HMS is going to have staff help with this process, and the staff will have the items bagged and ready to be picked up on the front lawn of HMS according to the following schedule.

HMS sets day to retrieve personal belongings

Due to the stay-at-home order, First Care Clinic in Hays will be reserving appointments for populations considered to be at higher risk for severe illness from COVID-19.  

Appointments from 8 to 10 a.m. daily will be reserved for patients 65 years and older and for patients with underlying health conditions.  

First Care Clinic has also implemented a screening process due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

  All patients reporting flu-like symptoms will be asked a series of questions before scheduling an appointment.

 In addition, waiting areas are continuously being disinfected and have been reconfigured to allow for social distancing. 

 Also, First Care Clinic is asking that patients please not walk into the clinic without an appointment.&nbsp;If you would like to schedule an appointment, please call us at 785-621-4990.

Appointments reserved for high-risk patients at First Care Clinic

What started as a legislative leash on Gov. Laura Kelly’s efforts to battle the coronavirus epidemic has turned into what might be called a fan base by legislative leaders, who have found no immediate problems with the extraordinary steps she has taken to hold down the spread of the disease.

And the legislative leadership – the Legislative Coordinating Council (LCC) – has so far found no reason to overturn any of at least seven orders by the governor since she declared the COVID-19 emergency March 12, just a few days after President Donald Trump declared the national COVID-19 emergency.

Lawmakers didn’t have much problem passing a resolution that gives the LCC -- the five-Republican/two Democrat panel that usually sets meeting dates, defines legislative procedures and authorizes out-of-state travel by legislators -- authority to scrutinize every Kelly Executive Order (EO) to respond to the then- and still-growing spread of the disease.

Politically? The Republican-dominated Legislature quickly identified areas of public life it wanted the governor to leave alone during the pandemic. It was guns, liquor, seizure of property and such, issues that were appealing to many Kansas Republicans.

Kelly’s first major Kansas-shaking order was to close schools for the remainder of the year. Not education which is now going to be conducted largely over the Internet and educational plans that school officials are sharing with the parents of schoolchildren, but closing down the buildings where the students were at risk of catching or spreading to bring home the pandemic.

That was a big step, but the LCC didn’t reject it.

And this past Saturday,&nbsp;Kelly extended the state-stay-home order that last week was a local government decision from border-to-border into counties that don’t appear to have a single COVID-19 case confirmed.

That was the decision that clearly was one that lawmakers representing those COVID-19-free, or at least with no confirmed cases, counties were wary of. In reaction, the LCC met, mostly remotely, the next day but let the order stand.

It was a dramatic stretch of the health safety-required restriction on the activities of Kansans and Kansas businesses that are in areas where the coronavirus is mostly just a headline, with no local families involved – yet.

Clearly for now, the extraordinary power the governor’s EO hands her still shakes the Legislature.&nbsp; For at least a couple reasons.

Everything Kelly has done through EOs so far has restricted or at least complicated Kansans’ lives and the businesses they depend on for a livelihood. Those are big steps, and it is going to be difficult when this is all over to compute whether those interferences from under the Statehouse dome were necessary. That’s something Kansans, when this pandemic is over, will be dissecting for years.

But the LCC? And the Legislature it represents?

So far, it’s walked across the snow and left no tracks. There were some questions at the LCC meetings, but not a single vote for or against any of Kelly’s orders. That’s called no tracks in the snow, just where the Legislature would prefer to be in a likely life-or-death battle against coronavirus.

Until the outbreak is eventually stifled, nobody wants to be identified as a legislator who cost a single life by overturning an EO.

You gotta wonder why lawmakers wanted to hand themselves a role in a crisis like this one. Once the guns and liquor and seizure of property were taken out of the equation, it was pretty much a situation where the governor gets all the credit or all the blame for whatever the disease does to Kansas.

HAWVER: GOP-leaning oversight panel on board with Kelly's order

Kansas Common crude at CHS in McPherson starts the week at just $11.75 a barrel after dropping another dollar on Friday.&nbsp; Crude prices in Kansas are down $23 from the first of the month to their lowest level since 1975.

U.S. crude futures prices were down six percent in late morning trading Monday, briefly dipping below $20. The benchmark contract on the Nymex was down $1.30 to $20.21 per barrel. London Brent posted a ten percent drop, down $2.49 to $22.44 per barrel.

Oil traders are taking advantage crude oil's growing contango market, in which prices for future delivery are higher. Reuters reports traders chartered five supertankers in one day with an eye toward storing crude oil at sea. The vessels were booked for storage of at least three months.

