After two positive tests last week, there are now confirmed cases of COVID-19 in all 105 Kansas counties.&nbsp;

The northwest Kansas counties of Rawlins and Wallace were the last two counties to report confirmed cases of coronavirus.

Rawlins County announced its first case Tuesday, while Wallace County announced a positive case on Thursday.

Downtown Hays coffee shop temporarily closes

KANORADO - With traffic constantly passing behind him on Interstate 70 near Kanorado Thursday, Sen. Rick Billinger, R-Goodland, talked about the 50th anniversary of the completion of I-70 in Kansas.&nbsp;

"I-70 is our connection to the world," Billinger told the audience gathered at the Kanorado weigh station. "It's an economic lifeline for Kansas."

 Thursday's celebration near the Kansas/Colorado state line included the unveiling of a replica of signs located on eastbound I-70 highlighting the&nbsp;June 17, 1970 completion.

"I remember as a kid when they started the construction and they put the overpass over the interstate there in&nbsp; Park," he said.

As his family drove on completed sections of the new road, "all of a sudden we'd be back on two-lane, switch back and forth," Billinger recalled.

"I know how appreciative everyone was when the final piece of I-70 (in Kansas) was completed and opened up."

Kansas opened the first section of interstate in the nation on I-70 just west of Topeka on November 14, 1956.

The interstate system was created when the Federal-Aid Highway Act was signed by President Dwight D.&nbsp;Eisenhower, an Abilene native and former World War II general, on June 29, 1956.&nbsp;&nbsp;

His youngest granddaughter, Mary Eisenhower, 64, also attended the ceremony.

Eisenhower joked about the fact that her famous grandfather had a pilot's license, but no driver's license until he left the presidency in 1961 and retired to his farm outside Gettysburg, Penn.

"As a military man he didn't need it and as president he had Secret Service," Eisenhower explained.

The former president eventually did get his driver's license and a car, "but unfortunately, there was still a little bit of military lead left in his foot."

Eisenhower was stopped for speeding numerous times by the Gettysburg police but was as a well-known citizen was given just a warning, his granddaughter said.&nbsp;

"Finally, I remember, the chief of police came to the farm one day for a little visit.&nbsp;

"He and Granddad had a Coke, sat down and chatted. The conclusion of this conversation was that Granddad needed to find a different hobby," Eisenhower said with a smile.

Eisenhower grew up on her grandfather's estate in Pennsylvania which is now designated as&nbsp;Eisenhower National Historic Site.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Kansas has a total of 875 miles of interstate, which carries 24.6% of all travel in the state.

Interstate 70 stretches a total of&nbsp;2,151 miles between Maryland and Utah.

Also attending the event were Kansas Transportation Secretary Julie Lorenz and Kansas Department of Wildlife, Parks and Tourism Secretary Brad Loveless.

🎥 Billinger remembers I-70 construction 50 years after completion

WICHITA — Some students at public universities in Kansas have, or will yet get, the coronavirus.

Football
 players training over the summer have tested positive. A frat house in 
Manhattan has an outbreak. And some dorm students elsewhere in the state
 have gone from just-unpacked to quarantined.

Schools
 spent the summer preparing. Desks have been moved six feet apart. 
In-person classes are getting cut back. Masks must be worn.

But 
universities know they can’t keep the virus completely off campus. 
Instead they hope to slow the spread. Here’s what happens when a Kansas 
student comes down with COVID-19 symptoms and what information public 
colleges in the state will — and won’t — share.

For
 university students, getting tested is as simple as stopping by the 
school’s health center — just make sure to call ahead first. Centers 
want time to don their protective equipment, but they expect to get 
students in same-day.

Before testing, universities screen 
students for other potential causes of their symptoms. Emporia State 
University says most of the students it’s seen asking for tests at its 
wellness center had nothing more than a common illness like strep 
throat.

“We get so focused on all COVID all the time and, what do
 you know, strep throat still happens,” said Mary McDaniel Anschutz, the
 director of Emporia State’s wellness center.

The universities 
promise a much faster turnaround time than the five-to-seven-days wait 
time off campus. Kansas State University and Emporia State have antigen 
tests, which produces results in twenty minutes. But because those are 
more likely to produce false positives, universities are also partnering
 with labs for other tests to get results between one and three days.

