The Kansas Department of Health and Environment on Friday reported three new&nbsp; COVID-19 cases in Ellis County since Wednesday.

As of Friday, the University of Kansas Health System reported two COVID-19 inpatients at HaysMed, one active and one recovering.

Since reporting began, there have been 3,747 cases of COVID-19 identified in Ellis County, including 71 coronavirus-related deaths — the last of which was reported on March 10.

Sara Breckbill will cross the FHSU commencement stage today, graduating with a Bachelor of Business Administration in marketing with an emphasis in digital marketing from Fort Hays State University’s Robbins College of Business and Entrepreneurship.&nbsp;

While some seniors are moving on and joining the workforce after what has been an unprecedented year, Breckbill will be returning in the fall to complete a minor in communication, certificate in leadership, and take the field for one more softball season.&nbsp;

“I was worried I would be putting my life on hold for one more year,” Breckbill said. “But then I realized I would get to do the thing I love for one more year and I could never get that back.”

Breckbill started in all 46 games this season, and led the team in batting average (.331), on-base percentage (.413), hits (46), RBIs (27), and doubles (11). She was also named an All-MIAA Honorable Mention at utility/non-pitcher. Breckbill and the team have come a long way, ending the year with a 24-22 record, seeing major progress from her freshman season finish at 13-37.

“It was tough that first year. Our coach had been here three years and we were focused on improving individually, as a team, and setting a foundation for the program,” Breckbill said. “Each year we’ve gotten better, though. Team chemistry improved and this year we were able to go into post-season play for the first time since I’ve been here and that’s the dream- to keep getting better and going further.”

Growing up in Parker, Colorado, Breckbill has played softball since she was seven. A talented athlete with an insatiable work ethic, dreaming of playing in college, Breckbill trained hard and received scholarship offers from colleges in Colorado and Texas. Her high school coach was an FHSU alumnus, and told her about the incredible academic programs and warm and welcoming college town on the plains.&nbsp;

“This is where I was supposed to be, even if its cheesy and cliché, it’s true,” Breckbill said.&nbsp;

Breckbill was in the first freshman class to live in the new Victor E Village and a part of the Athletes Today learning community. Being a part of the learning community helped her get acquainted with Hays and make lifelong friends.&nbsp;

“I’m nostalgic walking around there and remembering playing pool or board games and studying and staying up until 3 a.m. writing a paper,” Breckbill said.&nbsp;

The friends she made in those first years at Fort Hays State would be the same ones that she would navigate the COVID-19 pandemic alongside. Student-athletes were faced with many changes throughout the year, including daily COVID-19 testing, taking hybrid classes, and creating smaller pods or groups of people who would work out, study, and stay together to ensure health and safety of all the Tiger athletes. While it was tough, it made it all worthwhile to play in the Spring 2021 season.&nbsp;

“The people of Hays and FHSU are what make it special,” Breckbill said. “In this college town, everyone is involved in athletics and the community turns out to cheer for your games. It’s an awesome environment and even though it’s been different this year, we’d do it over again just to feel that energy and sense of community pride again.”

From lifelong friends to faculty, staff, and supporters who feel like family, there's nothing quite like the Fort Hays State atmosphere. FHSU faculty, staff, and supporters all play a massive part in the life of student-athletes. Breckbill can recount many times someone has saved her clippings from newspapers, left positive notes for the team, or sent an email just to check in and let her know they are proud of her effort in the classroom and on the field.&nbsp;

“There’s so many people that have made a difference and helped us get where we are today,” Breckbill said.&nbsp;

Thanks to the support of the FHSU and Hays Community, Breckbill and her teammates have grown up over the past four years, academically, personally, and as athletes.&nbsp;&nbsp;

“We have a goal every year and it’s important to our team that we excel academically- that’s why we’re here,” Breckbill said. “We learned to adapt and manage our time.”

Breckbill dreams of working for a college, doing social media management for athletes to combine her passion for sports and her newfound love for social media marketing. In one of Dr. Mary Martin's courses, she discovered her interest in marketing and digital marketing and understood the opportunity available in sports marketing. &nbsp;

“This semester we are writing a blog about social media- how to get started, how to get a job and internship,” said Breckbill. “I’ve really enjoyed it and it’s beneficial to do things that I will do in the workforce. I’m able to apply what I’m doing in the classroom right now.”

