle of his life.

Terry was an Educator and Teacher for many children in Quinter, Cawker City, and Russell, Kansas for 38 years. While at Russell he taught 5th grade and 6th grade math. He also worked for a time at NEW, a call center for Direct TV in Hays, Kansas. Terry was well known for always giving out Jolly Ranchers to his students and friends. Not only did he love rocketry, motorcycles, computers, chess, tennis, and reading nonfiction, but also loved researching a topic and then going to visit the site of his study. He loved watching sports as much as playing them. Some of his favorite teams were K-State and Kansas City Chiefs and we would often go to see a live game.

Terry’s life was full of living, laughing, and loving. He was one of those unique individuals who did not take himself so seriously. He liked to have fun and could always see the humor in situations. One never knew what was going to come out of his mouth! He was always on the go. Life was an adventure. We would take trips on the spur of the moment; trips in blizzards, motorcycle trips with friends, Disney World with family, Segway tour in Kansas City, mystery trip to the Mall of America, and everyday excursions. Terry’s laid-back attitude and determination to go through life his way made us better together.

Terry’s surviving family include his wife of 45 years, Maribeth of the home; daughter, Megan Ashlaw of Wichita, Kansas; son, James Foster and wife Shauna of Russell, Kansas; four grandchildren, Natalie Ashlaw, Derek Ashlaw, Alaina Foster, and Greyson Foster; sister, Elizabeth Hedberg of Wichita, Kansas; nephew, Sean Kopf of Wichita, Kansas and many other nieces and nephews.

Terry was preceded in death by his parents; half-brothers, Bob Foster and Ronnie Foster; half-sister, Rosalee Kern; and the family dog, Charlie.

Celebration of Terry’s Life will be held at 10:30 AM, Monday, April 1, 2024, at Trinity United Methodist Church. Visitation will be held from Noon to 8:00 PM, Sunday, March 31, 2024 at Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary of Russell, with the family present to greet friends from 6:00 PM to 7:00 PM. Cremation has

Betty Jean (Wilson) McCord of Great Bend, Kan., peacefully went to be with her heavenly father on March 22, 2024, with family by her bedside. &nbsp;Betty was born on Nov. 18,1950, in St. John, Kan., daughter of Elvis and Virginia (Cubbage) Wilson Fox.

Betty graduated from Larned High School in 1968. She went on to receive her Bachelor's Degree in Business Administration from Emporia State University in 1972. On December 20, 1979, she married the love of her life, Vernon McCord, who preceded her in death in Feb. of 2012.

Betty truly enjoyed her work. She was an office manager for several businesses throughout her lifetime to include Eakin Construction, Larned, Kan.; C.V. Cale Co., and M&amp; F Plumbing both in Great Bend. She retired in 2011.

Betty was kind, loving, generous, patient, courageous and strong. &nbsp;She faced many issues &nbsp;with her health throughout her life, but she always kept a positive attitude and battled on ferverently. She and her husband enjoyed flipping houses and doing many projects around home or for others. They often would play cards with family and friends and travelled to many places. Betty enjoyed reading, mind puzzles, old Western movies, and HGTV. &nbsp;Her greatest joy was her family and never missed a chance to tell others all about them.

Betty is survived by her mother, Virginia Wilson-Fox of Hays, Ks, her children Andrea "Andie" Trevino (Jessie) of Great Bend, Ks, Jeff McCord (Ashlee) of Topeka, Ks.; Her siblings, Judy Gladow of Manhattan, Ks and Linda Reichert (Thomas) of Hays, Ks; Her Grandchildren Mackenzie McCord (Erik), Ezra McCord, Kalea McCord, Jayla McCord, Timothy McCord, &nbsp;Cooper Trevino (Alexis), Tucker Trevino (Mia), Letecia Tracy (Abraham), Jordan Trevino (Erika), Mikal Trevino (Shauzy), Mercedes Trevino, and Jessie Trevino, Jr. ; 15 Great grandchildren, with one on the way, 1 great-great grandchild; Many nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Betty Jean (Wilson) McCord

Barbara Jo “Barb” Ritter, 90, passed away March 21, 2024, at Spring Hill Care And Rehabilitation Center, Spring Hill, Kan. &nbsp;She was born April 13, 1933, in Tulsa, Okla. to Charles and Juanita (Baughman) Drake. Barb married Lugene C. “Gene” Ritter September 30, 1951, in Hoisington, Kan. &nbsp;He died March 17, 2002.

