James Fredrick Long was born on April 11, 1957, in Norton, Kansas, the
 son of Francis “Sam” and Alvera Juenemann Long. He died on Thursday, 
February 23, 2023 at the Mitchell County Hospital in Beloit, Kansas at 
the age of 65.

Jim and his family moved to Beloit, where he attended schools and 
graduated from St. John’s High School and excelled in football and 
track.

On August 26, 1989, he was united in marriage with Denise 
Charbonneau and they resided in Downs. One son, Anthony was born to this
 union.

Jim worked at the Farmway Co-op and Midway Co-op elevators for many 
years. Upon retiring, he helped his son Anthony on the farm.

In his spare time, he enjoyed deer hunting, and was a huge sports 
fan. His love for his family was immeasurable, and he loved spending 
time with them.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Sam and Alvera.

Jim is survived by his wife Denise of the home; son, Anthony and 
his wife Brooke of Downs; three adored grandchildren, Vannon, Cullen, 
and Lindy; siblings, Diana McConnell of Oregon, Ed and his wife Lisa of 
Beloit, Arlene Alley of Delphos, Steve and his wife Beverly of Osborne, 
and John and his wife Jennifer of Oregon; many nieces and nephews, and a
 host of friends.

Memorial services will be at 10:30 AM Friday, March 3, at the 
temporary St. John's Catholic Church - former Dollar General Building in
 Beloit. A rosary service will be at 9:30 AM Friday at the same 
location. Cremation has taken place &amp; there will be no visitation. 


In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to the Jim Long Memorial (to 
be used for his grandchildren's education).

Linda Louise Zerr (Dickman)

Russell William Pennington, 98, a longtime resident of Graham County,
 died Friday, Feb. 24, 2023, in Broomfield, Colorado. Russell was born 
on Jan. 6, 1925, in Salina, Kansas, to Russell and Mary (McCain) 
Pennington. The Penningtons operated the Buchanan general store which 
was located 12 miles north of Bogue. Russell’s family lived on the 
second floor of the store and raised wheat and cattle on their nearby 
farm.

Russell graduated from the one-room Buchanan country school 
which was located less than a mile from the store. He then attended and 
graduated from Hill City High School. Russell never claimed to be an 
athlete, but he also never tired of telling folks he played tight end on
 the only undefeated football team in Hill City’s history. In 1943 the 
team was untied and scored on just once.

Shortly after graduating 
from high school, Russell volunteered for the United States Navy and 
served on the USS St. Paul in the South Pacific. He attended the War 
College of the Pacific near Pearl Harbor and was later stationed on the 
island of Saipan.

After returning home from the navy Russell 
attended and graduated from Fort Hays State. He majored in chemistry 
earning his teaching certificate, was a member of the Tau Kappa Epsilon 
fraternity and was a Prince of the Reveille Ball in 1948. Throughout his
 life Russell loved music and enjoyed dancing. While in college, this 
led to him meeting the love of his life – Mary Lou Fellers of Hays. They
 were married on Aug. 9, 1949, in the First United Methodist Church of 
Hays.

The following year, Russell and Mary Lou moved to Rozel, 
Kansas, where he was principal of the grade school and taught seventh 
and eighth grades as well as high school biology. Mary Lou taught high 
school English and literature.

After teaching three years in 
Rozel, Russell and Mary Lou moved to the Pennington family farm north of
 Bogue so he could share the increasing workload with his brother, 
Walter. Here, Russell and Mary Lou began a family: Russell Mark was born
 in 1954 and William Dane was born in 1956. The young family lived on 
the farm for five years and then moved to Bogue in the spring of 1958. 
In 1960 they built their “forever” home in Bogue in which they lived for
 nearly 60 years.

Russell taught for three years at 
Bogue High School and then became a rural mail carrier serving first out
 of Bogue and later out of Clayton. He carried the mail for more than 31
 years, while, at the same time, helping farm and raise cattle on the 
family land with his brother. Russell worked hard during these years, up
 before dawn to carry the mail and farming in the afternoon and evening 
till dark, like Kansas farmers do. During this time he also served three
 years as a state officer for the Kansas Rural Letter Carriers 
Association.

Russell was a member of the Bogue United Methodist 
Church and served on many church boards. He served on the board of 
directors for both the Graham County Hospital and the Graham County Fair
 &amp; Rodeo. He was scoutmaster for Bogue Boy Scout Troop 183 for many 
years while his sons were scouts. For years he managed a swing dance 
club which provided big band music to his generation and drew dancers 
from nearby communities in NW Kansas.

