James Custer “Jim” Gregory, III, 79, passed away May 14, 2024, in Great Bend, Kansas. He was born December 6, 1944, to James, Jr., and Carol Lee (Arney) Gregory in Bethany, Missouri.

During his childhood, Jim was a member of the Boy Scouts of America, and loved to be around his dad and his airplane. After graduation from Shawnee Mission North High School in 1962, he attended junior college in Kansas City, Kansas, and worked at the Municipal Airport part time in Kansas City, Missouri.

When the Vietnam War escalated, he enlisted in the United States Air Force a week after he married his high school sweetheart, Virginia Barbara Gray, in July 1966. After returning stateside from Vietnam, he was stationed in Sacramento, California, and Cheyenne, Wyoming. After his discharge, Jim and Barbara settled in the Kansas City area, where he worked for his father at American Industrial Tool Company.

Jim moved to the Great Bend area in the early 1990’s, where he was part owner with Chuck Carpenter of RWI. He was a founding Charter Member of the Kansas Sidewinders Motorcycle Club, and served on various executive committees, sharing with his loved ones the activities and rides that he would participate in. Jim loved his Harley Davidsons and going to Sturgis every year with members of the club, plus to meet up with his brother, Terry.

Survivors include brother, Terry (Debra) Gregory; sister, Vicki (Joe) Kerkvliet; nieces and nephews; and all of his brothers - both active and retired - from the Kansas Sidewinders Club. He will be missed by all who knew and loved him.

He is preceded in death by his wife, Virginia Barbara Gregory; parents, James Jr. and Carol Gregory; paternal grandparents, James Sr. and Elsie Gregory; and maternal grandparents, Ray and Lola Arney.

Visitation will take place from noon to 8:00 p.m. Thursday, May 23, 2024, at Bryant Funeral Home. Funeral service will be held at 10:00 a.m. Friday, May 24, 2024, presided by Chuck Carpenter; with family receiving guests prior from 9:00 a.m. to 9:50 a.m., all at Bryant Funeral Home. Interment service will take place 9:30 a.m. Friday, May 31, 2024, at Black Hills National Cemetery in Sturgis, South Dakota, with military honors presented. It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Joe Lloyd Sproul, a beloved son, husband, father, brother, and grandfather. Born on Christmas Day in 1942 to Lloyd and Glenna Sproul, he lived a life filled with love and dedication to his family. He passed away on May 18, 2024, at Ascension Via Christi St. Francis in Wichita, Kansas.

Joe was united in marriage to Kandi Comstock on May 20th, 1962 at the United Methodist Church in Norton, Kansas. He remained a devoted husband for over six decades. Joe’s love for Kandi never wavered. Together they built a life full of memories that will be cherished forever.

Joe was a man of few words, but big talents and passions. As a farmer, he worked tirelessly to provide for his family and took great pride in nurturing the land that belonged to many generations of the Sproul and Comstock families. He also had a prestigious dairy farm during his early years that ran until 1984 where he milked over a hundred head of cattle. While his children were in school, Joe also served on the Lenora school board. Joe was also the Kansas state softball commissioner for the American Softball Association from 1995-2016. He coached many softball teams throughout his career. While coaching, he instilled values of teamwork and sportsmanship into countless young athletes including both of his daughters and granddaughters. Amongst one of his greatest accomplishments, he was inducted into the American Softball Association Hall of Fame in 2012 based on his numerous accomplishments and contributions to the game of softball which included bringing the USA Women’s Olympic Softball team to Topeka, KS to play the Kansas All-Stars in June of 2008.

In his early years, for fun, Joe would take motorcycle rides with Kandi as well as fly airplanes after he obtained his pilot’s license.

Joe found the most enjoyment in watching Gunsmoke, Mash, and The Game Show Network with Kandi and Dolly the dog by his side. He especially looked forward to seeing and spending time with his grandchildren.

Dean C. Speer, 55, died Friday May 17, 2024 at Lane County Hospital in Dighton, Kansas. He was born July 30, 1968 at Lane County Hospital in Dighton, Kansas; the son of Jarold Edwin and Elsie Beth (Johnston) Speer.

Dean was born and raised in Dighton, Kansas, where he graduated from Dighton High School in 1986. After high school, he attended McPherson College, where he studied and received a scholarship to play football. Though he enjoyed football, Dean found that his true calling was not in the classroom. He returned to Dighton to pursue a career in agriculture, becoming a full-time farmer and cattleman.