For now, her plans to land a career in sports marketing will wait as she continues to build her skills academically and, on the field, while preparing for one final season at FHSU.

AURORA, Colo. — An Arapahoe County jury on Thursday&nbsp; determined that a previously convicted rapist was guilty of sexually 
assaulting another woman in Cherry Hills Village and carjacking yet 
another woman in the parking lot of an Aurora gym two years ago.

Jurors convicted Tre Carrasco, 26, on nearly a dozen a 
charges late Thursday afternoon, including a felony sexual assault count 
in connection with the rape of a Mexican au pair working in Cherry Hills
 Village in winter 2019.

Additional convictions included burglary with a deadly 
weapon, aggravated robbery, car theft, false reporting, trespassing and 
attempting to influence a public servant, according to the 18th Judicial
 District Attorney’s Office.

Jurors agreed Carrasco&nbsp;<a href="https://sentinelcolorado.com/0trending/kansas-man-accused-of-trying-to-assault-multiple-women-1-in-aurora-days-after-getting-out-of-prison/">attempted to kidnap a woman in Aurora</a>
 while stealing her car outside of a 24-hour Fitness on South Abilene 
Street on Feb. 7, 2019. They also concluded that he used the same car to
 drive to a Cherry Hills Village home in the middle of the day, where he
 raped another woman working as an au pair less than a week later.

Aurora police arrested Carrasco, a native of Hays,
 on Feb. 12, after pulling him over near the intersection of East Colfax
 Avenue and Galena Street. He was driving the same car that was reported
 stolen from the woman at the local&nbsp; 24-Hour Fitness in Aurora the week before.

Carrasco has also been accused of raping another woman at 
gunpoint in the passenger seat of her car in Kansas prior to the 
Colorado crimes.

“This is a dangerous predator who should be incarcerated 
to keep him off the streets and keep our community safe,” District 
Attorney John Kellner said in a statement. “He was in prison for similar
 acts in Kansas. He got out of prison and within days committed a new 
offense there. Within two weeks of his release, he came here to Colorado
 and continued his violent crimes. I am grateful to this jury for their 
work, as these verdicts will help us keep this serial rapist behind 
bars.”

Carrasco has a history of lascivious behavior dating back 
more than a decade, according to court documents. He was named as a 
suspect in at least six other crimes in Kansas that were sexual in 
nature between November 2008 and July 2011, records show.

In 2008 and 2009, Carrasco was suspected of peeping into windows and tickling women’s feet and legs as they slept.

In June 2010, he was suspected of raping a woman in Hays. A
 year later, Carrasco was arrested after police said he chased a Hays 
woman walking on a street, beat her and violently sexually assaulted 
her.

In April 2013, Carrasco was&nbsp;<a href="https://www.hayspost.com/2013/04/08/hays-teen-will-be-sentenced-today/">sentenced to slightly more than eight years in prison</a>&nbsp;for the July 2011 assault. He was released from prison in Kansas days before his crime spree in Colorado, records show.

Carrasco incurred a litany of disciplinary infractions 
while in Kansas prisons between 2014 and 2018, including using 
stimulants, disobeying orders and disrespecting corrections officers, 
according to Kansas Department of Corrections records.

In July 2020, he pleaded guilty to a felony contraband 
charge and was sentenced to two years in Colorado state prison. He’s 
been detained at the Arkansas Valley Correctional Facility in Buena 
Vista since then, but was transferred back to jail in Arapahoe County to
 stand trial.

Carrasco is set to be sentenced in his Colorado case on July 8.

Hays City Commissioner Mason Ruder is concerned about the two
deadly drug overdoses this week of young people in Hays.

The Hays Police Department issued a <a href="https://hayspost.com/posts/cb9b2a33-57ec-47e8-a166-2bea69b3e77f">news release</a> Thursday afternoon about the incidents and their investigation.

In closing comments at Thursday night's city commission meeting, Ruder urged people to make smart choices and watch out for their family and friends.