Barb, a Great Bend resident since 2001 coming from Hoisington, was a dedicated employee of The 10th Street Eyecare Center, Great Bend, for many years previously working as a bank teller in Olathe and Yates Center. &nbsp;She was a member of First Christian Church, Great Bend, where she was active in several women's groups, and enjoyed traveling with Gene following his retirement. Gene and Barb traveled the country visiting family and visiting sites related to her genealogical endeavors. She was considered the family genealogist, spending over thirty years accumulating research regarding the family histories. &nbsp;Above all, Barb enjoyed time spent with loved ones, and from a very early age, was known as the family caregiver. Family was everything to her.

Survivors include two sons, Ben Ritter and wife Charlene of Oregon City, Oreg., and Bob Ritter and wife Teresa of Spring Hill, Kan.; daughter-in-law Karen Ritter (Doug) of Wichita; brother-in-law Dr. Keith Ritter and wife Becky of Hoisington; sister-in-law Mary Drake of Great Bend; eight grandchildren, Aaron (Natalie), Tisha, Ashley (Ahren), Amber (Chris), Natalie, Kathryn, Scott and Emily; eight great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Gene (Lugene) Ritter; two sons, Doug (James) and Randy (Randall) Ritter; and three brothers, Chuck (Charles) Drake, Ed (Carl) Drake, and Jimmie Drake.

Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday, April 6, 2024, at First Christian Church in Great Bend, with Rev. William F. Frank Joseph Wapelhorst, 62, passed away March 24, 2024, at the University Of Kansas Health System - Great Bend Campus, Great Bend, Kan. &nbsp;He was born February 15, 1962, in Great Bend, to Daniel and Joyce (Sell Jensen) Wapelhorst.&nbsp; Frank had previously been married to Jayne Kay Keffer from 1985 to 2000.

Frank, a longtime employee of Superior Essex, was a current resident of Great Bend previously living in Brownwood, Texas. &nbsp;He was a member of the Roman Catholic faith, numerous archery clubs, and was passionate about hunting and fishing. &nbsp;He was a talented athlete, playing softball, golf and basketball, even after being confined to a wheelchair.&nbsp;

Surviving are his parents, Dan and Joyce Wapelhorst of Great Bend; three sisters, Kathy Wapelhorst (Doug Clark), Paula Stocker (James Love), and Nancy Sawyer all of Great Bend; adopted son JR Griffith (Emily) of Johnson City, Texas; two adopted grandchildren, Adam and Ann Griffith; many nieces and nephews, and great nieces and nephews; and feline companion, Cleo.

Reta Gaynell Brouillette passed away peacefully on March 25, 2024, surrounded by her loved ones. &nbsp;She was born on August 5, 1948 to George and Mildred Egbert in Dodge City KS. &nbsp;

Reta obtained her teaching degree from Fort Hays State University. &nbsp; She was a passionate golfer, spending many hours on the golf course. &nbsp;Often returning after that “come again” shot or hopeful for a second hole in one.

She is survived by her devoted husband Garey Brouillette. &nbsp;They recently celebrated their 55th&nbsp;wedding anniversary. &nbsp;Reta was a loving mother to her son, Shad Brouillette (Gerri) of Shawnee Kansas and daughter, Carey Brouillette Hipp (Scott) of Ellsworth Kansas. &nbsp;She will be greatly missed by her grandchildren Lizzy Hipp, Ben Hipp and Andrew Hipp who all brought her much pride and joy. &nbsp;She could be found supporting them at many activities across the state of Kansas.

Edwin (Mister Ed) Lee Darnell, 80, of Lakin, Kansas passed away Saturday March 23, 2024, at his home in Lakin, Kansas.

Ed was born April 19, 1943, to Walter Earl Sr. and Lyda Mae (McClaskey) Darnell in La Animas, Colorado. Ed grew up and attended school in Las Animas.

Ed was 2 days shy of his 21st birthday when he married the love of his life Thelma Louise Miller on April 21, 1963, in Las Animas, Colorado. He had his older brother sign for him to marry. They made their home in Holly, Colorado and eventually made their home in Kansas.

Ed had various jobs during his younger years. He would pick cantaloupe by hand which he hated the smell of. He would say he stepped on too many rotten ones stepping off the truck. He went on harvest crews, rode pens in various feed yards and ended working at the Kearny County Road Department for 25 years, retiring in July of 2009.

