Ross W. Wagner, 77 passed away on March 31, 2023, at his home in 
WaKeeney, Kansas.&nbsp; He was born on September 7, 1945 in Hays, KS the son 
of William “Bill” and Elene (Moden) Wagner.

Ross lived his entire life in WaKeeney, graduating from Trego 
Community High School in 1963.&nbsp; He attended Fort Hays State University.&nbsp;
 He married Diane (Riedell) Weber on November 30, 1974, at the Bethlehem
 Lutheran Church, WaKeeney and to this union one daughter was born.&nbsp;

He served in the United States Army from January 1967 to January 
1969.&nbsp; Ross worked for Flex King Inc. Quinter, KS as a welder.&nbsp; He then
 worked for the sand and gravel division of Siebert Sand Company, Ness 
City, Allied Inc. and APAC, Hays Division, Hays, KS.&nbsp;

Ross was quite an ornery child, from rolling a coin down the center 
isle of church to trapping critters before school and being sprayed by a
 skunk.

His passions were KU basketball, fly fishing, coaching girls’ 
softball, bird hunting, and breeding, training, and field trialing 
English Setter bird dogs. He enjoyed Kansas Jayhawk basketball.&nbsp; He 
would get a call from Lindsey during the game to which he would reply, 
“I’m watching the game” and hang up or call after the game to celebrate 
of complain.

Ross loved to fly fish the mountain streams of Colorado.&nbsp; As a child,
 his family spent summers in the Fraiser Valley at the Wagner cabin. 
That tradition continued with his family traveling every summer to Aunt 
Ethel’s cabin.&nbsp; Ross and son, Eric, would spend hours wandering through 
the mountains following the streams, coming back to the cabin to clean 
the fish, and cooking them on the fire pit.&nbsp; He passed the passion for 
fishing to his grandsons.&nbsp; Now his grandson is taking his daughter to 
fish those same streams.

Ross hunted at a young age with his Dad and Pop.&nbsp; He got his first 
English setter in the early 70’s and by the 80’s had a Champion.&nbsp; Ross 
hung up his field trialing hat for some time until he acquired his 
beloved dog, Floyd.&nbsp; Only the last few years did he get back into the 
field trial game.&nbsp; Floyd stated winning: the trials took them to 
Oklahoma, Missouri, Arkansas, Illinois, and throughout Kansas.&nbsp; Floyd 
now has offspring on the field trial circuit.&nbsp; Ross had a good time and 
met a lot of wonderful people traveling to those trials and also 
reconnected with old friends.

Ross is survived by his wife, Diane, of the home; daughter, Lindsey 
(Heath) Wagner of Maple Hill, KS; step-daughter, Talle (Danny) Dykema of
 Ellis; step-son, Eric Riedell of Hesperia, CA; and sister, Linda 
Steinle of Georgetown, TX. He has ten step-grandchildren and three 
step-great grandchildren.

Ross was preceded in death by his parents, William and Elene Wagner; 
father-in-law, William “Buck” Weber; and brother-in-law, David Steinle.

Graveside memorial services will be on Saturday, April 8, 2023, 1:30 p.m. at the WaKeeney City Cemetery.

Thomas David Phillips, 66, of Russell, Kansas, was called Home to be 
with our Lord on Friday, March 24, 2023. By the grace of God, Tom lived
 58 years with a pacemaker (nearly the only person on this earth who can
 say that).&nbsp; He received his first pacemaker in 1966 when he was just 8 
years old.&nbsp; He grew up in in Royal Oak, Michigan, and then moved around a
 bit as an adult – living in Richmond, Virginia; Rochester, Minnesota; 
and finally settling in Russell, Kansas, 14 years ago.&nbsp;

Thomas was a very talented carpenter, creating beautiful furniture 
and cabinetry all of his life.&nbsp; He was a very hard worker, even with his
 life-long heart condition.&nbsp; His courage was incomparable.&nbsp; He loved 
history, was an avid reader, and was recently awarded a “Lifetime 
Achievement Medal” in the American Civil War Game Club. Of the 1,250 
Confederate members of The Club, only four men have reached this mark.&nbsp; 
Thomas earned this medal through many years of hard work and commitment 
to The Club – a remarkable achievement. &nbsp;But of course, playing Civil 
War games was by far his favorite hobby!&nbsp;

Thomas was the definition of an honorable man.&nbsp; He believed in 
feeding the magic because he believed in love.&nbsp; He lived life with a 
gentle spirit and a very loving heart.&nbsp; He met the love of his life, 
Laura Anne Hess of Russell, Kansas when he was 52. &nbsp;He was deeply in 
love with her, and she was deeply in love with him.&nbsp; They were best 
friends and partners in all the ups &amp; downs of life.

Most recently Thomas worked for PureField Ingredients (formerly White
 Energy) in Russell, Kansas.&nbsp; He was a reliable, dependable, 
extraordinary employee – working whenever they needed him, literally 
until the day he died.&nbsp; He had been looking forward to retiring in July.

Thomas is survived by his beloved partner, Laura Anne Hess of 
Russell, Kansas; his father, Robert Phillips of Ypsilanti, Michigan; 
sister April Shoemaker of Charlotte, North Carolina; sister Cheryl 
Levitt of Saginaw, Michigan; sister Denise (&amp; Craig) Frey of 
Rochester, Minnesota; and sister Sue (&amp; Art) Dorsey of Mount Vernon,
 Ohio. Thomas was preceded in death by his mother, Glenna (Abernethy) 
Phillips of Royal Oak, Michigan (also Rochester, Minnesota and Mount 
Vernon, Ohio) and brother, James Phillips of Clarkston, Michigan.&nbsp;

A private family memorial will be held at a later date.

Alice Marie Nicholson

Merrice Raye Brooks was a Valentine's baby born February 14, 1925,&nbsp; in Decatur County to Faye and Ida (Gallentine) Goodman and she passed 
away March 30, 2023, in Norton, KS at the age of 98.

Merrice grew 
up attending the local country school, The Gallentine School, for grades
 1-8 and graduating from Clayton High School. She walked to country 
school every day sometimes even in snow and dust storms. Merrice was an 
extremely bright child, even taking two grades in one year because she 
was academically advanced.