A third person who overdosed is expected to survive.&nbsp;

In the past 50 hours, the Hays Police Department has responded to three reports of drug overdoses. A 20- and 24-year-old have both died in separate incidents. The third overdose resulted in the victim being transported to the emergency room and that person is expected to live.&nbsp;

Investigations suggest that at least two incidents are related to the use of opioids, possibly mixed with another substance. In both of these cases, Naloxone (Narcan) was given at the scene prior to emergency responders' arrival.&nbsp; All three of these incidents are being investigated by the Hays Police Department, and we encourage anyone with information about them to call and speak to a detective.&nbsp;

During an opioid overdose, breathing can be dangerously slowed or stopped, causing brain damage or death. Physical signs of an opioid overdose include:&nbsp;

Hays PD: Two drug overdose deaths in just over two days

Installation of artificial turf on the eight baseball/softball fields at Bickle Schmidt Sports Complex will begin August 1.

"I couldn't believe we could get it done in this amount of time," said Sandy Jacobs, Hays mayor, after commissioners unanimously approved the low bid plus four alternates for the project during Thursday night's city commission meeting.&nbsp;

Jeff Boyle, director of parks, presented the proposal for a final vote.

"This has changed a little from <a href="https://hayspost.com/posts/4667bf76-de51-41b7-a44d-dfe298e68260">last week</a> with the addition of the fifth alternate," Boyle told commissioners, "and the Hays Recreation Commission (HRC) has graciously increased its donation another $50,000, to a total of $750,000."

"We couldn't have done it without you," Jacobs told Roger Bixenman, commission superintendent, and other HRC employees in the audience.&nbsp;

Mid-America Sports Construction, Lee's Summit, Missouri, had the low bid of $1.5 million for turfing all eight infields, plus four alternates.

Thanks to savings from low bids on two other projects financed with the city's 1/4 cent share of the Ellis County sales tax, a fifth alternate for turfing the bullpens was added at the request of Commissioner Shaun Musil.

"I've had people ask if it isn't good enough now, and it is. We've got a great complex," Musil said.

"But everybody around us is doing this, if not more, and if we want to continue to be viable and bring in these tournaments, we have to do this."&nbsp;

Expansion of the infields on fields 5, 6, and 8 will allow tournament play for 14-and-under athletes and 13-and-under athletes, who currently have to use other ballfields in town.

Looking at a report from the Fort Hays State University Docking Institute, Musil said more than a million dollars was brought into the community in 2018 via the sports complex.

"That's almost paying for [these improvements] in one year," Musil said, "and the more tournaments we get, the more people that will be coming here."

Jacobs said the artificial turf project is the second-most discussed topic she's had with constituents since being elected.&nbsp;

"It's a really wonderful thing for our community, not only from a quality-of-life issue but from an economic standpoint."

Commissioners thanked the recreation commission for its support.

"I don't know if you twisted arms or not," Michael Berges said about the increased donation, "but I think it just shows the collaboration [with the city] be able to do that with your board. It's very much appreciated.

"I think it shows faith in your board. I think it shows some faith in our commission."

The new shade structures are nearly completed at the complex, according to Bixenman, and new scoreboards will be installed beginning in June.&nbsp;

In other business, commissioners conducted two public hearings, with no comment, and approved two ordinances vacating excess right of way to Pheasant Inn restaurant and Hays Chevrolet that was created when the west Vine Street frontage road was removed during construction of the double roundabout at 32nd/33rd Streets.&nbsp;

A 21-year-old Hays man was sentenced to five and a half
years in prison Wednesday in Ellis County District Court for a pair of child
sex crimes.

Christopher Lynn Cox, 21, was sentenced to 66 months in
prison for criminal sodomy and sexual battery.

Cox was also originally charged with rape but that charge
was dropped as a result of the plea agreement reached in March.

The charges stemmed from two separate incidents in February
2020. Court documents accused Cox of providing alcohol and having sex
with a 14-year-old girl on Feb. 17. He was also charged with inappropriately
touching a 16-year-old without her consent on Feb. 1.

Cox was initially expected to be sentenced to 59 months in
prison but Ellis County Attorney Robert Anderson said Cox’s criminal history
was different than expected so that changed the prison time to 66 months.

