Holy Family Elementary weekly update

DSNWK is hosting the 2020 Esther McMurtrie Memorial Golf Tournament to be held on September 25 at the Ellis Golf Club (1301 Spruce Street, Ellis, Kansas). Registration will begin at 8 a.m. with tee-off beginning at 9 a.m.

The cost of playing in this four person scramble is $300 per team (four person teams). This includes green fees, golf carts, lunch on the course, and flight prizes. There will be additional opportunities to win raffles, prizes, and a golf cart.

You can also participate by making a financial/in-kind donation or by sponsoring a hole on the course. Hole Sponsorship is $300 and includes a sign with your (company) name on the tee box.

 Proceeds will go towards the maintenance and improvement of group homes in Ellis County, greatly benefiting individuals served by DSNWK. We hope you will be able to join&nbsp;us in this year’s tournament

Registration open for Esther McMurtrie Memorial Golf Tournament

The downtown Hays coworking space, BriefSpace, 219 W. 10th, was recently awarded grant funding that will be used to enhance the space for COVID-19 safety and create a better media experience for online facilitation.

"One of the challenges we have had in this pandemic is that, if you have been in BriefSpace you know that it is a very open area," said Doug Williams, Grow Hays executive director.

The open areas currently features tables pushed together and few opportunities to accomplish true social distancing.

"On the main floor where it is just wide open," Williams said. "This grant is going to allow us to put in some separation, some cubicles, and allow for some privacy and separation, for people to come in and work and not have to be right in front of each other, potentially spreading the disease."

The space generally features open architecture, but the inclusion of cubicles will offer patrons a more private space to work, but the common areas will remain offering the ability for patrons to mingle as well.

"I think it will offer the best of both worlds," Williams said. "There is still a lot of open space in there. There will be the capability to interact. We've still got our coffee bar, we've still got an area where we have our phone booths where people can go into if they want to make a private call, but I think it will still be open enough, but eliminate some of these hazardous situations and give a little bit greater level of privacy to some people that need a little bit more of that."

"We are excited about it, we think it is going to be a great addition to our space and a great addition to a facility that really is a community type facility," he said.

Audiovisual upgrades are also planned with the funds.

"And our meeting rooms, while they are large enough to social distance in, and we have good audiovisual accommodations for attending an in-person meeting, we really struggle with external meetings where someone is online," Williams said.

Interactions he said during virtual meetings taking place in the meeting rooms will be significantly upgraded.

"We were fortunate enough to get a grant, which is going to allow us to do a serious upgrade to our audiovisual capabilities in our meeting rooms and allow for remote meetings to be much better than they are now, where people can hear and interact much easier," Williams said.

While the grant will provide upgrades at the facility, it will also allow Brief Space to offer free membership, giving interested parties an opportunity to explore what BriefSpace offers.

"On top of all of that this grant is going to allow us from Sept. 1 to the end of the year to offer membership for free," Williams said. "So anybody that wants to become a member and utilize the space and not have to pay a dime."

Williams said all users, will need to sign up as a community member to take advantage of the free offer, and then details of services can be worked out after signing up.

Grant awarded to upgrade BriefSpace; free memberships offered

What parent does not want the best for their child? All parents also want their children to do well in school. The best time to set a plan in motion is at the beginning of the school year. One of the most important things to do is approach all school work with a positive outlook.&nbsp;

Kathleen A. Olson, Extension educator in family relations from the University of Minnesota suggests setting aside a regular time and place for homework. Help your child with their homework but do not do it for them.&nbsp;

Olson shared these other guidelines for a successful problem-solving approach to school and homework.&nbsp;

It is the parent’s job to help their child develop a system to keep track of assignments and projects. Many schools use an electronic system for parents to track their students’ progress, but don’t forget to look for paper notes and other information that may come home in their backpack. It needs to be checked every day to make sure you don’t miss anything

Don’t forget to recognize your child for work that is well done. Always encourage them and then praise them for papers that are complete and find a place to display work for everyone to see. With a little planning and implementation of some time management tools, you and your child will have a successful school year.

So, you think the already harsh language in this year’s presidential campaign is the worst ever?

Probably not — and additionally, political speech, vulgarities, 
mocking nicknames, claims of incompetence and criminal conduct and a 
host of personal attacks all are protected by the First Amendment’s 
guarantee of freedom of speech.

The high legal bar for public figures to successfully sue for 
defamation, combined with a historical judicial reluctance to intervene 
in political campaigns, allows candidates and their surrogates to sling 
the most vituperative verbal assaults.

