Ramona Joy Brozek, 89, La Crosse, Kansas, passed away Tuesday, April 11, 2023, at Aster Estates, Great Bend, Kansas.

Ramona was born March 25, 1934, in rural Bison, Kansas, the daughter 
of Joe and Bertha (Ochs) Moore.&nbsp; She was a lifelong resident of Rush 
County, Kansas.&nbsp; A 1952 graduate of La Crosse High School, La Crosse, 
Kansas, she was a secretary for Golden Belt Telephone Association, Rush 
Center, Kansas, for 32 years before her retirement.

She was a member of the United Methodist Church, and the United Methodist Women (UMW), both of La Crosse, Kansas.

On October 8, 1955, she married Wendell Brozek at the EUB Church, La Crosse, Kansas.&nbsp;

Survivors include:&nbsp; her husband, Wendell Brozek, La Crosse, Kansas; 
one son, Dr. Jeff Brozek (Rhonda), Great Bend, Kansas; one daughter, Jo 
Ellen Schaffstall, Milton, Florida; three grandchildren, Jason Brozek 
(Stephanie), Mission, Kansas, Dr. Jessica Brozek, Newton, Kansas, and 
Caitlin Schaffstall (Matt Harper), Pensacola, Florida; and two sisters, 
Darletha Moore, Wichita, Kansas, and Karen Been, Rogers, Arkansas.

She was preceded in death by her parents; one brother, Warren Moore; and one sister, E. Josephine Williams.

Visitation will be Thursday, April 13, 2023, from 4:00 P.M. to 7:00 
P.M. at the Janousek Funeral Home, La Crosse, Kansas, with the family 
receiving friends from 6:00 P.M. to 7:00 P.M.&nbsp;

Graveside service will be Friday, April 14, 2023, at 10:30 A.M. at 
the La Crosse City Cemetery, La Crosse, Kansas, with Pastor Scott 
Tempero officiating.&nbsp; Interment will be in the La Crosse City Cemetery, 
La Crosse, Kansas.

In lieu of flowers or plants, the family requests memorials to the 
United Methodist Church, La Crosse, Kansas, or Alzheimer’s Disease

Ramona Joy Brozek

Lola M. Cook, 94, passed away on April 9, 2023, in Grinnell, KS. She 
was born on September 8, 1928, in Lewis, KS to Cecil and Lavina (Beery) 
Derley.

As a young girl, Lola moved around a lot but graduated from
 Scott City High School, where she met Royce Cook.  On June 20th, 1947,
 Lola married Royce at the Scott County Courthouse over their lunch 
hour.  The marriage lasted for 71 years.  Lola and Royce had two sons: 
Lee Royce and Verl Ray and a daughter, Sharon Faye. Lola and Royce lived
 in Scott City until 1950 when they moved to Gove County.  In Gove 
County, they lived in a ranch house by the Pyramids.

In Lola’s 
spare time, she loved to be outside working along side Royce on the farm 
and helping him with the cattle and tending to her huge garden and 
picking fruit from her orchard.  If she wasn’t outside, she was inside 
sewing or knitting.  She would sew everything.  She sewed the kid’s 
clothes all the way up to middle school.  Her hands were never still.

Lola
 also worked at a John Deere and Mercantile Store as their bookkeeper in
 Scott City.  With her first paycheck she bought Fostoria Glassware and 
with every paycheck after that we would buy more pieces.  She has 
collected enough Glassware to give a complete set to all of her 
grandchildren.

Lola is survived by her daughter: Sharon (Lyle) 
Zimmerman of Grinnell, KS; grandchildren: Daniel Weis, David Weis, Lance
 (Katie) Weis, Matthew (Meghan) Weis, Kayla Zimmerman, Rebecca Cook, and
 Janel Cook; great-grandchildren: Walter Weis, Sawyer Weis, Oliver Weis,
 Emersynn Weis, Eliot Weis, June Weis, and Daisy Weis; nieces and 
nephews: Kenneth Derley, Royce Derley, Debbie Derley.  She is preceded 
by her parents: Cecil and Lavina; husband: Royce Cook; sons: Lee Royce 
and Verl Ray; brother: Charles (Stella) Derley.

Services will be 
held on Friday, April 14, 2023, at 10:30 AM at Pauls Funeral Home, 
Oberlin.  Visitation will be Thursday, April 13, from 1:00 PM – 7:00 PM 
at the funeral home.  The family will receive guests from 5:00 – 7:00 
PM.  The burial will be in the Oberlin Cemetery.

and Bobbie Blaskey, and one brother, Larry Carpenter.&nbsp; Grandchildren 
left behind were Austin Anschutz, Brandon Loader, Brett Loader, Keaton 
Anschutz, Charlotte Anschutz, Cooper Schwartz, and Layton Schwartz.&nbsp; One
 Great Grandchild left behind was Carter Anschutz, and several nieces 
and nephews.

My wife and their mother, Elberta, was a loving, kind, and giving 
person who always put the needs of her family before her own.&nbsp; She was a
 strong woman known for her faith and instilled the importance of 
family, hard work, and doing what is right. She faced every challenge in
 her life with courage and dignity and was a source of inspiration to us
 all.

You will always be in our hearts, and we will never forget you. We love you so much. Rest in peace.

The memorial service will be held at Concordia Lutheran Church on 
April 22, 2023, at 9:00 a.m. with a reception following the service to 
be held at the BCDI Building in Bushton, KS.

Darlene A. (Jacobs) Sander, age 88, of Hays, Kansas passed away on Wednesday, March 8, 2023, at Hays Medical Center.

She was born March 15, 1934, in Pfeifer, Kansas, to Anthony and Regina (Jacobs) Jacobs. &nbsp;She married John J. Sander on April 16, 1955, in Pfeifer, Kansas. &nbsp;He preceded her in death on May 16, 2012.