In 2019 Russell and Mary Lou
 left their beloved home and moved to an assisted living facility in 
Broomfield, Colorado, to be near family as they aged. During this time 
Russell longed for home and never missed a beat in attributing his 
declining health not to his advancing age but to the move from Kansas.

Survivors
 include Russell’s wife, Mary Lou, of Broomfield, Colorado; Mark and his
 wife, Josie, of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania; Dane and his wife, Sandy, of 
Superior, Colorado, and their three sons: Grant; Tyler and wife, 
Brittany; and Connor and wife, Rachael, who are expecting Russell’s and 
Mary Lou’s first great-grandchild in May. All three grandsons live in 
the Denver area.

Preceding Russell in death were his parents, 
Russell and Mary; his baby brother, Donald; his sister, Lucielle, and 
husband, Tom Triplett; and his brother, Walter, and wife, Eleanor 
(Steward).

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, 
March 4, at the Bogue United Methodist Church with Pastor Julie Truhlar 
officiating. The public is invited for a final viewing at 9:30 a.m. at 
the church prior to the service.

Burial will be at the Wildhorse 
Township Cemetery. Memorials may be given to the Bogue United Methodist 
Church, Bogue, Kansas, 67625.

Mark Edward Hale, 46, died Monday Feb. 27, 2023, at St. Catherine Hospital in Garden City. He was born Aug. 28, 1976, in Garden City, the son of Henry and LaVonne (Hammer) Hale; they survive. Mark spent his entire childhood in Satanta, graduating from Satanta schools. He was active on their football and basketball teams. Mark especially loved woodworking in his high school shop class.

Growing up, he and his four brothers spent many days competing in full-contact driveway basketball games. As a child, Mark was a daredevil. He was known to sneak onto the roof and jump to the ground. As an adult, he reached new heights on a skydiving trip with his wife. Needless to say, Mark gave his mother more than a few gray hairs. Mark continued his education at Seward County Vocational School, completing his certificate in drafting. During that time, he also completed his scuba diving certification. During high school, Mark made the best decision of his life when he asked Katherine Ann Lies out on their first date; thus beginning a lifelong love story. On Aug. 31, 2002, they married in Satanta. Anyone who knew them well would say they were made for each other. Throughout their marriage, they faced trials and many great joys, but through it all, they faced them together. After their marriage, they settled in Garden City where Mark started a 17-year career with Wind River Grain. Mark was a hard-working man, always dependable for both his family and his employer. Mark was strong-willed and stubborn at times but he was also genuine and could talk to anyone about anything. He was an avid sports fan and may have been a little too competitive when it came to his co-ed softball league or his fantasy football teams.

Mark was known to participate in marathon Risk games that stretched well into the night with his brothers during the holidays. Most of all Mark loved his family, especially his wife and children. Together they enjoyed swimming, playing any kind of game, being silly, telling jokes; he was especially good with “dad jokes," and just spending time with each other. He and his children spent countless hours wrestling in the living room, much to Kate’s chagrin. Mark was a lifelong Kansas City Chiefs fan, even during their worst seasons. Yearly, he and his brothers journeyed to Kansas City to attend at least one NFL game together. In 2020, he and his brothers were in the stadium to watch the Chiefs win the AFC championship. He was so excited to see his Chiefs win the Superbowl again this year, staying up to watch every minute of the game with his family despite his progressing illness. Mark is survived by his wife Katherine, two daughters Rhogue Faith, and Rhavyn Grace; son Rhyder Maverick all of the home; brothers: Eric Hale of Satanta; Tim Hale of Hays; Jeremy (Amy) Hale of Hays; and Brent (Brittani) Hale of Wichita; sisters-in-law: Heather (Tim) Stegman of Holcomb; and Rebecca (Jay) Conine of Fremont, Neb.; brother-in-law Brian Lies of Satanta; mother-in-law Madonna Lies of Satanta; as well as numerous, nieces, nephews, and other extended family. He is preceded in death by his grandparents, Robert and Betty Hammer, Bill and Geraldine Hale and step-grandmother Gail Hale, uncles Kenneth Hale and Perry Hitchings, and father-in-law Paul Lies. Funeral mass will be at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, March 6, 2023, at St. Dominic Catholic Church with Rev. Warren Stecklein as celebrant. Mark Edward Hale

Longtime Goodland resident and former Scott City resident, Avesta Mae McGrath, 82, passed away on Wednesday, March 1, 2023, at the Goodland Regional Medical Center in Goodland.

