Almena resident Lyle Wayne Engelhardt passed away Saturday, September 9, 2023 at his home surrounded by his loved ones. &nbsp;He was 79 years old.

He was born at the Norton County Hospital in Norton, Kansas on November 13, 1943 the son of William Augustus and Mabell Minerva (Barrett Engelhardt. &nbsp;

He attended Norton Community Schools and graduated from Norton Community High School with the class of 1962. &nbsp;

After graduation, Lyle worked at the Kansas Highway Transportation Department from 1962 through 1963, then at the state hospital in Norton from 1963 through 1966 in the supply department. &nbsp;From 1966 through 1967, he owned and operated Skelly Auto Electric. &nbsp;From 1967 through 1974 he was self employed with Kirby Company Norton. In 1974 through 1983 he was he owner and operator of his own vacuum cleaner store featuring sales and service of vacuums and also a truck mounted carpet cleaning service.

He was united in marriage to Krista G. Kellogg in May of 1966 and to this union a daughter was born, Samantha. &nbsp;The couple later divorced. &nbsp;Lyle than met and married Nancy R. Millspaugh &nbsp;Dishong on June 15, 1985 in Norton, Kansas. &nbsp;With this marriage he gained two daughters, Heather and Melanie.

In 1986 he and Nancy relocated to Colorado and he became the proprietor of Lyle's General Repair. &nbsp;In that capacity he became the caretaker of rental units for three or four realtors. &nbsp;Lyle loved his customers and enjoyed his business.

One of the things that brought joy to his heart was taking the grandchildren camping and boating. &nbsp;He would teach them many &nbsp;things on these trips. &nbsp;

In 2015 he retired and moved back to Almena, Kansas where he enjoyed retirement life. &nbsp;He and Nancy were members of the Norton Christian Church. &nbsp;He enjoyed being at the church, many of the members were former classmates.

Those that preceded him in death were his parents, sister Helen Bryant and brother-in-law Lowell Bryant, a brother Howard Engelhardt and sister-in-law Philomena, sister Fleta Hanlon and brother-in-law Wayne Hanlon, a granddaughter Melena Richardson and a great-granddaughter Melayne LeGrande.

He was a loving and devoted partner to his wife, Nancy. &nbsp;He was a proud father to his daughters, Samantha C. Engelhardt of Almena, Heather R. Richardson and husband Billy of Colorado Springs, Colorado and Melanie D. Abeyta and husband Joe of Santa Monica, California. &nbsp;He also found great joy in being a grandfather to 15 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. &nbsp;He was a cherished brother of Virginia McMillin, Delia, Kansas. &nbsp;His family was his pride and joy, and he will be deeply missed.

Cremation was planned. &nbsp;A memorial service will be held at a later date.

Lyle W. Engelhardt

Edwin Vaden Bunch, of Stockton, Kansas, passed away on September 15, 2023, at his home in Stockton. He was born on February 15, 1955, in Lynchburg, Virginia to George T. and Helen (Kelly) Bunch. 

He married Susan Wyant on May 29, 1979, in Richmond, Kentucky.

Edwin grew up in Virginia and graduated from Hayfield High School in Fairfax County in 1973. He joined the U.S. Airforce and was an automatic tracking radar repairman. He then worked for Vega Precision Laboratories as a test technician and then D.C. Metro Rail as a track engineer until retirement.

Edwin loved history, electronics, and working on his 1955 Morgan. He was a lifetime member of the American Legion and Presbyterian Church.

Edwin is survived by his wife, Susan Bunch of the home in Stockton; children, George W. Bunch of Stockton and Terry (Sally Addison) Stroup, Jr. of Stockton; brother, Gary Bunch of Port Haywood, VA; brother-in-law, William “Butch” Wyant, Jr. of Stockton; four grandchildren, Jessica (Brandon) Ochoa, Catheryn (Brendon) Naggy, Bradley Stroup, and Justyn (Tori) Stroup, all of Jacksonville, NC; and two great-grandchildren, Gabriel and Aiden.

