James Wayne Richardson, 84, passed away on October 26, 2022, at his 
home in Great Bend, Kan. He was born on August 30, 1938, in Stafford, 
Kan., to Everett and Irene (Bates) Richardson. On October 09, 1960, he 
married Carolyn Allison in Stafford, Kan. She survives.

Coming from Colorado Springs, Colo., James was a Great Bend resident 
for the past 7 years. He was a man of great faith – being a member of 
many churches during his time in Colorado, including Security Christian 
and United Methodist Church – and spread that faith through his work in 
different church leadership roles through the years as well as doing 
outreach and prison ministry through Kairos for over 20 years. James was
 also a life-long racer, having been part of the start of the SRCA 
dragstrip and its maintenance, enjoying circle track racing, and racing 
at Pikes Peak Hill Climb. He was also a dedicated Boy Scout in his 
childhood, later serving as a Boy Scout leader for some of his sons.

Survivors include his wife of the home; three sons, J.D. Richardson 
of Great Bend, Kan., Bradley (Sandra) Richardson of Peyton, Colo., and 
Marc Richardson of Great Bend, Kan.; five grandchildren, Heather Werner,
 Savannah Richardson, Devian McDowell, Dorian McDowell, and Darisha 
McDowell; and four great-grandchildren, Brittany and Gage Werner, and 
Mia and Dominic McDowell. He was preceded in death by his parents and a 
sister, Bonnie Gittins.

Visitation will take place from Noon to 8:00 p.m. on Tuesday, 
November 1, 2022, at Bryant Funeral Home, with family receiving guests 
from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Funeral service will take place at 10:00 
a.m. on Wednesday, November 2, 2022, at Encounter Church, with Pastor 
Jake Newman presiding. Interment will follow at Stafford Cemetery. 


Memorials have been designated to the Stafford County Museum, SRCA 
Dragstrip, or Kairos Prison Ministry, in care of Bryant Funeral Home.

Billie Jo Breit

Alfred Heustis, 77, died October 25, 2022, at his home in rural 
Russell, Kansas. He was born June 22, 1945, in Tampa, Florida, the son 
of Alfred W. Heustis Sr. and Clyde (Ward) Heustis.&nbsp; Al graduated from 
Plant High School in Tampa, Florida and then served in the United States
 Army during the Vietnam War.

On December 23, 1965, he married Rose Harrell at Fort Sill, Oklahoma. Together they raised five children.

Al worked for 23 years for the Hensel Phelps Construction Company in 
Greeley, Colorado. In 2009 he retired and moved to Kansas. He was a 
member of St. Ann’s Catholic Church, Olmitz, Kansas.

He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Rose Heustis of the home; 
five children, Irene Moore of Omaha, Nebraska, Tonya Schneck of Lebanon,
 Pennsylvania, Alfred Heustis III of Russell, Phillip Heustis of 
Winchester, Virginia, and Christopher Heustis of Warrenton, Virginia; 14
 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren.

Services will be Monday, October 31, 2022, at St. Ann’s Catholic 
Church, Olmitz, Kansas, with family to greet friends at the church at 
1:00 p.m., and Rosary to follow at 1:30 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial 
will begin at 2 p.m., celebrated by Father Anselm Eke, MSP. Burial will 
follow in St. Ann Cemetery.

Logan resident Robert Becker passed away Oct. 25 at the Salina Regional Health Center in Salina, KS at the age of 86.

He was born on November 14, 1935, near Logan, the son of Rodney and Mary (Jaenicke) Becker.&nbsp;

Survivors include his son Gary Becker and wife Sandy of Logan, 
daughters Becky Torres and husband Scott of Minneapolis, Laquita Becker 
of Hays, and sister-in-law Darlene Becker of Logan; 7 grandchildren; and
 14 great grandchildren.

Robert was preceded in death by his wife Mary, parents Rodney and Lucille, brothers, Jerome, Paul, Ronald, and Cliff Becker.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held Saturday, October 29, 2022, at 
10:00 a.m. in the St. John Catholic Church, Logan, with Father John 
Schmeidler and Father Daryl Olmstead officiating.&nbsp; The services will be 
streamed live on the Olliff-Boeve Memorial Chapel FaceBook page.&nbsp; 
Following the service, Robert will be laid to rest in the Pleasant View 
Cemetery, Logan, with military honors.

Robert will lie in-state 5:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. Thursday, and 12:00

Robert Valentine Becker

Jimmy Lee Smith (known to most as Smitty) departed this life on October 
12th. 2022. The last few months of his life he had been living at The 
Soldier's Home at Fort Dodge. 
Jimmy was born May 8th, 1947, in Oakley, Logan County, Kansas. His parents
 were John Author Smith and Mary Marvel Nancy Bloom. Jimmy had no 
siblings and he never married. 
He was drafted into the U.S. Army in 1968, serving 14 months in Korea with the 122nd Signal Battalion, 2nd Infantry Division. 
In 1974, he received a Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) degree from Kansas 
state University (a dual major in painting and printmaking). Most of 
his life was involved with the production of Commercial and Graphic Art.
 In 1971, he started his own business in Oakley, painting signs and 
lettering truck doors, decorating race cars, silk screen painting 
T-shirts, hats, decals, real estate signs, designing logos for 
businesses; and spray painting custom automobiles and motorcycles. 
His lifelong hobby was music and at one time he had a dance band. There 
will be a graveside service held on Friday, Nov. 4th, 2022, at 10:30 am in
 the Oakley City Cemetery with Pastor Kyle Bloom, a second cousin of 
Jimmy's, officiating. His ashes will be buried beside his parents. If 
any wish to give a memorial the family suggests a gift to the VFW in 
Oakley, KS. It can be mailed to, VFW , P.O.Box 128, Oakley, KS. 67748