Not long after returning to Dighton, Dean met his ex-wife, Amy. Together, they had six children. Dean was a loving and devoted family man. He lived to be a father and loved every moment he spent raising children. His kindness, work ethic, and joyful personality was passed on to his children, whom he was immensely proud of.

In his earlier years, he attained his pilot's license, an achievement he was very proud of. Known for his work ethic and strength, Dean lived by the mantra, "anything worth doing is worth doing right." He loved the challenge of making something out of nothing whether it be creatively solving everyday problems or to bring happiness to his children. His dedication to his work was matched by his ability to bring joy and laughter to those around him. Dean had a knack for storytelling and a sense of humor that could light up any room. He enjoyed playing the guitar, listening to music, and spending time with his beloved dog, Ozzy. Dean also loved watching new shows and cherished moments with his friends and family.

Survivors include his children- Hannah Speer, Benjamin Speer, Leslie Alinor, Jordan Speer, Lani Speer, and Carlie Speer. Siblings- Lloyd Speer of Sylvan Grove, Doug Speer of Garden City, Kansas, James Speer of Hutchinson, Kansas, Brett Speer of Lake Hills, Texas, and Magen Speer of Scott City, Kansas. He is preceded in death by his parents and one brother- Jarrett Speer.

Alice Sanchez, age 84, passed away on Saturday, May 18, 2024, at her home in Kansas City, Kansas.

She was born in Post, Texas to Jose and Rafaela (Hernandez) Camargo on July 5, 1939. She was a member of the Leoti Community for a decade of her life with other years spent in Goodland, Topeka, Gardner, and Kansas City, Kansas.

Alice was a member of the Baptist church. She worked as a nurse aide, cook, and ran a restaurant in Goodland. She loved to cook and bake at home. She also spent time on her knitting &amp; crochet projects.&nbsp;

On June 9, 1986, Alice married Santos Sanchez in Goodland, Kansas. He passed away in November of 1999 in Russell, Kansas.

Alice is survived by her daughter Rosa Kennedy of Kansas City, Kansas, two grandchildren - Brittany King of Waterville, Minnesota, and&nbsp;Ricky Steele of De Soto, Kansas, two great-grandchildren - Elizabeth and Lucy, and&nbsp;two nieces -&nbsp;Velma Gill of Smith Center,&nbsp;Kansas, and Lori Gill of Honolulu, Hawaii.

She is preceded in death by her parents, husband, one sister (Stella Gill), and one brother-in-law(Jesse Gill).

Funeral Services will be held at the Price &amp; Sons Funeral Home, 4th &amp; J Street, Leoti, Kansas, at 2:30 on Saturday, May 25, 2024. Services will be live-streamed at PriceandSons.com &nbsp;

Alice Sanchez

Lois Maxine (Newell) Rethorst, daughter of Clare and Zona Newell was born December 31st, 1923, in Stafford, Kansas. She grew up on a farm south of Stafford and attended Eureka Country School with her brothers and sisters. She and her siblings walked one and a quarter mile to school daily.

She attended high school at Stafford, graduating in 1941. Following high school, she enrolled at Kansas State College where her sister was also attending. During her freshman year, her education was interrupted when her mother passed away. She dropped out of college and returned home to care for her father and three younger brothers. When her older sister graduated, she returned to the fam and Lois attended Grace Hospital School of Nursing in Hutchinson, Kansas. Upon receiving her RN, she returned to Stafford, working in the hospital and helping at home so her sister could pursue her Home Demonstration field of work. She later moved to Hutchingson, working at Grace Hospital and doctor’s clinic.

In June of 1951, she married Bob Rethorst and they moved to Spearville. After marriage, she continued working as an RN in Spearville and Ashland hospitals. Two children were born to this union, David and Susan. Lois did spend several years as a stay-at-home mom before the children started school. She later worked nearly 20 years as Dr. Hardman’s office nurse after the couple moved to Smith Center.

Lois was preceded in death by her husband, Robert (Bob) Rethorst, her parents, Clare and Zona Newell, stepmother Joyce Newell, sister Beth Holl and husband Ott, brother Calvin and wife Althea, brother Dean and wife Nina, brother Wayne and wife Shirley, and nephews Bradley Dean and Marc Newell, two sisters-in-laws Maurine Gregson and Hazel Lou Herron.