He is preceded in death by his parents, George and Helen Bunch; brother, Thomas Bunch; and sister, Sylvia Bunch.

A graveside service will be held on Wednesday, September 20, 2023, at 2 p.m.at the Stockton City Cemetery with visitation at 1 p.m. until service time on Wednesday.

Edwin Vaden Bunch

Arthur F. “Art” Schneweis, 85, died September 15, 2023, at HaysMed, Hays, Kansas. &nbsp;He was born June 25, 1938, in Claflin, Kansas, the son of August and Martha (Penka) Schneweis. &nbsp;

Art graduated from Odin High School.&nbsp;

On November 19, 1971, he married Betty L. (Dooling)Walker in St. John, Kansas. 

Together Art and Betty worked side by side as self-employed telephone contractors. She preceded him in death on October 2, 2020.

Art was the epitome of a patriot. He served proudly with the United States Army Reserves that was called to active duty twice during the Korean War. &nbsp;His patriotism didn’t end upon discharge, Art continued to lead in his local V.F.W. serving as commander and participating in many veteran’s services. 

He was also an avid outdoorsman and hunter. He had a love for animals, especially his hunting dogs. He enjoyed sharpening knives and visiting with his friends at the Odin Store.

He is survived by a son, Bruce Walker; two daughters, Pat Anderson and husband Andy, and Lynnda Walker; and three great-grandchildren, Nathan, Heaven, and Brent.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, Betty, one brother and four sisters, and a granddaughter, Krystle Leigh.

Friends may sign the book 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday with family to greet friends from 6-8 p.m., at the funeral home. There will be no viewing as per Art’s wishes, cremation has taken place.

Memorials service will be 10:00 a.m., Wednesday, September 20th, 2023, at the Church of Christ, Great Bend, Kansas, with Minister John Turner presiding. Inurnment with military honors will follow at Larned Cemetery, Larned, Kansas.

Arthur 'Art' Schneweis

 Norman J. Leiker passed away peacefully at his home in Lubbock, TX on September 4, 2023. He was born in Hays to Edward S. and Philippa (Pfannenstiel) Leiker on March 17, 1939.

 After graduating from Hays High School, Norman joined the U.S. Air Force and served for 20 years before retiring from the military in 1978. His tours of duty included Okinawa, Japan, Germany, Wisconsin, Canada, Florida, Johnson Island in the Pacific, Hawaii, and Lubbock, TX which is where he retired. 

Following his military retirement, Norman worked security for Texas Instruments and as a medical carrier in Lubbock.

Norman married Anneliese Hofmann on June 16, 1962 in Oberfranken, Germany. 

He is survived by his wife, his son Martin, three grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren, all living in Texas, his brothers Glenn and Terry of Hays, and his sister Doris Wing (Dave). 

He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers Eldon and Tom, and a great-granddaughter.

Cremation has taken place. A memorial will be held at a later date.&nbsp;&nbsp;

<h2>Norman J. Leiker, Lubbock, Texas</h2>March 17, 1939 - September 4, 2023 Norman J. Leiker passed away peacefully at his home in Lubbock, TX on September 4, 2023. Shane Douglas Bowie, rural Sheridan County

Shane Bowie, 36 years 11 months and 7 days, passed away at his home in rural Sheridan County, on September 14, 2023. He was born in Oberlin, Kansas to Keith and Debra (Cressler) Bowie, on October 6, 1986.

Shane was a farmer. He worked with and helped his father. He worked with cattle, was a mechanic and had a very inventive mind. He liked to say he was an all-around farm worker. 

In his spare time, he liked to hunt, collect unusual rocks, and play farm games on the computer. Shane was a member of the Hoxie Baptist Temple.

Shane is survived by his parents, Keith, and Deb Bowie of Rural Sheridan County; brother, Philip M. Bowie of Rural Sheridan County; aunts, Patricia Hansen (Lyle) of Bartley, Nebraska, Linda Bowie of Crowley, Texas, Betty Cressler of Jennings, Kansas, and Louise Cressler of Jennings, Kansas; uncles, Gary Bowie of Austin, Texas, and Dennis Bowie of Lawrence, Kansas; and lots of cousins.