Depending
 on which school a student goes to, they have already been tested before
 they got to campus. Pittsburg State University required athletes and 
students moving on campus to get tested — as of Tuesday, 15 of 756 
tested students were positive for the virus. The University of Kansas 
requires testing for students living off campus, too.

Other 
schools did not require testing before classes started because the 
Centers for Disease Control and Prevention does not recommend entry 
testing.

Students who test 
positive are required to quarantine. Some universities have set aside 
special dorms and floors for infected students to stay on campus. Fort 
Hays State University has both dorms and hotel rooms set aside. 
Pittsburg State students living on campus will be quarantined at a spot 
in the city off campus.

“We’re following up personally every 
single day with every student who’s isolated or quarantined,” said 
Pittsburg State spokeswoman Abigail Fern.

And if your roommate gets a positive test, you’ll also be isolated in a separate living area, even if you don’t have symptoms.

Wichita
 State does not provide separate housing for students who test positive.
 Instead, the students are expected to stay in their dorms and limit 
their use of common spaces.

Schools
 are mostly hands-off when it comes to contact tracing. That 
responsibility falls on public health departments — assuming they get 
the infected student’s permission first.

A recently passed Kansas law lets people opt out of contact tracing.

Even
 if the students agree, their classmates are unlikely to find out 
someone in their class tested positive. Universities said that’s because
 sharing a class doesn’t count as close contact, defined as being within
 six feet for more than 10 minutes. The schools are keeping students 
seated six feet apart.

Universities are still deciding if they’ll
 publicly release the number of coronavirus cases on campus and how 
often. K-State says it’s working on a website but doesn’t know how often
 it’ll be updated. Fort Hays says it’s compiling daily internal reports 
on case numbers, but is still figuring out what it will share.

Wichita
 State does not currently plan on releasing case numbers for its campus.
 The school says because so many of its students are commuters, the 
Sedgwick County infection data will reveal more about the campus 
community than positive cases found on campus.

“We’re smack in 
the middle of Wichita,” said Camille Childers, the director of Wichita 
State’s student health services. “The Sedgwick County data is more 
reflective of us.”

will take place in the 2300 block of 280th Avenue. This is located between Severin Road
and St. John-St. Andrew Road. 

This 1-mile stretch will be closed to through traffic beginning at
9 a.m. on Monday and will remain closed until the project is completed.
The expected completion date will be Sept. 3, pending weather conditions.


Motorists traveling in the affected closure area should use alternate routes of travel until the

Three-day weather outlook

I have to admit, I deserve to get beat up. I have brought this on myself. All of the warnings were there and I just ignored them. I knew a long time ago I needed to do something—or I would get beat up.

The beating has left me sore in my neck and my shoulders. My hands hurt. When I went to church Sunday morning, I had no idea that there were so many stairs, as every muscle in my legs hurt and my knees were screaming at me.&nbsp;

I spent this last winter doing very little, other than an occasional workout. I knew that by June 20th, I needed to be ready—but I delayed and waited.&nbsp;

Finally, Saturday, April 25th, I got back on my bicycle to get ready for a bicycle trip beginning June 20th. It felt great to get out and ride. Though it was windy, I pushed on—riding just over 15 short miles.&nbsp;

That evening, in the middle of the night, I woke up hurting everywhere, convinced that someone had snuck into my room and beat me with a baseball bat. I looked over at my wife, Barbara, but she was asleep. I ruled her out.&nbsp;

Sometimes, I have families come into my office seeking help. One family recently had been to two of my workshops (as well as a workshop of an estate/trust planning attorney) and had even visited with my staff on the phone.&nbsp;

Now they were here, some three years later, both elderly, and wanting to preserve assets in light of a new illness one of them had.

I will be able to help them, but unfortunately, it will not work the same as if they had come to me before the illness—if they had come to me three years ago. Now our opportunities are more limited. The plan is more complicated, more costly and will have a less favorable result—but it is the best that we can do.&nbsp;

After a two and a half hour meeting, I am sure they felt beat up. In fact, I stopped the meeting so that we could get together again and finish the planning—at a time that they were not so beat up.&nbsp;

One of the most disappointing parts of my practice is when someone comes in to see me, I lay out a plan for them, and they decide not to do anything. I always wonder what I could have done differently. I always feel like I have let them down by not convincing them. I have to admit, it wakes me up at night.

