Midwest Energy announced today it will not ask for its Board of Directors to proceed with a proposal to change natural gas rates while its communities are facing challenges from COVID-19. &nbsp;

“We believe it best for our members to suspend this matter while everyone is dealing with this rapidly changing pandemic,” said Pat Parke, Midwest Energy’s CEO.&nbsp; “Our customers and their businesses are facing exceptional challenges right now.&nbsp; We’re sensitive to that, and we don’t want to contribute any additional stress,” Parke added. &nbsp; &nbsp;

Midwest Energy’s residential and general service gas delivery rates would remain the lowest in Kansas had the proposal advanced.&nbsp; The proposed changes, the first since 2016 and announced in February, would have seen an average residential customer’s bill increase by $1.87 per month based on actual 2018 gas use.&nbsp;&nbsp;

A series of public meetings to explain the proposed changes were scheduled for early April in Hays, Colby and Scott City, but were cancelled due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.&nbsp; The Board of Directors was scheduled to vote on the proposed rate changes at a public meeting in Hays on May 18.&nbsp; Had rate changes been approved, they would have went into effect July 1, 2020.&nbsp;

“Ultimately, a natural gas rate adjustment will be necessary in the future,” Parke added.&nbsp; “We will closely monitor this pandemic and its economic fallout and make a recommendation to the Board to reconsider the proposal at the appropriate time.”&nbsp; &nbsp;

Data released by the Kansas Department of Health and Environment Friday shows testing for COVID-19 in northwestern Kansas counties is extremely limited, even as the outbreak spreads and private labs begin testing for the coronavirus.

In Ellis County, 14 tests had been reported, but all returned negative for the virus. That amount of testing represents only 0.49 per 1,000 people.

K-State aging specialist offers suggestions

MANHATTAN, Kan. – With the new coronavirus hitting older adults particularly hard, many nursing homes are protecting their residents by keeping visitors away. And seniors living in their own homes are encouraged to limit visits from friends and relatives so as not to spread the disease.

But that definitely doesn’t mean communication should stop, said Kansas State University assistant professor Erin Yelland.

“We know that older adults are at a very high risk with this virus. Not only are they at higher risk for experiencing severe illness as a result of COVID-19, but they’re also dying at higher rates,” said Yelland, who is a specialist in adult development and aging with K-State Research and Extension.&nbsp;

It’s a struggle because it’s important for seniors to have social contact with family, friends and neighbors, but right now it’s important to increase physical distance from them, making this the best time to take advantage of current technology, Yelland said.

She suggests making phone calls, sending text messages or emails: “Whatever type of technology an older adult is comfortable with, but we can also encourage them to try newer technology such as video chat. Those can be quite easy through Facebook Messenger, Skype, What’sApp, or using a phone’s FaceTime feature.”

Sending photos or videos to older adults who likely are more isolated than usual, is also a way to stay connected.

“I know I love sending and receiving videos and pictures of my younger family members and of course older adults would love receiving those of their kids or grandkids as well,” Yelland said.

The contact doesn’t have to be lengthy, perhaps just checking in to ask how they are, asking what plans they have that day, or sending a quick picture of the grandkids, she said. This kind of contact can reduce the likelihood of anxiety and stress.

“Not only are we staying connected with older adults socially via technology, but we’re also using that as a way of checking in on them. We know that if an older adult lives alone, is socially isolated, they can be at higher risk for all sorts of things, such as depression, anxiety and different illnesses as well,” she added.

When checking in with a senior, it’s a good idea to ask if they need a medication refill or anything else that might warrant communication with their doctor, Yelland said, noting that now more than ever, telehealth is useful.

“I know for a fact that many doctors now are doing more telehealth,” she said, referring to the ability for patients to connect with their health providers through telecommunications. “It’s a really neat opportunity to stay connected with your physician when you can’t get in for an appointment because of physical distancing.”