He preceded in death by his grandparents and a cousin, Chris Bowie.

A funeral service is planned for Friday, September 22, 2023, 10:30 a.m., at the Mickey-Leopold Funeral Home, Hoxie, Kansas. Visitation will be prior to the service from 9:00 a.m. -10:30 a.m. Following the service, interment will take place in the Hoxie City Cemetery.

Shane Douglas Bowie

Beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, Arlene Marie Newell (86) passed away at her home in Gilbert, Arizona on September 10, 2023. Arlene was born on January 18, 1937 to Leo and Mary Desmarteau in Damar, Kansas. 

She met Robert Henry Newell in Damar, Kansas. The couple was married in June of 1954 and remained in love until death. They began their life in Hill City, Kansas. 

Arlene spent some of her best years loving students and staff at the Hill City Grade School library. Arlene retired from Hill City Grade School and moved with Robert to Arizona to enjoy retirement. Arlene loved to quilt, go dancing, but most of all, loved cooking for large crowds of family and friends. 

Arlene was preceded in death by her husband Robert Henry Newell and is survived by her six children Stan (Lori) Newell-Monticello IL, Cindy (Lance) Wise-Gilbert AZ, Joyce (Randy) Maley-Queen Creek AZ, Myra (John) Doxon-Gilbert AZ, Galen (Lori) Newell-Wichita KS, and Brenda (Tyler) Kobler-Wichita KS; grandchildren Kiley Owen, Casey Newell, Kelly Smith, Lindsey Dunton, Sally Chase, Ashley Holt, Adam Doxon, Kayla Nelson, Chris Newell, Nicole Mannion, Carlie Honas, Trey Kobler, and Brody Kobler; and 29 great-grandchildren. 

Services at Mountain View Funeral Home were held on Wednesday, September 13 in Gilbert, AZ and a Catholic Mass to be held in Damar, KS at St. Joseph Catholic Church at 11 a.m. on Saturday, October 7, 2023.

<h2>Arlene Marie Newell</h2>January 18, 1937 - September 10, 2023Beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, Arlene Marie Newell (86) passed away at her home in Gilbert, Arizona on September 10, 2023. Arlene was born on January 18, 1937 to Leo and Mary Desmarteau in Damar, Kansas. She met Robert Henry Newell in Damar, Kansas. The couple was married in June of 1954 and remained in love until death. They began their life in Hill City, Kansas. Arlene spent some of her best years loving students and staff at the Hill City Grade School library. Arlene retired from Hill City Grade School and moved with Robert to Arizona to enjoy retirement. Arlene loved to quilt, go dancing, but most of all, loved cooking for large crowds of family and friends. Arlene was preceded in death by her husband Robert Henry Newell and is survived by her six children Stan (Lori) Newell-Monticello IL, Cindy (Lance) Wise-Gilbert AZ, Joyce (Randy) Maley-Queen Creek AZ, Myra (John) Doxon-Gilbert AZ, Galen (Lori) Newell-Wichita KS, and Brenda (Tyler) Kobler-Wichita KS; grandchildren Kiley Owen, Casey Newell, Kelly Smith, Lindsey Dunton, Sally Chase, Ashley Holt, Adam Doxon, Kayla Nelson, Chris Newell, Nicole Mannion, Carlie Honas, Trey Kobler, and Brody Kobler; and 29 great-grandchildren. Arlene Marie Newell

Carey Scott Jordan, age 31, of Schoenchen, Kansas, passed away on Tuesday, September 12, 2023, at Hays Medical Center. He was born on April 14, 1992, in Wichita, Kansas, to his parents, Scott Allen Jordan and Lynette Rumpel. 

Carey's journey was filled with a passion for mechanics, a warm heart, and an unquenchable curiosity for life.

Carey graduated from Hays High School in 2010, a pivotal milestone in his life. 

