Shirley Kay Gaston, 83, Hays, died Tuesday, April 25, 2023 at Hays Good Samaritan Society.

She was born August 23, 1939 in Wichita, the daughter of Clifford Wayne and Ruth Oneita (Newton) Bolinger. 

She graduated from Wichita West High School in 1957, where she was a cheerleader, and on April 12, 1963 she was united in marriage to James Douglas “Doug” Gaston in Wichita. They celebrated 25 years of marriage before he preceded her in death on June 22, 1988. 

Doug and Shirley lived in several towns throughout Kansas before moving to Hays in 1985. 

After raising her family, Shirley began her professional career and worked in the personnel department at Fort Hays State University until her retirement in 2002. 

Shirley had a strong faith in God and was an early member of Agape Southern Baptist Church, which is now Crosspoint Church. She enjoyed music, playing piano, watching sports, traveling, sewing, crafts, cooking, and baking. Her children and grandchildren were the center of her life.

Survivors include her sons, Troy Gaston and wife Marty of Sanford, NC and Terry Gaston and wife Tami of Gering, NE, five grandchildren, Leanne Kenner and husband Jonathan, Jason Gaston and wife Katie, Brett Gaston, Aaron Gaston and wife Abigail and Christopher Gaston and wife Kylee, and five great-grandchildren, Holt Gaston, Annie Gaston, Parks Gaston, Colby Kenner, and Rhys Gaston.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Doug, and a son, Richard Gaston.

Funeral services will be at 10:00 am on Friday, May 5, 2023 at Hays Memorial Chapel Funeral Home, with Pastor Micah Sanderson officiating. Visitation will be from 9:00 a.m. until service time at the funeral home. Inurnment will be at a later date in Old Mission Cemetery in Wichita. 

Memorials are suggested to the Cancer Council of Ellis County or to Hospice of HaysMed.

Malachi Patrick Miller, 12, of Gorham, Kansas entered eternity Monday, May 1, 2023 at his home after battling a year-long illness.

Malachi was born August 23, 2010 at his home, in a hurry to enter this world, as he arrived just minutes after the midwife rolled in. Malachi got to work immediately with his unique personality, sense of humor, and quick wit. He loved putting a smile on anyone’s face. Malachi was the fourth of six children who were affectionately known as the “Miller 6-pack.”

After losing his father to a similar illness at the age of 6, Malachi often spoke of looking forward to the day he was able to play with his daddy in heaven.

While Malachi was only on this earth for 12 years, he lived life to the fullest every single day. He began playing the violin at age 4, the piano at age 6, and was singing from the moment he was born until he no longer had the ability to use his voice in his final days.

Malachi’s favorite sport was baseball. He had such a love for America’s pastime, that he was back on the field only 11 days following surgery for a spinal cord tumor (despite the doctor telling him he could not do so). Surgery initially left him unable to walk, but that did not stop Malachi’s determination to get back on the field. 

Malachi also had a love for the arts, especially the local theater productions. He got his big break in “A Charlie Brown Christmas,” and went on to star in productions such as “The King and I,” “Rats! The Story of the Pied Piper” and one of his all-time favorites, Hays Community Theatre’s 2022 summer production of “The Wizard of Oz.”

Malachi was a member of the Big Creek 4-H Club in Gorham where he served as a Song Leader, Recreation Leader, Reporter, and Parliamentarian throughout his 4-H career. Some of his favorite projects included Poultry, Dog Care &amp; Training, Shooting Sports, and Foods &amp; Nutrition. Malachi especially enjoyed learning how to properly handle and shoot a gun. He was also proud of his Grand Champion duck, Nibbles, who he made sure all the doctors and nurses knew about during his hospital stays. Malachi sang vocal solos at 4-H Days each year, and advanced to Regional Club Days 4 times, often being told his voice was “golden.”

Malachi was an award-winning author, writing and illustrating four books for the PBS Kids Writers Contest. He enjoyed swimming, beginning lessons before he was 1 year old.