On August 12, 1942, Merrice married her
 high school sweetheart Weldon Brooks in Salt Lake City, Utah where they
 lived briefly before moving back to Norton when Weldon left for service
 in World War II.  They farmed and raised livestock in Clayton for the 
remainder of their married life before they retired and moved into 
Norton and later to an assisted living facility.

Being married to a
 farmer for 76 years required faith, perseverance, and grit. Merrice 
worked as hard as anyone including laboring in the fields, driving 
tractor and truck, changing water, hauling grain, and milking cows. In 
her job of making and delivering meals to the field for farm hands and 
her family, she became well known as an excellent cook, making nearly 
everything from scratch and always with love.

In addition to being
 a farmer’s wife and mother of three, she was also very active in the 
Clayton United Methodist Church, serving as a Sunday School Teacher and 
Treasurer as well as helping organize countless church dinners and 
events. She was famous for her chocolate cakes which were a sought-after
 item at every church bazaar. Merrice also served the community as a 
member of the American Legion Ladies Auxiliary and was a proud Gold Star
 mother. She served on the FHA Board to approve loans for farmers, was a
 cooking leader for the Prairie Dog 4-H Club, and drove students for 
school activities including field trips and required vaccinations. She 
was a longtime member of the LD Club, a ladies social club, who 
organized civic service projects and provided local scholarships. 


Merrice was an avid singles and couples card player and mastered such 
games as bridge, pitch, pinochle, and canasta. She will be lovingly 
remembered by all for her love of family, the color red, her unwavering 
positive attitude, and quiet grace.

Merrice was preceded in death 
by her parents, brother, husband, son Bart Brooks, and daughter-in-law 
Gail Brooks. She is survived by her son, Bill Brooks of Norton; 
daughter, Barbara (Don) Kelly of Lawrence, KS; brother-in-law Dale 
(Virginia) Brooks; five grandchildren, Steve Brooks, Sammye (Todd) 
Strickler, Bart (Cheri) Brooks, Angie (Brent) Schniers, and Kara (Eric) 
Huffman; 13 great grandchildren; 2 great great grandchildren; other 
relatives and many friends.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30
 am Saturday, April 8th, at the United Methodist Church in Clayton. 
Interment will follow at the Clayton Cemetery. Visitation will be from 
1-7:00 pm Friday, April 7th, at the funeral home with the family 
greeting friends form 5-7:00 pm.

Joyce L. Nemechek, 92, passed away at the Greeley County Long Term Care on Thursday, March 2, 2023, in Tribune, Kansas.

She was born on February 5, 1931, in Horace, Kansas, to parents 
Herman and Iva Rae Smith, who preceded her in death. She married Bernard
 (Bernie) Nemechek on May 22, 1948, in Sharon Springs, Kansas.

Joyce is survived by her children Trudy and John Thorburn, Buffalo, 
Wyoming; Brent and Beth Nemechek, Garden City, Kansas, and Blake and 
Carmelle Nemechek, Colorado Springs, Colorado; seven grandchildren, Ryan
 and Nicole Thorburn, Jenna Thorburn, Amy and Pete Michalczyk, Rhett 
Thorburn, Nick and Jenifer Nemechek, Andrew Nemechek, Cody Nemechek, and
 great-grandchildren Madelyn, Gabrielle, Addison, Hayden, Payton, Rylee,
 Harper and Hadley. Husband Bernie and sisters Margaret Shacklett, Lee 
Kimball, Jean Cobb, and Wanda Vester, and brothers Herman Smith Jr. and 
Eldon Smith preceded her in death.

Joyce and Bernie owned and operated Southside Service in Tribune, 
Kansas, for many years and retired to Sun City, Ariona. Joyce was an 
avid golfer and enjoyed a hole-in-one in her 80s. She loved spending 
time with her grandchildren teaching them to play golf and tennis. Joyce
 and Bernie moved back to Tribune in 2012 due to declining health. She 
and Bernie were faithful members of the United Methodist Church in 
Tribune and Sun City. They loved their faith, their family, and each 
other. With her passing, Bernie and Joyce are reunited to celebrate 
their faith and love in the heavens above.

Joyce L. Nemechek

Joyce Marie Thompson (Gore) passed away on Saturday April 1, 2023, at
 Prairie Sunset Home in Pretty Prairie, Kansas. Joyce was a loving wife,
 mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She passed away at the age 
of 89 after battling Dementia for the past 14 years. 

Joyce was born on 
February 12, 1934, in Tuskahoma, Oklahoma, to Ulysses S. Young and Lennie
 Audie (Haynes) Young. She came from a large family with five brothers: 
Cecil Young, Melvin Young, Selbert Young, James Young, Tom Young, and 
two sisters: Bernice Calhoun, and Nita Melick. Her family remained in 
Oklahoma during her early years and eventually moved to El Dorado, Kansas,&nbsp; a few years after her mother died when Joyce was 8 years old. She 
attended school in El Dorado and later met the love of her life, Alvin 
Keith Gore. They married on January 16, 1953, and together they raised a
 family of four children: Steven, Dianna, Monte, and Gayla.

Joyce
 was a Christian and had an infectious smile and warm heart. She was 
indeed a caregiver and always looked for the best in everyone she met. 
She adored her grandchildren and great-grandchildren immensely. She 
loved the smell and beauty of flowers and enjoyed listening to music and
 singing hymns that she learned as a young child. Chocolate was her 
guilty pleasure.

Joyce was always determined to succeed
 in everything she did. Her work outside the home included positions as a
 terminal manager for Morgan Drive Away in Plainville, KS, a clerk for 
the Barton County Treasurer’s Office in Great Bend, KS, and co-owner and
 office manager for Gore Trucking in Plainville, KS until she retired.

Joyce
 was preceded in death by her mother and father, her in-laws, her five 
brothers, sister Bernice, her husband Alvin Gore, daughter Dianna Mock, 
her second husband Alan Thompson, granddaughter Danielle Gore, infant 
grandson Brett Gore, and infant great-granddaughter Zavery Gore.

She
 is survived by her sons Steven Gore Sr. and wife LuAnn of Palmyra, PA 
and Monte Gore of Bainbridge, PA; son-in-law Phillip Mock of OKC, OK; 
daughter Gayla Puthoff and husband Fred of Wichita, KS; sister Nita 
Melick and husband John of Mulvane, KS; and thirteen grandchildren and 
nineteen great-grandchildren along with numerous nieces and nephews.

