After just two days a painting depicting a larger-than-life image of a bison has appeared on the side of the S&amp;W Supply building at Eighth and Allen streets in Hays.

Hays Artist Dennis Schiel is painting the first in what local officials hope will be eight to 10 downtown murals in two years. The project has been dubbed <a href="https://www.facebook.com/brushthebricks/">Brush the Bricks</a>.&nbsp;

The murals will take several different forms. Some will be painted by professional artists like Schiel. Some of the murals will be metal. Some of them will include community involvement in the painting process.

"We also want this project to honor the artist who are also legends in Hays — the Pete Feltens and the John Codys and more," said Sara Bloom, director of the Downton Hays Development Corp.

Felten is known for his limestone sculptures that already grace downtown. John Cody was a local psychiatrist and known for his beautiful, detailed paintings of moths.

The project is hoping to do 12 framed vinyl art pieces to depict these artists' works, Bloom said.

Schiel's first mural is titled "The Three Amigos." It will depict the three figures of the Old West that made Hays famous, Buffalo Bill Cody, Wild Bill Hickok and Gen. George Custer.&nbsp;

The mural was originally designed for the Sternberg water tower, but that project was nixed by the Hays City Commission. He said he anticipates he will complete the mural some time in August.

Schiel also will be painting a mural on the Arc of the Central Plains building at 600 Main St. starting in September. The mural will depict Special Olympics athletes.

"I am hoping to depict the thrill they get out of participating," Schiel said.&nbsp;

A second mural on the Arc building will be created by individuals in the community with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

"The art downtown is just the start," Schiel said. "I would like to see it create a great interest in the arts by the community, not just downtown. We are looking at doing some projects outside of downtown."

Schiel plans a fourth, "Welcome to Hays" mural on the side of the former Good Book Store building at 11th and Main streets.

Eventually Schiel, who helped with the fundraising on the mural project, said he would like to see an endowment for the arts created to benefit Hays and the surrounding area.

"When I was trying to get the tower started, my goal was to really have something for people to come in and see," he said.&nbsp;

Melissa Dixon, director of the Hays Conventions &amp; Visitors Bureau, said she hopes people will choose to stop in Hays and come downtown to see the murals.

"I feel a mural is its own little attraction," she said. "It turns that building into a tourist destination. ... I think Hays is already known for having a strong and vibrant art community, and this makes it even better."

Hays artist Matt Miller will be painting an abstract mural starting this fall. However, the location of that mural has not been determined.

An oriental dragon is planned for the side of the Sake2Me building, 803 Fort St. The artist has yet to be chosen for that project.

Time lapse cameras are going to be installed at the sites of the murals while they are being composed.

A mural painted by the community will be on the side of the Midland Marketing building. That project is set for summer 2022.

Bloom said project organizers are interested in community members submitting ideas for murals, as well as suggestions on buildings on which they think they should be placed.

The project is a partnership between the DHDC, the Hays Arts Council and the Hays Convention &amp; Visitors Bureau. Schiel is not only painting murals for the project, but has assisted in fundraising and will assist in the installation of the metal and vinyl murals. Fort Hays State University is also a partner.

The project is being funded through donations and grants. The DHDC has already raised $90,000 toward its $150,000 goal. Murals will be painted or installed as they are funded.

 </figure>Correction 9:05 a.m. Wednesday: The "Three Amigos" mural is being painted on the side of the S&amp;W Supply building in Hays.By CRISTINA JANNEY Hays PostAfter just two days a painting depicting a larger-than-life image of a bison has appeared on the side of the S&amp;W Supply building at Eighth and Allen streets in Hays.Hays Artist Dennis Schiel is painting the first in what local officials hope will be eight to 10 downtown murals in two years. The project has been dubbed <a href="https://www.facebook.com/brushthebricks/">Brush the Bricks</a>.&nbsp;The murals will take several different forms. Some will be painted by professional artists like Schiel. Some of the murals will be metal. Some of them will include community involvement in the painting process."We also want this project to honor the artist who are also legends in Hays — the Pete Feltens and the John Codys and more," said Sara Bloom, director of the Downton Hays Development Corp.Felten is known for his limestone sculptures that already grace downtown. John Cody was a local psychiatrist and known for his beautiful, detailed paintings of moths.The project is hoping to do 12 framed vinyl art pieces to depict these artists' works, Bloom said.<figure>