Monday's gasoline prices were down to $1.47 a gallon at several outlets in Hays, and $1.69 across Great Bend.&nbsp; AAA says the national average is a little over a penny away from dropping below two dollars a gallon. U.S. prices are 11 cents cheaper than a week ago, 43 cents less than a month ago, and 68 cents less than last year at this time. The average across Kansas is $1.76. &nbsp;

Baker Hughes reported the biggest drop in recent memory in its weekly Rotary Rig Count, with 728 active drilling rigs across the U.S., a drop of 40 oil rigs.&nbsp; Most of the decline came in horizontal rigs, with the count in Texas down 29 rigs. Oklahoma dropped four rigs. &nbsp;

Independent Oil &amp; Gas Service reports a slight drop in its weekly Rig Count in Kansas, with nine active rigs west of Wichita, down one. The count in eastern Kansas was unchanged at one active drilling rig. Kansas operators now list an additional six rigs as cold stacked in the yard.&nbsp;

Operators received just two new drilling permits last week, one in Rooks County and another in Cheyenne County. That brings the running total for this year to 159 permits, down from 195 at this time last year. Kansas operators completed 28 wells last week. The running year-to-date total is 302 completions compared to 420 at this time last year.&nbsp; Independent Oil &amp; Gas Service reports one completion in Barton County, two in Ellis County, one in Russell County and one in Stafford County. &nbsp;

The government says U.S. crude oil stockpiles increased by 1.6 million barrels last week.&nbsp; Inventories are about three percent below the five-year seasonal average.

The Energy Information Administration says weekly crude production in the U.S. dipped slightly last week, after topping 13 million barrels per day the week before. For the week ending March 20, EIA reports total domestic production of 12.96 million barrels per day.

U.S. crude-oil imports dropped again last week. EIA says the four-week average is seven percent less than a year ago.&nbsp;

Unemployed oilfield workers in Canada could soon get jobs cleaning up abandoned wells.&nbsp; The Globe and Mail reports Federal and provincial lawmakers are saying little about the details of the $10 billion package, because negotiations continue. Energy CEOs in Alberta sent a letter to the Prime Minister asking for the government purchase of distressed assets, the suspension of the Canadian carbon tax and suspension of all income taxes at every level.

The Trump administration will continue to urge Congress to put up $3 billion to fill the Strategic Petroleum with U.S. Crude. The Senate removed the funding from last week's stimulus bill to break an impasse, but S&amp;P Global Platts reports the administration views the purchases as relief for the patch and will continue to pursue the funding. The Department of Energy last week formally withdrew a solicitation to buy 30 million barrels of medium and heavy crude a day.&nbsp;

Weekly oil-by-rail shipments in the U.S. declined for the first time since January, amid a nine percent drop in total rail traffic. A spokesman for the Association of American Railroads says it wouldn't be a surprise to see rail volumes in many categories soften in the coming weeks as the response to the COVID-19 pandemic continues.&nbsp; But it appears we may have seen the worst of the impact of the virus on trade with Asia. U.S. operators filled 12,105 tankers with petroleum and petroleum products last week, a slight drop from a year ago.&nbsp; Oil-by-rail in Canada continues to grow, gaining nearly nine percent.

Reuters cites industry sources saying Saudi Arabia has yet to significantly boost its crude shipments. The kingdom planned to ship more than 10 million barrels per day starting in May. But so far, March exports are falling well short of that, which could reflect lower demand despite the big drop in prices. The Saudis have announced a huge new stimulus plan totaling $32 billion to support a populace hit hard by both the pandemic and the collapse of oil prices.

Hays optometrist to discuss eye health on SHPBS

ELLIS COUNTY — Two people were injured in an accident just before 8a.m. Monday in Ellis County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2006 Chevy Cobalt driven by&nbsp;Willhite, Anthony J. Willhite, 20, Mount Vernon, MO., was westbound on Interstate 70 one mile east of U.S. 183.

The vehicle left the roadway. The driver overcorrected into the north ditch and rolled.

EMS transported Willhite and a passenger Delany June Rose Moore, 19, Springfield, MO., to Hays Medical Center. They were not wearing seat belts, according to the KHP.

HaysMed initiates no-visitor policy due to COVID-19

The Hays USD 489 school will be discussing continuous learning plans at its meeting at 6:30 p.m. Monday.