Celebration
 of life services are planned for 10:30 a.m. Thursday, April 6, 2023, at 
the First Christian Church in Plainville.  Burial will follow in 
Plainville City Cemetery.  Visitation will be from 4:00 p.m. until 8:00 
p.m. at the funeral home home.

 </figure>Joyce Marie Thompson (Gore) passed away on Saturday April 1, 2023, at
 Prairie Sunset Home in Pretty Prairie, Kansas. Joyce was a loving wife,
 mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She passed away at the age 
of 89 after battling Dementia for the past 14 years. Joyce was born on 
February 12, 1934, in Tuskahoma, Oklahoma, to Ulysses S. Young and Lennie
 Audie (Haynes) Young. She came from a large family with five brothers: 
Cecil Young, Melvin Young, Selbert Young, James Young, Tom Young, and 
two sisters: Bernice Calhoun, and Nita Melick. Her family remained in 
Oklahoma during her early years and eventually moved to El Dorado, Kansas,&nbsp; a few years after her mother died when Joyce was 8 years old. She 
attended school in El Dorado and later met the love of her life, Alvin 
Keith Gore. They married on January 16, 1953, and together they raised a
 family of four children: Steven, Dianna, Monte, and Gayla.Joyce
 was a Christian and had an infectious smile and warm heart. She was 
indeed a caregiver and always looked for the best in everyone she met. 
She adored her grandchildren and great-grandchildren immensely. She 
loved the smell and beauty of flowers and enjoyed listening to music and
 singing hymns that she learned as a young child. Chocolate was her 
guilty pleasure.Joyce was always determined to succeed
 in everything she did. Her work outside the home included positions as a
 terminal manager for Morgan Drive Away in Plainville, KS, a clerk for 
the Barton County Treasurer’s Office in Great Bend, KS, and co-owner and
 office manager for Gore Trucking in Plainville, KS until she retired.Joyce
 was preceded in death by her mother and father, her in-laws, her five 
brothers, sister Bernice, her husband Alvin Gore, daughter Dianna Mock, 
her second husband Alan Thompson, granddaughter Danielle Gore, infant 
grandson Brett Gore, and infant great-granddaughter Zavery Gore.She
 is survived by her sons Steven Gore Sr. and wife LuAnn of Palmyra, PA 
and Monte Gore of Bainbridge, PA; son-in-law Phillip Mock of OKC, OK; 
daughter Gayla Puthoff and husband Fred of Wichita, KS; sister Nita 
Melick and husband John of Mulvane, KS; and thirteen grandchildren and 
nineteen great-grandchildren along with numerous nieces and nephews.Celebration
 of life services are planned for 10:30 a.m. Thursday, April 6, 2023, at 
the First Christian Church in Plainville. Burial will follow in 
Plainville City Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4:00 p.m. until 8:00 
p.m. at the funeral home home.Memorials are suggested

Sylvester Tryon “Bus” Hartnett of Wichita, Kansas, passed away on 
March 21, 2023, at Wesley Medical Center, in Wichita, Kansas, at the age
 of 86.  He was born on December 30, 1936, to Bluford Andrew “B.A.” Sr., and Lucy Helen (Welch) Hartnett, in Mullinville, Kansas.

Bus
 graduated from Plainville High School.  He was the quarterback of the 
Cardinal football team when they won the championship in 1953, and the 
Cardinals accomplished a 38-game winning streak in the early ’50s. Bus 
was also awarded the Leon Bair trophy as an outstanding senior player 
and sportsman.

Bus married Berneitta McCormack, July 5, 1956.

Bus
 graduated from Kansas University with a Bachelor of Science in Physical
 Therapy. His career included hospitals, nursing homes, in-home, and 
private practice and spanned more than 40 years.

Bus 
enjoyed woodworking.  He was a past member of the Woodworkers Guild.  He
 also spent countless hours fixing, repairing, reclaiming, mowing, and 
other upkeep and projects connected to his and Berneitta’s homes and 
properties.

Bus passed his athletic ability and love of sports to his daughters. The girls were all good athletes. Bus did some coaching.

 is survived by:  his wife, Berneitta of Wichita; three daughters, 
Jennifer Lynne Hartnett-Henderson  (Paul), Mountain View, California, 
Lisa Kaye Warren (Paul), Valley Center, Kansas, Barbara Diane Rands  
(Brett), Oak Ridge, North Carolina; sister-in-law, Gayla Hartnett, 
Bakersfield, CA;  two grandsons, Cameron Richard Rands, and Morgan Reese
 Rands.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Bluford Andrew,

Lynette Gae Eaton, 67, passed away peacefully at home on March 28, 
2023, in Olathe, Kansas. She bravely fought her battle with cancer for 26
 years.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday,
 April 8, at 3:00pm with visitation following until 5:00pm in Garrett 
Chapel, College Church of the Nazarene, 2020 East Sheridan Street, 
Olathe, KS. Burial will take place on Monday, April 10 at 11:00am at 
Green Mound Cemetery, rural Palco, KS.

Lynette was born
 on January 16, 1956, in Mohall, ND to Melvin and Cora (Bonness) Aune. 
She grew up on the family farm outside of Mohall. She was a 1974 
graduate of Mohall High School. In 1978, she graduated from Mid-America 
Nazarene University, Olathe, KS with a B.A. degree in Music Education 
and Music Performance. She completed her M.M. degree in Music from Fort 
Hays State University, Hays, KS, in 1991.

Lynette 
exchanged wedding vows with Dale Eaton on July 8, 1978, in Minot, ND. 
They lived in Larned, KS and Altamont, KS before settling in Olathe, KS 
in 1982.

Over her teaching career, Lynette taught 
elementary music in Oswego, KS for two years, and the Kansas City, KS 
school district for 29 years, eventually retiring in 2011. During the 
last 10 years of her teaching career, in addition to teaching elementary
 music, she also taught reading. At Claude Huyck Elementary School in 
Kansas City, she was awarded Teacher of the Year in 2002 and Star 
Teacher Award in 2009. She was also the recipient of the Kansas Music 
Educators Association Northeast District Vocal Music Teacher of the 
Year.