 </figure>Schiel's first mural is titled "The Three Amigos." It will depict the three figures of the Old West that made Hays famous, Buffalo Bill Cody, Wild Bill Hickok and Gen. George Custer.&nbsp;The mural was originally designed for the Sternberg water tower, but that project was nixed by the Hays City Commission. He said he anticipates he will complete the mural some time in August.Schiel also will be painting a mural on the Arc of the Central Plains building at 600 Main St. starting in September. The mural will depict Special Olympics athletes."I am hoping to depict the thrill they get out of participating," Schiel said.&nbsp;A second mural on the Arc building will be created by individuals in the community with intellectual and developmental disabilities."The art downtown is just the start," Schiel said. "I would like to see it create a great interest in the arts by the community, not just downtown. We are looking at doing some projects outside of downtown."Schiel plans a fourth, "Welcome to Hays" mural on the side of the former Good Book Store building at 11th and Main streets.Eventually Schiel, who helped with the fundraising on the mural project, said he would like to see an endowment for the arts created to benefit Hays and the surrounding area."When I was trying to get the tower started, my goal was to really have something for people to come in and see," he said.&nbsp;Melissa Dixon, director of the Hays Conventions &amp; Visitors Bureau, said she hopes people will choose to stop in Hays and come downtown to see the murals."I feel a mural is its own little attraction," she said. "It turns that building into a tourist destination. ... I think Hays is already known for having a strong and vibrant art community, and this makes it even better."Hays artist Matt Miller will be painting an abstract mural starting this fall. However, the location of that mural has not been determined.An oriental dragon is planned for the side of the Sake2Me building, 803 Fort St. The artist has yet to be chosen for that project.Time lapse cameras are going to be installed at the sites of the murals while they are being composed.A mural painted by the community will be on the side of the Midland Marketing building. Fort Hays State University is also a partner.The project is being funded through donations and grants. The DHDC has already raised $90,000 toward its $150,000 goal. July is a special month for many Americans.&nbsp; Most of us will eagerly take a break from our busy summer schedules to once again celebrate Independence Day.&nbsp; There will be much fanfare with fireworks, parades, picnics, and other patriotic events celebrating our country’s independence from Great Britain in 1776.&nbsp; But when the festivities have ended, only a few will have reflected upon the true meaning of independence and the role it has played in shaping our nation’s character.

Our founding fathers made it clear in the Declaration of Independence that all men were entitled to certain unalienable rights.&nbsp; Among those rights are life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.&nbsp; It is easy to take for granted those rights and freedoms we share as Americans.&nbsp; However, it is important that we understand and appreciate the hard work and sacrifice that our forefathers made in order for us to enjoy the luxury of freedom.&nbsp; Freedom and independence are cornerstones in the foundation of our country’s heritage.&nbsp; The independent ideology of the American people is a fundamental element of our society and a key to our nation’s prosperity.&nbsp; We must protect that independence at all cost.

One important freedom we must protect is our free enterprise system.&nbsp; American business, and certainly the oil and gas industry, was founded upon the ideology of independence and free-market principles.&nbsp; Those principles allow business to be governed by the laws of supply and demand without government interference and excessive regulation.&nbsp; The dynamic free market has led to innovation and wealth creation, and has established an economic environment where hard work is rewarded.

But now, it seems free-market capitalism and independence is under attack.&nbsp; Environmental activists work to obstruct energy development and infrastructure projects, reducing our energy options under a false belief that oil and natural gas production and use are incompatible with environmental progress. &nbsp;

The U.S. continues on a path toward one of the greatest self-inflicted wounds in history.&nbsp; President Biden has adopted liberal climate change priorities calling for an end to fossil fuel production and use and a restoration of the failed energy policies of the Obama-era.&nbsp; Biden’s anti-fossil fuel barrage will have no effect on the climate as global demand for fossil fuels will continue to increase for decades no matter what the U.S. does.&nbsp; Meantime, Russia, China, and Iran will take advantage of America’s astonishing fossil-fuel retreat.

The Biden Administration’s energy policy errors are oblivious to the needs of low-income families who would be hurt the most by these misguided energy policies.&nbsp; Biden’s plans are out-of-touch with working people and the economy. &nbsp;

What Biden’s anti-energy agenda combined with climate proposals like the Green New Deal do is concentrate more power in the hands of the federal government and central planners, which at the end of the day, is what they want.&nbsp; We should use our energy abundance to lift people up, which is a different philosophy than a zero-emissions world.&nbsp;

Contrary to claims from environmental activists, cutting U.S. oil and natural gas production would not magically reduce world energy demand.&nbsp; But it could raise costs significantly for American families and manufacturers, profoundly damage the U.S. economy, diminish our geopolitical influence and severely weaken our energy security.&nbsp; That’s where environmental activists strategies lead, and it is not a path most Americans want to take.

