Shirley Jean Miller, 86, of Claflin, Kansas, died on Wednesday, December 23, 2020, at her home in Claflin.

Shirley was born on August 09, 1934, in Abilene, Kansas, the daughter
 of Herbert “Boots” and Helen (Sullivan) Shumaker.&nbsp; She grew up in 
Russell, Kansas, and graduated from Russell High School.&nbsp; After high 
school she attended Marymount College in Salina, Kansas, for 2 years and
 received an associate’s degree in Home Economics.&nbsp; She met, fell in 
love and was united in marriage to Marvin Bryan Miller on October 9, 
1954 in Russell, Kansas.&nbsp; From this union, they were blessed with four 
children Linda, Debra, Marlene and Bryan.&nbsp; She was a longtime member of 
St. Mary Queen of Angels Catholic Church in Russell.&nbsp; She was also a 
member of Beta Sigma Phi Sorority, T.O.P.S., and was an active member 
and leader of the Girl Scouts.&nbsp; She enjoyed sewing, crafts, cooking, 
reading cook books, Daniel Steel books, butterflies, pets and going to 
Wilson Lake.&nbsp; Most of all she enjoyed spending time with her family.&nbsp; 
She especially enjoyed time with her children, grandchildren and great 
grandchildren.

Surviving family include her husband Marvin of the home, daughters 
Linda F. Michaelis and husband Dan of Claflin, Kansas, Debra Miller of 
Russell, Kansas, Marlene Harris and husband John of Raymore, Missouri; 
son Bryan E. Miller of Russell, Kansas; brother Tom Shumaker and wife 
Judy of Sturgis, Michigan; 5 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents and brother Herbert 
Shumaker. 

A Catholic graveside service will be held at 11 A.M. on Friday, March 10, 2023, at the St. Mary Catholic Cemetery in Russell, Kansas with Father Mike Elan officiating. Cremation has been selected by the family. The service will be held for <a href="https://hayspost.com/posts/bc0adb99-d166-4d1e-9bc8-fed37bf10135">both Shirley and her husband Marvin</a> and burial of the ashes will follow the graveside service.&nbsp;

 at 10 a.m., Friday, March 10, 2023, St. John Catholic Church in 
Lawrence.&nbsp; Military graveside inurnment will be held at a later date in 
Great Bend, KS. Leon passed peacefully March 1, 2023, at LMH Health in 
Lawrence.

Leon was born September 2, 1945, in Victoria, Kansas, the son of Ray and Magdalena (Kuhn) Romme.

Leon began working for EMR, Inc. as a Project Manager in 1991 in 
Lawrence until the company transferred him to Fort Worth, TX. in 1997. 
Upon his retirement in 2016, Leon and Jolene moved back to Lawrence to be
 close to family.

Leon was proud of his service as a United States Marine and served 
during Vietnam. He was his son’s and their friend’s Biggest Fan.&nbsp; He was
 extremely proud that his two sons had the opportunity to play for the 
storied Lawrence High Football program.

He was an avid sports fan.&nbsp; He enjoyed NASCAR, playing cards and 
dominos, wood working and yardwork. He was very proud of his lawn!

His passion for dogs was evident with his three Boxers (Buster, Gordy
 &amp; Deuce) which gave him joy.&nbsp; He was a reader and loved and 
practiced his Catholic Faith.

Leon married Jolene Steinbacher on September 18, 1971, in Great Bend, KS.&nbsp; She survives of the home.

Other survivors include two sons, Bradley and Brett Romme both of 
Lawrence, KS, his sister Dolores Schmeidler of Hays, KS; several 
brother-in-law’s and sister -in-law’s and nieces and nephews.&nbsp; He was 
preceded in death by his parents, his sister and brother-in-law, Vera 
and Paul Schmidtberger who helped raise him, his brothers, Robert, 
Thomas and Donald; his nephews, Steven Schmidtberger and Thomas Romme Jr. and several brother-in-laws and sister-in-laws.

Leon loved his immediate family, his extended family, and his 
friends.&nbsp; There is nothing he would not do for them when someone was in 
need.

The family will say a rosary at 4 p.m. on Thursday, March 9, 2023, at
 Warren-McElwain Mortuary with the visitation to follow from 5-7 p.m.

The family suggests memorial contributions to St. John Catholic 
Church or to Wounded Warrior Project and may be sent in care of

Services for Deana Reimer, 76, Lawrence, will be at 2pm Friday at Rumsey-Yost Funeral Home.