“We were we unable to put this (telehealth) into place for years, but now all of a sudden we’ve been able to get this done in a couple of weeks. These types of things are a really bright silver lining and if we’re able to keep this going after the COVID-19 pandemic is over, we could see a lot of benefits, and not only for older adults, but for everyone.”

That means internet access in rural communities is more important than ever, not only for seniors to be able to communicate with doctors, caregivers and families, but also for children in order for them to do their schoolwork.

“Really, this is a bright shining call that we need to be addressing the issue of internet access all over our country.”

Circumstances vary, but for older adults who have caregivers that don’t normally live with them, it’s sometimes best for the caregiver to move into the senior’s home or for the senior to move into the caregiver’s home temporarily to reduce the chances of virus exposure from someone coming in and out of the senior’s home.

“We know that caregiving is an incredibly stressful job, but now in this time of COVID-19 and the stress and uncertainty and all of this physical distancing that we’re encouraged to do, it can become even more burdensome,” said Yelland, who through her role as an extension specialist, routinely works with caregivers across Kansas. “If you live out of town, but your sister is normally the one who takes care of mom, be sure that you’re checking in on that sister and see if there’s anything extra that you can do from far away to help reduce the stress and burden on them.”

Yelland said the “sandwich generation” – those adults who are not only taking care of aging&nbsp;&nbsp;parents and maybe even grandparents, but also children – already deal with difficult circumstances, but those difficulties have been heightened by the pandemic.

“Now everyone is home 24-7. We don’t have the sort of reprieve when kiddos go to school or when you go to work and you’re in your own space and you’re able to concentrate on yourself for a little bit. So we’re seeing this intense pressure being put on people,” she said. “It’s wonderful to be able to spend more time with family members, but it can also be stressful.”

Apart but connected: Stay in touch with older adults

The Hays Fire Department will be inspecting and flow testing fire hydrants on April 6, 2020 in the area of Ash St. to Canterbury Dr. between 27th St. and 22nd St. 

This is part of a coordinated effort by the City of Hays to inspect all fire hydrants in the city and flush all water mains annually. 

Inspecting fire hydrants ensures that the valves operate properly and that there is no damage or obstructions that will prevent or interfere with the prompt use of fire hydrants in an emergency. Firefighters are also checking the pressure and volume of water mains in each neighborhood for firefighting purposes.

 The associated flushing of water mains allows chlorine to be distributed throughout the system to eliminate bio-filming in the water mains. 

Slight discoloration of the water supply may be encountered although there will be no health risks to the consumer. 

All reasonable efforts will be taken to minimize the inconvenience to the public.&nbsp;

Fire hydrant flushing continues

Business are not the only ones being hurt as a result of the coronavirus shutdowns.&nbsp;

Big Brothers Big Sisters statewide, including the office in Ellis County, had to postpone their annual Bowl for Kids Sake events.

The Ellis County event was planned for May 4.&nbsp;This is the first time in its 21 years the event has been postponed. 

The annual fundraiser, one of the organization's largest, raised thousands of dollars for the local organization, Jenny Bates, Ellis County BBBS director, said.

The Bowl for Kids Sake postponement is anticipated to cause a cash-flow problem for the organization, Bates said.

Although Ellis BBBS already had its main sponsors in line, teams, who brought in pledges, were just being formed.

In an attempt to make up some of the revenue from Bowl for Kids Sake, BBBS has launched the Big Night In.

Donors can go to the Big Brothers Big Sisters <a href="https://www.4kidsake.org/BIGNightIn/Donate">Big Night In webpage</a>&nbsp;to donate. Use the county pull down menu to direct donations to the Ellis County BBBS organization.

Big Night In donations will be taken through April 2o.

"We are hoping that if many give a little, we can make up some of what we won't see from Bowl for Kids Sake," Bates said.

Although Bigs and their Little matches can't see each other in person because of social distancing rules, they are keeping in touch through phone calls, emails, texts, letters and video chats.