The meeting will not open to the public as a result of corona virus precautions, but it will be live streamed on the local access channels through Eagle and Nex-Tech.

Schools have or will be sending letters to families detailing via email on what their continuos learning plans will look like.

Continuous learning in the district is set to start Wednesday.

The district also will approve a continuous learning waiver for the state. This will include paying all current hourly employees during the balance of the 2019-2020 school year.

Continuous Learning Plans are due to the Kansas State Department of Education by April 8.

Rusty Lindsay, USD 489 director of building and grounds, will discuss bids for a secure entrance for Roosevelt Elementary School.

The low bid was from Commercial Builders of Hays for $57,800.

Superintendent Ron Wilson will give the school board an update on the sale of the former Washington school building.&nbsp;

The building was vacated in the fall when the Early Childhood Connections program moved to its new home on 13th Street.

The school board extended a contract in July with&nbsp;Overland Property Group to purchase the school for $500,000.

The developer wants to renovate the former school into apartments, but the purchase is contingent on the developer receiving tax credits for the renovation.

TREGO COUNTY—&nbsp; Two people were injured in an accident just before 1:30a.m. Monday in Trego County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2005 Ford Taurus driven by Clinton W. Rogers, 34, Hoisington, was westbound on Interstate 70 five miles west of the Kansas 23.

The Ford traveled off the road into the median. The driver overcorrected to the right. The Ford struck the south guardrail, rotated 180 degrees and ended on all 4 wheels facing north.

EMS transported&nbsp;Rogers and a passenger Shanail A. Steward, 45, Colby, to Gove County Medical Center. Both were properly restrained at the time of the accident, according to the KHP.

Western Co-op Electric temporary office closing 

BUNKER HILL – In response to area school closings due to the coronavirus, Smoky Hills PBS will begin broadcasting an “At-Home Learning” schedule in support of families, educators, and students.  This weekly daytime schedule will begin airing on Monday, March 30 on Smoky Hills PBS.   

 “Our viewers may see some programming changes in our daytime children's educational programs due to Kansas school buildings being closed,” said Larry Calvery, Smoky Hills PBS general manager.

 “With students at home, we know it’s a trying time for teachers, parents, and caregivers to keep everyone learning so we are very excited to be able to provide educational programming for all ages of children in central and western Kansas," Calvery said.  <li>If your tap water appears dirty, flush the water lines by letting the water run until it clears.

						</li><li>Boil water for one minute prior to drinking or food preparation or use bottled water.

						</li><li>Dispose of ice cubes and do not use ice from a household automatic icemaker.

						</li><li>Disinfect dishes and other food contact surfaces by immersion for at least one minute in clean tap
water that contains one teaspoon of unscented household bleach per gallon of water.

						</li><li>Water used for bathing does not generally need to be boiled. Supervision of children is necessary
while bathing so that water is not ingested. Persons with cuts or severe rashes may wish to consult
their physicians.
The advisory took effect on March 30, 2020 and will remain in effect until the conditions that placed the
system at risk of bacterial contamination are resolved. KDHE officials issued the advisory because of a
loss of pressure. Failure to maintain adequate pressure may result in a loss of chlorine residuals and
bacterial contamination.
Regardless of whether the public water supplier or KDHE announced a boil water advisory, only KDHE
can issue the rescind order following testing at a certified laboratory.

Everyday continues to bring new information and new challenges to all of
us. I did not issue a report last week, as there was so much information coming
out on Conronavirus/COVID-19 that talking about non-related bills did not seem
on many people’s minds.

As you are aware, Governor Kelly has issued a “Safer at
Home” declaration on Saturday, and there still a number of questions.&nbsp;

There are a couple of websites to get the
latest information: <a href="http://www.kdheks.gov/">kdheks.gov</a> and kansastogether.com. If you do not have
access to the internet, hopefully a family member or friend can share
information.&nbsp; Also, local media like this
newspaper or online publication plus the local radio stations do a great job
keeping you updated as new information is available.

The governor’s office has also created an email account
specifically for business owners:&nbsp; <a href="mailto:keff@ks.gov">keff@ks.gov</a>&nbsp;
&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;If you have specific
questions on what you can and can’t do this is one of the best sources to gain
a direct response from the Governor’s office.