Jimmy Lee 'Smitty' Smith

Ruth Ann Hickok, 95, of Ulysses, Ks went to be with her Lord and Savior 
Jesus Christ on Monday, October 24th, 2022, at Western Prairie Senior 
Living in Ulysses. 
She was born on October 9th, 1927, in Logan, Kansas, to Thomas Lloyd and 
Wilma Frances (Clark) Reese. Ruth Ann spent her first years in Logan, Ks
 where she attended Logan Grade School and graduated from Logan High 
School. After graduation, she attended Colorado Women’s College and 
Colorado University. While in college she met the love of her life, Don.
 She married Donald Ulysses Hickok on June 14th, 1948 at the First 
Christian Church in Logan, Ks. They moved to Ulysses right after getting
 married. She taught 2nd and 3rd grade at Ulysses Grade School from 1951
 to 1958. She and Don owned and operated the local Gamble’s store later 
called Hickok Home Center where she met and helped many people in 
Ulysses and the surrounding communities for 34 years until they closed 
in 1992. During their time running the store, they had many opportunities
 to travel the world, through the companies they worked with. She 
collected many treasures from their trips. 
Ruth Ann was a loving wife, mom, grammy, aunt, and friend to many. She 
enjoyed growing and caring for her roses and sharing beautiful 
arrangements she made with others. She loved her family dearly, enjoying
 their company, and loved taking lots of pictures, putting them in 
albums to document the many wonderful moments. She also enjoyed 
knitting, cross stitch, puzzles, and playing games with family and 
friends. She and Don spent many summers at their cabin in Cuchara, Co, 
where she enjoyed taking walks and watching the hummingbirds. Ruth Ann 
was a member of the First United Methodist Church, United Methodist 
Women, United Methodist Choir and Bells, Eastern Star, American Legion 
Auxiliary, PEO, Jr. Civic, Bob Wilson Memorial Hospital Auxiliary, Book 
&amp; Music Club, various bridge clubs, and her special UNO club. 
Ruth Ann is survived by her loving Husband of 74 years, Don; Daughter, 
Susan Goulding and husband John of Prairie Village, Ks; Son, Bill Hickok
 and wife Bobbi Jo of Ulysses, Ks. Grandchildren, Alisha Hickok of 
Wichita Ks; Nolan Hickok and wife Jamie of Wichita, Ks; Lauren Carolan 
of Prairie Village, Ks; Spencer Goulding of Murphy, Or; Joshua Hickok of
 Ulysses, Ks, Kyle Hickok and fiancée Cassidy of Ulysses, Ks; Reese 
Goulding of Oklahoma City, Ok; Brooke Perez and husband Tanner of 
Ulysses, Ks. Great-Grandchildren Emma Carolan and Brecklyn Perez; and 
numerous special nieces and nephews.

Dolores was born September 19, 1928, in Rural Sherman County, Kansas 
to Jacob and Anna (Zimbelman) Peter.&nbsp; She was one of 13 children. She 
grew up around the Goodland area and graduated from Sherman County High 
School in 1946.&nbsp;

On June 23, 1951, she married Henry “Hank” Elliott in Clarksville, TN. They had one daughter, Susan.

Hank and Dolores made their home in Goodland. Dolores worked as a bookkeeper for 35 years, retiring in 1991.

Preceding her in death were her parents, her husband Hank, her 
brothers Phillip, Edwin, Harold “Pete”, Armen and Larry, and sisters 
Ida, Vera, Clara, Elizabeth (Betty), Esther, Thelma and Loretta.

She is survived by her daughter Susan (Alan) Stasser of Kingfisher, 
OK, 4 sisters-in-law Bernice Peter, Finger, TN, Betty Wright of 
Goodland, Esther Elliott and Eleanor Elliott of Edson, KS. She is 
survived by 4 granddaughters; Talia Stasser of Curtis, NE, Autumn and 
Lisha Stasser of Kingfisher, OK, and Lindsey (Norman) Imes of 
Kingfisher, OK, and 5 great grandsons; Kolin and Tyce Pate of Curtis, 
NE, Jaxxyn Stasser, Liam and Cole Henry Imes all of Kingfisher, OK.&nbsp;

Phillipsburg resident David O. Baumgartner was born on January 17, 
1950, in Russell, KS and passed away on Monday, October 24, 2022, at the 
Kansas Soldiers’ Home at Fort Dodge, KS.&nbsp; He was 72.

Survivors include his wife Jackie of Phillipsburg; son James 
Baumgartner and wife Amber of Las Vegas, NV; daughters Mandra Imm of 
Phillipsburg and Meg Rau and husband Jeff of Long Beach, CA; brothers 
Tony Clements and Wes Clements of Denver, CO; 10 grandchildren; and 1 
great grandchild.

Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Friday, October 28, 2022, in the

Gloria Ann Heikes

Larry M. Cox, 63, of Ellis, passed away on Saturday evening, Oct. 22, 2022, at Hays Medical Center. Larry was born to Verle and Dorothy (Dechant) Cox on May 5, 1959. He grew up in Grainfield and graduated from Wheatland High School with the Class of 1977. He married his high school sweetheart, Lisa Kinderknecht on Oct. 16, 1982, in Park, Kan. To this union, they were blessed with two children.