In his 1946 Independence Day speech, John F. Kennedy said, “Eternal vigilance is the price of liberty.”&nbsp; Those words were never so true.&nbsp; Being mindful of the erosion of our independence and free-market system by misguided environmental activist ideologies cannot be over emphasized.&nbsp; We must, now more than ever, remain steadfast in our resolve to protect and preserve the precious independence that has molded our nation’s character.

CROSS: Protecting our independence

By KIM BALDWIN McPherson County farmer It’s wheat harvest time in central Kansas! I always know harvest will arrive, but it also always seems to sneak up on me. This year it seems to have snuck up a bit more than usual as we are still catching up from dealing with our wicked weather from a month ago. &nbsp; We are still replanting fields damaged by hail or flooded by rain. Our days leading up to this year’s harvest have included the regular preparation for summer and harvest, as well as a lot of unanticipated extras.&nbsp; &nbsp; Extra time has been needed in the fields replanting, spraying and cultivating while also dealing with insurance claims, adjustors, contractors, windshield repairs, dent repairs and a roofing crew. There’s definitely been a lot of those unexpected extras this year leading up to summer harvest.&nbsp; &nbsp; Thankfully, we have wonderful helpers who have been able to assist with the needed annual tasks that must be done prior to and during harvest. From preparing irrigation, laying pipe, servicing the tractors, trucks and combines, helping with irrigation repairs, cutting wheat and delivering the grain, we have a great group of people helping us. &nbsp; I realized a few days ago this is the first year in a very long time that I do not have a personal helper of my own this summer. Normally I would have a teenage girl helping me with the kids and household chores during the summer months. I called these helpers my “right-hand gals” because the job wasn’t just babysitting. &nbsp; In the past, I’d be able to leave the kids with my helper when I’d need to quickly drive out to a field to shuttle equipment or crew members to another location. Sometimes I would need to drive to another town to get machine parts. It was wonderful to have a helper who I could leave in charge of the house and kids to be able to complete all the necessary and unscheduled tasks associated with summer and harvest. &nbsp; My helper’s main role was to keep the day moving forward whether I was at home with the kids or not. At times, the job would require prepping food or baking cookies for our harvest crew. Sometimes it entailed loading and unloading the dishwasher or the laundry. Sometimes it meant reading books to the kids, making sure they were put down for their scheduled naps or lifeguarding when the kids would take an afternoon dip in our stock tank pool. &nbsp; Having a “right-hand gal” helped keep the kids rested and on a schedule. Summer on the farm and wheat harvest is incredibly exciting to participate in, but it’s also tiring for everyone involved. Between the hot, dry winds constantly blowing, and the long days and nights of work, it’s understandable why adults might — on occasion — get cranky. I’m sure one can imagine how the intense harvest schedule would affect a child if not properly rested!&nbsp; &nbsp; But as in all of life, this year I am reminded that seasons continually change, and my right-hand gals are grown and gone. My son has transitioned to helping more on the farm this summer. He’s now shadowing his daddy and grandpa, helping the men service machines by handing them tools, riding in the combine and helping with irrigation. I no longer fill a sippy cup and strap him into his car seat. Instead, he fills his own water jug daily and is doing his part helping with summer tasks on the farm under the supervision of some pretty patient people. &nbsp; My daughter is now another little helper. She’s transitioned to helping with laundry and baking cookies with her grandma. Now, whenever I have to jump in a vehicle to complete a pressing task, my little assistant is usually with me. Most of the time she’s happy to tag along as long as she has a book or two with her. But sometimes when the day gets tough, the immediate playing of a requested soundtrack and the promise of a frozen drink or popsicle usually helps.&nbsp; Yes, I’ve always been aware and thankful for the wonderful help we have especially during the summer months. This year, I have become acutely more aware of the blessing of helpers — both big and small.

