Taxpayers who didn’t save a copy of their prior year’s tax return, but now need it, have a few options to get the information. Individuals should generally keep copies of their tax returns and any documents for at least three years after they file.

ELLIS — Following major work to the Ellis Railroad Museum that revitalized the grounds — including the construction of a new home for a one-third scale replica of a GM Aerotrain — excitement is growing as the museum approaches opening day for the season.

<a href="https://hayspost.com/posts/43961af5-98c5-41fe-980d-1b731a33083c">"After the miniature train was derailed and vandalized, the Community Foundation of Ellis partnered with the Ellis Railroad Museum to restore the miniature train and build a proper storage garage for the train and making $250,000 in improvements to the Railroad park," said Sophia Henrickson, Ellis Alliance executive director.</a>

Those improvements have been completed and there are now plans to run the train during museum hours.

“After waiting over a year for the miniature train to complete its repairs and working through some of the mechanical kinks during the test runs after the restoration process, we are excited to have the train ready to go this tourist season when the museum opens April 1,” she said.

But before that can happen a less noticeable, yet vital part of the train's operation remains in need of repair.

The tracks that carry the popular attraction have become dilapidated over years of use and will need to be repaired in order for the restored train to run its 3/4-mile route.

So community leaders are asking the public for help finding the tools needed to make the repairs.

Henrickson said tool donations can be made at two locations.

Ellis Railroad Museum seeks tool donations for track repairs

A perfect spring day has a bright blue sky, just the right amount of heat, a light breeze and an almost unnoticeable humidity. It’s always a welcome sight after winter, but especially after Mother Nature treats everyone to two weeks of below-freezing temperatures. All of that is on top of months of pandemic-induced cabin fever.

Yes, it’s safe to say I’m ready for spring for all the usual reasons: green grass, blooming flowers and trees, longer days and anticipation of summer. But this year the normal sense of renewal that comes with a dose of spring is heightened by the widespread distribution of vaccines that will let us return to living our lives in a more normal fashion.

At this point, all of this will happen sooner rather than later. Somethings are never going back the way they were before. That’s good for some things, like remote work or more people buying their food directly from farmers and ranchers. These are the benefits that will stay with us long after everyone has had their chance to get a shot.

For everything else to return, however, getting needles in every willing arm as fast as possible is the ticket back to the good life. I understand why some people are wary of taking one of these shots. Two of the three vaccines are based on a relatively new technology, and they were developed four times faster than any previous inoculation.

Again, I understand wanting to be cautious, but I believe the rapid development of these vaccines is an achievement to be celebrated. A combination of government incentives and private enterprise combined to deliver doses of a safe and effective antidote to a modern-day plague in less than a year.

It will take more time to see the full benefits of these vaccines, but early results in reducing the risk of death and hospitalizations are encouraging. Anecdotal reports from friends and family who’ve received their shots have also been positive. This is a revolutionary development in humans’ fight against disease.

That message has been somewhat muddled because caution and mitigation efforts are still necessary. Vaccine supply constraints and the lead time needed before they’re fully effective require continued vigilance. But production is ramping up, and so is the pace of doses going into arms. But with each passing day we’re getting closer to reaching critical mass, closer to the end of this pandemic.

Closer to hearing the hum of a crowded restaurant on a Friday night. Closer to watching the latest movie in a theater. Closer to boarding airplanes and collecting passport stamps. Closer to concerts, sporting events and celebrations disrupted over the past year.

Just as a good dose of spring makes us quickly forget the chill of winter, a shot or two this season will get us to the other side of the pandemic by summer. And I expect it will be as glorious as feeling a shot of sunshine during a perfect spring day.

Kansas Farm Bureau Insight: Shots of spring

It was just a few months ago when I wondered if Fort Hays State University Tiger athletics would happen at all during the 2020-21 season. However, not only did our student-athletes take the field, they did so in a safe, winning fashion. Although the fall sports were delayed, all of our student-athletes have a chance to compete this semester. Competition, at least safe competition, would not be possible without the guidance and the hard work of some key individuals – those who comprise the team behind the teams. This includes, among many others, our team doctor, athletic trainers, coaches, facilities staff, and of course, the student-athletes themselves.

