GREAT BEND — A little less talk and a lot more action. That’s the thought for Great
Bend’s first “Damn it, Do it Day!” on Saturday. A community effort will help
make a section of Great Bend a better place to live by giving the block an
exterior makeover. 

Sara Hayden, one of the coordinators, says the group identified the
900 block of Jefferson Street as their first project to spruce up. 
"There are some really great people on this block," said Hayden. "You 
never know what caused people to get where they are at with their 
houses. Different things in life may have made them unable to keep up 
with their homes. We can start to make a difference and do that for 
them." 
Work on the block will be from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. with a celebratory block party
to follow. There will be five to six houses on the block where volunteers will handle
projects like mowing, trimming, painting, putting up fence and planting
flowers. Sponsors Brentwood Builders and Justin In Time Remodeling will be
handling larger exterior projects during the same time.

Fairchild hopes the initiative will help inspire constant improvement and pride
within the community. "We're pushing one big day but this is 
about mindset," said Fairchild. "We want people to look at things more 
positively. If you're walking downtown and see a piece of trash...damn 
it, pick it up. We want to help build more civic pride and get people 
proud of Great Bend."

HUTCHINSON — 
As spring turns to summer, gas prices are rising.

"Here in Kansas,
 we rose five cents over the past week," said Shawn Steward with AAA 
Kansas. "We're now at an average of $2.86 a gallon. The good news is, 
we're 20 cents less than the national average and we're 10th cheapest in
 the United States."

"We've seen a recent drop in demand after the 
Memorial Day weekend,"&nbsp;Steward said. 

Supplies are also getting more robust with 
refinery utilization at a high level. It's also looking like crude oil 
prices may drop soon.

"OPEC and its allies, including Russia, 
announced last week that they plan to gradually increase crude 
production in July," Steward said. "This could lead to a decrease in 
crude oil prices."

Crude oil accounts for more than 50% of the price at the pump.

Ellis County Drug Court graduation set for next week

The Kansas Department of Health and Environment on Wednesday reported one new COVID-19 case in Ellis County had been identified since Monday.

KDHE also reported an additional coronavirus-related death since Monday.

KDHE: One new virus case, one death in Ellis Co. since Monday

GREAT BEND - The Great Bend Chamber of Commerce, in partnership with the city of Great Bend, will welcome drag racers to town this weekend for Rocky Mountain Race Week. The public is invited to a special welcome event at Jack Kilby Square starting at 4 p.m. Friday.

This family-friendly event will bring together the community with the racers as they kick off their annual race week in Great Bend with races starting Saturday. Drag racers will have vehicles staged around Jack Kilby Square in downtown Great Bend for the public to view.

Chamber President Megan Barfield hopes the community gets involved this race week. 

“We really encourage the community to come and help make Great Bend a memorable and welcoming stop for our out-of-town guests," Barfield said.&nbsp;"They’re driving hundreds of miles along their seven-day race period. Having them start and stop in Great Bend is a huge win for the SRCA Dragstrip.”

The Great Bend Chamber of Commerce and Ambassador Club will also be in the square from 4:00 p.m. - 6:00 p.m. serving popcorn and passing out special race week promo books, while supplies last. Visit with the drivers, check out their cars, welcome the drivers, and then do some downtown shopping while redeeming the special race week-only promos.

The SRCA dragstrip has strong appeal to racers across the country and having this series in Great Bend bodes well for local businesses and hotels. “Most of them (racers) will get here the Friday before the event. We’ll start racing on Saturday and we don’t leave for the next track until Sunday,” said SRCA volunteer and local car enthusiast Chad Ehrlich.

Racers will arrive back in Great Bend on June 18 with many staying overnight in local hotels. Ehrlich added, “We have a great opportunity to show how great Great Bend is, how awesome our track is and the support our racetrack has from the city of the Great Bend which is something a lot of people don’t have.”

Over 250 racers will make the trip to Great Bend for days one and seven of racing at the newly resurfaced SRCA Dragstrip located at 455 W. Barton County Road, Great Bend. 

