Jolene “Jo” Marie Augustine (Giebler), 72, of WaKeeney, Kansas, a 
doting mother and grandmother, passed away on March 11, 2023, after a 
brief illness at Trego-Lemke Memorial Hospital.

She was born to the late Henrietta and Kilian Giebler on August 20, 
1950, in Hays, Kansas.&nbsp; She graduated from Hays High School. Later in 
life she went on to study at Fort Hays State University. She met her 
husband, David Augustine, while working at Travanol. They married on May
 26, 1972, and together, they had their son, Jason.

She was a homemaker, a bookkeeper, a sitter, a saleswoman, and a 
factory worker. Many knew her as a good friend. She loved reading, 
gardening, drawing, baking, cooking, and socializing.&nbsp; She would be on 
the phone with loved ones for hours, chatting.&nbsp; She was the favorite 
aunt of many nieces and nephews and made sure everyone was well-fed.

Due to her health issues, she moved to Trego County Lemke Memorial 
Hospital-Long Term Care, where she was lovingly cared for . Some of her 
favorite things at long term care over the almost three years that she 
was there was being able to spend time with her husband, who would greet
 her at around seven in the morning before he went to work at the 
hospital, having dinner and supper almost every night with him at the 
hospital, sharing Dairy Queen sundaes brought in by him on Sunday 
afternoons and watching the Kansas City Chiefs games with him.

Loved ones that cleared the path for Jolene were her late mother and 
father, Henrietta (Linenberger) and Kilian Giebler.&nbsp; Loved ones that 
will miss Jolene until they meet again are her husband, David Augustine;
 son Jason (Shannon) Augustine of Lake Ridge, Virginia; grandchildren, 
Jacob and Carina Augustine of Lake Ridge, Virginia; her brother Ivan 
(Arlene) Giebler; her sister Annette (Kirk) Voss, all of Hays, Kansas; 
three sisters’ and four brothers’ in-laws; and many nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at Schmitt Funeral Home, WaKeeney, KS 
on Tuesday, April 4, 2023, at 10:00AM. Visitation will be prior to the 
service from 9:00AM to 10:00AM. &nbsp;In lieu of flowers, the family requests

JoAnne Keller left this world on March 12, 2023, after living a long 
life of 90 years. She was born November 20, 1932, in Hays, KS, to Ralph 
Furbeck and Mary (Durgeloh) Furbeck. She was the only child. She was a 
lifetime resident of Ellis, KS, and graduated in 1950 from Ellis High 
School. On June 7, 1951, she married LeRoy “Bud” Keller. They divorced, 
and he preceded her in 2004.

JoAnne was a homemaker, a 
local Avon Representative, and a clerk at the Ellis Midwest Energy 
office. She enjoyed spending time volunteering her service in the Ellis 
community. She was a member of Alpha Rho, ESA sorority. Many hours were 
spent on the Christmas Star Committee, Arbor Tree Committee, organizing 
the painting of the Main Street sunflowers, and beautifying Memorial 
Park. She was a dedicated Ellis City Council Member and Walter P. 
Chrysler board member. One of her favorite pastimes was attending the 
May Day Mystery Tours around the United States. She was an avid sports 
fan with K-State being her favorite.

Survivors include 
two daughters, Joleen (Ray) Fisher, Hays and Pauleen (Tim) Edmonds, 
Ellis; a son, Gordon Keller, Ellis; five grandchildren, Jason Edmonds 
and partner Kodi Garrison, Ellis; Casey (Leigh Ann) Edmonds, R.J. 
(Aubrey) Fisher, Raleen (Chris) Grandy, all of Hays and Emily Edmonds, 
San Antonio, Texas; seven great-grandchildren, Georgia, Jett and Claire 
Edmonds, Braelyn and Braxton Grandy and Kasen Fisher all of Hays; and 
Taylor (Brandon) Schoenthaler, WaKeeney. Great-great grandson is Brock 
Schoenthaler, WaKeeney.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

Visitation will be Tuesday, March 14, 6:00-8:00 pm at Keithley Funeral Chapel, 400 E. 17th Ellis, KS 67637.

Private graveside services will be at Mount Hope Cemetery.

Darlene A. (Jacobs) Sander, age 88, of Hays, Kansas, passed away on Wednesday, March 8, 2023, at Hays Medical Center.

She was born March 15, 1934, in Pfeifer, Kansas, to Anthony and Regina (Jacobs) Jacobs. &nbsp;She married John J. Sander on April 16, 1955, in Pfeifer, Kansas. &nbsp;He preceded her in death on May 16, 2012.

Darlene grew up in Pfeifer.&nbsp;She was a member of Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church and a volunteer for many years at the Hays Community Assistance Center. &nbsp;Darlene enjoyed athletics as a young woman and continued her lifelong interest in exercise and staying active with almost twenty years in a water aerobics class where she met and became friends with many of her classmates. &nbsp; &nbsp;

Dennis Francis Flax, age 57, died on March 11, 2023, at his home in 
Ransom, Kansas.&nbsp; He was born on October 27, 1965, in Ransom, the son of 
Joseph and Mary Frances (Friess) Flax.