Darlene grew up in Pfeifer.&nbsp;She was a member of Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church and a volunteer for many years at the Hays Community Assistance Center. &nbsp;Darlene enjoyed athletics as a young woman and continued her lifelong interest in exercise and staying active with almost twenty years in a water aerobics class where she met and became friends with many of her classmates. &nbsp; &nbsp;

Survivors include her sons, Bryan Sander (Dee) of British Columbia, Canada and&nbsp;John Sander Jr.&nbsp;(Rachel) of Olathe, KS;&nbsp;her&nbsp;daughters, Karen Barnes (Aric) of&nbsp;Humble, TX; Jo Oliver&nbsp;(Russ) of&nbsp;Wichita, KS; Dianne Dye&nbsp;(Phillip) of&nbsp;Shawnee, KS&nbsp;and&nbsp;Eileen Moore&nbsp;(Chris) of&nbsp;Dallas, TX;&nbsp;her&nbsp;sisters,&nbsp;Isabelle&nbsp;Schuckman of&nbsp;Aurora, CO&nbsp;and&nbsp;Carol Moeder&nbsp;of Arvada, CO;&nbsp;her&nbsp;brother-in-law,&nbsp;Elmer Unrein of Bennett, Co;&nbsp;her&nbsp;sister-in-law,&nbsp;Clairella Jacobs of Hays, KS; ten grandchildren and seven great grandchildren. &nbsp;Darlene is also survived by her sister-in-law,&nbsp;and friend, Bernadette (Gary)&nbsp;Arnhold&nbsp;of Hays, KS.

Gary Dean Barber, 81, of Oberlin, passed away April 11, 2023, at the 
Good Samaritan Society of Decatur County. He was born June 22, 1941, in 
Winnwood, MO to William D. and Rose (McQuaid) Barber.

Gary grew up
 in Culbertson, NE. While in the military he received his GED. Gary 
married Carol Jean Hanes on July 3, 1963, in Oberlin. He was a brakeman 
for the Burlington Northern Railroad for years and was known as “Red." Gary was a great mechanic and spent a lot of time restoring old cars and
 motorcycle racing. He loved camping music and dancing. He was a member 
of the Prairie Dog Car Club and was associated with the Kingdom Hall 
Jehovah Witness congregation.

Gary was preceded in death by his 
parents; wife, Carol; son, Shawn Barber; sisters, Marcene Wilson and 
Alma Ann Sweeney, and brothers, Webb Barber and Jodie Barber. He is 
survived by his children: Damon D. Barber of Culbertson, NE, Danette 
(Lee) Kramer of Hastings, NE, Michelle Remmenga of Hastings, NE, and 
Karina (Jon) Fisher of Oberlin, KS; 10 grandchildren; 13 great 
grandchildren, and many nieces, nephews, family, and friends.

The 
family has chosen cremation and services will be held at a later date.

Gary Dean Barber

Rita K. Schwarz, 99, of Grinnell, died Easter Sunday, April 9, 2023. She
 was born December 11, 1923, in Selden, KS, to Frederick and Rosa (Kaus)
 Juenemann. Rita married Walter Schwarz on June 4, 1946. They made their
 home on the Schwarz homestead northeast of Angelus. To this union, 
seven children were born. 
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Walter; brothers, Ben,
 Lawrence, Norbert, Gerald and John; sisters, Sister Rosalyn Juenemann 
and Alvera Long and son-in-law RJ Dickman, Jr. 
After Walter’s passing, Rita moved to Grinnell. She worked for the City 
of Grinnell for 24 years. Rita was a member of the VFW Auxiliary and the
 Daughters of Isabella. She was a church organist at St. Paul’s Angelus,
 and Immaculate Conception, Grinnell, for many years. She was also a 
member of the Altar Society in both parishes. 
She is survived by her children, Victor (Sondra Sanborn), of Menlo, KS, 
Carl (Rebecca), of Colorado Springs, CO, Laurita (Vince) Berland, of 
Abilene, KS, Leona Dickman, of Grinnell, KS, Eugene (Linda), of Oakley, 
KS, Robert (Nancy), of Grinnell, and Rosalie (Joe) Capo, of Atwood, KS; 
siblings, Melvin Juenemann and Sister Carolyn Juenemann; 26 
grandchildren, 54 great grandchildren and 6 great-great grandchildren. 
Visitation is 5-7:00 p.m., with a Vigil at 7:00 p.m., Thursday, April 
13, 2023, at the Immaculate Conception Parish Center, Grinnell. Funeral

 </figure>Rita K. Schwarz, 99, of Grinnell, died Easter Sunday, April 9, 2023. She
 was born December 11, 1923, in Selden, KS, to Frederick and Rosa (Kaus)
 Juenemann. Rita married Walter Schwarz on June 4, 1946. They made their
 home on the Schwarz homestead northeast of Angelus. To this union, 
seven children were born. 
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Walter; brothers, Ben,
 Lawrence, Norbert, Gerald and John; sisters, Sister Rosalyn Juenemann 
and Alvera Long and son-in-law RJ Dickman, Jr. 
After Walter’s passing, Rita moved to Grinnell. She worked for the City 
of Grinnell for 24 years. Rita was a member of the VFW Auxiliary and the
 Daughters of Isabella. She was a church organist at St. Paul’s Angelus,
 and Immaculate Conception, Grinnell, for many years. She was also a 
member of the Altar Society in both parishes. 
She is survived by her children, Victor (Sondra Sanborn), of Menlo, KS, 
Carl (Rebecca), of Colorado Springs, CO, Laurita (Vince) Berland, of 
Abilene, KS, Leona Dickman, of Grinnell, KS, Eugene (Linda), of Oakley, 
KS, Robert (Nancy), of Grinnell, and Rosalie (Joe) Capo, of Atwood, KS; 
siblings, Melvin Juenemann and Sister Carolyn Juenemann; 26 
grandchildren, 54 great grandchildren and 6 great-great grandchildren. 
Visitation is 5-7:00 p.m., with a Vigil at 7:00 p.m., Thursday, April 
13, 2023, at the Immaculate Conception Parish Center, Grinnell. Funeral 
Mass is at 10:30 a.m. Friday, April 14, 2023, at St. Paul Catholic