Races will take place June 12 and again June 18. Spectator tickets are available at the gate for $15 each. Children 12 and under are free. The city of Great Bend acquired the B29 Army Air Force Base from the military after it was declared surplus in 1946. The first race was held May 12, 1953. Sunflower Rod and Custom Association (SRCA) was formed January 19, 1954 and joined NHRA in April 1955.

The Great Bend Chamber of Commerce on behalf of SRCA wrote a letter to Wally Parks requesting that Great Bend, KS be the site for the first national event. NHRA said yes and this race would establish the official acceleration records for stand and start quarter mile racing.

The first nationals started with 219 cars and 15,000 spectators. Art Chrisman ran 146.16 mph and Lloyd Scott set a new speed record for American drag racing at 151 mph. In 1956, the one-year-old AHRA said they would like to have their first National event at Great Bend on the 8,000-foot-long track and did so until 1959. In 1960 the president of AHRA moved the event to Kansas City International Raceway.

The club ran races after that and as time went on they slowly fell away from running the track and disbanded.

 In 1993 the club reorganized and went back to the original name of Sunflower Rod and Custom Association. They did this to help in maintaining the track. It was pursued to have it recognized as a Kansas Historical Site and in 1994 was successful. At the same time the track went back to its original name of SRCA Dragstrip, for which it is registered. The facility is now eligible to be registered nationally.

Great Bend to host Rocky Mountain Racer Week drivers

Stand out above the crowd – in fact, 14 feet above the crowd. What makes this possible? Pole vaulting. Today we will learn about an innovative rural Kansan who is coaching and mentoring young people in pole vaulting and in life.&nbsp;

Doctor Mark Breault (pronounced “bro”) is the founder and operator of Tailwind Pole Vault Club. Mark grew up at Concordia, attended Cloud County Community College and then chiropractic college in Iowa before returning to open a chiropractic practice in his hometown. As a doctor of chiropractic, he became known locally as Doc Bro. He retired in 2014.&nbsp;

“I had pole vaulted in high school,” Doc said. “When my son got into school, there was no coach for that event. My old coach was still the head track coach there, so I volunteered to coach the pole vaulters.”&nbsp;

His coaching responsibilities expanded. “In the first year I coached junior high, the second year I coached junior high and high school, and in the third year I coached junior high, high school, and college,” he said. As his pole vaulters’ success grew, students and families from other schools approached him about coaching them as well.&nbsp;

In 2007, Coach Breault started his own independent pole vault group. Because a good tailwind always helps a pole vaulter, he named it Tailwind Pole Vault Club.&nbsp;

But where could his club have an indoor facility? Pole vaulting is the type of activity which can’t be conducted in your typical storefront building. It requires a long space and high ceiling.&nbsp;

Doc looked around the region and found that the nearby community of Jamestown had a former high school building, including a gymnasium, that was available. “At first they just let me use it for free,” Doc said. “Eventually I bought the building and remodeled it.” Now the facility includes living space where Doc lives, plus a wrestling area and weight room in addition to the runway, box, crossbar and pit used for pole vaulting itself. More than 500 poles are also available for rent. The former school stage is now a little kids’ play area. “It’s very family friendly,” Doc said.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Pole vaulting camps are held in the summer. Those camps typically sell out well in advance.&nbsp;

The Tailwind Pole Vault Club has had tremendous success through the years. “Multiple Olympic vaulters, All-Americans and world-record holders have coached and jumped here,” Doc said. “We’ve had more than 200 state champions and multiple national champions from our club.”&nbsp;

But this isn’t only about pole vaulting. It is about positive life skills. “Pole vaulting is an excuse for me to interact with people,” Doc said with a smile. “Kids need a positive experience. My greatest reward is to see them learn and grow in self-confidence and succeed in life.”&nbsp;

One camp slogan is “Don’t get high, Jump high.”&nbsp;