Avesta was born at home in Hartman, Colo., on Aug. 22, 1940, to Ray and Freda (Werley) Miller. She was one of six children.&nbsp; She attended school through the 12th grade in Holly, Colo.&nbsp;

On Sept. 7, 1958, Avesta married John Theodore McGrath at the First Methodist Church in Holly, Colo. To this union, five children were born — Becky, Sharon, Douglas, Janet and John.

Aside from raising her children, Avesta and John cared for numerous children in the foster care system during their eight years as foster parents in Scott City.&nbsp; Avesta also worked for the U.S. Census Bureau and delivered the Salina Journal newspaper for over 20 years.&nbsp; She was also a 4-H Leader where she taught knitting and crocheting, and was a member of the Rebekah Lodge.

Preceding her in death were her parents and her husband.&nbsp;

She is survived by her children Becky Young (Edwin Lewis) of Liberal; Sharon (Ron) Henry of Levant; Douglas McGrath of San Diego, Calif.; Janet (Craig) Lawson of Goodland; and John McGrath Jr. of Scott City.&nbsp; She is also survived by one sister, four brothers, seven grandchildren, one great-grandchild and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Ernest Alvin “Sonny” Stoppel, 75, of Russell, died peacefully on Thursday, Dec. 1, 2022, at the Wheatland Nursing Center in Russell, after a long battle with cancer.

Cremation has been selected by the family. A gathering memorial service to celebrate Sonny’s life and visit with the family will be from 10 a.m. to noon on Friday, March 10 at the mortuary.

Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary of Russell is in charge of the memorial service arrangements.

On Friday, Jan. 20, 2023, David Keith Faulkner, adored husband, and stepfather of two, walked unexpectedly but peacefully into Heaven, at the age of 64 and 3 months—too soon.

Dave, as he was known to all, was born on Nov. 3, 1958, at St. Joseph's Hospital, in Wichita, to Keith and Doris (Cox) Faulkner, the eldest of three boys. The family moved to Hays in 1963, where Dave grew up and graduated from Hays High School, in 1976.

He worked a few years in Wichita in aircraft factories, then returned to Hays and worked 22 years as a firefighter, 14 of these for the city of Hays, then 10 years afterward as a welder, for Leon's Welding.

In 2015, Dave impressed a new girl in town, teaching her to weld, which sparked love and adventure in them both. In 2016, he left his hometown to be closer to her, working again as a welder and now supervisor, in Colorado Springs. After a year, he opened Faulk n Berry Metalwork, in Cascade-Chipita Park, Colo.

Dave was proud of the name he invented and soon also to be well known in the region for their many customers and exceptional metalwork. On June 2, 2018, he married that girl, Heather Berryman (originally from Ashland, Kan.), in Cripple Creek, Colo. Guests enjoyed a wedding dinner from a Santa Maria grill, fabricated by Dave and Heather, for their Hays-born-and-raised caterer. The devoted couple rode a whirlwind of newness together, experiencing new love, new family, new accomplishments, and new life—in more ways than one, with Dave fulfilling his a little early.

Dave loved his two stepchildren as his own, excelling in his new roles as father and grandfather. He was still settling into this new life with renewed excitement and many new exploits, such as traveling internationally, dreaming about soon making work his hobby, and planning a train trip to Pittsburgh for a Steelers game, with his new knees.

He was deeply loved and admired and became the glue to his new family. Dave had a passion for mechanical things and could fix just about anything. He loved motorcycles and muscle cars, especially Pontiac GTOs, also firetrucks and trains.

He and his wife fabricated all kinds of things in their business, from industrial tools to wrought iron fences, children's toys to fine art. Dave's true passion though was for his family and friends. He was known and loved for his kind and helpful nature, his snappy wit and an ever-present smile that shined through his wild, handlebar mustache.

Most recently, he was known for his successful recovery from addictions, compassion for helping other addicts, love for his church, and his quiet but deep devotion to Jesus Christ.

Dave was welcomed Home by his dear mother Doris, two greatly missed grandmothers, and a grandbaby whom Dave was one of the first to meet and hold there and who will undoubtedly be taught to weld by Grampa. 