Lynette began studying piano at an early age and 
over the years accompanied many soloists and vocal ensembles for school 
performances as well as for weddings, church services and special 
events. She developed a passion for playing the French horn while in 
high school, and continued her horn studies while in college. For over 
25 years, she performed regularly with the Kansas City Civic Orchestra, 
the Overland Park Orchestra, the Olathe Community Orchestra and the 
Festival Brass Quintet. Lynette was a member of College Church of the 
Nazarene and sang with Children of Light and was a member of the 
sanctuary orchestra.

Her favorite activities were 
attending the Kansas City Lyric Opera, listening to jazz on the Plaza, 
being the family historian, and following the Royals, Chiefs, KU 
Basketball and K State football.

Survivors include her 
husband of 44 years, Dale; her sister, Mavis Kallestad (Leigh), Wayzata,
 MN and many Aune and Bonness cousins; Mother-in-law, Mary (Towns) 
Eaton, Palco, KS; Brother-in-law, Don Eaton, Olathe, KS; Aunts Wilda 
(Eaton) Aubrey, Bethany, OK, and Shirley (Towns) Burr, Elba, AL; Nieces 
and nephews Britney (Scott) Rice, Olathe, KS; Caleb (Sarah) Eaton, 
Leadville, CO; Joshua (Tiffany) Eaton, Arlington, TX; Darci (Eric) 
Kimmerling, Henderson, TN; Matthew (Deborah) Eaton, Holt, MI; and many 
cousins-in-law, great nieces and nephews.

She was 
preceded in death by her parents, Father-in-law, Joseph Eaton, 
Brother-in-law, Dan Eaton, and many aunts, uncles and cousins.

Lynette Gae Eaton

David J. Brull, 67, passed away Sunday, March 26, 2023, at his home in 
Fort Collins. He was diagnosed with a brain tumor in 2020. 
Dave was born July 5, 1955, in Hays, Kansas, to Francis and Pia 
(Wasinger) Brull. He graduated from Hays High School and attended Fort 
Hays State University for several years. He married Janet Papenfus on 
August 18, 1990, in Golden, Colorado. A talented musician, Dave
 was happiest behind a keyboard playing music with his friends. He 
parlayed his talent into a music-centric career in radio, music 
equipment sales, and, most recently, theater performance production. 
 Dave had an incredible knack for fully appreciating life’s simple 
pleasures. He found any excuse to spend time in the Colorado sunshine, 
whether that meant camping, biking, or barbecuing his world-famous ribs.
 Preferably these activities occurred in the presence of his family, 
whom he adored above all else. He is survived by his wife, Janet; children, Gabriel and Amelia; and brothers, Randy (Carol) and Bernie. 
 A celebration of life will be held at 12:00 pm on Saturday, April 8, 
2023 ,at the Lake Sherwood Neighborhood Clubhouse: 2700 Silver Creek Drive,

David J. Brull

Goodland, KS resident Theodore "Ted" Harold Swayne, 86, passed away 
after a long illness at Goodland Regional Medical Center on March 31, 
2023.

Ted was born on December 1, 1936, NE of Kanorado to Henry Franklin 
Swayne Sr. and Wilma Ethel (Doggett) Swayne.&nbsp; He was one of 7children.&nbsp; 
He attended school in Kanorado, KS and graduated Kanorado High School in
 1955.

Ted married Gertrude Leona Schritter January 25, 1955, in Clayton, 
New Mexico.&nbsp; Following their marriage, they lived in Cozad, Nebraska, 
Monticello, Utah, Cortez, Aztec and Farmington, New Mexico, before 
returning to Kansas in 1961.&nbsp; After moving to Goodland, Kansas, Ted was 
self-employed building aluminum awnings and carports in the area before 
moving to Kanorado, Kansas, to manage the Kanorado Co-op Lumber Yard for 
several years before going to work with the Kanorado School District as 
Custodian and School Bus Driver.&nbsp; His dream was to be a farmer.&nbsp; In 1974
 he had the opportunity to start farming. He retired from farming when 
he turned 80. &nbsp;&nbsp;

Ted was extremely involved coaching little league baseball when his 
sons were growing up.&nbsp; Some years he coached 3 different teams that each
 had 1 to 2 games per week.&nbsp; He bowled on a mixed bowling league with 
his wife Gert for years.&nbsp; He enjoyed an occasional trip to Blackhawk 
Colorado (which he referred to as going up the mountain) for some 
leisure entertainment. He enjoyed watching and following the Denver 
Broncos Football and the Colorado Rockies Baseball teams. Ted was a 
member of the BPOE Elks in Goodland, Kansas for over 50 years. Ted loved
 his family.&nbsp; He enjoyed county fairs, music shows, pitching horseshoes 
and parades (several years ago he and Gert were the Grand Marshals in 
the Kanorado Day Parade).

Surviving family includes his wife Gertrude Swayne of Goodland, 
Kansas, two sons Marlyn Swayne (Brenda) of Hays, Kansas, Marvin Swayne 
(Cindy) of Wichita, Kansas, and one daughter Marlene (Brad) Vickrey of 
McPherson, Kansas; three grandchildren, Michelle (Spencer) Goff, Shannon
 (Dusty) Swayne, Ryan (Elizabeth) Swayne; four great grandchildren, 
Mason and Aeris Goff, Jackson and Emry Swayne, and one Brother Dee 
(Bonnie) Swayne.

