Richard Lee Blake, 70, passed away May 23, 2024, at University of Kansas Health Systems – ER, Great Bend, Kansas. He was born on October 6, 1953, in Hays, Kansas to James and Ella “Lee” (Duke) Blake. On May 13, 1975, he married Joan Gardner in Townsend, Massachusetts; they later divorced.

A lifetime resident of Hoisington, Kansas, Richard worked as a manager and cook at The Rack Billiard Café. Prior to that, he spent most of his life working in the oilfield. He enjoyed watching sports, including the Kansas City Chiefs, and spending time with his family, especially with his grandson.

Survivors include daughter, Cindy Blake of Great Bend; grandson, James Blake of Great Bend; three brothers, Bill Blake and wife, Pat, of San Diego, California, Mike Asbury of Winfield, Kansas, and John Massey of Plymouth Falls, Oregon; numerous nieces and nephews; and ex-wife, Joan.

He is preceded in death by his parents; brother, James Blake, Jr.; sisters, Connie Vasquez and Pam Moore; and grandparents, Robert and Clemmie Bradley.

Karen S. Spears, 78, passed away May 25, 2024, at her home in Great Bend, Kansas. She was born on May 2, 1946, in Great Bend, Kansas, to Samuel and Delores (Thompson) Ward. On June 10, 1966, she married Alfred “Al” Spears in Great Bend. He passed on April 15, 1975.

A lifetime Great Bend resident, Karen worked as a lay away manager and in other positions at Wal-Mart for over 25 years. Prior to that, she worked for Dart-In for 15 years. She was a member of AFT Hutchinson. Raised on a farm, Karen was a “country girl living in a small town” who loved animals, especially cats and horses, and was a loving and generous mother.

Survivors include three sons, Donnie E. Beeler of Great Bend, Loren Duane Spears and wife Gretchen of Noblesville, Indiana, and Tracy Allen Spears of Great Bend; thirteen grandchildren; numerous great-grandchildren; several great-great-grandchildren; two brothers, Robert Ward of Anthony, and David Ward of Sedelia; two sisters, Mildred Dills of Great Bend, and Cheryl Thompson of Versailles, Missouri; and stepmother, Anneliese Ward of Great Bend.

She is preceded in death by her husband; her parents; two brothers, Bruce and Donnie Ward; and brother-in-law, Bennie Dills.

Larned – Darold Lee Bussard, 77, passed away May 24, 2024 at Diversicare of Larned. &nbsp;He was born November 24, 1946 in Mulhall, OK, the son of Thomas Vincent and Charlottie Verlen Dick Bussard. &nbsp;A lifetime area resident, he was retired from Dillons and the Pawnee County Courthouse.

He was of the Catholic faith and was a member of the American Legion and served in the United States Army.

On November 26, 1966, he married Rebecca Edith Wren in Larned. &nbsp;She passed away January 6, 2018.

Survivors include: daughter, Sheila Converse, Larned; brother, Willis “Willy” and wife Susie Doggett, Mulhall, OK; sister, Carmen and husband Don Conard, Edinburg, VA and two granddaughters, Savanna Converse and Jaci Converse, both of Larned, numerous nieces and nephew and his dog, JJ.

He was preceded in death by four brothers, Dean, Jerry, Max and his twin brother, Harold Bussard and his step mother, Lena Rae Long Bussard.

Funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Thursday, May 30, 2024 at Beckwith Mortuary, Larned, with Pastor David Spare presiding. &nbsp;Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Beckwith Mortuary. &nbsp;Burial will be in the Larned Cemetery, Larned, with military graveside rites.

Terrell Joseph Racette passed away on May 18, 2024, in his home.

&nbsp;Born on April 26, 1954, in Oakley, KS, he was the son of George Racette and Verlene (Brungardt) Racette. Terrell retired from the USPS after 33 years of dedicated service.

Terrell enjoyed hunting, fishing, playing cards, and visiting with his family. He was an avid fan of the Kansas City Chiefs, Kansas City Royals, and KU Jayhawks, rarely missing a game. Above all, he cherished time spent with his grandchildren.

In 1976, Terrell married Leann Jantz, and together they had one son, Ty Racette. They later divorced. In 2023, he married Monica Yun, she survives.

Other survivors include his son, Ty Racette (Allisa) of Larned; mother, Verlene Herrman of Manhattan, KS; sister, Cindy Kinsley of Manhattan, KS; brother, Jeff Racette of Manhattan, KS; grandson, Cash Racette of Larned; granddaughter, Baylor Racette of Larned; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his brothers, Brad and Allen Racette, and his father, George Racette.&nbsp;

Terrell Joseph Racette

Georgia Jane Moore, 98, Hays, died Thursday, March 21, 2024 at Trego-Lemke Memorial Hospital Long Term Care.

She was born October 25, 1925 on a Rawlins County farm in far northwest Kansas. Her parents, George and Edith (Kleint) Wolfram, were first generation Americans. All four of her grandparents were born in Europe and immigrated to the United States from Austria and Germany. Georgia was the middle child of three sisters and named after her father. And like him, she was a voracious reader all of her life. Along with her older sister, she took an active role in the work needed to handle a farming and livestock operation. Hers was a family without sons. She said, “My sister and I were the boys, we worked with our dad.” A harvest hand once called the girls “workin’ fools.”