He was known to be a dedicated individual who put his heart into everything he did. Professionally, he was the manager and cook at Pheasant Run in Hays, but his true love was working with engines. Carey was a natural mechanic, finding joy in tinkering with engines and solving mechanical puzzles, and sometimes creating a few also.&nbsp;Throughout his career, he lent his expertise to Rein's Repair, Greg's Alignment, and Hays Chevy. He also served as the assistant manager at Quality Quick Lube before becoming the manager of Pioneer Quick Lube.

Beyond his work, Carey had a diverse range of interests. He had a true passion for cooking. Family and friends were his pillars of strength, and he cherished spending time with them. He was an avid hunter and fisherman, displaying his love for the outdoors. As a gunsmith, Carey's expertise extended into many areas, reflecting his ceaseless desire to learn and grow.

Carey's vibrant personality was a constant source of joy for those around him. He was quick-witted, often playful, and had a big smile and an infectious laugh. His outgoing nature led him to continually seek out new experiences and adventures. Despite his robust exterior. Carey possessed a tender heart and was known to shed a tear when faced with the loss of an animal's life.

Carey is survived by his mother and stepfather, Lynette Rumpel and Lonnie Werth of Hays, Kansas; a sister, Chantee Jordan (Grant Holland) of San Marcos, Texas; grandmothers, Evea Rumpel of WaKeeney, Kansas, and Sue Jordan of Hays, Kansas; uncles, Aaron Rumpel of WaKeeney, Kansas, Randy Jordan (Myrna) of Hays, Kansas and Larry Werth (Michele) of Brewster, Kansas; aunt, Reesa Gerhard of Hays, Kansas; niece, Samantha Rude; nephew, Jordan Holland; cousins, Christopher Jordan (Emily) of Manhattan, Kansas, Matthew Jordan of St. George, Kansas, Nikki Wiggins (Ryan) of Russell, Kansas, Gardner Jordan (Alexes) of San Tan Valley, Arizona, Bailey Jordan of Brighton, Colorado, and Kourtney Talkington (Skyler) of Ellis, Kansas, as well as the fiancé of his late father Scott, Becky Meserve of Hays, Kansas.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, September 20, at the Hays First United Methodist Church, located at 305 W. 7th.&nbsp;

Alvin Emil Muth, 90, passed away September 15, 2023, at Medicalodges, Great Bend, Kan. He was born September 8, 1933, in Hoisington, Kan., to Hubert and Amelia “Molly” (Boxberger) Muth. 

Alvin married Vera Korte on August 8, 1954, in Kinsley, Kan. She passed on July 24, 2023.

A lifetime Barton County resident, Alvin worked as a machinist for Great Bend Industries. He was a member of St. Mark Lutheran Church in Great Bend and Sunflower Polka Club. Alvin enjoyed polka dancing and taking great care of his Cadillacs.&nbsp;

Survivors include a daughter, Denise Appel and husband Rich of Rush Center, Kan.; a son, Darren Muth and wife Ruth of Longmont, Colo.; nine grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and a sister, Marilyn Rice of Greenwood, Ark. &nbsp;

He was preceded in death by his wife; his parents; a daughter, Dianna Lynn Muth; and a sister, Arlene Wilhelm.&nbsp;

Visitation will be held from noon to 8:00 p.m., Tuesday, September 19, 2023, at Bryant Funeral Home, with the family receiving guests from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m., Wednesday, September 20, 2023, at Bryant Funeral Home, with Pastor Adam Wutka presiding. Teri Jean Hart, age 64, of Hays, Kansas went to be with our Lord after passing away peacefully at home on September 15, 2023. 

She was a devoted wife, loving mother, loyal daughter, affectionate caregiver and faithful friend.

Teri was born to Otto R. Jr and Rachel J. (Woods) Rohla in Concordia, Kansas on June 21, 1959. Along with her parents, she and her older sister Jody Robertson and younger brother Otto ‘Ross’ Rohla III moved to Colby, KS in 1966 where she spent most of her youth. 

After graduating from Colby High School, Teri obtained her LPN license at Colby Community College in 1979 and it is there she first discovered her passion for nursing those in need with her exceptional caregiving abilities. She especially loved helping her elders. Teri had found her calling.