Dave is survived by his beloved wife Heather (Chipita Park, Colo.), stepson Ian and wife Danielle, four grandchildren (to whom he was Grampa Choo Choo for the kiddy train he and Gramma built for them), Declan, Jemma, Judah, and new baby soon to be born (Miles City, Mont.), his stepdaughter Shaene (Woodland Park, Colo.), his beloved father Keith and brothers Kevin and Craig, his nephew Cary and niece Katie, paternal Uncle Don and wife Muriel, (all in California), maternal Aunt Marilyn (Halstead), also his parents-in-law Chan and Sue Berryman, sisters-and brothers-in-law, nieces and nephews through marriage, all who adored Dave as their own blood, his many cousins, motorcycle club brothers, work buddies, and his vast number of friends, new and old, all of whom he loved and kept close to his heart.

Dave is already terribly missed by his dog Harley and brokenhearted loved ones, who planned to see him this week, next month, every day..., especially by his beloved wife, who hasn't heard all his wild stories nearly enough times yet. Friends and family will be invited to celebrate Dave's life, in his hometowns of Hays, and Green Mountain Falls, Colo., at memorial gatherings planned for later in spring.

Kaiden Christopher Reed, 27, passed away February 28, 2023, at Pawnee Valley Community Hospital, Larned.

He was born July 31, 1995, in La Crosse, the son of Travis K. and 
Vanessa M. Torrez Reed.&nbsp; A lifetime area resident, he was a security 
officer at Larned State Hospital. Kaiden enjoyed video games and 
playing the card game Magic.

Survivors include: parents, Travis and Vanessa Reed, Larned; 
girlfriend, Cheryl Ryan, Larned; children, Adaline and Dylan Reed, both 
of the home; two brothers, Emilio Sheets, Larned and Reid Sheets, 
Hutchinson; grandma, Janis Reed, Dighton; grandpa, Don Torrez, Larned;&nbsp; and many aunts, uncles and cousins.

Funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Friday, March 3, 2023, at Beckwith

Kaiden Christopher Reed

Louis L. Roberts, was born on August 7, 1935, at his parents’ home on
 the farm in Gove County, Kansas.  He passed away February 25, 2023, at 
the age of 87,

Louis attended elementary school in Gove, finished 
in a country school in the county, and attended and graduated from High 
School in 1953 in Quinter, Kansas.  He spent the following summer in 
Puerto Rico on a mission with the Church of the Brethren, returning in 
the fall to attend college at McPherson College in McPherson, Kansas.  
In June of the following year, Louis married his high school sweetheart,
 JoAnn (Crissman) Roberts in Quinter.  They returned to McPherson where 
Louis continued his college education and was starting center for the 
McPherson Bulldogs, graduating in 1957 with a Bachelor of Science degree
 in Agriculture.

After graduation, Louis and JoAnn moved to 
Norton County where they farmed and had a dairy.  When Louis’ parents 
had a major car accident, Louis, JoAnn, and first daughter, Belinda, 
born in 1958, moved back to Quinter.  Daughter Nanette was born there in
 1961 and the family moved back to Norton County to farm.  They bought a
 homestead owned by Walt and Alice Hotz and moved into the two story 
farmhouse.  On January 12, 1968, the farmhouse burned to the ground with
 Louis saving only a chair and a small file cabinet.  The network of 
friends, family, and church surrounded the family and with Louis’ 
stubbornness and strength of will, they rebuilt their farm and life and 
remained on that farm north of Almena for the next 25 years.

In 
1967 after injuring his leg from a horse riding accident, Louis began 
reading aviation magazines and as JoAnn says, that started his journey 
that would last a lifetime.  Louis learned to fly from Delvis Miller and
 spent a short time as a crop duster, flew air ambulance, was a flight 
instructor, and reached the final rating for pilots with his jet pilot’s
 license he maintained the rest of his life.  He became known as the 
“Flying Farmer” serving as a corporate pilot for Buford Van Loenen, 
Baird Oil, and finishing his career flying a King Air 200 for Valley 
Hope Alcoholics Association for 18 years, retiring at the age of 70.

Louis
 and JoAnn spent the next 15 years travelling annually to Tucson, 
Arizona, in their fifth wheel RV for 3 months spending time with Louis’ 
brother and wife, Dr. Melvin and Virginia Roberts. He enjoyed working on
 the farm with his son-in-law, Kent Thalheim and grandsons Austin and 
Avery Thalheim and their families, and great-grandsons Kenton, Gavin, 
and Taiton.

Louis is survived by wife of 68 years, JoAnn 
(Crissman) Roberts of the home; daughters Belinda (Kent) Thalheim; 
Nanette (Terri Emley) Roberts; Grandsons Austin (Angela) Thalheim, and 
Avery (Jessie) Thalheim; and Great-Grandsons Kenton, Gavin, and Taiton 
Thalheim; Brother Dr. Melvin (Virginia) Roberts; Nieces Diana (Steve) 
Calderoni, Chris (Margo) Roberts, and Teema (Doug) Roberts.