I know that if I keep plugging away at riding my bicycle, the soreness will leave me, and then eventually riding will become enjoyable again. If I keep plugging away, I will be ready for my bicycle trip on June 20th. If I falter, the June 20th trip is going to be very, very difficult.&nbsp;

I know that the family that recently came to see me will one day enjoy peace of mind- they just need to let me help them “train” them—just as I am trying to train myself on my bicycle.

Please, please do not wait. If you are facing a chronic illness or want to get a plan in place as not to lose everything, DO SOMETHING NOW.&nbsp;

As with bike riding, the longer the wait, the harder it is going to be to get a plan in place—in fact, one day it may be too late.

When I went to church Sunday morning, I had no idea that there were so many stairs, as every muscle in my legs hurt and my knees were screaming at me.&nbsp;Yes, I got beat up.I spent this last winter doing very little, other than an occasional workout. I knew that by June 20th, I needed to be ready—but I delayed and waited.&nbsp;Finally, Saturday, April 25th, I got back on my bicycle to get ready for a bicycle trip beginning June 20th. It felt great to get out and ride. Though it was windy, I pushed on—riding just over 15 short miles.&nbsp;That evening, in the middle of the night, I woke up hurting everywhere, convinced that someone had snuck into my room and beat me with a baseball bat. I looked over at my wife, Barbara, but she was asleep. I ruled her out.&nbsp;Sometimes, I have families come into my office seeking help. One family recently had been to two of my workshops (as well as a workshop of an estate/trust planning attorney) and had even visited with my staff on the phone.&nbsp;Now they were here, some three years later, both elderly, and wanting to preserve assets in light of a new illness one of them had.I will be able to help them, but unfortunately, it will not work the same as if they had come to me before the illness—if they had come to me three years ago. Now our opportunities are more limited. The plan is more complicated, more costly and will have a less favorable result—but it is the best that we can do.&nbsp;After a two and a half hour meeting, I am sure they felt beat up. In fact, I stopped the meeting so that we could get together again and finish the planning—at a time that they were not so beat up.&nbsp;One of the most disappointing parts of my practice is when someone comes in to see me, I lay out a plan for them, and they decide not to do anything. I always wonder what I could have done differently. I always feel like I have let them down by not convincing them. I have to admit, it wakes me up at night.I know that if I keep plugging away at riding my bicycle, the soreness will leave me, and then eventually riding will become enjoyable again. If I keep plugging away, I will be ready for my bicycle trip on June 20th. If I falter, the June 20th trip is going to be very, very difficult.&nbsp;I know that the family that recently came to see me will one day enjoy peace of mind- they just need to let me help them “train” them—just as I am trying to train myself on my bicycle.Please, please do not wait. CLINKSCALES: 'Getting beat up'

The Fort Hays State University Stripes for Hope student organization made a significant donation to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital this summer.

St. Jude, a non-profit organization based in Memphis, Tenn., performs research about and provides treatment for children who have been diagnosed with severe illnesses. All care from St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital is provided to children free of charge.

FHSU Stripes for Hope donated $3,500&nbsp;to the&nbsp;American Lebanese Syrian Associated Charities, the fundraising organization for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. They made the donation after a series of fundraising activities and events, such as the sale of T-shirts during a “No More Cancer” rally.

Dr. Christopher Olds, faculty advisor for Stripes for Hope, said the efforts of FHSU Stripes for Hope represent the civic-minded nature of FHSU students.

“Fort Hays State University students both on-campus and online have a passion for helping others and consistently make an effort to assist individuals who are in need,” Olds said.

He credits, in particular, the efforts of students Itzel Muñoz and Evelyn Irigoyen-Aguirre for coordinating fundraising efforts that made the contribution to St. Jude possible.

Hansen Community Grant Fund, which offers financial support to qualifying and deserving projects and programs in Northwest Kansas.&nbsp;Grant funds supported the following organization and project:

The funds will be applied to matching grant funding as well as existing Norton County Museum operating budget funding to replace and upgrade the 64 windows of the Museum. The current windows are original to the 82-year old building, are single pane/energy inefficient, and allow damaging UV to enter the building, causing negative impact to UV-sensitive historical artifacts. Additionally, the aged windows require frequent and expensive upkeep. “This investment would drastically cut future upkeep costs while providing significant energy savings because the window surface area is such a large percentage of the overall building wall area,” said Mike Posson, Executive Director of Norton City/County Economic Development and&nbsp;Norton County Historical Society/Museum Board Member.