Fresh out of college Teri began her long and successful nursing profession at St. Anthony Hospital in Hays, Kansas 44 years ago, and a year later she fell in love with her husband Ronald James Hart. They happily married on June 8, 1984. Teri and Ron were blessed to become parents to Jesse Alexander Hart and Rayna Michelle Hart. Teri was a wonderful wife and mother. 

Throughout this period in her life she took nursing classes at Fort Hays State University to improve upon her skills.

Precisely ten years after starting her professional career, Teri completed the nursing program at Fort Hays State University, passed state boards and added BSN, RN to her credentials. Teri had reaffirmed her calling.

Throughout her cherished RN career Teri was recognized with numerous awards such as the Daisy Team Award and became a national Cherokee Inspired Comfort Award nominee. She belonged to the FHSU Honor Society’s Nu Zeta Chapter, Sigma Theta Tau International. Her years of devotion to nursing culminated with her being bestowed the Sister Mary J. Mollison, RN ‘Nurse of the Year Award’ at HaysMed in 2020.

Beyond those within her own home, Teri was blessed and loved by a large family whom also thought the world of her. Along with her many aunts, uncles and cousins she kept in touch with, Teri was adored by all her four parents, six siblings, 14 nieces and nephews plus 26 great-nieces and nephews as well as all their spouses. 

Teri was a friendly and sincere person and her extended family witnessed her kindness firsthand and she knew they loved her back. Teri influenced a lot of her young relatives to eventually seek their own various medical professions.

Teri will also be remembered as a great friend to many. Teri was an affectionate person and a natural for making friends. Many of her dearest friends were those in various medical fields, those she had given care for, and some of her closest friends have even known her since grade school. Whether at HaysMed, Daylight Donuts, church, ball games, at home, or shopping, Teri always brought her special gift of kindness.

Teri had an adventurous side including traveling the U.S.; whether by motorcycle, plane, train, automobile, snowmobile, yacht, canoe, 18-wheelers or ferry. She always enjoyed bringing others along to share her joy and make new friends.

Teri is survived by her husband, Ronald J. Hart; her children, Jesse A. Hart and Rayna M. Hart; her mother, Rachel J. Rohla; her mother-in-law, Phyllis F. Hart; as well as many siblings, family and friends.

Teri was preceded in death by her father, Otto R. Rohla, Jr; her father-in-law, William F. Hart; and her great-nephew, Rylan A. Gier.

Funeral services will be at 10:00 a.m. Thursday, September 21, 2023, at the First United Methodist Church, 305 Ash Street, Hays, Kansas with Pastor Craig Hauschild and Rev. Cana Moore officiating. Burial will be in Fort Hays Memorial Gardens Cemetery, Hays, Kansas.

Visitation will be from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Wednesday, at Cline’s-Keithley Mortuary of Hays, and from 9:00 to 10:00 a.m. Thursday, at the First United Methodist Church.

Teri Jean Hart

SCOTT CITY&nbsp; — Deanna Kay Tucker, age 82, passed away on Thursday, September 14, 2023, at the Hays Medical Center in Hays, Kansas. She was born on June 3, 1941, in Scott City, Kansas the daughter of Roy David and Mildred Matheny Tucker. She has been in the community since the spring of 1994, having moved from Houston, Texas, she was a retired police dispatcher.

She was a member of Pence Community Church and of the Scott City Quilt Guild.

On August 12, 1959 she married Bill Sperry in Garden City, Kansas.&nbsp;

She was born on June 3, 1941, in Scott City, Kansas the daughter of Roy David and Mildred Matheny Tucker. Shane Michael McBride, 55, passed away Thursday, September 7, 2023 at his home in Scott City, Kansas.&nbsp;

Shane was born January 12, 1968 in Goodland, KS. He grew up on a farm outside of Indianola, NE. 

He served in the United States Army where he obtained his GED.