“I tell kids that anyone can go out and drink or do drugs, but it takes a special person to commit to pole vaulting,” he said. “You can stand out above the crowd. Not many guys can jump 14 feet. Not many girls can jump 10 feet, but we can teach you to pole vault,” Doc said. “It takes hard work and focus, but we can do it.”&nbsp;

“We also teach kids to work with others. We don’t allow cocky attitudes.&nbsp;&nbsp;Everyone is taught to help the younger kids. We focus on having fun, being safe, and jumping high.”&nbsp;

Many kids who trained at Tailwind Pole Vault Club have gotten college scholarships at some level. Vaulters have come from as far away as California and Florida.&nbsp;

That’s a remarkable record for a program at the rural community of Jamestown, population 286 people. Now, that’s rural.&nbsp;

Now That’s Rural: Mark Breault, Tailwind Pole Vault Club 

For the first carnival in the area this year, Moore's Greater Shows will return to Big Creek Crossing, 2918 Vine this weekend.

They plan to open Thursday and will be open every night through Sunday.

"We're excited to have them," said Branson Hoffman, Big Creek Crossing marketing director. "We called them early spring, and we love having them. This will be our third year having them here."

He said they would have been in Hays last year, but like most other events, the carnival did not operate during most of 2020 as COVID-19 intervened.

As life is returning to normal, Hoffman said the word of the upcoming carnival has spread, and there has been substantial interest from the community.

"We've been getting calls and messages for them," Hoffman said. "So I know people are getting excited."

While the carnival will be an opportunity for area families to enjoy something missing from the last year, he said events like these help operations at the shopping center as well.

"The events that I help coordinate and put on - and a lot of times host myself without going through a third party - is a huge part of what we try to do," Hoffman said. "Just the event side of things is a very important focus that we try to lean upon when planning year to year.

"We focus on retail and clothing and the fun atmosphere to come, but we can do more. So when we have these events it's just a big deal for us."

He said while the shopping center was able to host some of the planned events over the last year, they were subdued with the uncertainty brought on by the pandemic.

"It wasn't quite normal," he said. "You could feel that."

Moore's Greater Shows was also impacted significantly over the last year and is still feeling the effects.

"It's been crazy," said Ricky Moore Jr. "But we are glad to be back open."

He said he understood the precautionary measures needed to keep people safe and worked as much as possible to navigate the changing guidance put in place to stop the spread of COVID-19.

But the impact from the pandemic has continued into the year, Moore said. The Hays carnival will only be their sixth event of the year when typically they would have had around 18 events by this time.

"We are trying to get everything going and get back to normality," Moore said. "It's unfortunate we have all been shut down for so long, but we are just trying to get back open and move on."

The carnival is set to open Thursday and run from 6 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. For opening night, $25 armbands will be available.

They will be open Friday and Saturday from 6 p.m. to 11 p.m. and on Sunday from 6:00 p.m. to 10 p.m. with $30 armbands available each night.

 </figure>By JAMES BELL Hays PostFor the first carnival in the area this year, Moore's Greater Shows will return to Big Creek Crossing, 2918 Vine this weekend.They plan to open Thursday and will be open every night through Sunday."We're excited to have them," said Branson Hoffman, Big Creek Crossing marketing director. "We called them early spring, and we love having them. This will be our third year having them here."He said they would have been in Hays last year, but like most other events, the carnival did not operate during most of 2020 as COVID-19 intervened.As life is returning to normal, Hoffman said the word of the upcoming carnival has spread, and there has been substantial interest from the community."We've been getting calls and messages for them," Hoffman said. "So I know people are getting excited."While the carnival will be an opportunity for area families to enjoy something missing from the last year, he said events like these help operations at the shopping center as well."The events that I help coordinate and put on - and a lot of times host myself without going through a third party - is a huge part of what we try to do," Hoffman said. "Just the event side of things is a very important focus that we try to lean upon when planning year to year."We focus on retail and clothing and the fun atmosphere to come, but we can do more. So when we have these events it's just a big deal for us."He said while the shopping center was able to host some of the planned events over the last year, they were subdued with the uncertainty brought on by the pandemic."It wasn't quite normal," he said. "You could feel that."Moore's Greater Shows was also impacted significantly over the last year and is still feeling the effects."It's been crazy," said Ricky Moore Jr. "But we are glad to be back open."He said he understood the precautionary measures needed to keep people safe and worked as much as possible to navigate the changing guidance put in place to stop the spread of COVID-19.But the impact from the pandemic has continued into the year, Moore said. The Hays carnival will only be their sixth event of the year when typically they would have had around 18 events by this time."We are trying to get everything going and get back to normality," Moore said. "It's unfortunate we have all been shut down for so long, but we are just trying to get back open and move on."The carnival is set to open Thursday and run from 6 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. For opening night, $25 armbands will be available.They will be open Friday and Saturday from 6 p.m. to 11 p.m. and on Sunday from 6:00 p.m. to 10 p.m. with $30 armbands available each night.<a href="https://www.facebook.com/BigCreekCrossing">For more information visit the Big Creek Crossing facebook page</a>.