He enjoyed roping in his younger years and still enjoyed going to rodeos watching his family participate. He loved watching his grandchildren in their activities and family gatherings. Ed and Thelma loved dancing and taking trips to Cripple Creek and Las Vegas. Thelma loved to gamble, while Ed would watch the people. He enjoyed going to the convenient stores to have coffee.

Ed is survived by his three children: Janet (Bill) Rooney Lakin, Kansas; Sandra (Ty) Honstead Healy, Kansas; and Dwayne “Buddy” (Stacey) Darnell, Gordon, Nebraska. 3 brothers: Jim (Donna) Darnell Syracuse, Kansas, Robert (Ruth) Darnell Las Animas, Colorado and Fred Darnell, Las Animas, Colorado He has 7 Grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

Edwin (Mister Ed) Lee Darnell

Mary Ann Kosan (née Pappas), age 92, of Benbrook, Texas, passed away on August 21st, 2024. Born in Garden City, Kansas on July 4th, 1931, she loved sharing her birthday with the United States and invariably wore red, white, and blue each July. She was a beloved wife, mother, and friend to many.

Mary Ann marched to the beat of her own drum. Feisty and lovable, she lived life on her terms. She was proud of her Greek heritage but preferred the Anglican church to Greek Orthodox. She held an abiding faith in God and adored guardian angels, several representations of which she posted throughout the house. Mary Ann was a collector of dolls, antiques, and folk art from around the world. She valued nutrition and loved all things natural, especially plants and animals.

In her youth, Mary Ann spent time in Philadelphia, Portland, and Denver. In 1963, she toured Greece, Jerusalem, and the pyramids of Egypt. She loved music and dancing. For a time she was a Ballroom Dance Instructor for Arthur Murray Studios. In 1966, she was living in Denver, Colorado, selling cosmetics and working for a travel agency when she met her future husband Fikret at a dance. Mary Ann and Fikret hit it off immediately and were married on March 30th, 1967 in a civil ceremony. Her funeral service commemorates their 57th wedding anniversary. She will be buried in a wedding gown, something she never had the opportunity to wear in life!

Mary Ann and her husband moved to Turkey in 1967. During this time, they visited the villages of her Greek ancestors and the Seven Churches of Asia Minor. In 1971 they moved to Omaha, Nebraska to be closer to her aging parents. They also lived for several years in Las Cruces, New Mexico before settling in Benbrook, Texas.

In 1968, while in Frankfurt, Germany on a business trip, Mary Ann experienced the traumatic early birth of a stillborn child in a hospital where nobody spoke English. Five miscarriages and nine years later, she gave birth to her only child Gem Ari at the age of 46.

She is survived by her husband Fikret, her son Gem, and her daughter-in-law Sarah. Mary Ann was preceded in death by her half-brother, Chris Manasis, her father Sam G. Pappas, her mother Chrysanthe (Macreathu) Pappas, her sister Eve Bates, her brother George Pappas, and her sister Maggie Dodd.

A service in honor of Mary Ann Kosan will be held at St. Thomas Episcopal Church in Garden City, Kansas, at 11 a.m. on Saturday, March 30th. Burial will follow at Valley View Cemetery in Garden City. Ruben Bruntz, 98, passed away on Sunday, June 18, 2023 at his home in Watauga, Texas. He was born on May 25, 1925 in Bazine, Kansas to Jacob and Eva Bruntz.

While serving in Germany during WWII, he received two Purple Hearts for being injured during combat.&nbsp;

He married Betty Rae Patterson on July 18, 1948. Together they ran Bruntz Plumbing and Appliance for 31 years before retiring to enjoy children and grandchildren.

Ruben was preceded in death by his wife, Betty Rae; mother, Eva; father, Jacob; daughter, Sharilyn Wilson; sons-in-laws Charles Wilson and Denis Satrom; sisters, Rose Gumescheimer, Viola Daubert, and Dorothy Schoenhals; and brothers, Edward, John, and Samuel Bruntz.

Ruben is survived by his four children, Mike and his wife, Joan, Bruntz of Bazine, Curtis Bruntz of Bazine, Lynn Bruntz of Fenton, MO, Janice Satrom of South Lake, TX; 13 grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren, 3 great-great-grandchildren; and sister-in-law, Eileen Bruntz of Bazine.

Ruben Bruntz

Marty Shapiro, 84, died peacefully in his Santa Barbara home on Feb. 22, 2024. Marty lived a full and gratifying life and was loved by so many friends, family, students and colleagues for his kindness, generosity and humor. Like the Monty Python song says, Marty always looked on the bright side of life.