Theodore 'Ted' Harold Swayne

Carolyn J. Hertel, 86, died Thursday, March 30, 2023, at The Ranch House
 in Garden City, Kansas. She was born August 30, 1936, in Larned, 
Kansas, the daughter of Dee &amp; Isabel (Shasteen) Klein. 
 Carolyn grew up with her family on a farm East of Hanston, Kansas. 
 She attended schools in Burdett and Hanston and graduated from Hanston 
High School in 1954. She then attended nurses training in Great Bend, 
Kansas. Carolyn worked for a short time at a nurse’s aide and 
receptionist at St. Joseph Hospital in Larned. On May 11, 1956, she 
married Harold J. Hertel in Hanston, Kansas. They have lived in Garden 
City since. Carolyn worked for 35 years at Fidelity State Bank as a 
teller and assistant cashier before retiring as a Vice President in the 
mid 1990’s. 
 Carolyn was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church in Garden City and
 was a past President of the Kansas Women’s Banking Association. She

 </figure>Carolyn J. Hertel, 86, died Thursday, March 30, 2023, at The Ranch House
 in Garden City, Kansas. She was born August 30, 1936, in Larned, 
Kansas, the daughter of Dee &amp; Isabel (Shasteen) Klein. 
 Carolyn grew up with her family on a farm East of Hanston, Kansas. 
 She attended schools in Burdett and Hanston and graduated from Hanston 
High School in 1954. She then attended nurses training in Great Bend, 
Kansas. Carolyn worked for a short time at a nurse’s aide and 
receptionist at St. Joseph Hospital in Larned. On May 11, 1956, she 
married Harold J. Hertel in Hanston, Kansas. They have lived in Garden 
City since. Carolyn worked for 35 years at Fidelity State Bank as a 
teller and assistant cashier before retiring as a Vice President in the 
mid 1990’s. 
 Carolyn was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church in Garden City and
 was a past President of the Kansas Women’s Banking Association. She 
enjoyed spending her time traveling with her husband Harold, reading,

Carolyn J. Hertel

Daniel T Newbrey went over the rainbow bridge on March 31st 2023. He 
was born on January 13, 1941 in Smith Center, Kansas to Cathern 
(Auldrich) &amp; Edward Newbrey.  He was a member of United Church of 
Kensington serving as a deacon and was on the Board of Trustees. He was 
baptised as a teenager.

He lived 82 years on the farm and settled 
his own place 3 miles from where he grew up. Many friends and cousins 
brought fun and oneryness  to his childhood.  He was a big help on the 
family farm planting crops &amp; raising cattle.

Danny went to 
school in Claudell, Cedar and Kensington Kansas. He was actively 
involved in 4-H and he enjoyed sports as a Goldbug lettering in 
football, basketball, track &amp; baseball. 4-H camp was where his 
classmate Sharilyn Reagan caught his eye.  The young couple were married
 September 12th 1959 at the Methodist Church in Kensington and they 
moved to the farm south of Claudell. Danny started growing his cattle 
herd and farming the ground. They were blessed with three daughters - 
Connie, Cristi &amp; Annette. The girls have fun memories of growing up 
and "helping" on the farm with their high spirited Dad. Family trips 
were taken west to Colorado &amp; Yellowstone. They liked going to 
county fairs, horse shows &amp; watching country music artists. The 
girls were involved in 4-H so Danny &amp; Sherry were too! Dad tamed 
steers,  saddled horses &amp; corralled hogs for his daughters. He also 
gave out hugs and wiped many tears. The farm was active with chickens 
&amp; ducks &amp; dogs &amp; cats. 

Dan was very proud of his girls when 
they became involved in sports &amp; did his best to teach them. He even
 put up with the cheerleading and homecoming queens and the boys that 
came along. Connie married Roger Kahrs &amp; moved to Nebraska; Cristi 
married Kenny Sowers &amp; moved to El Dorado Kansas; Annette moved to 
Tennesse &amp; met Tim Riley. The Rileys married and moved to Texas and 
then back to Kansas to Danny's childhood home.  Danny and Sherry loved 
traveling to visit them in Texas, Tennessee, Nebraska, and El Dorado,&nbsp; Kansas. They also enjoyed visiting with family in St Francis &amp; 
Kansas City. Branson Missouri was a fun destination that they traveled 
to several times.

They were blessed with 10 Grandchildren and time
 was spent with each of them, loving them dearly. They were also blessed
 with 12 Great Grandchildren and Danny was sure to hold each baby!  Dan 
was soft hearted for each cow, calf, kitten, horse &amp; chicken. He had
 several dogs in his life that he loved with his whole heart. As he got 
older, the comfort of a little doggie was perfect.

Danny was 
preceded in death by his parents, Edward &amp; Cathern Newbrey and twin 
angel great grandbabies, Emmit &amp; Elizabeth Kahrs. He is survived by 
his devoted wife Sherry, daughters Connie (Roger) Kahrs, Cristi (Kenny) 
Sowers, &amp; Annette (Tim) Riley. Grandchildren Brittany (Justin) 
Marks, Kelen (Rebecca) Kahrs, Ethan (Ashley) Kahrs, Kelsi (Kelyn) 
Pohlman, Carson Sowers, Kincade Sowers, Krista (Matt) McLeod, Lauren 
(TJ) Bowen, Danielle (Brayton) Gillen, &amp; Matilyn Riley. Great

Ross W. Wagner, 77, passed away on March 31, 2023, at his home in 
WaKeeney, Kansas.&nbsp; He was born on September 7, 1945, in Hays, KS the son 
of William and Elene (Moden) Wagner.

Calvin Leroy “Trapper” Calp, 75, passed away on March 31, 2023, at 
Clara Barton Hospital, Hoisington, Kan. He was born on May 27, 1947, in 
Baltimore, Maryland, to Austin and Lillian (Tuzicka) Calp. In 1981, he 
married Elizabeth Myers-Springer in Great Bend, Kan. She survives.

A lifelong area resident, Calvin owned and operated Calp Furs. He 
also worked as a bartender at Slack's. In his spare time, he enjoyed 
riding motorcycles in his young years. Calvin was an outstanding trapper
 and fisherman, and was revered by many in the areas.

Survivors include his wife of the home; a son, Calvin Calp Jr. and 
significant other, Tracey, of Salina, Kan.; a daughter, Carrie Holland 
of Tennessee; eight grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren; a half 
sister, Betty Puckett of Texas; a half brother, Alvin Brazda of Las 
Vegas, Nev.; and a stepson Leonard Mumford and significant other, 
Jozette. He is preceded in death by his parents; and a brother, Charles 
“Charley” Calp.

Visitation will take place noon to 8:00 p.m. on Tuesday, April 4, 
2023, with family receiving guests from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., at 
Bryant Funeral Home. Funeral service will take place at 1:00 p.m. 
Wednesday, April 5, 2023, at Encounter Church, 601 S. Patton Road, with 
Pastor Dwight Dozier presiding. Interment will follow at St. Ann

Calvin Leroy 'Trapper' Calp

Thomas “Tom” Meridith Wasinger,72, formerly of Ellis, Kansas, passed 
away Wednesday, March 22, 2023, of a heart attack at his home in 
Lawrence.&nbsp;

Tom was born at St. Anthony’s Hospital on October 28, 1950. He was a 
graduate of St. Joseph’s Military Academy, now known as Thomas More 
Prep-Marian in Hays.&nbsp; Upon graduation, Tom enlisted in the U.S. Navy.&nbsp; 
He was very proud of his service and had fond memories of serving his 
country.