Dennis was a member of the St. Aloysius Church and the Knights of 
Columbus of Ransom.&nbsp; He worked as a parts manager for many years and 
also worked for South Fork Meat Processing. Dennis was an avid sports 
fan and loved cheering on his Michigan Wolverines.

Being an uncle was Dennis’ highlight in life.&nbsp; He is survived by his 
25 nieces and nephews and many great nieces and nephews; he took pride 
in each and every one of them.&nbsp; He is also survived by his mother, Mary 
Frances Flax, of Ransom, five brothers, Raymond (Sondra) Simon of 
Rantoul, Robert (Deborah) Simon of Garden City, Stephen (Debra) Simon of
 Goodland, Lewis (Crystal) Flax of Dodge City, Peter (Janetta) Flax of 
Ransom and two sisers, Rose Marie (Steve) Amerine of Rush Center and 
Catherine (John ) Blair of Hays.

Rosary and Parish Vigil will be held at St. Aloysius Church, Ransom 
on Tuesday, March 14, 2023, at 6:30 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be

Dennis Francis Flax

LouElla Elizabeth (nee Saindon) Sauer, 84, formerly of Fairview 
Heights, Ill., entered the arms of her heavenly Father on March 9, 2023.

Born on the family farm on February 17, 1939, in Grainfield, Kan., 
she shared a birthday with her identical twin sister and her mother.

Her story is best told as a love story ... Born and raised in a 
trilingual home to second generation immigrants, with a 100% French 
father and 100% German mother, her parents laid a path to demonstrate 
that love conquers all in the face of what was going on in their native 
countries during the time of World War II. The seeds of love were sown 
early when LouElla met her future husband Dale Francis Sauer Sr. when 
they shared their First Holy Communion together. Throughout their 
childhood, they stayed friends and eventually began courting. On January
 5, 1957, they were married, and he joined the Navy as a means to escape 
crushing poverty and improve their fortunes. LouElla graduated from high
 school and joined her husband. In spite of their humble beginnings, 
their love thrived.&nbsp;

Dale and Lou, as kids, hitched their wagons together early in Hays, 
Kansas, in the '40s and never looked back. Her unwavering devotion as a 
military spouse, and steadfast love helped bring a good man and three 
kids through 30 duty stations. Her courage and moxie at each home and 
duty station allowed her to find a job in almost any career field. 
Through it all, she remained completely devoted to her husband and did 
everything she could to raise three kids in multiple homes. Her husband 
passed away 4 years ago and yet through that time, and perhaps the best 
part of dementia, she talked to him and still loved him every day until 
the end following 62 years of marriage. They now forever unite their 
souls, as their bodies lie together here on earth.

Surviving are her three children: Lail Roma’ Manning (the late David 
Manning 1954-2018) of Vancouver, Wash., Christine Rene’ Kilroy (Michael 
Kilroy) of Edmonds, Wash., and Dale Francis Sauer II (Sutton Sauer) of 
Shiloh, Ill. She felt incredibly blessed to have seven grandchildren: 
Kendra (Manning) Knaggs, Levi Manning, Erin Kilroy, Joshua Heuiser, 
Meredith (Heuiser) Jackson, Zachary Sauer, and Jacob Sauer. She also had
 ten great grandchildren, Oliver and Harrison Manning, Colby, Jaxson, 
Franklin, and Vivian Heuiser, Olive Jackson, and Brooklyn, Archer, and 
Charlotte Sauer. She is also survived by brother Darel Saindon, and 
sister Darlene Jackson.

LouElla was preceded in death by her parents, Adrain and Lidwina (nee
 Dreher) Saindon, twin sister, LouCella Daniels, and her beloved 
husband, Dale F. Sauer Sr., a Navy Veteran and lifelong civil servant.

She was cherished by family and friends for her boundless energy, 
positive outlook, creativity, courage, loyalty, devotion to family, and 
unwavering kindness.

Memorial Donations are suggested in the form of Masses and will be accepted at Wolfersberger Funeral Home. 

Visitation: The family will receive friends from 4:00 to 
8:00 pm on Thursday, March 16, 2023, at Wolfersberger Funeral Home, 102 W
 Washington St., O'Fallon, Ill. The rosary will be recited at 7:30 pm 
that evening.