Martin Shapiro was born in 1939 to Dorothy and Ben Shapiro of The Bronx, New York – the third of six children who have remained close all of their lives. Marty’s love of music began early, at the side of his mother, a pianist and singer who performed on Jewish radio.&nbsp;Marty attended The Bronx High School of Science, and majored in engineering at CCNY, until he made the life-changing decision to switch to music.

By the time he graduated, he had become a skilled guitarist and was eager to continue his music studies. Attracted by the Bay Area student activism of the early 60s, he set his sights on UC Berkeley. &nbsp;Cal’s music department needed a lute player, and he stepped up to meet that need. &nbsp;Marty and his lute caught the attention of young music major Marian Auerbach. The two bonded as idealists, supporting the Free Speech Movement, Anti-War, and Civil Rights movements.

When they finished their degrees, they set out for Vienna’s Music Academy in Austria and spent a year studying, practicing German, and hitch-hiking throughout Europe. While visiting aunts and uncles and cousins in Israel, they got married, before returning to California to start a family.

In the late 60s, UCSB began offering a PhD in Musicology. Marty brought Marian and baby Joel to Santa Barbara, and they fell in love with the beautiful weather and ocean and mountain scenery.

College teaching was a perfect channel for his extensive knowledge, creativity and wit. Who else would, on the first day of “Intro to Music Listening,” herald his own arrival by playing Richard Strauss’&nbsp;Also Sprach Zarathustra&nbsp;(aka the theme of&nbsp;2001: a Space Odyssey)?

Home on the Range (or Toto, I don’t think we’re in the Bronx anymore)&nbsp;At the age of 30, Dr. Shapiro moved his young family (now with baby Lanya) to Hays, Kansas, and began his career as a Professor of Music. He taught many music history and music appreciation courses, including two courses he developed called The History of Rock Music and Jazz Folk Rock.&nbsp; He also led the symphony’s viola section and taught classical guitar and folk guitar.&nbsp; Students loved his enthusiasm, sense of humor, and kindness. &nbsp;

Being a dad was important to Marty. Every year, he led exotic family adventures to places such as Estes Park, the Ozarks, Lion Country Safari, Canada, Mexico, and eventually Europe. He drove long road trips to New York to see his parents, siblings and cousins. &nbsp;Wherever they went, Marty sought out museums, exposing his kids to culture. Maybe the only thing that made him happier than a good museum was a good concert… or a classic movie! His interest in films led to his producing the long-running Classic Film Series at FHSU and led to a gig introducing films on KOOD public television.&nbsp;&nbsp;He also loved &nbsp;serving on the board of High Plains Public Radio.

After a 31-year teaching career, Marty realized a long-time dream of retiring to Santa Barbara. He loved playing viola in the SBCC orchestra and writing concert program notes. Later in retirement, although nerve compression robbed him of his hand dexterity and the ability to play guitar and viola, Marty remained remarkably upbeat – finding pleasure in concerts, operas, ushering at &nbsp;and watching classic films. He enjoyed senior exercise classes, daily walks in the neighborhood with Marian, and most of all, being a grandpa.

At the age of 83, Marty suffered a major frontal lobe stroke followed by a traumatic brain injury, ultimately leading to advanced dementia. His love of connecting with people persisted to the end – warmly greeting visitors and caregivers alike with a kind word and warm touch.

He is missed by his wife Marian, children Joel and Lanya Shapiro (Vito Di Bona), and grandsons Joshua and Ari&nbsp;