Shane married Shari Jones of McCook, NE November 19, 1988, mutually separating in 2016.&nbsp;

Shane worked as an oil field tester for Trilobite Testing for many years. His most recent employment was at Love’s Truck Stop in Scott City, KS were he enjoyed his coworkers and visiting with members of the community.&nbsp;

Shane was a hard worker his entire life, overcoming many obstacles. He enjoyed fishing, camping, riding motorcycles, listening to music and gardening. He was a man of many hobbies. Although he took great pride in both his daughters and was very proud of the life they built, his greatest joy was being Papa Shane to his grandbabies, lighting up anytime he talked about them, and always had a picture to show.&nbsp;

He is survived by two daughters, Santanna (Corey) Zeller of Colorado, and Shanea (Tyler) Kasperbauer of Iowa; four grandchildren, Mirabella and Landon Zeller, Maisyn and Collin Kasperbauer; estranged wife, Shari McBride of Colorado; brother Sean McBride of Nebraska; father Jim McBride of Nebraska; many nieces, nephews and friends that were like family to him.&nbsp;

He is proceeded in death by his in-laws Jennifer and Michael “Mic” Jones; stepmother, Ida Mcbride; brother, Shannon Warren McBride; a niece, Sarah-Jean McBride; and his beloved dogs Sophie and Apollo.&nbsp;

Donald Anthony Juenemann was born December 7, 1939, on the family farm south of Leoville, Kansas, to Frank and Amelia (Kleinsorge) Juenemann. He passed away Thursday, September 14, 2023 at the Sheridan County Health Complex in Hoxie, Kansas, at the age of 83.

Don and his siblings grew up on the family farm south of Leoville. He graduated from Leoville High School in 1958. He then served in the United States Army as a ham radio operator in Germany.

On February 17, 1968, Don was united in marriage to Helen Siruta in Colby, KS. They made their home on the family farm. To this union they were blessed with five children and 15 grandchildren.

Don was a hardworking and devoted farmer, husband, father and grandfather. In addition to farming, he spent many years doing a variety of skilled jobs. 

Don was a member of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus where he served as grand knight and district deputy, as well as a commander of Selden American Legion Post 321. He enjoyed working in his shop, playing pinochle, polka dancing, but most of all, building and admiring a nice, STRAIGHT line of fence. But over everything, he loved spending time with his grandchildren.

Don was preceded in death by his wife in 2015; his parents; two brothers, Richard and Paul; and grandson, Jake Anthony Geisinger

He is survived by his children Dawn (Hardy) Howard, of WaKeeney, and their children Larissa (Wyatt) Disque, Aleah and Jenna; Daryl (Matt) Havlas, of Quinter, and children Peyton (Zach) Gillespie, Conner, Preston and Cooper; Darren (Stacie) Juenemann, of Manhattan and children Dalton, Trenton and Jayda; Dana (Jason) Geisinger, of rural Hoxie and children Karlee and Nash; and Dustin (Tonya) Juenemann, of Norton, and children Nolan and Ella: siblings Ervin of Concord, CA; Joseph (Joyce) of Saratoga, WY; Frank (Stormy) of Corning, CA; Mary Ann (Mark) Schemm, of Topeka; and Janet Wahlmeier, of Colby; in addition to many other relatives and friends.

Mass of Christian Burial will be Monday, September 18 at 10 a.m. at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Leoville with Fr. Vincent Thu Lang, Fr. Matthew Chacko, and Fr. Charles Steier officiating. Burial will be in the Kansas Veterans Cemetery in WaKeeney at 2 p.m. Visitation is Sunday, September 17 from 4 – 7 p.m. with rosary following at the church in Leoville.

Norma Angeline Stricker, 91, passed away on September 15, 2023, at Azria Health Woodhaven, Great Bend, Kansas. She was born on November 22, 1931, to John and Rachel (Steinert) Karst, in Hoisington, Kansas. 

Norma married Glen Stricker on September 28, 1952, at Bender Hill Lutheran Church in Russell County, Kan. He passed on August 17, 2022.