Funeral: Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 
11:00 am on Friday, March 17, 2023, at The Cathedral of Saint Peter, 200 
W. Harrison St., Belleville, Ill., with the Very Rev. Godfrey Mullen 
presiding. Following the Mass, both husband and wife will be laid to 
their final rest at Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery in St. Louis, 
Mo.

 school and joined her husband. In spite of their humble beginnings, 
their love thrived.&nbsp;Dale and Lou, as kids, hitched their wagons together early in Hays, 
Kansas, in the '40s and never looked back. Her unwavering devotion as a 
military spouse, and steadfast love helped bring a good man and three 
kids through 30 duty stations. Her courage and moxie at each home and 
duty station allowed her to find a job in almost any career field. 
Through it all, she remained completely devoted to her husband and did 
everything she could to raise three kids in multiple homes. Her husband 
passed away 4 years ago and yet through that time, and perhaps the best 
part of dementia, she talked to him and still loved him every day until 
the end following 62 years of marriage. They now forever unite their 
souls, as their bodies lie together here on earth.Surviving are her three children: Lail Roma’ Manning (the late David 
Manning 1954-2018) of Vancouver, Wash., Christine Rene’ Kilroy (Michael 
Kilroy) of Edmonds, Wash., and Dale Francis Sauer II (Sutton Sauer) of 
Shiloh, Ill. She felt incredibly blessed to have seven grandchildren: 
Kendra (Manning) Knaggs, Levi Manning, Erin Kilroy, Joshua Heuiser, 
Meredith (Heuiser) Jackson, Zachary Sauer, and Jacob Sauer. She also had
 ten great grandchildren, Oliver and Harrison Manning, Colby, Jaxson, 
Franklin, and Vivian Heuiser, Olive Jackson, and Brooklyn, Archer, and 
Charlotte Sauer. She is also survived by brother Darel Saindon, and 
sister Darlene Jackson.LouElla was preceded in death by her parents, Adrain and Lidwina (nee
 Dreher) Saindon, twin sister, LouCella Daniels, and her beloved 
husband, Dale F. Sauer Sr., a Navy Veteran and lifelong civil servant.She was cherished by family and friends for her boundless energy, 
positive outlook, creativity, courage, loyalty, devotion to family, and 
unwavering kindness.Memorial Donations are suggested in the form of Masses and will be accepted at Wolfersberger Funeral Home. Visitation: The family will receive friends from 4:00 to 
8:00 pm on Thursday, March 16, 2023, at Wolfersberger Funeral Home, 102 W
 Washington St., O'Fallon, Ill. The rosary will be recited at 7:30 pm

LouElla Elizabeth Sauer

Constance K. Cain, 84, passed away on March 9th, 2023, at the Holiday Resort in Salina, Kansas.

She was born April 14, 1938, in Plainville, Kansas, to Gladys and Carl Larsen.

Constance
 spent most of her life as a homemaker. She loved spending time working 
in her vegetable and flower garden. During the summer, it was nothing 
unusual for her to can more beets, tomatoes, and many other vegetables 
than a single person could possibly eat. She also really enjoyed going 
fishing, spending time with her family, and reading the Bible.

She
 never really had a whole lot of money and always seemed to make do with
 what she had. Often, putting things off or letting things go because 
she couldn’t afford it. But the one thing she always made sure of is 
that there was something to eat if you showed up to visit and stayed for
 a while.

She leaves behind her sister, Janet LeRouges 
of Florida; daughter, Terry Plunkett (Alan) of Carlton, Kansas; sons, 
Rick McCall of Culver, Kansas, Tim McCall (Karen) of Derby, Kansas.

She
 is survived by seven grandchildren, Joe Thompson (Mandy), Teresa 
Thompson (Joe), Levi Plunkett, Tonia Curtis (William), Jared McCall 
(Nicole), Chad McCall (Jenna) and Mariah McCall; twelve great 
grandchildren and two great great grandchildren.

She is proceeded in death by her parents and brother, Lavonne Larsen.

She will be greatly missed by her family.

Cremation was chosen and no services are planned at this time.

Robert "Bob" Dean Peintner, 72, died Saturday, March 11, 2023, in Dodge City, Kansas.

He was born on February 21, 1951, in Dodge City, Kansas, to Hugo and 
Delphine (Indiek) Peintner. He graduated from Windthorst High School and
 received a B.S. in Business Administration from Fort Hays State 
University. He was a farmer, rancher and lifetime resident of 
Spearville, Kansas.

Robert was a member of St. John Baptist Church and Knights of 
Columbus Council #1539, both of Spearville. He has served on the FSA, 
Offerle CO-OP and USD 381 School Boards. He loved to drive around the 
country, play snooker, build and fly model airplanes, and enjoy coffee 
and donuts with the neighbors. He was a good and kind man, respected and
 loved, and he will be missed.

On August 11, 1973, he married Jolene Clausen in St. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Cawker City, Kansas.