Bates and her staff continue to work, although from home, to help the matches maintain those connections.

"We still have to provide our support services to our families and our Littles and Bigs, so we can keep the safety and the quality to the high standards we have for all of our matches," Bates said.

She said she did not want the virus outbreak to change the services children are receiving from Big Brothers Big Sisters.

"These children that we are serving need their Bigs now more than ever as they are going through all of these changes," Bates said.

"Their school is looking different for them. Jobs at home might be different with their parents or who they are living with. We don't want their Big not to be there. It looks different, but they are still there supporting them."

Bates said her staff is staying in contact with its matches to facilitate communication. It is also serving as a clearinghouse for resources for Littles' families.

"The children we are serving and the families we are serving are some of the most vulnerable already in our community," Bates said. "This is definitely going to be hard for some of them."

BBBS has provided talking points to Bigs to use if their Littles have questions about the coronavirus.

Ellis BBBS is still accepting and processing applications for matches. The local chapter has 50 children on its waiting list.

Bates said she hopes she can have more matches ready when social distancing restricts are lifted.

Beginning at 8 a.m. Monday, East Ninth between Allen and Milner in Hays will be closed to though traffic for pavement repairs.

Work is scheduled to be completed by the end of the day on Friday.

Pavement repairs will close portion of East Ninth

The Department of Teacher Education at Fort Hays State University has been approved for a $73,490 grant from the Teacher Education Competitive Grant Program from the Kansas Board of Regents for the 2020 to 2021 academic year.&nbsp;

Fort Hays State will contribute matching funds of $36,745.&nbsp;

The grant was awarded as a renewal for the Innovative Pathways to Licensure and Competency in Elementary Education.&nbsp;

Regents grant will support elementary education at FHSU

Due to the COVID-19 closures and the uncertainty as to when we may be able to restart Hays Recreation Commission programs we postponed the printing and mailing of the Spring &amp; Summer Hays Rec Times scheduled to be delivered April 3,&nbsp;and the start of registration.

This is not how we wanted to start this spring and summer season, but feel that until we have a date in which we can safely resume operations, it is better to not take registrations and then have to issue more credits and refunds, if we can’t start on the given dates.

We do hope that there will be some kind of summer season, what that season will look like all depends on how things progress.&nbsp; So keep checking back for updates.&nbsp; 

Our staff has been busy posting videos and posts to keep connected to our HRC family.&nbsp; 

And if you are looking for a summer job we are still taking applications for Hays Aquatic Park because once given the all-clear, it is full speed ahead to UNPLUG AND PLAY!

Three-day weather outlook

Last week President Trump&nbsp;issued a Major Disaster Declaration for the State of Kansas due to the Coronavirus pandemic. This will open up additional federal funding options for State, tribal, and local governments
 to use for emergency protective measures, including direct Federal assistance. I am thankful this administration is using the full extent of the federal government to deliver relief and assistance to all who are adversely impacted.

Last week, my staff held a call with Kansas Dept of Labor Secretary Delia Garcia and members of her staff to learn more about the Pandemic Unemployment Assistance (PUA) program
 authorized by the CARES Act. This new program will help contractors, part-time workers and others that were previously ineligible for unemployment insurance collect much-needed assistance during these unprecedented times. Sec. Garcia and her staff are currently
 working with the U.S. Department of Labor to launch the new program for Kansans.&nbsp;In the meantime, we ask that Kansans who have lost their job because of the coronavirus outbreak take the following steps:

Employers who are moving several employees onto unemployment are asked to use the spreadsheet application method to submit all employees at once, instead of having each employee apply separately.