Deana left this world peacefully on Sunday, March 5th, 2023.

She was born on October 19, 1946, in Neodesha, KS, the daughter of 
Arlie Dale Hixon and Bonniemae Hixon. She graduated from Pawnee Rock 
High School in 1964 and earned her Bachelor’s degree in Spanish and 
English in 1968 and her Master’s degree in 1983 in school administration
 from Fort Hays State University.

Deana and Keith were married June 11, 1966, in Pawnee Rock, KS, they 
settled in Dodge City, KS, in 1968 and later moved to Lawrence, KS, in 
2002.

Deana started her work in education in the Cimarron school district 
teaching English and Spanish to students of all ages. Deana began 
working in Migrant Education in 1990.

She dedicated her life to helping migrant families and continued 
until her retirement in 2004. Deana enjoyed spending time with her 
family, especially her grandkids.

Deana shared her love for the KC Chiefs and KU Jayhawks with anyone 
who would listen. She enjoyed spending time on ‘Lucy’ her iPad, sending 
messages and jokes at all hours of the day and night. Deana never met a 
stranger and always had a hug and joke to give. She was an inspiration 
to all that met her, loved being on stage and left everyone with a smile
 on their face and a “Deana” story.

Deana is survived by her husband Keith; son Tyson (Val) Lawrence; 
daughter Keena Schmidt (Chet) Lawrence; five grandchildren, Crosby, 
Rileigh, Ava, Caeson, and Greysen; two brothers, Larry Hixon (Ronda) 
Pawnee Rock, KS ; Jon Hixon (Karen) Storm Lake, IA; sister-in-law Sally 
Hixon, Howard CO; many nieces and nephews, and her beloved dog Skeeter.

Deana was preceded in death by her brother Jerry Hixon and parents, Dale and Bonniemae Hixon.

Luke Leon Stricker, 63, of&nbsp;Winona, Kansas, and former Milberger, Kansas, resident, died on Saturday, March 4, 2023, at the Wilson Care and Rehabilitation Center in Wilson, Kansas. &nbsp;

Luke was born on March 27, 1959, in Russell,&nbsp;Kansas, the son of Leon Henry and Carla June (Pruter) Stricker. &nbsp;He grew up on the family farm in Milberger and graduated from Russell High School in the class&nbsp;of 1977. &nbsp;He was blessed with two children Jenna and&nbsp;Shawn. &nbsp;Luke worked&nbsp;as a farmer on the family farm but also worked&nbsp;selling farming machinery throughout&nbsp;Kansas and Nebraska. &nbsp;He was a longtime member of the United Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Milberger, Kansas. &nbsp;He enjoyed watching Kansas University&nbsp;basketball&nbsp;and&nbsp;selling farming machinery. &nbsp;Most of all he enjoyed being outdoors and working the family farm and spending time with his family.

Surviving&nbsp;family&nbsp;include&nbsp;his daughter Jenna Shank of Truth or Consequences, New Mexico, and son Shawn Stricker and wife Ashley of Winona, Kansas; brothers Kirk Stricker&nbsp;and&nbsp;wife&nbsp;Joni of Wichita, Kansas, and John Stricker&nbsp;of Anderson, South Carolina, and 6 grandchildren. &nbsp;He was preceded in death by his parents.

Edith Ethel Lewallen

Jerome Edmund Herrmann, 91, passed away peacefully to his heavenly home on Tuesday February 28, 2023, at the Soldiers Home in Fort Dodge, KS.&nbsp; Jerome was born March 1, 1932, the 5th&nbsp;of 6 children to Carl and Martha (Weber) Herrmann. Jerome attended Saint Peter and Paul grade school NNW of Kinsley and graduated Kinsley High School in 1950.&nbsp;

On April 14, 1959, Jerome married his forever best friend and love Vivienne Sweatman in Larned, KS.&nbsp; They worked hand in hand together and enjoyed a happily wedded life for 49 years.&nbsp; They were blessed with 5 children to complete their lives.&nbsp; Jerome lost his devoted wife and soulmate on December 15, 2008.

Jerome is a veteran of the Korean War where he served overseas in Korea for close to 2 years.&nbsp; Jerome was a lifetime farmer and rancher with a passion for livestock, Jerome lived 85 of his 91 years on the Carl Herrmann original homestead.&nbsp; Jerome was well known and respected in the livestock business for many years.&nbsp; Jerome enjoyed baseball, hunting, fishing, 3 ball billiards, pitch and dominos.