Malachi had a great love for animals and animals loved him in return. This past summer, he won Rooks County Grand Champion Overall Dog Agility, despite having lost function in his right arm. He also inherited his late father’s love of fishing.

In November, Malachi suffered a setback that left him paralyzed from the neck down along with a 7 week hospital stay at Children’s Hospital in Omaha. While there, he was given the opportunity to have his one true wish granted through the “Make A Wish” foundation. After serious thought, he asked for a shih tzu puppy and was granted this wish. He named his puppy, Agnes, and she arrived the day after Malachi got home from the hospital. He spent his final days snuggling with his faithful friend.

Malachi did not know a stranger. He had a gift for striking up a conversation with people of all ages. He made so many friends with nurses, doctors, rehab teams, and respiratory therapists while he was continuing his fight. So much so, many continued to keep in touch after Malachi returned home.

Malachi was a member of St. Philomena’s Chapel of Gorham where he was baptized, received his First Holy Communion, and was confirmed. He was an altar server. Learning his Latin responses was an important goal that he had been working towards this past year. He was never afraid to tell others about his Traditional Catholic faith. He lived through so many sufferings this past year, but was cheerful and could often be heard praying out loud from the confines of his hospital bed. He accepted his cross willingly, all for the love of Almighty God.

Malachi is survived by his mother, Jenna of the home, his 5 siblings, Conner (17), Christian (16), Janessa (14), Matthias (9), and Jenson (8), all of the home; aunt, Mari Jo Stout, Plainville and Gorham,&nbsp;grandparents Will and Patti Stout, rural Natoma; aunts and uncles Diana and Derek Schutte, Halstead, Shane and Michelle Stout, Kansas City, and Ryan and Micah Becker, Russell; 13 cousins whom he loved dearly, and his special friend Kevin Eickhoff, Natoma.

He is preceded in death by his daddy, Dru Miller, grandparents Donnie and Duane Miller, uncle David Miller, and cousin Dyron Schutte.

A Solemn Requiem High Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, May 8, 2023 at the Gorham Senior Center. Burial will follow at the St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery in Gorham. Visitation will be held from 1:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., Sunday, May 7, 2023 at Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary in Russell. A vigil and rosary will be held at 7:00 p.m. Sunday at the mortuary.

 The family has requested in lieu of flowers a memorial fund has been established as the Malachi Miller Memorial Fund.

Mavis L. (Strecker) Kingsley - of Hays, Kansas passed away on Thursday, April 27, 2023 at her home. She was born at her parent's home at 425 East 14th, Street, Russell, Kansas.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Edward August Strecker and Alverda (Karst) Strecker-Mortimer; her husband, Dr. Keith Kingsley and her sister, Rae Ellen (Strecker) Smith-Pfeifer.

Mavis' father was killed in an oilfield accident in 1950, so she and her sister, Rae Ellen had to work to help support the family. Mavis, at ten years old was the popcorn girl at the Mecca Theater, later an usher at the Dream Theater. She worked at the swimming pool every summer during high school. All while growing up in Russell.

Mavis graduated from Russell High School in 1958. Thereafter she married Keith Kingsley. They were married for 50 years. From that union came two sons, Scott and Chris and one daughter, Sandy.

Mavis has worked all her life. While Keith was a County Agent in Lexington, Nebraska she worked for H.O. Smith Abstract Co.

During the nine years Keith was earning his college degrees including a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) from Kansas State University in Manhattan, Kansas, she had many jobs. She was secretary at KSU Photo Services, babysitter, sold Avon, secretary at County Treasurer, Riley County Courthouse, all while raising their children. She was a realtor for many years in Hays. Before retirement she was interior decorator which was her labor of passion. Her favorite thing was fishing, loved cooking and baking, reading and doing pencil drawings

Mavis is survived by her children, Dr. Scott Kingsley and wife, Lynda, of McKinney, TX; Chris Kingsley and wife, Michele, of Hays, KS; Sandy Kingsley of Laramie, WY; her grandchildren, Ashley Kingsley; Aaron Kingsley; Brandon Kingsley (Kaylee); Alyssa Cunningham (Chris); Tanner Perkins; Cody Perkins; Eathan Perkins; Alex Perkins; Crystal Cain of Raytown, MO her great-grandchildren, Cooper Betts; Callie Betts; Ava Cunningham; Braedon Cunningham, Hays, KS; Brenton Kingsley; Wenston Kingsley and Brynlee Kingsley.