Georgia graduated from Herndon High School with the Class of 1943 and was its last surviving member. She and her sisters followed the lead of their Aunt Alma Kleint by attending and graduating from Fort Hays State. They were second generation Fort Hays Staters. Georgia’s chosen fields were business and education and she excelled in both. At the conclusion of World War II, she met Ed Moore upon his return to Hays. They married in 1948 and celebrated their 72nd wedding anniversary on May 1, 2020. He predeceased her four weeks later.

In 1965, she and Ed established Moore Tours International, a travel agency that they would operate for the next 50 years. This agency afforded her the opportunity to become a world traveler and tour guide. She excelled in both. People appreciated the way she took care and watched after them when they were out of the United States or in Washington, D.C. for a scholastic tour. 

Her pastimes even as a young person included knitting and baking. Her Christmas fruitcakes were of her own recipe and were exquisite. She continued to enjoy these pastimes all her life. 

She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Hays. Her faith was an important part of her life. Long before she became an elder in the Presbyterian Church, she was a Sunday school teacher for elementary and junior high students. Georgia was able to live in her own home until the last four weeks of her life.

Survivors include her son Ed Moore of Excelsior Springs, MO, daughter Renee Garrett (Steve Jorgensen) of Hays, sister Lois Horner (Aubrey) of Alvin, TX, grandsons David Bendett (Amber) of Corpus Christi, TX and Greg Moore of Excelsior Springs, MO, granddaughter Rachel Moore of Fayette, MO, and great grandchildren Tristan Moore and Cadence and Zion Bendett.

She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, a daughter-in-law Theresa Moore, a sister Anna Mae Ketterl, brother-in-law, Clarence Ketterl, a brother-in-law Dennis Leitner, and a great-granddaughter Eden Bendett.

Funeral services will be at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, June 1, 2024 at the First Presbyterian Church with Rev. Christine Wagner officiating. Inurnment will follow in Mount Allen Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 12:00 p.m. until service time on Saturday, June 1, 2024 at the church.

Maudie Chaffin, age 87, of Johnson, Kansas, died Thursday, May 23, 2024, at the Stanton County Hospital in Johnson. She was born on June 28, 1936, in Slegman, Missouri, the daughter of Nels and Rozella (Carroll) Jensen.

Maudie grew up in Slegman, Missouri, and graduated from Slegman High School. She married Barry R. Chaffin on December 25, 1982, in Johnson, Kansas. Maudie worked at K&amp;S Meats, was a dietician and CNA at Stanton County Hospital, Stanton County Long Term Care Unit in Johnson, and also at Western Prairie Care Home in Ulysses. She and Barry owned and operated Top Hat Tavern.

Maudie is survived by her children, Jerry Twilleger and wife, Sharon, of Garden City, Kansas, Randy Twilleger and wife, Sherri, of Cañon City, Colorado, John Twilleger of Paola, Kansas, Sherry Twilleger of Johnson, Kansas, and Mark Twilleger of Johnson, Kansas; and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Dennis Leon Brungardt, 69, of Lake Charles, Lousiana, passed away Sunday, May 19, 2024, at a local hospital. Dennis was born December 9, 1954, in WaKeeney, KS. to Seraphine and Bridget Brungardt.

After High School, Dennis obtained an associate degree in commercial refrigeration. He enjoyed working and time on the family farm. After his accident he rebuilt auto pilots for aviation industry. He later earned an accounting degree from Wichita State University.

Dennis enjoyed playing wheelchair basketball, bowling and later joined the wheelchair tennis USA Team where he won multiple tournaments. He moved to Louisiana in 2009 and enjoyed playing cards at the casino. He was a devoted father and grandfather.

Wallie Allen Thornburg

&nbsp;Freya Anderson, age 67, of Colby, died May 22, 2024, at Citizens Medical Center. Freya was born January 21, 1955, in Worcester MA, pronounced WOOSTA! Freya was a member of the United States Navy from 1975-1981. After the Navy Freya worked for Worcester Orthopedics building prosthetics, and Pratt Whitney as a jet engine fabricator, including parts for the space program. Freya was a great lover of craft models, reading, and anything to do with Star Trek. 

Freya retired early from The City of Manchester Parks and Recreations cemetery department following a life changing car accident. From that accident a marriage came about to Denise Anderson, who was one of the nurses who cared for Freya in the hospital. They lived together in Portsmouth NH from 2005-2018 when they moved to Colby to be close to Courtney and the grandkids. After Denise passed in 2019 Freya embraced her true self and became Freya Jord Anderson and lived a happy and loving life with the support of her family and friends.

Freya was preceded in death by Janet Chase, Richard’s mother, and Denise Anderson, Courtney's mother.

Freya is survived by children, Richard, of Goffstown, NH and Courtney, of Goodland KS and grandchildren, Bailey Britton and Logan Britton.

A celebration of life will be from 1:00 pm-4:00 pm, Wednesday, June 5, 2024, at The Gathering Place in Colby KS. Cremation was chosen. There will be no inurnment. Freya Anderson

Virginia Louise Deines, 96, died May 21, 2024, at St. Andrews at Francis Place in Eureka, Missouri. &nbsp;She was born August 6, 1927, in Hoisington, Kansas, the daughter of Benjamin L. and Ada Correne (Maiden) Shull. &nbsp;Virginia graduated from Hoisington High School in 1945.

On April 4, 1947, she married Reuben R. Deines, in Butler County, Kansas. He preceded her in death on June 6, 2003.