Since the fall semester, our team administered more than 1,300 COVID-19 tests for athletes alone. Only 1.3 percent of these tests were positive. Thus far, during the second semester, our test results have been below 1 percent positive. From Feb. 22 through the end of the semester, we project another 2,200 tests of athletes, coaches, trainers, and team managers.

Spring testing protocols include requiring members of the men’s and women’s basketball, men’s and women’s indoor track and field, and wrestling teams to test their entire rosters weekly. The “travel party” that accompanies our teams is also tested the week of their scheduled departure. High-risk sports, such as football and volleyball, also test their entire rosters during the week of competition. Medium-risk sports, such as soccer, baseball, and softball, test entire rosters when traveling and utilize surveillance testing when not traveling. Low-risk sports, such as track and field, golf, and tennis, test the entire roster prior to traveling.&nbsp;

The testing protocols, when warranted, are followed by contact tracing, isolation, and quarantine. Testing is supplemented with numerous cleaning protocols, training and practice protocols, and a lot of open and regular communication with many partners. Our partners include FHSU student health, Ellis County Health, the athletic and medical staff of our rival universities, and MIAA and NCAA personnel.

Leading our team behind the teams is the truly remarkable Dr. Wally Wallstrom (Doc Wally), who works with the university through a cooperative agreement with Hays Medical Center. While we have always been grateful for the time and expertise of Doc Wally, his ongoing leadership and recommendations have clearly been the driving force behind our successful winter and spring seasons. Clearly, Doc Wally’s oversight is the reason we have the privilege to gather in the name of Tiger athletics.

“I can’t say enough about Doc Wally’s guidance throughout this process,” said Curtis Hammeke, FHSU athletics director. “We have turned to him repeatedly since last spring. He has consulted with Jason Kennedy, the Ellis County health director, and created protocols for us to follow from the weight room last summer, throughout the fall, and into the competitive winter seasons. He has made himself available on a regular basis to address issues in a timely fashion. We have always appreciated all he does for our athletes as our team doctor, but I don’t know how we would have navigated these challenges without him.”

Hammeke also noted that he is equally grateful for the tremendous effort the FHSU athletic training staff and Student Health have made to keep our athletes competing this spring. They have done everything from 5 a.m. daily health screenings of our student-athletes to supporting our coaching staff in maintaining appropriate protocols.

“While the entire athletic training staff has gone well above and beyond their normal responsibilities, associate athletic trainer Dustin Bradstreet has taken the lead on organizing and implementing the weekly testing,” Hammeke said. “Dustin has been unwavering in his commitment to the safety of our student-athletes and coaching staff. He has willingly taken on a considerable amount of responsibility with great professionalism and ethics. He is a great example of those throughout the country who have stepped forward to address these challenges head on.”&nbsp;

There are so many who deserve a spotlight in this article – too many to mention – but let me add just a couple more statements of praise through the eyes of our student-athletes.

“It’s definitely been good to get a full season in,” said Jared Vitztum, the leading scorer and rebounder for the Tiger men’s basketball team. “I attribute the success of our testing program to our training staff and the MIAA protocols. Dustin Bradstreet, our trainer, has been a big part of the success,” added Vitztum, a graduate student from Hays. “He is the one making sure we are wearing masks on trips, really keeping us tidy with the rules to follow on and off the court, and obviously all the coaches do their part as well.”

Whitney Randall of the Tiger women’s basketball squad agrees. “Our athletic trainers have been really great during the testing process,” said Randall, a senior from Alva, Okla. “I’m grateful for Carlee Lindsey and Dustin Bradstreet, because they are very knowledgeable and on top of things. As a team, we really appreciate all they do in being part of our success. The coaches and staff have also done a great job of making us stay on top of things through the process.”

Indeed, the team behind the teams works tirelessly to monitor and maintain the health and safety of our athletes, coaches, and staff. Responsible for our success story this winter, that team is also keeping FHSU athletes in the game this spring.

Several Tiger student-athletes participating in winter sports are still enjoying success this month and will be in action this weekend. The women’s basketball team won the MIAA regular-season title and qualified for the NCAA Division II Tournament as the No. 1 seed in the Central Region. Four FHSU student-athletes qualified for the NCAA D-II National Indoor Track and Field Meet. And senior A.J. Cooper earned the No. 5 seed in the 285-pound bracket of the D-II National Wrestling Championships.