Kansas Farm Bureau Insight: Helpers big and small

MANHATTAN — The Fourth of July may be a fun and noisy celebration for many people, but a Kansas State University veterinarian says that's not the case for some pets. "This holiday is often a time filled with fear and anxiety for some pets — and it can also be a dangerous time for them as well," said&nbsp;<a href="https://www.vet.k-state.edu/education/clinical-sciences/faculty-staff/faculty/nelson/index.html" target="_blank">Susan Nelson</a>, clinical professor at the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.vet.k-state.edu/vhc/" target="_blank">K-State Veterinary Health Center</a>, a part of the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.vet.k-state.edu/" target="_blank">College of Veterinary Medicine</a>. "It is best to speak to your veterinarian now about medication options if needed, especially since the majority of fireworks will be set off over the weekend this year when your veterinarian’s office will likely be closed." Nelson offers some tips to help keep pets safe this holiday. The first: Keep your pet indoors for the most part, and under leash control when you do need to take them outside. "The sound of fireworks can make some pets run off in an attempt to get away from the noise," Nelson said. "In fact, this is the time of year with the highest incidence of runaway pets, so be sure to keep them secure." Besides getting lost, Nelson said there is also the risk of pets getting hit by a car because their fear of fireworks will make them less observant of oncoming traffic. She recommends making sure your pet has some type of ID, such as a tag and/or microchip, in case it should get lost. Ideally, it should have both. Nelson said keeping your pet inside also keeps it safe from those people who may try to harm an animal with fireworks. "Many dogs will appreciate being in the safe confines of their crate and will do fine if allowed to stay there," Nelson said. "A secure room may also work as well. Be sure to close the blinds or use heavy curtains to block out the flashes of light." Nelson also suggests the following to help calm a pet who gets rattled by loud noises: • Play soothing music or turn on the TV or white noise machine in an attempt to block out the loud crackles and booms. • Trying an anxiety wrap specially made for pets may help calm those with mild anxiety. • Using over-the-counter medications made for anxious pets may benefit those with mild to moderate noise anxiety. • Consider temporarily relocating your pet to a quieter friend/relative's house or kennel during this time. • Talk to your veterinarian about prescription anti-anxiety medications if your pet has a severe noise phobia.&nbsp;Several different medications are available to help treat anxiety due to loud noises. Have the medication ready to give on the first day that fireworks are allowed to begin in your community. Just as with young children, Nelson said it is important to keep dangerous items out of your pet's reach and not apply products on pets that aren't labeled for safe use on them. "These include lighters, punks, matches, lighter fluid, glow jewelry, citronella candles/oils, insect coils and repellants and fireworks, both unlit and lit," Nelson said. Even if your dog is not bothered by fireworks, Nelson said it is still subject to being burned or injured by fireworks if it gets too close or attempts to retrieve one that has been ignited. Many fireworks also contain toxic chemicals if ingested. Another product to avoid using on pets can be some insect repellants, Nelson said. "Mosquitoes are often out in force this time of year, but don't be tempted to spray your pet with insect repellants that contain DEET as it is toxic for them," she said. "Only apply insect repellants that state they are safe to use on pets." Human foods and beverages also pose dangers to pets. "Pets often experience vomiting and/or diarrhea when given foods they are not used to eating," Nelson said. "And some foods, such as chocolate, macadamia nuts, onions, grapes or raisins, coffee, salt and yeast-based bread dough are all potentially toxic for your pet." When ingested, fatty foods can lead to life-threatening pancreatitis, while corncobs, bones and wooden barbeque skewers can cause blockage of the intestinal tract if swallowed. Nelson also said to keep any foods or candies sweetened with artificial sweeteners, such as xylitol, out of reach as they can be toxic to pets. Another no-no for pets is alcoholic beverages. "Keep the beer and wine out of their reach," Nelson said.&nbsp; &nbsp;

"These include lighters, punks, matches, lighter fluid, glow jewelry, citronella candles/oils, insect coils and repellants and fireworks, both unlit and lit," Nelson said. Even if your dog is not bothered by fireworks, Nelson said it is still subject to being burned or injured by fireworks if it gets too close or attempts to retrieve one that has been ignited. Many fireworks also contain toxic chemicals if ingested. Another product to avoid using on pets can be some insect repellants, Nelson said. "Mosquitoes are often out in force this time of year, but don't be tempted to spray your pet with insect repellants that contain DEET as it is toxic for them," she said. "Only apply insect repellants that state they are safe to use on pets." Human foods and beverages also pose dangers to pets. "Pets often experience vomiting and/or diarrhea when given foods they are not used to eating," Nelson said. "And some foods, such as chocolate, macadamia nuts, onions, grapes or raisins, coffee, salt and yeast-based bread dough are all potentially toxic for your pet." When ingested, fatty foods can lead to life-threatening pancreatitis, while corncobs, bones and wooden barbeque skewers can cause blockage of the intestinal tract if swallowed. Nelson also said to keep any foods or candies sweetened with artificial sweeteners, such as xylitol, out of reach as they can be toxic to pets. Another no-no for pets is alcoholic beverages. "Keep the beer and wine out of their reach," Nelson said.&nbsp; &nbsp;

The weather is hot and harvest is in full swing. That can only mean one thing: Fair Time is here. Don’t let the heat keep you from enjoying some of the activities scheduled during the next few weeks, at both the Barton and Ellis County Fairs. There are several things you can do to stay hydrated as the temperature climbs. Drinking at least eight cups of fluid a day is recommended under normal circumstances and more is needed as summer temperatures and humidity rise. Sometimes we forget that 55-75 percent of our body’s weight is water; the brain is 70 percent water; blood is 82 percent water, and the lungs are nearly 90 percent water. Water is also responsible for carrying nutrients and oxygen to cells; cushions organs, tissue, bones and joints; removes waste; and regulates body temperature.