A strong man of his Catholic faith, dad practiced and lived his Catholic faith every day until the very end.

A shining life filled with family, faith and many accomplishments; a life well lived.

Dad is survived by his 5 children; Stan (Janell), Cathy Pfeifer (Terry), Mark, Maureen, Jon (Michelle). 8 grandchildren; Zayne (Aundrea), Subhi, Alex, Paige, Caitlin Sharp (Ryan), Kellen, Bryce, Mackenzie; and 2 great-grandchildren; Aaliyah and Mohammed.

Jerome is also survived by 1 sister; Janice Gleason (Ronnie) and 1 sister in-law Billie.&nbsp; Jerome was preceded in death by his parents; and 4 siblings, Jim, Gerald, Gilbert and Mary.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

Funeral services will be held on Thursday March 9, 2023, at 10:30 a.m. at St. Nicholas Catholic Church in Kinsley with Fr. Ben Green presiding.&nbsp; Burial will follow at St. Nicholas cemetery.&nbsp; Vigil will be held Wednesday March 8th, 2023, at 7 p.m. with family present from 6 - 7 p.m.

She was born November 20, 1951, in Colby, KS, to Jay and Margene

this union three children were born. Jane loved spending time with her 
family, especially her grandchildren.

Doris Marie Knight Blanke, 93, of Russell, Kansas, and former 
Kensington, Kansas resident, died on Saturday, March 4, 2023, at the 
Russell Regional Hospital.

Doris was born on May 4, 1929, in Phillips County, Kansas, the 
daughter of Howard and Julia (Lala) Smith.&nbsp; She was born and raised on 
the family farm south of Kirwin, Kansas.&nbsp; She attended Jaybird country 
school through grade school.&nbsp; Her father died from tuberculosis when she
 was 12 and her mother remarried when she was 14.&nbsp; The family moved to a
 farm north of Kensington, Kansas, and Doris graduated from Kensington 
High School.&nbsp; 

She was united in marriage to Glen Knight on July 20, 
1947, in Kensington.&nbsp; From this union Doris and Glen were blessed 
raising four children Jerry, Terry, Glenda and Cindy.&nbsp; 

She was an 
accountant supervisor for Kansas Nebraska Energy for 28 years and worked
 as a county clerk, waitress and doctor’s assistant.&nbsp; Doris found love a
 second time and was united in marriage to Kenny Blanke on October 30, 
2000, in Athol, Kansas.&nbsp; She was a longtime member of Athol 
Congregational Church in Athol, Kansas.&nbsp; She was also a member of the 
American Legion Auxiliary and Eastern Star.&nbsp; She enjoyed dancing, 
working crossword puzzles, traveling with Kenny to all 50 states, 
camping and getting together with her family.&nbsp; She especially enjoyed 
snowbirding to Arizona with Kenny and spending time with her many 
grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Surviving family include her husband Kenny of the home, sons Jerry 
Knight and wife Vicki of Loveland, Colorado, and Terry Knight of North 
Platte, Nebraska; daughters Glenda Ratliff and husband Dennis of Smith 
Center, Kansas, and Cindy Beckmann and companion David Stewart of 
Gaylord, Kansas;&nbsp; brother Larry Westerman and wife Tonya of Kensington, 
Kansas; Kenny’s children Gene Blanke and wife Marsha of Lakehills, 
Texas, David Blanke and wife Pat of Florissant, Missouri, Heidi Blanke 
of Ballwin, Missouri, and Star Gates and husband Greg of Wichita, 
Kansas;&nbsp; 22 grandchildren and 36 great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, first husband Glen Knight 
on May 7, 1998, infant sister Gwen, step-father Frank Westerman 
grandchildren Sammy and Cory Reeves and son in-law David Beckmann.

A celebration of Doris’ life will be held at 11 A.M. on Saturday, 
March 11, 2023, at the Athol Church of Christ in Athol, Kansas, with 
Pastor Becky Sadler officiating.&nbsp; Burial will follow at Germantown 
Cemetery in North Kensington, Kansas.&nbsp; Visitation will be from 9 A.M. to
 8 P.M. on Friday, March 10, 2023, at the Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary
 in Russell, Kansas, with family greeting guests from 6 P.M. to 7 P.M. 
Friday evening. &nbsp;A Prayer Service will be held at 7:00 PM at the

Robert E. “Bob” Fisher, 84, Marysville, died Wednesday, March 1, 2023, at Bryan East Hospital in Lincoln, NE.