She is survived by her son David (Starla) Rethorst and their children, Chad (Erica) Rethorst, Justin (Tasha) Rethorst, Ashley (Wes) Hiser, great grandchildren Payton, Brooks, Everly, Maddox, Noah, Chase and Oliver;&nbsp;&nbsp; Daughter Susan (Tom) Hardacre and children Andi (Jason) Beckman, great grandchildren Kori, Kyler and Kenzie, Troy (Michelle) Hardacre and family, Bruce (Amber) Hardacre and family and Jennifer (Scott) Staab and family.

Celebration Of Life Service will be held at 10:00AM on Wednesday May 22, 2024 at the United Methodist Church in Smith Center, KS.

Burial will follow at 3:30PM in the Stafford Cemetery in Stafford, KS.

Lois Maxine (Newell) Rethorst

Connie Fae (Corwin) Allen, age 74, of Hays, Kansas passed away on Saturday, May 18, 2024, at the Republic County Hospital in Bellville, Kansas.

&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; She was born November 3, 1949, in Russell, Kansas to Albert “Bud” and Mary (Daugherty) Corwin.&nbsp; She married Jay Wickham Sr., and he preceded her in death.&nbsp; She then married Robert Dee “Bob” Allen on August 7, 1980, in Alva, Oklahoma.&nbsp;

&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Connie was a waitress at the Vagabond Restaurant in Hays for many years until it closed.&nbsp; She grew up in Plainville and was a 1968 graduate of Plainville High School.&nbsp; Her pride and joy was her family and grandchildren.&nbsp; She enjoyed her grandchildren’s activities, reading, going to the casinos, and her pet, “Coco”.

Martina (Kitzke) McCauley, 61, of Rosalia, KS, passed away peacefully Tuesday, May 7, 2024. 

She was born to Frank and Cordelia Kitzke of Logan, KS. She graduated from Logan High School and Brown Mackie of Salina. Martina went on to work at the El Dorado Correctional Facility in Honor Camp. She also worked at SRS of El Dorado, then DCF of El Dorado. Martina married Lou McCauley in April of 1999. She loved her family and friends above all, and didn't know a stranger! 

She also loved gardening, canning, houseplants, and her beloved cats. She will be missed dearly for her love and full of spunky self! She is preceded in death by her son, Cody, parents Frank and Cordelia, brother Reynold, sister’s Joycelyn Aliberti and LaDonna Mussett, and father -in- law Jim F. Cauley. She is survived by her husband, Lou, brother Del (Texi) Kitzke, sister Kaylene (Jim) Young, sister -in- law Debbie Sowder, and many nieces and nephews.&nbsp;

No services have been planned and a Celebration of Life will be announced at a later time.&nbsp;

Heather Dawn Schultze, age 46, passed away Thursday May 16, 2024, at Wesley Medical Center in Wichita, KS. She was born the daughter of Sheila Brummer on October 11, 1977, in Beloit, KS.

She graduated from Great Bend High School in 1994. After leaving Great Bend Pawnee Rock she moved to Summerfield, FL for 6 years before returning to her roots in Kansas settling in Coldwater in 2006. Her first-born child Dalton Lee Bailey was born in 2007.

In April of 2014 she met the man that she would marry and spend the rest of her short life with. She married Brent Schultze on October 10, 2015. They welcomed Peytyn on January 12, 2015. She was a CNA at OCMH for the last 9 years. She enjoyed Photography and it was her real passion.

She was the most honest and wholehearted person you could know, we will miss her laugh, her smile, her witty sense of humor, her NO BS attitude, Firey personality and her spirit every minute of every day.

She was preceded in death by her mother Sheila and her grandma Bev.

She is survived by her husband Brent, her daughter Peytyn, son Dalton, Stepson Kaiden, Stepdaughter Kinsley all of Osborne; her sister Amanda and her family; her brother AJ of Colorado; her Grandpa Wayne of Great Bend; many aunts, uncles and many nieces and nephews.

The family will hold a gathering on Thursday May 23, 2024, at the Sims Event Center in Osborne from 10:00AM until 2:00PM.

Willis Lee Becker was born December 31, 1931. He attended the Parochial Grade School at the Bethlehem Lutheran Church and graduated from the Sylvan Grove, KS High School in 1950.He joined the Navy Reserve as did his two brothers, Kenneth and a year later, Loren joined. The twins volunteered for active duty during the Korean War, during that time, Willis earned 4 battle stars. Upon returning home he was a lifetime farmer.