Historian Rick Shenkman, author of “Presidential Ambition: Gaining Power at Any Cost,”
 has said, “Our first two elections were pretty clean, but after that 
they became dirty … Even George Washington (who ran unopposed in his 
first election, in 1788) complained he had to endure more attacks than 
Emperor Nero.”

The first real presidential contest, in 1800, produced what many 
historians might rank as number one in personal attacks, as 
then-President John Adams faced off against Vice President Thomas Jefferson.

From the president of Yale University, an Adams supporter, came the warning that if Jefferson won, “We would see our wives and daughters the
 victims of legal prostitution.” A newspaper in Connecticut declared 
that Jefferson would establish a nation where “murder, robbery, rape, 
adultery and incest will openly be taught and practiced.”

In response, Jefferson’s advocates wrote that Adams was a liar, a 
would-be king, repulsive and a “gross hypocrite” who “behaved neither 
like a man nor like a woman but instead possessed a hideous 
hermaphroditical character.”

A cartoon in 1800 shows a kneeling Jefferson about to place the U.S. 
Constitution into a fire built on a pedestal labeled French “despotism,”
 already ablaze with papers labeled as American patriotic essays.

Adams’s son, John Quincy Adams, was both target and 
attacker in the presidential elections of 1824 and 1828 when facing 
Andrew Jackson, who lost to Adams in the first contest and won four 
years later.

<a href="http://millercenter.org/president/jackson/essays/biography/3" target="_blank">“American President: A Reference Resource”</a>
 by the Miller Center at the University of Virginia, notes that in those
 contests, Adams called Jackson a “corruptionist, an aristocrat and a 
budding tyrant in the model of Caesar or Napoleon,” whose election would
 mean the end of the new American nation.

Adams’s opponents spread the unjustified charge that the president 
had arranged a sexual liaison between a young American girl and the 
Russian tsar during Adams’s time as U.S. ambassador to Russia. On the 
lighter side, they also published reports that Adams did not wear 
underwear and went barefoot to church services.

Jackson suffered through attacks in the 1828 election on his wife, 
Rachel, who it was said — apparently with some justification by 
historians — had not yet divorced her first husband before marrying 
Jackson. She died of a heart attack after Election Day but before 
Jackson’s inauguration, and at her funeral, the president-elect blamed 
his campaign opponents for her death. “May God Almighty forgiver her 
murderers, as I know she forgave them,” he said. “I never can.”

While social media may have energized today’s political exchanges — 
for good or bad — use and abuse of new means of communication In the 
presidential election of 1928, eventual winner Herbert Hoover ran against three-term N.Y. Gov. Al Smith,
 the first Catholic to be nominated by either major party. Smith’s 
religion was a major factor in the campaign, just three years after the 
Ku Klux Klan held a major parade in the streets of Washington, D.C.

“News photos” were manipulated and false claims spread that New York 
City’s just-completed Holland Tunnel was in fact a secret passage not to
 New Jersey, but to Vatican City — to be used by the pope, who would 
prompt Smith to take over the United States. In similar fashion, a 
political cartoon titled “Cabinet Meeting — If Al were elected” appeared
 in the “Fellowship Forum,” an official publication of the Klan. It 
shows the pope and other Catholic clergy at a table in the White House, 
with Smith in a servant’s uniform holding a whiskey jug. A news report 
says “more than 100,000 copies were intended to flood” southern states 
days before the election.

(Smith, soundly defeated, had a last laugh: In accounts by both his 
supporters and opponents, who no doubt had differing views on its 
meaning, Smith is said to have sent a one-word telegram to the pope 
after losing: “Unpack.”)

Some political opponents have a much more serious response to what 
they see as scurrilous or defamatory political speech. In 2010, an Iowa 
state senator won a lawsuit and more than $230,000 in damages against 
his opponent over a political ad he said falsely linked him to a company
 alleged to have sold a dangerous drug to children.

But the Iowa Supreme Court overturned the jury verdict, saying “The 
result … is not to imply actual malice cannot exist within the rough and
 tumble Wild West approach to negative commercials that have seemingly 
become standard discourse in many political campaigns. … but the high 
standards established under the First Amendment to permit a free 
exchange of ideas within the same discourse must also be protected.”

President Trump has said multiple times that he 
wants to “open up” libel laws, which could affect future campaigns by 
weakening free speech protections resting on a landmark 1964 U.S. 
Supreme Court decision, New York Times Co. v. Sullivan. It reinforced those protections when public officials (later expanded to include public figures) are involved.