Virginia and Reuben raised their family in Hoisington, where they were members of the First United Methodist Church, and she was active in the Order of the Eastern Star Golden Sheaf Chapter #226. Virginia worked as a medical records technician for Central Kansas Medical Center in Great Bend. After retirement they would winter in Texas. In 1998 they decided to move permanently to Texas and resided in the Alamo area. Virginia spent 10 years in Texas until moving closer to her daughter in Missouri living in Ellisville and then Eureka for the past 16 years.

She is survived by her three children; David R. Deines of Wichita, Linda D. Varner and husband Don of Wildwood, Missouri, and Dale B. Deines of Salina; three grandchildren, Adam Varner of Winchester, Missouri, Rachel M. Varner of Chesterfield, Missouri; and Kristina Brengle of Valley Park, Missouri; and a great-grandson, Kaden Brengle.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, a brother, Benjamin Earl Shull, and a grandson, PFC Paul N. Varner.

Funeral service will be 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, May 28, 2024, at the First United Methodist Church, with Pastor Daniel Vandenburg presiding. Burial will follow in Hoisington Cemetery.

Virginia Louise Deines

Fikret Koşan of Benbrook, Texas, passed away on May 17th, 2024. Gentle and reserved, he could not help but endear himself to almost everyone he met.

Fikret was born to Bosnian immigrants in Burhaniye, on the western coast of Turkey on May 15th, 1937. When he was a young boy, his older brother "taught him how to swim" by throwing him off a pier into the ocean. Luckily, Fikret was a fast learner, a skill that would serve him throughout his life. Later, he would become a semi-professional soccer player in the prestigious "striker" position.

His mother's philosophies had a major impact on him. Widowed when Fikret was just a baby, she refused to remarry and let a "surrogate father" raise her son. After his brothers were conscripted into the military, Fikret took it upon himself to support his mother. Starting around age 8, he took on several odd jobs so he could bring money back home to her. During his school days, he developed a life-long interest in world history, especially the Greek, Roman, and Ottoman empires.

As a young man, Fikret joined the Turkish air force and was trained as a radar engineer. In 1966, while stationed in Denver and undergoing advanced technical training, he met his future wife, Mary Ann. Mary Ann was a farmer’s daughter and ballroom dancer from Garden City, Kansas. After receiving her parents’ blessing, the couple moved to Turkey and were married in a civil ceremony on March 30th, 1967. This was kept secret from the Turkish air force because of an Ottoman-era law prohibiting the marriage of military personnel to foreign women. Fikret remained an officer in the Turkish air force while also working as a computer engineer for IBM. During this time, the couple visited the villages of Mary Ann's Greek ancestors and the Seven Churches of Asia Minor.

In 1971, Fikret took a job as a computer field technician in Omaha, Nebraska so Mary Ann could be closer to her aging parents in Kansas. He took classes and became a naturalized citizen. They also lived for several years in Las Cruces, New Mexico before retiring and settling in Benbrook, Texas.

Throughout his life, Fikret was fiercely loyal to his family and to the United States. In the latter portion of his career, he worked for a US defense contractor as a radar and computer technician. During that time, he supported projects that saved the lives of countless American soldiers.

Fikret is survived by his son Gem, and daughter-in-law Sarah. He was preceded in death by his father Musa, his brother Muzaffer, his mother Nazmiye, his brother&nbsp;Sükrü, and his wife Mary Ann.

A service in honor of Fikret Koşan will be held at Garnand Funeral Chapel in Garden City, Kansas on Saturday, May 25th at 10 am. He will be laid to rest at Valley View Cemetery next to his wife Mary Ann.

Quentin Lindahl Griffith, age 69, of Elkhart, Kansas, died Saturday, May 18, 2024, at Southwest Medical Center in Liberal, Kansas. He was born September 26, 1954, in Elkhart, the son of C. Lyndon and Irene Gladys (Lindahl) Griffith.

Quentin grew up in Elkhart and graduated from Elkhart High School in 1973. While in high school, he belonged to the Spanish Club and made long lasting high school friendships. He then attended various colleges including Kansas University and Kansas State University. He worked as a security guard and also for Colorado Interstate Gas at one of the compressor stations.A highly intelligent individual, he invented and owned a patent for an Impact Sensing Vest.&nbsp; When wearing the vest, if you were shot it sent a signal to your command center. Quentin married Margaret “Maggie” Ann Dean on June 15, 1990, in Chickasha, Oklahoma, where they made their home. He loved her dearly, and they were married 32 years until her death in 2023. Quentin will always be remembered for his dry sense of humor.

Quentin is survived by his sister, Catherine Ann Griffith of Vancouver, Washington; niece, Cara Bailey and husband, Adam, and family; and nephew, Tim O’Neill and wife, Jill, and family.

He is preceded in death by his wife, Margaret Ann “Maggie” Griffith; parents, C. Lyndon and Irene Griffith; and brother, Clarence L. Griffith.

Ernest (Ernie) Sarles, 61, died Sunday, May 19, 2024, at his home in Garden City, Kansas. He was born on November 5, 1962, in Rock Springs, Wyoming the son of Sherill Garland &amp; Gayle Powell.

Ernie grew up and attended High School in Dodge City, Kansas. He moved to Garden City in 1993 and worked various jobs as a mechanic. A car and motorcycle enthusiast, he also cherished the outdoors, spending time with loved ones and taking his Harley out for rides.