Funeral services will be at 11:00 a.m. Friday, May 5, 2023, at The First Presbyterian Church, 2900 Hall Street, Hays, Kansas with Rev. Christine Wagner officiating. Burial will be in Mount Allen Cemetery, Hays, Kanas.

Visitation will be from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Thursday, at Cline’s-Keithley Mortuary of Hays and from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m. Friday, at the First Presbyterian Church.

Lori Rae Vasquez, age 38, passed away on Monday, May 1, 2023, at her home in Scott City, Kansas.&nbsp; She was born on September 28, 1984, in Scott City, Kansas, the daughter of Howard W. and Jan Fuller Green.&nbsp; 

A lifetime resident of Scott City, Kansas, she was the activity director at Park Lane Nursing Home in Scott City, Kansas.

She was a member of the Pence Community Church in Pence, Kansas, Teens For Christ, 4-H Leader, and a member of the Scott County Fair Board.

On August 26, 2006, she married Eric C. Vasquez in Scott City, Kansas.&nbsp; He survives.

Survivors include her husband Eric C. Vasquez of Scott City, Kansas, sons Baylor R. Vasquez of Scott City, Kansas, and Barrett O. Vasquez of Scott City, Kansas, parents Howard and Jan Green of Scott City, Kansas, sister Brandy and Tyson Stairs of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, brother Wyatt Green of Scott City, Kansas, father-in-law Willie Vasquez of Pampa, Texas, brothers-in-law&nbsp; T.J. and Shelbi Vasquez of Spearman, Texas, Marcus and Laurel Vasquez of Spearman, Texas, uncle Jeff Fuller of Wallace, Kansas, aunts Lee Ann Fellholter of Brewster, Kansas, Kris Green of Jacksonville, Florida, and many friends and extended family.

She was preceded in death by her grandparents Del Ray and Sharon Fuller, Hubert and Jeanette Green, mother-in-law Melissa Vasquez, uncle-in-law Regie Robertson, and grandparents-in-law Reg and Jody Robertson.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, May 5, 2023, at 2:00 p.m. at the First Baptist Church in Scott City, Kansas with Don Williams presiding.

ROZEL – Rodney Boese, 71, passed away May 1, 2023 at his residence in Rozel.

&nbsp;He was born October 9, 1951, in La Crosse, Kansas, the son of Vernon G. and Ella M. Eilts Boese.

A lifetime area resident, he was a stockman, loved hunting, fishing, trapping, skinning and going to livestock sales. 

He moved back home and worked at Sanford and Rozel Co-op, volunteered on Rozel Fire Department. He moved to Wyoming to work in the uranium mines. Later moved to Arizona to work in the copper mines. Moved back home and worked at Larned Correctional Mental Health Facility, La Crosse Livestock Market, Southwest Livestock in Dodge City and Ryan Farms of Burdett.

&nbsp;On August 27, 1977 he married Mary J. McVey at Larned. She survives.

Other survivors include son Curt Rocha, Rozel; two daughters, Lori (Robert) Larsen, Rozel, Amy Boese, Leon, Kansas; brother Lavern (Rosa) Boese, Great Bend; three sisters, Glenna Belcher, Kinsley, Sandra, (Dennis) Sauer, Rozel, Marva D. McDonald, Kinsley; six grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren and one great-grandchild on the way.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Robert Boese, and Brent Boese; sister Shirley Shank; and one great-grandchild.

Cremation has taken place; memorial service will be 11:00 a.m. Thursday, May 4, 2023 at Brown’s Grove Cemetery with Pastor Barry Bond presiding. Military graveside rights will be provided by the United States Navy.