“The Museum building is part of our historic district and helps share the stories of past generations of Norton County,” said Tara Vance, NCCF Executive Director. “NCCF is proud to support this project to ensure the longevity of the building and its contents.”

Norton Co. foundation awards $5,000 in July grant cycle

SALINA – The Catholic diocese of Salina is
pleased to announce Megan Robl as the new executive director for Catholic
Charities of Northern Kansas. 

Robl is a Salina native and a parishioner of St.
Elizabeth Ann Seton.

 She graduated from Kansas State University with a Bachelor
of Science in mass communications and minors in business and dance. Robl was
previously the director of marketing and communications for the Greater Salina
Community Foundation. 

“Catholic Charities has always held a special place in my
heart, and I am deeply grateful for the opportunity to be part of this amazing
organization. I am so excited to work with the board, staff and community
partners as we continue to provide vital services to those in need throughout
the diocese,” said Robl.

DSNWK is hosting the 2020 Esther McMurtrie Memorial Golf Tournament to be held on September 25 at the Ellis Golf Club (1301 Spruce Street, Ellis, Kansas). Registration will begin at 8 a.m. with tee-off beginning at 9 a.m.

Holy Family Elementary weekly update

The downtown Hays coworking space, BriefSpace, 219 W. 10th, was recently awarded grant funding that will be used to enhance the space for COVID-19 safety and create a better media experience for online facilitation.

"One of the challenges we have had in this pandemic is that, if you have been in BriefSpace you know that it is a very open area," said Doug Williams, Grow Hays executive director.

The open areas currently features tables pushed together and few opportunities to accomplish true social distancing.

"On the main floor where it is just wide open," Williams said. "This grant is going to allow us to put in some separation, some cubicles, and allow for some privacy and separation, for people to come in and work and not have to be right in front of each other, potentially spreading the disease."

The space generally features open architecture, but the inclusion of cubicles will offer patrons a more private space to work, but the common areas will remain offering the ability for patrons to mingle as well.

"I think it will offer the best of both worlds," Williams said. "There is still a lot of open space in there. There will be the capability to interact. We've still got our coffee bar, we've still got an area where we have our phone booths where people can go into if they want to make a private call, but I think it will still be open enough, but eliminate some of these hazardous situations and give a little bit greater level of privacy to some people that need a little bit more of that."

"We are excited about it, we think it is going to be a great addition to our space and a great addition to a facility that really is a community type facility," he said.

Audiovisual upgrades are also planned with the funds.

"And our meeting rooms, while they are large enough to social distance in, and we have good audiovisual accommodations for attending an in-person meeting, we really struggle with external meetings where someone is online," Williams said.

Interactions he said during virtual meetings taking place in the meeting rooms will be significantly upgraded.

"We were fortunate enough to get a grant, which is going to allow us to do a serious upgrade to our audiovisual capabilities in our meeting rooms and allow for remote meetings to be much better than they are now, where people can hear and interact much easier," Williams said.

While the grant will provide upgrades at the facility, it will also allow Brief Space to offer free membership, giving interested parties an opportunity to explore what BriefSpace offers.

"On top of all of that this grant is going to allow us from Sept. 1 to the end of the year to offer membership for free," Williams said. "So anybody that wants to become a member and utilize the space and not have to pay a dime."

Williams said all users, will need to sign up as a community member to take advantage of the free offer, and then details of services can be worked out after signing up.

Grant awarded to upgrade BriefSpace; free memberships offered

What parent does not want the best for their child? All parents also want their children to do well in school. The best time to set a plan in motion is at the beginning of the school year. One of the most important things to do is approach all school work with a positive outlook.&nbsp;

Kathleen A. Olson, Extension educator in family relations from the University of Minnesota suggests setting aside a regular time and place for homework. Help your child with their homework but do not do it for them.&nbsp;

Olson shared these other guidelines for a successful problem-solving approach to school and homework.&nbsp;

It is the parent’s job to help their child develop a system to keep track of assignments and projects. Many schools use an electronic system for parents to track their students’ progress, but don’t forget to look for paper notes and other information that may come home in their backpack. It needs to be checked every day to make sure you don’t miss anything

Don’t forget to recognize your child for work that is well done. Always encourage them and then praise them for papers that are complete and find a place to display work for everyone to see. With a little planning and implementation of some time management tools, you and your child will have a successful school year.