He is survived by his wife Jolene; 4 children, Bart Peintner and wife
 Liz of Denver, Colorado; Kurt Peintner of Spearville; Ben Peintner and 
wife Megan of Wright; and Katie Ackerman and husband TJ of Spearville; 2
 sisters, Linda Sanko and husband Don of Ellis, Kansas and Jan McConnell
 and husband Jeff of Marietta, Georgia; and one brother, Gary Peintner 
and wife Jody of Holyoke, Colorado; 9 grandchildren, Eli, Nolan, Landry,
 Jaxon, Ellis, Emma, Hudson, Henry and&nbsp; Lawson, with whom he loved to

Robert Dean 'Bob' Peintner

David E. Gray, Jr., passed away on February 21, 2023 at the Greeley 
County Hospital in Tribune, Kansas. He was born July 22, 1929, in 
Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, to David and Margaret (White) Gray. He 
graduated from Crafton, Pennsylvania, High School in 1948 and joined the 
army in 1948 and landed in the Battle of Incheon in Korea 1950. He 
received the Purple Heart in 1951 and ended up serving 22 years in the 
military followed by 15 years of civil service.

On May 18, 1957, Dave married Carol (Jennings) Gray at Malmstrom Air 
Force Base, Montana. To this union, two sons and two daughters were 
born. Dave, Papo to his family, was a devoted husband, father, 
grandfather, and friend to all he met. Dave enjoyed refereeing 
basketball and football, along with playing golf, bowling, and racquet 
ball. Dave was proud of his hole in one at the Cheyenne Shadows Golf 
Course, where he loved to go with his friends and family. Dave was most 
interested in attending 7th Division conventions and visiting with 
anyone that was stationed in Korea.

Dave is preceded in death by his father David and mother Margaret, his sisters Eileen, Gail, Rose Marie, Shirley and Alice.

Dave is survived by his wife Carol; daughters; Michelle (Mark) Scott 
and Sharon (David) Janitell and sons; David (Paula) and Mitchell (Sue 
Gray); sister Ann (Ray) Robbins, brother Lee (Pacita), nephew John 
Kramer; grandchildren; Grant Stermer, Joshua (Sarah) Gray, Zac (Ashlyn) 
Gray, Mallory (Chris) Dean, Victoria (Brian) Ali, Ryan Janitell, Kelsie

Elsie Lorraine (Bowker) Miller, 83, passed away on February 4th, 2023, in
 Paris, TX. Elsie was born March 19, 1939, in Stratton, CO to Klein P. 
Bowker and Lucille Willy Bowker. Elsie was raised on a farm in Stratton 
in her earlier years and then the family moved to Burlington, CO.&nbsp; Elsie
 was the oldest of 12 children. She graduated from Burlington High 
School in 1957. 
Elsie was living in Goodland, KS when she met Robert J Miller. They were
 married on July 1st, 1960.&nbsp; They raised 3 children Edwin Ray, Kimberly 
Kay and Lori Ann. 
Elsie dedicated her life to her children as they grew. Attending all 
school events, sporting events and countless swim meets. She was always 
their biggest fan and carried that enthusiasm thru to her grandchildren 
and great grandchildren. If anyone of them was competing she did her 
best to be in the front row cheering them on. In her spare time she was 
an avid bowler and golfer. Elsie cherished her friendships she gained 
thru both activities. After the children were grown she worked for 
Finley Motors and then Goodland Motor Company. She moved to Paris, TX in
 2007 to be closer to family. 
Elsie is preceded in death by her parents, her husband Bob Miller, her 
son, Edwin Ray Miller and her daughter, Kimberly Kay Knox. 3 sisters,

Lexsie Rae Newcomer, age 29, of WaKeeney, KS, passed away peacefully 
on Thursday, March, 9th, 2023, at the Hospice House in Hutchinson, 
Kansas.

Lexsie was born on February 15th, 1994, at Trego Lemke 
Memorial Hospital to Steve and Brenda Newcomer. She graduated from Trego
 Community High School in 2012 and her strong desire to help people led 
to her attending Kansas State University, where she pursued pre-physical
 therapy studies. Lexsie was a very strong student and was able to 
fast-track her education by getting into the advanced occupational 
therapy program at The University of Kansas School of Medicine. She 
graduated with her Bachelor’s and Master’s degree from there in 2017 and
 began working as an occupational therapist in the Kansas City area.

In her free time, Lexsie loved playing with her dog Sadie, hanging 
out with friends and family, going to concerts and movies, and cheering 
on her beloved Kansas State Wildcats. She had a huge heart and was 
always willing to lend a hand when someone needed help.

Lexsie is survived by her parents Steve Newcomer of Ogallah and 
Brenda Newcomer of WaKeeney, KS; Brother Mitch Newcomer (Kim) of 
WaKeeney, KS; Sister Whitney Montgomery (Taylor) of Denver, CO; Nieces 
Kamryn and Eva Newcomer and Baby Montgomery. She was preceded in death 
by her grandparents, Duane and Elaine Newcomer and Patricia Hands and 
Robert Spena; Her aunt and uncle Sandra and David French, and cousin 
Cory French.

A Memorial Mass will be held at 10:30 AM, Thursday, March 16, 2023,

Daniel Lynn “Danny” Casper, 76, Hays, died Saturday, March 11, 2023, at HaysMed.