Visitation will be held from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m., Monday, March 6 at
 Kinsley Mortuary in Marysville, followed by a Rosary service at 7 p.m. 
at St. Gregory’s Catholic Church in Marysville. The funeral service will
 be held at 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, March 7 at St. Gregory’s Catholic 
Church, followed by a Mass of Christian burial at St. Gregory’s Catholic
 Cemetery. Father Quentin Schmitz will officiate.

Bob was born on November 24, 1938, to Clements and Pauline (Stubert) 
Fisher near Antonino, KS.&nbsp; He graduated from Ellis High School in 1956.&nbsp;
 On September 17, 1960, he was united in marriage with Donna Lee Staab 
in St. Joseph Catholic Church in Hays, KS. This union was blessed with 
six children.

Bob worked as a butcher out of high school and then in the Hays area 
as a carpenter. He also held a real estate license before moving to 
Marysville in 1972.&nbsp; He worked for Bower Construction until the late 
80’s. He was a highly skilled carpenter and started his own carpentry 
business.&nbsp; He followed his years of carpentry by becoming the 
maintenance supervisor for Valley Heights High School. After retiring, 
he continued service by working for the Oak Tree Inn and &nbsp;up until his 
passing, kept himself busy cleaning the local theater.

He was a member of St. Gregory’s Catholic Church and was a 3rd Degree
 member of the Knights of Columbus.&nbsp; Family was always his number one 
priority. He enjoyed watching sports (especially when being played by 
his children and grandchildren), K-State, the Kansas City Chiefs and the
 Kansas City Royals. He was, above all, a loving husband, father, and 
grandfather.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his daughter, Carrie in 
1995; brothers, Alfred, Billy, Eddie, and Clarence Fisher, and sisters, 
Esther Bieker and Irene Bieker.

Survivors include his wife of 62 years, Donna; children, Mark (Jodi) 
Fisher, Bennington, KS, Kim (Steve) Christian, Omaha, NE, Jeff 
(Jennifer) Fisher, Robin Fisher (Jordan Ring), and Sandi (Eric) Wilson, 
all of Marysville, KS; a sister, Helen Pfeifer, Hays, KS; and eighteen 
grandchildren: Ryan Drinkgern, Mike, Matt, Jaclyn, Brett, Brandon, and 
Daniel Fisher; Morgan (Christian) Kramer, Jacee Christian, Caitlin

He was born June 24, 1954 at Fort Scott, Kansas, the son of Loy Asher 
and Esther Lorraine (Weaver) Stephenson.&nbsp; He attended school in Oakley, 
Kansas, where he was part of two State titles in Cross Country and remained
 an avid runner later in life.&nbsp; He worked for Tarbert Construction and 
later for Kan Tex Feeders for 14 years both in Ulysses, Kansas, and moved
 to Dodge City several years ago.

He was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Dodge City 
and participated in Special Olympics where he ran the mile.&nbsp; He enjoyed 
putting models together, especially model airplanes.&nbsp; He always wanted 
to stay busy doing something.

Survivors include: his mother, Dodge City; a brother, Larry 
Stephenson and wife Pam, Dodge City; a sister, Sherry Kirby and husband 
Ronald, Hugo, Colorado; 4 nieces and 2 nephews.

He was preceded in death by his father, uncles, aunts and grandparents.

Private family graveside services will be held at a later date at the
 Riley Memorial Cemetery in Chautauqua County, Kansas.&nbsp; There will be no
 public viewing, cremation has taken place.

Wanda Lee Viola Gano

Alexis Briann Buxton, age 22, kissed this
 world goodbye and danced into heaven on March 4th, 2023, after 
experiencing a perforated ulcer.&nbsp;

Alexis, but called Lexi by all those that loved her, was born on 
August 14th, 2000, in Carson City, Nevada. At just a few weeks old, she 
joined her parents and older sister in Scott City, Kansas, where she 
lived the next 22 years.&nbsp;

Lexi will always be remembered for her infectious smile, love of sushi, and vibrant hair.&nbsp;

Her boundless compassion for animals, particularly strays, kept her 
parents continuously surprised. The Heavenly reunion with her dog, 
Cannon, that recently passed was sure to be joyous.