Lawrence J. Augustine

On Monday, April 10th, 2023, Lewis Max McClay passed away peacefully at the age of 88. Max was preceded in death by his wife Farrell (Keas).&nbsp; Max and Farrell were married for 62 years. Max McClay is survived by his four daughters Renie McClay (Mike Beasley), Kristy McClay, Teri Rounsaville (George), and Merri Kruzan (Phil).&nbsp; He is also survived by grandchildren Nicholas Gauss (Rylan Deer), Philip Kruzan Jr.&nbsp; (Ellen), and Tyler Kruzan.&nbsp; Additionally, he was a very proud great-grandfather to Parker Max Kruzan and loved his nieces and nephews.

Moreover, Max was preceded in death by his sisters Nanette McDonald Morel, Maurine (Renie) Francke, and Naomi Hartnett.&nbsp;&nbsp; He also was preceded in death by his parents Velda McClay Morin, father Thyril McClay, stepfather Alvin Morin.

Max was born to Thyril and Velda McClay in Plainville, Kansas, on July 18, 1934.&nbsp; Max and Farrell went to high school together.&nbsp; Max was very involved in school sports, golf and basketball being his favorites. After graduation, he attended business school at Brown Mackie College in Salina, Kansas.

Max worked a variety of jobs learning great life skills.&nbsp; After leaving his job at Globe Oil he found his passion in insurance sales and management at Federated Insurance.&nbsp; &nbsp;Here he was promoted and moved to multiple locations,&nbsp; from Great Bend, Kansas, to Springfield, Missouri, to West Des Moines, Iowa and back to Springfield, Missouri.&nbsp; Federated became his second family. Max loved working with customers, and he also took great pleasure in working with his coworkers and the teams he managed. He retired at 60 and “wanted to travel while he could still carry his luggage.”

Wherever they moved, Max and Farrell always felt that Springfield was their home.&nbsp; This location was perfect for Max’s many hobbies, including golfing, traveling, hunting, fishing, camping and boating. He also enjoyed woodworking. When he wasn’t crafting a piece of furniture for one of his kids and grandkids, he was probably working on wood working projects for Brentwood Christian Church. Max also served on this organization’s leadership board.&nbsp; He and Farrell loved this religious community and were instrumental in its growth, including serving on the minister selection committee. He was also a member of Lion’s Club.

From Max’s family:&nbsp; Our Dad and Papa had an amazing heart.&nbsp; He cared for our mother for many years until her Alzheimer’s advanced.&nbsp;&nbsp; The day we moved mom to nursing care it broke his heart. Then it broke again the day she passed in 2016. We know he is happy to be reunited with his sweetie.&nbsp;&nbsp; He demonstrated his love for his daughters and grandkids on a regular basis.&nbsp; He would share new pictures and stories daily with anyone who would listen.

We thank the staff at Fremont Assisted Living for their amazing care. He adopted many new grandkids and daughters there among the employees, as they loved him dearly.&nbsp; He knew he had the greatest team of healthcare workers ever!!

Lewis Max McClay

Rocky&nbsp;L. Yoder, 68, of Russell, Kansas, passed away Monday,&nbsp;March 6, 2023, at the Hays Medical Center in Hays, Kansas.

Rocky was born November 17, 1954, in Cheyenne&nbsp;Wells, Colorado. &nbsp;He was one&nbsp;of five children born to Wilbur&nbsp;and&nbsp;Phyllis (Bedker) Yoder. &nbsp;At the age of 12, he started working in construction with his father. &nbsp;At 16, he worked&nbsp;at&nbsp;Jerry's Texaco Station&nbsp;changing tires and assisting with the pumps. &nbsp;In high school, he became interested in Rodeo&nbsp;bull riding. &nbsp;He graduated from Littleton High School.&nbsp;&nbsp;He then attended two years at Sterling College before he started working at the Arabian Horse Registry in Illinois. Later he returned to college and got a Degree in Agriculture Science. He moved to Russell, Kansas, in 2004.

Rocky&nbsp;was united in marriage to&nbsp;Brenda Schmidtberger on October 1, 2011, in Hays, Kansas. &nbsp;They made their home in Russell.

Rocky worked at the Land&nbsp;O Lakes where he did the rations for cattle feed. &nbsp;He was a member of&nbsp;St. John Lutheran Church in&nbsp;Russell and&nbsp;St. Fidelis Catholic Church in Victoria,&nbsp;Kansas. &nbsp;He was known for his artistic wood carvings and had&nbsp;Art shows at the&nbsp;Deines&nbsp;Cultural&nbsp;Center and the 4-H Building in Russell.

Rocky’s surviving family include his&nbsp;wife of 11 years, Brenda of the home;&nbsp;two brothers, Larry Yoder (Karen) of Hugoton, Kansas and Randy Yoder (Shelley) of&nbsp;Wauneta, Nebraska; sister, Nancy&nbsp;Noble&nbsp;(Steve) of Lincoln, Nebraska; and many nieces and nephews and friends.

Rocky was preceded in death by his parents and sister Melody Burr.

Celebration of Rocky’s Life will be held at 11:00 AM,&nbsp;Friday, April 21, 2023, at St. John Lutheran Church of Russell. &nbsp;Cremation has taken place.&nbsp;Condolences may be&nbsp;sent to Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary, who is in charge of these arrangements.