He was born March 11, 1947, in Hays, 
Kansas, the son of Donald and Edna Jane (Bailey) Casper.&nbsp;&nbsp;Danny 
graduated from Hays High School in 1965.&nbsp;&nbsp;On January 21, 1967, he was 
united in marriage to Harriette Powell in Hays, and they celebrated 56 
years of marriage.&nbsp;&nbsp;Danny was a casino cage worker in Las Vegas, Nevada,

Survivors include his wife Harriette of
 the home, two sons, Jason Casper and wife Alina of Hays and Joseph 
Casper and wife Beth of Bend, OR, a daughter, Jessica Krutka of Las 
Vegas, NV, two brothers, Jeff Casper and wife Carolyn of Brownell and 
Tom Casper and wife Debbie of Hays, a sister, Diane Dreiling and husband
 Larry of Medicine Lodge, five grandchildren, Aaron Casper, Addison 
Casper, Alexandria Casper, Samantha Casper, and David Krutka, and 
numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Kelly Casper.

No funeral services are planned, and 
arrangements are in the care of Hays Memorial Chapel Funeral

Danny Allan Smith, born on May 14, 1969, passed away on March 8, 2023,&nbsp; in Quinter, Kansas, at the age of 53.&nbsp; He was born in Salinas, 
California, the son of Gene Allan and Pamelia Ann (Minchew) Smith.&nbsp;

Danny grew up in California and had lived in New York before moving 
to Quinter. He was happy to live anywhere a good drywall contractor was
 needed.

He is survived by his son Michael Allan Smith of California; 
daughter, Courtney Jean Smith and grandson Kasen of Washington;&nbsp; wife, 
Tracie Smith and son Jesse James Rip Allan Smith of New York; sisters, 
Danette (Mark) Landes and DeNell (Jeff) Davis, both of California;

Allen A. Windholz, age 81, of Victoria, Kansas, passed away on Saturday, March 11, 2023, at the Good Samaritan Society of Hays Care Center.

He was born May 10, 1941, in Hays, Kansas, to Anton and Philomena Hilda (Hammerschmidt) Windholz. &nbsp;He married Eileen C. (Wagner)&nbsp;on October 24, 1964, at Emmeram, Kansas.

Allen was a custodian at the Victoria Grade School and Victoria High School for 24 years. &nbsp;He also was a bus driver for the USD #432&nbsp;School&nbsp;District. &nbsp;He grew up on the family farm at Emmeram, attended grade school at Emmeram, and was a 1960 graduate of Victoria High School. &nbsp;In his earlier years Allen was a farm hand and worked on area farms. &nbsp;He always enjoyed his farm animals of pigs, fainting goats, guineas, peacocks, and some cattle. &nbsp;

He was&nbsp;US Army veteran,&nbsp;a member of The Basilica of St. Fidelis, the Catharine Knights of Columbus, the Hays American&nbsp;Legion, and a former member of the Sunflower Polka Club.&nbsp;

His survivors include his wife, Eileen Windholz, of the home; his children, Mark Windholz and wife, Brenda, Hays, KS; Theresa Meis and husband, Paul, Catharine, KS; Matthew Windholz and wife, Michelle, Ellis, KS; his sister, Altarena&nbsp;Basgall and husband, Leon, Yocemento, KS; his grandchildren, Michael Windholz (Nicole); Karl Meis, Kathleen Windholz&nbsp;and Coady Morris; Jacob Meis; his great grandchildren, Brooklynn and Mason Windholz.

Allen was preceded in &nbsp;death by his parents, Anton and&nbsp;Philomena Windholz; and his granddaughter, Julie Windholz.

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:00 A.M. Thursday, March 16, 2023, at The Basilica of St. Fidelis, Victoria, Kansas with Father James Moster O.F.M. Cap. officiating. &nbsp;

Beloved husband, 
father, grandfather, brother, uncle, professor extraordinaire, and dear 
friend Denny Lee passed away peacefully at home on March 8, 2023, after a
 courageous and extended battle with cancer. 

Denny was born in Hays, 
Kansas, on April 27, 1938, to Floyd MacDowell and Freda Lee. He always 
quipped that Hays was a good place to be from! Denny was joined by his 
fabulous sisters, Gretchen (Andeel) and Christie (Triplett). His 
childhood summers were spent in Prairie View, Kansas, with his beloved 
grandmother Cornelia (Cokie) and gramps, Art “two-beers” Denman, who 
taught him how to keep bees, a lifelong passion. A precocious child, he 
smoked his father’s precious WWII-rationed cigarettes and drove the 
family’s Model-A Ford well before his tenth birthday. Denny attended 
Hays High School and graduated both as president of the student body and
 valedictorian of his class. He thought he was pretty darn hot stuff, 
until his sister Gretchen did the very same, three years later. He 
attended the University of Kansas where he completed his undergraduate 
degree in physics in 1960 and PhD in nuclear physics in 1966. He joined 
the ATO fraternity and kept close friendships with his pledge class for 
more than 65 years, several of whom flew to Bozeman recently to bid 
farewell to their dear friend.