Lexi also had a unique knack for communicating with children. 
Children were drawn to her, and Lexi was able to find uninhibited joy in
 the smallest things.

She loved drawing, music, and crafts, especially potion making at her grandma’s when she was younger.

Her family finds peace in knowing she was welcomed to heaven by her 
Grandpa Jack Buxton, Grandpa Eugene Eckels, and Grandma Ann Eckels.

Lexi will forever be remembered by her Parents - Jerry and Jynette 
Buxton of Scott City, Kansas, One Sister - Emily Buxton of Scott City, 
Kansas, One Half-Sister - Trina Alanis of Reno, Nevada, Grandmother -

James “Jimmy” Earl Addington, 74, passed away March 4, 2023, at his 
home in rural Ellinwood. He was born on March 6, 1948, to Eugene &amp; 
Okla (Dixon) Addington, in Independence, Kan.

A longtime area resident, Jimmy was an electrician for C&amp;P 
Electric and M&amp;M Line Construction. He enjoyed carpentry and 
remodeling trailer houses. Jimmy loved music and collected many albums 
throughout the years. He enjoyed helping his family and friends but 
especially loved family gatherings.

Survivors include, his sister, Mary Rose Lauber of Great Bend; many 
nieces and nephews, including, Anneda Mossberg (Shawn) of Ellinwood, 
Raven Hamit (David) of Great Bend, Tommy Drewel (Kristi) of Great Bend, 
Kenneth Rowe of Ellinwood, Larry Lauber (Jayda) of Great Bend, Charles 
Rowe of Great Bend, William Rowe of Great Bend and Jason Lauber of 
Lyons. He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Bobby 
Addington; and two sisters, Rossie Lauber and Marie Drewel.

Visitation will be held from Noon to 8:00 p.m., Wednesday, March 8, 
2023, at Bryant Funeral Home. Funeral service will be held at 10:30 
a.m., Thursday, March 9, 2023, at Bryant Funeral Home, with Reverend

George Richard Brown, 81, of Hesston, Kansas, passed away at 8:21 a.m., 
Thursday, March 2, 2023 at Wesley Medical Center, Wichita, Kansas. Richard was born in La Crosse, Kansas, on August 13, 1941, a son of George Brown Jr. and Dora (Schweitzer) Brown. Richard
 attended Danby Valley grade school, rural Brownell, Kansas, and 
graduated from Brownell High School, Brownell, Kansas in 1959. Through
 the years Richard worked as a farmer, a foreman and supervisor for San 
Ore Construction, of McPherson, JH Shears as a superintendent of road 
construction, Hutchinson, Kansas, Farmland and CHS as a mechanic until 
he retired. Richard enjoyed the outdoors, gardening, hunting, 
loved feeding his outdoor critters, and spending time with his friends 
and family, especially all his grand kids. Richard Brown was 
united in marriage to Carol Davis on June 1, 1963, in McCracken, Kansas. 
The young couple established their first home together in McCracken. 
This union was blessed with the birth of two children, Shelley and Gary. He
 is survived by his loving and devoted wife, Carol Brown, of Hesston, 
Kansas; his children Shelley Drassen and her husband Joe of O'Fallen, 
Illinois and Gary Brown of McPherson, Kansas; his sister Ann Chandley 
and her husband John of Hutchinson, Kansas. He is also survived 
by his two grandchildren, Megan Richmond and her husband Matt and 
Allison Drassen and his great-grandchild, Tyson Reeves. Richard was preceded in death by his parents. Visitation
 will be held on Monday, March 6, 2023, from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at 
Glidden - Ediger-Wiggins Chapel, in McPherson, Kansas. A

Terry Eugene Hager

Donna Marie Preston, 85, died on Friday, March 3, 2023, at Western Plains
 Medical Complex in Dodge City. She was born on April 22, 1937, at 
Thayer, Missouri the daughter of Donald &amp; Opal (Hammond) Edwards. 
She married William P. Preston on May 27, 1955, at Garden City. He died 
on July 1, 1999. 
Donna lived in several different places growing up including Chinook, 
Montana, Hays, Kansas, Great Bend, Kansas, and Blackwell, Oklahoma, before
 coming to Garden City and graduating from Garden City High School. She
 was mainly a homemaker for her family but had also worked as a Medical 
transcriptionist at St Catherine Hospital, substitute cook for Garden 
City schools and receptionist at Garnand Funeral Home. She enjoyed 
going to the Finney County Senior Center to play cards and also her 
other card playing groups but her biggest joy was raising her kids and 
grandkids. 
She is survived by her 2 Sons- Billy &amp; Ann Preston of Elk City, 
Oklahoma and Rob Preston of Garden City, 4 Grandchildren and 2 
Great-Grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her Parents, Husband 
and Brother- John Edwards. 
Funeral Service will be at 2:00 PM Wednesday at Garnand Funeral Home 
with Rev Randy Caddell officiating. Burial will be in Valley View 
Cemetery in Garden City. Friends may call from 9:00 AM to Service Time