Darrell Lee Braden died peacefully April 6, 2023, after a courageous fight with cancer in St. Francis, Kansas.&nbsp;

Kenneth and Wanda Braden celebrated Darrell's birth in 1958 in Phoenix, Arizona.&nbsp;

While living in Phoenix, Darrell began his passion for playing baseball from the time he was 5 years old.&nbsp;

Later in life, he would coach his son Dallas Braden, who went on to pitch for the Oakland As.&nbsp;

The family moved to Show Low where Darrell attended both grade school and high school.&nbsp;

After school Darrell was a bar room boxer, bull rider and loved to ride motorcycles.&nbsp;

He moved to Stockton, California, where he bought his first Harley and riding became his passion.&nbsp;

Darrell had several occupations and excelled in all of them. He was a Jack of all trades.&nbsp;

Darrell was an active member in AA. He had just received his medallion for celebrating 36 years of sobriety.&nbsp;

He became a sponsor to many, this was a group that became a family to
 him. He was highly thought of by this family and will be dearly 
missed.&nbsp;

Darrell moved to Bird City, Kansas, to pursue a life with his girlfriend Robin and get out of the rat race of big city life.&nbsp;

Darrell lived life his way and made many friends and acquaintances 
along the way. Knowing Darrell made you a better person. He was a giving
 and understanding individual. The loss of Darrell will leave a huge 
void in the lives of those who knew and loved him.&nbsp;

Darrell was preceded in death by his brother Dennis Braden Russeli, Stanley Russell and mother Wanda Exum.&nbsp;

Darrell was survived by girlfriend Robin Kauakahi, sons Dennis and 
Dallas, father Kenneth Braden (Judy) brother Cody Braden (Jeannie) 
sister Vicci Giger (Jim) brother Sam Russell (Tammy) sister Dani Jo 
Clegg (William) brother Carl Russell (Lori) brother Rod Russell and

Charles V. “Chuck” Giebler, 92, Hays, died Saturday, April 8, 2023, at Via Christi Village.

He was born April 11, 1930, in Hays, one
 of ten children of Martin and Susanna (Kisner) Giebler.&nbsp; Chuck attended
 Catherine Grade School, St. Joseph Military Academy, and was a graduate
 of Hays High School with the class of 1948.&nbsp; He was a Staff Sergeant 
and a flight mechanic in the U.S. Air Force.&nbsp; On May 16, 1953, he was 
united in marriage to Rose Ann Befort in Hays, and they celebrated 
nearly 66 years of marriage before she preceded him in death on March 5,
 2019.&nbsp; With his wife, he owned and operated Centennial Carpets and 
Putt-Putt Golf.&nbsp; Chuck was a member of St. Nicholas of Myra Catholic 
Church and the American Legion.&nbsp; He was an avid sports fan, always 
listening to TMP-M Monarchs, Kansas City Chiefs, and Kansas City Royals 
games.&nbsp; He enjoyed Putt-Putt golf, playing cards, polka dancing, tending
 to his beautiful yard, and fishing with his grandchildren.

Survivors include his two sons, Charles
 Giebler and wife Carla of Hays and Kevin Giebler and wife Sue Ann of 
Dallas, TX, daughter, Wanda Rohr and husband Mike of Hays, five 
grandchildren, Christa Beiker and husband Josh, Jason Dreiling and wife 
Christina, Curtis Giebler and wife Natasha, Alex Giebler, and Kate 
Giebler, six great grandchildren, Harper and Avery Dreiling, Taryn and 
Avryn Beiker, Lucas Burton, and Blake Shelton, and numerous nieces and 
nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Rose Ann, four brothers, and five sisters. 

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 
10:00 am on Tuesday, April 18, 2023, at St. Nicholas of Myra Catholic 
Church with Fr. Damian Richards officiating.&nbsp; Burial will follow in St. 
Joseph Cemetery with military honors by the Hays VFW Honor Guard.&nbsp; 
Visitation will be from 5:00 pm until 7:00 on Monday and from 9:00 am 
until 9:45 on Tuesday, all at Hays Memorial Chapel Funeral Home.&nbsp; A 
vigil service and rosary will be at 6:00 pm on Monday at the funeral 
home.&nbsp;

 2019.&nbsp; With his wife, he owned and operated Centennial Carpets and 
Putt-Putt Golf.&nbsp; Chuck was a member of St. Nicholas of Myra Catholic 
Church and the American Legion.&nbsp; He was an avid sports fan, always 
listening to TMP-M Monarchs, Kansas City Chiefs, and Kansas City Royals 
games.&nbsp; He enjoyed Putt-Putt golf, playing cards, polka dancing, tending
 to his beautiful yard, and fishing with his grandchildren.Survivors include his two sons, Charles
 Giebler and wife Carla of Hays and Kevin Giebler and wife Sue Ann of 
Dallas, TX, daughter, Wanda Rohr and husband Mike of Hays, five 
grandchildren, Christa Beiker and husband Josh, Jason Dreiling and wife 
Christina, Curtis Giebler and wife Natasha, Alex Giebler, and Kate 
Giebler, six great grandchildren, Harper and Avery Dreiling, Taryn and 
Avryn Beiker, Lucas Burton, and Blake Shelton, and numerous nieces and 
nephews.He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Rose Ann, four brothers, and five sisters. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 
10:00 am on Tuesday, April 18, 2023, at St. Nicholas of Myra Catholic 
Church with Fr. Damian Richards officiating.&nbsp; Burial will follow in St.

Phillipsburg resident William Frederick Schick passed away April 10, 2023, at the Hays Medical Center, Hays, KS at the age of 67.

He was born August 10, 1955, in Phillipsburg, Kansas, the son of Max and Norma (Wagner) Schick.

Survivors include his parents, two brothers Merlyn and Steven Schick 
of Phillipsburg, two sisters Anita Powell and her husband Joel of Colby,
 Nancy Jenner and her husband Mike of Prairie View, along with many

Francis Frank Unrein, age 89, of Gorham, Kansas, passed away Sunday, April 9, 2023, at the Girard Medical Center in Girard, Kansas.