After returning to Ellis, Tom resumed the activities he had grown to 
love, boating, water skiing, and fishing.&nbsp; Tom discovered his talent for
 driving and operating large trucks and worked for Arrow Trucking and 
later Keller Brothers Inc. in Ellis.&nbsp;

In retirement, he moved to Lawrence to be closer to family.&nbsp;

He enjoyed watching and supporting his favorite sporting teams, the 
KC Royals, the KU Jayhawks, and the Kansas City Chiefs.&nbsp; Tom also 
liked going to the casinos with his uncle.&nbsp;

He was preceded in death by his father, Meridith, a brother, Michael, and his brother-in-law, Dan Heath.

Tom is survived by his mother, Agnes (Nitzie) Rupp Wasinger of 
Lawrence, a sister, Mary Jo Heath, Lawrence, nephew, Kevin Heath, wife, 
Meagan, children, Alexandra, Owen, and Lily, of Dublin, Ireland and 
Tom’s niece, Elizabeth Heath of Lawrence and many extended relatives and
 friends.

A Memorial Mass will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, April 12,

Thomas 'Tom' Meridith Wasinger

Harold Carson Holland, elder son of Harold Ray and Florence Rebecca 
(Carson) Holland was born September 20, 1934, in Lincoln, Nebraska, and 
departed this earth life on March 29, 2023, at the age of 88 in Richmond,
 Kansas.&nbsp;

Harold grew up on the family farm in Southern Jefferson County, 
Nebraska graduating from a one room country school in 1948.&nbsp; He attended
 and graduated from Fairbury, NE High School with Honors in 1952. His 
secondary education included Nebraska Wesleyan University, Lincoln, NE 
and a Bachelor’s Degree from Houghton College, Houghton, NY in 1956.&nbsp; 
Harold also graduated with a Master’s Degree from the University of 
Nebraska, Lincoln.&nbsp; As an Ordained Pastor, he attended Asbury Theological
 Seminary, Kentucky and graduated from the Candler School of Theology, 
Emory University, Atlanta, GA.

Harold was united in marriage with Mary Alice Heimer, Gypsum, KS in 
1962.&nbsp; To this Union, three sons were born, Bruce, Brian and Brent.&nbsp; As 
an avid sports enthusiast, Harold followed his sons’ and grandchildren’s
 sports and other school activities with great interest.

Harold fulfilled God’s Calling upon his life as a Pastor in one 
Nebraska County and five Kansas Counties.&nbsp; After early retirement, 
Harold was employed in Retail and Insurance.&nbsp; Harold, Mary and their 
challenged son, Brent, moved to Ottawa, KS in 2006.

Harold, or Hal, as he was often called in later life, is survived by 
his wife of sixty anniversaries, of the home; three sons, Bruce, Denver,
 CO, Brian and his wife, Karen, Overland Park, and Brent, Ottawa; five 
grandchildren, Reed, Knoxville, TN, Caitlin and her husband Kyle, 
Denver, CO, Blake, Overland Park, Riley, Alamosa, CO and Kenzie, 
Overland Park; his brother, Cecil and his wife, DeAnna, Filley, NE; 
several nieces and nephews; other family members and friends in the USA,
 the UK, Sweden and Ireland.

A funeral service will be held 11:00 a.m. Friday, April 7, 2023, at 
the Westminster Presbyterian Church, 401 W. 13th Street, Ottawa, KS 
66067.&nbsp; Graveside service and Interment will be held at 2:30 p.m. at the
 Floral Hills Cemetery, 7000 Blue Ridge Blvd., Kansas City, MO 64133. 
The family will receive friends 10 a.m. before the service hour at the 
Church. ]

Vivian Kaye Ribbing Cronin, age 72, peacefully passed in Lakin, 
Kansas, March 30, 2023, surrounded by loved ones after her battle with 
cancer to be with the Lord Jesus of her life. She was born, January 17, 
1951, at Dumas, Texas, the daughter of Eugene &amp; Geraldine Oxford 
Ribbing.

Kaye was a homemaker, mother, grandmother, and friend to many. She 
spent a good share of her life in Garden City and Pierceville, Kansas, 
and lived in Questa, New Mexico for 10 years. While working at the 
college in Garden City, she earned her Associates degree. She was a 
member of the Cornerstone Church in Garden City, Kansas and volunteered 
for missions.

She married Marvin D. Cronin on July 18, 1970, and divorced; he is 
deceased. She married Brad J. Allen on June 23, 2005, they divorced; he 
survives.

Survivors include her sons, Matthew Dale Cronin &amp; Margie Jackson 
of Liberal, Kansas, Mark Duane &amp; Nikki Cronin of Lovington, New 
Mexico, granddaughters Shaylee Wherley of Lovington, New Mexico, Amber 
Wallis of Rockport, Texas, Laney Wallis of Rockport, Texas, her brother 
and sisters - Ellen &amp; Ellis Hahn of Lakin, Kansas, Darrel Ribbing of
 Ashland, Kansas, Pat &amp; Billie Swilley of Scott City, Kansas, 
Sister-in-law Marlene Ribbing of Leoti, Kansas, her friend &amp;

Edwin Jay “Ed” Carleton, 93, of Denison, Kansas, passed away Wednesday, February 1, 2023. 
He was born December 20, 1929, in Coldwater, Kansas, the son of James&nbsp;W.
 and Anna (Taylor) Carleton. He was a graduate of Coldwater High School 
and attended Kansas State University. 
Ed was employed by the&nbsp;Rock Island&nbsp;Railroad for many years&nbsp;and then the Kyle Railroad, until retiring. 
He was a member of Elks Lodge #1528, Lions Club of Goodland, Kansas,&nbsp; and&nbsp;a volunteer with the&nbsp;Sherman County&nbsp;Fair Board. He was also a former
 Councilman and previously served as Mayor of Goodland. 
Ed married Bonnie Walker on December 20, 1950 at Goodland KS. She 
preceded him in death on April 12, 2010.