Louis 
was predeceased by his parents, Dale and Elsie Roberts; brother, Dennis 
Roberts; and beloved nieces Dawn Roberts and Susan Roberts.

A 
Celebration of Life will be held 11:00 am Wednesday, March 1, 2023, at 
the funeral home. Private family burial will be at the Norton Cemetery. 
Visitation will be from 5:30-7:30 pm Tuesday, February 28, also at the 
funeral home.

Louis Leroy Roberts

Larry Lee Christiansen, 75, passed away on February 25, 2023, in Reno
 County, Kan. He was born on January 21, 1948, in Great Bend, Kan., to 
Reynold and Viola (Tiepermann) Christiansen. On June 19, 1965, he 
married Peggy Callaway in Ellinwood, Kan. She passed on February 1, 
2023.

A lifelong resident of Hudson, Larry spent many working years as a 
farmer and stockman. In addition, he owned his own bulldozer business, 
as well as drove the school bus for USD 350. Larry was a member of Peace
 Church, Great Bend Saddle Club, a 4-H project leader, St. John Tiger 
Booster, and held positions on the soil conservation board in Stafford 
County and Byron township. He enjoyed hunting, riding horses, and 
fishing.

Survivors include a daughter, Dawn (Jay) Brack of Hutchinson, Kan.; 
two sons, Curtis (Tami) Christiansen of Wichita, Kan., and George Allen 
“G.A” (Aimee) Christiansen of Great Bend, Kan.; five grandchildren, 
Jayce, Gage, Jaxon, Bradyn, and Courtney Christiansen; three 
step-grandchildren, Kodie McFarren, Cooper and Kadie Bailey; and 
sister-in-law, Phyllis Christiansen of McCook, Neb. He was preceded in 
death by his wife; his parents; grandson, Chandler Christiansen; 
brother, Harold Christiansen; and sister, Cherline Haase.

Visitation will take place from Noon to 8:00 p.m. Thursday, March 2, 
2023, with family receiving guests from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., at 
Bryant Funeral Home. Funeral Service will take place at 2:00 p.m. 
Friday, March 3, 2023, at Peace Church in Hudson, Kan., with Pastor 
Tonya Andrews presiding. Interment will follow at Peace Church Cemetery.

Later, the family moved to Norton County, KS where Wilda attended School
 District #60 through the 8th grade. She then attended and graduated 
from Almena Rural High School with the class of 1947. That summer, she 
attended Fort Hays College and earned a teaching certificate.

From 
1947 to 1950, Wilda taught school at the Cactus School south of Almena. She 
renewed her teaching certificate each year while also earning additional
 college credits. She met and later married John Wesley Sides on June 
17, 1949, in Logan, KS. The couple later moved to Densmore, KS and 
welcomed their first child, Ronald Eugene Sides in 1951. A second son, 
Keith was welcomed in 1955. Wilda lost John to a tragic automobile 
accident on January 5, 1957. Following the accident, Wilda and her two 
sons moved to Norton, KS where she took employment with the Norton 
County Welfare Department. 

She met Glenn Everett Bowman at the Safeway 
in Norton and the two were later married on August 14, 1959. Wilda and 
Glenn eventually had two additional sons together, Mark Steven Bowman in
 1960 and Todd Michael Bowman in 1964. Wilda retired from the State of 
Kansas Social and Rehabilitative Services in 1992. In retirement, Wilda 
and Glenn enjoyed traveling and visiting family. Glenn passed away in 
2005 and Wilda moved to Kearney shortly after to be closer to family. 
Wilda was a longtime member of the Norton Christian Church in Norton and
 later the Countryside Christian Church in Kearney. Wilda is

Bogue High School and then became a rural mail carrier serving first out
 of Bogue and later out of Clayton. He carried the mail for more than 20
 years, while, at the same time, helping farm and raise cattle on the 
family land with his brother. Russell worked hard during these years, up
 before dawn to carry the mail and farming in the afternoon and evening 
till dark, like Kansas farmers do. During this time he also served three
 years as a state officer for the Kansas Rural Letter Carriers 
Association.

In 2019, Russell and Mary Lou
 left their beloved home and moved to an assisted living facility in 
Broomfield, Colorado, to be near family as they aged. During this time 
Russell longed for home and never missed a beat in attributing his 
declining health not to his advancing age but to the move from Kansas.