Norma Jane Johnson (Shull) age 91, passed away on April 26, 2023, from complications after a massive stroke. Norma, the daughter of Charles Clarence Ernest Shull and Elizabeth Shull (Killian), was born September 11, 1931. She grew up on a farm outside WaKeeney, Kansas. Her family moved to Colby after the Cedar Bluffs Dam claimed their original homestead. 

She had three brothers, Judson, Earnest, and Vernon, and one sister, Rosalie.

In 1952, Norma married Edward William Johnson, of Downs. From this union four children were born: Linda, Dawn, Michael, and Patrick, who passed away in 2020. After the death of her husband, Norma worked as a bookkeeper in Osborne and in Colby.

Norma was the best mother a child could ask for, and a good friend to many during her long life. She was always willing to share what she had and to help others. She cooked meals, baked pies, and did lawn work for the elderly and less fortunate. She was a talented seamstress who sewed and mended all her children’s clothing when they were young. She loved figuring out how something worked, and could repair and restore just about anything, from the antique shortwave radios she loved, to sewing machines, record players, bicycles, and even her car.

She is survived by her siblings Rosalie Jacobs (John) of Colby, Vernon Shull (Beaujorn) of California; sister-in-law Judy Shull of Colby; children Linda Johnson of Benson, Arizona, Dawn Jones of Wichita, and Michael Johnson of Osborne; grandchildren Awyn, Dylan (Megan), Phillip (Ashley), and Justin; great- grandchildren Oliver, Kaylee, Dakota, Nolan, and Blaire, as well as many nieces, nephews, and friends.

Phyllis June McGillivray, 92, passed away May 1, 2023, at her home in Great Bend. She was born December 11, 1930, in Hopewell, Kan., to Ivan and Gertrude Lovell (Bradley) Keen.

&nbsp;Phyllis spent most of her childhood in Hutchinson, where she played basketball and was a homecoming queen candidate. 

She married Glenn Edward McGillivray in June of 1950. To this union there were born four children, Debby, Mike, Sue and Stewart.

&nbsp;A long time Great Bend resident, Phyllis was the postmaster in Ulysses for many years before coming to the Ellinwood Post Office, where she retired in 1989. 

She was baptized and a long-standing member of the Shelton Memorial Christian Church in Ulysses. 

She enjoyed music of all kinds, singing, dancing and bowling. She especially loved spending time with her family and being very onery with them.

&nbsp;Survivors include her children, Debby Lambert and husband Frank of Marietta, Okla., Mike McGillivray and his wife Carey of LaCrosse, Sue Levingston and her husband Robert and Stewart McGillivray, all of Great Bend; brother Kenny Keen and his wife Charlene of Kinsley; three sisters, Karen King of Oklahoma City, Okla., Kathy Wapelhorst of Wichita and Carla Harris of Shawnee, Okla.; sister-in-law Virginia Roberts of Hugoton; 13 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; three stepgrandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. 

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Glenn McGillivray; brother Ivan “Max” Keen; and two sisters, Jody Polly and Madge Pauls.

&nbsp;The Baxendale family was also a part of Phyllis’ life. The family wishes to the thank the doctors, nurses and staff of Golden Belt Home Health &amp; Hospice and Angel Care Home Health. They were amazing and provided amazing care and support.&nbsp;&nbsp;

&nbsp;There will be no visitation as cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held at 10:00 a.m., Saturday, May 20, 2023, at the First Church of the Nazarene in Great Bend, with Pastors Josh and Amy Foster. A private family inurnment will be held at Golden Cemetery in Ulysses at a later date.

Leona Slankard, 101, passed away April 30, 2023, at Larskfield Place Healthcare Center in Wichita. She was born December 14, 1921, in Rural Barton County near Susank, to George J. and Anna M. (Daubert) Maier. 

She married David Slankard May 10, 1941, in Great Bend. He died October 22, 1975.

A long time Great Bend resident, Leona was a self-employed housecleaner and she also did custodial work for Becker Homes. She also worked as a merchandiser at Walmart for several years. 

She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church and was active in the Ladies and Seniors Groups. Leona enjoyed cross stitching, doing crosswords and puzzles, taking long daily walks, but especially loved playing cards with her family and friends.