Survivors include two 
daughters, Marcia C. Budge of Conroe, TX and Mona J.&nbsp;(Larry) Werner of 
Claremore, OK;&nbsp;4&nbsp;grandchildren,&nbsp;Steve (Cheryl) Budge, Tara Werner, Wes 
(Sarah) Werner and Wendy (Trent) Winings; 12 great-grandchildren, 
Brayden Stirman, Anne Budge, Abigail Budge, Hannah Deegan, Shea Deegan,

Edwin Jay 'Ed' Carleton

Alvin Louis Burk, 71, of Norton, KS passed away March 29, 2023, at his
 home. He was born February 10, 1952, in St. Louis, MO to Albert Louis 
and Antoinette (Cracchiola) Burk.

Alvin grew up in St. Louis, MO 
and Omaha, NE, where he graduated from high school in 1970. After high 
school, he joined the United States Navy and served for over 30 years. 
Alvin married Barbara Whitaker on March 24, 1984 in San Diego, CA. They 
moved to Denver, CO for a Navy recruiting job and then he retired in 
1997 as a Petty Officer First Class. He went on to work for Subaru as a 
delivery driver until they moved to Norton in 2008. While in Norton, he 
worked as a janitor for the Northern Valley School District. Even though
 he was “retired,” he was always working hard, whether it was one of his 
jobs or one of his favorite pastimes, vegetable gardening. Every year he
 would sell vegetable plants. Alvin moved to this area because of his 
love for fishing.

Alvin was preceded in death by his parents; two 
brothers, and one sister. He is survived by his wife, Barbara of the 
home; sons: Abraham Burk of Norton, KS, Lee (Cynthia) Burk of San Diego,
 CA, Steven (Amber) Burk of Brighton, CO, and Robert Burk of Cumberland,
 MD; daughter, Kendra Burk of Norton, KS and eight grandchildren.

The
 family has chosen cremation and a Celebration of Life Gathering will be
 held from 4-6:00 pm Wednesday, April 5, 2023, at the funeral home.

David L. Mull, 64, passed away March 31, 2023, at Hospice House in 
Hutchinson, Kan. He was born and raised on a farm north of Pawnee Rock, 
Kan. on November 23, 1958, in Great Bend to Charles &amp; Mary Ann 
(Merten) Mull. He later moved to Great Bend and graduated from Great 
Bend High School and attended automotive classes at Barton Community 
College. He married Sandy Miller in 1980, in Great Bend.

David farmed and owned Mull Landscaping before later working for 
Lance, Inc., Harkers Distribution, and then retiring from Frito Lay in 
2016. David was a past member of the Great Bend Co-op, Noon Lions Club, 
Elks Club, and Board of Directors of Barton Farm Bureau. He enjoyed 
muscle cars, driving anywhere, working in the yard, KC Chiefs football, 
overnight trips, and his dog Roxy.

Survivors include, his wife, Sandy of 42 years of the home; a son, 
Marcus Mull of Great Bend; a brother, Robert Mull of Seattle, Wash.; a 
sister, Emily Ferri and husband Joe of Colorado Springs, Colo.; and 
special friends, Larry Lancaster, Ralph Reichuber and Leon Haselhorst. 
He was preceded in death by his parents, Charles and Mary Ann Mull.

There will be no visitation as cremation has taken place and funeral 
services will be held at a later date.

Leonard "Swede" Swanson, age 89, of Curtis, Nebraska passed away on March 27, 2023, at his home in Curtis.

Leonard was born on January 5, 1934, in Moorefield, Nebraska, the son
 of Lawrence and Una Marie (Lierman) Swanson.&nbsp; Leonard lived south of 
Curtis until 1946, and then moved north of Curtis where he lived the 
rest of his life.

Leonard attended Fox Creek School and 
graduated from UNSA in 1956.&nbsp; His position on the football team was End,
 where he scored many points for the Aggies, which was his joy.

He married Dixie Trosper in 1953.&nbsp; Four years later he was called into 
service with the US Army, where he served in Korea for 11 months and was
 inactive two years before being honorable discharged.&nbsp; He then came 
back to farm and raise Angus bulls, irrigated corn and Quarter horses.&nbsp; 
After he stopped farming, he worked various jobs until retirement.&nbsp; 
Leonard was known as a hard worker who was determined to get the job 
done.

He was a member of the Curtis Berean Church, where he 
helped to start the Awana program.&nbsp; He was instrumental in leading a 
number of children to Christ.&nbsp; He served on the District 75 School Board
 and was a member of the Angus Association and Quarter Horse 
Association.

Left to cherish his memory, are his wife, Dixie 
Swanson of Curtis, NE; daughter, Lorri (Henry) Martin; son, Terry (Kim) 
Swanson; brother, Rodney (Marilyn) Swanson of Cozad, NE; four grandsons,
 Nathanial (Jenna) Martin of Hutchinson, KS, Wesley (Shelby) Martin of 
Hays, KS, Tyler (Kaely) Martin of Herndon, KS, and Joshua (Erin) Swanson
 of Hendersonville, TN; two granddaughters, Kira (Aaron) Austin of 
Whitehouse, TN and Kinsley (Doug) Ramey of Greenbrier, TN; and nine 
great-grandchildren.

Leonard was preceded in death by his

April 3, 2023 at 2:00 p.m. with Brian Nicklas officiating.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Ryan Neil “Boonie” Kleweno, 48, passed away on March 22, 2023, at Via
 Christi St. Francis Hospital, Wichita, Kan. He was born on May 10, 
1974, in Ransom, Kan., to Donald “Donnie” and Connie (Gross) Kleweno.

Growing
 up in La Crosse and Bazine, and later living in Hays and Great Bend, 
Ryan worked as a tile mechanic installing all types of flooring, along 
with different shop jobs. He was a free spirit, uninhibited, and went 
where life took him. Ryan was an animal lover and his passions included 
RC cars, riding ATVs and motorcycles. He especially loved spending time 
with family and friends. Ryan will be remembered for his good heart and 
willingness to give and help where he could.