After high school, Larry worked with a construction crew burying telephone cables. He moved back home to get married and began work at Wolf Memorial Co. in Ellis, fabricating and setting monuments.

As a hobby, he did wood crafts. Later he took a job with The Reactor, Inc. out of Quinter. While traveling the highways with this mobile reactor unit, mixing liquid fertilizer, he enjoyed seeing new sites, making many friends and trying all of the local’s favorite cafés and restaurants. In a roundabout way, he created his own version of "Diners, Drive-ins, and Dives"; one of his favorite shows. When the kids would ask for directions to a destination, he would most often have a “shortcut” route. Larry was very proud to be a volunteer on the City of Ellis Fire Department for 26 years.

He was very proud of his children and enjoyed supporting them in their activities and adventures. He attended all of Emily’s vocal and band concerts and was Ethan’s pit crew chief at the go-kart races. His greatest joy was being a grandpa to his three grandchildren. There was always time for piggyback rides, putting puzzles together, playing outside in the dirt, or baking a sweet treat in the kitchen. And always in his pocket, a candy reward for a high five.

Larry is survived by his wife Lisa of the home; daughter, Emily Mattheyer and husband Jordan; son, Ethan Cox and wife Britny; grandchildren Mason and Ava Mattheyer and Mallory Cox, all of Ellis; brother Terry Cox and Mary Tuttle of Park, Kan.; sister DeeAnn Seelbach and husband Richard of Topeka; niece, Randee and nephews, Tyler, Dwayne, and DeeJay; mother-in-law, Virginia Kinderknecht; extended family and many friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, grandparents, father-in-law, Robert Kinderknecht, and nephew, Lloyd Tuttle.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10 a.m. Friday, Oct. 28, 2022, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Ellis. Burial will follow the service in St. Mary’s Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 5:30 to 7 p.m.  Thursday, Oct. 27, 2022, at St. Mary’s Church in Ellis. A combined Rosary and Parish Vigil service will be at 7 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials made to St. Mary’s School or Sheridan County Benefit Walk, or to be used according to the wishes of the family.

Larry Cox

Mary Catherine Malek was born on Nov. 6, 1925, to Marguerite 
(Carl) and Valentine Malek at Cawker City. She left this life 
peacefully in Russell, on Sept. 14, 2022, at the age of 96. 

Mary 
grew up in the Malek bakery run by her parents along with her siblings, 
sister Louise and brothers Carl, Leo and Ted. She received her 
education at St. Theresa Academy and Cawker City High School. 

Her 
father, Valentine, died in November 1942. Mary and her mother moved to 
California to be near their family. She graduated with the Class of 
1943 at Pomona Valley High School. Mary returned to Kansas and with 
close friends from high school ventured into the working world in Iowa. 


On one bus ride from Kansas to Madison, Iowa, she met Nolan Lucas.&nbsp; True 
love prevailed and they were married on May 14, 1946, in Peoria, 
Ill.&nbsp; They resided in St. Joseph, Mo., for several years then moved 
to Kansas City, Kan. 

Near their retirement years, they moved to Mission,
 Kan. They were blessed to be married 44 years. They received the 
Blessed Sacrament of Matrimony in the Catholic Church on Sept. 7, 
1986.

They enjoyed visiting family and traveling throughout the world. 
Beaches were her favorite. Nolan died in 1990 of cancer.&nbsp; Mary went on 
to meeting another companion in her life and she and Dudley Potter 
enjoyed traveling, camping and friends for 29 years. When Mary’s health
 began failing, she moved to Russell to be near her niece Carleen. She 
was able to enjoy several trips to her hometown of Cawker City.

Mary spent most of her career working at Midwest Research Institute. 
It was a high-security research facility for the government. She was 
printing department manager and retired with over 30 years.

She enjoyed 
many close friendships with fellow workers and continued to stay in 
touch with them well after retirement. She was a loyal friend to many.&nbsp;
 Mary enjoyed sports especially football as she always said she grew up 
watching her brothers play football.

Until arthritis took a toll on her 
fingers, she was an avid crochet fan. She enjoyed reading – always a 
book in her hand, listening to music and spending time by the pool. And
 could she shop – loved to shop and for many years she could outwalk her
 nieces at the malls. And she always had her lipstick on.

One of the 
most important tasks in her life was having her hair done weekly.&nbsp; She 
was blessed to have the same hairdresser, Debbie, for over 40 years.&nbsp; 
Even in her last days of illness, her question would be “What about my 
hair?” And of course, no one could replace Debbie.

Mary loved her family dearly and family times together.

Even though no children were born to Nolan and her, they dearly loved
 the Malek and Lucas nieces, nephews and their families. Mary had three generations of great-nieces and nephews. &nbsp;Mary had many happy memories 
of the Lucas family and Macon County, Mo., where Nolan was raised.&nbsp; Mary 
spent many vacations in California to see her siblings and their 
children. &nbsp;Mary also enjoyed a close relationship with many Carl 
cousins. Growing up, they spent Sundays together when the large 
families would meet for Sunday dinner and fun. Throughout the years, 
she would meet and correspond with her cousins. Sadly, just a few 
remain, but she still tried to keep in touch with Jo Hadley and Loretta 
Brand along with cousin-in-law Mary (Mike) Baier.