Marty lived a full and gratifying life and was loved by so many friends, family, students and colleagues for his kindness, generosity and humor. Like the Monty Python song says, Marty always looked on the bright side of life.Martin Shapiro was born in 1939 to Dorothy and Ben Shapiro of The Bronx, New York – the third of six children who have remained close all of their lives. Marty’s love of music began early, at the side of his mother, a pianist and singer who performed on Jewish radio.&nbsp;Marty attended The Bronx High School of Science, and majored in engineering at CCNY, until he made the life-changing decision to switch to music.By the time he graduated, he had become a skilled guitarist and was eager to continue his music studies. Attracted by the Bay Area student activism of the early 60s, he set his sights on UC Berkeley. &nbsp;Cal’s music department needed a lute player, and he stepped up to meet that need. &nbsp;Marty and his lute caught the attention of young music major Marian Auerbach. The two bonded as idealists, supporting the Free Speech Movement, Anti-War, and Civil Rights movements.When they finished their degrees, they set out for Vienna’s Music Academy in Austria and spent a year studying, practicing German, and hitch-hiking throughout Europe. While visiting aunts and uncles and cousins in Israel, they got married, before returning to California to start a family.In the late 60s, UCSB began offering a PhD in Musicology. Marty brought Marian and baby Joel to Santa Barbara, and they fell in love with the beautiful weather and ocean and mountain scenery.College teaching was a perfect channel for his extensive knowledge, creativity and wit. Who else would, on the first day of “Intro to Music Listening,” herald his own arrival by playing Richard Strauss’&nbsp;Also Sprach Zarathustra&nbsp;(aka the theme of&nbsp;2001: a Space Odyssey)?Home on the Range (or Toto, I don’t think we’re in the Bronx anymore)&nbsp;At the age of 30, Dr. Shapiro moved his young family (now with baby Lanya) to Hays, Kansas, and began his career as a Professor of Music. He taught many music history and music appreciation courses, including two courses he developed called The History of Rock Music and Jazz Folk Rock.&nbsp; He also led the symphony’s viola section and taught classical guitar and folk guitar.&nbsp; Students loved his enthusiasm, sense of humor, and kindness. &nbsp;Being a dad was important to Marty. Every year, he led exotic family adventures to places such as Estes Park, the Ozarks, Lion Country Safari, Canada, Mexico, and eventually Europe. He drove long road trips to New York to see his parents, siblings and cousins. &nbsp;Wherever they went, Marty sought out museums, exposing his kids to culture. Charlotte Joan (Nemechek) Albers, 91, of Grinnell, KS, passed away March 25th, 2024 in Salina, KS. She was born on April 13, 1932 in Trego County, KS, the third of Johanna (Gaschler) and Louis Nemechek’s eight children.

Charlotte graduated from Trego Community High School in 1950. She attended nursing school at St. Anthony’s hospital in Hays, graduating in 1954.&nbsp;

On April 14, 1956, she married Clem J. Albers at Christ the King Catholic Church in WaKeeney, KS. They lived in St. Louis, MO for a short time where Charlotte worked as a nurse, before moving to Clem’s family farm near Angelus, KS. There they had four sons: Tom, Curt, Eric John, and Jeff. Charlotte continued work as a nurse at the Logan County Hospital and was the school nurse for Oakley, Monument, Russell Springs, and Winona for 27 years.

Charlotte loved western Kansas and living in the home that Clem and she built together. They were lifelong parishioners of St. Paul’s Catholic Church in Angelus, KS. She enjoyed quilting, embroidery, exploring family history, and baking. As a grandmother, she was never too strict and was quick to laugh. She loved spending time with her granddaughters and great-grandchildren.&nbsp;

Charlotte is survived by three sons, Tom of Grinnell, KS, Curt (Rochelle) of Smolan, KS, and Jeff (Christina) of Salina, KS; four granddaughters, Carleigh (Kacper) Orlowski of Hays, KS, Whitney (Eric) Crook of Lawrence, KS, Carrie Albers of Ann Arbor, MI, and Taylor (Kellan) Ziegelmeier of Gem, KS; four great-grandchildren: Isaac and Caeli Orlowski, Emery Crook, and Fritz Ziegelmeier; and sisters, Betty Lipp of Collyer, KS and Mary Jo (Gary) McClanahan of WaKeeney, KS. She is also survived by several nieces and nephews.&nbsp;

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Clem; infant son Eric John; brothers, George Nemechek, Bill Nemechek, Doug Nemechek, and Richard Nemechek; and sister Darlene Tomanek.

A vigil will take place at 7:00pm, Tuesday, April 2, 2024, at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Oakley, KS. Aurelia Marie (Marintzer) Escher, 102, of Topeka, KS, died Monday, March 25, 2024. She was born on November 14, 1921, in Herndon, KS, to Joseph and Mary Katherine (Huss) Marintzer, and was the youngest of eight children.

Aurelia attended St. Mary’s Catholic School and was in the last high school class to graduate from there in 1939. Upon graduating high school, she went to nursing school at St. Anthony’s in Denver, CO, and received her Registered Nurse Degree in 1943. In 1944, Aurelia joined the Army and underwent training in Arkansas, Colorado and eventually New Jersey in preparation for deployment overseas. She was stationed in an Army hospital near London for a year and a half taking care of both American and German soldiers. After the end of the war, she spent an additional six months in Paris. Her rank was that of First Lieutenant.

Aurelia returned to the States in 1946, and married Francis William Escher on August 12, 1947, in Herndon, KS. They had five children and lived almost their entire married lives in their hometown until eventually moving to Topeka to be near their children.