&nbsp;Survivors include her daughter, Carol Nix of Wichita; granddaughter Melissa Nix of Wichita; stepgranddaughter Rebekah Unruh and Delmar of Galva; two stepgreat-grandchildren LaTisha Brown and Tyler Unruh; two stepgreat-great-grandchildren; sister Eleanora Postlethwaite; and many nieces and nephews. 

She was preceded in death by her husband David; an infant son, Thomas Slankard; two infant daughters, Georgia Slankard and Phyllis Jean Slankard; four brothers, David Maier, Solomon “Sam” Maier, Emil Maier and Edward Maier; four sisters, Hilda Jones, Alma Stewart, Martha Bender and Edna Nuss; and son-in-law Michael Nix.

Owen Lester Hardon was born December 15, 1927, on a farm southwest of Atwood, Kansas. His parents were Albert E. and Rosa (Bliss) Hardon. He passed into eternity on April 26, 2023, at the Good Samaritan Center in Atwood. 

He lived his life on the farm where he was born until health problems caused him to move to the Good Samaritan Center for his final days. 

He attended rural school, Hillside School District No. 94, and Atwood Community High School and graduated with the class of 1946. He received a State Farmers Degree in FFA and was a member of the National Honor Society. In 1946, Owen became a member of the First Christian Church and was baptized by Rev. L. D. Oliphant. He served on many committees including the New Parsonage Building Committee and Educational Building Committee. He was a church elder for 26 years.

He joined the Masonic Lodge in 1949 and was a member of the Masonic Foundation for Cancer Research. Owen was a member of the Atwood Equity Cooperative Exchange Board of Directors and functioned as Secretary of the Board for 38 years. On March 21, 1950, he married Dorothy McLemore at the South Main Church of Christ in Roswell, New Mexico. To this union were born two sons, Gary and Glen.

Owen, Dorothy and sons lived on the home farm and farmed with his parents, brother Albert Lee, and uncle Frank “Lester” Hardon. They had dairy cattle, raised Hereford cattle, fed cattle in a feed lot and had many other animals. They grew crops of wheat, milo and alfalfa, and raised much feed for the livestock. Owen was preceded in death by his parents; his uncle Lester; his brother Albert and sister-in-law Joaquina; and by his wife, Dorothy, who passed on August 27, 2013.

He is survived by his sons, Gary and wife Susan of Wichita, Kansas, and Glen and wife Peggy of McCook Lake, South Dakota; a special friend and helper Sherrie (Nelson) Trail of Atwood; six grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; a nephew; two nieces, and a host of relatives and friends. Funeral services will be held at the First Christian Church on May 6,2023, at 10:00 a.m. with interment at the Atwood Fairview Cemetery, Atwood, Kansas. Rev. David Todd officiating. Pallbearers: Kenny Bohme, Mike Braxmeier, Sam Crouse, Dan Fields, Paul Nelson, and Tom Trail. Honorary pallbearers: Don Holiman and Tim Rippe.

Joan Gallion, 92, of Grinnell, died Saturday, April 29, 2023. She was born August 3, 1930, in Quinter, KS, to Charles and Leona (Boston) Johnson. 

She married Wilfred Gallion on November 26, 1953, at her parent’s home in Gove, KS. 

Joan graduated from Fort Hays State University in 1953 and taught school for a few years. She also worked as a school secretary for many years. Joan was preceded in death by her parents; husband Wilfred and brothers Dean and Dale Johnson. She is survived by her sons Mike Gallion and Stan Gallion; daughters Janet Gallion and Kathy (Roger) Marston; granddaughter Stephanie (Kelby) Bodley; great-grandson Evan Bodley; and sister-in-law Leona Gallion. Curtis Dean Deutscher, age 69, passed away Saturday, April 29, 2023, at his home in Ellis, Kansas. Curtis was born March 16, 1954, in Hays, Kansas, the son of Carl H. and Amy E. (Moore) Deutscher.