Using new data from researchers at the University of Washington, President Trump and his team believe that while the coronavirus will peak around April 15th in the United States,
 it will peak in Kansas in late April or early May.

 seen in hospitals across the nation, place two or even four patients onto a single ventilator with some minor adjustments.The critical issue going forward will be health care staff – the doctors, nurses and respiratory therapists that are required to provide patients with around-the-clock
 care. We must continue to do everything we can to support our healthcare workers on the front lines of this crisis.&nbsp;

In the face of this public health care challenge, I am doing all I can to provide federal resources for our families, small businesses and organization that serve our communities.But there is so much we can all be doing at the community level to support one another and keep services going. I encourage folks to help one another - like delivering meals to the elderly through the Meals on Wheels program or volunteering at your local food bank. This pandemic has forced
 many volunteers to stop serving so organizations need younger individuals to step in and step up. It's imperative that we continue good hygiene practices and social distancing, but if you can, I urge you to help someone in need. Together we will get through this!

Friday was the first day that small businesses and sole proprietorships will be able to apply for the Paycheck Protection Program (PPP, a provision of the CARES Act that provides
 small businesses with funds to pay up to 8 weeks of payroll costs, including benefits. Funds can also be used to pay other expenses like utilities, interest on mortgages, and rent. The funds are provided in the form of loans that can be forgiven as long as certain parameters are followed. Small businesses looking to receive them can apply through any federally
 insured depository institution, federally insured credit union, and Farm Credit System institution that is participating. Republicans on the House Small Business Committee have put together an extensive guide that details all of the provisions designed to help small business owners respond

Kansas Corn STEM is the award-winning education program of the Kansas Corn Commission, it encompasses educational programs that provide lessons for teachers and students from the elementary to the high school level.&nbsp;
 The lessons will help students learn about science and agriculture using tools like virtual breakout box activities, videos and at-home experiments that can be done with normal household items.

Faculty at Northwest Kansas Technical College in Goodland are putting their technical skills to work manufacturing plastic face masks using the college’s 3-D printers. These masks
 can replace the disposable masks worn by health care professionals, law enforcement offices and other emergency personnel. The college has received orders from area hospitals, the county health department and local law enforcement agencies. College President Ben Schears said the college is in the process of purchasing 4 more 3D printers after receiving local donations. That makes 8 printers at the college,
 which Schears said will be running around the clock to make the equipment those on the front lines deserve and need.

In the midst of this public health crisis and economic slowdown, I'm hearing some good news from producers across Kansas.International demand for&nbsp;Kansas Wheat&nbsp;and&nbsp;Kansas Sorghum is up and our producers are busy filling orders around the world. Misleading headlines will have you believe there is a food shortage. The truth is we have enough commodities here at home to feed the country, and the world, for many more weeks

MARSHALL: Doctor's Note April 6

“Be nice” — two words not found anywhere among the 45 words of the First Amendment.

Also not found: “positive,” or “get ya” or “trust.”

All of those words are out of place in a brief statement leading off 
the Bill of Rights at the start of our Constitution, the document that 
empowers all of us to express ourselves as we wish, regardless of 
whether others agree with or like what we have to say or write.

We — not government — get to choose which of the concepts found in those words that we will follow, live up to, or earn.

The words come to mind because, once again, President Trump had a 
contentious moment with a journalist. He squared off Sunday with “PBS 
NewsHour” reporter Yamiche Alcindor during the now-daily briefing on the COVID-19 coronavirus outbreak.

Alcindor asked Trump about comments&nbsp;he&nbsp;made during a Fox News 
interview regarding requests from governors for medical equipment to 
combat the virus’ effects, which the president claimed were inflated or 
unnecessary. Alcindor said she was quoting him directly from the 
program.

As Alcindor asked the question, Trump interrupted to say he had not 
made such comments, and then said, “Why don’t you people act in a little
 more positive? … It’s always get ya, get ya, get ya,” Trump&nbsp;said to 
Alcindor. “You know what? That’s why nobody trusts the media anymore.”