Justice William Brennan wrote that the decision was 
rooted in a “profound national commitment to the principle that debate 
on public issues should be uninhibited, robust and wide open and that it
 may well include vehement, caustic and sometimes unpleasantly sharp 
attacks on government and public officials.”

Whether offended by Trump’s impolitic use of derogatory nicknames for
 his opponents, or by “Saturday Night Live” Trump parodies on TV, that 
commitment to “uninhibited, robust and wide-open” debate on issues and 
even candidate personalities is a hallmark of American democracy — even 
if, at times, we might cringe at how it’s carried out.

Politicians get their say during campaigns. Government stays out of the way. And we get to respond at the ballot box.

After the cancellation of a scrimmage and parents meeting night Friday, the Hays High School football team has now canceled practice Monday and Tuesday after a player tested positive for COVID-19.

The announcement comes days before the anticipated start of classes for Hays USD 489 next week.

The player has been asked to isolate.&nbsp;

The player informed the head coach on Aug. 22, according to a message sent to parents Saturday evening. The positive case was at the first practice on Aug. 17 and the second on Aug. 18.&nbsp;

The player has not attended practice since Aug. 18, the district said.

"After weighing the details, the HHS football team will not practice Monday, August 24th, or Tuesday, August 25th, to allow KDHE enough time for contact tracing," the message to parents read.

At 4:11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 22 the Hays Police Department received a 911 call about a disturbance in the 200 block of West 15th Street. 

 Upon officers arrival they learned that a 22-year-old man later identified as John Jones had broken into a residence of a female acquaintance while brandishing a knife.  

Jones reportedly attacked a 21-year-old male and the 21-year-old female acquaintance inside the residence. 

 The male victim grabbed a knife and defended the occupants of the home. 

 During the attack, the 21-year-old male and female sustained non-life threatening injuries.

  Jones sustained injuries to his face and a large cut to his lower leg. 

 Hays Police Officer Mason Seery placed a tourniquet onto Jones’s leg to aid in stopping the bleeding.  

Jones was transported to the hospital for treatment. 

This investigation continues and there is no further danger to the community. 

 John Jones has been arrested for attempted murder and is considered innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

HPD investigating early morning stabbing

Two friends are specializing in the art of showroom clean with their new detailing shop in Hays, Hays Auto Spa.&nbsp;

Jordan&nbsp; Mayfield and Dakota Sproul, both 23, openned the business at 1303 Golden Belt Drive four weeks ago.

"We've had pretty good business for just opening up," Mayfield said.

Mayfield has four years of experience in detailing. Sproul, who races in his spare time, also has an automotive background.&nbsp;

The two young men met through their girlfriends, who are sisters. Despite uncertain economic times, the duo decided to strike out on their own and start their own business.

Mayfield said the freedom of being his own boss drew him to partner with Sproul and open the business.

"[I wanted to] do things like I like to do them." he said.

Sproul said he liked the flexibility self-employment offered.

Hays Auto Spa offers full auto detailing services, both inside and out. They can wash, wax and clean wheels. Interior services include touch ups on all the plastics and leather.&nbsp;

"I think we do really good work in a timely manner," Mayfield said.

He said the duo takes great pride in their work, putting the same effort into customers' cars as they would on their own.

He described car detailing as a precise art.

"We want your car to look like it just rolled off the showroom floor, or even cleaner like some people say," Mayfield said. "We have detailed some cars that people say it looks better than when they bought it. That's our goal every time you bring your vehicle in."

The detail service offers steam disinfecting, which can get into cracks and crevices other means of disinfecting can't, Mayfield said.&nbsp;

"There are so many things you touch [in a vehicle]. You just don't know what could be lingering inside your vehicle," Mayfield said.

The partners also have an industrial shampooer they can use on either vehicle upholstery and carpets or home carpets.&nbsp;

The business is open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Mondays through Fridays.&nbsp; Appointments are recommended, but the business will accept walk-ins contingent on availability.

Car interiors or exteriors runs $65. Small SUVs and trucks are $75 for an interior or exterior. Large trucks, SUVs or mini-vans cost $90 for an interior or exterior. Extra fees apply for jobs that will need extra time, such as excessive dirt, trash or pet hair.&nbsp;

The business also offers add-ons, such as the shampoo service or engine-bay detailing.&nbsp;Headlight restorations are offered for $80 to $100.

Home carpet shampooing starts at $100 and then the charge is 30 to 35 cents per square foot.

Hays Auto Spa specializes in the art of showroom clean

&nbsp;A total of 2,395 students completed associate, bachelor’s or graduate degrees at Fort Hays State University in the spring 2020 semester.