Survivors include his Wife- Michelle Sarles, Children- Linda &amp; Kenny Gossman, Mace &amp; Kylie Sarles, Raven Sarles, Chase Trussell, and Brooke Garvey, Mother- Gayle Powell, Siblings- Mike Sarles, Eugene Sarles, and Sheryl “Annie” Opdycke and 14 Grandchildren. Ernest "Ernie" Sarles

Judith (Judy) Lee Hineman Sjoberg was born May 13, 1943 and passed away peacefully on March 15, 2024. Judy was born in Manhattan, KS to Kalo and Geneva Hineman. She grew up on the family farm near Dighton, KS and was the oldest of four. Her Western Kansas roots were deep, as well as her love for family.

Growing up, Judy played the piano and flute, and excelled at big sister duties to her siblings, Tom, Don and Linda, as well as nearly 50 first cousins. She relished hunting for arrowheads and shark teeth with her beloved Grandmother Nancy Esther Hineman throughout Lane County. Her high school days were filled with joy as she cheered on her hometown Dighton Hornets.

Judy went to the University of Kansas and pledged Alpha Phi. She loved being a “coed” as she called it and thrived at KU and the Elementary Education Department. It was her Sophomore year when she went on a blind date. When standing on her date’s fraternity house steps, he introduced her to his Pledge Dad, Dave Sjoberg. When Judy and her date got in his car, Judy couldn’t stop asking about Dave. When Judy’s date got back to his house, his Pledge Dad couldn’t stop asking about Judy. The poor guy finally threw his hands in the air and exclaimed, “Fine! You two can have each other!” It was truly love at first sight.

Dave took a job in Denver, CO, so Judy followed the love of her life and finished her college days in Boulder attending the University of Colorado. However, her heart always remained true to the Kansas Jayhawks.

Judy and Dave married on May 24, 1964. Judy taught school in Denver and fell in love with teaching fourth grade. She was a conscientious, well-prepared and loving teacher who connected with all her students, especially through creative science experiments. Together Dave and Judy crafted a full and beautiful life in Colorado, always taking advantage of the beauty and glory of the Rocky Mountains.

Judy was an extraordinary Mom to her kids, Scott and Kristen. She was the I-am-always-here-for-you-and-I-love-you-oodles-and-gobs kind of Mom. She happily volunteered for any and all activities and made sure that the Sjoberg household was welcoming, full of faith and happiness and that nightly family dinners preceded by prayer were a must. She often stayed up into the wee hours of the night waiting for her teenage kids to arrive home safely. She defined the term unconditional love.

The beach was a special place for Judy, with shells being a fascination of hers. Whether on the beach, a mountain hike (with “gorp” for all) or a simple walk in the neighborhood, she could often be found with her head down scanning for nature’s treasures.

Judy was a voracious reader and a lifelong student. She prided herself in sliding big and impressive words into her daily talk, leaving all impressed and a few scratching heads. She had an open mind and heart, which made her an exceptionally loving and accepting person with the biggest of hearts. She was always the champion of the underdog in everything. Through the years, many a kid has called “Mama Jude” their second Mom - making her happy beyond belief.

After her kids were grown, Judy began a second career in selling computer training, school furniture and A/V equipment. With her people skills, she was a natural at sales.

Judy and Dave moved to Kansas City in 2009 to be closer to their kids, six grandkids and "Outlaws." She found “Gramsie” to be her absolute favorite title in life. She loved spending one-on-one time with her “Grands” and was never happier than when the “Dirty Dozen” was together.

Together Judy and Dave with their son, Scott, and his wife, Kami, started Right At Home - Kansas City, an in-home care and assistance company in Overland Park, KS. Judy was involved with the business on a daily basis for several years. Right At Home was tailor-made for her; working with seniors to remain in their home and age in place showcased her loving heart and kindness.

She was a lover of people of all kinds, the last to leave a party or church. Throughout her life, Judy collected friends just like she collected shells, rocks and one-liners. She loved the color blue, ice cream, being a farm girl, cooking Chinese food, her faith, family, friends, genealogy, jazz music, crossword puzzles, hiking, museums, traveling, reading, butterflies, cats, sleeping in and did we mention people?

When Judy was first diagnosed with Alzheimer’s, she was adamant to be a part of the solution and the cure. She participated in several clinical trials with determination and urgency. Having seen her Dad fight the disease, she was fueled by a resolve to learn all she could about prevention and management. She proudly arranged for her brain to be donated to the KU Alzheimer’s Disease Research Center. She fought this horrible, ugly disease with incredible grace and grit.

Judy's favorite saying was, "Every day is a Gift." In honor of our Judy, let us all work to live intentionally and remember that every day truly is a gift.

Judy is survived by her beloved husband Dave Sjoberg, son Scott Sjoberg (Kami) and daughter Kristen Christian (Matthew); grandchildren David and John Sjoberg and Brian, Kala, Karly and Mac Christian; her siblings Don Hineman (Betsy), Tom Hineman (Jan) and Linda Gallagher (Mike); sweet nieces and nephews; and countless cousins and friends. She is preceded in death by her precious parents, Kalo and Geneva, and her forever best friend, Joan Beindorff.

The family would like to thank all those who played a role in caring for Judy through the years. Those who saw, honored and celebrated HER beyond the disease, especially her Right At Home caregivers Ernestine Lyons and Evelyn Auten, sweet friends Natalie Blackwood and Angie Smith, the many angels who work and serve at Prairie Elder Care, Ascend Hospice, Michelle Niedens with KU Alzheimer’s Disease Research Center and Emily Stirewalt with Church of the Resurrection.