Actually, a lot of people do trust the free press today. By 
most accounts, journalists are earning trust — or re-earning it, if 
that’s your point of view — and disproving misinformation by reporting 
facts about the coronavirus pandemic, by holding accountable government 
officials high and low as they respond to the virus’ spread and by 
providing the national, regional and local news we need in this 
unprecedented time of COVID-19.

From Dallas to Washington D.C., Tampa to Seattle, New York to Denver,
 readership — mostly measured for digital versus traditional news 
outlets — is up, particularly since the virus crisis hit. Even declining
 audiences for network evening newscasts are, for the moment, stable or 
growing.

But, even with the vital pandemic-reporting role reminding us of the 
value of journalism, there are any number of dire indicators, and even 
gloomier actions, that make it likely we will have even fewer 
journalists and news outlets on the job even as we depend on them more.

A ”Newsonomics” report for NeimanLab, prepared by news industry analyst Ken Doctor,
 coupled with announcements of COVID-19-driven newsroom layoffs and 
cost-cutting orders nationwide, provide hard facts behind the decline in
 of working journalists, which went from a high of more than 60,000 a 
few decades ago to around 23,000 today.

Doctor’s most-recent view: “Tomorrow’s life-or-death decisions for 
newspapers are suddenly today’s, thanks to coronavirus.” He writes that 
virus-related business closures are “gutting local advertising 
overnight.” A week earlier, he wrote about the impending “destruction of
 local news” and noted that since 2006, U.S. newspapers have lost more 
than 70 percent of their advertising revenue. While television news is 
somewhat more robust, industry watchers forecast as great as a 20 
percent drop in revenue over the next three months — and a slow decline 
in advertising and jobs just a few years behind the decline seen by 
print publications.

And as Doctor and other industry experts note, in all too many 
instances where community news outlets still exist, it is as mere 
“shell” operations, publishing with vastly understaffed newsrooms and 
little actual reporting — all with a goal of wringing the last drops of 
revenue from a locality before closing doors.

Gannett, the nation’s largest news publisher, furloughed staff in

A recent column in The New York Times posited the idea of 
“let newspaper chains die” as a way of reinventing the news business 
across the U.S. The notion was to let existing for-profit news 
organizations — many now owned by private equity firms more interested 
in squeezing out profits than funding good journalism — fade away to be 
replaced by independent, locally operated entities more dependent on 
philanthropy or public support than by a disappearing advertising 
marketplace.

The concept of a free press as provided for and protected by the 
nation’s founders was that of a robust set of independent critics, 
working to hold government accountable on behalf of a public and of 
particular value to voters. Such a concept does not thrive — or perhaps 
survive — in a news world populated by “shells,” where there simply 
aren’t enough journalists on the job to keep a watchful eye on what 
elected officials are doing or spending, or not doing or spending. Nor 
should we value the press for being “nice” or even respectful; rather, 
we should value it for asking tough questions, pulling no punches (and 
now and then, not hesitating to praise) in pursuit of the truth.

A free press is defined and justified not by how it works, but by 
what work it does. For our part, we should support what’s left of our 
sources of news, local to national. Subscribe or donate where you can. 
Let our support follow our need for real, fact-based news, which is 
greater now than at any other moment in our lifetimes.