 Elnora Greathouse, was born March 18, 1930 in Nekoma, Kansas, to Onie 
and Nora (Baldwin) Mills. She passed away March 2, 2023, at the age of 
92, in Hutchinson, KS.

She attended Nekoma grade school, La Crosse High School and Fort Hays, and was a graduate from Sterling College.

June
 began her teaching career in 1948 and continued for most of her life. 
She taught in Yoder and Nickerson Elementary as a kindergarten teacher 
for 32 years.

She married the love of her life, Jerry 
Greathouse, on January 29, 1956, in Nekoma KS during a blizzard. They 
were happily married for 45 years before his passing in 2001.

June
 is survived by her son, Rick (Valerie Avery) Greathouse, and daughter, 
Connie (Larry Flores) Johnson, grandson Justin Bright, and great 
grandchildren, Killian and Sawyer Bright.

She was a member of 
several local organizations, including Low Vision Group, Elliots 
Widowers Group and the Horticulture Club. 

She was a volunteer with RSVP 
tax, the rec commission and the horticulture club.

Frank D. Jordan, 62, died on Friday, February 17, 2023, at his home in 
Hutchinson. He was born on February 13, 1961, at Scott City the son of 
Frank A. &amp; Von ( Davidson) Jordan. He married Shelly Stern and they
 later divorced. 
Frank attended Shields Grade School and Dighton High School. After his 
education he lived in Dighton and worked for area farmers and drove 
trucks. He later moved to Garden City and worked as a mechanic at 
American Implement. In 2022 he moved to Hutchinson to be closer to his 
daughter and worked at Home Depot. He enjoyed fishing, going to Scott 
Lake but especially being with his daughter and doing things with her. 
He is survived by his Daughter- Trish Jordan of Hutchinson, Sister- Jody
 &amp; Al Lafferty of Weatherford, Texas, Brother- R.C &amp; Elizabeth 
Jordan of Hays and Sister- Susan &amp; Marion Sisco of Garden City. He 
was preceded in death by his Parents and 3 Brothers- Terry Jordan, Chuck
 Jordan and Craig Jordan.

Effie G. Crowell, 97, Rush Center, Kansas, passed away Saturday, 
March 4, 2023, at Rush County Memorial Hospital Intermediate Swing Bed, 
La Crosse, Kansas.

Effie was born July 10, 1925, in Taylor County, Iowa, the daughter of
 Charles Ephram and Ona Candida (Pace) Million.&nbsp; She was a lifelong 
resident of Rush County, Kansas.&nbsp; She owned and operated Effie’s Place 
in Rush Center, Kansas, for &nbsp;50+ years before her retirement.

She was a member of Hope Lutheran Church, Rush Center, Kansas.

On June 9, 1942, she married Jefferson “Jeff” Crowell.&nbsp; He preceded her in death July 25, 1987.

Survivors include:&nbsp; one son, Gary Crowell (Carol), Rush Center, 
Kansas; one daughter, Linda Woods (Dave), Rush Center, Kansas; five 
grandchildren, Steven Crowell (Patty), Clearwater, Kansas, Trevor 
Crowell (Judy), McCracken, Kansas, Bryan Crowell, Russell, Kansas, Amy 
Gassmann (Eric), Grainfield, Kansas, and Julia Oetting (Blake), Oklahoma
 City, Oklahoma; 13 great grandchildren, Kevin, Matthew, Jacob, Rachel, 
Ryan, Gage, Cody, Nichole, Wyatt, Lauren, Dylan, Grayden, and Kinsley; 
nine great great grandchildren, Roman, Atley, Lindsay, Lauren, Beau, 
Nick, Faith, Cecelia, and Levi; and one great great great grandson, 
Myles.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; one grandson, 
Tim Crowell; one brother, Clifford Million; and three sisters, Doris 
Congdon, Betty Wilson, and Eva Houston.