Burial will be at the Wildhorse

Russell William Pennington, 98, a longtime resident of Graham County,
 died Friday, Feb. 24, 2023, in Broomfield, Colorado. Russell was born 
on Jan. 6, 1925, in Salina, Kansas, to Russell and Mary (McCain) 
Pennington. The Penningtons operated the Buchanan general store which 
was located 12 miles north of Bogue. Russell’s family lived on the 
second floor of the store and raised wheat and cattle on their nearby 
farm.Russell graduated from the one-room Buchanan country school 
which was located less than a mile from the store. He then attended and 
graduated from Hill City High School. Russell never claimed to be an 
athlete, but he also never tired of telling folks he played tight end on
 the only undefeated football team in Hill City’s history. In 1943 the 
team was untied and scored on just once.Shortly after graduating 
from high school, Russell volunteered for the United States Navy and 
served on the USS St. Paul in the South Pacific. He attended the War 
College of the Pacific near Pearl Harbor and was later stationed on the 
island of Saipan.After returning home from the navy Russell 
attended and graduated from Fort Hays State. He majored in chemistry 
earning his teaching certificate, was a member of the Tau Kappa Epsilon 
fraternity and was a Prince of the Reveille Ball in 1948. Throughout his
 life Russell loved music and enjoyed dancing. While in college, this 
led to him meeting the love of his life – Mary Lou Fellers of Hays. They
 were married on Aug. 9, 1949, in the First United Methodist Church of 
Hays.The following year, Russell and Mary Lou moved to Rozel, 
Kansas, where he was principal of the grade school and taught seventh 
and eighth grades as well as high school biology. Mary Lou taught high 
school English and literature.After teaching three years in 
Rozel, Russell and Mary Lou moved to the Pennington family farm north of
 Bogue so he could share the increasing workload with his brother, 
Walter. Here, Russell and Mary Lou began a family: Russell Mark was born
 in 1954 and William Dane was born in 1956. The young family lived on 
the farm for five years and then moved to Bogue in the spring of 1958. 
In 1960 they built their “forever” home in Bogue in which they lived for
 nearly 60 years.Russell taught for three years at

club which provided big band music to his generation and drew dancers 
from nearby communities in NW Kansas.In 2019, Russell and Mary Lou
 left their beloved home and moved to an assisted living facility in

Russell longed for home and never missed a beat in attributing his

husband, Tom Triplett; and his brother, Walter, and wife, Eleanor

Pamela "Pam" Yvette Bracy, 69, passed away 
peacefully February 20, 2023. She was born on August 14, 1953, in 
Woodston, Kansas, to Warren and Janeva Jones, who both preceded her 
death.

Pam was the oldest of four siblings, which undoubtedly led to her 
hard-working, nurturing, and selfless personality. She was rarely still,
 and spent her life making sure that those around her were happy and 
taken care of.

In 2016, Pam retired from the Internal Revenue Service where she spent
 her entire career. Being the first one in her family to attend college 
and earn a degree, she was very proud of the accomplishments that she 
had made, but at the same time humble enough to never broadcast them.

Pam’s passion for life was infectious. She had a quick wit and a 
great sense of humor that always put people at ease and made friends 
everywhere she went. She loved spending time with her family and friends
 and was always up for a game of pool or a shopping trip.

Pam will be deeply missed by all who knew her. Her kindness and 
generosity touched the lives of many. Pam is survived by her daughter 
Danica Bracy, and siblings Tammy Jones, Jerry Jones and Fred Jones.

Raymond C. Cutler, 83, of Salina, Kansas, passed away Saturday, February 25th, 2023.

Raymond was born in Medford, Massachusetts on July 4, 1939, the son of Phyllis Fannie (Hill) and Walter Chester Cutler.

He retired from Grainbelt Supply where he was a machine operator. He also worked at Tony's, Exide and Napa Auto Parts.

On July 9th, 1961, Raymond married Patricia Mead in Salina.

Survivors
 include his wife, Patricia, of the home; son, Terry Cutler, of Hays, 
Kansas; three daughters, Dawn Cramer (Troy), of Salina, Josie Ramon, of 
Salina, Cassie Ramon, of Salina; grandsons, Traylor Cramer, Trevor 
Cramer, Jacob Cramer, and Javier Ramon.

Raymond is also
 survived by two sisters, Virginia Woods (Richard), of Haines, Florida; 
Marilyn Haverty, of Haynes, Florida; two brothers, Robert Cutler, of Los
 Cruz, New Mexico and Russell Cutler (Shun Thu), of Bradenton, Florida.