He was&nbsp;born October 8, 1933, in Schoenchen, Kansas, to Peter and Agatha (Leikam) Unrein. &nbsp;He married Ellen (Nowak) on February 1, 1958, at Gorham. &nbsp;She preceded him&nbsp;in death on September 12, 1982.&nbsp;Then&nbsp;he married Charlene (Braun) on May 9, 1998, at Victoria, Kansas.&nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp;

He was lineman-in-charge at Midwest Energy for 38 years and retired in 1996. &nbsp;He grew up and attended school in Schoenchen then moved to Gorham in 1957. &nbsp;He was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Gorham 3rd&nbsp;degree Knights of Columbus, and a volunteer on the Gorham Fire Department for 15 years. He enjoyed restoring cars, riding motorcycles, playing cards, C-B radios, &nbsp;and doing wiring jobs on the side. &nbsp;

Francis Frank Unrein

Jerry J. Kinser, age 77, of Clyde, KS, left this earthly life on 
Friday, April 7, 2023, at the North Central Kansas Medical Center, 
Concordia, KS.&nbsp;

Jerry was born May 21, 1945, in Norton, KS to 
Joseph and Josephine (Von Schuetz) Kinser. The eldest of six children, 
he grew up on his family farm, was active in 4-H, band, and loved all 
sports.

He graduated from Jennings High School in 1963 and then 
Fort Hays State University, where he met his wife, Josephine (Sandi) 
Marshall. They married March 5, 1966, and had two daughters, Jolene and 
Janell.

He received his master’s degree in education technology 
from Kansas State University. Jerry enjoyed teaching elementary students
 in WaKeeney, Weskan, Jamestown, and Concordia. After retiring, Jerry 
was an instructor at the Alternative High School in Concordia, taught 
driver's education to students in several districts, and was a 
substitute teacher at Clifton-Clyde. 

In addition to teaching, 
Jerry loved umpiring baseball, refereeing basketball and football, and 
especially enjoyed refereeing volleyball with his daughter, Janell. Once
 retired from that, he took to harassing the umpires and referees at his
 grandchildren’s sporting events.

He was a member of First 
Christian Church in Concordia for more than 38 years and served as an 
elder there for many years and served on the board of directors for 
Alpha Christian Children’s Home.

Jerry was preceded in death by 
his parents, wife (Sandi), brother (Tim Kinser), sister (Kay Ann Reedy),
 brother-in-law (John Stanley). 

He is survived by his daughters 
Jolene Girard (Patrick) of Clyde, and Janell McMillan (Scott) of Topeka;
 grandchildren Paige Shafferman (Jeff) and son Jack; Stephen McMillan 
(Emmelina) and children Elizabeth, Danny, and Nova; Dorian Fahey (Brett)
 and daughters Evyn, Isla, and Greer; Joseph McMillan (Susan) and 
children Abigail, Thomas, and Clarissa; Elias Girard (Fiancée, Katherine
 Holcomb); Adria Girard; Scott McMillan; siblings Linda Stanley, Janet 
Morrin (Damon), John Kinser (Kay), sister-in-law Mary Kinser-Cressler 
(Russell), brother-in-law Tom &nbsp;Reedy (JoAnn), and several nieces and 
nephews.

Jerry’s wish was to be cremated, and a memorial service 
is planned for Friday, April 21 at 10:30 a.m. at Chaput Mortuary in 
Clyde, KS officiated by Mr. Bernard Newell with a luncheon following at 
the Clyde Senior Center. A private family burial of the cremains is 
planned for the following day.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are 
suggested to Alpha Christian Children’s Home or Park Villa Nursing Home

Jerry J. Kinser

Norman L. Nelson died peacefully at his home in Norton, Kansas, at 
the age of 85 on April 8th, 2023.  He was tended by his exceptional 
caregiver of seven years, Magda Dolotshahi of Great Bend.

Norman
 was born October 29, 1937, to Stanley Swan Nelson and Leila Mae 
(Scholl) Nelson, Long Island, Kansas. His was a home birth, delivered by
 well-known Dr. Herbert S. Bennie (“Dr. Bennie”) of Almena, Kansas, at 
the Nelson family house near land homesteaded in 1884 by Norman’s 
first-generation Swedish immigrant great-grandparents, Swan and Nellie 
Nelson. Norman’s official residence remained within 21 miles of his 
birthplace for his entire lifetime and yet his life reached far.

Norman
 attended Willowdale one-room country school, moving to Almena Grade 
School as a third grader and graduating from Almena Rural High School in
 1956. In high school, he was an officer in Future Farmers of America 
(FFA) and played football. Norman attended one semester at Kansas State 
University, Manhattan, Kansas, before returning home to Long Island to 
farm with his father as Nelson &amp; Son Farm.

On Easter 
Sunday, April 21, 1957, Norman married Gloria Ann Van Patten, Almena, 
Kansas, daughter of Loren and Mildred Van Patten of Almena. Norman and 
Gloria’s first home was a tiny one, a mile east of his parents’ home 
outside of Long Island, Kansas. They had four children: Sally, Terry, 
Troy and Lisa. They were married almost 66 years.

With a 
philosophy of dogged hard work, calculated risk-taking, business 
diversification and service, Norman, his father, his sons and their 
families built a business, over Norman’s adult lifetime, from 
approximately 500 acres and a few livestock to a multi-faceted 
agriculturally-based business that serves the family and counties 
throughout western Kansas and southwestern Nebraska with associations 
that reach much farther.

Nelson Farms Inc. was an early 
farm operation to realize the necessity of legal incorporation and 
gradually diversified into multiple entities including crop production, 
grain storage, fertilizer and chemicals, livestock production, feed 
processing, banking, and energy. Norman was innovative and quietly 
instrumental in changing the marketing system for beef to encourage a 
premium product which resulted in industry-wide progress.