There will be a celebration of life on Tuesday, April 2nd at 1:00 in the Wesley Chapel at Church of the Resurrection in Leawood, KS with a reception to follow. We invite all to wear BLUE to celebrate Judy and her beautiful blue eyes.

She loved being a “coed” as she called it and thrived at KU and the Elementary Education Department. It was her Sophomore year when she went on a blind date. When standing on her date’s fraternity house steps, he introduced her to his Pledge Dad, Dave Sjoberg. When Judy and her date got in his car, Judy couldn’t stop asking about Dave. When Judy’s date got back to his house, his Pledge Dad couldn’t stop asking about Judy. The poor guy finally threw his hands in the air and exclaimed, “Fine! You two can have each other!” It was truly love at first sight.Dave took a job in Denver, CO, so Judy followed the love of her life and finished her college days in Boulder attending the University of Colorado. However, her heart always remained true to the Kansas Jayhawks.Judy and Dave married on May 24, 1964. Judy taught school in Denver and fell in love with teaching fourth grade. She was a conscientious, well-prepared and loving teacher who connected with all her students, especially through creative science experiments. Together Dave and Judy crafted a full and beautiful life in Colorado, always taking advantage of the beauty and glory of the Rocky Mountains.Judy was an extraordinary Mom to her kids, Scott and Kristen. She was the I-am-always-here-for-you-and-I-love-you-oodles-and-gobs kind of Mom. She happily volunteered for any and all activities and made sure that the Sjoberg household was welcoming, full of faith and happiness and that nightly family dinners preceded by prayer were a must. She often stayed up into the wee hours of the night waiting for her teenage kids to arrive home safely. She defined the term unconditional love.The beach was a special place for Judy, with shells being a fascination of hers. Whether on the beach, a mountain hike (with “gorp” for all) or a simple walk in the neighborhood, she could often be found with her head down scanning for nature’s treasures.Judy was a voracious reader and a lifelong student. She prided herself in sliding big and impressive words into her daily talk, leaving all impressed and a few scratching heads. She had an open mind and heart, which made her an exceptionally loving and accepting person with the biggest of hearts. She was always the champion of the underdog in everything. Through the years, many a kid has called “Mama Jude” their second Mom - making her happy beyond belief.After her kids were grown, Judy began a second career in selling computer training, school furniture and A/V equipment. With her people skills, she was a natural at sales.Judy and Dave moved to Kansas City in 2009 to be closer to their kids, six grandkids and "Outlaws." She found “Gramsie” to be her absolute favorite title in life. She loved spending one-on-one time with her “Grands” and was never happier than when the “Dirty Dozen” was together.Together Judy and Dave with their son, Scott, and his wife, Kami, started Right At Home - Kansas City, an in-home care and assistance company in Overland Park, KS. Judy was involved with the business on a daily basis for several years. Right At Home was tailor-made for her; working with seniors to remain in their home and age in place showcased her loving heart and kindness.She was a lover of people of all kinds, the last to leave a party or church. Throughout her life, Judy collected friends just like she collected shells, rocks and one-liners. She loved the color blue, ice cream, being a farm girl, cooking Chinese food, her faith, family, friends, genealogy, jazz music, crossword puzzles, hiking, museums, traveling, reading, butterflies, cats, sleeping in and did we mention people?When Judy was first diagnosed with Alzheimer’s, she was adamant to be a part of the solution and the cure. She participated in several clinical trials with determination and urgency. Having seen her Dad fight the disease, she was fueled by a resolve to learn all she could about prevention and management. She proudly arranged for her brain to be donated to the KU Alzheimer’s Disease Research Center. She fought this horrible, ugly disease with incredible grace and grit.Judy's favorite saying was, "Every day is a Gift." In honor of our Judy, let us all work to live intentionally and remember that every day truly is a gift.Judy is survived by her beloved husband Dave Sjoberg, son Scott Sjoberg (Kami) and daughter Kristen Christian (Matthew); grandchildren David and John Sjoberg and Brian, Kala, Karly and Mac Christian; her siblings Don Hineman (Betsy), Tom Hineman (Jan) and Linda Gallagher (Mike); sweet nieces and nephews; and countless cousins and friends. Jacquelyn Crist Dabney, age 72, passed away Saturday, May 4, 2024. She was born and raised in Garden City, Kansas. She graduated from Holcomb High School in Holcomb, Kansas. She obtained a B.S. in Psychology and M.S. in School/Clinical Psychology from Fort Hays State University in Hays, Kansas. She furthered her education and obtained an MBA from Troy State University.

After working for the Salina and Minneapolis Kansas schools for 7 years, she accepted a job with the Department of Defense Dependent Schools (DoDDS) in Wurzburg, Germany. She continued to work with DoDDS and served as a school psychologist in Alabama, Hawaii, Belgium, Spain, England, and Japan. Jacquelyn was a member of the Association of School Psychologists.

While in DoDDs, she had the opportunity to travel extensively in Europe, Asia, and the Mediterranean. Some of her favorite places to visit were Holland, Garmish, the Great Wall of China, Israel and the Dead Sea. She was an avid traveler and loved nature. Jacquelyn was also a devout Christian and served in prayer ministries throughout her life.

She retired and settled in Florida. After retirement, she started the Freeport Republicans and served as their President.

She is preceded in death by her parents, Leland &amp; Grace Crist of Garden City, KS. She is survived by three brothers and their respected spouses: Johnny (Leveta) Crist in Phoenix, AZ; Dan (Nancy) Crist in Stonewall, CO; Mel (Jane) Crist in Garden City, KS. Jacquelyn is also survived by her daughter/ son-in-law Katrina (Julian) Brown and her grandson, Damien.