He played the clarinet in the Wilson Municipal Band, The Heart Of America Concert Band and other groups. The Harmony Four was a dance band that he and brother, Kenneth formed that played for weddings and other venues after being discharged.

He was an active life member of the VFW and American Legion for 70 years plus. He loved to volunteer in every organization he was a part of.

He recorded Sunday morning church services, advent and lent church services and delivered them to Senior Centers, shut-ins,and nursing homes.

He had many friends and never met a stranger. He will be missed , deep within our hearts we know that Willis is in heaven waiting for someone to play a joke on.

Willis was predeceased by his parents, John H. and Louise (Panzer) Becker, and a sister-in-law DiAnn Becker. He is survived by brothers Kenneth of Sylvan Grove, KS and Loren (and wife, Jeanne) of Duncan, OK, a niece, Taunya Campos (and husband, Arturo) of Alvarado, TX , a nephew, John Becker(and wife, Deborah) of Denver, CO, great nephews, Thomas and Steven Becker, Kolton Campos and a great niece, SaVana Campos.

Pamela Sue Patterson passed away Thursday May 16, 2024, at her home in Sublette, Kansas. She was born November 29, 1960 in Coffeyville, Kansas; the daughter of Arthur Leroy and Georgia Merle (Reed) Wade.

Pam graduated from Sedan High School in 1978 and married Dean Quentin Patterson June 18, 1983 in Peru, Kansas. The two relocated to Western Kansas in 1984 where they planted their roots and raised their two sons. Pam worked as a paraprofessional at Sublette Elementary School for many years until her retirement in 2018. Following her retirement, she dedicated her time to being a full-time Grammy to her four grandchildren.

She enjoyed traveling to Colorado, cooking and baking for her loved ones, gardening, trips to the zoo with her grandchildren, and she never turned down chocolate or a diet coke from Sonic! She was a kind, caring, and loving individual, known for being a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother and will be sorely missed by all who knew her.

John Francis Brent, age 82, of Ulysses, Kansas, passed peacefully on Friday, May 17, 2024, at Manor of the Plains in Dodge City, Kansas. He was born January 3, 1942, in Alton, Kansas, to Ola LeRoy and Helen Elizabeth (Weethee) Brent.

John married Janice Irene Troxel on December 23, 1962. They settled with their family in Ulysses. Their home provided a setting for many happy memories and family gatherings. John was an accomplished musician. He could hear something and play it with his own flair and style on the organ, piano, or his instrument of choice, the accordion. His passion for music was shared with many and was passed down to his children and grandchildren. John lived his last few years at Manor of the Plains in Dodge City and enjoyed the daily visits from Shelia. He loved flowers and they kept the flowerpots full.

John is survived by his sister, Roma Dorain York of Ft. Smith, Arkansas; three children, Cheryl James and husband, Charles, of Conroe, Texas, Gregg Brent and wife, Sandra, of Nokomis, Florida, and Shelia Eichman and husband, Laverne of Dodge City, Kansas; four grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, and one due in August.

John is preceded in death by his wife, Janice Irene (Troxel) Brent; brothers, Orman L. Brent, William Leroy Brent, and David Owen Brent; and sister, Irene Lucille Branham.

Virginia Lee (Armbruster) Loflin, age 88, passed away peacefully in her home on May 18 th, 2024, to be with her lord and savior, reuniting with Billy. She was born on June 22, 1935, in Hays, Kansas to Lou and Edna (Zachman) Armbruster. She graduated in 1952 from Ellis High School and received training at Steward Beauty Academy in Salina, working first at Paul’s Beauty Shop in Hays. She and a friend traveled by train to San Bernardino California where she worked as a nanny for about a year. She then moved to Ellis and worked for Adamine Keller at the Beauty Bungalow and later ran it. She married William David Loflin on July 28, 1955, where she lived and worked alongside Billy on his family farm south of Ogallah until moving to Ellis in 1992. She was a lifelong baptized member of Christ Lutheran Church in Ellis. She was on the church council, a member of Women of Life, the quilting group, and taught Sunday school. She made many quilts throughout her lifetime. She ran a bus for the WaKeeney school district for 30 years, gave tours at the Chrysler Boyhood Home, and worked for Ellis school district as a bus driver, lunchroom aid, and front office help while becoming “grandma” to many children. She was awarded the Teacher Hall of Fame this year by the Ellis High School Alumni Association.