In
 1990, First State Bank of Norton was purchased with a focus on 
agriculture customers. Locations in Hill City, Hoxie, Plainville, KS and
 Holdrege, NE, would follow. A farmer buying a bank was an innovation in
 itself, at the time, and was accomplished with much skill and 
determination.

Norman served on the boards of Rural 
Electric Association, Almena Irrigation District and served as a Norton 
County Commissioner.  He was a member of the Free Masons and Shriners.

In
 1995, Norman was involved in a chance business investment that 
converted condominiums in Titusville, FL, overlooking the Indian River 
and Cape Canaveral. On an investigative trip, he purchased two units for
 personal investment that inadvertently became the inspiration for 20+ 
years of winters in Florida where he and Gloria developed many lasting 
friendships and entertained leagues of their children, grandchildren, 
and other guests for fun in the sun. Soon, Norman bought a small citrus 
grove based on the premise that he liked fresh-squeezed orange juice and
 noticed that it was scarce in Florida, ironically.

In his 
later years, Norman purchased ranches in WaKeeney, KS, Paradise, KS, 
and, most recently, the Pyramid Ranch in Gove County, KS, which includes
 Monument Rock.

Also in their later years, Norman and 
Gloria began to focus more on making a lasting impact on the future of 
Norton, Kansas. They loved and believed in Norton and invested 
accordingly. They spearheaded the renovation of the historic Lyon House 
and Heaton Building and facilitated the construction of the 
award-winning Sleep Inn Hotel, all in Norton. They were fundamental to 
the establishment of the Norton Community Foundation. Norman could be a 
tough negotiator, but he was silently generous. There are innumerable 
times that he funded projects and emergency needs, large and small, in 
and around the community, the details of which few people will ever 
know.

Norman adored playing cards, from his teen years 
until the day the pandemic closed the doors of the Norton Senior Citizen
 Center (he played cards on iPad, alone, for a while afterward). He also
 loved fishing; western movies, music, and books; playing the stock 
market and commodities markets; growing vegetables and oranges; his 
nickname “Stormin’ Norman”; watching old westerns and sleeping in his 
easy chair; and, he was wild about his grandchildren, dancing the 
chicken dance with them among other endearing antics. He knew all his 
great children by personality even after he could no longer remember 
them by name.

Norman Nelson was a “bigger than life” person and will be greatly missed by many.

Norman
 is preceded in death by his parents; a brother-in-law Jim Vander Lugt 
and dear friends that include Floyd Fairleigh of Fairleigh Feed Yards, 
Scott City; Wayne Schnuerle of Almena; Don Stutterheim, Bob Yeager and 
Bill Sharp of Norton; Ben Boell of Holdrege; Everett McKenna of Palco 
and Bernard Griffiths of Long Island. He is survived by his wife Gloria,
 who lives with their youngest daughter, Lisa, two sisters, Lolita Jean 
Coupe (Dick) - Dallas, Texas, and Nathalee Rae VanderLugt - Edgerton, 
Minnesota. Their children Sally Nelson - Fairway, KS; N. Terry Nelson 
(Marcia) - Almena, KS; Troy Nelson (Denise) – Lewis, KS; Lisa Brooksher 
(Bruce) – Paradise, KS/Titusville, FL; Grandchildren: Clarke Nelson 
(Julia); Stanton Nelson; Kayla Burr (Dustin); Kamille Whited; James (JT)
 Whited; Bo Nelson (Erica); Carson Brooksher and 11 great grandchildren,
 a niece, four nephews, and many great friends.