A memorial service will be held at the Prairie View Church of the Brethren in Friend, Kansas at 2:00 PM on Saturday, June 8, 2024. This is the church she grew up attending and that her Great Grandfather John Eli Crist founded and pastored. Jacquelyn wished to be cremated, so there will be no viewing. The family will spread her ashes at one of her favorite spots.

Keren Elizabeth (Lowman) Duran, age 83, of Overland Park, KS, died Monday, May 6, 2024, in Overland Park surrounded by her family. She was born October 6, 1940, in Lebo, KS, the daughter of Clyde "Deacon" and Bertha Nadine (Combes) Lowman.

Keren attended elementary and high school in Lebo, KS. She continued her education at the Kansas State Teachers College of Emporia. She was a member of the Sigma Sigma Sigma Sorority. Keren married Robert "Bob" Duran on May 20, 1962, in Lebo, KS. She taught high school English in Dodge City, KS, until 1970 when the family moved to Tipton, MO. In 1972, the family moved to Johnson to begin farming with Bob's father. After her children were all in school, she returned to the classroom, teaching middle school English and Literature in Johnson for 25 years. Bob and Keren lived in Johnson for 48 years until they moved to a retirement community in Lawrence, KS in 2020. After Bob passed in 2021, Keren moved to Overland Park, KS to be closer to her two sons. Keren was a member of St. Bernadette Catholic Church in Johnson, the Altar Society, and the MNO club. She played the organ for church, and she enjoyed reading, quilting, playing cards, spending time at the lake, and taking long trips in the RV.

Keren is survived by her sons, Bob Duran and partner John Humbert of Roeland Park, KS, and Phil Duran and wife Krista of Leawood, KS; daughter, Keri Veach and husband Shae of Hays, KS; sister, Jeanie Facklam and husband Bert of Tescott, KS; brother-in-law, Richard Duran and wife Linda of Horseshoe Bay, TX; sisters-in-law, Anita Antony of Golden, CO, and Rosemary Wilkerson and husband Charlie of Johnson, KS; 11 grandchildren, Kayla Duran Latham, Brock Duran, Jared Duran, Devon Duran, Dani Duran, Dawson Duran, Dina Duran, Kelli Veach, Jodi Veach, Tucker Veach, and Mindi Veach; and ten nieces and nephews.

Keren Elizabeth (Lowman) Duran

Rosalie (Schreiber) Gerstner “Rosalea”, 90, died Monday, May 20, 2024, in Omaha, Neb. She was born June 7, 1933 in Trego County, Kan., to Reinhardt and Kathleen (Kennedy) Schreiber.&nbsp;

As a child, Rosalie loved being outside and spent much of her time helping with farm chores and riding horses. She was involved in 4-H, basketball and cheerleading throughout her childhood, graduating from Ransom High School in 1951.

Rosalie married the love of her life, Joe Gerstner, on Sept. 4, 1951, in Ransom. He preceded her in death on Feb. 26, 2005.&nbsp;

In 1965, the couple moved to Ness City, Kan. with their five children: Connie, Deb, Pat, Mike and Vicki. Rosalie thrived in small town life, dedicating her life to her family and her community. She was instrumental in starting the girls’ softball team in Ness City, coaching for many seasons. She was a fixture at all of their children’s school events and activities. She also volunteered her time as a Cub Scout leader and spent many hours supporting the Ness City Booster Club and Jaycees.

As soon as grandchildren began to arrive, Rosalie dedicated many hours traveling to their games and activities around the area and across the state. Family looked forward to returning to Ness City for huge family gatherings at Mammy and Papa Joe’s home each year.

Together, Rosalie and Joe started several businesses. She was the first woman president of the Kansas Meat Processors Association. Rosalea was also an active member of the Kansas Independent Oil and Gas Association for many years.&nbsp;

Rosalie loved to laugh and organized numerous April Fools’ jokes on her husband during their long marriage. One year, she cut the corners out of the pockets of his pants so his coins would fall out. Another time, she moved and hid their car, then “helped” her husband search for it—laughing herself into tears.&nbsp;

Rosalie was a member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Ness City. She devoted countless hours at the church and Sacred Heart Altar Society, as well as other charities. She strongly believed in serving her Ness City community, volunteering with Meals on Wheels and hospice.&nbsp;

Rosalie was always up for travel and adventures beyond Western Kansas. She rode an ostrich in South Africa and journeyed through Ireland and Italy. For her 80th birthday, Rosalie organized a mystery trip for her entire family—children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren--to Branson, Mo.

In addition to her family, Rosalie’s other great love was Kansas University basketball. In her later years, she would spend winters in Lawrence, Kan., attending Jayhawk men’s and women’s basketball games as well as volleyball games on campus. When not attending sporting events, Rosalie made many friends through Mahjong, Tai Chi and exercise groups.

Regardless of where she was, Rosalie was known to have never met a stranger. She invariably asked people where they were born and raised and was always interested in their replies and stories. Her love of people and her devotion to her family will be greatly missed and always remembered.&nbsp;

She was preceded in death by her husband, Joe; her parents; her brothers: Richard, Louis, and Ken Schreiber; and her sister, Rosemary Schreiber. Also preceding her in death were her dear granddaughter, Tricia (Williams) Whipple; her great-granddaughter, Nicole Whipple; and her son-in-law, Tom Williams; as well as family members: Gene Wierman, Alison Bauer, and Lars Allen.