First carnival of the season opens Thursday at Big Creek Crossing

Thomas More Prep-Marian Jr./Sr. High School recently announced the following faculty additions for the 2021-22 academic year.

Mrs. Rhoda Urban will serve TMP-Marian as Junior High Social Studies instructor. Urban retired in 2018 after 25 years as a Kansas public school teacher serving the last 24 at USD 432 in Victoria. Prior to her years in public schools, Mrs. Urban served as Preschool Director at St.Thomas More Parish, Salt Lake City, Utah and a classroom facilitator at Sacred Heart School, Larned, KS. She has a degree from Fort Hays State University and is a teacher consultant for the National Writing Project.&nbsp; Mrs. Urban loves inspiring and empowering students to reach new heights in their education. Throughout her career, Urban has taught numerous subjects in a variety of age levels which has allowed her to have a diverse background. Most recently she has worked with Holy Family Elementary School as a substitute teacher and is eager to join the TMP-M staff and students next year.

"Mrs. Urban will bring a breadth of experience to our junior high. Her skills and interest in good writing and project-based learning will help our students grow in the areas of social studies, their faith, and leadership," said Principal Chad Meitner.

Mrs. Urban fills the vacancy left by Mrs. Kate Dwyer who has taken a teaching position in Shawnee Mission, KS.

Joining the Hays Catholic Schools Fine Arts Department is Mrs. Carol Whisman. Whisman will take on the position of band instructor for TMP-Marian and Holy Family Elementary. Most recently Whisman has held the position of music instructor at Hays Middle School.

Mrs. Whisman continues on for Mrs. Wendy Stein who announced her retirement this year after stepping in for Mrs. Kathy Amrein upon her retirement in 2020.

“I look forward to being a part of the TMP Marian music tradition. Working with the students and Mrs. Rome to continue developing excellence in music will be very enjoyable,” said Whisman.&nbsp;

"Mrs. Whisman brings a wealth of experience in Band and music programs. We are excited to have her continue to build on the proud tradition of excellence in TMP-Marian Fine Arts," said Principal, Chad Meitner.

TMP-M announces staff additions for 2021-22 school year

Plentiful spring rains have moved the entire state out of drought conditions.&nbsp;

According to the most recent U.S. Drought Monitor report released June 3, there are just two areas in Kansas rated as abnormally dry — in the far northeast corner and a southeast portion of the state.&nbsp;

According to the&nbsp;National Drought Mitigation Center at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, 96.93 percent of Kansas land is drought-free as of June 1. At the same time last year, 49.84 percent of the state was drought-free.

In Hays, official weather records at the K-State Agricultural Center show 15.79 inches of moisture for the year as of June 1.&nbsp;

Hays is more than four inches ahead of rainfall for the year.&nbsp;

The 152-year cumulative average by the end of June is 11.35 inches. The average rainfall during June is 3.43 inches.