John Leo Hayden, 78, died Friday, March 3, 2023, in the presence of 
his loving family and friends.&nbsp; Leo was born on February 3, 1945, in 
Goodland, Kansas, to Leo Bailey Hayden and Mary (Ellison) Hayden.&nbsp; He 
demonstrated both strength and a fighting spirit from the very 
beginning.&nbsp; As a young man of just 100 pounds “soaking wet,” his dad 
taught him how to box.&nbsp; He was so proficient at boxing, that it was also
 his dad who made him quit!&nbsp; Effort was also something Leo didn’t lack.&nbsp;
 At a very early age, he demonstrated outstanding, natural athletic 
ability and strove to “outwork the competition.” He excelled in all 
sports and helped to lead his teams at Goodland High School to 
championships.&nbsp; He was a natural leader and all that played with him 
became lifelong friends.

While setting several records playing football at Fort Hays State 
University, Leo found the love of his life in Judy Marcotte Hayden.&nbsp; He 
pursued his wife with the same determination that he approached all 
areas of his life.&nbsp; Leo would say, “Judy, I’m watching you walk!”&nbsp; Upon 
graduation from college, she finally succumbed to his efforts and they 
got married on August 31,1968 and the rest reads like a fairytale.&nbsp; He 
loved her with all he was and the two of them shared that love with 
their 3 children and 8 grandchildren.&nbsp; His faith grew each year and in 
times of great tragedy, he was their rock.&nbsp; He helped his family weather
 the losses of his nephews, his parents, his brother-in-law, and several
 close friends.&nbsp;

Leo was always coaching.&nbsp; He coached his own kids and everyone else’s
 too.&nbsp; He certainly wasn’t shy, always demanding their best; helping 
them build the character, friendship, and bonds that would last a 
lifetime.&nbsp; Whether it was winning the State Championship in baseball 
with a team that “didn’t even know they were good,” to mentoring young 
men and women in their real estate careers, he was always able to help 
people to be their best and to achieve more than they might have 
dreamed.&nbsp; After all, that was who he was and he wanted others to 
approach life the same way.&nbsp; His life was both simple and complex, but 
always approached with an easiness that made others marvel.&nbsp; He excelled
 at making time for his family, hard work, and having fun!

Leo loved hunting, playing golf at Sugar Hills, and watching sports.&nbsp;
 From sharing the Hayden family recipe for pheasant and quail to playing
 “Pig and Wolf” at the course he loved so much, Leo’s passion for people
 and life was the center of his universe.&nbsp;

Building a real estate company with his family also gave Leo great 
pleasure.&nbsp; Mostly, he liked people and found his work “easy” as he was 
good at his craft and he loved what he did.&nbsp; Still coaching, he helped 
many people and their families understand that “work is work, but family
 is what is most important.”&nbsp; His company, Hayden Outdoors, is a family 
within itself with deep roots and traditions that will surely continue 
to cherish their founder and build upon his legacy.

Leo’s relationship with God grew daily.&nbsp; Alongside his wife, who was 
his best teacher, he lead his family down the “right path.”&nbsp; The prayers
 he lead at hunting camps, work functions, and family occasions will no 
doubt be famous for a long time and will never be duplicated! He was 
proof that faith can and does make life better.

Five years ago, Leo was hit hard with the news that he “had 3 months 
to live.”&nbsp; True to his nature, he attacked the news and the diagnosis 
head on. &nbsp;He leaned on his wife and family and rarely complained.&nbsp; One 
of his favorite sayings was “Never Give Up…Never Give Up.” He certainly 
didn’t and, even while dying, taught his family even more about 
determination, strength, and faith.

Together, we celebrate our husband, dad, grandpa, papa, friend, 
mentor, coach, and just one hell of a good man.&nbsp; His legacy will live on
 in all of us and we will be better for knowing and loving him.&nbsp; John 
Leo Hayden truly made the world a better place.&nbsp; “If you see me getting 
smaller…….”

Leo is survived by his wife, Judy (Marcotte) Hayden; 3 children, Dax 
(Michelle) Hayden, Arin Thomas, and Seth (Renata) Hayden; 8

Thomas, and Sophia, Paige, and Kayne Hayden; his sister Patty (Hayden)

Lifelong Phillips County resident Jan R. Schemper passed away Friday, March 3, 2023, at the Logan Manor, 
Logan, KS, at the age of 85.