 </figure>What parent does not want the best for their child? All parents also want their children to do well in school. The best time to set a plan in motion is at the beginning of the school year. One of the most important things to do is approach all school work with a positive outlook.&nbsp;Kathleen A. Olson, Extension educator in family relations from the University of Minnesota suggests setting aside a regular time and place for homework. Help your child with their homework but do not do it for them.&nbsp;Olson shared these other guidelines for a successful problem-solving approach to school and homework.&nbsp;<ol>
 <li>Set an example by working on something of your own during the time set aside for homework. Encourage them to ask questions and even think out loud to help them solve a problem. It is important that your child knows that you are available for them.&nbsp;</li><li>Ask your child questions about his homework. Perhaps they could do a problem for you or describe what they’ve been reading. Then, when your child needs help, your goal should be to help them do it themselves. Help them find information. Ask lots of questions. Don’t be afraid to say, "I don’t know." Remember: you’re a guide and a support to your child.</li><li>An assignment may be overwhelming to your child. Help your child break the assignment down and help him identify the steps needed to complete the homework.</li><li>Assist your child with technology. If you have access to a computer, work together so you know what they are doing.&nbsp;</li><li>If you can’t physically be available, you can still set aside a time and place and check on their homework when you get a chance.</li><li>Encourage children to think of their homework as their job. The biggest part of the job is to learn.</li>
 </ol>It is the parent’s job to help their child develop a system to keep track of assignments and projects. Many schools use an electronic system for parents to track their students’ progress, but don’t forget to look for paper notes and other information that may come home in their backpack. It needs to be checked every day to make sure you don’t miss anythingDon’t forget to recognize your child for work that is well done. Always encourage them and then praise them for papers that are complete and find a place to display work for everyone to see. With a little planning and implementation of some time management tools, you and your child will have a successful school year. So, you think the already harsh language in this year’s presidential campaign is the worst ever?

Probably not — and additionally, political speech, vulgarities, 
mocking nicknames, claims of incompetence and criminal conduct and a 
host of personal attacks all are protected by the First Amendment’s 
guarantee of freedom of speech.

The high legal bar for public figures to successfully sue for 
defamation, combined with a historical judicial reluctance to intervene 
in political campaigns, allows candidates and their surrogates to sling 
the most vituperative verbal assaults.

Historian Rick Shenkman, author of “Presidential Ambition: Gaining Power at Any Cost,”
 has said, “Our first two elections were pretty clean, but after that 
they became dirty … Even George Washington (who ran unopposed in his 
first election, in 1788) complained he had to endure more attacks than 
Emperor Nero.”

The first real presidential contest, in 1800, produced what many 
historians might rank as number one in personal attacks, as 
then-President John Adams faced off against Vice President Thomas Jefferson.

From the president of Yale University, an Adams supporter, came the warning that if Jefferson won, “We would see our wives and daughters the
 victims of legal prostitution.” A newspaper in Connecticut declared 
that Jefferson would establish a nation where “murder, robbery, rape, 
adultery and incest will openly be taught and practiced.”

In response, Jefferson’s advocates wrote that Adams was a liar, a 
would-be king, repulsive and a “gross hypocrite” who “behaved neither 
like a man nor like a woman but instead possessed a hideous 
hermaphroditical character.”

A cartoon in 1800 shows a kneeling Jefferson about to place the U.S. 
Constitution into a fire built on a pedestal labeled French “despotism,”
 already ablaze with papers labeled as American patriotic essays.

Adams’s son, John Quincy Adams, was both target and 
attacker in the presidential elections of 1824 and 1828 when facing 
Andrew Jackson, who lost to Adams in the first contest and won four 
years later.

<a href="http://millercenter.org/president/jackson/essays/biography/3" target="_blank">“American President: A Reference Resource”</a>
 by the Miller Center at the University of Virginia, notes that in those
 contests, Adams called Jackson a “corruptionist, an aristocrat and a 
budding tyrant in the model of Caesar or Napoleon,” whose election would
 mean the end of the new American nation.

Adams’s opponents spread the unjustified charge that the president 
had arranged a sexual liaison between a young American girl and the 
Russian tsar during Adams’s time as U.S. ambassador to Russia. On the 
lighter side, they also published reports that Adams did not wear 
underwear and went barefoot to church services.

Jackson suffered through attacks in the 1828 election on his wife, 
Rachel, who it was said — apparently with some justification by 
historians — had not yet divorced her first husband before marrying 
Jackson. She died of a heart attack after Election Day but before 
Jackson’s inauguration, and at her funeral, the president-elect blamed 
his campaign opponents for her death. “May God Almighty forgiver her 
murderers, as I know she forgave them,” he said. “I never can.”