Once he is released from prison, Cox will be required to
register as a sex offender for life and will be subject to post-release
supervision, formerly parole, for life.

Hays man sentenced to 5 and a half years for sex crimes

Fort Hays State University Honors College student, sophomore Brynn Wooten, has been named a 2021 Barry&nbsp;Goldwater&nbsp;Scholar. This nationally competitive scholarship will&nbsp;fully fund her final two years of undergraduate study.&nbsp;Wooten is the first FHSU student to receive this prestigious award.

Wooten is a geosciences and biology major from Westminster, Colorado. Her passion for science, especially paleobiology, began at a very young age. As a child, she convinced her parents to take a less direct route on family trips to visit relatives in Texas, so&nbsp;that&nbsp;she could visit the Sternberg Museum of Natural History in Hays. During her college search process, Wooten learned&nbsp;of&nbsp;Sternberg&nbsp;Museum’s affiliation&nbsp;with&nbsp;Fort Hays State, and immediately decided she wanted to&nbsp;become a Tiger.

In her Goldwater Scholarship application package, Wooten shared her passion for investigating the intersection of paleontology and biology, along with her vision to become a research scientist.&nbsp;

“From the moment Brynn arrived on campus, her excitement about learning and focus on the future of scientific knowledge in paleobiology deeply impressed me,” said Honors College Director Dr. Kevin Amidon.&nbsp;

Amidon&nbsp;went on to say, “Her qualifications for the Barry Goldwater Scholarship were clear to me from the outset, and she richly deserves the confidence that the Goldwater Foundation has placed in her.”

When most people think about paleontology, they think of dinosaurs. Wooten is not very interested in dinosaurs. Rather, she is fascinated by how other animals evolved after the great extinction of the dinosaurs more than 66 million years ago. Wooten plans to pursue a career studying paleoecology and teach at a university that hosts a natural history museum.

Wooten credits several FHSU faculty members for helping her secure this tremendous scholarship opportunity.&nbsp;

“I am extremely happy and proud to bring this honor to Fort Hays State University, and I certainly could not have gotten to this point without the amazing faculty and staff who work here,” said Wooten. “I would like to especially thank Dr. Kevin Amidon and Dr. Lexey Bartlett worked on the application with me, Dr. Lorelei Patrick and Drs. Jeanne and Jonathan Sumrall helped me with letters of recommendation and clarifying my application, and Dr. Laura Wilson helped me with my final revisions. Three-day weather outlook

It’s no secret that as we age our senses decline. This is normal and is called age-related sensory decline. Earlier this week I had the opportunity to share the educational program “Gray for a Day” with a group of high school students in their human development class. My presentation provided the young people with an “aha” moment as they thought about family members experiencing losses. I also used my time with them to share my thoughts on living a healthy lifestyle to push back these signs of aging.&nbsp;

The “Gray for a Day” kit contained glasses which simulated what it would be like to have macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, cataracts or glaucoma. Participants who kept the glasses on while doing the rest of the exercises were challenged to do simple tasks like counting out pills (we used beads) to put in a medicine dispenser. I also had the students tape a couple of their fingers together to simulate the stiffness that is experienced with arthritis. Tying a piece of yarn around their partners wrist was no small task when they couldn’t bend fingers.&nbsp;

Ear plugs in their ears and part of a cotton ball in their nose affected their sense of hearing and smell. Breathing through a straw helped participants see what it would feel like if they experienced decreased lung efficiency such as COPD.

The group of high school students stayed engaged throughout the activity. In evaluations I had them fill out, they indicated that it tested their patience. Several others noted they could see how hard it was to do simple functions when people age. &nbsp;

The PowerPoint presentation I opened with, highlighted that beginning in the mid-40’s throughout the 70’s, the senses of hearing, vision, touch, taste and smell begin to decline. However, I pointed out that while sensory decline is normal with increasing age, not everyone will experience it and those who do will experience it in different ways. Many older people adjust quite well and are able to compensate for their sensory losses.&nbsp;

A goal of this program was to help participants develop skills necessary to support someone who may be experiencing age-related sensory and functional challenges. A bonus was to help the students understand how taking steps to improve or maintain their health now will contribute to sensory and functional well-being in the future. Reminding them that their choices of food and exercise now could make a huge difference in the future is the key.