I have been on several conference calls and remote meetings
learning what I can about the best way to handle this pandemic; everyday we
learn more and in a non-political fashion we have worked on solutions. &nbsp;Some have tried to make political points and
that is unfortunate. I have been in contact with the Governor’s office several
times and they always look for answers to your concerns. There will be a time
for politics, but now is not one of them.&nbsp;


Kansas Secretary of State Scott Schwab wanted to remind
citizens: Under Executive Order 20-13, the deadline for filing 2019 tax returns
for individual income tax, fiduciary income tax, corporate income tax, and
privilege tax with due dates between April 15 and July 15, 2020 has been
extended. The annual report deadline for those entities has also been extended
to July 15, 2020. 

<a></a>Also, from the Kansas Department of
Agriculture: Governor Laura Kelly has issued a statewide “stay home” order
(Executive Order No. 20-16, it is important to emphasize that those food and
agriculture businesses must keep a strong focus on their essential functions
and follow safety protocols.

The Governor’s Kansas Essential Function Framework, outlined
in the executive order, clearly identifies food and agriculture businesses as
essential functions that are exempt from the stay home order. KDA will continue
to provide support and guidance to those businesses as needed, but urges all of
those in the food and agriculture industry to scrutinize their activities and
staffing and limit them to those which are essential to the food supply chain,
public health and safety, and protection of animal health and welfare.

The food and agriculture industry truly serve an essential
role in this statewide response, and all those who work within that industry
are playing an important part in keeping the state fed, healthy and safe.


“Since Kansas is the fifth largest state in regard to value of agricultural
production, our state’s role in the production of food, fuel and fiber remains
critical for consumers everywhere,” said Secretary of Agriculture Mike Beam.
“KDA is grateful to these dedicated Kansans who are working every day
throughout this crisis and appreciates their commitment.”

KDA reminds those food and agriculture businesses that while
they continue to operate, they must — to the extent possible without
significant disruption to essential functions — use telework capabilities to
avoid meeting in person.

 Any essential functions being performed on-site, or
in-person must — to the extent possible without significant disruption to
essential functions — follow appropriate safety protocols, including
maintaining a six-foot distance between individuals and limiting gatherings to
fewer than 10 people.

 When not performing an essential function or traveling to
or from work to perform an essential function, individuals must adhere to the
stay home order.

In addition, all food and agriculture businesses should
continue to follow all Kansas Department of Health and Environment protocols to
protect the health of their employees: regular handwashing; routine cleaning of
all frequently touched surfaces; adequate supplies of soap and water, hand
sanitizer, cleaning wipes, and tissues; promoting proper coughing and sneezing etiquette;
and especially sending home any employee who is sick or who has been exposed to
COVID-19.

All of these efforts are critical to slowing the spread of
the virus and limiting the impact on local healthcare workers and hospitals.
Although many rural areas have not seen the effect of the virus thus far, the
health care system in those rural areas has a more limited capacity and could
feel the impact quickly if precautions are not taken now.

When will the Kansas Legislature return? We don’t know. We
were scheduled to come back April 27th, but now we are waiting for
leadership to decide when it is time to return to finish the business of the
Kansas Legislature.&nbsp; 

While there were
many bills remaining to have a debate and votes taken, I will assume if we
return the focus will be on recovery and moving forward from
Conronovirus/COVID-19.&nbsp; 

We will be
dealing with a number of economic challenges and at this time we don’t know
where the road to recovery will take us.

 One thing I do know is the road begins
by supporting our local businesses. These family operations are the ones that
help sponsor the ball teams, buy yearbook ads and support almost any cause of
function that goes on in our communities.&nbsp;
While it is convenient to shop on-line, and some time you have no
choice, but those companies don’t support you and your family like the local
hardware store or restaurant.&nbsp; 

The last
few weeks, I continue to hear stories of good neighbors being good neighbors
and I am sure that will continue.&nbsp; Be
patient and kind. Wash your hands. Practice social distancing (many farmers and
ranchers do this daily).&nbsp;