Mary is preceded in death by her husband Nolan, parents, Maggie and 
Val Malek, siblings Louise (Andy-deceased) Anderson, Carl, Bub and Ted 
Malek. Also nieces and nephews, &nbsp;Eddie and Ricky (Laura) Malek, Peggy 
(Leo-deceased) DeZoete, Patty Malek, Cathy Malek and Virgil 
(Pauline-deceased) Lucas along with his children Deborah, Karen, Sam, 
Phillip and many dear cousins and friends.

Left to cherish her memory are nieces Carleen (Andy) Gilmore, Diane 
(Dan) Peterson, Linda (Mike-deceased) Palmer, Leslie (Claudio) Pasian,&nbsp; 
and nephews Roger (Janet) Lucas, Mike (Sue) Lucas, James Lucas and 
Michael Malek, &nbsp;special sister-in-law Mary (Harry-deceased) White and three generations of great-nieces and nephews along with special &nbsp;friends, 
Debbie Vunovich, Glenda VanNess and Joan Boyd.

Mary’s wishes were no service and cremation. Interment will be next to Nolan at Resurrection Catholic Cemetery, Lenexa.

Mary Catherine Malek Lucas

Samuel Louis Brock, 79, of Russell, passed away after a 
courageous battle with cancer on Tuesday, Oct. 25, 2022, at his home 
with his loved ones by his side.

Sam was born Sept. 27, 1943, in Sabetha. He was one of 
three sons born to Dale A., Sr., and Lucille N. (Spiker) Brock.&nbsp; He grew
 up in Sabetha and graduated from Sabetha High School in the Class of 
61.&nbsp; He then attended Emporia State University where he obtained his 
degree in business and accounting.&nbsp; He also served his country in the 
Army National Guard.

Sam was united in marriage to Marcia McCuistion on June 4, 1966.&nbsp; 
This union was blessed with two daughters; Sonya and Stephanie. Later 
he was united in marriage to Lana (Teel) Foster on July 10, 1998. They 
made their home in Russell.

Sam was a co-owner of Morris &amp; Brock Accounting, which later 
became Gudenkauf, Malone &amp; Brock, Inc. He retired in 2014. He was 
an active member of the Russell Elks Lodge # 1715. He enjoyed all 
aspects of sports, fishing, following his family’s activities and 
spending time at his cabin at the lake.

Sam’s surviving family includes his wife of 24 years, Lana of the 
home; daughters, Sonya Schinkel of Lawrence and Stephanie Dunn 
(Chris) of Lenexa; step-sons, Douglas Foster (Bonnie) of 
Wichita and David Foster (Summer) of Alva, Okla.; brothers, 
Dale Brock (Esther) of Spiceland, Ind., and Dennis Brock (Carol) of 
Reading, Kan.; and seven grandchildren, Jane, Peter, Neva, Merle, 
Sydney, Beau and Mary Kate. Sam was preceded in death by his parents.

Celebration of life services will be at the Russell Elks Lodge 
#1715 at a later date.&nbsp; Condolences may be sent to Pohlman-Varner-Peeler
 Mortuary, which is in charge of these arrangements.

three sons born to Dale A., Sr., and Lucille N. (Spiker) Brock.&nbsp; He grew
 up in Sabetha and graduated from Sabetha High School in the Class of 
61.&nbsp; He then attended Emporia State University where he obtained his 
degree in business and accounting.&nbsp; He also served his country in the 
Army National Guard.Sam was united in marriage to Marcia McCuistion on June 4, 1966.&nbsp; 
This union was blessed with two daughters; Sonya and Stephanie. Later 
he was united in marriage to Lana (Teel) Foster on July 10, 1998. They 
made their home in Russell.Sam was a co-owner of Morris &amp; Brock Accounting, which later 
became Gudenkauf, Malone &amp; Brock, Inc. He retired in 2014. He was 
an active member of the Russell Elks Lodge # 1715. He enjoyed all 
aspects of sports, fishing, following his family’s activities and 
spending time at his cabin at the lake.Sam’s surviving family includes his wife of 24 years, Lana of the 
home; daughters, Sonya Schinkel of Lawrence and Stephanie Dunn 
(Chris) of Lenexa; step-sons, Douglas Foster (Bonnie) of 
Wichita and David Foster (Summer) of Alva, Okla.; brothers, 
Dale Brock (Esther) of Spiceland, Ind., and Dennis Brock (Carol) of 
Reading, Kan.; and seven grandchildren, Jane, Peter, Neva, Merle, 
Sydney, Beau and Mary Kate. Sam was preceded in death by his parents.Celebration of life services will be at the Russell Elks Lodge 
#1715 at a later date.&nbsp; Condolences may be sent to Pohlman-Varner-Peeler

Samuel Louis Brock

Robert Dale Schmitt, 82, of Gorham, passed away Tuesday, Oct. 25, 2022, at the Russell Regional Hospital in Russell.

Bob was born May 26, 1940, in Hays. He was the son of Gustav 
A. and Lydia (Wagner) Schmitt.&nbsp; At the age of 2, his family moved to 
the family farm south of Gorham, which was homesteaded in 1888. He 
graduated from Gorham High School in the Class of 1958.

Bob was united in marriage to Lyla L. Prater on Oct. 15, 1961, in 
Russell.&nbsp; They made their home on the family farm and were blessed with 
three children; Virginia, Dale and Kristin.

Bob was a farmer and rancher on the farm south of Gorham. He spent 
the next 80 years doing what he loved; farming, ranching, butchering and
 passing down family traditions.