Exposure to the sun or getting sunburned will speed fluid loss, and so will drinking beverages containing caffeine or alcohol, which both act as diuretics. Fluid replacement is essential, but it is best to not wait until you are thirsty. Excessive water loss or dehydration can impair body function and lead to heat exhaustion or heat stroke and can be life threatening. It is a good idea to become familiar with the signs of heat exhaustion. They include: dizziness, weakness, feeling thirsty, uncoordinated or nauseated. Most people sweat a lot during heat exhaustion. The signs of a heat stroke are different. They include: a body temperature of 104 or above, confusion, staggering, possible fainting, either a rapid pulse or a slow weak pulse, and not sweating, despite the heat. It is important to get medical help right away if you suspect a heat stroke.

Cool water is recommended for the majority of fluid replacement because it is easily absorbed. Many foods also have a high-water content and should be included in a healthy summer diet. Melons and most other fruits, along with tomatoes, vegetables, soups, smoothies, puddings and gelatin salads should not be overlooked. Sports beverages may be helpful for athletes who are exercising more than one hour and are in need of electrolytes and quick energy, but consider diluting them with water in order to reduce sugar intake.&nbsp;

The bottom line on staying hydrated is to drink fluids before you become thirsty. As we age our ability to sense thirst declines, leaving older people unable to rely on their thirst to prompt them to drink enough fluids. Infants and small children also need to be monitored closely to assure that dehydration does not occur. Little ones lose more fluids because they have a greater proportion of skin surface in relation to their size. Offer water frequently, each time a child passes through the kitchen and before, during and after play.

Let’s hope that the summer of 2021 does not show up in the record books!

A new dog groomer in Hay seeks to add a little color to the life of you and your pet.&nbsp;

Kayla Reese of Doggone Cute uses semi-permanent hair dye to create all sorts of designs in dogs' fur.

On dogs that don't require haircuts, the dye will last up to six months. On dogs that require regular cuts, the hair will grow out more quickly.

The dyes are vegan, fruit based and non-toxic to animals. They contain no ammonia or hydrogen peroxide. Reese often uses hair dye meant for humans as it is easier to get shipped than the dye made specially for animals.

She said she sees grooming as a form of art.

Her own dog, Dodger, is a beige German shepherd mix and she regularly uses orange and black dye to transform Dodger into a fox.

"When I have this guy turned into a fox, everyone thinks he's the cutest thing," Reese said. "They want to come over from way across the block and give him attention.&nbsp;

"When I do the color, it's a little bit of a bonding thing too."

Dodger doesn't seem to mind. Reese brushes on the color just as she would with a human, lets it set and then rinses it out in warm bath, which Dodger seems to really enjoy, she said.

"Dogs are dogs," she said. "They don't really care what they look like. It's just really kind of fun.

"If the dogs are good for grooming, they&nbsp; just sit here and let them do whatever you want to them anyway. It gets them more attention. They like that too."

Reese, 30, has been a groomer for nine years. She opened a storefront June 7 at 810 Main in Hays.

"I've always loved animals and wanted to do something with animals," she said. "I looked into being a vet, but I didn't think I could deal with putting the dogs down myself and dealing with all the injuries."

Reese provides a full line of grooming services, including, bath, brush, cuts, teeth brushing and nails.

Keeping up with grooming keeps tangles out of pets' fur. Keeping nails short helps keep from pushing the dogs' toes at weird angles. If nails get too long, it causes problems with how the dog's foot sits. This can cause problems with the way they walk and worsen issues with arthritis.&nbsp;

Nail care is important for indoor and outdoor dogs, as dogs that are on grass also will not naturally wear down their nails like a wild canine would.&nbsp;

She is still doing some remodeling to her space and hopes to add retail sales of grooming supplies, such as combs and brushes, and other dog supplies, such as leashes.