Curtis attended school in Ellis, graduating in 1973. While in high school he worked one summer for his brother, Gary, at his Texaco station. Following graduation, he worked in construction. Curtis worked at Travenol for 15 years for Walmart. He retired August 31, 2022, working 30 years for EnerSys.

Curtis loved fishing, singing Elvis’s songs, and his dog, Rascal. He was an avid reader and enjoyed putting puzzles together. He was a member of Christ Lutheran Church in Ellis.

Curtis was preceded in death by his father, Carl on Nov. 5, 1984, his mother, Amy on December 18, 1985, and brother-in-law, George E. Stewart on December 12, 1986. Surviving are his brother Gary E. Charles Edward Disque, 98, died April 28, 2023, at River Bend Senior Living, Great Bend. He was born June 21, 1924, in Claflin, to Adam and Margaret (Radenberg) Disque.

Charles attended country school district #75 and then graduated from Claflin High School in 1943.&nbsp;&nbsp;

He served during WWII in the U.S. Army Ordinance Alaska Defense.&nbsp;&nbsp;He was a farmer and a carpenter, farming and doing construction work in Ellsworth and Barton Counties.&nbsp;

Charles was a member of Claflin United Methodist Church where he had served on the pastor-parish relations committee and was a church historian and delegate. He was also active in the Claflin Methodist Men's Club, the Masonic Lodge #331, the Claflin Housing Board and the Barton County Historical Society, and was a former Cub Scout Leader and secretary for the Claflin Co-op board.

On September 30, 1951, he married Verna Leona Ehly in Claflin. After 68 blessed years together, she died on July 29, 2019.

He is survived by two daughters, Janet Sellens and husband David of Olathe, and Corrine Clark and husband Jim of Hays; two grandchildren, Jaclyn and Derek; and great-granddaughter, Kiran; three brothers, Herman Disque of Stafford, Harvey Disque of Salina, and Walter Disque and wife Joyce of Claflin.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, four brothers, Martin, Clarence, Marlin, and Edgar Disque, and six sisters, Edna, Grace, and Velma Disque, Mabel Flickinger, Aline Howser, and Leona Welch.

Visitation will be 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday and 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday with family to greet friends from 6 to 8 p.m., at the funeral home.

Funeral service will be 10:30 a.m., Thursday, May 4th, 2023, at Claflin United Methodist Church, with Pastor Diana Webster presiding. Burial will follow in Claflin Cemetery.

He enjoyed participating in Special Olympics, attending county fairs, and craft fairs, camping, and dancing.&nbsp;&nbsp;He especially loved his rocking chair.

Survivors include&nbsp; three brothers, Melvin G. Jacobs, Great Bend, Kansas, Paul A. Jacobs (Lori), Great Bend, Kansas, and Patrick L. Dale Eugene Appl, age 90, passed away on April 29, 2023, at his home in Leoti, Kansas. He was born on May 3, 1932, to Martinus and Violet (Elder) Appl in Leoti, Kansas. 

He was a farmer and rancher as well as a past member of the Leoti Lions Club and the Antique Car Club. He loved farming as much as he loved flying and showing everyone his farm from the air. Anyone who knew him knew that he was both candid and ornery.&nbsp;

On March 30, 1952, Dale Married Dorothea J. (Van Winkle) Appl in Dodge City. She survives.&nbsp;

Dale is survived by his wife, three daughters, Julie Carpenter of Leoti, Kansas, Trish Brunswig of WaKeeney, Kansas, Kathy Graff of Neodesha, Kansas, seven grandchildren Cole and Bridgette Carpenter, Shala and Kevan Steele, Tyler and Cheyann McClayland, Lacey and Alex Detwiler, Cara and Josh Gunderson, Ty and Courtney Brunswig, Tia and Logan Mattheyer, and 15 great-grandchildren.

He is preceded in death by his parents, sister Katheryn Taylor,&nbsp; brother Keith Appl, and son-in-law Charlie Carpenter.&nbsp;

Funeral services will be on Thursday, May 4, 2023, at 10:30 a.m. at the First Presbyterian Church in Leoti, Kansas with Mike Deschner presiding. &nbsp;Burial will follow at the Leoti Cemetery.