He took great pride in being the third
 generation to live on the family farm. He was the youngest of 32 first 
cousins on the Schmitt side. He enjoyed visiting with everyone and 
sharing life lessons with the younger generations. He loved his food, he
 couldn’t have a meal without meat and dessert! Some of his favorite 
places to eat were Red Lobster and Dairy Queen.

He was a life member of St. John Lutheran Church. He also belonged 
to the Big Creek 4-H Club, the Cushman Motor Scooters Association and 
hosted a couple of Cushman gatherings at the farm. He served on the 
Federal Grand Jury and the Big Creek Township Board. He loved spending 
time with his family and following his grandchildren’s activities, 
pestering his friends and family, caring for his 1974 T-Bird and eating 
ice cream and popcorn.

Bob’s surviving family includes his wife of 61 years, Lyla of the 
home; daughters, Virginia Rohleder of Gorham and Kristin Bay 
(Tony) of Russell; son, Dale Schmitt (Nancy) of Russell;
 eight grandchildren, Colby Rohleder (Ashley), Sadee Soldan (Rex), 
Brandon Schmitt, Mason Schmitt, Kendra Bay, Tytin Bay, Alex Underwood 
and Seth Underwood. Four great-grandchildren, Colt and Owen Soldan, Otto
 and Tinzlee Rohleder; sister-in-law Carol Walford and his only niece 
Stacy Waters (Paul) and her family.

Bob was preceded in death by his parents; son-in-law, Randy Rohleder; and brother-in-law, Larry Walford.

Celebration of Bob’s life will be at 11 a.m. Friday, Oct. 
28, 2022, at St. John Lutheran Church.&nbsp; A private burial of ashes will 
follow at a later date. The family will be present to greet friends at 
9:30 a.m. Friday at the church.

A memorial has been established with the
 Gorham Senior Center.&nbsp; Contributions and condolences may be sent to

Robert Dale Schmitt

Connie Darlene Weaver, 
was born on August 29, 1936, to Harry and Viola (Hoar) Baker in Stockton,
 Kansas. She passed away on Friday, October 14, 2022, at St. Francis 
Hospital in Colorado Springs.

In
 1954, Connie graduated from Logan High School in Logan, Kansas. In 
1955, she attended Parks Business School in Denver, Colorado and was 
baptized in the Park Hill Baptist Church. While attending church, Connie
 met the love of her life, Fred Joseph Weaver. At the time, he was in 
the United States Air Force. They were married from August 22, 1956, until his passing in 1988. To this union, two children were born: Terry 
Eugene in 1958 and Linda Ann in 1962.

Connie
 worked for Aurora Public Schools in Aurora, Colorado, from 1969 to 1977.
 In 1978 the family moved to Calhan, Colorado where Connie became 
employed by Falcon School District #49 until her retirement in 1999. She
 continued to reside in Calhan until her passing.

Connie
 and Fred enjoyed life and all the people they met along the way. They 
spent many years mentoring young people through 4H (horses, pigs and 
dogs), horse racing (Mr. Astonisher), and traveling (the Kentucky Derby 
was a special trip). In recent years, Connie found joy in Red Hats, 
Silver Sneakers, senior luncheons, family gatherings and her companion 
poodle, Tony. She also took great comfort in the lord and the words of 
the Bible.

On a pad by her phone, Connie had written, “just another journey” and “God Bless” - few words with great meaning.

Connie
 is survived by brother, Darrell Baker of Logan, Kansas; son, Terry 
(Mimi) Weaver of Haxtun, Colorado; daughter, Linda (Darren) Webb of 
Cheyenne, Wyoming; grandaughter, Lynette Salway of Cheyenne, Wyoming; 
Colleen Weaver of Haxtun, Colorado; grandson, Jake (Krista) Webb of 
Cheyenne, Wyoming; and great grandchildren, Hale Salway, Chayton Salway,
 Creed Salway, Logan Webb, Adelynn Webb, all of Cheyenne, Wyoming. She 
also leaves behind many family members in Kansas.

Connie
 was preceded in death by her parents, Harry and Viola Baker; husband, 
Fred Joseph Weaver; and sister-in-laws, Carlyn Baker and Carol Ediger.

A
 memorial Service will be help at 10:30 AM, Thursday, November 3, 2022, 
&nbsp;at the Living World Community Church, 532 Colorado Avenue, Calhan, 
Colorado 80808, with Pastor Rick Cofer officiating.

A second memorial 
service will be held on Saturday, November 5, 2022, at 10:30 a.m. in the
 Logan Funeral Home in Logan, Kansas, with Pastor Troy Buss officiating.

Connie’s final resting place will be at Pleasant View Cemetery outside Logan, Kansas.

Connie Darlene Weaver

Jane Rae Pfannenstiel, 87, Hays, left 
this world to be with her Lord Jesus Christ, with her loving family at 
her side on Friday, October 21, 2022

She was born January 9, 1935, in Damar 
the daughter of Emile and Evelyn (Newell) Tremblay.&nbsp; Upon graduation, 
she moved to Hays, where she would meet her future husband, Marvin 
Francis Pfannenstiel.&nbsp; They would celebrate their love for each other in
 the Catholic Church and in front of their families as they united in 
marriage on October 22, 1955.&nbsp; Before Marvin’s passing in 2019, they 
celebrated their 64th wedding anniversary.&nbsp; In their marriage, five 
children were born: Cindy, Carmen, Danny, Lisa, and Tim.