A 
Celebration of Life for Norman Nelson is to be held April 22 at 11 am,

 </figure>Norman L. Nelson died peacefully at his home in Norton, Kansas, at 
the age of 85 on April 8th, 2023. He was tended by his exceptional 
caregiver of seven years, Magda Dolotshahi of Great Bend.Norman
 was born October 29, 1937, to Stanley Swan Nelson and Leila Mae 
(Scholl) Nelson, Long Island, Kansas. His was a home birth, delivered by
 well-known Dr. Herbert S. Bennie (“Dr. Bennie”) of Almena, Kansas, at 
the Nelson family house near land homesteaded in 1884 by Norman’s 
first-generation Swedish immigrant great-grandparents, Swan and Nellie 
Nelson. Norman’s official residence remained within 21 miles of his 
birthplace for his entire lifetime and yet his life reached far.Norman
 attended Willowdale one-room country school, moving to Almena Grade 
School as a third grader and graduating from Almena Rural High School in
 1956. In high school, he was an officer in Future Farmers of America 
(FFA) and played football. Norman attended one semester at Kansas State 
University, Manhattan, Kansas, before returning home to Long Island to 
farm with his father as Nelson &amp; Son Farm.On Easter 
Sunday, April 21, 1957, Norman married Gloria Ann Van Patten, Almena, 
Kansas, daughter of Loren and Mildred Van Patten of Almena. Norman and 
Gloria’s first home was a tiny one, a mile east of his parents’ home 
outside of Long Island, Kansas. They had four children: Sally, Terry, 
Troy and Lisa. They were married almost 66 years.With a 
philosophy of dogged hard work, calculated risk-taking, business 
diversification and service, Norman, his father, his sons and their 
families built a business, over Norman’s adult lifetime, from 
approximately 500 acres and a few livestock to a multi-faceted 
agriculturally-based business that serves the family and counties 
throughout western Kansas and southwestern Nebraska with associations 
that reach much farther.Nelson Farms Inc. was an early 
farm operation to realize the necessity of legal incorporation and 
gradually diversified into multiple entities including crop production, 
grain storage, fertilizer and chemicals, livestock production, feed 
processing, banking, and energy. Norman was innovative and quietly 
instrumental in changing the marketing system for beef to encourage a 
premium product which resulted in industry-wide progress.In
 1990, First State Bank of Norton was purchased with a focus on 
agriculture customers. Locations in Hill City, Hoxie, Plainville, KS and
 Holdrege, NE, would follow. A farmer buying a bank was an innovation in
 itself, at the time, and was accomplished with much skill and 
determination.Norman served on the boards of Rural 
Electric Association, Almena Irrigation District and served as a Norton 
County Commissioner. He was a member of the Free Masons and Shriners.In
 1995, Norman was involved in a chance business investment that 
converted condominiums in Titusville, FL, overlooking the Indian River 
and Cape Canaveral. On an investigative trip, he purchased two units for
 personal investment that inadvertently became the inspiration for 20+ 
years of winters in Florida where he and Gloria developed many lasting 
friendships and entertained leagues of their children, grandchildren, 
and other guests for fun in the sun. Soon, Norman bought a small citrus 
grove based on the premise that he liked fresh-squeezed orange juice and
 noticed that it was scarce in Florida, ironically.In his 
later years, Norman purchased ranches in WaKeeney, KS, Paradise, KS, 
and, most recently, the Pyramid Ranch in Gove County, KS, which includes
 Monument Rock.Also in their later years, Norman and 
Gloria began to focus more on making a lasting impact on the future of 
Norton, Kansas. They loved and believed in Norton and invested 
accordingly. They spearheaded the renovation of the historic Lyon House 
and Heaton Building and facilitated the construction of the 
award-winning Sleep Inn Hotel, all in Norton. They were fundamental to 
the establishment of the Norton Community Foundation. Norman could be a 
tough negotiator, but he was silently generous. There are innumerable 
times that he funded projects and emergency needs, large and small, in 
and around the community, the details of which few people will ever 
know.Norman adored playing cards, from his teen years 
until the day the pandemic closed the doors of the Norton Senior Citizen
 Center (he played cards on iPad, alone, for a while afterward). He also
 loved fishing; western movies, music, and books; playing the stock 
market and commodities markets; growing vegetables and oranges; his 
nickname “Stormin’ Norman”; watching old westerns and sleeping in his 
easy chair; and, he was wild about his grandchildren, dancing the 
chicken dance with them among other endearing antics. He knew all his 
great children by personality even after he could no longer remember 
them by name.Norman Nelson was a “bigger than life” person and will be greatly missed by many.Norman
 is preceded in death by his parents; a brother-in-law Jim Vander Lugt 
and dear friends that include Floyd Fairleigh of Fairleigh Feed Yards, 
Scott City; Wayne Schnuerle of Almena; Don Stutterheim, Bob Yeager and 
Bill Sharp of Norton; Ben Boell of Holdrege; Everett McKenna of Palco 
and Bernard Griffiths of Long Island. He is survived by his wife Gloria,
 who lives with their youngest daughter, Lisa, two sisters, Lolita Jean 
Coupe (Dick) - Dallas, Texas, and Nathalee Rae VanderLugt - Edgerton, 
Minnesota. Their children Sally Nelson - Fairway, KS; N. Terry Nelson 
(Marcia) - Almena, KS; Troy Nelson (Denise) – Lewis, KS; Lisa Brooksher 
(Bruce) – Paradise, KS/Titusville, FL; Grandchildren: Clarke Nelson 
(Julia); Stanton Nelson; Kayla Burr (Dustin); Kamille Whited; James (JT)
 Whited; Bo Nelson (Erica); Carson Brooksher and 11 great grandchildren,
 a niece, four nephews, and many great friends.A

Edwin Adolph Scheck, 97, of Russell, Kansas, died on Sunday, April 9, 2023, at the Russell Regional Hospital in Russell, Kansas.

Edwin was born on September 3, 1925, on the family farm in rural 
Ellis County, Kansas, the son of Joseph and Magdalen (Windholz) Scheck.&nbsp;
 He grew up on the farm north of Walker, Kansas, and attended school in 
Victoria, Kansas.&nbsp; He joined the U.S. Army and served during World War 
II.&nbsp; He met, fell in love and was united in marriage to Rita Rose 
Bellendir on August 08, 1949, at the St. Fidelis Catholic Church in 
Victoria, Kansas.&nbsp; From this union, Edwin and Rita were blessed with 3 
children, sons Gerald and Stephen and daughter Karen.&nbsp; He enjoyed 
working the family farm and also worked for the city of Russell for 37 
years in the water department.&nbsp; He was a longtime member of St. Mary 
Queen of Angels Catholic Church in Russell and was also a 3rd and 4th
 degree Knights of Columbus member.&nbsp; He was also a member of the Russell
 V.F.W. Post #6240 and American Legion Post #99.&nbsp; He enjoyed working 
with wood, gardening and fishing but most of all enjoyed spending time 
with his family and friends.

Surviving family include his sons Gerald Scheck of New Port Coast, 
California and Stephen Scheck of Salem, Oregon and daughter Karen Scheck
 of Topeka, Kansas; sister Lena Mader of Victoria, Kansas; 3 
grandchildren Thomas and Trevor Scheck and Amelia Scheck; and great 
granddaughter Lucy Scheck.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Rita on December 06, 
2013, brothers Peter, Seraphine, Victor, Melvin, Gilbert and Linus 
Scheck; sisters Bertha Denning, Mary Weigel, Rubina Dinkel, Katie Scheck
 and Leona Scheck

A celebration of the funeral mass for Edwin will be held at 10:00 
A.M. on Friday, April 14, 2023, at the St. Mary Queen of Angels Catholic
 Church in Russell, Kansas.&nbsp; Burial will follow at the St. Mary Catholic
 Cemetery in Russell, Kansas.&nbsp; A vigil and rosary will be held at 7 P.M.
 on Thursday, April 13, 2023, at the church.&nbsp; Visitation will be from 9 
A.M. to 5 P.M. on Thursday, April 13, 2023, at the mortuary.&nbsp;

Carl Eugene Maddy, 88, passed away on December 31, 2022, following 
the passing of his wife, Dolores Maxine (Bauer) Maddy, 87, on July 9, 
2022, both at Chisolm Place Assisted Living in Wichita, Kan. They were 
joined in union on August 28, 1955, in Dighton, Kan., and were blessed 
with four children, Steven (Clarissa) Maddy of Wichita, Terri Kennard of
 Wichita, Michael Maddy of Larned, and Lynette Gallentine, whom 
proceeded them in death, and many other family members.