Reese said she looks forward to operating downtown, with the increased foot traffic. She also lives just a few blocks from the shop, which makes it a convenient commute.&nbsp;

Nymex benchmark crude futures settled over $74 Friday, but dropped more than a dollar by lunchtime Monday. The near-month contract for light sweet crude was trading at $72.79 per barrel. Kansas crude prices gained another 75 cents on Friday. Kansas Common crude at CHS in McPherson starts the week at $64.25 per barrel. That's up more than four dollars a barrel from the first of the month and more than $25 higher than prices at the first of the year. Operators in Kansas completed seven new wells last week. Independent Oil &amp; Gas Service says there were three in eastern Kansas and four west of Wichita. That brings the total so far this year to 358 completed wells. Kansas regulators okayed 51 new drilling permits for the week, 28 east of Wichita, 23 in Western Kansas, and 467 so far this year. There are two new permits in Barton County and four in Ellis County. Baker Hughes reported 470 active drilling rigs across the U.S. The aggregate count is unchanged, with an increase of one gas rig offsetting a decline of one rig drilling for oil. Independent Oil &amp; Gas Service reports a slight increase in the Rig Count in Kansas. There are seven drilling rigs at work in eastern Kansas, which is up three for the week. West of Wichita the count dropped by one, to 22 active rigs. US crude inventories dropped for the fifth week in a row. The Energy Information Administration reports US stockpiles dropped 7.6 million barrels to just below 460 million. EIA says inventories are about six percent below the five-year average for this time of year. US Crude production dropped slightly last week but remains above 11 million barrels per day for a second week in a row. Output reached 11,145,000 barrels per day for the week ending June 18. That's down 101,000 barrels per day from the week before, but is nearly 200,000 barrels ahead of the same week a year ago.&nbsp; The government reported a slight increase in US crude imports last week, to 6.9 million barrels per day. Average imports over the past four weeks are slightly lower than the same period last year. Crude oil in storage at Cushing, Oklahoma reached its lowest percentage of capacity since March of 2020 according to the latest government report. Analysis published by Bloomberg News suggests another round of rising prices could be on the way if inventories continue to drop. Crude stockpiles in the storage hub at Cushing, Oklahoma are falling to historic lows, thanks to a surge in demand outpacing crude production. Cushing inventories fell nearly 4 million barrels in the last two weeks to their lowest level since the pandemic forced the country into lockdown. U.S. shale production is still 15% below its pre-pandemic peak and imports from Canada are running low, fueling a growing consensus that prices are set to surge again. The Oklahoma Corporation Commission last week elected Commissioner Dana Murphy as Chairman, effective July 1. According to an OCC news release, Commissioner Murphy is a 5th generation Oklahoman, a geologist, and an attorney. Prior to taking office as a Commissioner she served as a Commission administrative law judge in addition to working as geologist and attorney in the private sector. Murphy has been a Commissioner since January 2009 and was elected to her latest term in 2016. This will be Murphy’s third term as Chairman. The Commissioners also elected Commissioner Bob Anthony as vice chairman. Anthony first took office in January 1989. Oklahoma Corporation Commissioners hold statewide elected office, and are now limited to two six-year terms. The Oklahoma Corporation Commission oversees the state’s energy, transportation and utility sectors. According to a new government report, the State of New Mexico pumped it's best total crude oil and natural gas output ever. Total crude output in New Mexico reached nearly 36-million barrels in March, making it the number-two producing state in the country, outpacing North Dakota by more than 128,000 barrels per day. According to EIA's latest totals, Kansas produced nearly 2.4 million barrels in March, or nearly 77,000 barrels per day. New Mexico set a milestone in oil-patch regulation recently. For the first time regulators there have made it illegal for drillers to spill oil, saltwater or other oil-field liquids. Up until a couple of weeks ago, it wasn't against the law. Industry representatives told the commission that leeway should be given to operators who sustain spills because of weather events, vandalism, equipment breakdowns and other things beyond their control. Critics argued that the previous rules were inadequate and relied on an honor system that many operators violated. Regulators approved the new rules by unanimous vote.&nbsp; Oil-by-rail traffic across the U.S. was down for the week but nearly four percent higher than a year ago. The Association of American Railroads report 9,785 tanker cars hauling petroleum or petroleum products during the week ended June 19. The Canada Energy Regulator is now allowing Trans Mountain Corp. to resume work on its oil pipeline expansion project. The company hopes to nearly triple the amount of heavy crude it moves from the oilfields of Alberta to Canada's Pacific Coast. A court-order protecting hummingbird nests in British Columbia shut down work on the project in April. The $10 billion expansion will pump up capacity to 890,000 barrels per day. The company expects to complete the expansion project late next year.