After construction of the first traffic roundabout in Hays — a double "peanut" at 32nd and 33rd Street intersections on north Vine Street — portions of the west frontage street were removed, creating excess right of way.

Adjacent property owners Hays Chevrolet, 2917 Vine, and Pheasant Run restaurant, 3201 Vine, have petitioned the city to vacate the remnant right of way north and south of 32nd Street.

The business owners' petitions reserve existing utility easements to the city and public, according to John Braun, Hays project manager.

"The owners of Pheasant Run have petitioned for 2,237 square feet of excess right of way, where their parking lot was adjusted utilizing space that was once the frontage road to compensate for parking they lost adjacent to 32nd Street during construction of the roundabout," Braun said.

Hays Chevrolet owners have petitioned for 5,889 square feet of excess right of way where the frontage road was removed.&nbsp;

"This helps compensate for the widening of 32nd Street at the approach to the roundabout," he said.

"With Pheasant Run, it's basically done. The parking lot actually extends out onto that.

"With Hays Chevrolet, should they desire to make any adjustments to their configuration, they would be able to build a parking lot or access. Obviously, reserving the utility easements that are there would encumber the property from inhibiting access to utilities," Braun added. "They would be limited to what they could do with it."

Public hearings for both petitions will be held during Thursday's city commission meeting followed by approval of ordinances to vacate the right of ways.

The city attorney's office was involved in the process details and preparing the legal documents.

The action would have no financial impact to the city.

The properties — behind the sidewalks — would become that of the business owners and be back on the Ellis County property tax rolls.

"We're only vacating property that is now Pheasant Run parking lot or grass out in front of Hays Chevrolet," Braun said.

🎥 Businesses petition city to vacate frontage right of way after roundabout built

A Hays man was sentenced to more than seven and a half years
in prison Wednesday after pleading guilty earlier this year to a pair of child
sex crimes.

Christopher Leroy Boese, 20, was sentenced to 94 months or
seven years and 10 months in prison for criminal sodomy and electronic
solicitation of a minor in Ellis County District Court.

Boese was also originally charged with rape but that charge
was dropped as a result of the <a href="https://hayspost.com/posts/75fb48e5-e093-4014-812f-3efb4f3ec5b2">plea agreement</a> reached in March.

Boese, according to court documents, was accused of having

in prison Wednesday after pleading guilty earlier this year to a pair of child
sex crimes.Christopher Leroy Boese, 20, was sentenced to 94 months or
seven years and 10 months in prison for criminal sodomy and electronic
solicitation of a minor in Ellis County District Court.Boese was also originally charged with rape but that charge
was dropped as a result of the <a href="https://hayspost.com/posts/75fb48e5-e093-4014-812f-3efb4f3ec5b2">plea agreement</a> reached in March.Boese, according to court documents, was accused of having
sex with a 14-year-old on Dec. 29, 2019. He used Snapchat to message and set up

Hays man sentenced to nearly 8 years on child sex charges

The annual Spring Convocation at Fort Hays State University was held virtually on May 7. President Tisa Mason, along with Provost and Vice-President for Academic Affairs, Dr. Jill Arensdorf recognized the winners of the Spring Semester 2021 faculty awards and 2021 alumni commencement awards as well as the recipients of the Cross-Border Educational Excellence Award, Navigator, Outstanding Graduate Advisor, and Edmund Shearer Faculty Advisor of the Year awards.

The live-streamed event also featured annual reports from Haley Reiter, outgoing student government association president; Jennifer Whitmer, university staff senate president; Dr. Kevin Splichal, faculty senate president; and Dr. Janett Naylor-Tinknell, AAUP president.

The spring Outstanding Faculty Award winners are: Dr. Jonathan Sumrall, assistant professor of geosciences, for scholarly activity; Dr. April Terry, assistant professor of criminal justice, for teaching; and Jacque Jacobs, program specialist in the Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders, for service.

All recipients received a $500 award for their accomplishments, thanks to the generosity and support of Commerce Bank. In addition to the monetary gift, the college deans are providing an additional $250 in the budget of the recipient's department.