the Bill of Rights at the start of our Constitution, the document that 
empowers all of us to express ourselves as we wish, regardless of 
whether others agree with or like what we have to say or write.We — not government — get to choose which of the concepts found in those words that we will follow, live up to, or earn.The words come to mind because, once again, President Trump had a 
contentious moment with a journalist. He squared off Sunday with “PBS 
NewsHour” reporter Yamiche Alcindor during the now-daily briefing on the COVID-19 coronavirus outbreak.Alcindor asked Trump about comments&nbsp;he&nbsp;made during a Fox News 
interview regarding requests from governors for medical equipment to 
combat the virus’ effects, which the president claimed were inflated or 
unnecessary. Alcindor said she was quoting him directly from the 
program.As Alcindor asked the question, Trump interrupted to say he had not 
made such comments, and then said, “Why don’t you people act in a little
 more positive? … It’s always get ya, get ya, get ya,” Trump&nbsp;said to 
Alcindor. “You know what? That’s why nobody trusts the media anymore.”Actually, a lot of people do trust the free press today. By 
most accounts, journalists are earning trust — or re-earning it, if 
that’s your point of view — and disproving misinformation by reporting 
facts about the coronavirus pandemic, by holding accountable government 
officials high and low as they respond to the virus’ spread and by 
providing the national, regional and local news we need in this 
unprecedented time of COVID-19.From Dallas to Washington D.C., Tampa to Seattle, New York to Denver,
 readership — mostly measured for digital versus traditional news 
outlets — is up, particularly since the virus crisis hit. Even declining
 audiences for network evening newscasts are, for the moment, stable or 
growing.But, even with the vital pandemic-reporting role reminding us of the 
value of journalism, there are any number of dire indicators, and even 
gloomier actions, that make it likely we will have even fewer 
journalists and news outlets on the job even as we depend on them more.A ”Newsonomics” report for NeimanLab, prepared by news industry analyst Ken Doctor,
 coupled with announcements of COVID-19-driven newsroom layoffs and 
cost-cutting orders nationwide, provide hard facts behind the decline in
 of working journalists, which went from a high of more than 60,000 a 
few decades ago to around 23,000 today.Doctor’s most-recent view: “Tomorrow’s life-or-death decisions for 
newspapers are suddenly today’s, thanks to coronavirus.” He writes that 
virus-related business closures are “gutting local advertising 
overnight.” A week earlier, he wrote about the impending “destruction of
 local news” and noted that since 2006, U.S. newspapers have lost more 
than 70 percent of their advertising revenue. While television news is 
somewhat more robust, industry watchers forecast as great as a 20 
percent drop in revenue over the next three months — and a slow decline 
in advertising and jobs just a few years behind the decline seen by 
print publications.And as Doctor and other industry experts note, in all too many 
instances where community news outlets still exist, it is as mere 
“shell” operations, publishing with vastly understaffed newsrooms and 
little actual reporting — all with a goal of wringing the last drops of 
revenue from a locality before closing doors.Gannett, the nation’s largest news publisher, furloughed staff in

FIRST FIVE: ‘Be nice’ is not needed during crisis — a free press is

Rooks County Health Department

Rooks County Health Department is confirming the first presumptive-positive case of COVID-19 in Rooks County. 

The possible case was identified today (Sunday) with testing sent to LabCorp on March 27, 2020. LabCorp, which is approved by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to perform COVID-19 testing, found presumptive-positive results this morning. 

The result will be verified by the CDC lab and treated as positive pending confirmation.

“Rooks County has been prepared for positive cases of novel coronavirus and will continue to work with local and state public health partners in addressing the potential spread of the virus,” said Rooks County Health Officer, Jennifer Brull. “It is our main priority to keep Rooks County citizens healthy and safe.”

The case is located in Rooks County and the patient has been notified and has been in home isolation since the illness started, following CDC guidance. 

Rooks County Health Department is working with local health care providers, partners and the KDHE to identify and contact people who may have come into contact with the individual while infectious and will monitor them for fever and respiratory symptoms. 

“We will continue to monitor the situation closely. In the meantime, the general public can help. Please adhere to the current “Safer at Home” order and practice social distancing,” said Lori Eichman, Rooks County Health Department administrator. “Wash your hands and stay home. If you are sick, please contact your primary care provider by phone for information and evaluation.”

If you have recently taken an ocean or riverboat cruise, traveled out of the country or to any of the following states: Louisiana, Colorado, Washington, California, Florida, New York, Illinois or New Jersey, the KDHE as ordered self-quarantine for 14 days following travel. 

If you develop fever with lower respiratory symptoms including cough and shortness of breath within 14 days of your travel or have had contact with someone with a laboratory-confirmed case of COVID-19, continue to stay home and call your healthcare provider.