A lifetime Barton County resident, Norma was a homemaker for many years. She later worked in the banking industry, in general banking for the Credit Bureau and as a teller at Security State Bank. Norma was a member of St. Mark Lutheran Church, serving in WELCA and as the Church Council treasurer. She had great interest in ancestry/genealogy, cooking, sewing, and was an avid reader. Norma was known for turning the end results of whatever Glen grew in his garden into canned items or baked into pies. She loved spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Survivors include a son, Anthony "Tony" Stricker of Great Bend; two daughters, Cynthia Axman of Broken Arrow, Oklahoma, and Michelle Lanham and husband Chuck of Fort Worth, Texas; three sisters, Dolores Deutsch of Hoisington, Kansas, Marjorie Kraft of Ness City, Kansas, and Rita Thompson of Kansas City, Missouri; three granddaughters, Alisha Hunley and husband Clifton, Baylee Lanham and Keely Lanham; two great grandchildren, Jarrett Hunley and KayLynne Hunley; and many nieces and nephews.&nbsp;

She was preceded in death by her husband, Glen; her parents; sister, Helen Schwien; and a grandson, Jared Axman.&nbsp;

Visitation will be held from noon to 8:00 p.m., Tuesday, September 19, 2023, at Bryant Funeral Home, with family to receive friends from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, September 20, 2023, at St. Mark Lutheran Church with Pastor Adam Wutka presiding. Clarence Richard “Dick” Meitler, 80, passed away September 14, 2023, at Wesley Medical Center, Wichita, Kansas. He was born on September 29, 1942, near Sylvan Grove, Kansas, to Clarence W. and Lois Bonnel (Zacho) Meitler. 

On December 13, 2008, he was united in marriage to Cynthia Tittel.&nbsp;

Dick grew up at Sylvan Grove, Kansas, and at age 14, he began working with his dad. They built watershed dams and helped with Lake Wilson. As he grew older, he turned to construction, working on many projects around western Kansas. He worked on the high rise, Walmart, Fuller Brush, and many other projects that happened in Great Bend. There was no heavy equipment that he wasn’t good at operating. He also worked for C.V. Cale.&nbsp;

In the mid 1970s, he began managing Concrete Service. He also started a crane rental business. He retired in his late 60s but continued the crane rental business for several more years. Never comfortable with retirement, he continued doing special projects for Concrete Service.

Dick was an avid duck hunter and spent many years hunting at Cheyenne Bottoms. He was also passionate about fishing and spent many days at Glen Elder, Wilson Lake, Milford, and Ten Killer in Oklahoma. He also enjoyed hog hunting trips to Texas with his brothers and friends.&nbsp;

Dick was a member of the First Christian Church.

Survivors include his spouse, Cynthia; two sons, D. Shane Meitler of Great Bend, Kansas and Trevor (Angie) Meitler of Hutchinson, Kansas; two stepdaughters, Stacy (Eric) Johnson and Shauna Young, all of Great Bend; 14 grandchildren; five stepgrandchildren; many great-grandchildren; four brothers, Chuck&nbsp;(Lorraine) Meitler of Lockhart, Texas, Donald (Randy) Meitler of Wichita, Kansas, Daryl (June) Meitler of Tonganoxie, Kansas, Danny (Geri) Meitler of Plainville, Kansas; seven sisters, Judy (Richard) Werner of Plainville, Kansas, Linda Glisson of Stockton, Kansas, Debra (Steve) Iwig of Tecumseh, Kansas, Dee Ann Meitler of Sylvan Grove, Kansas, Vicky Wiles, Kathy Ashbaugh, and Cindy (Dave) Miller, all of Ellsworth, Kansas.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two sons, Larry and Troy Meitler; a daughter, Karen Bender; his twin sister, Carolyn Gehring; brother, Dean Meitler; and sister, Alice Oller.

Clarence Richard 'Dick' Meitler

Phyllis Mae (Wagner) Screen, 89, died on September 11, 2023 at Pinnacle Park Nursing home in Salina, Kansas. Phyllis was born on the family farm north of Culbertson, Nebraska on October 14, 1933 to Arthur and Wanda (Jerome) Wagner. 

She graduated from Culbertson High School in 1951 and attended McCook Community College.