Visitation will be on May 2, 2023, from 12:00 until 8:00 p.m. and May 3, 2023, from 10:00 a.m. until 8:00 p.m. at the Price and Sons Funeral home at 4th and J St. in Leoti, Kansas.

&nbsp; Patricia Grimes (Pat), 92, passed away Saturday, April 29, 2023, at Smith County Memorial Hospital, Smith Center, KS. Pat was born October 31st, 1930, in Kansas City, Missouri to Lucy (Mitchell) Todd and Charles E. Todd.&nbsp; Her family lived in a two-story duplex on Spruce Street.&nbsp; She was born at home. She had a four-year-old sister, Peggy Jane, anxiously waiting her arrival. She began kindergarten at the age of four at the Ashland school.&nbsp; With not having 8th grade, she graduated from high school at the age of 16.&nbsp; She graduated in 1947 and was voted, “The Most Bashful” by her classmates.&nbsp;

Her mom was a homemaker and her dad was a streetcar driver and later a city bus driver on the streets of Kansas City.&nbsp; She remembers getting a dime each week and either going to the movies or enjoying a chocolate malt.&nbsp; &nbsp;

She enrolled in Baker University and earned a bachelor of arts degree in children’s literature.&nbsp; After graduating, she taught for six years in the Kansas City area teaching elementary kids. She spent a year in Germany during this time through the Army’s special services. She and other gals her age would plan and participate in activities for the soldiers stationed there.&nbsp; This trip gave her a wealth of information and experiences that she would treasure throughout her life! In 1957, she met a senior year dental student on the park bench near the apartment building on the Plaza where they both lived with friends.&nbsp; They were married October 21st, 1958 in Lawton, Oklahoma. Looking for a dental practice brought them to Smith Center, their home together for almost 65 years.&nbsp; Bill practiced dentistry for over 50 years, with Pat serving as the secretary many of those years. Pat was a 53-year member of the PEO sisterhood and also enjoyed playing bridge through the years with couples and was also a member of the Entre Nous Club.&nbsp; These ladies began the Old Settler’s Day’s event known as, “The Prairie Dog Saloon.”&nbsp; It provided entertainment for the community that day with singing and skits while raising money for worthwhile causes. She and “Papa Bill” were big supporters of all their kids and later grandkids’ activities.&nbsp; From sports events to dance recitals, they were there!&nbsp; Pat was proceeded in death by her parents Charlie and Lucy Todd, her sister Peggy Short, husband Bill Grimes and grandson Chet William Kuhlmann. Those left to remember and cherish all their many memories are her children Gary Grimes, Smith Center, Annalee Ratliff (Alvie), Athol and Meribeth Lambert (Clark) of Smith Center. Four grandchildren:&nbsp; Zach Lambert of Olathe, Kansas, Sammy Gleason, (Tanner) of Riley, Kansas, Ethan Kuhlmann, (Jill) of Osborne, Kansas and Grant Lambert of Nashville, Tennessee. Seven great-granddaughters have all enjoyed time with “Granny Pat.” They are Cruz Lambert, Tessa, Layla, Luxa and Livi Gleason, and Baylin and Emmie Kuhlmann. A Celebration of Pat’s life will be held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, May 6, 2023, at Smith Center United Methodist Church, 301 E. Kansas Ave., Smith Center, KS.&nbsp; There will not be a public visitation as cremation was chosen.&nbsp; Inurnment will take place in Fairview Cemetery, Smith Center, KS.&nbsp;