He completed a two-year 
National Academy of Science postdoctoral fellowship in nuclear physics 
at the Wright Patterson Air Force Base in Dayton, Ohio, and worked at the
 NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Los Angeles on the Apollo project. 
Denny married Susan Lee in 1965.  They moved to Bozeman, Montana, in 1968, where 
their son Craig was born in 1972. Denny taught in the physics department
 at Montana State University from 1968-1993, save for a brief teaching 
engagement at Ball State University, upon which he vowed never to leave 
his beloved Bozeman ever again. He enjoyed hiking and camping, and spent
 several summers camping in Yellowstone National Park, where he observed
 geysers and treated park visitors to impromptu lectures on geyser 
eruptions and park geology.

Denny became a legendary 
professor in the physics department at MSU, where he taught generations 
of engineering, science, pre-med, and architecture students the required
 sequence of physics courses. He was among the early advocates for the 
establishment of the WWAMI program and created an astronomy course 
entitled “Mysteries of the Sky,” which is still taught at MSU. 
Generations of students were enthralled by his teaching and memorable 
in-class demonstrations. Throughout his life, Denny was routinely 
approached by former students who expressed their gratitude to him for 
his teaching, even decades after his retirement.

In 
1970, Denny started consulting work as an expert witness, using the laws
 of physics to understand vehicular accidents and product liability 
cases. He worked with attorneys nationwide and truly enjoyed the 
challenges and sleuth-like nature of the work, summoning his gifts as a 
teacher to explain complicated concepts to juries. He continued his 
expert witness work full-time upon his retirement from MSU and became a 
respected and sought-after leader in the field. He particularly enjoyed 
working with his longtime friends Mark Baldwin, attorney John Bardelli 
and physicist and business partner Scott Anderson.

In 
addition to his intellect and great sense of humor, Denny possessed a 
sonorous bass voice and loved to sing. Encouraged by a retired voice 
professor seated next to him in church as Denny was enthusiastically 
singing a hymn, he decided to join the First Presbyterian Church Choir 
in 1992. Soon after, Denny decided to take piano lessons from the choir 
director, and eventually concluded that it would be cheaper to marry 
her, which demonstrated a rare lapse in judgment on his part. Denny and 
Ilse-Mari (van Wyk) were married on July 2, 1994 and were blessed with 
nearly 29 years of marriage. They traveled widely and enjoyed a life 
filled with love and joy. Denny delighted in Ilse’s achievements as a 
musician and composer and was especially proud of her work as dean of 
the Honors College at MSU, although he would add, she preferred the term
 “duchess.” During their early trips to Ilse’s native South Africa, 
Denny was able to meet several of Ilse’s family members, including her 
mother and grandmother (both named Barbara) as well as her brother, 
Waldemar, whom he loved as his own. Denny particularly enjoyed visiting 
the Kruger, Hluhluwe-Umfolozi and Etosha National Parks. He would have 
loved to return there.

Their daughter, Elizabeth, was 
born in 2002, and became the apple of Denny’s eye. He literally cried 
when she left for pre-school. Throughout the years, he listened to every
 cello lesson, attended every swim practice, taught her math and 
science, drove her back and forth to school, and instilled an abiding 
appreciation for literature in her. The two “pardners” kept bees and 
panned for gold on their two gold claims. Both Craig and Elizabeth 
inherited their dad’s sense of humor and fascination with the natural 
world, along with a love for the game of cribbage, with the attendant 
banter. Craig shared a passion for steam trains with his dad, both model
 and full-scale trains. Denny’s nephews and nieces (Michael, Jennifer, 
and Amy Triplett; Missy, John, Megan, and Katie Andeel) were all 
convinced that their beloved uncle Denny routinely spoke to Santa on his
 watch, resulting in model behavior during Thanksgiving dinner. The Lees
 traveled to Maui every year, where they found a welcoming Ohana at 
Keawali’i Congregational Church in Makena and established a second home 
in Kihei.

In 2018, on the eve of his 80th birthday 
family reunion, Denny was diagnosed with Myelodysplastic Syndrome, a 
form of leukemia. He received outstanding care in Bozeman and traveled 
to the Mayo Clinic, the Hutch Cancer Center (Seattle) and M.D. Anderson 
Cancer Center (Houston) for additional consultations and treatments. 
Thanks to brilliant oncologists and the advances of medical science, 
Denny was able to witness Elizabeth’s graduation from Bozeman High (also
 as a valedictorian) and matriculation to Dartmouth College. He loved 
visiting the campus this past fall.

To the end of his 
life, Denny could flawlessly recite works of literature and poetry that 
he had committed to memory, including this from Shakespeare’s Julius 
Caesar: “Of all the wonders that I yet have heard, it seems to me most 
strange that men should fear; seeing that death, a necessary end, will 
come when it will come.”