He is preceded in death by his parents; brother, Richard Cutler; sister-in-law, Mary Cutler.

Ronald Eugene Rohr, 80, died Friday, February 24, 2023, at the 
University of Kansas Health System in Great Bend, Kansas. He was born 
August 23, 1942, in Ness City, Kansas, the son of Fred “Tony” and Helen 
(Stecklein) Rohr. 
 Ronald grew up and lived with his family in Ness City till the age 
of twelve when they moved to Great Bend, Kansas. He served in the 
United States Navy from 1949 to 1953. After the service, Ronald worked 
at CKMC as a boiler room operator. He later worked at the Larned State 
Hospital as a supervisor of the plumbing department until his 
retirement. Ron was a member of the Price of Peace Catholic Church in 
Great Bend and enjoyed his time woodworking and fixing things. 
 In 1974, he married Patricia Ann Rupp Hembree in Ness City, Kansas.
 She survives. Other survivors include two sons Frank &amp; wife 
Shawnda Hembree of Holcomb, Kansas and Bill &amp; wife Jodi Hembree of 
Newalla, Oklahoma; five grandchildren Rachelle, Samantha, Billy, Tommy, 
&amp; Brice; five great-grandchildren; a brother George Rohr of Mountain
 Home, Arkansas; three nieces; and one nephew. Ron is preceded in death
 by his parents and a son Mitchell Rohr. 
 A Rosary will be held at 1:30 p.m. and Funeral Mass to follow at

She was born August 30, 1963, in 
Wichita, the daughter of James and Betty (Byrns) Wilder.&nbsp; Cindy 
graduated from Hays High School and studied sociology and psychology in 
college.&nbsp; On January 30, 1982, she was united in marriage to James “Jim” 
Thayer in Hays, and they celebrated 39 years of marriage before he 
preceded her in death on March 22, 2021.&nbsp; 

Cindy was kind-hearted, 
generously helped others, and used her caring nature in her work as a 
disability advocate.&nbsp; She and her husband owned and operated Economy 
Cab.&nbsp; Cindy loved cats, was very involved in her children’s lives and 
activities, and adored her grandchildren.

Survivors include her son, Phillip 
Thayer and partner Nathan Davis, daughter, Heather Thayer and husband 
Kirk Werth, two grandchildren, Kassii and Chase Werth, all of Hays, and 
two brothers.

She was preceded in death by her parents and husband.

Cynthia L. 'Cindy' Thayer

Dorothy Martha Balluch passed away on Sunday February 26, 2023, at home in Manhattan, Kansas.  She was 91 years old.

Dorothy was born on March 27, 1931, to John and Barbara (Graf) Spies in Quinter, Kansas.

Dorothy
 graduated from Quinter High School in 1949, and later graduated from 
the Salina Beauty Academy.  Owner/operator of Dorothy’s Beauty Shop in 
Quinter, she was an important part of the community for many years.  In 
1973, she moved to Lincoln, KS and a few years later to Ellsworth, KS to 
follow her job manufacturing telephone wires with Essex Group.  She 
lived over 40 years in Ellsworth, spending her final 3 months living 
with her son, Eddie, in Manhattan, KS.

On August 18, 1950, she was united in marriage to Eddie Balluch.

To
 this union they had 2 daughters and 4 sons.  Sue Ellen (Richard) 
Goates, Eugene, Eddie, Donald (Rose), Donna (Chuck) DuFault and Chris 
(Ila).

Dorothy was preceded in death by her husband 
Eddie Balluch, her parents John and Barbara Spies, brother John Spies, 
daughter Sue Ellen and son Chris.

Dorothy is survived 
by her brother Harold, children, Gene, Eddie, Donald and Donna and 19 
grandchildren and 39 great-grandchildren.

Over the 
years Dorothy was an avid softball player, bowler, and busy mother 
following the many activities of her six children.  Later in life she 
stayed busy stitching away on numerous quilts.  She loved to mow.  Many a
 lawn mower were worn out maintaining her large yard at less than 3 
inches tall, throughout the growing season.

Memorial 
services will be held on Saturday March 11, 2023, at 10:00 a.m. at the 
Ashland Community Church, 2901 W 32nd Ave., Manhattan, KS 66502.  A 
luncheon will follow the service.  Burial will be at a later date in the
 Baker Township Cemetery, Quinter, KS.

In lieu of 
flowers, memorial contributions are suggested to Ashland Community 
Church.  Donations may be sent to Yorgensen – Meloan – Londeen Funeral 
Home, 1616 Poyntz Ave., Manhattan, KS 66502.