As we work toward what I would call an “adjusted normalcy,” we continue to proudly cheer on all our student-athletes. Go Tigers!&nbsp;

 </figure>It was just a few months ago when I wondered if Fort Hays State University Tiger athletics would happen at all during the 2020-21 season. However, not only did our student-athletes take the field, they did so in a safe, winning fashion. Although the fall sports were delayed, all of our student-athletes have a chance to compete this semester. Competition, at least safe competition, would not be possible without the guidance and the hard work of some key individuals – those who comprise the team behind the teams. This includes, among many others, our team doctor, athletic trainers, coaches, facilities staff, and of course, the student-athletes themselves.Since the fall semester, our team administered more than 1,300 COVID-19 tests for athletes alone. Only 1.3 percent of these tests were positive. Thus far, during the second semester, our test results have been below 1 percent positive. From Feb. 22 through the end of the semester, we project another 2,200 tests of athletes, coaches, trainers, and team managers.Spring testing protocols include requiring members of the men’s and women’s basketball, men’s and women’s indoor track and field, and wrestling teams to test their entire rosters weekly. The “travel party” that accompanies our teams is also tested the week of their scheduled departure. High-risk sports, such as football and volleyball, also test their entire rosters during the week of competition. Medium-risk sports, such as soccer, baseball, and softball, test entire rosters when traveling and utilize surveillance testing when not traveling. Low-risk sports, such as track and field, golf, and tennis, test the entire roster prior to traveling.&nbsp;The testing protocols, when warranted, are followed by contact tracing, isolation, and quarantine. Testing is supplemented with numerous cleaning protocols, training and practice protocols, and a lot of open and regular communication with many partners. Our partners include FHSU student health, Ellis County Health, the athletic and medical staff of our rival universities, and MIAA and NCAA personnel.Leading our team behind the teams is the truly remarkable Dr. Wally Wallstrom (Doc Wally), who works with the university through a cooperative agreement with Hays Medical Center. While we have always been grateful for the time and expertise of Doc Wally, his ongoing leadership and recommendations have clearly been the driving force behind our successful winter and spring seasons. Clearly, Doc Wally’s oversight is the reason we have the privilege to gather in the name of Tiger athletics.“I can’t say enough about Doc Wally’s guidance throughout this process,” said Curtis Hammeke, FHSU athletics director. “We have turned to him repeatedly since last spring. He has consulted with Jason Kennedy, the Ellis County health director, and created protocols for us to follow from the weight room last summer, throughout the fall, and into the competitive winter seasons. He has made himself available on a regular basis to address issues in a timely fashion. We have always appreciated all he does for our athletes as our team doctor, but I don’t know how we would have navigated these challenges without him.”Hammeke also noted that he is equally grateful for the tremendous effort the FHSU athletic training staff and Student Health have made to keep our athletes competing this spring. They have done everything from 5 a.m. daily health screenings of our student-athletes to supporting our coaching staff in maintaining appropriate protocols.“While the entire athletic training staff has gone well above and beyond their normal responsibilities, associate athletic trainer Dustin Bradstreet has taken the lead on organizing and implementing the weekly testing,” Hammeke said. “Dustin has been unwavering in his commitment to the safety of our student-athletes and coaching staff. He has willingly taken on a considerable amount of responsibility with great professionalism and ethics. He is a great example of those throughout the country who have stepped forward to address these challenges head on.”&nbsp;There are so many who deserve a spotlight in this article – too many to mention – but let me add just a couple more statements of praise through the eyes of our student-athletes.“It’s definitely been good to get a full season in,” said Jared Vitztum, the leading scorer and rebounder for the Tiger men’s basketball team. “I attribute the success of our testing program to our training staff and the MIAA protocols. Dustin Bradstreet, our trainer, has been a big part of the success,” added Vitztum, a graduate student from Hays. “He is the one making sure we are wearing masks on trips, really keeping us tidy with the rules to follow on and off the court, and obviously all the coaches do their part as well.”Whitney Randall of the Tiger women’s basketball squad agrees. “Our athletic trainers have been really great during the testing process,” said Randall, a senior from Alva, Okla. “I’m grateful for Carlee Lindsey and Dustin Bradstreet, because they are very knowledgeable and on top of things. As a team, we really appreciate all they do in being part of our success. The coaches and staff have also done a great job of making us stay on top of things through the process.”Indeed, the team behind the teams works tirelessly to monitor and maintain the health and safety of our athletes, coaches, and staff. Responsible for our success story this winter, that team is also keeping FHSU athletes in the game this spring.Several Tiger student-athletes participating in winter sports are still enjoying success this month and will be in action this weekend. The women’s basketball team won the MIAA regular-season title and qualified for the NCAA Division II Tournament as the No. 1 seed in the Central Region. Four FHSU student-athletes qualified for the NCAA D-II National Indoor Track and Field Meet. And senior A.J. Cooper earned the No. 5 seed in the 285-pound bracket of the D-II National Wrestling Championships.As we work toward what I would call an “adjusted normalcy,” we continue to proudly cheer on all our student-athletes. I went on this trip knowing full well I’d be resigned to using an alias in place of my friends name here in this story, and that I might be referring to our destination as “somewhere southwest of Cleveland.” You see, die-hard fishermen would as soon rat out their own mother as divulge the location of their honey holes. With that in mind, and even though I was forced to ride blindfolded, and was spun around three times at each stop before removing it, I am comfortable telling you we were at one of Kansas’ major reservoirs.