in the executive order, clearly identifies food and agriculture businesses as
essential functions that are exempt from the stay home order. KDA will continue
to provide support and guidance to those businesses as needed, but urges all of
those in the food and agriculture industry to scrutinize their activities and
staffing and limit them to those which are essential to the food supply chain,
public health and safety, and protection of animal health and welfare.The food and agriculture industry truly serve an essential
role in this statewide response, and all those who work within that industry
are playing an important part in keeping the state fed, healthy and safe.
“Since Kansas is the fifth largest state in regard to value of agricultural
production, our state’s role in the production of food, fuel and fiber remains
critical for consumers everywhere,” said Secretary of Agriculture Mike Beam.
“KDA is grateful to these dedicated Kansans who are working every day
throughout this crisis and appreciates their commitment.”KDA reminds those food and agriculture businesses that while
they continue to operate, they must — to the extent possible without
significant disruption to essential functions — use telework capabilities to
avoid meeting in person. Any essential functions being performed on-site, or
in-person must — to the extent possible without significant disruption to
essential functions — follow appropriate safety protocols, including
maintaining a six-foot distance between individuals and limiting gatherings to
fewer than 10 people. When not performing an essential function or traveling to
or from work to perform an essential function, individuals must adhere to the
stay home order.In addition, all food and agriculture businesses should
continue to follow all Kansas Department of Health and Environment protocols to
protect the health of their employees: regular handwashing; routine cleaning of
all frequently touched surfaces; adequate supplies of soap and water, hand
sanitizer, cleaning wipes, and tissues; promoting proper coughing and sneezing etiquette;
and especially sending home any employee who is sick or who has been exposed to
COVID-19.All of these efforts are critical to slowing the spread of
the virus and limiting the impact on local healthcare workers and hospitals.
Although many rural areas have not seen the effect of the virus thus far, the
health care system in those rural areas has a more limited capacity and could

were scheduled to come back April 27th, but now we are waiting for
leadership to decide when it is time to return to finish the business of the
Kansas Legislature.&nbsp; While there were
many bills remaining to have a debate and votes taken, I will assume if we
return the focus will be on recovery and moving forward from
Conronovirus/COVID-19.&nbsp; We will be
dealing with a number of economic challenges and at this time we don’t know
where the road to recovery will take us. One thing I do know is the road begins
by supporting our local businesses. These family operations are the ones that
help sponsor the ball teams, buy yearbook ads and support almost any cause of
function that goes on in our communities.&nbsp;
While it is convenient to shop on-line, and some time you have no
choice, but those companies don’t support you and your family like the local
hardware store or restaurant.&nbsp; The last
few weeks, I continue to hear stories of good neighbors being good neighbors
and I am sure that will continue.&nbsp; Be
patient and kind. Wash your hands. Practice social distancing (many farmers and

Body + Soul Day and Wellness Spa is moving to a new location in downtown Hays.

Kiley Rupp, owner, has purchased the former Goodwin Sporting Goods building at 109 E. 11th. The business will move to the new location from 107 W. 15th in early May.

"I really wanted to be closer to downtown, to the heart of downtown was one of my main reasons," Rupp said. "[It will be a] bigger space and more functional."

Rupp said the new space will accommodate her growing business. Rupp, a former manager of the spa, took ownership of the business a year ago in May.

She said the ability to build a space to suit her business's needs and own her own building was appealing.

The former sporting goods store has about&nbsp; 500 more usable square feet than the spa's current location and is allowing the business to add more treatment rooms.

The new space will have four treatment rooms, a couple's room, expanded mani/pedi room, built-in steam shower, multi-use room for groups and wedding parties as well as a separate wing for the med spa.&nbsp;

"I feel this space is better suited for our clients," she said. "The space is designed for more functionality for the clients and has a better use of space. ...

"It just seems more fresh and uplifting," Rupp added.

&nbsp;Stephen Brummer of SJB Designs of Hays designed the project.&nbsp;

The building also has a full basement that can be used for storage.

Rupp said she hopes to eventually add services; however, she did not disclose what those services will be.

Rupp said she is hoping for a grand opening in June.

As a result of the coronavirus outbreak, Body + Soul announced on its Facebook page Sunday that it would be closing the spa to in-person appointments until April 1. 

The business is still selling products.&nbsp;Invoices will be sent via Square and orders must be placed via Facebook messenger, Rupp said via <a href="https://www.facebook.com/bodyandsoulhays/">Facebook</a>.

Body + Soul to open in new downtown Hays location in May

LAWRENCE, Kansas — It’s hard for Meg Heriford to tell people they’re no longer allowed to walk into her restaurant. She runs the <a href="https://www.facebook.com/ladybirdlawrence" target="_blank">Ladybird Diner</a> in downtown Lawrence, one of the first restaurants in town to close when coronavirus cases spiked in the U.S.

After
 one crowded lunch service, Heriford said, she could no longer justify 
the risk to her staff or customers. The restaurant closed March 14, 
though she and a small number of staff haven’t stopped working. The 
Ladybird is offering free bagged lunches for anyone who needs them. 
Heriford buys the food from her usual distributor, prepares it and 
leaves it on carts in front of the restaurant.