Jane was a faithful follower of Jesus 
Christ, the attribute she would hope to be remembered by.&nbsp; She dedicated
 her life to sharing the love and peace of Jesus.&nbsp; She would often ask, 
“How is your walk with the Lord?”&nbsp; She faithfully served by her husband 
Marvin in the food and hospitality business, something that was more of a
 lifestyle to her than work.&nbsp; For ten years, she was employed at 
HaysMed, working as a Med CNA.&nbsp; She enjoyed nothing more than being 
surrounded by her family, often in an overcrowded house that was 20 
degrees warmer than it should be.&nbsp; She was a shark at the card table, 
not afraid to cut a rug at a wedding reception, and was a Patriot that 
believed in our country and the principles it was built on.&nbsp; Jane was 
very proud to be an American.&nbsp; Her humor was unique and still makes us 
laugh today.&nbsp; Jane had an incredible way of making you feel 
uncomfortable by asking profoundly direct questions, but somehow making 
you feel more welcome than you can imagine.&nbsp; She resembled the one she 
followed.&nbsp; Jane will be missed but equally remembered as her spirit 
lives on in each of those who were blessed to know her.

 You have been faithful over a little; I will set you over much.&nbsp; Enter 
into the joy of your master.”&nbsp; - Matthew 25:23

Survivors include her children: Cindy

Norton, Lisa Donovan and husband David of Norton, and Tim Pfannenstiel 
of Hays, daughters-in-law: Connie Pfannenstiel and Susie Pfannenstiel, 
two brothers: Jerome Tremblay and wife Charlotte of Hermiston, OR and 
Douglas Tremblay and wife Jenny of Gypsum, CO, two sisters: Dianne 
Leiker of Hays and Dorothy Barnett and husband Ivan of Topeka, 18 
grandchildren, 32 great grandchildren and one on the way, and numerous 
nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Marvin, two brothers: Leo and Leodore Tremblay and a sister: Leola Kerr.

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 
10:00 am on Friday, October 28, 2022, at Immaculate Heart of Mary 
Catholic Church with Fr. Nick Parker officiating.&nbsp; Burial will follow in
 the Kansas Veterans' Cemetery, WaKeeney.&nbsp; Visitation will be from 6:00 
pm until 8:00 on Thursday and from 9:00 am until 9:45 on Friday, all at 
Hays Memorial Chapel Funeral Home.&nbsp; A vigil service and rosary will be 
at 6:30 pm on Thursday at the funeral home.&nbsp;

Jane Rae Pfannenstiel

Larry L. Johnson, 84, of Jennings, KS, passed away October 23, 2022,&nbsp; at Colby Health and Rehab. He was born December 13, 1937, to Lionel 
“Lonnie” and Frances (Strom) Johnson in McPherson, KS.

Larry grew 
up around Lindsborg, KS. He graduated from Assaria High School and went 
on to attend Bethany College and received his master’s degree from 
Emporia State University. He taught in Roxbury and Mitchell (Sterling 
School District) before moving to Johnson City, KS where he was the 
elementary school principal. Larry married Glenda S. Kamstra on March 
20, 1981, in Johnson City, KS. They moved to Jennings, KS in the ‘90s 
where he was the Superintendent until his retirement. After he retired, 
Larry worked for the Kansas Wildlife and Parks doing surveys at the 
Sebelius Lake in Norton. He really enjoyed getting to learn about the 
different birds and other wildlife in the area. Larry loved supporting 
Glenda and her ministry. He enjoyed woodcarving and was an avid reader 
and fisherman in his spare time. Larry loved growing begonias; he even 
kept them inside during the winter. He and his siblings learned how to 
garden from their father.

Larry was preceded in death by his 
parents and wife, Glenda. He is survived by his children: Brandon 
(Mallory) Johnson of Bremerton, WA, David Johnson of Goodland, KS, and 
Terresa (Roy) Bruning of Atwood, KS; brother, Dennis (Rhonda) Johnson of
 Moundridge, KS; sister, Janice Johnson of Topeka, KS; numerous 
grandchildren and great grandchildren and many other family and friends.

Graveside
 inurnment will be held 11:00 am Tuesday, November 1, 2022, at the

Larry L. Johnson

Verna Jean (Morris) Radcliffe, 92, the third child of Robert and 
Helen (Siegrist) Morris, was born June 20, 1930, in Rural Graham County,
 Kansas, and passed away Saturday, October 23, 2022, at Dawson Place in 
Hill City, Kansas.

Verna Jean attended grade school and high 
school in Hill City, was the Homecoming Queen, graduating in the Class 
of 1948.  June 27, 1948, Verna Jean was united in marriage to R. Duane 
Radcliffe at the Hill City Christian Church. To this union four children
 were born:  Ronald Duane, Diana Jean, Larry Eugene, and Brenda Ellen. 
Verna Jean was baptized and remained a faithful member of the Christian 
Church.

Life at the Radcliffe home was never dull. Their four 
children kept them busy with not only school activities, but 
extra-curricular events as well.  Among other things, Verna Jean and 
Duane sponsored ski trips driving their customized van. Of course, many 
of the teenagers wanted to ride in their vehicle!

Verna Jean was a
 fabulous cook. Her children fondly remember her homemade noodles and 
especially the “bathtub” ice cream. Before her ice cream churn was 
electric, each of the children took turns manning the crank, 100 times 
each. She not only fed her growing children, but also cooked at the 
grade school cafeteria. Later Verna Jean worked with Genevieve Brunk in 
the Clerk of the District Court office. Then she became the bookkeeper 
and dispatcher for Graham County Farmers until she retired.