Right now,&nbsp;the Red Cross is working around the clock to provide blood products to hospitals&nbsp;responding to an&nbsp;unusually&nbsp;high number of traumas and emergency room visits, as well as overdoses and resulting transplants.&nbsp;As a result of the blood shortage, some hospitals are being forced to slow the pace of elective surgeries until the blood supply stabilizes, delaying crucial patient care.&nbsp;&nbsp;

In addition, while summer is traditionally a time when blood donations decline, this year is particularly challenging as many Americans&nbsp;receive their vaccinations and resume summer activities after more than a year of limited interactions and travel, leading to lower donor turnout. Red Cross still facing severe blood shortage 

We have been receiving numerous reports of brown patch showing up on tall fescue. This disease is favored by warm night temperatures and extended periods of leaf wetness. If you go outside in the morning and the lawn is covered with dew and the temperature is in the high 60s or higher, it means that conditions are getting right for brown patch. The fungus is primarily a leaf pathogen and does not attack the roots. During severe outbreaks, the fungus may invade the lower leaf sheaths and crown and kill plants. But in most cases, the turfgrass can recover from brown patch. This recovery may take two to three weeks, depending on weather. There is no way to eliminate brown patch from a lawn. It will persist indefinitely in the soil. Therefore, the disease is not carried from one lawn to another. In almost all cases, the limiting factor for brown patch development is the weather, not the amount of fungal inoculum. Although you can’t eliminate the fungus, cultural practices – especially irrigation – can help control it. Don't water in the evening; instead, water early in the morning. This will help decrease the number of hours the leaf tissue remains wet and susceptible to infection.

The frequency of irrigation is not as important as the time of day you do it. Don't overfertilize and certainly don't fertilize when brown patch is active. Also, don't allow your seeding or overseeding rates to become too high.&nbsp;Fungicides can be effective in preventing brown patch, but the two most commonly used products (Heritage and ProStar) are expensive and not available in small quantities to the general public. Homeowners do have access to some effective products including triadimefon (Green Light Fung-Away), propiconazole (BioAdvanced Fungus Control for Lawns, Fertilome Liquid Systemic Fungicide II) and myclobutanil (Immunox, F-Stop Lawn &amp; Garden). Of the three, triadimefon may be the fungicide of choice because it protects the turf longer (3 to 5 weeks rather than 2 weeks). 

But my suggestion is not to use fungicides unless you want to maintain a blemish-free yard and are willing to pay for it. In those cases, you would need to be on a preventative spray program, which is very expensive, rather than waiting for symptoms and applying as a curative. These products do not cure an infection already present but are only effective as a preventative. Applications should begin in mid-June and continue through August. Often tall fescue lawns will recover from brown patch but infections this year seem more severe than usual and may require overseeding this fall.

The Kansas Department of Health and Environment on Monday reported one new COVID-19 case in Ellis County had been identified since Friday — the first new case reported since June 16.

KDHE: First new virus case since June 16 ID'd in Ellis Co.

A new program in Ellis County seeks to provide seniors improved access to fresh produce while fostering local producers that sell at farmer's markets.

After being offered in eastern Kansas towns, the Kansas Senior Farmers Market Nutrition Program is now available to Ellis County low-income residents over 60 years of age.

The program is coordinated through the Kansas Department of Health and Environment and administered in Ellis County by the Cottonwood Extension District, 601 Main.

"This year they wanted to branch out and find a larger farmers market they could try it in," said Cottonwood Extension District agent Berny Unruh.

Funding for the program is provided by a federal grant.

"The idea is not only to provide seniors with fruit and vegetables but to promote or support our local farmers," Unruh said.

Unruh said with the price of fresh fruit and vegetables, many seniors living with tight incomes, may be hesitant to purchase the higher cost produce over lower-cost food options.

"They will live a lot longer if they have fresh fruits and vegetables, in their diet," Unruh said.

Those health concerns brought on by a lack of proper nutrition she said can sneak up on seniors and cause a variety of health problems.

"Oftentimes, when those things do start happening, whether it is diabetes, high blood pressure or cholesterol, that is not something that they notice right away, and they don't get it checked, and then their health can decline very quickly," Unruh said.

The signup process is straightforward and can be done quickly in the Cottonwood Extension District office.

"It's two pages," Unruh said. "And we will ask those very simple questions about age and income."

Those seniors who qualify will be given a booklet with seven $5 checks that can then be used at authorized farmers' market vendors.

Those vendors will have signs indicating they are a part of the program.

Unruh said she is hopeful area seniors will take advantage of the program.

"They should not be afraid to come and know that there are things that they might be able to afford," she said.

by conservative leader and former state Rep. Peggy Mast, it was
unlikely anyone’s’ mind was going to be changed.