Survivors include his
 son, Adam Kleweno of Henryetta, Okla.; two brothers, Lonnie (Pamela 
Venn) Kennedy of Charlotte, N.C., and Jason Kleweno of Columbia, Mo.; a 
niece, Nicole (Craig Sharp) Kennedy-Sharp of Wichita, Kan.; two nephews,
 Michael and Davey Kennedy, both of Wichita, Kan.; significant other, 
Laura Stevenson; co-parent, Andrea Strobel-Guynes; and four half 
sisters. He is preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Mark 
Kennedy; and grandparents, Adam and Helen Gross.

There will be no 
visitation as cremation has taken place. Funeral service will be held at
 10:00 a.m. Saturday, April 8, 2023, at Bryant Funeral Home with Pastor

 10:00 a.m. Saturday, April 8, 2023, at Bryant Funeral Home with Pastor 
Daniel Vandenburg presiding. Inurnment will follow at Hillcrest Memorial
 Park. Memorials have been designated to the American Cancer Society, in
 care of Bryant Funeral Home. The family wishes to make out of town 
guests aware that further fellowship will take place directly after 
funeral services, and that there is a block of rooms available at the 
Best Western Angus Inn.

Maxine (Archer) (Janne) Miller was born March 4, 1922.  Her parents were J.M. Archer and Emma (Bodmer) Archer.

She
 attended both grade school and high school in Waldo, KS.  After high 
school graduation, she completed her 1-year teaching certificate and 
began teaching.  She later obtained her BS and master’s degree 
(primarily from correspondence courses and varied classes) while raising
 four children.  Maxine’s teaching career spanned 33 years.  She taught 
in many country schools in the area, Luray Public Schools and Osborne 
schools.  During this time, she joined Delta Cappa Gamma, a teacher’s 
sorority &amp; was a past member of the Eastern Star.

On May 3, 
1942, Maxine Miller married Vernon Janne (from Luray) in Los Angeles, 
CA.  This union was blessed with four children: Ronald, Shirley, Marlyn 
and Emma.  Twenty-seven years later, her husband (Vernon) was killed 
while aerial spraying.  It was a sad time, and several years later in 
1997 Emma died in an automobile accident.

After the death of her 
husband, she married a friend from Osborne, Dale Miller.  Dale and 
Maxine were married 23 years.  They built the house on 3rd street where 
she lived.  Dale passed away in December 1993.

Maxine loved to 
travel and attended 2 world fairs.  Maxine and Dale shared a European 
trip visiting Holland, Germany, England, and France.  Maxine also 
visited her son’s family in Okinawa when Ron was stationed there in the 
Air Force.

In 1997, Maxine and neighbor, Wayne Knowles became life
 partners.  Maxine had retired from teaching.  Maxine and Wayne spent 
their winters in Truth or Consequences, NM.  They would drive to Phoenix
 to spend Thanksgiving with Maxine’s daughters (Shirley and Marlyn).  In
 2015, they sold their mobile home in T or C, and lived in Osborne 
year-round.  Sadly, that same year, Wayne passed away.

In March 
2015, shortly after Wayne passed, an unfortunate accident occurred.  
Maxine tried to close her screen door one night during a high wind and 
was blown off the back steps.  Although she broke her leg, with the help
 of her children, friends, and her tenacity and “can do” attitude, she 
learned to walk again.

She lived to attend both Ronald and 
Marlyn’s golden wedding celebrations in 2014.  She loved her 
grandchildren, great grandchildren, and her great great grandchildren.  
They were her joy!

She is survived be her son Ronald and wife 
Lynda; daughters Shirley Coad and Marlyn and husband Gerry Homewood. Ron
 and Lyndas children are Robert Janne and Ronda Jo Kogler.  Shirley’s 
children are Belinda and Matt Ratke and Kevin and Brooke Coad.  Marlyn 
and Gerry’s children are Troy and Rita Homewood and Gregg and fiancé 
Rothary Homewood.  Emma and Fred Wiese’s children are Sarah Wiese, 
Rachel and Randy Doriese and Ben &amp; Haley Wiese.  She has a total of 9
 grandchildren, 18 great grandchildren and 9 great great grandchildren.

There will be a celebration of Maxine’s life held on May 27, 2023, at the Osborne United Methodist church at 10:00AM.

The
 family has requested memorial contributions in lieu of flowers be made 
to the Osborne Senior Center C/O Barbara Wilson 108 W Main St Osborne, 
KS 67473.

Maxine Miller

After a brief and valiant fight with cancer, Toohey Joe "TJ" Allaman of Lakin, KS passed away peacefully surrounded by his wife, children and
 brother.&nbsp;

The son of Mickey Allaman and Dixie (Hobson) Myers, TJ was born June 
21, 1962, in Oakley, KS and died at Wesley Medical Center in Wichita, KS 
on March 26, 2023, at the age of 60.

He spent his earliest years growing up in Goodland, KS graduating 
from Goodland High School in 1980.&nbsp; Some of his most precious memories 
were at his grandparents in Wallace, KS. TJ enjoyed life, especially in 
the outdoors. Hunting and fishing were two of his favorite things. 
Passing these loves and stories on to his son and grandsons brought much
 happiness.&nbsp;

He married Toni Marie Cochrane on January 8, 1983, in Goodland, KS and
 proceeded with their family welcoming daughter, Lacey and son, Cole.&nbsp;

He was preceded in death by his parents Mickey Allaman and Dixie 
Myers. Paternal Grandparents Toohey and Thelma Allaman Wallace, KS and 
Maternal Grandparents Joe and Gladys Hobson, Sedalia, Co

Survivors include wife Toni of Lakin, KS daughter Lacey (Ty) 
Brookover of Garden City, KS son Cole (Tish) Allaman of Lakin, KS; 5 
wonderful grandsons Max, Miles and Forest Brookover and Paxton and 
Tipton Allaman and step grandson Lawson Weilert-Beymer, brother Mike 
(Robin) Allaman of Lakin, KS, sisters, Michelle (Paul) Simoneau of 
Goodland, KS and Natalie Allaman of Quincy, Michigan. As well as 
numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, aunts and uncles.

A Celebration of TJ's life will be April 15, 2023, at 11:00 AM CT 
Kearny County Fairgrounds in Lakin. There are no calling hours. A 
private family inurnment will take place at a later date at Fort Wallace 
Cemetery, Wallace, KS.