Verna 
Jean had a musical talent that she shared with love from which her 
family, church, and community greatly benefitted. She taught piano to 
many children. For more than 50 years she played the organ and piano, 
not only for church services, but also numerous funerals, weddings, and 
other events.

Once the children were grown, Verna Jean and Duane 
traveled every chance they could. One time even found them taking a 
motorcycle trip alongside Larry and Shelly to Kearney, Nebraska. The 
bank tours, which they especially looked forward to, were rarely missed.
 Racing became a passion for Verna Jean when Larry, Jeff and Shawn 
participated. The couple enjoyed seeing many new places as they followed
 their grandchildren and great grandchildren around the United States 
watching their various athletic competitions.

Verna Jean was 
preceded in death by her parents, brothers: Charles Morris, Lawrence 
Morris, infant brothers, Robert Richard and Harold Eugene; sisters 
Bonnie Miller and Leota Brumbaugh. Those left to mourn are her husband 
of 74 years, Duane Radcliffe of Hill City; children:  Ron and wife Joy 
Radcliffe of Hill City, Diana and husband Larry Crosby of Littleton, 
Colorado, Larry and wife Shelly Radcliffe of Hill City, and Brenda 
Appelhans of Hill City; nine grandchildren; 13 great grandchildren; 
brother-in-law Dean Miller, and a host of nieces, nephews, and friends.

Verna
 Jean had a contagious smile and a kind heart, never showing signs of 
anger or disappointment. May her legacy of love for family and friends, 
her joy of music, fun and laughter, remain in the hearts of those who 
knew and loved her.

Virginia Arlene Campbell Lavery, age 54, of Colby, died October 22, 
2022, at Swedish Medical Center, in Englewood, CO, from a brain 
aneurysm. 
Virginia was born on December 11, 1967, in Abilene, KS, to parents 
Maurice “Red” Deaun and Doris Louise (Miller) Campbell. Her family lived
 in Harrah, OK and McPherson, KS before finally settling in Colby, KS, 
on June 1, 1977. 
Virginia attended the First Baptist Church of Colby and accepted Christ as her Savior in 1981. 
She attended Colby Public Schools, where she participated in Ed 
Flohrschutz’s drama class and performed in Eagle Antics. Virginia 
graduated from Colby High School in 1986 and the next day was employed 
by Paul Hubert, on a harvest crew in Texas for the summer, to earn money
 for college. She attended Cloud County Community College and graduated 
in 1988 with an Associate of Applied Science in Business degree. She 
then moved to Topeka, KS and accepted a position as a receptionist at 
Young’s Inc., then worked at the Topeka Bible Church as the secretary. 
On August 5, 1989, Virginia married Christopher Trundle. To this union 
two children were born: Akaylah and Jacob. The couple divorced in 2014. 
On March 6, 2019, Virginia married Richard Lee Lavery at the First 
Baptist Church in Colby. 
Virginia was a mother, housewife, Avon Representative, Creative Memories
 Consultant, Stampin’ Up Demonstrator and a homeschool teacher to her 
two children. She had also worked as a clerk for Debbie Helus at the 
Colby Dollar General and as a night manager at Village Inn. In 2017, she
 settled in to be the front desk clerk at the Comfort Inn and was 
promoted to General Manager in 2022. Virginia also was a self-employed 
housekeeper from 2008 on. 
She was preceded in death by her father; grandparents, Roy Campbell, 
Velma (Goebel) Campbell, Emmett Miller, Mabel (Kissell) Miller Woods and
 Hobart Woods; uncles, Bernal Dean Campbell, Rudy Doubrava, Morvel 
Campbell and Pete Peters; aunt Ruby Peters and an infant child. 
She is survived by her husband Richard, of the home; her children, 
Akaylah Trundle and Jacob Trundle, both of Colby; mother Doris Campbell,
 of Colby; sister Marlyce (Will) Campbell Warner, of WaKeeney, KS; 
brother Rodney (Tammy Wild) Campbell, of Seattle, WA and nephews Tyson

Virginia Arlene Campbell Lavery

Julius John "Curly" Bieker passed away Saturday, October 22, 2022, at 
the Sheridan County Health Long Term Care at the age of 90.  Julius was 
born on November 21, 1931, to Clement and Lena (Mader) Bieker in Sheridan
 County, Kansas.  He was a lifelong resident of Sheridan County.

On
 October 29, 1951, he was united in marriage to Wilma Hyde.  Julius 
worked as a painter for the Union Pacific Railroad, was a welder for 
Arnold Electric and he performed maintenance at The Hoxie Feedlot during
 his life.  Julius enjoyed playing in a band that entertained residents 
at the Long Term Care and Ridgewood Manor in Hoxie.  He had a love for 
his family, gardening and music.

He is survived by his 
wife, Wilma; sons, Larry Bieker and wife Susan, John Bieker and wife 
Tina, Steve Bieker all of Hoxie; daughters, Ladena Jones of Hoxie, Judy 
Powers and husband Jim and Ladonna Krider all of Quinter; 13 
grandchildren and 31 great grandchildren.

Julius was 
preceded in death by his parents Clem and Lena Bieker; brothers, Alvin, 
Frank and Donnie Bieker; sisters, Betty Johnson and Mary Ann Schultz.