“I am grateful to the legislators who stood up today—no matter their reasoning—to reject this bill…”

So said Rachel Sweet, Kansas Lobbyist for Planned Parenthood, the world’s largest abortion provider. These comments were made to the Associated Press shortly after four Republicans in the Kansas House joined every Democrat in blocking passage of the Value Them Both Amendment to the Kansas Constitution.&nbsp;

Representative Don Hineman, R-Dighton, having a mixed pro-life voting record but from a solidly pro-life district, recently penned a statewide op-ed attempting to justify why he was one of the four Republicans to vote with the abortion industry. The Representative not only attempted to muddy the waters, but also tried to cast dispersions on the Kansas pro-life community for holding him accountable for his record. The fact of the matter is that Hineman voted against the most important pro-life measure of our generation. This column will simply explain the consequences of that vote and ask the central question: If Representative Hineman is pro-life like he claims, why is he working against the pro-life movement at this most critical time?&nbsp;

The Value Them Both Amendment was crafted and sought as a remedy to recent state court rulings that have endangered almost every limit on the abortion industry. Twenty laws, including bans on late-term and taxpayer funded abortions, and parental notification laws for minors seeking abortion, could soon be struck down. When comparing Kansas abortion rates from 1999 to today, these laws have helped to save an average of 15 lives a day.

The 15 lives a day averages out to 5,475 baby girls and boy annually—think of a town bigger than Russell, Kansas. Of course, this doesn't describe the pain and loss inflicted on 15 women a day. The stakes in passing the Value Them Both Amendment are high, and that is why a vote against the amendment is nothing short of cruel and antithetical to our values as Kansans.

Representative Hineman claims that, despite his vote, he is “pro-life” and that he drafted his own "alternative" to the Value Them Both Amendment.&nbsp; He continues to take issue with the proposed election date that the amendment would be submitted to voters (State Constitutional Amendments require two-thirds majorities in both legislative chambers and must be approved by voters at any election). He even makes the bizarre claim that KFL—and by extension the statewide coalition that supports Value Them Both—is somehow “lazy” for not agreeing with him.&nbsp;

To be clear, the Kansas Catholic Bishops, Leadership of the Missouri Synod Lutheran Church, Pastors from every corner of the state and the Family Policy Alliance are working with our organization on this effort. To further clarify, everyone previously mentioned supports placing the amendment on the August ballot. The reason for this is that the abortion industry will outspend our grassroots campaign by massive proportions. Ballot measures in other states—even very conservative states—have shown that the abortion industry will do anything to stop Value Them Both. There are too many lives at stake to risk on Hineman’s flawed (and maybe deceptively designed) strategy.&nbsp;

All of this should lead the reader to ask this simple question: If Representative Hineman is pro-life like he claims, why is he working against the pro-life movement at this most critical time?&nbsp;

Answer: It’s hard to claim you are pro-life when your position is celebrated by the abortion industry. It is also hard to claim you are pro-life when your vote opened the door to late-term and taxpayer funded abortion in Kansas.&nbsp;

Running from this vote will be difficult for Representative Hineman, and his constituents won’t soon forget.

Kansans for Life: Abortion industry celebrates Hineman’s position

Kansas is prepared for an uptick in coronavirus cases, according to First District Congressman Roger Marshall.

Dr. Marshall, a Great Bend gynecologist, wrote in his Friday newsletter about new data, as of April 1, from researchers at the University of Washington.&nbsp;

"President Trump and his team believe that while the&nbsp;coronavirus will peak around April 15 in the United States, it will peak in Kansas in late April or early May," wrote Marshall.&nbsp;

"The critical issue going forward will be health care staff – the doctors, nurses and respiratory therapists that are required to provide patients with around-the-clock care. We must continue to do everything we can to support our healthcare workers on the front lines of this crisis."&nbsp;