Likes to sell knowledge but hard to find a buyer”. Gary O. Battles, 82, peacefully passed away in his home “up on the hill” in Aurora, CO on Tuesday, April 25, 2023. Gary was born on February 10, 1941, in Maquoketa, IA the son of Lynn Frederick and Helen (Gisel) Battles. He attended and graduated from Elwood Consolidated School in 1959 and graduated from Wisconsin State University-Platteville in 1963. His love of farming and cattle started on the family farm that has been in operation since 1848. He started his first cow herd at an early age and began his own feeding operation at 15 years old. Gary was a master showman and his eye for spotting exceptional cattle was evident. He showed grand champions at the Jackson County Fair a total of four times and his prized steer “Toby” won many other regional competitions including winning the Quad County championship where it was rated as one of the best in the history of the show. In college, he boastfully challenged a lone girl in class to sit up front with the boys. That girl who never shied away from his boastful chatter picked up her books and sat right next to him. She later became his wife of 57 years. Gary married Joyce (Cushman) Battles on June 13, 1965. Gary in his true romantic ways convinced his young bride on their honeymoon to travel west, where he surprisingly took her to a feedlot operation that he wanted to see on the drive. Together they followed his cattlemen dreams first to Ottumwa, IA and then to Garden City, KS where he served as a fat cattle buyer. In 1969, he was hired as the general manager for Fairleigh Feed Yards in Scott City, KS and remained there through 1989. He did independent feed yard consulting for a couple of years while also buying fat cattle for Hy Plains Packing Company of Dodge City, KS. In 1992, he worked his last decade at Ranger Feeders in Dighton, KS and retired to Aurora, CO to be closer to family in 2003. Gary loved western Kansas and the vast “wall to wall blue sky”. He commented that “the wind is the sign of change” and as he drove up to the feedlot, he would remark that’s the “smell of money.” Gary, who never played football before, joined the UW-Platteville Pioneer football team and earned his nickname “Hardrock” for his hard-nosed play. His first sporting love was baseball, where he played and lettered all four years at UW-Platteville. His baseball playing style mirrored the way he operated in life: hard-nosed, fast, meticulous in detail and playing the right way. Gary coached his kids in softball and baseball the exact same way. He served in the United States Marine Corps and the Marine Reserve Corps from 1964 to 1974. He was a proud member of the Kansas Livestock association and the National Cattlemen's Beef Association. In 2020, he was honored by the Kansas Livestock Association as a member of the 50-Year Club. In retirement, he started his second career as a very involved “Old Grandad” Gary. He loved following and hearing about his grandkids' pursuits. Superfan Gary became known for his unique ability to insert himself in any activity especially while watching or hearing about his grandkids sporting events. While his disease took his ability away to walk, it never took his voice nor his sharp wit. He was a master at finding a way to connect and communicate with people. He enjoyed talking to family and friends on his “idiot machines” (known to us as a computer and cell phone). His trademark was handing out $2 bills, “if you never spend it, then you will never go broke.” Gary created his own business card which he proudly shared. If you met Gary even just once, you would never forget him. Gary is survived by his wife, Joyce; two daughters, Calista (Lynn) Wright of Aurora, CO and their son Challis (Haley) and son Maverick and daughter Channing (Tyrell) Hansen with great-grandson arriving early fall; Candice Battles of Aurora, CO and her son Cyler and daughter Candra; two sons, Cort Battles of Lone Tree, CO and his sons Cian and Finn and Cale (Tess) Battles of Verona, WI and their three sons Graeden, Griffin and Granton. He is also survived by his Cushman family of in-laws which includes four brothers and six sisters. He was preceded in death by Faun Cushman (father-in-law), Phyllis Cushman (mother-in-law) and two brothers-in-law. He was also preceded in death by his father (Lynn), mother (Helen), brother (Lynn Frederick). Several additional special people came into his life as his disease progressed. Our family is indebted to Doctor Stephanie Kraft, who was an exceptional doctor that showed great patience and care for Gary. Connie, Jose, Susan, Shelly and Lisa were not only Gary's caregivers, but people who dad loved to see every day. So many people were willing to help Gary and cared about him. A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, May 27th from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. in Aurora, CO at the Heritage Eagle Bend Clubhouse (23155 East Heritage Parkway). An additional celebration will take place in Platteville, WI later this summer. A private interment will be held at Hillside Cemetery in Platteville. Gary was very specific that he did not want any flowers at his celebration of life. “Trees, plants and flowers are all weeds.” In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to Kennedy’s Disease Association in care of Garnand Funeral Home.