“My heart soars 
and breaks, and soars and breaks a thousand times a day,” she said. 
“It’s been really taxing, but also really very clear that this is a 
thing that we should keep doing. Because the need has increased every 
day.”

As local businesses close, companies lay off workers and <a href="https://www.kcur.org/post/these-kansas-counties-are-ordering-residents-stay-home" target="_blank">counties order most people to stay at home</a>,
 some Kansans are taking it into their own hands to help their 
communities. The aid comes in various forms: free meals, providing child
 care for essential workers, delivering groceries to the homebound.

On Facebook, residents in <a href="https://www.facebook.com/lfkmutual/" target="_blank">Lawrence</a>, <a href="https://www.facebook.com/ICTResponse" target="_blank">Wichita</a> and <a href="https://www.facebook.com/groups/283129396002492" target="_blank">Shawnee Mission</a>
 have created pages and groups for people looking for assistance — and 
looking to help others. On Reddit and Nextdoor, people seeking supplies 
get responses offering rolls of toilet paper and bottles of hand 
sanitizer, or tips on where to buy them.

Chandra Di Piazza, a 
teacher in Wichita, said one of those Facebook efforts sprang up for her
 tight-knit neighborhood, Riverside. Since her school closed, she’s been
 working part time from home. So she decided to volunteer to babysit for
 first responders and make deliveries for people who can’t go out.

“I
 was a young single mom, and if I had been in that situation where I had
 to go to work and everything was closed, it would have really hurt me,”
 Di Piazza said. “I have that time to do whatever needs to be done for 
my neighbors.”

Di Piazza is one of about a dozen other people offering help on&nbsp;<a href="https://www.ictresponse.com/" target="_blank">ICT Response</a>, a website started to help Wichita residents through the COVID-19 breakout.

Others are joining groups that existed before the pandemic, like the nonprofit <a href="https://www.facebook.com/BallardCommunityServices" target="_blank">Ballard Center</a> in Lawrence, which distributes groceries to families in need.

On
 a rainy Tuesday morning at the Douglas County Fairgrounds, Rachael 
Shankland, a legal assistant in Lawrence, was one of about 30 
volunteers. She saw on Facebook that the center needed volunteers, and 
she needed something to do, now that her office is closed and Douglas 
County is under a “stay at home” order.

“Seeing how scared 
everybody is just makes you want to make sure everyone doesn’t have to 
worry about little things like food,” she said. “I feel like this is one
 of the essential things that … we’re allowed to be out and doing.”

Usually,
 only about 15 volunteers help with each event, said Marion Belcher, who
 has volunteered to distribute food for the Ballard Center for more than
 12 years. But twice as many people as usual helped unpack food from 
crates and sorted them into bags to give to a line of cars snaking 
through the parking lot.

The number of people in line was 
atypical, too, Belcher said. Usually about 100 families come to the 
bimonthly distribution. He estimated the total number of families 
approached 300 on Tuesday.

“I think it’s the coronavirus: the 
fallout from it, the unemployment, stores closing,” he said. “Things 
that people normally do, they can’t do anymore.”

Kansas saw more than 23,000 people <a href="https://www.kcur.org/post/amid-stay-home-orders-more-68000-people-kansas-and-missouri-file-unemployment#stream/0" target="_blank">file for unemployment last week</a> — more than a 1,000% percent jump. So for families out of work, extra help from their community can make a big difference.

Kristen
 Maxon was one of several people who stopped by the Ladybird Diner at 
lunchtime. She and her partner, who live in Lawrence, have done this a 
few times in the past two weeks.

Maxon’s six children typically 
eat lunch at school, and they can still get free meals even though the 
buildings are closed. But the diner is more convenient.

“I’m so glad that they’re doing this,” Maxon said. “This place is closer, so it’s great.”

Both
 Maxon and her partner have been mostly out of work due to COVID-19. She
 balances a little working from home with homeschooling her kids and 
taking them on walks, all while social distancing.

“I’m glad that
 we’re not at work spreading the virus, but it’s really hard,” Maxon 
said. “My house is in full chaos. It’s hectic.”

Kansans turn to each other for help during coronavirus outbreak 

Local students are among the 21 who will serve as VIP Student Ambassadors for the 2020-2021 academic school year at Fort Hays State University.&nbsp;

Six returning ambassadors will be joined by 15 new ambassadors.&nbsp;

Ambassadors serve as official representatives for FHSU at a variety of special events, including Homecoming, athletic activities, presidential dinners and other gatherings.