Denny is survived by his wife 
Ilse-Mari, daughter Elizabeth Marie, son Craig (Jennie) Lee, and 
granddaughter Ella Lee; as well as his sisters Gretchen (Stan) Andeel; 
Christie (Tom) Triplett, and many adoring nephews and nieces. The family
 wish to thank Dr. Luke Omohundro for his outstanding care of Denny over
 the years. We are deeply grateful to physical therapist Amy Appel, as 
well as to Dr. Collette Kirchhoff, Pamela Brown, Jeanette Johnson, and 
the entire Eden Hospice Team, for their compassionate guidance and 
expert care of Denny during the last months of his life. In lieu of 
flowers, the family would love it if you look up at the night sky, share
 a good laugh with a friend, or do a little something behind-the-scenes 
to uplift another, as Denny would have done.

Ilse-Mari, daughter Elizabeth Marie, son Craig (Jennie) Lee, and 
granddaughter Ella Lee; as well as his sisters Gretchen (Stan) Andeel; 
Christie (Tom) Triplett, and many adoring nephews and nieces. The family
 wish to thank Dr. Luke Omohundro for his outstanding care of Denny over
 the years. We are deeply grateful to physical therapist Amy Appel, as 
well as to Dr. Collette Kirchhoff, Pamela Brown, Jeanette Johnson, and 
the entire Eden Hospice Team, for their compassionate guidance and 
expert care of Denny during the last months of his life. In lieu of

Paul J. Stanton, 89, of WaKeeney, KS, passed away on March 8, 2023.&nbsp; 
Paul was born in WaKeeney on July 8, 1933, to James and Eleanor (Robben)
 Stanton. He graduated from Trego Community High School in 1951.

Paul went on to serve in the United States Navy, for which he was very proud.&nbsp; He travelled to many places during his service.&nbsp;&nbsp;

On November 10, 1962, Paul was united in marriage to Martina Rohr at 
Christ the King Catholic Church in WaKeeney.&nbsp; They were blessed with and
 raised four children at their home in WaKeeney which Paul built.&nbsp; He 
felt his most important job was providing for his family and being a 
good husband and father. During his 40-plus year working career, Paul 
worked for KDOT, Abercrombie and QuinStar. He enjoyed tackling projects 
that seemed impossible to most, spending time with friends at the coffee
 shop and travelling with his family; but what he really enjoyed most 
was spoiling his grandchildren and his four-legged friends he called his
 “Sheppies”.&nbsp; During his retirement years, he never missed “The Price is
 Right”.&nbsp; He and Martina enjoyed going gambling whenever they had the 
opportunity, and he loved scratching lottery tickets.

Paul is survived by his wife Martina of the home, children Tim 
(Melissa) Stanton of Ellis and their children Logan and Jessie; Terry 
(Shelly) Stanton of Larned and their children Kyle and Zachary; Troy 
(Chrissy) Stanton of Hays and their children Sonya, Ethan, Madison and 
Connor; and Tammy (Trevor) Hallagin of WaKeeney and their daughter 
Kristi (Joe) Wood and two great-grandchildren Lily &amp; Sophie Wood.&nbsp; 
He is also survived by his brother Francis Stanton of Denver, CO.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

Paul was preceded in death by his parents.

Funeral service will be held at 10:30 on Friday, March 17th, at Christ
 the King Catholic Church in WaKeeney, KS. Burial will follow at Kansas 
Veterans' Cemetery in WaKeeney.

Visitation will be Thursday, March 16th, from 5 to 7 at Schmitt Funeral Home in WaKeeney.

Paul J. Stanton

Janis Conine (Sculley) died on Thursday, March 9, 2023, at Lane County 
Hospital with family and friends by her side. She was born on June 7, 
1947, at Grisell Memorial Hospital in Ransom, KS. She was the daughter of
 John and Esther Sculley (Knauf). She married Ed Conine on August 6, 
1963, at Beeler, KS. They will celebrate their 60th wedding anniversary 
this year together. 
Janis worked as a seamstress for several years when her children were 
young. Later on, she worked at Dighton Grade School as a para teacher. 
In the spring of 1983 she started working at the First National Bank of 
Dighton, where she retired after 30 years of service as head teller. 
After retirement, Janis and Ed enjoyed traveling, camping and fishing 
with family and friends. They enjoyed riding their Harley’s and went on 
several road trips with friends. Janis’s interests and hobbies included 
fishing, golfing, bowling, camping, sewing, quilting, woodworking, 
baking and bird watching. She enjoyed playing cards with the women’s 
group in Dighton, meeting for coffee in the mornings and beverages in 
the evenings to visit with friends. In the early 1980s, Janis took an 
advanced cake decorating course and after that went on to make many 
birthday, wedding and anniversary cakes for family and friends. She 
recently took a woodworking class at Garden City Community College and 
from that built several of her great-grandkids' wooden babydoll cradles.
 It’s almost impossible to know how many quilts she made over the years 
that her family will cherish forever. 
She is survived by her children, 2 Daughters- Sheila and Roger Scheib of
 Liberal, Shari and Mike Lake of Salina and Son- Aaron and Lisa Conine 
of Dighton. 1 Brother- Max Sculley &amp; Jeanne of Coppell, TX, 10 
Grandchildren and 19 Great-Grandchildren. 
She is preceded in death by her husband, parents as well as many aunts and uncles. 
Funeral Service will be at 10:30 AM Tuesday at United Methodist Church 
in Dighton with Rev A. G. Turner and Rev Julie King Dye officiating. 
Burial will be in Dighton Memorial Cemetery. Friends may call from Noon