Virginia is survived by. Two daughters, Tonya Keller husband Ernie of rural Trego County, and Geraldine (Jeri) Irwin/Jamison of WaKeeney. Five grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.  </figure>Virginia Lee (Armbruster) Loflin, age 88, passed away peacefully in her home on May 18 th, 2024, to be with her lord and savior, reuniting with Billy. She was born on June 22, 1935, in Hays, Kansas to Lou and Edna (Zachman) Armbruster. She graduated in 1952 from Ellis High School and received training at Steward Beauty Academy in Salina, working first at Paul’s Beauty Shop in Hays. She and a friend traveled by train to San Bernardino California where she worked as a nanny for about a year. She then moved to Ellis and worked for Adamine Keller at the Beauty Bungalow and later ran it. She married William David Loflin on July 28, 1955, where she lived and worked alongside Billy on his family farm south of Ogallah until moving to Ellis in 1992. She was a lifelong baptized member of Christ Lutheran Church in Ellis. She was on the church council, a member of Women of Life, the quilting group, and taught Sunday school. She made many quilts throughout her lifetime. She ran a bus for the WaKeeney school district for 30 years, gave tours at the Chrysler Boyhood Home, and worked for Ellis school district as a bus driver, lunchroom aid, and front office help while becoming “grandma” to many children. She was awarded the Teacher Hall of Fame this year by the Ellis High School Alumni Association.Virginia is survived by. Two daughters, Tonya Keller husband Ernie of rural Trego County, and Geraldine (Jeri) Irwin/Jamison of WaKeeney. Five grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Chong Cha Rundle, known to many as Wanda, passed away on May 17, 2024, at Ascension Living Via Christi Village in Hays. Born on December 4, 1940, in Seoul, South Korea, she lived a remarkable life full of love, compassion, and dedication.

Wanda dedicated many years of her life serving as caregiver and CNA at The Good Samaritan Society. Her commitment to caring for others left a lasting impact on those she had the privilege of helping. Beyond her professional endeavors, Wanda found joy in various hobbies and interests. She was an avid Bingo player, cherished spending time with her loved ones, and excelled in the art of knitting and crocheting.On September 13, 1966, Wanda embarked on a beautiful journey of love and partnership when she married Frederick Dean Rundle in Seoul. Together, they shared a deep bond that lasted a lifetime until Frederick's passing in 2020. Wanda proudly embraced her Korean heritage by sharing her family's traditional recipes with friends and loved ones—a testament to her culinary skills and cultural pride.

Wanda leaves behind a legacy of love and strength that will forever be cherished by her surviving family members: her daughters Angel Gray and Sue Ann Rundle of Hays; brothers-in-law Gary Rundle of Ottawa, Kansas, and Larry Rundle of Clay Center, Kansas; grandchildren Christopher Gray and Amanda Gray of Hays, Zachary Rundle of Olathe, Kansas, and Marissa Rundle of Hays; as well as six great-grandchildren with another on the way.

In addition to her immediate family, Wanda is preceded in death by her beloved husband Frederick Dean "Brahma" Rundle, parents Jae Bong and Kim Kan Lan, and sister Hong Che Lee.

The visitation for Wanda will be held at Brock's-Keithley Funeral Chapel and Crematory in Hays on May 24th from 9:00 AM to 10:00 AM followed by a joint service for Wanda and Frederick, inclusive of Military Honors for Frederick, from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM at the same location.

Wilma P. (Kurth) Lancaster, 94, passed away with her family by her side on May 12, 2024 at Country Living Nursing Home in Larned. She was born on February 20, 1930 in Ford County, Kansas the daughter of A.C. and Lena (Weiss) Kurth.&nbsp;

Wilma attended elementary school at the Golden Eagle School, District #14 located on her parents property. She graduated from Offerle High School in 1947 as class Valedictorian. On September 11, 1947 she married R. Duane Lancaster. They were privileged to spend 57 years together.

She was first and foremost a farm wife and helped in all aspects of farming. Wilma also was the lunchroom manager at the Offerle Middle School from 1970 to 1984. She then took the job as rural mail carrier at the Offerle Post Office. Wilma worked there from 1984 until her retirement in January of 1998. She was a member of Zion Lutheran Church, LWML of Offerle, American Legion Auxiliary, National Association Retired Federal Employees, National Rural Letter Carriers Association, and Red Hats of Edwards County.