Rosalie is survived by her children: Connie Williams, Debra (Rick) Stenzel, Patrick (Windy Brookshire) Gerstner, all of Ness City; Michael (Kathy) Gerstner, of Baldwin City, Kan.; and Vicki Gerstner; 14 &nbsp;grandchildren: Kimberly (Williams) Yaeger, Lisa Williams, Elizabeth (Stenzel) Maes, Andrew Stenzel, James Stenzel, Nick Gerstner, Megan (Gerstner) Albers, Brian Gerstner, Catherine Gerstner, Shannon Gerstner, Elizabeth Gerstner, Tori (Wierman) Keller, Stephanie (Wierman) Hines, and Wil Wierman; 29 great-grandchildren; 2 great-great grandsons; one sister, Rita Sekavec; and many nieces and nephews. &nbsp;

Rosalie (Schreiber) Gerstner “Rosalea”

Edward Marvin (Ed) Horton, 86, passed away May 22, 2024, at HaysMed in Hays, KS. He was born July 29, 1937, in Hutchinson, KS, to the late Vernon A., and Clara E. (Moore) Horton.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;He was united in marriage to Sharon L. Byers, on December 6, 1969 in Topeka, KS. A bond that lasted more than 54 years. Sharon affectionately refers to him as her Hunka-Munka Man.

Ed dedicated his life to helping and serving others. Kind and generous, selfless and quick to forgive, he found the silver lining in every situation. Always quick with a smile, Ed will be remembered for his dry wit, groan-inducing puns, and his beloved dad jokes

He was a 1955 graduate of Hutchinson, KS, and also attended Hutchinson Community College. He received his Master’s Degree in Social work from Southwestern College in Winfield, KS. He spent nearly 40 years working for the State of Kansas as a social worker for the Dept. of Social and Rehabilitation Services. Upon retirement, Ed and Sharon purchased an RV and relocated to the Missouri Ozarks to enjoy their later years together.

After retirement, Ed remained active in the community until his final days. He was a longtime member of the Optimist Club in both Hays, and W. Plains. And the Masonic Lodge #195 of Hays, and the Mt. Zion Lodge, in W. Plains. Including serving 1 year as Master Mason at Hays Lodge #195. During the Vietnam War, he served his country as a member of the Kansas Air National Guard, and was a member of American Legion Post 23, W. Plains.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Ed was guided by his faith. Family and friends were most important to him. He embodied the message of Christ in his words and actions. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Hays, and The Bridge Church of W. Plains.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Many summers were spent fishing and camping at the Kraus Family pond, and many state parks throughout Kansas. He became interested in genealogy, spending countless hours extensively researching and cataloguing his family history. As a young man, he played the trombone, and was most fond of Jazz, Big Band, and Classical music.

He is survived by his sweetheart and love of his life, Sharon, Hays; daughter Diana Byers, Clovis, NM; sons Kent (Susan) Willming, Hays, and Michael Horton, Spokane Valley, WA. One grandson, Adam Marrs, Washington, DC.&nbsp;

He was preceded in death by son Joseph Leroy (J.L.) Willming; and his brothers Vernon Horton, Jr., and Michael E. Horton.&nbsp;&nbsp;To honor Ed's life and accomplishments, a memorial open house will be held on June 1st&nbsp;at the First United Methodist Church, 305 W. 7th&nbsp;St., Hays, KS 67601, from 10 AM to 1 PM, to celebrate a life well-lived and to bid farewell to a remarkable individual whose memory will continue to inspire.

(Moore) Horton.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;He was united in marriage to Sharon L. Byers, on December 6, 1969 in Topeka, KS. A bond that lasted more than 54 years. Sharon affectionately refers to him as her Hunka-Munka Man.Ed dedicated his life to helping and serving others. Kind and generous, selfless and quick to forgive, he found the silver lining in every situation. Always quick with a smile, Ed will be remembered for his dry wit, groan-inducing puns, and his beloved dad jokesHe was a 1955 graduate of Hutchinson, KS, and also attended Hutchinson Community College. He received his Master’s Degree in Social work from Southwestern College in Winfield, KS. Edward Marvin (Ed) Horton

Mary E. (Bookless) Tempero was born in Nickerson, Kansas on June 30, 1927 to Ross and Cleo (Vansickle) Bookless. She married Gordon Tempero on December 25, 1948. Mary had graduated from Grace Hospital Nursing School in 1948 and later earned her Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree from Fort Hays State University. Gordon and Mary made their home in Scott City, KS and Mary was the Director of Nursing in the early years of the Scott County Hospital. She then served as the first school nurse for the Scott County schools until her retirement. Mary taught herself to knit and operated a knit shop from her home for many years. She also enjoyed traveling, camping, dancing, quilting and jewelry-making, but especially enjoyed spending time with and caring for her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Upon retirement, Gordon and Mary went on the road full-time and traveled all 50 States and parts of Canada as well as several other countries. Mary loved lighthouses and made extra efforts to visit as many as they could and collected many miniatures of them, amassing quite a collection. When it was time to re-establish roots, they settled in Aldersgate Retirement Community in Topeka, KS.

Mary passed peacefully into eternal life surrounded by her family on May 19, 2024 at Aldersgate Village.