John Patrick “Pat” Greenleaf, 70, died March 7, 2023, at Wesley Medical 
Center, Wichita, Kansas. He was born March 7, 1953, in Pratt, Kansas, the
 son of James O. and Ruth (Huffman) Greenleaf. 
Known for his patience, humility, and hard work, Pat developed this 
character alongside his dad and brother on a ranch in Kiowa County. Pat 
had a God-given ability to work with horses and cattle and grew up 
loving the land of Kansas. Following High School in 1971, Pat enjoyed 
time in Manhattan getting his bachelor’s degree at Kansas State 
University and was a proud member of the Beta Theta Pi fraternity. 
On November 5, 1977, Pat married Donna Boyle who was his life partner in
 serving people, and with whom he enjoyed traveling and cherishing the 
role of “Grampie” in his last decade of life. Pat and Donna raised their
 twin boys, Justin and Jared, on the ranch during the early years of 
their marriage and parenting. Pat later returned to school and became a 
registered nurse (RN). While continuing to take care of cattle in 
various capacities, Pat also worked as an RN at Kiowa County Memorial 
Hospital and Pratt Regional Medical Center until the week before his 
death. 
A nearly lifetime Greensburg resident, Pat invested in Kiowa county as a
 rancher, nurse, member of the First United Methodist Church, and 
conservation district board member. In his quiet and dependable way, Pat
 deeply loved and cared for the people, land, and animals God allowed 
him to steward while on earth. 
Survivors include his wife Donna, two sons Justin (wife Pam) Greenleaf 
of Hays, Kansas and Jared (wife Amanda) of Kansas City, Kansas, four 
grandchildren Alexander, Elena, Andrew, and Anthony Greenleaf of Hays, a
 sister-in-law Sue Greenleaf of Greensburg, two nephews and a niece and 
their families, and many friends whom he considered as family. He was 
preceded in death by his parents and his brother Jim Greenleaf. 
A graveside service honoring Pat’s life will be held in Fairview 
Cemetery, Greensburg on Saturday, March 11, 2023, at 2pm with Pastor 
Dave Mealiff presiding.

John Patrick 'Pat' Greenleaf

Joseph Edward Scarry&nbsp;was born to Mary (Cook) and Fred Scarry, Jan. 
29, 1944, in Dunbar, PA. In the 1950s, Howard, Julia Whipkey and their 
children became Joseph’s family after his mother died.

Joseph
 entered Franciscan formation in 1965 from Immaculate Conception Church 
in Connellsville, PA, and became Br. Benignus making his final 
profession August 23, 1970, as a Capuchin Franciscan friar.  In 1972 
Benignus earned his AA in accounting at Strayer College, Washington, 
D.C.

Benignus’ vocation led him west from Washington, 
D.C. to Hays, KS in 1977 where he served in numerous roles at St. Joseph
 Church and TMP-Marian High School. Onto St. Louis, MO in 1988, and back
 to Kansas in 1990 to renovate an Old West Lawrence house to become a 
new friary. Benignus lived and worked in Lawrence until 1999 doing 
maintenance for the friars, many friends, neighbors, as well as building
 homes as a general contractor and executive board member for Habitat 
for Humanity. In 1999, Benignus went on to more building projects in 
East St. Louis and The Family Center, to Denver and Colorado Springs, 
ever ministering to the poor, cooking for his fellow friars, and doing 
maintenance wherever he went.

Settling in Topeka, KS, 
in 2016, Joseph enjoyed good friends working at Menard’s and (along with
 his beloved dachshund, Charlie) frequenting Topeka’s dog parks.

Surviving
 Joseph are his sister, Carol Parise, and his Whipkey family members, 
Mark, Patty, Sherm, Patty, Joel, Marilyn, Paul, Jean, Anne, and Mary, as
 well as too many friends and friars to name. May Joseph continue to 
build the Kingdom!

Graveside services and inurnment 
will be at 10:00 A.M. Monday, March 13, 2023. At the St. Fidelis 
Cemetery, Victoria. Kansas with Father Curtis Carlson O.F.M. Cap. 
officiating.