While social media may have energized today’s political exchanges — 
for good or bad — use and abuse of new means of communication In the 
presidential election of 1928, eventual winner Herbert Hoover ran against three-term N.Y. Gov. Al Smith,
 the first Catholic to be nominated by either major party. Smith’s 
religion was a major factor in the campaign, just three years after the 
Ku Klux Klan held a major parade in the streets of Washington, D.C.

“News photos” were manipulated and false claims spread that New York 
City’s just-completed Holland Tunnel was in fact a secret passage not to
 New Jersey, but to Vatican City — to be used by the pope, who would 
prompt Smith to take over the United States. In similar fashion, a 
political cartoon titled “Cabinet Meeting — If Al were elected” appeared
 in the “Fellowship Forum,” an official publication of the Klan. It 
shows the pope and other Catholic clergy at a table in the White House, 
with Smith in a servant’s uniform holding a whiskey jug. A news report 
says “more than 100,000 copies were intended to flood” southern states 
days before the election.

(Smith, soundly defeated, had a last laugh: In accounts by both his 
supporters and opponents, who no doubt had differing views on its 
meaning, Smith is said to have sent a one-word telegram to the pope 
after losing: “Unpack.”)

Some political opponents have a much more serious response to what 
they see as scurrilous or defamatory political speech. In 2010, an Iowa 
state senator won a lawsuit and more than $230,000 in damages against 
his opponent over a political ad he said falsely linked him to a company
 alleged to have sold a dangerous drug to children.

But the Iowa Supreme Court overturned the jury verdict, saying “The 
result … is not to imply actual malice cannot exist within the rough and
 tumble Wild West approach to negative commercials that have seemingly 
become standard discourse in many political campaigns. … but the high 
standards established under the First Amendment to permit a free 
exchange of ideas within the same discourse must also be protected.”

President Trump has said multiple times that he 
wants to “open up” libel laws, which could affect future campaigns by 
weakening free speech protections resting on a landmark 1964 U.S. 
Supreme Court decision, New York Times Co. v. Sullivan. It reinforced those protections when public officials (later expanded to include public figures) are involved.

Justice William Brennan wrote that the decision was 
rooted in a “profound national commitment to the principle that debate 
on public issues should be uninhibited, robust and wide open and that it
 may well include vehement, caustic and sometimes unpleasantly sharp 
attacks on government and public officials.”

Whether offended by Trump’s impolitic use of derogatory nicknames for
 his opponents, or by “Saturday Night Live” Trump parodies on TV, that 
commitment to “uninhibited, robust and wide-open” debate on issues and 
even candidate personalities is a hallmark of American democracy — even 
if, at times, we might cringe at how it’s carried out.

Politicians get their say during campaigns. Government stays out of the way. And we get to respond at the ballot box.

After the cancellation of a scrimmage and parents meeting night Friday, the Hays High School football team has now canceled practice Monday and Tuesday after a player tested positive for COVID-19.

The announcement comes days before the anticipated start of classes for Hays USD 489 next week.

The player has been asked to isolate.&nbsp;

The player informed the head coach on Aug. 22, according to a message sent to parents Saturday evening. The positive case was at the first practice on Aug. 17 and the second on Aug. 18.&nbsp;

The player has not attended practice since Aug. 18, the district said.

"After weighing the details, the HHS football team will not practice Monday, August 24th, or Tuesday, August 25th, to allow KDHE enough time for contact tracing," the message to parents read.

🎙 Post Podcast: New DHDC events scheduled after Brews on the Bricks cancelled

At 4:11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 22 the Hays Police Department received a 911 call about a disturbance in the 200 block of West 15th Street. 

 Upon officers arrival they learned that a 22-year-old man later identified as John Jones had broken into a residence of a female acquaintance while brandishing a knife.  

Jones reportedly attacked a 21-year-old male and the 21-year-old female acquaintance inside the residence. 

 The male victim grabbed a knife and defended the occupants of the home. 

 During the attack, the 21-year-old male and female sustained non-life threatening injuries.

  Jones sustained injuries to his face and a large cut to his lower leg. 

 Hays Police Officer Mason Seery placed a tourniquet onto Jones’s leg to aid in stopping the bleeding.