Aurelia was preceded in death by her husband, parents and siblings. She is survived by her children, Gary and wife Linda, of Topeka, KS, Mary Jo and husband Bruce Erickson, of Rio Hondo, TX, Daniel and wife Betty, of Topeka, KS, Ann and husband Tom Palmer, of Sabetha, KS and Mitchell and wife Susan of Lee’s Summit, MO; 16 grandchildren and 20 great grandchildren.

Aurelia was an outgoing woman who enjoyed long conversations and visits with family and friends. She demonstrated kindness, a positive outlook on life, a great sense of humor and many other cherished qualities. She loved her family unconditionally and devoted as much time as possible to them throughout the years. In addition to her family, one of her greatest joys was making beautiful fresh flower arrangements to place before the altar of the Blessed Mother in St Mary Assumption Church, in Herndon.

A Rosary will take place at 9:00 a.m. and Memorial Mass at 10:00 a.m. Thursday, April 4, 2024, at St. Mary Catholic Church, Herndon, KS, with burial in the church cemetery. Aurelia Marie (Marintzer) Escher

Ferninand “Fred” Weigel, Jr., 94, of Russell, Kansas, passed away Sunday, March 24, 2024 at the Russell Regional Hospital with his family by his side.

Fred was born February 11, 1930 in Emmeram, Kansas. He was one of four children born to Ferninand, Sr. and Lidwina (Sander) Weigel. He grew up in Emmeram and graduated from Victoria High School. He then attended Ft. Hays State University. He taught in a country school for a few years.

Fred served his country in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He was stationed overseas in Japan. He returned to Kansas after his tour of duty.

Fred was united in marriage to Imelda Leiker on June 19, 1951. This union was blessed with a son, Leon.

They moved to Russell in 1954. They later divorced in 1969. Later he was united in marriage to Joan L. (Kaufman) Garrett on August 12, 1999. They made their home in Russell.

Fred was a Banker most all of his life. He worked for Home State Bank, First National Bank and later known as Sunflower Bank for over 40 years. In `1972, Fred started oil investing with Jim Schoenberger. He was an active member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus 4th Degree and K of C financial secretary for over 20 years. He was Past Commander and Life Member of the Russell V.F.W. Post #6240, as well as District and State of Kansas Past Commander. He enjoyed watching sports, especially local teams and the University of Kansas. Fred had a smile that would light up a room that was only matched by the kindness in his heart.

Fred’s surviving family include his wife of 24 years, Joan of the home; son, Leon “Lee” Weigel of Russell, Kansas; sister, Vera Degenhardt (James A.) of Kirksville, Missouri; nine grandchildren, Renee, Jeanie, Erica, Phillip, Melissa, Angela, Kristin, Justin and Jordan; 20 great grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren.

Fred was preceded in death by his parents; and two sisters, Thelma Dreiling and Hubertine Herbel.

Celebration of the Funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 AM, Tuesday, April 2, 2024, at St. Mary, Queen of Angels Catholic Church. Visitation will be held from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM, Monday, April 1, 2024 at Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary. Vigil will be held at 7:00 PM, Monday at St. Mary, Queen of Angels Catholic Church. Elaine’s legacy includes a bouquet of family members who flourished in her care: Michele Dawson, Anita Brougher, Patricia and her husband Patrick Keyes, and her cherished granddaughter Kathryn Fentress, who Elaine often joked was the ‘blossom’ of her eye. Grandson Mason Brougher and great-granddaughters Alexandria and Marceline Yeagley also added to her garden of joy. Her sister Mona Ferol and brother-in-law Frank Powers, along with her brother Marvin Dawon, will continue to share stories of Elaine’s adventures in laughter.

Elaine has taken her final bow, ahead of her were her parents, her trio of sons, Troy Jason Wayne, Blaine Michael, and Aaron Kit – as well as her brothers, Dennis and Gilbert “Blackie” Dawson.

As a master of many arts, Elaine could often be found with her hands in the soil, her heart in the kitchen, and her imagination in the world of crafts. An alumnus of Oakley High School she could turn a phrase, a garden plot, or a recipe into a work art with the same ease.