Julius John 'Curly' Bieker

Carl D. Steinert, 75, died October 23, 2022, at Wesley Medical 
Center, Wichita, Kansas.&nbsp; He was born August 11, 1947, in Hays, Kansas, 
the son of Wilbert O. And Beatrice J. (Venus) Steinert.&nbsp; Carl graduated 
from Gorham High School in 1965, and later from the Wichita Barber 
School.&nbsp;

A resident of the Bushton area for 48 years, he began his barber shop
 experience having shops in both Holyrood and Bushton. Later he worked 
as a pumper in the oil field, and finally retiring from Oneok Gas 
Processing Plant in Bushton, where he also served on the Fire Brigade.

On September 2, 1967, he married Clydell Rafferty in Russell, Kansas. Together they raised four boys.&nbsp;

Carl loved working around his farm, giving haircuts to his family, and especially loved spending time with his grandkids.

He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Clydell Steinert of the home;
 sons, Craig (Tom Mulloy) Steinert of Kansas City, Missouri, Curtis 
(Kim) Steinert of Lehigh; and Cory (Traci) Steinert of Midlothian, 
Texas; daughter-in-law, Tina Steinert of Lyons; siblings, Roger (Kay) 
Steinert of Leawood, Lloyd (Susan) of Merritt Island, Florida, Roy 
(Jeanette) Steinert of Wichita, Judy (Paul) Schmidtberger of Russell, 
Don (Jane) Steinert of Claflin, and Mary Lou Steinert of Lawrence; 
sister-in-law, Cheryl Steinert of Lyons; six grandchildren, Cortney

Carl D. Steinert

Gary Wayne Pletcher, 80, passed away on October 23, 2022, at 
University of Kansas Health Systems – Great Bend. He was born on October
 30, 1941, to William and Ruth (Crosby) Pletcher in Frankfort, Kan. On 
January 24, 1991, he married the love of his life, Sara Medina, in Las 
Vegas, Nev. She was always by his side until the end; she survives.

Coming from Sharon Springs in 1985, Gary was a resident of Great Bend
 since 1985. He was a self-employed farmer, truck driver, aerial 
sprayer, and salon construction manager. Gary was a “jack of all 
trades”, being known for his carpentry, mechanic skills, and piloting 
abilities, especially with his Calm Air Aerial Spraying service. He was a
 member of the Sharon Springs Wesleyan Methodist Church, carrying his 
faith with him throughout his work and life. Gary was also a member of 
the Good Guys Car Club, IHRA, and was a circle track driver, winning 
nationals at Hutchinson in 1975-76.

Survivors include his wife Sara of the home; a son, Tyler Pletcher 
and Jenna with grandson, Abel Pletcher, of Hoisington, Kan.; a daughter,
 Lisa Amerine with grandson, Ethyn Pletcher, of Ellinwood, Kan.; his 
brother, Donnie (Louise) Pletcher of Sharon Springs, Kan.; 
siblings-in-law, Dennis (Rita) Smith of Weskan, Kan., and Jess (Carmen) 
Medina of San Antonio, Tex.; close family friend (P.I.C.), Rhonda Hughes
 of Great Bend, Kan.; and numerous nieces and nephews. He is preceded in
 death by his parents; a daughter, Jodi Lynn; in-laws, Jess and Dolores 
Medina; and a brother-in-law, Norman Medina.

There will be no visitation as cremation has taken place. A 
celebration of life will be scheduled at a later date. 

Memorials have 
been designated to Parkinson’s Foundation Heartland Chapter or Golden 
Belt Home Health and Hospice, in care of Bryant Funeral Home.

Michael L. “Mike” Howell, 72, Hays, 
passed away Sunday, October 23, 2022, at home with his family after a 
long and courageous battle with cancer. 

He was born May 29, 1950, to Jerry and 
Erma (Smith) Howell in Kearney, Nebraska. He spent most of his childhood
 in Phillipsburg, Kansas where his father was a teacher. After attending
 his eighth-grade year at Hill City, Kansas, his family moved to Lucas, 
Kansas. &nbsp;He graduated from Lucas High School in 1968 and NCK Vo-tech in 
Beloit. &nbsp;He met his wife Sharon, his high school sweetheart, and the two
 were married for more than 52 years and were blessed with three 
children: Chris, Doug, and Melissa. 

Mike had several jobs working for 
Schult Homes, Allied Oil Field Cementing, King of the Road, Hoovestol, 
and his favorite job was bus driver for Hays USD 489. &nbsp;He loved the kids
 and watching their games and activities. &nbsp;He was a fan of all sports 
and enjoyed supporting the Hays High Indians.&nbsp; He also enjoyed hunting, 
fishing, the Kansas City Royals, Chiefs, and KU basketball. &nbsp;He loved 
watching his grandson's football games, going to work, and joking with 
his co-workers.&nbsp;

Survivors include his wife Sharon of 
Hays, three children:&nbsp; Chris (Pam) Howell of Hoisington, Doug (Ginger) 
Howell of Alton, and Melissa (Justin) Nicholls of Blue Springs, MO, a 
brother: Tim Howell of Phillipsburg, two sisters: Linda (Bernie) 
Dougherty of Parsons and Joyce “Red” (Rick) Gregory of Lucas, his 
grandchildren, whom he was so proud of: Kirstin (Jeremy) Hoffman, Kregg 
(Charlotte) Howell, Bryan (Shayna) Howell, Trenton (Payton) Howell, 
Dylan Howell, Hunter Howell, Carson Shellito, and Kaci Nicholls, and 
four great grandchildren.&nbsp;