No current drought in Ellis County, entire state 

BY GREG DOERING Kansas Farm Bureau The deadline to file for local elections passed recently, and it’s worth thanking every school board hopeful and municipal candidate for their willingness to run. The past 15 months has proven what I’ve long believed — local elections have the biggest impact on the day-to-day lives of Kansans. Mask ordinances, business restrictions, how and where children attended school this past year ultimately weren’t dictated by officials in Washington and Topeka. Instead, local school boards made the call on what classrooms looked like. Your city commission or council also had the option to impose their own measures to fight the pandemic. Some did while others didn’t. I won’t say the system worked perfectly because no human endeavor ever will, but it generally worked as designed. The people making those decisions not only had to live with the effects of their decisions, but they also answered to their neighbors, friends and family members. That offers a pretty good dose of accountability. This fall, incumbents and newcomers alike will answer to voters in either the August primary or November’s general. July 13 is the deadline to register to vote for the Aug. 3 primary, and Oct. 12 is the last day to register for the election on Nov. 2. All of the contests are nonpartisan, but the lack of party affiliation doesn’t mean there’s a lack of politics. But even the fiercest debates seem cordial when compared to partisan counterparts. Bond issues to build new schools or sales tax initiatives for municipal projects are likely to be on the ballot as well. With more than 300 school districts and 600-plus cities in Kansas, there’s always demand for good candidates. The job description is essentially full-time work with little to no pay, little thanks and a good number of people with opinions on the job you are doing, even if those thoughts are belatedly relayed. While I’ve never served in elected office, I’ve been in the room for hundreds of school board meetings or city council sessions over the years. Occasionally members of the public crowd into those meetings if there’s a big issue, but more often there’s little engagement outside of staff. For a variety of reasons, there’s an inverse relationship between the power local officials have over the public’s everyday lives and the amount of time we as citizens spend sorting through the issues. This lack of civic engagement starts at the ballot box, where voters will turnout in fewer numbers than statewide or national elections. It’s the reason why the most important quality local leaders can have is the ability to tap into their social networks and get feedback. Meetings may be where votes are counted, but the decision making process has to begin by getting input from outside the room. I’m hopeful there won’t be another year as difficult as 2020 was, but even under the best of circumstances officials often have to make decisions based on incomplete information. I’m always amazed and appreciate there are people who volunteer to serve in these roles. &nbsp; Those who step forward to fill these positions, you’ll always have my respect. I wish you well in your campaign. Should you win, your prize is weeknight meetings going to midnight or later where decisions will be second guessed by neighbors, friends and even family members. But we all owe you a debt of gratitude for your willingness to share your time, talent and perspective to make your community, and by extension the rest of the state, a better place to live.

Steve “Greek” Antonopulos announced this week he will be retired after 45 seasons with the Denver Broncos.&nbsp;

Antonopulos was formerly the head trainer and a physical education teacher at Fort Hays State University in the 1970s.