A celebration of life for the couple will be held at 11:30 a.m. 
Saturday, April 22, 2023, at Golden Belt Memorial Park, with Pastor Matt
 Wimmer presiding. Honors for Carl will be conducted by both the 
National Guard and the Great Bend Fire Department. Memorials have been 
designated in Dolores’ name to the Central Baptist Church and in Carl’s 
name to the Good Shepherd Hospice, all in care of Bryant Funeral Home.

Carl and Delores Maddy

Rosemary Walt, age 83, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, November 22, 2022.&nbsp;

Rosemary was born near Quinter, KS on August 23, 1939, to Anton and Rosalia (Giebler) Dinkel. She was the youngest of eleven children. When she was young, her family moved to a farm north of Collyer. Growing up on the farm, she learned to garden, which she still loved. Her mother taught her to crochet. She spent many hours crocheting afghans. All her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren have one to remember her by. The last few years, she crocheted several stuffed animals for her great-grandkids. She was an excellent cook. We enjoyed many delicious meals, especially during the holidays.&nbsp;

Rosemary attended school in Collyer, where she graduated salutatorian of her class in 1957. After high school, she worked at the Coop in Collyer as a bookkeeper. She married Ted Walt Jr. on October 7, 1961, at Saint Michael's Catholic Church in Collyer. They had three children, Larry, Terry, and Patty. They were lifelong residents of Collyer.&nbsp;

Ted and Rosemary opened Walt's Repair in 1963 where she worked as the secretary and bookkeeper until she retired in 1996. After her retirement, she frequently helped Ted on the farm. They also enjoyed training bird dogs. They loved traveling to competitions and controlled hunts with their dogs. For many years, Rosemary and her sister Rosalie made custom cakes ranging from small, simple cakes to large, elaborate wedding cakes.&nbsp;

Rosemary was a member of Saint Michael's Alter Society, the American Legion Auxiliary, and Gove County Medical Center Ladies Auxiliary, where she volunteered at the gift shop for several years.&nbsp;

Rosemary's greatest joy was her family. She was thrilled to have her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren living near or in Collyer. She had a unique relationship with each of us and loved us unconditionally. She especially loved having her great-grandkids come to visit.&nbsp;

Rosemary was preceded in death by her parents, husband Ted, and siblings Paul, Bertha, Leo, Beata, Marcella, Don, Rosalie, Alvin and Clarence. She is survived by her brother Bob of Quinter; her children, Larry and wife Angie, their children Blaine and wife Ryan and their children Jordi and Bowen, Derek and wife Nicole and their daughter Kendall all of Collyer; Terry and wife Laura, their children Tyler and wife Cristina and their children Cody, Taylor and Cayden, Keith and wife Merry and their children Greyson, McCoy, Lachlan and Aislinn all of Collyer, and&nbsp;Brittney of Colby; Patty Knop and husband Jeff, their children Karly Snyder and husband Adam and their daughter Rylan all of Collyer, Nikki Jansonius and husband Logan and their son Lark of Colby; and many friends and relatives.

Mass of Christian Memorial will be held at St. Michael Catholic 
Church, Collyer, KS, on Saturday, January 21, 2023, at 10:30 am. 
Visitation will be held at St. Michael Catholic Church, Collyer, KS, on

Long<a></a>time Sharon Springs, KS resident Maynard Lester&nbsp;Giersdorf, 88, passed away Saturday, April 8th, 2023, at Greeley County Long Term Care in Tribune, KS. He was born on October 15, 1934, in Spalding, NE to Lester and Lilly (Buhlman)&nbsp;Giersdorf.

He grew up&nbsp;in Grand Island, NE where he attended school. &nbsp;As a young adult, he enjoyed racing motorcycles on dirt roads, highways, and even on railroad tracks where he won many trophies.&nbsp;

On December 19, 1968, Maynard and Frances Darlene&nbsp;Bielser&nbsp;were married in Sharon Springs, KS. Together, they raised four children, Robert, Brenda, Theresa, and Clarissa. They were active members at The Elk’s in Goodland, KS and shared many excursions and travel adventures with their children.

Maynard was very passionate about agriculture and people. He was a well-known fertilizer salesman for over 50 years where he had many loyal customers. He also enjoyed raising cattle, hogs, and his own wheat crop. When he wasn’t working, a few of his favorite pastimes were hunting, camping, boating, and spending time with his grandkids.&nbsp;

When he wasn’t working, a few of his favorite pastimes were hunting, camping, boating, and spending time with his grandkids.&nbsp;Preceding him in death is his wife, Darlene on April 13, 2007, his parents, and his sister Laura.Surviving family members include Robert (Susan)&nbsp;Bielser&nbsp;of Cape Coral, FL, Brenda&nbsp;Stricker&nbsp;of Grand Island, NE,&nbsp;Theresa (Ronnie) Hill of Sharon Springs, KS, and Clarissa (Justin)&nbsp;Kriegh&nbsp;of Sharon Springs, KS.&nbsp;He is also survived by&nbsp;9 grandkids and 13 great-grandkids.Visitation will be Tuesday, April 11, 2023, from 5:00&nbsp;to 7:00&nbsp;PM MT at Koons-Russell Funeral Home in Sharon Springs, KS.&nbsp;Funeral service will be Wednesday, April 12, at 10:30 AM MT at Gateway to Grace Church in Sharon Springs, KS.