Gizzard Shad are the bait fish present in most major water impoundments in the US, and the dynamite sport fishing here in Kansas owes its soul to these lowly prey fish. However, shad are hyper- sensitive to oxygen levels in the water and die easily when O2 levels get low. During cold winters when ice covers lakes and reservoirs for a long time, restricted sunlight interrupts photosynthesis which in turn means a disruption in oxygen production by plants in the lakes, often causing a major die-off of gizzard shad.&nbsp;

Such was the case this past winter, as ice remained thick on Kansas lakes, reservoirs and ponds for a couple weeks, resulting in lots of shad dying and either dropping to the bottom of the lake immediately, or floating up to be frozen in the ice.&nbsp; When the ice finally thaws, all those dead shad are washed against shorelines and into backwater bays. The abnormally warm days like we are having now, warm those shallow backwaters first, so the catfish will eventually swarm into them by boat loads for the feast. Its all in the timing; knowing or figuring out when the fish are there.&nbsp;

The best baits to catch early season catfish are pieces of dead shad or other fish, shad gizzards which can be cut from dead shad found along the shore or commercial baits that smell like shad or shad parts. Catfish feed on the bottom by scent, so baits should be fished on the bottom or just slightly above. The most common way to rig for catching early season cats’ is to start with a large, heavy, slip sinker that is loose on the line allowing it to lay on the bottom while the hook and bait can be picked up and carried a short distance by the catfish before setting the hook. Place the sinker a couple feet above the hook, using a swivel to keep it from going any lower on the line. The bait you choose will determine what hook to use; if using a solid bait that can be hooked on a regular hook, a large bait hook or circle hook should be used. If using a dip bait or punch bait that is thinner, treble hooks or hooks made especially for those baits will work best. Since you’ll be fishing in shallow water for these early feeders, you can often fish from the bank or don waders to get you a little farther out. Once the bait is cast as far out as you can toss it, allow lots of slack in the line as these guys will usually pick up the bait and swim a short way before finally inhaling it. Watch and feel your line and when a fish takes up all the slack, vigorously set the hook to be certain to sink it into their boney mouth.

We tried fishing a couple shallow backwaters by wading out far enough to get our bait to the middle of the bay, but a combination of leaky waders and seemingly no catfish there, sent us to the nearest boat dock to launch his boat and try our luck on the lake proper. The lake was too choppy for us to get anywhere but the dam, so we tried our luck at finding some crappie over a brush pile in front of the dam, again with nothing to show for our efforts. We loaded the boat and drove down below the gates at the spillway to fish a short while there before heading home. I landed one nice 18-inch channel cat and my friend found a big freshwater drum before calling it a day.&nbsp;

On years when all the above conditions align, this same scenario will play out on any large lake filled with shad and catfish. It was a fun early outing; we saw a couple bald eagles, stocked up on plenty of free sunshine-administered vitamin D and were “wowed” as usual by all of God’s Creation. So, get out this spring and take a kid fishing as you Explore Kansas Outdoors.