A celebration of life will be held April 8, 2024, from 1-3 pm at Baalmann Mortuary, Oakley.  </figure>Frank Joseph Wapelhorst, 62, passed away March 24, 2024, at the University Of Kansas Health System - Great Bend Campus, Great Bend, Kan. &nbsp;He was born February 15, 1962, in Great Bend, to Daniel and Joyce (Sell Jensen) Wapelhorst.&nbsp; Frank had previously been married to Jayne Kay Keffer from 1985 to 2000.Frank, a longtime employee of Superior Essex, was a current resident of Great Bend previously living in Brownwood, Texas. &nbsp;He was a member of the Roman Catholic faith, numerous archery clubs, and was passionate about hunting and fishing. &nbsp;He was a talented athlete, playing softball, golf and basketball, even after being confined to a wheelchair.&nbsp;Surviving are his parents, Dan and Joyce Wapelhorst of Great Bend; three sisters, Kathy Wapelhorst (Doug Clark), Paula Stocker (James Love), and Nancy Sawyer all of Great Bend; adopted son JR Griffith (Emily) of Johnson City, Texas; two adopted grandchildren, Adam and Ann Griffith; many nieces and nephews, and great nieces and nephews; and feline companion, Cleo.Memorial funeral services will be 11:00 a.m. Friday, April 5, 2024, at Bryant Funeral Home, with Father Terrance Klein presiding. &nbsp;A Rosary will be held 7:00 p.m. Thursday, April 4, 2024, at Bryant Funeral Home. &nbsp;Memorials may be given to the Frank Wapelhorst Expense Fund, in care of Bryant Funeral Home, 1425 Patton Rd., Great Bend, KS &nbsp;67530.

Jon C. Long, age 69, died tragically Monday, March 18, 2024, in a truck accident in Tularosa, New Mexico. He was born August 9, 1954, in Sevastopol, Wisconsin, the son of Donald G. Sr. and Ruby Ann (Jarman) Long.

Jon grew up in Sturgeon Bay, Wisconsin, and graduated in 1972 from West De Pere High School. He received his bachelor’s degree from the University of Wisconsin Green Bay. Jon served in the United States Navy for five years and then transferred to the Naval Reserve for 12 years. He married Mary Menard on May 20, 1975, in Green Bay, Wisconsin, at Nativity Catholic Church. He worked for his uncles and friends on their farms where he perfected his handy man skills. Jon was currently driving semi for Martin Trucking / Southwest Express of Hugoton, Kansas. He loved the Lord, enjoyed writing Bible studies, and was an active member of the First Church of God in Elkhart, Kansas. He enjoyed playing his guitar, reading, fishing, being outdoors, and camping with his family. Jon previously volunteered on the Morton County EMS of Rolla, Kansas, and was a current volunteer for the Morton County Fire Department of Rolla, Kansas. Jon will be remembered for the love he had for his family and being a man of integrity.

Jon is survived by his wife, Mary, of their home; sons, Christopher Long and wife, Elizabeth, of Verona, Wisconsin, and Sergeant First Class David Long and wife, Renne, of San Antonio, Texas; brothers, Donald Long, Jr. and wife, Mary Ellen, of Appleton, Wisconsin, and Jay Long and wife Dina Alhadeff of Seattle, Washington; two grandchildren, Liam and Tori; nieces and nephews, and other extended family.

Larned – Virginia “Ginnie” Antoinette Roop, went home to her Lord and Savior on March 20, 2024, at the age of 63.

She was born December 20, 1960 in Phoenix, Arizona, the daughter of John W. and Mary H. Woodard Patterson. Ginnie grew up in the Arizona desert region, she graduated from high school and began to travel doing different jobs. &nbsp;She had life experiences in Idaho, Iowa, Wyoming and her final resting place in Hays, Kansas. &nbsp;She enjoyed baking, playing cards, riding horses, and rodeos. &nbsp;Ginnie loved living in the country and having fun with her family and friends. &nbsp;Her greatest passion was her children, grandkids and all her pets. She was a loving mother, sister, grandmother, enthusiastic person of life with a heart of gold,

Survivors include: son, Derrick Roop; two daughters, Mary Roop and Jonna (Josh Brown) Roop; three brothers, Jonathan Patterson, Brian Patterson, James Patterson; eight grandchildren, James Zoe) Peck, J.W. Perry, Kreisa Weston, Brianna Roop, Dakota (Brea) Fuller, Brett Fuller, Stella Roop, two great grandchildren, Mia and Kalila and her beloved dog Zella.