Wilma is survived by her children, Sidney Hicks of Offerle, Shelley Schmidt and husband Dale Haselhorst of Hays, and Bret Lancaster and wife Debbie of Offerle; 7 grandchildren, 13 great grandchildren, 1 great great grand daughter, 5 step grandchildren, 12 step great grandchildren, and 4 step great great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Duane; a daughter, Sharolyn; a great grandson, Stanton Lancaster, 4 brothers, Rev. Woodrow Kurth, Rev Homer Kurth, twins, Reinhart and Gerhart Kurth, and 2 sisters, Gertrude Witte and Vera Buss. She loved spending time with all her grandchildren and great grandchildren and looked forward to their visits and going to their ball games and activities.

Esther “Mae” Wilkens, of Stockton, KS, passed away on May 13, 2024, in Hays, KS at the age of 86. She was born on July 29, 1937, to Ernst August Martin and Blanche Orene (Stamper) Erdman in Dundy County, NE. She married Arthur “Art” Wilkens on November 28, 1956, at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Benkelman, NE. They were blessed with seven children: Chuck, Debra, Kent, Steven, Tony, Brenda, and Lisa.

Mae graduated from Haigler High School in 1955. She met Art while working in Benkelman as a nurse’s aide. Once married, Mae devoted herself with great care to the good of her family. Mae went to Northwest Kansas Vocational Technical School in Goodland, KS and completed the office occupations course. Her family is proud that she was named Student of the Year in 1981 at her graduation!

Mae was a homemaker. She loved music, gardening, sewing, canning, cooking, baking, and people. Being quick to care, her nurse’s spirit never waned. She enjoyed traveling as the opportunities came, whether with her husband, friends, or family. She enjoyed making everything beautiful, whether setting a beautiful table or watering flowers. Her house was often filled with music, especially around the holidays. She loved making memories with her children and grandchildren gathered around the piano. Having accumulated wisdom through the years, Mae was known for sage advice. She never proclaimed to be perfect yet did her best in every situation to love others well. Never outwardly boisterous, she was nonetheless a courageous woman. Mae overcame a fear of water by learning to swim in her forties. She went through flight school to be a better co-pilot for Art. Behind every good man is a strong woman, and Mae walked with firm support for her husband throughout life. She was brave, but gentle, and always kind. Mae will be greatly missed.

&nbsp;Thomas Carrow, 80, of Atwood, died May 8, 2024. He was born on September 20, 1943, in Kane, PA, to George and Eugenia (Suain) Carrow. Two years later, a sister, Sallie, was born. The family lived in Hazel Hurst, PA, until George took a job with Getty Oil and the company asked him to move to Illinois. Tom was 12 years old when they moved to Robinson, Illinois.

Tom had attended Hazel Hurst Elementary and Robinson Middle School before graduating from Robinson High School. He took classes at Eastern Illinois University and worked for Marton Oil and Getty Oil. Tom also taught 6th grade for one year at Muffley Grade School. From 1966-1969, he served in the United States Army. Tom did his basic training at Fort Benning where he made Lieutenant, and was stationed in Germany during his service. Upon his return from the Army, he bought a motorcycle and traveled the Alcan Highway, in Alaska.

In 1971, Tom moved to Castro Valley, CA, where he met Denise “Dee” Torak. They were married in 1972 and to this union three children were born. In 1975, the family moved back to Illinois and Tom worked for Getty Oil. They built a home on five acres near Hardinville, IL, where they lived until 1984, when they moved to Colorado. There Tom worked for Koch Fiberglass and helped grow the company in Canada and California. He sold fiberglass pipe to distributors and then helped install pipe. They lived in Elizabeth, CO for 23 years before buying a farm near Atwood, KS and moving there. In Atwood he was a member of the Masonic Lodge #164 and enjoyed garage sales, auctions and the farm.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a stillborn sister.

Tom is survived by his wife of 52 years, Dee; daughter Laura (Tony) McDonald; sons, Matt Carrow (Kendall Tinnes) and Mike Carrow; four grandchildren, Sierra Scott, Adrianna Tinnes, Teagan Carrow and Wyatt Carrow; sister Sallie (Dan) Cougill and nephew Rick Oliver

Thomas Carrow

Dennis Ray Hansen was born in Smith Center, Kansas on December 1, 1946, to Maurice and Betty (Hughes) Hansen. He passed from this earth on May 11th, 2024, at the age of 77. Dennis had been diagnosed with ALS in October of 2023 and had struggles with this but kept on doing most of the things he enjoyed.