Sumrall was recognized for producing five academic publications and for the notable quality of his works&nbsp;as well. His publications are continually cited by others in the field, validating his exceptional research talents.

“Jonathan enhances the classroom experiences for his students by integrating his research with the use of field trips, in class experiments, and other expeditions,” Arensdorf said. “His talents and mentorship of students have proven to be an asset to our commitment to undergraduate research at the university.”

Terry was recognized for approaching each course as an opportunity to engage students in experiences related to careers and incorporating activities that align with the criminal justice system. Using her creativity and passion for teaching, Terry consistently enhances the experiential-learning component of her courses.

“No matter what topic I teach, I am passionate about talking about social-justice issues,” Terry said. “This is a common thread throughout my courses, and we will talk about different forms of oppression, cultural, and systemic issues. I try to serve as a model for them and how we can apply what we talk about in class, and how that applies to real time issues, and how they can be inspired to go do something.”

Terry sees her responsibility not only in teaching, service, and scholarship but also in demonstrating how those pieces are integrated into the classroom. Incorporating experiential learning, service, and research in the classroom while involving students in real-world experiences provides that collaboration.

Jacobs was recognized with the Outstanding Service Award for the compassion she displays to all clients in the FHSU Herndon Clinic.

“She works tirelessly to ensure all receive the highest quality of care both in the Herndon Clinic, and throughout the community,” Arensdorf said of Jacobs. “Notably, this past year throughout the pandemic, Jacque created and implemented a comprehensive plan that provided a safe environment to continue to serve clients while providing a quality learning experience for her students.”

The honorees join three other faculty members recognized for teaching, research, and scholarly activity in the Fall 2020 semester, as candidates for the Faculty Member-of-the-Year Award. The recipient of the upcoming award, along with a $1,000 prize, will be announced at the Fall Convocation in August.

Each of the five colleges of the University nominates outstanding faculty members to receive the awards. Recipients are selected by a committee appointed by the respective college deans.

Cross-Border Educational Excellence Award

The Cross-Border Education Excellence Award was awarded to Ryan Olsen, instructor of leadership studies in the College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences. Olsen teaches on the Shenyang Normal University campus in Shenyang, Liaoning, China. The award was established to recognize an individual who exemplifies excellence in contributing to FHSU students’ academic experiences at a cross-border partner institution.&nbsp;

Olsen could not attend the awards presentation due to the time difference, but Arensdorf shared his response to receiving the award. “Receiving this award is one of my greatest honors, as it is proving to me that adaptability, empathy, and changes in latitudes and attitudes are necessary each and every day.”

The Navigator Award was presented to Kris Munsch, assistant professor of applied technology. The award was established in 1998 by the Student Government Association to recognize an outstanding academic advisor based on how closely the advisor adheres to the university goals for academic advising.&nbsp;

Munsch is revered by his students for the way he motivates those around him to strive for excellence in the classroom and beyond.&nbsp;

“He pushes his students to become visionaries and thinkers who come up with real solutions,” Arensdorf said.&nbsp;“The grit that he instills and demonstrates to all the students he interacts with is inspiring.”&nbsp;

The Outstanding Graduate Advisor Award recognizes a faculty member who is an advisor of graduate students and provides leadership and service in other activities on campus. The award was presented to Sarah Patterson, Graduate Program Coordinator in the Robbins College of Business and Entrepreneurship.&nbsp;

Nomination letters highlighted Patterson’s commitment to assisting her students in selecting the necessary courses to ensure timely completion of their degrees. The letters also described her attentiveness to connecting students with campus resources, and flexibility to accommodate the many different schedules of nontraditional students.&nbsp;

Edmund Shearer Faculty Advisor of the Year Award

The Edmund Shearer Faculty Advisor of the Year Award was presented to Mr. Kim Stewart, chair and professor of technology studies in the Werth College of Science, Technology, and Mathematics. &nbsp;

The Shearer Award is presented to individuals who have demonstrated outstanding academic advising of students.&nbsp;Shearer, a former Chair of the Department of Chemistry, was known for the high value he placed on student advisement. One advisor can be recognized from each of the five academic colleges.&nbsp;