Exploring Outdoors Kansas: Hooking early Kansas cats’

On Wednesday, the Ellis County Health Department announced the seven-day average of new cases per day to be two. This marks the 14th
 consecutive day that Ellis County has reported an average of 5 or fewer
 cases per day. 

Accordingly, the City of Hays' requirement for face 
coverings is now rescinded. Any and all signage referring to the City’s 
face covering requirement can now be discarded.&nbsp;

While the City of
 Hays' face covering requirement has expired, the state’s mask mandate 
remains in effect until the statewide State of Disaster Emergency 
relating to COVID-19 mitigation measures expires.

"It’s my understanding the
Ellis County Commission did not choose to opt out. Therefore, they remain under
the governor’s mask mandate," said Hays City Manager Toby Dougherty on Monday in an interview with Hays Post.

"There’s nothing in effect at the county level. The
county didn’t take action to impose anything. They just chose not to opt out on
what was being imposed at the state level."

Businesses and other entities open to the public can still require customers to wear face coverings in order to enter their premises.&nbsp;

"They have the right to say you need to come in here wearing a mask," Dougherty explained.

"Even if the governor's mask order goes away, there could be corporate or even businesses at the local level that will require masks for entry to the businesses. That's their right."

City of Hays face covering requirement expires

The Ellis County Health Department on Wednesday reported the average number of new coronavirus cases per day in the last seven days remained flat from Monday at two.

It was the 14th consecutive day the per-day virus rate was below five, the metric selected by the Hays City Commission when approving the citywide mask mandate.

The Kansas Department of Health and Environment also identified an additional coronavirus-related death, bringing the total to 73.

There were just three new cases of COVID-19 identified in Ellis County since Monday. There are currently 17 active cases, including three active hospitalizations of Ellis County residents, and 3,681 recovered cases.

As of Wednesday, there were seven COVID-19 inpatients at HaysMed, down from 10 on Tuesday, with one of those active patients and six in the recovery phase.

The seven-day average of percent of positive tests fell nearly a percentage point since Monday to 2.8 percent.

Since reporting began, there have been 3,698 cases of COVID-19 identified in Ellis County.

Of the total&nbsp; 25,411 tests administered, 13.5 percent have returned positive for coronavirus.

Per-day virus rate in Ellis Co. flat at 2; additional death announced

After warm and windy days this week, Friday will see the weather change to cooler and blustery.

The National Weather Service in Dodge City is calling for high temperatures to drop more than 20 degrees from the mid-70s Wednesday to the upper 40s Friday, and the front is also predicted to bring a lengthy bout of precipitation.

By Friday night, the chance of rain will be 80 percent in Ellis County, with up to a half-inch possible. Another three-quarters of an inch is possible Saturday, when the chance of rain is 90 percent, and an additional half inch is possible Sunday.

The cool, wet weather will be accompanied by winds up to 20 mph on Friday.

Farther northwest, the precipitation is expected to be a mix of rain and snow, as the overnight low temperatures will dip below freezing.

Most of western Kansas remains in a red flag warning for increased fire risk on Wednesday, with winds gusting near 40 mph.

NWS: Dry, windy weather will give way to cooler temps, rain

THOMAS COUNTY—One person was injured in an accident just before 2:30a.m. Wednesday in Thomas County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a Beech fixed wing, multi engine&nbsp;aircraft piloted by Kelly B. Gabel, 40, Colby, was taking off at the Colby Airport.

The front wheel dolly did not detach from the front wheel. When the pilot got into the air he noticed that the wheel dolly was still attached and called the Fire Department. While the Fire Department was enroute, the right engine failed and the pilot had to conduct a crash landing in a field near the airport.

EMS transported Gabel to Citizen's Medical Center for treatment of minor injuries.

Pilot hospitalized after small plane crash in NW Kansas

There will be a lot of street work being done in Hays this year.

In addition to the remainder of the North Vine Street Corridor Improvement Project and reconstruction of 27th Street between Hall and Fort, the 2021 street maintenance program will soon get underway as spring weather approaches.