He attended Smith Center grade school and high school graduating in 1964 with cherished memories of his classmates and school days.

He married Kathy (Ayres) Hansen, a Smith Center native on August 12th, 1972, at the Congregational Church. The day of the wedding was so hot the candle melted over. They have lived their entire married life in Smith Center and celebrated their 50th anniversary in 2022. Their son Seth Nichols was born on June 21st, 1976, and was Dennis’s pride and joy.

Dennis had different jobs during his youth and after. He worked for Harry Lattin at the Home Oil Company on Main Street. He worked for the State of KS Highway Department a couple years prior to joining the Army in 1965 and was posted in the Dominican Republic and West Point in New York state before being discharged in 1967. He drove a truck for Mini Max Provisions. He went to work for Maynard Frank at the John Deere dealership as a mechanic and when Maynard sold, Dennis worked for Milton Ouderkirk at the new dealership (Smith County Implement) as a parts man and sales representative. When Milton passed, Dennis bought Milton’s half of the dealership and later purchased the other half. He was the owner of Phillips County Implement later until he sold both dealerships in 2000. He stayed busy with various part time jobs including driving for Peterson Industries, delivering for the local drug stores, and driving the bus for City Transportation.

He was a lifetime member of the Kingsbury-Chase VFW #1141, Smith Center, where he has been commander for several years, American Legion Post #220, Smith Center, Rotary before it disbanded, Center Township Clerk and enjoyed being a part of Fairview Cemetery work through the board. He served on the Chamber of Commerce Board, Old Settler’s Day Committee, and Center Cruzers. He became a member of the Employer’s in Support of the National Guard team (ESGR) for 35 years and helped active Guard members get back their jobs, if necessary, when they returned from duty. He was a member of Kansas STARBASE Program from 2004 through 2010 and was Vice-President for four years. Helping any way he could the Military and Veteran’s was extremely important to him. It gave him immense pride to be a part of the VFW Color Guard for Veteran’s services and to lead parades or wherever a Color Guard was needed.

In 2023, Dennis and Kathy were honored to be selected as King and Queen for Old Settler’s Day.

Dennis was able to go on the Honor Flight to Washington D.C. with his brother Rodney and loved the trip and the time they had together.

Dennis loved sports and his love for the Redmen increased two-fold when Seth became a part of the Junior High and Senior High Redmen teams. He helped with Redcaps and very seldom missed a football game, wrestling or track meet. He attended anything Seth was involved with and helped with Post Prom. He tracked Coconino High School in Arizona where nephew Yancy Ayres was an active athlete.

Dennis’s 1969 Plymouth Sport Satellite was the car he had enjoyed the most as when he purchased it, he said, Plymouth’s were what his dad drove most. Spending time at weekend car shows and in July the Salina Lead Sled was a yearly event with Seth, classmates and friends.

He was a faithful member of the First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) and had worked on many church programs and events.

Dennis was preceded in death by his parents, Betty Hansen and Maurice Hansen, his in-laws that he loved like parents, Burl and Margaret Ayres, six siblings, Don, Cathy Howton, Jerry Hughes, Mary Marye, David and Karl, brother-in-law, Tom Ayres and other sister and brothers-in-law.

Dennis is survived by wife, Kathy, son Seth, brothers, Wayne (Jane), Rodney (Mary); sisters-in-law, Karen (Ayres) Keatley, Joann Hansen Storer and brother-in-law, Bruce Marye.

Dennis was willing to help in any situation and had many dear and special friends. He was loved by many and will be deeply missed.

Brenda May Glenn was born May 11, 1952 in Holdrege, NE, the daughter of James &amp; Geraldine (Steinke) Hutchens. &nbsp;She passed away peacefully on May 4, 2024 at the Andbe Home in Norton, KS at the age of 71.

On May 31, 1970, Brenda was united in marriage to Eric Glenn while he was enlisted in the USAF &amp; stationed at Scott AFB in Belleville, IL. &nbsp;Their second duty station was Kadena AFB in Okinawa, Japan. Upon leaving the service in 1973, the couple returned to Norton. &nbsp;

In 1984, opportunities took them to Shawnee, KS for 2 years, LaMars, IA for 7 years &amp; Bella Vista, AR for 22 years where she worked as an executive assistant for the Walmart Pharmacy warehouse division. &nbsp;They retired to Roswell, NM &amp; after 2 years they returned to Norton to be close to family.