Stewart has built a reputation for being an outstanding advisor through his commitment to building relationships with the students, not just advising. A former student wrote in a recommendation letter for Stewart’s nomination, “As a teacher and advisor, Mr. Stewart guided me through the program, making sure I took all of the required courses. More importantly, he encouraged me to leave my comfort zone and become active in TECA, our student organization.”&nbsp;

The now successful high-school educator wrote that because of Stewart's dedication to his success, he won a national championship in TECA's teaching lesson competition, was part of a national championship team in live manufacturing and has won several other awards. Each letter of support for Stewart's nomination shared similar stories of his devotion to students' success and the impact he has on students' lives long after they graduate from Fort Hays State. &nbsp;&nbsp;

“He has an innate ability to make students feel like they are the most important students on campus,” Arensdorf said of Stewart. “He has dedicated his career to making a positive difference in the lives of our students, and Fort Hays State is fortunate to call Kim one of our own.”

FHSU spring convocation features 2020-21 faculty awards

The cooler wet weather has been good for our wheat, but also very conducive for a fungus in wheat called stripe rust. Late last week and early this week. I have been able to find trace to low amounts of stripe rust mainly in the lower canopy in susceptible varieties in both Ellis and Barton Counties. As I am writing this article, I strongly suspect that stripe rust will continue to increase, especially given the extended weather forecast. So scouting your wheat fields is advised.&nbsp;

Stripe rust is most yield-limiting when it advances to the upper canopy, particularly the flag leaf. The risk of stripe rust causing yield loss is a function of three things:

Scouting is a critical first step for stripe rust control. Fungicide applications are most beneficial when the level of disease in the field is below 10% severity. University research has demonstrated that applications that protect the fully emerged flag leaf (between Feekes 8 and Feekes 10) are most effective. Applications applied prior to flag leaf emergence will not adequately protect the flag leaf or the head. Always check and follow product label recommendations to ensure full compliance with growth-stage limitations and pre-harvest intervals.

There are many products that are rated very good or excellent for stripe rust control (<a href="http://www.bookstore.ksre.ksu.edu/pubs/EP130.pdf">http://www.bookstore.ksre.ksu.edu/pubs/EP130.pdf</a>), but it is important to know that fungicides in the strobilurin family (Group 11) are not as effective when applied as single product after symptoms have already appeared.

The products listed in the K-State fungicide efficacy publication will generally provide at least 14-21 days of protection. This can vary between products and is also influenced by environmental conditions.&nbsp;

The decision to apply a fungicide should be balanced with the yield potential of the crop, variety disease rating and current grain price. Fields with the potential to yield greater than 40 bushels per acre should be prioritized for a fungicide application.

CAMPBELL: Stripe rust update

This week, Hays High School presents the musical Rent: School Edition.

 HHS typically produces its musical in the fall, but in an effort to navigate the pandemic, decided to push the production to the tail end of the school year.

The show was cast the week before spring break, and students have been in rehearsal for the last seven weeks. The musical will open to the public at 7:30 tonight at the Twelfth Street Auditorium, 323 W. 12th St., in Hays. 

Subsequent performances will be at 7:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 2 p.m. Sunday all at Twelfth Street Auditorium.

Rent revolutionized the Broadway landscape when it opened in the mid 1990s. Based on Puccini’s famous opera, La Boheme, Rent follows a similar plot and character structure.&nbsp;Boheme is based in late 19th Century Paris during a tuberculosis outbreak where the cast of starving artists find love, joy and heartbreak.

Rent is set in New York City’s East Village in the early 1990s at the height of the AIDS crisis. These grungy squatters are indie film makers, songwriters, performance artists, and philosophers who suffer disease, find love, struggle with addiction, fight for artistic pursuits, and above all: support each other.

Collectively, the eight seniors have been accepted to the University of Michigan, Princeton University, Harvard University, University of Southern California, Mahidol University in Thailand, Duke University, Oklahoma City University, and schools in Kansas, including Wichita State, Kansas State, and Fort Hays State.“I like to think of them as their own crew of film-maker, performance artist, drag queen, philosophers,"&nbsp;Underwood said. "They are a simply remarkable group, and it has been so rewarding to get to work with them these past three years.