The project bids for this year's program includes seal coat, polypatch, curb and brick repair,&nbsp;concrete patching, mill and overlay, pavement markings, and sidewalk construction.

Jesse Rohr, public works director, presented the low bids totaling from nine contractors to Hays city commissioners during their work session last week.

Total project cost is&nbsp;$959,202.45&nbsp;to be funded out of Special&nbsp;Highway. Another $40,000 in work will be done in-house and there is an additional $5,000 earmarked for sidewalk replacement rebates.

Special Highway-State Gas Tax Refund (KDOT) - $471,150 Connecting Link Maintenance (KDOT) - $74,500 Transfer from city General Fund - $500,000

City commissioners will consider approving the low bids during their meeting Thursday.&nbsp;

In other business at the March 4 work session, city commissioners:

* Reviewed a request by Hays developer Adam Pray for rezoning Big Creek Estates Second Addition from agricultural to a residential general district, along with final plat approval. City staff and the Hays Area Planning Commission are recommending approval of both. The property southeast of Hays is outside city limits but within the three-mile ETJ (Extraterritorial Jurisdiction) of the city. Commissioners will consider a vote on the requests at their Thursday meeting.

* Heard a <a href="https://hayspost.com/posts/4736ee7a-d639-4c38-b03b-a441b496e8b7">request for a $30,000 donation by First Call For Help</a> towards construction of temporary housing.&nbsp;

 </figure>By BECKY KISER Hays PostThere will be a lot of street work being done in Hays this year.In addition to the remainder of the North Vine Street Corridor Improvement Project and reconstruction of 27th Street between Hall and Fort, the 2021 street maintenance program will soon get underway as spring weather approaches.The project bids for this year's program includes seal coat, polypatch, curb and brick repair,&nbsp;concrete patching, mill and overlay, pavement markings, and sidewalk construction.Jesse Rohr, public works director, presented the low bids totaling from nine contractors to Hays city commissioners during their work session last week.Total project cost is&nbsp;$959,202.45&nbsp;to be funded out of Special&nbsp;Highway. Another $40,000 in work will be done in-house and there is an additional $5,000 earmarked for sidewalk replacement rebates.<figure>

🎥  Nearly $1M in street maintenance bids to be voted on by city commission 

Every year, the Hays Arts Council’s Spring Art Walk brings
hundreds to downtown Hays to explore a variety of art from artist across the
region and beyond.

And after a year of canceled or adjusted events in light of
the ongoing pandemic, the event will go on this year in an exciting new format
and on a new day of the week.

“Even in these strange times, we still have been carrying on
here with a lot of amazing a wonderful things,” said HAC executive director Brenda
Meder.

Included among the variety of ongoing programming available
online and in the HAC gallery, she said the Spring Art Walk — anchored by the 52nd
annual Smoky Hill Art Competition and Exhibition, “That great, big,
wonderfully juried show that we do each year” — will go on, with some
considerations for safety.

That exhibition is the longest-running judged fine arts
competition in the state, with this year’s works selected by art curator and Strecker
Nelson Gallery owner Jay Nelson.

The most notable change to the Art Walk this year is likely
the shift from Friday to Saturday.

Meder said she knows there is a lot of enthusiasm for the
traditional Friday night event.

“Which is normally very exciting and fun,” she said. “But at
this time that is not in the community's best interest.”

But by having extended hours through a full day, rather than
a short time frame Friday night, the change allows for attendees to space out and have the
time to enjoy the joy, without as much concern for the number of people together
in a confined space, especially those stopping to see the Smoky Hill exhibition.

“We want to give everybody a chance, a time to feel enjoying
that,” Meder said.

With the change the Art Walk is set to run from 10 a.m. to 4
p.m., Saturday, May 1.

“So, we are spreading out what we would do in a three to
three and a half hour evening, into a six-hour day,” Meder said. 

For safety concerns, the regular food and drinks offerings
that would accompany the exhibitions will also be curtailed.

Despite the changes, Meder is confident participants will still
have an amazing experience taking in the exhibitions as well as exploring
downtown Hays.

“It will be a great day for all of these amazing eating and
dining establishments, eateries, bistros and coffee shops we have here in
downtown Hays now,” Meder said. “People can truly spend the entire day, and you
don’t have to give up the wonderful little hospitality aspect. You can go to
the restaurants then and give yourself a mask break and really enjoy the day.”