Broncos trainer with FHSU ties set to retire after 45 seasons

MANHATTAN -&nbsp;&nbsp;The&nbsp;<a href="https://ksbstate.org/" target="_blank">American Legion Boys State of Kansas</a>&nbsp;has announced that the deadline to register for the 2021 session has been extended until Wednesday, June 30. Individuals can continue to register after that date, but only on a space-available basis. The 2021 ALBSK session will be held Sunday, August 1, through Saturday, August 7, at Kansas State University in Manhattan. The program, which was cancelled in 2020 due to the coronavirus pandemic, will be in its 83rd year. This year’s session was originally scheduled to be held next week (June 6-12), but earlier this year, Kansas Boys State leadership made a decision to move from its traditional early June event to the first week of August to allow time for the coronavirus vaccine to be fully available to the general public. “We did not want to cancel the event a second year in a row,” said Tom Wierman, Kansas Boys State executive director. “After consulting with numerous individuals, we decided holding a virtual event was not feasible nor of interest to potential delegates after having spent most of the last 15 months going to school virtually. With the assistance and blessing of Kansas State University officials, it became clear that moving the date was in the best interest of the delegates, staff/volunteers and the University.” Traditionally, Kansas Boys State is for individuals who have completed their junior year of high school. With last year’s cancellation, the&nbsp;<a href="https://ksbstate.org/general/2021-registration/" target="_blank">ALBSK program announced in January</a>&nbsp;that it was expanding the pool of registrants for this year’s session to include those who have completed their senior year of high school (those who missed out on last year’s event due to the coronavirus pandemic), as well as individuals who have completed their sophomore year of high school. The American Legion Boys State of Kansas program provides a relevant, interactive, problem-solving experience in leadership and teamwork that develops self-identity, promotes mutual respect and instills civic responsibility. Boys State is a “learning by doing” political exercise that simulates elections, political parties and government at the state, county and local levels, providing opportunities to lead under pressure, showcasing character and working effectively within a team. It’s also an opportunity to gain pride and respect for government, and the price paid by members of the military to preserve democracy. Those wishing to attend the program should visit&nbsp;<a href="https://ksbstate.org/" target="_blank">ksbstate.org</a>&nbsp;to register. Boys State of Kansas extends deadline for 2021 session

BUNKER HILL –&nbsp;The <a href="http://wkcf.org/">Western Kansas Community Foundation</a> has awarded Smoky Hills PBS with a grant for $2,600. &nbsp;

This grant will provide books for preschoolers and Head Start students within several western Kansas counties including:&nbsp; Finney, Grant, Gray, Scott, Seward, Wichita, Greeley, Hamilton, Haskell, Kearny, Lane, Meade, Morton, and Stevens Counties.

Haley Gagnon, special events coordinator of Smoky Hills PBS said, “At Smoky Hills PBS we are dedicated to educating the youth within our viewing area and we want to thank the Western Kansas Community Foundation for partnering with us in this mission.”

The Smoky Hills PBS Book Distribution program provides books each year to Head Start and other early education programs across central and western Kansas through the funding of many foundation partners throughout Kansas.&nbsp; Encouraging a love of reading at a young age is an important aspect of educational development and that serves as the basis of why Smoky Hills PBS provides its book distribution program each year.

Smoky Hills PBS awarded grant for children's book distribution program

With the beginning of the summer term at Fort Hays State
University, life has returned to normal on campus.

And with the removal of COVID-19 preventive measures and the transition back, a massive expansion of in-state tuition to states across the region by the
university is making its way to the Kansas Board of Regents.

If accepted, incoming students from 14 states will have access to in-state tuition, typically a much cheaper rate than out-of-state rates.

“We are all in,” said Fort Hays State University President
Tisa Mason. “We have moved back to pre-pandemic policies and procedures, we are
not wearing masks, our doors are open again, the buildings are unlocked. And
this fall when our students come back, they are going to see football games and
they are going to see student activities and fantastic resident life programs
and Greek life and whatever student organization appeals to them. It will be
exciting to go to the back-to-school picnic, find their interest and start
loving Hays, America, and a Fort Hays education.”

Mason said FHSU policies had limited the number of cases
stemming from the university, giving them valuable insight into returning safely.

“We are feeling really good with how our community and
student and our faculty and staff rallied around, followed protocols when we
asked them too, and we have been able to expand and open up,” Mason said.

The end of COVID-19 protocols coincided with the beginning of
the summer term, but for most FHSU students, the return to normal will be seen
in the fall, with only select classes offered during the summer term.

But for those students planning to attend FHSU in
the fall, despite the financial concerns brought on by the pandemic, the
university is recommending no cost increases.

Students could even see a slight decrease in costs.

While tuition rates are ultimately up to the Regents, Mason
said they are recommending no increase.

“We have proposed for the second time no increase to tuition
and actually a slight decrease in fees thanks to our student government. They are going to save $.18 per credit hour,” she said. “This means that tuition at
Fort Hays will remain roughly half of the national average and more than $2,000
less than the average of our sister KBOR universities.

“Any way you look at it, we are the best value anywhere.”