Virginia “Ginnie” Antoinette Roop

Elna Ann (LaRue) Kollman passed away at her home in Stockton, KS on March 23, 2024, at the age of 85. She was born at home near Laton, Kansas on June 8, 1938, to Arthur and Edna Lavern (Stillwell) LaRue. Elna married Connie Ray Kollman on January 18, 1959, in Stockton welcoming 5 children into the world, Jack, Chris, Kerry, Dean and Carla. She was blessed with 13 grandchildren and 17 great grandchildren. These children were her joy in life. She loved them all dearly and enjoyed spending time with them.

Elna grew up in Rooks County living in a variety of places until the family settled in Stockton, KS. She loved horseback riding and going to horse shows with her dad as a child.

After marrying Connie, she was a farm wife and mother until the family moved to town in 1972. She then worked at the Rooks County Nursing Home and later at Travenol in Hays, KS. She enjoyed carpooling to work each day with her dear friend Dena Beck who she continued having coffee and playing cards with until the day of her passing. She loved spending time with her siblings as well reminiscing and making new memories.

Elna worked to achieve whatever goal she had in mind. She encouraged those around her to be the best that they could be. She was a wonderful listener and cared deeply for the people in her life.

Elna is preceded in death by her parents, husband Connie, and two sons Kerry Kollman and Larry Dean Kollman.

Elna is survived by 3 children, Jack and Sheryl (Oliva) Kollman of Stockton, KS, Chris and Ginger (Dean) Kollman of Lawrence, KS, and Carla (Kollman) and David Chaffin of Linn Creek, MO; daughter-in-law Angie (Havlas) Kollman of Stockton; 13 grandchildren, Matthew Rush, Jacque (Wade) Inglsbee, Julia (Chad) Look, Brandon Kollman, Brett Kreutzer, Amber (Jeff) King, Grant (Kiah) Kollman, Nathan, Katie, Nick, and Kyle Kollman (Ashlyn), Heather (Zach) Pittman, Daniel (Kelsey) Chaffin; 17 great-grandchildren, Amelia Rush, Brodie and Brynlie Kreutzer, Owen Inglsbee, Conor and Crew Look, Caroline, Claire, and Clifford King, Kinsley and Carter Kollman, Dax Kollman, Asher, Zayne, and Jaxon Pittman, Laikyn and Lainey Chaffin; 4 siblings Donnie (Virgie) LaRue of Cortez, CO, Donna Swaney of Stockton, KS, Thelma Shover of Lakewood, CO, Delwin (Linda) LaRue of Stockton, KS; and many nieces and nephews.

Elna's selfless love guided by her faith in God was demonstrated in her life through her love and guidance of family, and through her job as a senior companion later in life. She was caring and supportive towards others, quick to share a smile, and always willing to listen. Elna will be dearly missed, but her love and caring will be celebrated for years to come.

She was born on November 18, 1947, at LaCrosse, Kansas to Sylvester and Alfreda (Pfeifer) Urban.&nbsp; She married Larry J. Leiker on May 6, 1972, at Hays, Kansas.

Donna retired in 2007 as a secretary from High Plains Mental Health, was a 1965 graduate from Victoria High School, and a member of Saint Francis of Assisi Catholic Church.&nbsp; She enjoyed her vegetable and flower gardening.&nbsp; Her pride and joy was her family and granddaughters.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

Donna is survived by her husband, Larry J. Leiker, of the home; her children, Clint Leiker and wife, Amy, Munjor, KS; Mandy Leiker, Munjor, KS; her granddaughters, Katelynn, Kyleigh, Kathleen and Klara Leiker; her brothers, Randy Urban and wife, Debbie, Loretta, KS; Barry Urban and wife, Shelly, Loretta, KS; her sister, Janice Urban, Hays, KS; and several nieces and nephews.

Charlotte was born November 8, 1922, in Ottumwa, Iowa, the daughter of Ellis and Laura (Winters) Murphy . &nbsp;She was a resident of McCracken, Kansas, since 2007 moving from Colorado. &nbsp;She attended Deer Trail schools in Deer Trail, Colorado. &nbsp;She was a school cook before her retirement.

She attended the McCracken Methodist Church, McCracken, Kansas.

On February 8, 1941, she married Philip Bernard Ochs at Littleton, Colorado . &nbsp;He preceded her in death November 13, 1964.

Survivors include: &nbsp;one son, Philip Ochs, Salina, Kansas; one daughter, Diana McNair, McCracken, Kansas; five grandchildren and five great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; one grandchild; one great grandchild;&nbsp; two daughters, Cleora Batrez, and Carol Ochs; and two sisters, Ruth, and Maxine.

Per Charlotte’s wishes, the family has chosen cremation.