Brenda enjoyed scrapbooking &amp; stamping up.

She was preceded in death by her mother, Geraldine Hutchens, her brother-in-law David Poage &amp; her nephew, Chester Poage.

Survivors include her husband Eric of the home; her father, James Hutchens of Norton; her daughter Heather Bensyl of Kentwood, MI; her son Christopher of Norton; sisters, Rebecca Vansickler of Bella Vista, AR &amp; Dottie Poage of Norton &amp; 2 grandchildren, Sophia Bensyl &amp; Parker Wiese.

A graveside service for family and close friends &nbsp;will be held Sat. May 18 at 2:00 p.m. in the Norton Cemetery with Bishop Josh Choate officiating.&nbsp;

Zelda Marie Wallgren, 92, of Scottsdale, AZ passed away on January 2, 2024 and she was born July 8, 1931 in Naponee, Nebraska to Blanche (Bradley) Bushnell.

Zelda as a child lived in Kansas, Idaho, and Utah, returning to Speed, Kansas at age 10. She attended schools in Speed and Phillipsburg.

She was married to Leonard Wallgren on June 5, 1948, and they were married for 62 years. They lived, worked, and raised their family in Logan, KS until 1980 when they moved to Colorado Springs, CO. Zelda and Leonard retired in 2000, moving to Sun City, AZ.

She is survived by two children, Marla (Kent) Lang of Scottsdale, AZ and Eric Wallgren of Palm Springs, CA, 2 grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.

Zelda enjoyed reading, playing cards, traveling, and being outside visiting with family and friends. She will be remembered as a truly kind and caring person. She will be deeply missed by those whose lives she touched.

A graveside service will be held on May 28, 2024 at 11 am at Pleasant View Cemetery in Logan, Kansas.

 </figure>James Custer “Jim” Gregory, III, 79, passed away May 14, 2024, in Great Bend, Kansas. He was born December 6, 1944, to James, Jr., and Carol Lee (Arney) Gregory in Bethany, Missouri.During his childhood, Jim was a member of the Boy Scouts of America, and loved to be around his dad and his airplane. After graduation from Shawnee Mission North High School in 1962, he attended junior college in Kansas City, Kansas, and worked at the Municipal Airport part time in Kansas City, Missouri.When the Vietnam War escalated, he enlisted in the United States Air Force a week after he married his high school sweetheart, Virginia Barbara Gray, in July 1966. After returning stateside from Vietnam, he was stationed in Sacramento, California, and Cheyenne, Wyoming. After his discharge, Jim and Barbara settled in the Kansas City area, where he worked for his father at American Industrial Tool Company.Jim moved to the Great Bend area in the early 1990’s, where he was part owner with Chuck Carpenter of RWI. He was a founding Charter Member of the Kansas Sidewinders Motorcycle Club, and served on various executive committees, sharing with his loved ones the activities and rides that he would participate in. Jim loved his Harley Davidsons and going to Sturgis every year with members of the club, plus to meet up with his brother, Terry.Survivors include brother, Terry (Debra) Gregory; sister, Vicki (Joe) Kerkvliet; nieces and nephews; and all of his brothers, both active and retired, from the Kansas Sidewinders Club. After graduating high school, Linda obtained her Bachelor’s degree. She took a lifetime career in teaching in Marion and Hutchinson school districts. In her free time, she loved to travel extensively and expanded her knowledge of the world.

Survivors include several cousins including Larry Rasek of Ft. Collins, Colorado, numerous students she taught, and abundance of friends she met through the years on her travels.

Chip Miller passed away on September 6, 2023 in McAlester, Oklahoma at the age of 76.

Chip was born in Goodland, KS on October 1, 1946 to Alexander and Della Mae (Gotchall) Miller. &nbsp; He graduated from Goodland High School in 1964. &nbsp;He attended Vo-Tech and studied auto mechanics. &nbsp;Shortly thereafter, he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps. &nbsp; He was very proud of his corps and his country. &nbsp;During his enlistment, he fought in the Vietnam War and received many honors, but it was the Purple Heart that he treasured the most.