While many of the details are still being worked out, she
said a live drum circle is planned as well as an outdoor concert in the downtown
pavilion.

“It will be a great day to spend an entire day in downtown
Hays,” Meder said.

While preparations for the Art Walk are underway, artist
from across the state still have time to enter the Smoky Hill competition.

All artists living within the state can submit work not previously displayed at the Hays Arts Council and produced
in the last two years.

The preliminary selection will be completed from
photographic submission, for both two- and three-dimensional works, with no
restriction on form.

“Any art form possible — it is very likely you will find it
in the Smoky Hill exhibit,” Meder said.

Cash awards totaling, $2,750 will be given out during the
competition.

While the Smoky Hill exhibition will likely draw a crowd to
the Arts Council, Meder said there is an opportunity to view incredible work
from Fort Hays State University artists, with Fortitude and Persistence.

“Right now, an incredible representation of all things art
and design from Fort Hays State University,” Meder said. The show represents work
from graduate students, faculty as well as selected undergrads.

The works also represent a variety of media, including painting,
ceramics, photography and digital media from the graphic design department.

“There is a wonderful video that is on a loop continuing to
run with (works) from different marketing, branding and design projects they
are working on, as well as the animation program that got started at Fort Hays,
through the Graphic Design program,” Meder said.

Exhibitions like this one, are especially important now, as
the students have dealt with working remotely, with far fewer opportunities to showcase
their work as COVID precautions were in place.

“It’s a very comprehensive exhibition, but it is truly an
impressive overview of the Fort Hays State University Department of Art and
Design,” Meder said.

Fortitude and Persistance is scheduled to be exhibited until April 22.

🎙 Spring Art Walk planned, FHSU exhibition underway at Hays Arts Council

The Hays USD 489 school district is moving forward with adding seven new staff positions for the 2021-22 school year.

The new positions include: • English teacher at Hays High School • Student support/credit retrieval position at Hays High School &nbsp;• Administrative support staff person/athletic director at Hays Middle School • Elementary music teacher • Elementary physical education teacher <a href="https://www.ksdetasn.org/mtss/overview">• MTSS coach</a> • Family and community communications outreach position

Superintendent Ron Wilson said the district planned to use federal COVID relief funds to pay for the credit retrieval position at Hays High School, MTSS coach, and a family and community communications outreach position.

The district, as well as districts across the state, are also receiving increases in state funds during the next two years as a result of the state Gannon lawsuit. Wilson said some of these funds would be used to pay for the other added positions.

"We are trying to build better programs — better opportunities for our students inside our district," Wilson said.&nbsp;

HHS has had recent increases in enrollment, which means English class sizes have increased. The average is 25.5 students. Adding another teacher would allow HHS to decrease its class sizes.

The credit&nbsp;retrieval class, which would be offered during the regular school day, would help students, who may be at risk of dropping out or not graduating, complete a failed course.

The MTSS coach would help implement MTSS, which is system aimed at&nbsp; keeping students from falling behind in their studies.

"I think when we talk about being a champion for all kids, this is the step we have to make," Wilson said of the MTSS coach.

&nbsp;Wilson said especially coming off of COVID, students may have gaps in their learning.

"This is really going to identify those gaps and identify things we can do quickly to address those gaps," he said.&nbsp;

Board members noted some of the positions that were being added had been positions that had existed in the past, but had been eliminated because of declining enrollment and budget cuts.

The district will be recruiting for the positions immediately. The board will approve the individual hires at a later date.

Administration said future staffing requests could include a HHS family and consumer science teacher, HHS health/PE teacher, HHS welding/woods teacher, HMS full-time vocal music teacher and an additional elementary librarian.

Hays USD 489 to hire 7 new staff members for 2021-22 school year

The Wonder Women League's Project Suitcase recently received two donations to continue the program.

The project received a $5,000 donation from the Schmidt Foundation and a $500 donation from the Ellis County Bar Association.&nbsp;

Project Suitcase provides duffle bags with comfort items to children who are removed from their homes in Ellis County for abuse or neglect.