Georgia Fregon, 75, died on Monday, February 27, 2023, at The Ranch House
 in Garden City. She was born on April 22, 1947, at Longmont, Colorado,&nbsp; the daughter of Fred &amp; Pearl (Basta) Sadie. She married Mike Fregon
 on September 15, 2002, at Garden City. 
Georgia grew up in Richmond, California, and attended Compton High 
School. She attended Beauty College at Richmond, California, and 
finished at Faribault, Minnesota. She moved to Garden City in 1980 and 
was a Beautician at various salons and had owned the Classic Cut Salon. 
 She was a member of Bible Christian Church in Garden City. She enjoyed
 country and Christian music but mostly be the role model and protector 
of any children she came in contact with. 
She is survived by her Husband- Mike Fregon, Son- Mike Fisher of Cedar 
Bluff, Daughter- Michelle Martinez of Valley Center, 4 Sisters- Dianne 
Hansard of Altoona, Iowa, Joni Coffield of Beloit, Suzanne Bauernfeind 
of Cottage Grove, Minnesota &amp; Marianne Rupp of Garden City and 5 
Grandchildren- Darrell Fisher, Mason Martinez, Gracie Martinez, Beau 
Martinez &amp; Bella Martinez. She is preceded in death by her Parents. 
Memorial Service will be at 2:00 PM Thursday at Garnand Funeral Home in 
Garden City with Rev Bob Bates officiating. Memorials are suggested to 
St Jude Children’s Hospital in care of Garnand Funeral Home.

Phillipsburg resident Lena Davis passed away Sunday, February 26, 2023, peacefully in her home at the age of 94. Lena was born November 19, 1928, in Midland, Arkansas, to her parents Bernardo and Angelina (Zagonel) Bucella. She was married to Dean Davis on March, 9, 1957, in Fort Smith, Arkansas. Lena is preceded in death by her husband Dean and parents Bernardo and Angelina. She
 is survived by her daughter Vicky Hewitt and husband Patrick of 
Phillipsburg, granddaughter Desiree Perrel and husband Tim of St. Paul, 
Nebraska, grandsons Cameron Hewitt of Plainville, and Jacee Hewitt of 
Phillipsburg, and three great grandchildren; Ava Hewitt, Austyn Perrel, 
and Ryder Perrel of St. Paul, Nebraska. A funeral service will be 
held at 10:30 on Friday, March 3, 2023, at the Olliff-Boeve Memorial 
Chapel. Lena will be laid to rest at the Fairview Cemetery in 
Phillipsburg. Lena will lie in-state on Wednesday from 12 p.m. to 9 p.m. and Thursday from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice Services Inc. or the United Methodist Church.

Lena Davis

Larry David Newberry, 67, of Hays, Kansas, passed away Sunday November 27, 
2022, at the Kearny County Hospital in Lakin, Kansas. He was born March 
28, 1955, in Garden City, Kansas the son of Fred H. Newberry II and Billie
 J. (Cunningham) Newberry. 
Larry grew up in the Garden City area where he attended several schools 
and graduated from Garden City High School. He worked several jobs in 
Garden City. He then went on to Fort Hays State University, after a year
 he met Deanna Jean Libby. Deanna’s roommate at the time invited Larry 
over to fix her tape player. He kept coming over and they convinced her 
to join square dance lessons. That was when Larry found his forever 
square-dancing partner. A year and a half later, they were married on 
June 1, 1985, at the Smith Center Christian Church. 
Larry enjoyed reading, watching movies, shopping, and square-dancing. He
 was stubborn and strong willed and was always up for conversation. 
Coming from a family of seven children, he learned to be heard; you just
 keep talking! 
Survivors include his wife Deanna of the home; siblings Kaylinn (Tommy) 
Stalford of Nicholson, Pennsylvania, Brenda (Alan) Laudick of Lakin, 
Kansas, Fred (Laurie) Newberry III of Hoisington, Kansas, Laura Thomason
 (Luther Smith) of Lakin, Kansas, and Leslie Newberry of Liberal, Kansas,&nbsp; along with numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. 
He was preceded in death by his father and mother, one brother Lee Dale 
Newberry and his father-in-law and mother-in-law Randall and Jean Libby. 
A memorial service will be held at 11:00 am Saturday, March	11, 2023, at 
the Smith Center Christian Church in Smith Center, Kansas. In lieu of 
flowers, memorial contributions can be sent to Hays Medical Center to be