And with another proposal made by the university to the Regents,
that value will extend far past the borders of Kansas.

“We are taking a bold move to define our region a little
differently,” Mason said. “We are taking our value in terms of affordability
and blowing it up. We are going to, if approved, offer in-state tuition to 13
states.”

She said the proposal will give more students than ever the
ability to access the low cost of FHSU compared to other area schools and
bring more people to Hays.

Under the proposal students from Arizona, Arkansas,
Colorado, Illinois, Iowa, Missouri, Nebraska, New Mexico, Oklahoma, South Dakota,
Texas, Utah and Wyoming would have access to in-state tuition rates.

The plan would begin in the fall of 2022 and applies to
students already on campus as well.

“It is possible that some of those students using our
regional tuition will save money by going out of state if they go to Fort Hays
State University,” Mason said.

Game-changing proposal to be made by FHSU as life on campus returns to normal

Kansas Common crude at CHS starts the week at $59.75 per barrel, the best price in McPherson since October 2018.&nbsp; That's up nearly two dollars from the first of the month and $21 higher than at the first of the year. By midday, Monday the Nymex benchmark futures contract was down 16 cents from Friday's settlement, to $69.46 per barrel. London Brent reached $72.17 a barrel in intraday trading Friday, the highest price for the international benchmark since 2019. Brent prices remained above $71 Monday. Kansas crude-oil production rose 15% in March from the month before, according to a government report. But state output remained more than 11% behind March of last year. The Energy Information Administration said Kansas production reached 2.3 million barrels in March. That's about 77,000 barrels per day, compared to 67,000 barrels a day the month before and 87,000 barrels per day a year earlier. EIA reports U.S. output in March reached 11.2 million barrels per day, up 14% on the month, but down 12 percent from March 2020. After a big drop in February, crude output in Texas jumped 26% in March to 4.4 million barrels per day. The government's weekly petroleum report shows production, inventories and imports all dropped last week. U.S. operators produced 10.88 million barrels per day during the week ending May 28. That's down 168,000 barrels per day from the week before and about 300,000 barrels per day less than the same week last year. EIA said inventories dropped more than half a million barrels. Stockpiles are about three percent below the five-year seasonal average. Imports were down more than half a million barrels per day last week at 5.6 million barrels per day. EIA said over the last four weeks, average imports are slightly lower than the same four weeks last year. The Rig Count in Kansas from Independent Oil &amp; Gas Service was down one rig in the eastern half of the state and unchanged out west. Drilling was underway on one lease in Ellis County Friday. Baker Hughes reports 456 active drilling rigs across the U.S., which is down one gas rig from last week. The count in Texas was down two while New Mexico was up two. There are 18 new drilling permits in Kansas this week, including 11 in Western Kansas, to bring the total so far this year to 369 new drilling permits. Independent Oil &amp; Gas Service reports 21 newly-completed wells across Kansas, 11 of them west of Wichita. That's 321 well completions so far this year. Weekly oil-by-rail totals posted a 27% increase over last year at this time. The Association of American Railroads reports 11,163 tanker cars moving petroleum products for the week ending May 29. That's up 363 tankers from the week before. AAR says total U.S. rail traffic in May was up 28% over May of 2020. Total combined U.S. traffic for the first 21 weeks of the year was up nearly 14% compared to last year. The auto club AAA says gasoline demand has jumped steadily since the end of April, dropping supply levels around the country.&nbsp; That means pump prices are likely to see fluctuation this month. The average price across the country was just over $3.04, or more than a dollar a gallon higher than a year ago. The average across Kansas was just under $2.83 per gallon.&nbsp; Filling up a 15-gallon tank locally will cost you about a dollar more than last week, a dollar less than last month, and about $17 more than a year ago at this time.&nbsp; The government says U.S. energy consumption last year dropped by a record seven percent from the year before. The Energy Information Administration sways energy use decreased for all fuels except renewable energy, which increased by two percent. Petroleum consumption last year dropped by 13%, and natural gas was down two percent. Authorities braced for protests in northern Minnesota in the final construction push to replace a crude oil pipeline. Environmental and tribal groups oppose Enbridge Energy’s ongoing effort to replace its aging Line 3, which carries Canadian crude from Alberta. It clips a corner of North Dakota on its way across northern Minnesota to Enbridge’s terminal in Superior, Wisconsin. The Canadian and Wisconsin replacement segments are already carrying oil. The Minnesota segment is about 60% complete.