Across from the venue, a young, diverse crowd standing up to what they perceived as intolerance crowded across the sidewalk as a mostly senior white crowd
arrived to attend the event.

The protestors outnumbered attendees at least 2-to-1, displaying
a variety of signs and loudly chanting “Love not Hate” as supporters drove by
honking and cheering in recognition of the efforts.

Anniston Weber helped notify people about the event via social media, helping create the protest turnout.

“A group of us noticed that there was an event going on at
the Fox, primarily targeting Islam and Muslims,” Weber said. “And we have Muslim
students here, we have a Muslim community here, and they deserve to feel just as
welcome as everybody else here.”

She said Mast's notoriety also drew attention to
the event. 

“The speaker has been known to make homophobic, racist, even
sexist remarks and you know, we don’t need that. … We don’t need bigotry, we don’t
need hate, and Hays is better than that,” Weber said.

Despite the billing, during the event attendees heard Mast share a list of perceived threats to the country from groups like Black
Lives Matter, Antifa, the Council on American-Islamic Relations, communists and
socialists.

During the over two-hour presentation, Mast also spoke about a
variety of conservative
conspiracy theories about COVID-19, global warming and the federal
government moving to control more than they should.

Following her presentation, Mast took audience questions. With
the divisiveness in the room evident from the outset as a young woma, became
frustrated when Mast failed to answer in a way she felt was appropriate.

“She knew she wasn’t going to get an answer,” said a born-and-raised Hays citizen who asked to be identified as Doug Jones, who asked the
next question. “I knew I wasn’t going to get an answer. The point is to ask the
question.”

He asked Mast if it responsible to spread fear with conjecture.

“Through the whole thing, she responded as if there was only
one piece of conjecture, but throughout the whole thing she was making claims
that were unsubstantiated and making generalizations about cultures, making
generalizations about countries and peoples, blaming for this, that and the
other thing,” Jones said.

“And she didn’t answer my question.”

But he didn’t really expect her to, he said.

After Mast avoided the question, audience members started
yelling toward each other, until Jones asked the crowd to move on and listen to
the presenter.

Afterward, he said he felt Mast had presented disjointed ideas,
pushed into a vague idea of an enemy.

“I think people are really scared and I think everybody
wants somebody to blame,” Jones said. “And this whole talk was sort of an
expression of that.

“It was a very chaotic jumble of ‘this person is to blame’
and ‘these people and this person are working together to dismantle the
American ideal.’ ” 

That ideal is based on the existing power structure that is
being perceived as threatened, he said.

“That power structure is white male-dominated that is being
threatened by people from other countries, people from other cultures and stuff,”
he said. “Their ideas are new, foreign and scary.”

ideas, he said he believes it’s a natural response to the growing complexity of

to share relevant information.He spoke with Mast after the event ended and asked about her concerns
about Islam, noting the event was billed as a discussion on that topic, but it
was not discussed.“And she preceded to tell me her views about Sharia law and nothing
that I disagree with,” he said.“She was talking about how it was a very suppressive set of views
and that she doesn’t support it. Very fair. I think if her talk was about
Sharia law there would be a lot less problematic things on in it, but she was
all over the place.”But his critique of the lack of an organized message extended
to both sides.“The same thing could be said for this protest,” he said,
pointing to the diverse subjects displayed on the protestors’ signs. “It’s
scattered, disorganized.<figure>

 </figure>“On both sides, the protest and the event, no one knows what
they are really standing for I think. I think it is just people want to be
riled up.”A lack of understanding — and more, a lack of the desire to
understand — underpins the messaging of both groups, he said. “The people out here probably dislike the people in there a
lot more than the people that went in,” he said, noting only a few of the group
of protestors came into the venue. “We were right face to face with them,
sitting in the same room and nobody was super disrespectful to each other.”Weber said only “one or two” of the protestors she knew of
were planning on going inside. She would not be one of them.“Personally, I don’t think I could stomach it,” Weber said. “After
reading articles and watching interviews with her in the past, I don’t think I
could excuse or condone somebody that quotes Hitler unironically.”“I think when people are separated from their enemy, they’re
more likely to get upset at them,” Jones said. “I think that if you have a
conversation with your enemy, you are probably going to see that they are a
human being and they deserve respect and they probably have some good points.”He wished more people had conversations with those that share different opinions and world views.“Both sides — they don’t know what the person believes, because
they fear somewhere inside themselves, that if they really gave it a shot — if
they really gave the other person a chance — they might be brainwashed.”But he said his beliefs did not change, just from hearing another