Phyllis taught at a one-room schoolhouse in rural Kansas for two years. It was at a get together there that she met James Screen. They married on May 5, 1957. 

During their early married years, Phyllis left the workforce to support the needs of the farm and the family’s church, school, and 4-H activities. She later returned to the workforce as a certified nurse assistant at the Decatur County Hospital, where she retired.

Phyllis and Jim loved to travel, taking numerous bus trips, camping trips or later, vacations to visit children and grandchildren. One of her greatest joys was being grandma to 10 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. 

Another one of Phyllis’ passions was music. She enjoyed playing the organ and piano at church each Sunday as well as other special occasions. Phyllis passed that love of music to her children and grandchildren.

Phyllis is survived by a brother George Wagner, sisters-in-law, Dee Wagner and Deanie Wagner, her children, Larry Screen of Salina, Kansas, Susan (Peggy Schramm) Screen of San Carlos, California, and Vivian (Edward) Russ, WaKeeney, Kansas; grandchildren Justin Screen, Curtis Screen, Megan (Adam) Nelson, Nathan Russ, Josiah Russ, Sarah (Michael) Smith, Erin (Joshua Brame) Smith, Andrew Russ, Michelle Russ and Nicole Russ, great-grandchildren Jonathan (Savannah) Nelson, Aiden Nelson, Levi Nelson, Timothy Nelson, Isaac Nelson, Mandy Russ, Isaac Russ, JJ Russ, Jacob Russ, Adrione Smith, Jeremiah Smith, Rebekah Smith, Ronin Smith and Rawllin Russ. 

She is preceded in death by her husband James Screen, sister Dian Simpson, brothers Richard Wagner and Duane Wagner, brother-in-law David Simpson and two granddaughters-in-law, Mary Russ and Karen Russ.

There will be a funeral at First Covenant Church in Salina, Kansas on Friday, September 15, 2023 at 2:00 p.m. with refreshments following. Another funeral will be held in Oberlin, Kansas on Saturday, September 16, 2023 at 2:30 at Pauls Funeral Home in Oberlin with gravesite service following.

Cleora May McPhillamy passed away at the Valley Vista Good Samaritan Center, in Wamego, Kansas, on September 13, 2023, at the age of 72.

Cleora was born on November 10, 1945 to her parents Carlos and Queenie (Iman) Pickel.

She was married to Albert Bruce McPhillamy on May 8, 1963.

Cleora is preceded in death by her husband Albert Bruce McPhillamy, father Carlos Pickel, father by choice Norman Leidig, and mother Queenie Leidig.

Survivors include her children Christina Calmes and husband LeRoy of Saint George, Kansas, Shawn McPhillamy of San Benito, Texas, Angelica Petersen of Colona, Illinois, William McPhillamy and wife Theresa of Beaver City, Nebraska, Bambi McPhillamy and significant other Chad Darrah of Manhattan, Kansas, and Phillip McPhillamy and wife Amy of Grand Island, Nebraska, as well as many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

A graveside service, officiated by Pastor Troy Buss, will be held at the Marvin Cemetery at 11:30 a.m., in Glade, Kansas.

Lea Ann Pakkebier, age 51, of Shawnee, Kansas passed away on August 26, 2023. She was born December 17, 1971 in Norton, KS, the daughter of Marvin and Nelda Pakkebier.

A longtime resident of Pawnee and Rush counties, she was a radiology technician. 

She graduated from Holcomb High School and then Fort Hays State University and was a member of the Tri Sigma Sorority.

She was a Girl Scout leader, and enjoyed baking and art, and spending time with family and friends. She also enjoyed attending her daughter’s sporting events, recitals, horse shows, and other activities.

She is survived by her daughter Allie Pakkebier (Anthony Ventura) of Overland Park, KS and her sister Pam Welsh (Ty) of Shawnee KS and six nieces and nephews Tyson, Trenton, Carly, Tanner, Ben, and Rylie.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

A memorial service is planned for 1:00 p.m., Saturday, September 23 at the Harrington Family Event Center, next door to the funeral home with fellowship to follow after the service.