News From the Oil Patch: Best Kan. crude prices since October 2018

Beginning Monday, Hess Services Inc. began constructing improvements at the intersection of 230th Avenue and 55th Street. &nbsp;The construction will take place in multiple phases. &nbsp;<a href="https://www.haysusa.com/ImageRepository/Document?documentId=3999" target="_blank">(See Location Map)</a>&nbsp;&nbsp;The anticipated construction impacts and traffic control operations are as follows:

•&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;The first phase will consist of grading and asphalt pavement widening along 55th Street and the East side of 230th Avenue. &nbsp;During this phase, 230th Avenue and 55th Street will remain open for two-way traffic with restricted lane widths and intermittent flagger operations to manage traffic. &nbsp;Phase I is expected to last four weeks.

•&nbsp; &nbsp; After Phase I is complete,&nbsp;Phase II consists of grading, storm sewer installation, curb and gutter construction, and concrete pavement construction of the intersection and 230th Avenue North of 55th Street. During this phase, 230th Avenue will be closed between 55th Street and 58th Street for the remainder of construction. &nbsp;

Southbound 230th Avenue traffic will be restricted at Feedlot Road to local traffic only, a signed detour is not anticipated to be posted. &nbsp;The intersection will be constructed half at a time and 230th Avenue will be restricted to one northbound lane which will provide access to Eastbound 55th Street only. Southbound 230th Avenue between I-70 and 55th Street will be closed during this portion of phase two. &nbsp;Westbound 55th Street will be restricted at 240th Avenue to local traffic only, a signed detour is not anticipated to be to posted.

55th Street construction gets underway east of 230th 

WICHITA— The Girl Scouts of Kansas Heartland board of directors has announced that Rolinda Sample has been named the new chief executive officer for the council. She officially assumes her CEO position on July 15.

Hays and northwest Kansas are part of the Girl Scouts of Kansas Heartland.&nbsp;

Sample most recently served as chief professional officer for Boys &amp; Girls Club of Cheyenne, Wyo. where she successfully led the organization through a $6 million capital campaign to build a 12-acre site with outdoor recreation facilities and a 21,000 square foot clubhouse. Additionally, she secured a multi-year Department of Education 21st Century Community Learning Center grant as well as various other statewide funding opportunities. Also, under Sample’s leadership, the organization received the Money Matters Innovation Award for implementation of a financial literacy program. “Rolinda brings a wealth of leadership experience as well as a passion and enthusiasm for working with youth and community service. The Board of Directors is thrilled to introduce a leader of Rolinda’s caliber into our community,” said Helen Wimsatt, board chair, Girl Scouts of Kansas Heartland. “Rolinda possesses the qualifications and experience to ensure that the council continues to strengthen our mission in all the communities we serve.” Prior to leading the youth organization, Sample spent much of her career working within her local chamber of commerce organizations including serving as vice president for the Greater Cheyenne Chamber of Commerce. She focused on creating a strong local economy, promoted the community, and represented the voice of business to government. She worked closely with volunteers and community organizations to help build membership and meet fundraising goals. “This is a very exciting time to join the Girl Scouts of Kansas Heartland team as the new CEO. The dedicated staff and volunteers have developed a wonderful foundation for building girls with courage, confidence and character. I look forward to using the foundation to expand youth and adult membership as well as community support for the girls throughout the council’s 80-county service area,” Sample said. “As I travel throughout the council, it will be fun meeting the girls and the people who make a difference in their lives. Current CEO Liz Workman will retire at the end of June after leading the organization for the past eight years.