He was born February 10, 1938, in Prairie View, KS the son of Robert “Bob” and Wauneta (Wolters) Schemper.

Jan was united in marriage to Eileen M. Stutterheim on June 1, 1957, in Prairie View, KS.

Survivors include his wife Eileen of 
Prairie View, son Josh Schemper and wife Elizabeth of Prairie View; 
daughters Joy Prendergast and husband Richard of Salina, Nancy Molzahn 
and husband Doug of Agra, and Jodi Bretz and husband Mark of Prairie 
View; brothers Kenneth and wife Bev of Prairie View and Douglas and wife
 Jeniece of Long Island; sisters Carolyn Tien and husband Arlo of 
Prairie View, Sandra Dole and husband Dick of Almena; a sister-in-law 
Joyce Schemper of Kearney, NE; 18 grandchildren; and 20 great 
grandchildren.

Jan was preceded in death by his parents, brother Gary, son Brad, and granddaughter Chassidy Breese.

Funeral services will be Tuesday,

Ernest Albert Schlatter, 83 of Lebanon passed away March 3, 2023, at the Smith County Memorial Hospital in Smith Center, KS.

Ernie
 was born February 20, 1940, on the family home south of Lebanon, Smith 
County, Kansas.  He was one of three children of Albert (Curly) and Ruth
 (Pletcher) Schlatter.  He attended the Chalk Mound one room school 
house until 8th grade and then attended Lebanon High School, where he 
graduated in 1958.  Ernie was active in football, basketball, track and 
FFA.  In his high school yearbook, Ernie prophesied that he wanted to be
 the biggest farmer south of Hwy 36.  He received FFA’s highest honor, 
the American Farmer Degree in 1960.  After high school, Ernie joined his
 brother Jim to pursue his dream of farming.  On the farm, they raised 
hogs, cattle, and crops.  He enjoyed hunting, trapping and softball.

Ernie
 married Barbara Allen on May 10, 1964, at the Oak Creek Christian 
Church south of Lebanon.  To this union were born a son, Walter 
Frederick, on March 17, 1965, and a daughter, Sheila Marie on March 24, 
1968.  Ernie joined the National Guard in August of 1961 and received a 
medical discharge in 1966 at the rank of Sergeant E-5.  He told stories 
of summer camp and serving at Fort Knox during the Cuban Missile Crisis.
  He talked about how cold it was during the winter and how the Cubans 
being trained there would not leave their barracks.

He was a 
member of the Oak Creek Christian Church and served as a deacon for many
 years.  Ernie served on many boards in the area including Kansas Star 
Base, Kansas Wheat Commission, Midway Coop, Smith County Extension and 
Smith County Soil Conservation for 30 years.  Over the years, Ernie was 
active in K-State Extension activities and hosted many crop plots.  One 
year, he helped his granddaughter, Ashley with a wheat plot as a 4-H 
project.  Ernie and Barbara were awarded the 2006 Kansas Master Farmer 
and Master Homemaker awards.  Ernie won many crop yield contests over 
the years through the extension program.  In 2017, he won the Kansas 
State Soybean Yield contest on a no-till dryland division with 95.95 
bushels per acre.

Ernie was excited that his son received the 
American Farmer Degree in 1985, which was 25 years after he had received
 his degree.  Ernie was proud to see his granddaughter receive her 
American Farmer Degree in 2013 at the Louisville, Kentucky FFA 
convention.  While at the convention he was able to see his cousin Tony 
Small, who worked for the National FFA organization.

Barbara 
played a pivotal role in the family farm operation and fought a long 
battle of lung disease and passed away on October 16, 2012.  Ernie 
married Carla (Badger) Naasz on July 24, 2015, at the American Lutheran 
Church in Smith Center, KS.  Carla assisted with the farm operation and 
as Ernie’s health declined, she kept the farm going by running the 
day-to-day operations.

Ernie was a big fan of WWII history and 
read many books on the subject.  Part of the fascination was due to his 
uncle Walter F. Schlatter serving in WWII and passed on the stories from
 family members of Walter visiting home before being shipped off to 
England and later being killed in battle.  In later years, Ernie took a 
trip to see his uncles grave in France and had a picture taken at his 
graveside marker.

Ernie is survived by his wife, Carla (Naasz) 
Schlatter of the home, son Walter (Kim) Schlatter of Bates City, MO, 
daughter Sheila (Dwayne) Lorence of Lebanon, KS, Brock (Sheri) Naasz,