She is survived by her son Preston (Libby)Tempero of Liberty, MO, her daughter Beth (Eugene)Fisher of Hays, KS, her grandchildren Amanda Fisher Lange (fiancé, Ben Koekemoer), Rebecca (Kevin)Holsch, and Alison Tempero (fiance’, Adrian Sinclair), her great grandchildren Hannah Johnston, Austin Lange, Clark and Vance Rosenbarger, Alahna and Ashtyn Holsch, and her great-great granddaughter, Berkley Johnston.

Mary was preceded in death by her parents, husband, brothers Eugene, Eldon, and Harry Bookless, her sister, Carol Switzer, and sister-in-law, Patricia Bookless.

Services will be at First United Methodist Church in Topeka, Kansas (600 SW Topeka Blvd.) at 10:00 am on June 1, 2024. There will be visitation with friends and family at 9:30 am at the church. The memorial service will be live-streamed at: http://www.forthegoodofthecity.org/podcasts/media

Peggy D. (Long) Carman passed away peacefully Monday, May 20, 2024, at her home in Hoxie. Peggy was born in Dresden, Kansas, to Thomas Bryan (Red) Long and Leta P. (Jones) Long. She grew up in Dresden and later Oberlin, Kansas, the third of ten children, graduating from Decatur Community High School with the Class of 1953.

On February 14, 1953, she was united in marriage to Willis B. Carman in Oberlin. Six children were born to this union. They made their home in Oberlin until they moved to Hoxie when they took over the Carman family farm in 1971.

Peggy was a wonderful cook, specializing in fried chicken, homemade noodles, and chocolate chip cookies. She was an excellent seamstress, quilter, and caregiver. She is survived by her daughters, Diana (Larry) Alstrom of Overland Park; Deb (Tom) Campbell of Hoxie; Cindy (Charlie) Ostmeyer of Milford; Anne (Richard) Heskett, Manhattan; and Jodee Carman (Steve Ferland), Ellis; a brother Greg Long, Scott City; sisters Judy (Evan) Goltl, Hill City, and Joy Richardson, Belgrade, Montana.

She is also survived by 15 grandchildren, Clay Alstrom (Kristina); Angie (Bryan) Long, Jamie (Nick) Bolton; Carrie (Steve) Meier; Holly (Greg) Horning, Josh Campbell (Alicia); Lindsay (Adam) Koster; Adam (Anne Marie) Ostmeyer; Emily (Brady) Nelson; Troy (Kori) Ostmeyer; Ashley (Andy) Bowers; Chelsea Heskett; Riley (Abby) Heskett; Mackenzie (Ryan) Blecha; Cash Stillman; and 26 great grandchildren: Evann, Max, Luke, Kendall, Carsyn, Cooper, Beau, Henley Jo, Morgan, Taryn, Avery, Caleb, Jace, Townes, Maggie, Haley, Eli, Grace, Hazel, Rowdy, Margo, Madelyn, Isaac, Sophie, Gentry and Charlie Jo. She is also survived by brother-in-law Garry Beeson and former son-in-law Karl Stillman and many nieces and nephews.

Peggy was preceded in death by her husband, Willis; son, Phyll Carman; brothers Gale, G.B., Gene and Gary Long and sisters, Patty Moore and Vicky Beeson.

Peggy was a constant source of support for her family. The pride she had for her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren was unsurpassed. Her joy and undying love for her family will be in our hearts forever. We love you, Mom!

Larry Lee Michel, age 84, passed away at Prairie Senior in Colby, KS, May 21, 2024. He was born on April 1, 1940, in LaCrosse, KS.

Larry married Donna Schuler, in Ness City, KS, on August 3, 1958. To that union they had two daughters, Genelda and Lora. He was a lifelong mechanic. He will be remembered for his love for John Deere and that he could fix anything.

Larry was preceded in death by his parents, Walter and Fern Michel, daughter Lora Alexander, and brother Dennis Michel.

As you can see by his birthdate, April Fool’s Day, he was ornery. He had a great smile and infectious laugh. He really loved his time living in Wisconsin, also known as “God’s country,” to him. While living there he worked for Cifaldi Ford. He kept up to date on all his schooling by going to the Twin Cities for classes. The grandsons would come visit in the summer and he would get a kick out of their antics and sometimes join them. His grandsons enjoyed fishing with him in the evenings.

Larry is survived by his wife of 65 years, Donna of Brewster, KS; daughter Genelda Michel of Ness City, KS; two grandsons and seven great-grandchildren.

A memorial service to celebrate his life will be held at a later date. Sondra Jo Murphy, beloved wife, mother, and dedicated social worker, passed away peacefully on May 20, 2024, at the age of 85. Her life was filled with the unconditional love she gave and received from her family, friends, and cherished canine companions.

Born on October 16, 1939, in Beloit, KS to Joseph and Gladys (Slater) Cunningham. Sondra was the eldest of two children. From a young age, she exhibited a profound sense of empathy and a desire to make a difference in the lives of those around her. This calling led her to pursue a degree in social work at Fort Hays State University, where she excelled academically and found her true vocation.

Sondra married the love of her life, Earl Keith Murphy. Together, they built a home filled with love and laughter. Their marriage was a partnership built on mutual respect, shared dreams, and deep affection. Together, they raised two wonderful children, Michael and Melissa, who were the pride and joy of Sondra's life. She instilled in them the values of kindness, perseverance, and the importance of service to others.

She is preceded in death by her parents, brother Stephen Cunningham, husband Earl “Keith” Murphy and daughter Melissa Murphy.