The duffle bags contain items, including new pajamas, underwear and socks, fleece blankets, snacks, a stuffed animal, personal hygiene products, McDonald's meal certificates, note of support from WWL and a note from a former foster child, as well as a small toy, such as a deck of cards, fidget spinner or Rubik's Cube.&nbsp;

The bags are coordinated for appropriate gender and age of the children.&nbsp;Diapers and baby formula are included when needed.

The project was launched in fall 2020, and these two donations will allow the program to continue into another year.

HUGOTON - The TMP-Marian Monarchs outscored Hugoton 19-7 to end the first half and open the third quarter on their way to an 82-67 win in the 3A state quarterfinals Tuesday.

The first quarter featured four ties before the Monarchs built a 20-16 lead on a Jace Wentling three-point play.

Hugoton retook the lead at the end of the first quarter with a three-pointer at the buzzer. The Eagles led 21-20 through the first quarter.

The Eagles finished the first quarter and opened the second quarter on a 9-0 run and led by five at 25-20.

TMP answered with a 12-3 run capped off by back-to-back Dylan Werth field goals to put TMP up 32-28.

Hugoton fought back to tie the game at 32 but on a defensive rebound the Eagles Sawyer Harper tried to avoid going out of bounds with the ball and threw it right into the hands of TMP's Kade Harris. Harris converted the layup to put TMP up 34-32 and they never trailed again.&nbsp;

Hugoton cut it to one before TMP took a 38-33 lead into the second half.

The Monarchs outscored Hugoton 13-6 to open the second half and led by 11 at 51-40. The Eagles were able to close within seven at 54-47 at the end of three quarters.

After ending the third quarter with his first three pointer of the game TMP's Lucas Lang hit back-to-back three's to open the fourth quarter putting TMP up 60-48.

Trailing by double-digits with just over four minutes left Hugoton elected to try and extend the game by sending TMP to the free throw line.

In the fourth quarter the Monarchs converted 16-of-20 at the line to secure 82-67 victory.

Jackson Schulte led four Monarchs in double-figures with 24 points to go along with his seven rebounds.

Lucas Lang added 19 points, Dylan Werth finished with 18 points and 13 rebounds and Jace Wentling tied his career-high with 11 points.

TMP has now won 12 straight and will head into the 3A tournament finals at 21-4.

They will take on Hesston at 3 p.m. on Friday in the state semifinals in Hutchinson.

🏀TMP boys advance to state semifinals with win over Hugoton

Hays Wrestling Club competed in the District 4 championships Saturday, March 6 in Dodge City. Hays Wrestling Club had 52 wrestlers compete for a chance to wrestle in the Kansas State Folkstyle Championships in Mulvane March 12 to 14.

Now is the time to finalize plans for kochia (aka fireweed) control. Recent research suggests that kochia can begin emerging in early February with most kochia emerging by early April. Kochia seedlings emerge in dense populations and have dense hairs that make adequate post herbicide coverage and adsorption difficult, with disappointing results. In addition, glyphosate-resistant kochia is prevalent across western Kansas, making kochia control even more challenging. For these reasons, it is important to apply pre-emergence herbicides in late winter or early spring to control this weed before it emerges.&nbsp;

Herbicide program components to effectively manage kochia at germination

To successfully manage kochia, an herbicide program needs two components:

Precipitation events during late winter are often too small to activate longer residual herbicides, but dicamba may control kochia for 4 to 6 weeks until the longer residual herbicide is incorporated.

The best timing to apply herbicides for kochia control is generally January through the first week of March but prior to kochia emergence, which can vary depending on weather conditions. Later applications, for example, at the time of burndown, are more likely to occur after kochia emergence, which increases the risk of control failure.&nbsp;

 <li>a very soluble and effective herbicide that can be incorporated with very little precipitation, such as dicamba; and</li><li>an herbicide that has longer residual activity, which will require perhaps 0.75 inches or more precipitation for adequate incorporation, such as atrazine.</li>

A Fall-applied treatment can also be effective to help ensure timely application, and good control, however, they are not likely to effectively control later flushes of kochia.The duration of a fall applied herbicide in early December and combined with a spring pre-emerge application in late February has achieved greater than 80% control of kochia in Kansas. These treatments were conducted in Tribune and Garden City by K-State Weed Science specialist. They used three different treatments and each one was equally effective.
